STATUE OF LIBERTY STAKES PREVIEW

Great Ladies Rice’s In Te Domine leads field of fillies looking for stakes win BY SEAN CLANCY Linda Rice set the bar high last summer when upsetting Todd Pletcher for leading trainer honors. It’s a tough act to follow. This season, Rice started slowly but has gathered momentum, winning seven races from her first 23 starts. She will try to collect her first stakes score of the season when she sends out favorite In Te Domine in the New York Stallion Statue of Liberty Stakes. Today’s feature attracted 10 fillies eligible for the New York Stallion Stakes, a restricted program for offspring of New York-based stallions. Run at 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf, the Statue of Liberty is the eighth of 10 on the card. “It started out a little slow, I had to scratch five or six horses in the first two or three days, then I was struggling to get some others in,” Rice said. “The whole meet started a little sluggish for us but the horses have been running well. It certainly hasn’t been bad, but it started out a little slow that’s all.”

Owned by Blackout Racing and Lawrence Zyra, In Te Domine exits an impressive state-bred allowance victory all the way back on July 4. Rice scheduled the long break by design. “After she won the a-other-than I decided to sit and wait for this race, it was too close to run her in between, frankly, she reacted poorly when I ran her back on short rest before so I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice,” she said. “She’s been training fine, she’s settled in well to Saratoga, we’ve schooled her quite a bit, she’s doing well.” In Te Domine made her career debut at Saratoga last summer. Late in the meet, with the title on the line, the daughter of Freud beat everybody but entrymate Gitchee Goomie in a two-turn turf maiden. She finished second in her next start and then Rice put her away until this spring when she broke her maiden as a heavy favorite. Rice wheeled her back in 18 days and the $11,000 weanling responded with her only off-the-board finish when fifth. She trounced seven foes See Statue of Liberty page 6

in her next start, going 7 furlongs at Belmont. She will try two turns for the first time since making her debut at Saratoga last summer. “I ran her first time out as a 2-year-old a mile and a sixteenth and she finished second, she ran well that day,” Rice said. “I don’t think distance is an issue, but she does lack two-turn experience, in certain ways she’s vulnerable because of that.” In Te Domine was part of a revamped approach developed by Rice when she began buying New York-bred weanlings. She bought the dark bay filly from the New York Breeders Sales Company in 2007.

“I always enjoy that when I buy horses, to watch them develop is a lot of fun, whether it’s her or Mother Russia or Canadian Ballet or any of them, it’s always fun,” Rice said. “She’s owned by some great people who live locally here in Saratoga, hopefully it’ll be fun for them.” Ramon Dominguez will reunite with In Te Domine, who was ridden by Alan Garcia in her most recent victory. Bruce Brown entered Repole Stable’s Healthy Debate, the only filly to have won more than two races in the field of 10. Brown and Repole have another option, the Lake Luzerne on Friday where Healthy Debate is listed as 7-2 on the morning line. A winner of her last four starts, Healthy Debate came See Statue of Liberty page 8

to Saratoga from Jeremiah Englehart’s Finger Lakes barn and would make her turf debut. “She came in four days ago, so I don’t know too much about her, we’re leaning toward the other stake, seven-eighths on the dirt for New Yorkbreds, she’ll probably be the favorite in there. I’m going to talk to Mr. Repole and take a look at both spots,” Brown said. “She’s a big, good-looking filly, I really like her, she had gotten really good up there, she broke her maiden for $12,500.” George Weaver is off to another impressive start at Saratoga and he plans on keeping the iron in the fire with Michael Michalisin’s Bretton Woods who broke her maiden Aug. 1. The daughter of Gold Fever rallied to win by a nose in her seventh career start. Javier Castellano has the return call. Asked if he was excited, nervous or confident, Weaver laughed. “I’m always excited, I’m not nervous and I’m not necessarily confident but we’re glad we’re in there. It’s a good opportunity for a filly like this, you could make a case that it might be even easier than an one-other-than, being restricted to 3-year-old fillies,” Weaver

said. “We won with her and her sister, he owns the mare, as soon as I realized she was eligible for it, I thought, ‘Let’s run her back and give it a shot.’ I’m not dreaming to think she’s one of the horses to beat but she fits well with them and if she runs the way she did the other day, she could be right there and get a piece of it.” The rest of the field could be considered in the same mindframe; looking to win or get a piece of the purse and an important line of black type. Tom Bush entered In Your Dreams, she’s 1-for-5 in her career and exits a sixth here July 25. Beth Miller-Saul ships Northern Berkshire from Finger Lakes where she’s won twice from six starts, but has never tried the grass. Catalina Lady has struggled against maidens and was beaten 16 lengths by Bretton Woods in the allowance. Simmy will try to win her first race on the turf for owner/trainer Rick Violette. Rodrigo Ubillo will introduce the turf to Lindsay’s Point for the first time. She’s won one race, her latest start sprinting on the dirt here in Saratoga. Loyal Shadow stretches out for the first time since April for trainer Gary Sciacca. She’s won two out of her last four starts. Jim Ryerson, who won the Cab Calloway (the Statue of Liberty’s male counterpart) Wednesday, drew the outside post with Raffie’s Rose, a two-time winner of nearly $100,000.

Like The Special? Simmy represents the Rick Violette barn in the Statue of Liberty.

Thursday, August 12. Post Time 1 p.m. Entries with program number, post position, jockey, trainer, and morning-line odds.

I was full of anticipation. I could not wait to get to the racetrack. I paced the paddock. My mouth was dry. I had a knot in my stomach. But I was in awe of my horse. My heart pounded. I thought the gates would never open. I thought the pace was too fast. I thought the jockey moved too soon. I thought we still had a chance. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I pumped my fists. I jumped for joy. I won! I hugged my family. I thought my dad would be proud. I congratulated my partners. I called my friends. I lost my voice. I stood in the winner’s circle. I celebrated. that night, i dreamed of doing it all over again…”

CAB CALLOWAY STAKES RECAP

Nice Payday

Lubash makes most of speed, wins N.Y. stallion stakes

BY JOE CLANCY

Owner Leonard Pivnick went all the way to the Kentucky Derby with Meadow Flight back in 1994, but enjoys a New York Stallion Stakes at Saratoga too. Running for Pivnick’s Aliyu Ben J Stable, Lubash sprinted clear in the stretch to take control of the $100,000 Cab Calloway and win by 1 1/4 lengths over Seattle Mission with Zealous Boy third. Lubash (Kent Desormeaux) won for the third time in his seven-race career and made his speed stand up for the 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf in 1:42.14. “As a breeder, I love a spot like this,” said Pivnick, who has two mares. “We’ve bred and owned some nice horses that have run here over the years, but you’re always happy to win at Saratoga.” The Calloway, for offspring of New York stallions, lured a mixed bag of eight 3-year-olds. Lubash was the only multiple winner in the field, which also included two maidens. The winner rolled out of the gate and used his speed to grab a clear advantage on the first turn. quarter went past in 24.56 seconds. Down the backside, Good To Be Me pressed the leader and was joined later by longshot Gasper C. as the half-mile split stopped at 47.83 seconds. Lubash never blinked, restaking his claim on the final turn and getting first run on favorite Seattle Mission, whose late bid came up short. Trainer Jim Ryerson wondered about his horse’s small stature when looking at Seattle Mission and some of the other opponents in the paddock, but liked his chances. “I know he can run fast and keep running,” said Ryerson. “He’s not a big horse, but he’s quick so he can scoot away from them – quick through the first turn, get a breather down the backside, run away from them again on the (second) turn and then be pretty tough to catch in the stretch.” Desormeaux expected some company up front, and knew the key would be his horse’s reaction to it. “When they’re well within themselves and doing it comfortably, you’ll find something left,” the jockey said. “He was so comfortable in that position and that’s the difference. He wasn’t stressed out about the situation, he wasn’t pulling, he was off the bridle, ears straight up, enjoying a canter or a gallop – we weren’t going that slow.” At the quarter pole, Desormeaux asked and Lubash responded – kicking clear in the final furlong with plenty left for any would-be closers. “He had a different speed when called upon,” Desormeaux said. “They were going to have to work to get to him. He was full of steam all the way to the wire from the quarter pole.” The son of Freud pocketed $60,000 to more than double his career bankroll. Unraced at 2, he made his debut at Aqueduct in February, then won a state-bred $35,000 maiden claimer in the mud. Two starts later, Lubash tried the turf and won a New York-bred allowance

What’s in a name? Cab Calloway winner Lubash is named for owner/breeder Leonard Pivnick’s childhood friend Arnold Lubasch (yes, with a c). “He was in high school and I was in grade school, and we would go to baseball games at Yankee Stadium and Ebbett’s Field and other things,” Pivnick said. “We were in the stands for one of Babe Ruth’s farewell outings. There were two – one when he was in a suit and one when he was in his uniform. We were there when he wore a suit.” Lubasch grew up to become a reporter for the New York Times, covering New York’s organized crime scene among other topics. Pivnick’s stable name honors his father’s Hebrew name Aliyu (or the longer Aliyuee outside of New York) and grandfather, who was called Joseph. going 7 furlongs at Belmont. Two decent performances in open $50,000 starter allowances – a fourth and a third – going Wednesday’s distance on the turf set up the Calloway run. “He had run so well going seveneighths covered up that we thought maybe he liked that so we tried it again in the next two,” said Ryerson. “Today we just decided to let him maintain his position. He can dictate the race when he runs like that.” Pivnick and Ryerson campaigned Lubash’s dam Nasty Cure, who won going two turns on the dirt. Freud adds some grass influence and the resulting offspring is a quick turf horse whose speed and stamina make him dangerous going two turns in the right company. “If I had my distance choice, I would have said a mile but I’ll take it,” said Ryerson. “It all worked out. It was a great spot for us. He’s better on the turf, he’s a 3-year-old, you can’t always find spots for them.”

WEDNESDAY RACING RECAP

Tranquil Manner charges to the front to win Wednesday’s eighth race.

ven after the morning scratch of contender Moon Town from Wednesday’s eighth race reduced the competition to just four horses, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin wasn’t sure what to expect from Tranquil Manner. Though pleased with the way the 4-year-old A.P. Indy colt had been training, McLaughlin felt Tranquil Manner might have been in a bit over his head. He had only crossed the wire first twice in 11 starts, but was credited with a victory after African Diamond was disqualified for a medication positive following a March 14 win at Belmont Park. “He’s really a two-other-than,” McLaughlin said. “He was awarded first-place money a few starts back, and I had to run him in a three-other-than.” It didn’t matter. Settling well back off a pedestrian pace from even-money favorite Birdrun, Tranquil Manner and jockey Alan Garcia came flying late to

reel in the frontrunner and draw clear by a length in the $57,000 allowance/ optional claimer. Birdrun was second with Atomic Rain third. “How did that happen?” McLaughlin asked Garcia after posing for a trophy presentation. “I don’t know,” Garcia said. “He crossed the wire first.” Owned and bred by Darley Stable, Tranquil Manner placed fifth in the Grade II Brooklyn Handicap at Belmont Park July 4 in his previous start, and had been training primarily at the private synthetic-surface Greentree Stable complex off Nelson Avenue behind Saratoga’s main track. “He had been training well, but it was a nice surprise,” McLaughlin said. “It didn’t look like it was that fast a pace, but everything went our way and we got the money, so we’re happy.” In addition to Birdrun, the field included stakes winner and graded stakesSee wednesday page 18

onds and two thirds for the meet before breaking through. “That was a big one,” he said. “Leo’s a good horse trainer, and he knows what he’s doing,” said the jockey. “I’ve been riding a few years, so hopefully I know what I’m doing by now. It was a good combination.”

placed Atomic Rain, who ran 16th in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, and Canadian-bred Eye Of The Leopard, winner of the Plate Trial and Queens Plate last year. Birdrun (Kent Desormeaux) got away with soft fractions of :24.52, :49.06 and 1:14.33, but Tranquil Manner, who trailed by as many as 9 1/2 lengths, swept three wide coming through the stretch and gradually wore down the leader. “He ran well, against some nice horses,” McLaughlin said. “We’ll try to do it again.” Now that Tranquil Manner has caught up to his conditions, McLaughlin will take another step forward for the next start. “Now, we have to go to a stakes race,” he said. “He liked the track, so we might look at something here. I don’t know. We’ll figure something out. We’re happy with this one right now. This was a nice surprise.” • The wire came just in time for Julie’s Ina Frenzy. Trained by Leo O’Brien for Sorin Stables, the 3-year-old Ommadon filly followed a solid debut effort with her first career victory in Wednesday’s fourth race, a 6 1/2-furlong maiden for New York-bred fillies and mares. Ridden by Mike Luzzi, Julie’s Ina Frenzy contested a torrid early pace before surging to a 2-length lead at the top

of the stretch. Bumped at the break, By MK got untracked late and made a run at the winner, but ran out of racetrack. “I felt her (coming), and she actually heard her, too,” Luzzi said. “But, I was scrubbing the dishes. She ran well. Her first race was pretty good, too. She actually blew a shoe in that race, so we thought she’d be a little tighter today, and she was. She broke sharp. I didn’t want to use her too much, because the track’s a little deep. She isn’t a very big horse, and I managed to save some horse for the end.”

It was the first win of the meet for jockey and trainer. A mainstay in New York for years, O’Brien, 70, was winless in six starts with two seconds and a third. “It’s fantastic to win here. I love to come back every year,” O’Brien said. “I ran her back a shade soon, but she’s a nice little filly. She ran all the way. He didn’t beat her up much, so that was good. I think she’ll be OK. I wish I had a few more like her. That would be nice.” Luzzi was 0-for-22 with three sec-

• As he continues to hustle for mounts in the deepest jockey colony in the country, David Cohen could carry a tape of Wednesday’s second race, a $42,000 first-level allowance for New York-breds, to promote his services. Cohen worked on Strategic Move for the length of the stretch, wearing down 4-5 favorite One Note Samba to win the head-bob by a nose in 1:10.13 for the 6 furlongs. Wise Stop finished third. Trainer Steve Klesaris watched the race from his base at Fair Hill, Md. and gave credit to his jockey. “He made a difference,” Klesaris said by cell phone following the race. “He’s a very good young rider. Very talented.” Originally from Torrance, Calif., Cohen, 25, was second to Ramon Dominguez in wins and purses at the Aqueduct inner track and spring meets, and was seventh with 33 victories at the Belmont Park meet which preceded Saratoga. Cohen entered Wednesday’s card with four wins, seven seconds and seven thirds from 54 mounts. “Everyone knows the best riders in the country are at Saratoga, and it can be difficult sometimes being his first time in New York,” Klesaris said. “But, he’s very, very talented, and the racing world is only just finding that out.” See wednesday page 18

Strategic Move (3, David Cohen) gets up in Wednesday’s second race.

Sent off at 6-1, Strategic Move, owned by Alan Kirshner and Julian Bowen-Rees, won for the second straight time and first for Klesaris, who claimed the bay from trainer Carlos Martin at Belmont Park in June. “The horse had been training very well, so I expected a good effort out of him,” Klesaris said. “I didn’t know if it would be good enough. The race came up very tough, but he was relentless. He just kept coming.” • Last time out, Flying Sappho did everything but win. The 7-year-old mare set a quick early pace and led into deep stretch before getting caught in the shadow of the wire and falling a neck short.

In Wednesday’s opener, a conditioned claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, she was on the lead again dueling with Miss Bette M in even faster splits of :22.38 and :45.51, but had plenty left to pull away for a 2 1/2-length win. It was her first in five tries this year, and second in 31 lifetime starts. “It wasn’t easy but she did good, thank God,” trainer Rudy Rodriguez said. “The last time she ran very good, but just got nailed on the wire by the same horses. Dave Harmon Thank God the one the final stride to win that beat me wasn’t in the race. She’s a nice filly. She always tries. She’s just been unlucky, but thank God everything went her way today.” Rodriguez had 221 winners from 3,900 mounts in an 18-year riding career. He hung up his tack in February to begin training, and has four wins, three seconds and two thirds in his first 16 starts at Saratoga, including Endless Circle in the $70,000 John Morrissey Aug. 5. “I’m very, very blessed,” he said. “I got my brother at home taking care of the horses, shipping back and forth. We’re doing the best we can with what we’ve got. I don’t expect anything. I’m working very hard with the horses I’ve got, and I’m putting in a lot of work with all the horses. I think the hard work is

paying off. I’m going to keep working hard, because that’s what I do.” • Wearing a sharp blue blazer, khakis and designer sunglasses, John Terranova was dressed for a winner’s circle photo. Instead, he stood off to the side with his wife and assistant, Tonya, watching the sizeable Sovereign Stable crowd stand and smile next to their winning horse. “There’s a lot of people squeezed in there,” Terranova said. “It’s a hot day. I didn’t want to start sweating.” Making just his second career start and first since September, College Grad came up the rail to wrest a short lead from Real Rooster, then fell back and re-rallied in the last sixteenth of a mile to win the 5 1/2-furlong maiden turf sprint by a nose in 1:03.34. Ex Pat finished third. “He kind of missed the break,” Terranova said. “He’s not as sharp as some of the others with only the one start under his belt, but (jockey) Channing (Hill) did a sweet job on him. He doesn’t panic when he gets into stuff like that. He just tries to work out a trip. It was just beautiful.” A 3-year-old gelded son of Langfuhr, College Grad was last of six in his career debut last Sept. 11 at Belmont Park. He had been working steadily for his return, including five breezes at Saratoga, four on the turf course. “He’s had his troubles,” Terranova said. “Sometimes they force you to wait. Nothing you can do, right? Better late than never.” • Jockey Robby Albarado was injured after being thrown by his mount, Hunt For Candie, following Wednes-

day’s opener, and is expected to miss the rest of the meet. A 3-year-old Northern Afleet filly, Hunt For Candie dumped Albarado midway around the clubhouse turn as the horses were galloping out following the 5 1/2-furlong sprint on the Mellon Turf Course. Albarado, 36, was taken to Albany Medical Center, where X-rays revealed fractures to his clavicle and left index finger. He was undergoing further tests and it was unclear whether he would be admitted. Albarado (four wins, four seconds and nine thirds at the meet) missed his final two mounts of the day.

Horse Fever

cupofcoffee by Sean Clancy

Mike Michalisin had to do it. Had to own horses. He grew up going to the track with his best friend, Joe DiDario, whose grandfather trained horses. They went to Monmouth Park, Garden State, Atlantic City and some other tracks that don’t exist any more. Michalisin loved it. He remembers putting on his first Vetrap and then watching through his binoculars as the horse beat one; all he cared about was that the bandage stayed in place. DiDario stayed in the game, working as a jock’s agent and in management before getting out and going to work for Morgan Stanley. Michalisin went to college, went to work but never forgot about his desire to own a racehorse. “Joe taught me most of what I think I know,” Michalisin said. “Racing was very influential and something I couldn’t shake.” Now, a resident of the Upper West Side of Manhattan and in the investment business, Michalisin has finally let his dream out of the bag. He bought his first horse, Day Trading at Keeneland November 2005. She was carrying a filly, he named her Lateday Edition. She won here Aug. 6. A year after giving birth to Lateday Edition, Day Trading gave birth to a filly by Gold Fever. Michalisin named her Bretton Woods. She won here Aug. 1. Two horses to race. Two wins. Five days apart. At Saratoga.

Today, Michalisin, 42, gets his first taste of a stakes at Saratoga when Bretton Woods takes her shot in the Statue of Liberty Stakes. Trained by George Weaver, the 3-year-old filly broke through the maiden barrier in her seventh career start and warrants support in the $100,000 stakes. She’s 6-1 on the Morning Line. “I’ve always wanted to own horses, I assumed my first foray would be to claim something somewhere but as I did more research, I realized I wanted to buy the mares and go the breeding route,” Michalisin said. “I’ve always loved it, always loved the animals, always wanted to do it, it’s always been a dream to win a race at Saratoga, let alone two in a week. Too fun. Too fun. I’m so lucky, so fortunate.” Michalisin considers it an honor to own horses. Considers it an honor to work with horsemen like Philippe Lasseur of Keane Stud who foaled Bretton Woods and Lateday Edition, Kate and Bernie Dalton who break and freshen Michalisin’s horses in Camden, S.C., George and Cindy Weaver who train Lateday Edition and Bretton Woods, Nicole Hammond of December Farm in Midway who manages Michalisin’s horses in Kentucky. “It’s great to be so close to these animals and see them literally as they were born. I have a picture in my wallet of Lateday Edition when she was three days old. I underestimated the circle of people you meet,” Michalisin said. “It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. If more people knew how great this is on so many levels, there would be a lot more like me doing this. I’m sitting here in Saratoga on a sunny Wednesday evening just thinking about a great race tomorrow, it’s really, really special.” Michalisin owns a handful of mares and their re-

spective offspring. He tries to sell the Kentucky-bred foals and keep the New York-bred foals. He has a business model and tries to stick by it. Michalisin talks like a veteran horseman, not a neophyte owner. He listened to Weaver when the trainer suggested sending both fillies to Camden for the winter. Nothing was wrong, they just needed some time to freshen up. Let them breathe clean air and get turned out. They came back healthy and happy. “I guess it just comes from really caring about the animals, a lot of people do, but the thought was to build a little program around that, doing what’s right for the horse and secondly making sure I do all the research to make the right decisions. Thirdly, being patient. The third one is definitely the hardest part,” Michalisin said. “They give us so much and they try so hard. When you breed, you see all the things that can go wrong, I lost a mare giving birth. At a minimum, we should return that energy and just be patient. It’s not easy. You have to stay in business.” Bretton Woods and Lateday Edition have repaid Michalisin with two wins at Saratoga. And the meet’s still young. “Bretton Woods went back to Camden and thrived,” he said. “They’ve done really well. Being patient and giving them time off and George made this point, we can afford to wheel her back in 11 days because she’s pretty fresh. Because of her schedule, it’s not ideal timing but it’s not going to be that tough on her.” And if she wins? “I’m not sure there’s enough bourbon in the county,” Michalisin said. “It would be off the charts.”
