For Ian Wilkes and Lothenbach Stable’s Bearpath, it’s been a long, strange trip. The race is still on his chart. Maiden going 6 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland, sixth, beaten 4 1/4 lengths. Ian Wilkes, jockey James Graham and advisor Drew Nardiello conferred in the paddock chute, confused by the performance. Graham said he finished with a ton of horse. Grand Couturier sat closer to the pace in the Man o’ War but failed to see it out, winding up seventh, beaten just 4 1/4 lengths. “I went through this last year, until they run well, you don’t know,” Ribaudo said. “He was doing great going into the Man o’ War, I thought he was ready for it. I had to change riders, there was no pace, Rajiv (Maragh) had him close to the pace getting banged around, he still only got beat 4 1/2 lengths but you leave there scratching your head, he’s doing good now, it’s tough to get that confidence, thinking you’re unbeatable.” Drysdale decided to ship Gustav Schickendanz’s Marlang from his Hollywood base after the 5-year-old son of Langfuhr led every step of the Sunset to win his fifth career race. Winner of the 2008 Saranac at Saratoga, Marlang should inherit the lead under John Velazquez. Jonathan Sheppard will send out Romp, owned by Sisters in Racing and Jeff Siskin, for the first time. The 8-year-old gelding, owned by Elliot Mavorah, upset the Turf Classic last year but hasn’t hit the board in his subsequent four starts including a 14th in the Japan Cup. Owned by Brous Stable and Wachtel Stable, Al Khali could add some pace depth after wiring four overmatched foes in a mile allowance at Belmont in his most recent start. Kent Desormeaux rides. Grassy enjoyed a confidence boost in his most recent start when crushing allowance rivals at Belmont Park. BY Joe Clancy Got 20 minutes at Saratoga? Spend them with a Hall of Fame trainer and two Grade I horses. Neil Drysdale, trainer of A.P. Indy, Fusaichi Pegasus, Aragorn, Labeeb, Tasso, Princess Rooney and other stars through the years, sent two horses to Saratoga this week. At least one, Marlang, will run in today’s Sword Dancer. The other, Marsh Side, may opt to pass in favor of the Arlington Million or the Sky Classic next week. Occupying stalls in trainer John Hertler’s Oklahoma barn, both horses looked superb Friday morning. Gustav Schickendanz’s Marlang strolled the walking ring after a light gallop and a bath. The robust 5-year-old won the 2008 Saranac at Saratoga for trainer Debbie England. Since then, he’s moved to Drysdale’s base at Hollywood Park after failing to break through in gradedstakes company in Canada. The son of Langfuhr finished fifth in his 2010 debut at a mile in late June, then led from the start to capture the 1 1/2-mile Sunset Handicap (Gr. III) July 18. Drysdale aimed for the Sword Dancer because of his horse’s tactical speed and his history with the Spa’s inner turf course. “He’ll be well-suited to the course because he’s already won here,” Drysdale said. “There hasn’t been much speed in the races in the East, that’s one of the reasons we sent him back. There’s another speed horse in there (Al Khali) but he’s unproven at the mile-and-a-half. Marlang is.” Bred in Canada by his owner, Marlang could be proven in just about anything based on his looks – big head, strong muscles along his withers, powerful hindquarters and a classic turf look, he turns heads most places he goes. He and Marsh Side shipped from California Wednesday and spent a night at Clare Court before finding a little more peace at Hertler’s barn.

“The atmosphere here is so different, and it’s much better for our horses,” said Drysdale, who normally stays with Hertler when sending horses to New York. “(Marlang) is quiet, he’s adaptable and that helps. You can then go to races like this with a bit more confidence because he’ll handle the ship and everything.” Marlang gets jockey John Velazquez, and is 6-1 on the morning line. His stablemate Marsh Side carries a long resume that includes 28 starts dating to 2006, six wins and more than $2.2 million in earnings. The 7-year-old Robert Evans homebred has competed in the United States, Canada, Dubai and Japan and has posted two Grade I wins – the 2009 Northern Dancer and the 2008 Canadian International at Woodbine. Some of the son of Gone West’s best races have come on courses labeled good or yielding, and Drysdale and Evans’ racing manager Patrick LawleyWakelin will watch the weather – and weigh other variables – before making a decision on where to run. He comes off a solid fourth in the 1 1/4-mile Arlington Handicap (Gr. III) July 17, his first start since March. “We have to make up our minds, but he’s a mile-and-a-half horse too and we have options with turf horses this time of year,” said Drysdale, who watched Marsh Side roll through a light gallop on the Oklahoma dirt track. “He was giving quite a good pull really. That’s good to see. He looks happy, very happy.” Inducted himself in 2000, Drysdale took part in the Hall of Fame ceremony later in the morning – taking a bow along with 19 others in the annual introduction of past inductees. “I’m not sure how long it’s been since I’ve been to Saratoga, but it’s been quite a long time,” Drysdale said. “It’s nice to be back.”

Nose Job Interactif lands Gr. II turf stakes in three-way photo BY SEAN CLANCY Todd Pletcher and Kiaran McLaughlin met in the paddock after the Grade II National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes. The trainers had just finished a nose and a head apart in the $150,000 stakes. Pletcher’s Interactif got the best of McLaughlin’s Krypton who finished third in a tough photo. “Who weighted that race?” McLaughlin joked about the allowance conditions of the turf stakes. “Hey, my horse hasn’t won in a year,” Pletcher said. Krypton and Interactif had met in their previous start, the Virginia Derby, when Interactif carried 123 pounds and Krypton carried 117. Interactif beat him by a length and a half that day. This time, Interactif carried 119 while

Krypton toted 122. That’s a nine-pound swing. This time, it was a nose and a head in Interactif’s favor. Javier Castellano placed Interactif in a comfortable spot, outside, stalking Krypton through a quarter in 24.03. Rajiv Maragh stayed wide with Krypton which opened a spot on the rail for French import Paris Vegas to blast through and take the lead as the field rounded the first turn. Paris Vegas pulled his way through a half in 48.58 seconds as Krypton waited in second and Interactif waited in third. Longshot Citrus Kid tracked in fourth with Nordic Truce and Grand Rapport concluding the compact group. Krypton pounced first, dispatching Paris Vegas as Castellano tried to corner Interactif. The big colt lost a little ground around the sharp bend but turned for home with a clear shot at Krypton while getting first run on the rapidly closing Grand Rapport and Nordic Truce. decision for Pletcher; stamping the With Anticipation as his target, he won by 4 1/4 lengths at 15-1. “I thought we found it here last year. We ran him in the Sanford, got involved in a speed duel. We came back and worked him on the turf and it was obvious that this horse really liked the grass. And I had a win ticket,” Pletcher said. “At the end of the day, you’d love for all of them to be champions on the dirt but what you’ve got to do is to hopefully find their niche.” Not content on a turf career, Pletcher tried the son of Broken Vow over synthetic tracks twice this spring, finishing third in the San Felipe and fourth in the Blue Grass. Pletcher tried one more time to have a dirt horse, taking a shot in the Belmont where Interactif wound up sixth, beaten 8 lengths. “You’re always tempted when you have a nice 3-year-old with a dirt pedigree that’s running well on the turf to make him a dirt horse again,” Pletcher said. “The reality is he’s just a little better on the grass. There are so few opportunities in the spring that sometimes you’ve got to experiment, we tried the synthetic, we tried the Belmont. But he’s back doing what he does best.” Pletcher believes that the Belmont loss came down to distance and not surface. The big colt was right there for a mile and a quarter of the classic. proved his grass record to 3-for-6. He’s never been off the board on the turf. “We’ve tried to do it somewhat intelligently,” Pletcher said of the forays off the turf. “When we stepped out in the Belmont, we were taking a shot at a time when he seemed like he was training the best he had ever trained, working real well on the dirt at Belmont and in a race that didn’t have the Derby win-

ner, didn’t have the Preakness winner, we felt like if we were going to do it, let’s try it here. Luckily he’s been able to take everything we’ve thrown at him.” Pletcher knows he didn’t give Interactif any free passes and also said he hasn’t ruled out another attempt on the dirt somewhere down the road. For now, he’s pointing for the Jamaica at Belmont Park in the fall.

n the unluckiest day, everything came together just right for Freud’s Notebook. The 3-year old daughter of Freud got back her favorite surface, reunited with her favorite jockey and found a hole to run through on the turn as as she took the $70,000 Lake Luzerne Stakes by three-quarters of a length Friday. The win solidified the idea that Freud’s Notebook has more of an affinity for the dirt than what her bloodlines would indicate. “It is all because of Freud,” trainer Bruce Brown said about trying the filly on the turf in her last start, where she finished eighth. “We have tried it twice and she has shown us that she really doesn’t like it. She is the only one (by Freud) that I have seen that doesn’t.” On the dirt, Freud’s Notebook is now 3-for-10 with five seconds and two thirds for Pont Street Stable. After coming up on the inside of favored leader Torrone early, Fernando Jara found a crease to the outside and guided Freud’s Notebook three wide on the turn. She took the lead in the stretch and inched away to win the 7-furlong stakes, for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies. It was the third time in the last five starts that Jara has ridden Freud’s Notebook. The last time they were together was a third in the Park Avenue May 2 at

Belmont. They won an allowance race at Aqueduct in February. Brown was happy to have the rider back. “She is quirky, so we thought it would be better to have someone on her that had been on her before,” he said. “When they weren’t running at Delaware today and we got Fernando to ride we thought we would take a shot.” Based at Delaware Park, Jara enjoyed his trip back to Saratoga, where he won the 2006 Whitney with Invasor. “This was a great way to earn a little bit of extra money on the day off,” said Jara, who has 21 wins at Delaware. “We get along together and she feels the track well, so that always makes her ready to give it a try.” Freud’s Notebook finished in 1:25.16 and paid $5.50, while Rogue’s Jewel was second ($10.60) with Tapaline ($4.90) third. • The typical gasp rose when Air Support and Grigio hit the wire at the end of the sixth race for maiden 2-yearolds. • When Humilarity put up early fractions of 21.36 and 44.60 seconds in the eighth for $35,000 maiden claimers, trainer Charlton Baker was afraid that Rajiv Maragh might be pushing Splendid Behavior, who was prompting that pace, too far. “We made a mistake of going too fast last time,” Baker said about the horse’s fifth against similar company on the turf here July 25. “We expected to be big in that one. I was confident.” Splendid Behavior shook off the early speed, and the previous loss, and rolled by 7 1/4 lengths this time. “Second time is the charm,” Baker said. “He is a pretty nice horse and he showed that.” The 3-year-old son of Wildcat Heir completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.70 and was the biggest price of the day at $34.20.

• A week ago, neither Sweet William nor the Little League All-Stars from Western Los Angles had ever won anything in New York State. After Friday’s second race, a $35,000 maiden claimer for 2-year-olds, they both had. Wesley Ward’s gelded son of Bring the Heat went to the outside and scored by 3 1/4 lengths, and met 14 members of the team that finished 17th of 103 in a tournament in Cooperstown during the week who presented the trophy afterwards. “It has been a beautiful trip and there is no place better to come after the kids played so well this week,” head coach Geoff Lands said. “Most of these kids haven’t been to New York so this is the perfect treat for them.” Sweet William was making his second start at Saratoga this year. His first try was a maiden special weight on the turf at 1 1/16 miles Aug. 4 where he finished ninth by more than 13 lengths. This time he found much more success.

“He ran fine and had a good path to follow,” said Eibar Coa, aboard for the horse’s last three trips. “He was definitely good enough for that one.” The all-stars thought so too. • Generously, there were a few that only referred to Matt’s A Giant as the “most experienced entrant” in Friday’s first race for $25,000 claimers. The 8-year-old son of Giant’s Causeway had 10 more starts than any other runner in the field and didn’t garner too much attention as the public sent him off at odds of better than 13-1 for owner Andrew Sulley and trainer Patricia Farro. However, Matt’s A Giant also had the most wins in the race and added another by finishing a length ahead of a four-horse blanket photo for second. Rajiv Maragh rode the winner, who paid $29.40 while beating the favorite Winthrop House. It was the seventh win in 66 starts for the horse; all of his victories have come on the turf.

The day my final race is run And, win or lose, the sinking sun Tells me it’s time to quit the track And gracefully hang up my tack, I’ll thank the Lord the life I’ve led Was always near a Thoroughbred. Hall of Fame chairman Ed Bowen read that verse from a poem by racing icon Paul Mellon to open the 2010 induction ceremony Friday at Fasig-Tipton in Saratoga. The words speak of a bond between human and horse, and go a long way toward explaining the connections the 2010 Hall of Fame acceptors have with the horses they rode, trained and owned. The Hall of Fame welcomed horses Azeri, Best Pal, Point Given and Harry Bassett; trainer Buster Millerick and jockeys Don Pierce and Randy Romero. The ceremony was part history lesson, part graduation day, part family reunion and once again thrilled an audience sprinkled with as many members of the public as insiders. Retired jockey Gary Stevens provided the keynote address, only the fourth Hall of Famer to do so after Chris McCarron, Wayne Lukas and John Nerud. Stevens kept it short, but focused on Hall of Fame characteristics – greatness, mentors, hard work, determination and more. The 2010 class had all of those.

Hall of Fame delivers again

Trainer “Buster” Millerick conditioned the great Native Diver, a Hall of Famer who won 37 races. His cousin Shawn Millerick accepted the plaque on behalf of the family and spoke of a man who cared deeply about his horses – complete with all of the usual traits of hard work, long hours and superstitions. “The phrase old-time horseman is a high compliment,” Bowen said when introducing Millerick, who died in 1986. Michael Paulson accepted the plaque for Azeri, a four-time Eclipse Award winner bred by his father Allen. Horse of the Year in 2002, Azeri won 11 consecutive races and endeared herself to fans across the country in much the same way Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra have done. Paulson empathized with the owners of those great distaffers. “It’s very nerve-wracking to campaign a horse like Azeri,” Paulson said. “We worried about her every time she went to the track.” Larry Mabee thought of his late parents, John and Betty, when accepting for gallant California-bred gelding Best Pal – saying they were “the only thing missing” from the ceremony. “To be in this group today and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is emoSee Induction page 27

The superstar in the plain brown coat became just the 14th Hall of Fame horse who never won a championship. Noted Kentucky breeder Libby Jones, who owns Aidrie Stud with her husband Brereton, accepted for 1870s racing star Harry Bassett and provided a dose of history. Jones’ great-grandfather A.J. Alexander bred the horse, who won 23 races and excelled at distances of 2 miles and more. The Alexander family’s Woodburn Farm survived the Civil War, in part by flying Britain’s Union Jack flag and stood the great Lexington (Harry

Bassett’s sire) at stud. A.J. Alexander’s brother R.A. Alexander most likely planned the mating, Jones said, but died before seeing Harry Bassett born. A.J. Alexander moved back to Woodburn, now owned by the Joneses, and raised a future Hall of Famer. “It’s a long story, and a happy story,” Libby Jones said. “It was a tumultuous time for the country and for racing. It was a long time ago, but it’s still a very emotional honor.” Bob Baffert accepted Point Given’s plaque and said the massive chestnut “might be the best horse I ever trained.” Considering Baffert’s training docket includes Silver Charm, Real Quiet, Silverbulletday and others, that’s high praise. Point Given won the Preakness, Belmont, Haskell and Travers in his 2001 Horse of the Year campaign, but lost the one race Baffert thought he would win. “I have never been as confident as I was when we led Point Given up for the Kentucky Derby,” Baffert said. “He was that good. If there’s one race to take back in my career, it’s the 2001 Kentucky Derby.”

Over the rest of the season, the Thoroughbred Corporation homebred proved to be everything Baffert said he was but still left too soon – retiring after the Travers with an injury. Retired jockey Don Pierce crossed over to Hall of Fame status, joining peers Willie Shoemaker, John Rotz, Johnny Longden and others. Pierce won more than 3,500 races, including 351 stakes while based in California for most of his 30-year career. “They called Don a money rider, but he did it all and did it all well,” said Rotz in his introduction speech. “He was confident in everything he did, but he was a super-confident rider. He never rode a longshot – he always thought he could win.” Pierce, inducted by the Historic Review Committee after missing out several times on the regular ballot, put on his Hall of Fame blazer with pride. “I didn’t imagine it would lead to something like this,” he said after discussing his roots as a teenage See Induction page 28

The Louisiana native won more than 4,200 races in a career that spanned 1973-99. In his speech, Romero thanked his family (especially wife Cricket), a long list of trainers, doctors, agents and friends. Carroll Angelle, from the office of Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, capped the day by delivering two official proclamations honoring native son Romero. “Hollywood has Tobey Maguire, but in Louisiana, we got Randy Romero,” Angelle said to a rousing ovation. Romero’s induction opened with a video presentation that included Per-

sonal Ensign’s hard-charging win in the 1988 Breeders’ Cup Distaff. “It all comes back to you when you’re up there – dreams come true,” Romero said after the ceremony. “I was very, very blessed that after all the accidents I had to come back and be as good as I was. It took a lot of hard work, but it was well worth it. I rode so many champions – it was incredible to think of them again.” And Personal Ensign? “The last jump, I thought I got it. I didn’t think I was going to get there, but the farther I was going the more I thought I had a chance. She just kept running.” Like the Thoroughbreds people write poems about. Just like old times. An apprentice thanked a trainer for the opportunity. An exercise rider cleaned tack. An agent dropped off the new condition book. Bob Ribaudo talked about the Sword Dancer. Grand Couturier stood in ice. It’s been five years; same trainer, same horse, same race, same ice tub. “It’s hard to believe it’s been five years,” Ribaudo said Friday morning. “There was never a great (stallion) market for mile and a half grass horses, we had a few inquiries from Australia, New Zealand. Nothing developed, if things were better he probably wouldn’t be here. As long as he can maintain his attitude, we’ll keep going with him. It’s really like having a gelding. To have him competing at this level, in a Grade I, for five years, that’s pretty good.” Think about that – five years of playing at the sport’s highest level. The first time was 2006. Purchased in France by Marc Keller, Grand Couturier landed in Saratoga on Tuesday before the Sword Dancer. Ribaudo had a couple of stalls at the end of Jimmy Toner’s barn. Richard Migliore (now retired) rode Grand Couturier; he was rank, they finished third behind Go Deputy and Silver Whistle. No Lasix. Not bad for a 3-year-old, fresh off the plane. “We didn’t know anything about him, we bought him two starts back in France, he came out of a great

race for 3-year-olds, got beat to Rail Link and Red Rocks. Unbeknownst at the time, but one went on and won the Arc, the other won the Breeders’ Cup, it was pretty good company,” Ribaudo said. “He was rank training in the morning and rank, too close, in the race. After the race, he was pretty good, still highstrung, we ran him in Canada, he ran a dull fourth in the Sky Classic, then we backed off him and brought him back the next year.” In 2007, Ribaudo prepped the bay son of Grand Lodge in the Fort Marcy where he finished third and the Bob Harding at Monmouth where he finished seventh as the favorite. Ribaudo hired Calvin Borel for the Sword Dancer, they were dismissed at 15-1 and the duo shot through on the rail to upset future champion English Channel. “As a 4-year-old, he started to show signs that he was going to be all right,” Ribaudo said. “When you beat a horse like English Channel, that was unbelievable.” A year later, Ribaudo followed the same blueprint as the year before, prepping his stable star twice before attacking the Sword Dancer. Alan Garcia met him in the paddock and engineered a wild stretch kick where he nearly went down after being bumped at the eighth pole. He recovered to win by 2 lengths over Better Talk Now and Interpatation. “We had some issues getting him in the right spot, but that was probably his best year,” Ribaudo said. “When he exploded and won the Sword Dancer, he almost went to his knees at the eighth pole.” Grand Couturier won the Turf Classic by 10 lengths in his next start and then finished the year with a disappointing run in the Breeders’ Cup. Ribaudo regrouped, freshened Grand Couturier over the winter and set out for his fourth attempt at the Sword Dancer.

Making his third start of the year, and going off the favorite, he hit some traffic and wound up fifth behind Telling, whom he’ll face again this year. “Last year, there was a little pressure, everybody was making a big thing about three in a row,” Ribaudo said. “I thought the Sword Dancer was at his mercy. It didn’t look bad on paper but it wasn’t a good race for him, I was feeling like, ‘that’s it.’ Then he came back and ran his race in the Bowling Green.” Grand Couturier went off the favorite and won the Grade II stakes in September and then ran hard to finish third behind Interpatation in the Turf Classic and second to Expansion in the Red Smith. Freshened for the winter like always, he returned in the Fort Marcy, then tried the Manhattan and then tried the Man o’ War. Ribaudo is hoping the overachieving, hard-to-gallop veteran comes back to his best yet again. “He’s doing good now, I’d be disappointed if he didn’t run well, I expect him to run well, if we get the trip and we get a little pace, he could win. If not, second or third would be fine,” Ribaudo said. “Now, I want to make sure he leaves when it’s over as good as he came in, God forbid something happened to a horse like him. We would never do anything to jeopardize him, the game is jeopardizing enough, when it is over, hopefully we can find him a good home.” A little guy in a big guy era, Ribaudo is grateful for a horse who has brought him to the sport’s highest level – and kept him there. “He’s been everything. He put me on the map,” said Ribaudo, who trains 11 horses at Saratoga. “He’s become a professional, with all his ailments, with his feet and his ankles, it’s been a battle. The things he’s accomplished is a credit to him because he has issues. He’s accomplished more with less.”
