“Editorial excellence is not a goal to be sought and one day acquired and then retired to the trophy case. It is instead an ambition which must be pursued each day, never ending, never totally achieved. That striving, that ambition is an essential part of our newspapers, a cornerstone of what we have been, what we are, and what we will be.” – Lee Hills, Pulitzer Prize winner, Knight Ridder chief executive, in 1974

SWORD DANCER STAKES RECAP

Still Talking

Telling does it again in Grade I turf stakes BY SEAN CLANCY Steve Hobby pulled off his tie halfway between the winner’s circle and the Trustees’ Room Saturday. His work was finished. Based at Delaware Park, the trainer had just successfully invaded Saratoga with Alex and JoAnn Lieblong’s Telling. Again. The 6-year-old son of A.P. Indy won his second consecutive Sword Dancer Invitational, this time running down Al Khali and staving off Bearpath to win the Grade I turf stakes under Garrett Gomez. Telling hadn’t won a race for 364 days, since last year’s Sword Dancer. Hobby never lost faith. “I could excuse everything that’s happened all year long but with these kind of horses, you don’t get too many opportunities and it felt like the year was slipping away from us, here we are in August and we

haven’t won a race. But now it’s all forgotten,” Hobby said. “I gallop him myself, my wife’s his groom and I actually thought he was a better horse this year than he was last year. He’s a racehorse, on gameday, he shows up even if he’s not perfect.” He might not be perfect in the morning, but he was perfect on Saturday afternoon in Saratoga. California shipper Marlang broke sharply and secured the lead from his inside stall as longshot Interpatation picked a slot in second. Favorite Expansion and Al Khali came next. Garrett Gomez braced against Telling before getting him to switch off in fifth, by himself and comfortable after a half in 48.27 seconds. Turning down the backside, Marlang continued his head-low, knee-high jaunt on the lead as Kent

Dave Harmon

Desormeaux allowed Al Khali to range up on the outside of Interpatation. Expansion tracked that pair and Telling held the best seat in the house. The ninehorse field had split into a 4-1-4 formation with Telling playing the key role, well off the leading group of Marlang, Interpatation, Al Khali and Expansion and more importantly well in front of the second group of Bearpath, Grassy, Romp and Grand Couturier. Now, it was up to Gomez to decide how close to stay to the leaders while saving enough for the closers. After three-quarters in 1:13.25, the critical move was made as Gomez stayed in touch with the leadSee sword dancer page 6

ing four as the following four allowed a yawning gap of 5 or 6 lengths to develop. After a mile in 1:36.62, Al Khali turned up the pressure on Marlang while Interpatation hung tough on the rail. Expansion tracked 2 lengths back and Telling began to wind himself into gear. Midway on the turn, all five were under a drive as Telling had 5 lengths to make up. Bearpath made up ground rapidly to join Telling as the field cornered around the portable rail, set well off the hedge. Gomez had one option, maneuvering outside Marlang and inside Interpatation as Bearpath swung five wide. Al Khali took the field to the eighth pole but the vanguard was closing with every stride. Telling ducked inside Al Khali while Bearpath stuck to his overland route. For a moment, there were three across the track and then Telling cut the chord, drawing off to win by a 1 1/2 lengths over Bearpath with Al Khali third and a tough Interpatation fourth. Favorite Expansion wound up fifth. Telling finished the 12 furlongs in 2:25.29. “You’ve got to have a horse that will settle in and get into a good rhythm and come home nice and that’s what he does,” Gomez said. “He gets into a high-cruising mode and he keeps rolling home. That’s what makes him good at a mile-and-a-half and that’s what makes him good here.” For owner Alex Lieblong, the second time was even sweeter.

6

“It’s harder the second time, it’s easier coming in here when they don’t know who the hell you are,” Lieblong said, comparing a 33-1 victory last year to a 10-1 win this year. “Hobby has done a fabulous job with him. I was more confident this time, he takes a while to come around but he comes around at the right time.” Telling hadn’t won a race since upsetting the Sword Dancer last summer, losing five in a row, including the Turf Classic and the Breeders’ Cup Turf last fall. He bled in the latter, forcing Hobby to turn him out for the winter. He made his first start in a Keeneland allowance, running evenly to be fourth in a field of six. He caught soft turf in his next start, a fifth in the Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs. Next, Hobby tried him in the United Nations at Monmouth, he finished sixth, beaten just 3 1/4 lengths. The defeats smudged his form but, remember, he had lost 10 in a row before taking his first Sword Dancer. “He’s a hard horse to get fit. Now, he’s finally really fit. Nice training job, run a Grade I horse fit,” Hobby said. “He won’t work. He gallops really strong and you’d think he would really work, but when you turn him loose at the pole, he’ll run about 50 yards and then he’ll slow down. Even with company, he doesn’t care. He’s just not a work horse, that’s the way he is, I actually think it’s because it’s on the dirt and he really doesn’t want to run on the dirt. If he’s coming off a layoff, I’m going to have to press on him to get him fit, I probably trained him lighter than I should have.” See sword dancer page 8

Fully fit now, Telling earned his sixth victory from 23 starts and increased his earnings to $881,049. Bred and sold by Darley after one start, Telling won four of his first five starts for the Lieblongs and Hobby, including three on the dirt. Once switched to the turf, he began holding his own with graded stakes horses and now is a dual Grade I stakes winner. A former jockey, Hobby gallops Telling every day while Hobby’s wife Mitzie rubs him. After the Sword Dancer, Hobby’s friend Ralph Nicks hosed down the winner before Mitzie walked him back to the test barn. Hobby (with his tie soon to be in his pocket) grimaced when he talked about what he’s like to gallop. “He’s tough. He’s cool, but he’s tough. This last month, he’s calmed down. He’ll stand but as soon as I hit the rein to go either way, he’s on it. Lately, he’ll walk for an eighth of a mile and then he’ll go off and go. He starts off slow and then he gets to be a bear,” Hobby said. “He’s the strongest horse I’ve ridden. He could do whatever he wants to do with me. I can talk him out of it but he’s strong.” Hobby took over the training of Telling in the summer of 2007. With just one race in his career, a third sprinting over the synthetic surface at Arlington Park, Telling was a work in progress. Hobby wasn’t sure he could get the horse to the races. Telling didn’t have any chips, strains, bows or blemishes, but he had Hobby worried. “I’ve never had a horse in my life with a pedigree like this. There’s a difference. When I got him, he was really sore, he trained sore, I didn’t know if we were going to run him,” Hobby said. “Finally one day, I told my wife, ‘I gotta see if he’s worth messing with,’ I put him on the fence and he went sound, immediately. As soon as I went to work him, he went sound, I was like, ‘Whoa, that’s where that breeding kicks in.’ Immediately. I said, ‘OK, let’s work with him.’ ”

8

Telling’s happy crew from Arkansas celebrated in the winner’s circle after the Sword Dancer.

Telling worked with Hobby, going from winning a dirt maiden at Oaklawn Park in February 2008, to becoming a dual winner of Saratoga’s most historic turf stakes by August 2010. “They thought he needed the synthetic track, he hates it. That was the whole thing,” Hobby said. “He’s the only Grade I winner I’ve ever had. I had an old sprinter who won over a million and a few other graded horses, but this horse is different.” Lieblong walked out of the Trustees’ Room and laughed at the irony of winning back to back runnings

of the Sword Dancer with a horse he purchased privately, cheaply. “They always ask me which is the best sale to buy a good horse. That’s like asking which store to go get your lottery ticket. Who knows?” the owner said. “We bought him and gave him some time, he kept developing, developing. “Getting Hobby out of Chicago was a little tough last year. To come from Chicago to here for the Sword Dancer is quite a leap of faith. I had more confidence this year.”

Golden Rule Homebred juvenile sparkles in second start for Ryan, Fein

hen the year is out, trainer Derek Ryan will lose hard-hitting Musket Man to the breeding shed. Owner Eric Fein has spent plenty looking for a replacement, but he may have already taken care of it on his own. Private Rules, a juvenile son of Grade I winner Peace Rules, broke his maiden in impressive fashion, sitting off a wicked pace before sprinting clear by 1 1/4 lengths in Saturday’s second race, a $40,000 maiden for New Yorkbreds. The winner covered 6 furlongs in 1:12.49. It was the second career start for Private Rules, who ran in the Saratoga mud July 24, lugging in early and fading to sixth of eight at 5 1/2 furlongs, 19 lengths behind the winner. “He ran into a sloppy track and nothing really went his way that day,” Ryan said. “We expected a big effort from him today.”

Ryan got an indication of the chestnut colt’s ability when he worked Private Rules in company with Musket Man Aug. 2, Musket Man’s final tuneup for the Grade I Whitney, where he ran third. Jockey Rajiv Maragh, who replaced Eibar Coa aboard Private Rules Saturday, was up for the work, going 5 furlongs in a sparkling 59 4/5 seconds, a time that trailed only his multiple graded stakes-placed stablemate. “He had been working really good,” Ryan said. “Everyone knows he worked with Musket Man last time, and there’s not too many horses that can hang with him. I had run out of ammunition, and he was the only one I had left. I needed a good work. I expected him to win today, and I would have been very disappointed if he didn’t. We all had a good bet on him.” Private Rules returned $19.60 as the nearly 9-1 fourth choice. Cooks ForSee saturday page 11

est came on late for second over Exley, who dueled through fractions of :21.88, :45.58 and :58.74. “He really wants to go longer than 6 furlongs,” Ryan said. “It’s a little too short for him, but we were lucky enough that they went a pretty good lick up front.” Ryan believes Private Rules’ potential is limitless. “I really think he’s got a big future,” he said. “He’s just a classy, classy horse. He’s a homebred, which is very good. He might be (Fein’s) best 2-year-old, and he bought some other ones with a lot of money. I keep telling him, this may be his best one.” • Bulldogger was an impressive maiden winner at Saratoga last summer, then wasn’t seen again until March. Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is hoping for a much quicker turnaround this time. Owned by Hal and Patti Earnhardt, even-money favorite Bulldogger led from gate to wire to win Saturday’s third race, a $52,000 entry-level allowance at 6 furlongs. Bulldogger cruised to the wire 4 3/4 lengths in front of longshot runner-up China with Footcandles third. Bulldogger ran the distance in 1:09.47, three seconds faster than juvenile maidens did one race earlier, and a second quicker than his winning debut time here last year. Bred in Kentucky by White Fox Farm, Bulldogger set the pace before tiring to third in his lone 2010 start, an entrylevel allowance on the Cushion Track at Santa Anita March 3.

“He was so impressive when he broke his maiden here, and then his shins were bugging him a little bit,” Baffert said. “So I sent him back and turned him out, and brought him back this winter. I ran him two turns and he got really tired, and came back with a hind-end issue, a synthetic issue. I stopped on him and gave him some more time, and right when I got him ready, Hal Earnhardt said, ‘Please put my horse on a plane for Saratoga.’ He loves Saratoga, so here he is. A horse like this, a fast horse like this, he needs to be here.” Baffert plans to nominate Bulldogger, a 3-year-old Dixie Union colt, to the Grade I $250,000 King’s Bishop at 7 furlongs on the undercard of the $1 million Travers on Aug. 28. He won the race with Forestry in 1999. “It’s possible,” Baffert said. “He actually galloped out pretty strong. The track is pretty deep; he made a slow track look pretty fast. We’ll just play it by ear and see how it is. He’ll let us know. It’s a tough race. It’s never an easy spot.” • Unlucky in five races this year, trying three different distances at tracks in three states, Carson Hall finally found the right combination. Making his second straight start at 1 mile and his first at Saratoga, the 5-yearold Carson City gelding picked up his first victory of 2010 in Saturday’s first (an optional claimer on the inner turf). “He ran well. He was in the right spot,” trainer Barclay Tagg said. “He’s a very honest horse, and we were certainly happy with his performance. Ramon (Dominguez) rode him to perfection, as usual. Everything went very smooth.” Carson Hall was 0-for-5 this year, losing by less than 3 lengths four times. He was sixth, beaten only 2 lengths, in the Grade III Appleton March 20 at Gulfstream Park for owners Joyce Young and Gerald McManis. “He’s as honest as the day is long,” Tagg said. “He just needed a touch easier race, and this one came up. We took advantage of it. You wish they all go as smoothly.” Trainer Steve Asmussen claimed the winner for Michael Dubb at $50,000. • Trainer Carl Domino changed surfaces, distances and company for No Rhyme Or Reason heading into Saturday’s fifth race, but not her rider. It was a good move. Patiently waiting for room, Dominguez split horses in mid-stretch and then sprinted clear of the field in the $10,000 claimer, going 7 furlongs in 1:24.80. “He was the right guy,” Domino said. “Down the whole backside, she was locked down in there. I kept my fingers crossed, but he prevailed, which is good.” Owned by Jump Sucker Stable, No Rhyme Or Reason broke from the rail in winning for the first time in three lifetime starts at Saratoga. The 4-year-old Full Mandate filly also benefited from leader Bobbi O.’s wide turn at the top of the stretch. “Luckily I had the pan shot, so I couldn’t really see. If I had been watching the head-on, it might have been a little different,” Domino said. “It looked kind of tight, but he was waiting and he had a lot of horse. He did the right thing, and everything worked out. The

other horse going a little wide probably left me a little room, as well.” No Rhyme Or Reason had made her last three starts and six of the last eight on grass.

She ran twice on the Saratoga dirt last summer, finishing fourth at 6 furlongs, and third at 1 1/8 miles in a race originally scheduled for the turf. “I wanted to get back at the distance and we dropped her down, and she did break her maiden on the dirt,” Domino said. “We figured this race would come up easier for her. I guess we did the right thing.”

Owner/trainer Joe Imperio claimed the winner for $10,000 in a race with four claims. All wagers on Worth A Shot were refunded after a stewards’ review determined that the assistant starter still had his hand entangled in the 7-year-old mare’s bridle when the gate doors opened, causing her to miss the break.

Bulldogger repeats his 2009 score over the Saratoga track, and could head to the Grade I King’s Bishop.

• No, Todd Pletcher doesn’t win all the 2-year-old races at Saratoga. It only seems like it. Pletcher’s closest competitor in the trainer standings, Mechanicville native Chad Brown, got a little closer when debut filly More Than Real captured Saturday’s sixth, a 1 1/16-mile Mellon turf test for maidens. The chestnut daughter of More Than Ready, owned by TYB Stable, gave Brown his 12th victory of the meet. Bred in Kentucky, she came to Brown in late May from Vinery, Ltd. in Summerfield, Fla., where Ian Brennan is the farm trainer. “She’s been training great, and I have to give a lot of credit to Ian Brennan,” Brown said. “He sent me a handful of horses from the Vinery that had been training there. They are so well broke, it was a piece of cake training them. All the foundation work was done. We just kind of stayed out of her way and got her fit. This filly has not missed a day of training. She’s done everything we’ve asked her to do.” Ridden by Garrett Gomez, More Than Real had been in Saratoga since joining Brown’s stable, and showed a string of 10 works for her unveiling. “She’s still a little green as far as out there on the racecourse, I can see,” Brown said, “and Garrett said she still needs to learn a couple things, but she’s a nice filly.” Of Brown’s first dozen winners, four have come with 2-year-olds: fillies Yawkey Way (July 25) and More Than Real, and colts Silver Medallion (Aug. 4) and Tiz Blessed (Aug. 7). Winner of the Jim Dandy and Travers in 2006, the freshman sire was represented by his first winner at Saratoga in Saturday’s eighth race. A half-brother to Andromeda’s Hero, Stay Thirsty rolled to a front-running 5 1/2-length victory in 1:11.01 for 6 furlongs. Stay Thirsty was making his second start for owner Mike Repole, who bought the colt for $500,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s February sale at Calder. Stay Thirsty was second in his debut July 15 at Belmont Park. “Obviously, he got a lot out of his first start,” Repole said. “He’s a horse that’s bred to go a mile and a quarter, mile and a half, so when you see them go that fast at 6 furlongs, you’ve got to get pretty excited.” Favored at 3-5, Stay Thirsty dueled long shot Fair Whit into submission after testing fractions of :22.70, :46.27 and :58.45, then steadily pulled away from the field. Fair Whit comes from the barn of Tom Albertrani, who trained Bernardini. Among the competition for Stay Thirsty in the $50,000 maiden sprint was Brock, a Distorted Humor colt bought out of the same sale by Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stable for $2.3 million. Fair Whit was a $400,000 yearling purchase by Darley Stable. Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher had considered running Stay Thirsty in Monday’s Grade II Saratoga Special, and will now take a look at the Grade I Hopeful Sept. 6. “I wanted to take the safer, more conservative route, and then go for the Hopeful after this,” Repole said. “He was the best horse in the race, by far. You want to see them do it that way.”

Stay Thirsty gets a well-earned spray after winning Saturday’s eighth.

ADIRONDACK STAKES PREVIEW – SUNDAY

Like Old Times

Kimmel, Prado together again in 2YO filly stakes

BY PHIL JANACK

In 1999, trainer John Kimmel lured jockey Edgar Prado from Maryland to ride full-time in New York. They won two stakes at Saratoga Race Course that summer, the Amsterdam with Successful Appeal and the Adirondack with Regally Appealing. Eleven years later, they team up again in the Grade II Adirondack for 2-yearold fillies with Goldmark Farm’s Silvislip, who will break from outside post 10 in today’s 6 1/2-furlong sprint. “I’ve been fortunate to win it twice,” said Kimmel, whose first Adirondack victory came with Flat Fleet Feet for his father, Caesar Kimmel, in 1995. “Winning a stakes at Saratoga is nice. Any stakes, any time of year, are nice. I think she deserves a shot in there. I know she won’t be one of the favorites, but they base everything off those (speed figures). She did what she had to do to win the other day. I’m not saying she couldn’t improve, and Edgar was very convincing that he thought she would improve off the race.” A dark bay or brown daughter of Forestry, a Grade I-winning sprinter at SaraSee Adirondack page 19

Continued from page 18

toga, Silvislip made her career debut on a sloppy, sealed track July 23, racing three wide and splashing home in front. She is one of five in the field with just one lifetime start, and one of seven coming into the race off a victory. There are no horses wheeling back from the Grade III Schuylerville, won by Le Mi Geaux on the same day Silvislip broke her maiden. “We’re like everybody else, one win and not much experience,” Kimmel said, “but at this time of year with these young horses, that’s kind of what you get. The a-other-than hasn’t been going, so you have to run in a graded stake. She seems to be pretty professional. She didn’t have much adversity last time, like kickback or getting in tight quarters. There are a lot of new things that she’s probably going to have to deal with in this race, but it’s a chance for us to see what she’s made of. If she shows well, then we can plan accordingly. This age group of horses, they can improve pretty dramatically off of one start.” Though she raced near the front throughout in her debut, Kimmel doesn’t feel Silvislip needs to be on the lead. “You don’t want to take away what comes easy for her, but I don’t anticipate her being like the two fillies in the Schuylerville that went flying out there in 21 and change and then they all walked home,” Kimmel said. “I would anticipate that she would put herself in a good stalking position. She came back from her last race and worked a nice five-

eighths last week. She’s probably sitting on another good performance.” With Silvislip’s Opening Day win the lone Saratoga victory thus far, Kimmel would like to use the Adirondack as a springboard to further success at the meet and beyond. “Hopefully, we can kind of get it rolling again,” he said. “We’ve been wallowing in this third and fourth position here for a while. It’s not like we’ve been running bad. We’ve had a couple horses that I think could have placed in graded stakes, but what can you do? It’s over. We’ll move on and take it from there.” Position Limit comes into the Adirondack off a sensational debut where she won by nearly 7 lengths at Belmont Park July 14. Owned by Starlight Partners, headed by Schenectady native Don Lucarelli and Saratoga Springs resident Jack Wolf, the Bellamy Road filly is trained by Todd Pletcher.

“It was a pretty fastly rated race, and I like the way she’s trained since then,” Pletcher said. “She seems to be going in the right direction, carrying her weight well. She’s a big, strong filly to begin with, but she’s responding the way you’d like to see her.” Purchased privately following her maiden win at Calder Race Course May 15, Miss Sarah Brown makes her first start for new connections Curragh Stables, Gene Cahalan and James Covello. John Terranova took over training duties from Larry Bates, and has given the Mass Media filly a steady string of works for her step up to graded company. “Our bloodstock agent, Nick Sallusto, has bought a lot of nice horses over the last several years, and he found her and pointed her out to us,” Terranova said. “He had gone down and seen her and liked what he saw, and put together a group to buy her. Ideally, I don’t like

going in the Adirondack, 6 1/2 furlongs and she hasn’t run since May, but a lot of them are the same way in here. She’s looking very, very good. She just looks like a runner. She does it all right; she’s fast and classy. We’re excited about seeing what she can do.” Nina Fever and Tristanme are the only horses with previous graded experience. Co-owned and trained by Wesley Ward, Nina Fever romped in her maiden win on Keeneland’s Polytrack before taking on males in the Grade III Kentucky Juvenile at Churchill Downs, where she was last of five though beaten just over 4 lengths. Owned by Heiligbrodt Stable and trained by Steve Asmussen, Tristanme makes her firth start. She broke her maiden on the Polytrack at Woodbine prior to running second by a neck in the Grade III Debutante at Churchill on June 26.

sunday’s Saratoga entries

I was full of anticipation. I could not wait to get to the racetrack. I paced the paddock. My mouth was dry. I had a knot in my stomach. But I was in awe of my horse. My heart pounded. I thought the gates would never open. I thought the pace was too fast. I thought the jockey moved too soon. I thought we still had a chance. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I pumped my fists. I jumped for joy. I won! I hugged my family. I thought my dad would be proud. I congratulated my partners. I called my friends. I lost my voice. I stood in the winner’s circle. I celebrated. that night, i dreamed of doing it all over again…”

SARATOGA SPECIAL STAKES PREVIEW – MONDAY

Taking the next step

Kantharos, five others entered in 2YO stakes

BY MIKE KANE With unbeaten and mighty impressive Kantharos in place, it took some work Friday morning to find a handful of runners to complete the field for Monday’s featured Grade II Saratoga Special. Two supplemental entries, Wetzel and Blue Right By, came aboard and the first-time starter Manchurian High answered the call for the 6 1/2-furlong stakes for 2-year-olds. Though six were entered, only one of Rick Violette’s colts, Bail Out The Cat and Sovereign Default, will run. The Saratoga Special, which predates the newspaper by 100 years, is the third race on the program. Kantharos is the star of the show. The Stonestreet Stables colt trained by Steve Asmussen crushed maidens by 11 3/4 lengths on a sloppy surface at Churchill Downs May 13. If there were any questions about whether the wet conditions might have contributed to the performance, they were answered in his 9 1/2-length victory in the Grade III Bashford Manor July 3 at Churchill. Among the horses he beat that day – after stumbling at the start – was Kentucky Juvenile winner Lou Brissie. “He’s looked great in both of his racSee Special page 24

Kantharos will likely be a heavy favorite in Monday’s Saratoga Special.

Three elegant tales filled with horses as complicated and spirited as their human counterparts, these are inspiring stories of courage and hope and the ways in which all love — even a horse’s — has the power to heal.

es and hopefully it continues,” Asmussen said. Well-regarded 2-year-olds will often be pointed to the Sanford Stakes at the beginning of the meet and the Grade I Hopeful at the end. The earlier opening of the track July 23 for the expanded 40-day meet pushed the Sanford ahead by nearly a week so the Saratoga Special became the target for Kantharos. “He ran really fast in the Bashford Manor (1:09 4/5) and we gave him a little time to recover from that,” Asmussen said. Bail Out The Cat, a son of Tale Of The Cat, broke his maiden first time out at Belmont Park and was the favorite in the Sanford. His race was pretty much finished at the start. “We came up here and he had the unfortunate incident where he kind of blew up right as they sprung the gate in the Sanford,” Violette said. “He came out of the race very good; he’s been terrific at the gate since. He hasn’t twitched an ear wrong.” Violette has some flexibility with his colts, owned by Klaravich Stable and William Lawrence, and will make the call on which one will go Monday morning. Sovereign Default broke his maiden by 2 lengths first time out July 15. “Originally, he was definite for this race, then he had a little bit of a flat breeze,” Violette said. “The next breeze was much better. I thought we would

hedge our bets and it gives us to Monday to decide which horse we want to run. I wouldn’t mind waiting for the Hopeful with Sovereign Default. I think certainly the seven-eighths is within his scope.” Violette said he thinks Bail Out The Cat might handle a wet track better than his stablemate. Wetzel is a Successful Appeal colt trained by Richard Dutrow for IEAH Stables. The colt was purchased after his maiden victory and moved from Asmussen’s barn. He was fourth in a wide trip in the Kentucky Juvenile. Dogwood Stable’s Blue Right By, trained by Dallas Stewart, broke his maiden at Churchill Downs in mid-June and was a well-beaten seventh in the Sanford. Trainer Will Phipps is making his first venture into graded stakes company at Saratoga. The former assistant to Bill Mott went out on his own in the fall of 2008 and Manchurian High is one of his 18 horses at Saratoga this summer. Phipps said he was happy to support New York racing by taking a shot with the colt in a graded stakes. “He has been breezing along and having good, long two-minute licks as well in between the short works,” Phipps said. “The horse is fit and ready to run. It will be interesting to see what he does.” Freddue Lenclud will ride Manchurian High, a son of The Daddy, for Bluegrass Empire Stables. “It’s a tough spot,” Phipps said. “Crazier things have happened, that’s for sure. We’re going to give it our best.”

LETTERS TO THE SPECIAL

High praise for The Chief The New York Times had an article (July 2, 2010) on Allen Jerkens who is still training at 81. I sent him a letter praising his accomplishments and his style. In my opinion, he is a complete horseman and perhaps the best trainer ever. A real legend. I also appreciated how much fun he and his son Jimmy have together, given my father and I both participate and love the sport of timber racing. Given his experience, I was interested in knowing the best horse, race and jockey Mr. Jerkens ever saw. I wrote the letter and sent it to Belmont Park stable gate. I've never met Mr. Jerkens and doubted my letter would actually make it to his barn, let alone get a response. A few days later, he called and left a message on my cell phone (the number was on my letterhead). I was worried he wouldn’t call again but I was pleasantly surprised when he called again a few hours later. We had a wonderful conversation about horses, jockeys, races, polo and steeplechasing. His reputation for being a class act is well deserved. Arcaro, The Shoe, Citation and Spectacular Bid were among the several “best ever” horses and jockeys. He said the best race he ever saw was the 1962 Travers (Jaipur). I’ve since watched the Jaipur Travers on YouTube

many times. I also mentioned the conversation to my father and he claimed Jonathan Sheppard told him 20 years ago the best race he ever saw was the 1962 Travers. I then sent the Times article to Jonathan and he confirmed his view of Jaipur’s victory. I hope to see Mr. Jerkens win a big race at the Spa this year. Charlie Fenwick III Baltimore, Md.

Saratoga a hit with rookie visitors Sometimes it is so hard to visit a place that you have been hearing about for decades, particularly if people rave about it and start every sentence with “you should . . .” Inevitably, in your longing to go there, you build up a pretty substantial picture in your mind of what it will be like. That was the precursor to our first trip to Saratoga, which happened Aug. 5-6. And I am happy to say the real thing surpassed our expectations – by a lot. We were amazed that the entrance just “happened” along a lovely residential street. No ugly signs, (well, no signs; we wouldn’t have found it if we weren’t following family who had GPS), no chain restaurants, no huge parking lots, just lovely

! t e B st e B

residential streets, retaining their century old trees and “bam!” The Racecourse. I wasn’t quite prepared for the beautiful plantings and flowers, what a treat and all color coordinated. But what made the whole experience so special was the friendly welcoming attitude of absolutely everyone we encountered. The ticket takers, the people next to us in the seats, on the rail and in the paddock, the betting clerks, the security guards, the parking attendants, EVERYONE was pleasant. I think it is because they all love Saratoga and feel like it is their event and therefore you are their guest and they want you to have a good time. So, thank you Saratoga. We did have a good time, and only hope we can return, and soon. Martha and Jack Strawther Orange, Va.

cupofcoffee by Sean Clancy

First thing Friday morning, Chuck Lawrence walked Coax Liberty around Graham Motion’s barn. Still dark, the day was just coming to life as groom Bernie Sanchez cleaned Coax Liberty’s stall and some old friends of Lawrence’s parked their car next to Motion’s barn. Lawrence yelled – a Fair Hill reunion at Saratoga. A couple of hours later, after the second break on the main track, Lawrence guided the 2-year-old filly the wrong way past the half-mile pole. Coax Liberty shied, mildly, from something on the outside rail, Lawrence braced deep in his long stirrups and gave the filly a pat on the neck. Lawrence laughed deeply. “I haven’t been on a horse in a couple of months,” he said. Some things never leave you. At the end of the morning, with Coax Liberty tucked away in a deep bed of straw, Lawrence soaped his saddle, cleaned his green saddle pad and Coax Liberty’s bridle on the wooden rail outside Motion’s tackroom. A former two-time champion steeplechase jockey, Lawrence brings the best he’s got to Saratoga for today’s Adirondack. Coax Liberty, owned by Alina Muther’s Copper Penny Stable, is 20-1 on the morning line.

Back in Town

“Alina bought this filly at Ocala and told me she was coming, I didn’t know anything about her,” Lawrence said. “The first few times I worked her I thought she was just ordinary because she was off the bridle. Then we asked her, we were like, ‘Wow, she’s got an engine.’ I told Alina, she could be a really good one because she’s so laid back and waits for the rider to tell her when to go. Hopefully I’m right.” Coax Liberty closed ground in her first start, winding up second in a Delaware Park maiden. She returned three weeks later to win a 5 1/2-furlong maiden and booked her ticket to the Adirondack. Utilizing his barn at Fair Hill and an in-house Pennsylvania breeding program, Lawrence has put together a solid season this year, winning 14 races from 54 starters for a 26-percent strike rate. Of the trainers with horses in the Adirondack, Lawrence (James in your program, but “Chuck” to the world) trails only Pletcher and is ahead of guys named Baffert and Asmussen. Born and raised in Marshall, Va., Lawrence grew up thinking that winning the nightcap at Charles Town was big. The Virginia boy came north and hitched on the horseman-making machine of Hall of Famer Burley Cocks. Lawrence rode from 1985 to 1995, won all there was to win, but was always thinking about becoming a trainer. He rode here in 1995. He returns with a stakes filly in 2010. “The last couple of years, I’ve gotten better quality horses,” Lawrence said. “I’m a little older and wiser and learned to put horses where they belong, having said that, I’m putting her in a Grade II stake, hopefully we’ve made the right decision. A lot of people were calling trying to buy her, this is what they were going to do with her – why not let Alina have some fun and

experience Saratoga? Who knows, maybe we get lucky and she’s as good as I think she is.” Lawrence used to come to Saratoga as one of those hard-living, hard-riding jump jockeys. He stole a canoe once or twice, closed down the Rafters and Sneaky Pete’s a few times as well. He pulled off the rare A.P. Smithwick/New York Turf Writers Cup double in 1993 aboard the iconic Warm Spell. He learned the game from the ground up, riding for Rokeby Stable, Virginia Kraft Payson, Mrs. Walter Jeffords, Dr. John Griggs, Mrs. Miles Valentine, Brushwood Stable . . . deep-rooted supporters of flat racing and steeplechasing. “I wish a lot of people could experience Saratoga. We race the Charles Town, Penn, Philly circuit, unless you’ve been to Saratoga, you can’t imagine what it’s like to be here,” Lawrence said. “I remember winning the Turf Writers the first time, that was amazing. I was a young, dumb kid, it was such an honor to be a jockey. Randy Romero, Antley, Cordero, Santos, it was an honor to walk in there, to actually win races up here. When I rode for Rokeby, I kind of grew up on the farm, it was an honor to wear those silks and be at that level.” Now 44 and a father of a young son Chase with wife Beth, Lawrence will try to reach that level again when Coax Liberty makes her third career start in the Adirondack. “It’s a big race but I try not to put too much pressure on me or the filly,” Lawrence said. “I think she’ll relax and go two turns. This is a steppingstone. There are a lot of fast horses out there, it’s the ones who will pull up after a five eighths, three quarters of a mile work and they’re ready to go again. You don’t come across horses like that every day.”
