The Special quotes from Saratoga
“Is the summer reading policy the same if I come home early?” Ryan Clancy, 17, to his mother (obviously he’s not finished his reading)
“Even though I’m 3,000 miles away and nothing is quite the same as grabbing a Saratoga Special and a breakfast sandwich to enjoy on the golf cart, the sheer fact that I can still peruse The Special at Del Mar is great. It’s like a little piece of home while you’re at camp. Thank you, thank you.” Online reader Michelle Yu, from Del Mar
“We’ll find out.” Position Limit’s owner Jack Wolf to the comment, ‘She’s good,’ in the paddock before Adirondack
“The one you would draw a natural comparison to is Ashado, because of the connections, the big, scopy filly, precocious but you think is going to run further. When you look at her out on the racetrack, same silks, same color, that’s what you think of, we’ll hope it turns out like her.” Trainer Todd Pletcher, after Starlight Racing’s Position Limit won the Adirondack
“You could compare her to Ashado at this stage, definitely, a big lanky girl, fast enough to be there but doesn’t need to be on the lead.” Jockey John Velazquez about Position Limit
800-523-8143
“Those guys are like a fan club. I’ve run into them a couple places in different places. Pretty cool guys, typical race fans. They come, they drink beer, they have a good time, they’re younger guys, they’re here almost every day – we need more people like that.” Jockey Garrett Gomez, on the “Goin’ to the Go-Go” serenaders who greet him after every stakes win
“The Indians are back in action.” Trainer Dave Donk when seeing Jack Clancy and Jane Motion back on the golfcart Wednesday morning
“Remember the more no’s, the closer you are to a yes.” Embrace The Race’s Mike DeAnzeris, on sales
“You talking to me?” Exercise rider Richie Cronin, while riding a bike next to Channing Hill, to the comment, ‘Hey jock.’

WEST POINT STAKES PREVIEW
Trying for 3 the hard way Veteran Banrock eyes triple in tough NY-bred turf test BY MIKE KANE From a strong performance in the Grade I United Nations, Straight Story returns to New York-bred company Thursday to face the likes of Banrock and Icabad Crane in the West Point. While Straight Story’s fourth by 2 lengths in the United Nations and other strong outings against open company make him the horse to beat in the 9-furlong West Point, there is no doubt Banrock will be the sentimental choice. He is, after all, going for his third consecutive victory in the race, run on the inner turf course as the eighth of 10. Banrock, 7, has been a dependable performer for Nyala Farm and trainer Tom Bush. The Go For Gin gelding has compiled a record of 12-5-4 from 33 starts and earned $822,140. Much of his success has come in state-bred company, but he has done well through the years against open company. See West Point page 6

“He’s been good to us,” Bush said. “He only runs seven or eight times a year and that always helps. He gets a lot of time off in the winter, he’s done well by that and the owners are very much on board with that kind of program for him.” Banrock made his 2010 return in Belmont Park’s Kingston for New Yorkbreds May 30, but saw his three-race winning streak come to an end with a fifth behind Minnie Punt, a rival again today. Bush shipped to Monmouth Park next for the July 10 Battlefield and Banrock made his typical late run, took a short lead in the stretch but dropped a neck decision to Violon Sacre. “He ran great that day,” Bush said. “In fact, he made the lead a little early in that race and that probably cost him the race, but it was just the way the race unfolded. I thought he brought his ‘A’ game that day, for sure. He’s done very well since he’s gotten up here. We’ve breezed him three times, a week apart, and he seems to be doing as good as he’s ever done.” In 2008, Banrock won the West Point in his fifth start of the season, drawing off late to prevail by 2 lengths in soft turf. Last year, the West Point came fourth on the list and followed two tough losses to Presious Passion at Monmouth. On firm turf, Banrock edged Pennington by a head. Bush acknowledged that this year’s edition – Banrock’s third start of the year – poses a difficult assignment. “It’s a tough race,” he said. “Straight Story is in good form. We’ve got him to beat, for sure.” Alan Garcia, aboard for the Battlefield, takes the return call on the 3-1 second choice, who breaks from post 11 in a field of 12. Straight Story, a 4-year-old Giant’s Causeway colt owned by Richard Santulli and trained by Alan Goldberg, has
been tough this year. He opened his campaign with a second by a head to Minnie Punt in a state-bred allowance/ optional claimer at Belmont Park May 1 and easily won that condition at Belmont May 29. He went to open company at Monmouth and won an allowance start by 4 1/2 lengths June 20 and then ran well in the Grade I United Nations July 3. Javier Castellano rides the 5-2 favorite, who has won four of 14 lifetime starts. Minnie Punt stepped out of state-bred company to run fourth behind Banrock in the Battlefield. The Gold Fever gelding opened the year with back-to-back wins at Belmont for trainer Mike Miceli and owners Marjac Pino Stable and Vince Bommarito. Jose Lezcano takes the riding assignment on the 9-2 third choice. Suzann Bobley’s Pretty Boy Freud gets back to state-bred company after three open allowance tries this year. The 4-year-old son of Freud finished fifth at Belmont May 31, third at Belmont June 26 and then just missed when second (beaten three-quarters of a length) here July 29. Trainer Leo O’brien puts John Velazquez on board the 15-1 shot who is also entered on Saturday. Earle Mack’s Icabad Crane is a proven commodity on dirt and most recently finished a neck behind Giant Moon in the Evan Shipman here July 26. Trainer Graham Motion said the 5-year-old Jump Start gelding came out of the race really well, and called the West Point a turf experiment. “He ran one time on the grass and it was sort of a disaster, it was very soft and I don’t think he was doing that well at the time,” Motion said. “I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt and give him another shot at it. He’s always trained well on the synthetics; usually those horses run well on the grass.” Icabad Crane finished 20 lengths behind the winner, Banrock, in the 2009 Kingston at Belmont Park. See West Point page 8

“For lack of having a better option, I’d love to give him another shot on the grass,” Motion said, “but I’ll only run him if it’s firm. I don’t want to run him on soft turf again.” The forecast is for more dry weather, so Icabad Crane (Julien Leparoux, 8-1) is likely to get another chance. “There are a couple of very competitive horses in here,” Motion said. “The fact that he’s up here and he’s doing so well and we really don’t have another option. There’s no other stake up here for New York-breds on the dirt. It gives me a good opportunity to try him again.” Three-year-old homebred Come Undone (Rajiv Maragh) represents Flying Zee Stable and trainer Phil Serpe. The son of Catienus has won twice this year. Flying Zee trainer Carlos Martin entered Writingonthewall on a quick turnaround from a win here Saturday. Ramon Dominguez gets the ride on the 5-year-old son of E Dubai. The entry is listed at 8-1 on the morning line. Owner, trainer and breeder Scott Schwartz sends out Pocket Cowboys (Edgar Prado, 15-1) for a return to state-bred competition after running credibly in three open optional claimers, including a half-length defeat here July 31. Adam Madkour’s Spa City Fever, who defeated Come Undone here July 24, goes for his third win of 2010 for trainer Pat Kelly. The 4-year-old Roaring Fever gelding (15-1) could be a pace

factor for jockey Jorge Chavez. Nikolas Kondilas’ Midnight Billy (Jose Espinoza, 30-1) has won three of his 10 starts this year for trainer Juan Ortiz and exits the same July 24 race. Phil Birsh and William Gildin’s Kutais (Garrett Gomez, 20-1) ships

I was full of anticipation. I could not wait to get to the racetrack. I paced the paddock. My mouth was dry. I had a knot in my stomach. But I was in awe of my horse. My heart pounded. I thought the gates would never open. I thought the pace was too fast. I thought the jockey moved too soon. I thought we still had a chance. I screamed at the top of my lungs. I pumped my fists. I jumped for joy. I won! I hugged my family. I thought my dad would be proud. I congratulated my partners. I called my friends. I lost my voice. I stood in the winner’s circle. I celebrated. that night, i dreamed of doing it all over again…”

Retirement Party Connie Bush
As part of Thoroughbred Retirement Day at Saratoga Wednesday, former stakes horse Ashkal Way returned to the scene of his victory in the 2006 Bernard Baruch. Now 8, the son of Ashkalani belongs to ESPN television broadcaster Jeannine Edwards and pursues a new career as a dressage horse. As a racehorse, Ashkal Way competed for Godolphin Stable and trainer Saeed bin Suroor. In addition to the Grade II Baruch, the Irish-bred won the Grade I Citation at Hollywood Park and Grade II Kelso at Belmont. He retired in 2007. In addition to the visit from Ashkal Way, the day included donations by NYRA to the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Old Friends, and the Exceller Fund, and displays from various rescue organizations.

inda Rice won’t lie to you, it’s tough to run against Silver Timber. The trainer lost the turf sprint specialist through the claim box last spring, he won six races for new trainer Chad Brown and showed up as the solid favorite for the Troy Stakes Wednesday. “I love Silver Timber, I bought him as a 2-year-old, developed him into a turf sprinter and then I have to go try and beat him. It’s not easy,” Rice said. “A horse you bought, you raised, you made him a stakes horse. I had some client pressure, they were having financial trouble and they wanted to get aggressive and we got caught.” Rice threw two of her best sprinters at her former servant; Awakino Cat went off second choice and Ahvee’s Destiny went off third choice in the $70,000 feature. Awakino Cat and jockey Alan Garcia took one for the team, harassing Silver Timber on the inside until abandoning him at the head of the stretch and taking See troy page 15

aim at Ravalo who opened a clear lead turning for home. Awakino Cat finally reeled in the leading earner in the field to win by a neck. Yield Bogey rallied for third after 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:01.90. Ahvee’s Destiny faded to eighth in the field of nine. Owned by Rice and F E Que Stable, Awakino Cat won the Troy for the second consecutive time to improve his career record to a top-heavy 9-for-20 with just one second and one third. “Obviously the favorite looked real tough on paper but both my horses, I thought, were live,” Rice said. “Frankly, I thought they both would run a big race in here, they were both coming into the race well. I was a little disappointed with Ahvee’s Destiny, we’re going to scope her and see what went wrong. That’s the thing about running two, one
of them might not show up.” Awakino Cat showed up, like always. In 20 starts, the farthest he’s been beaten is 5 1/2 lengths in the $250,000 Turf Monster at Philadelphia Park last fall. Rice bought the son of Stormy Atlantic for $60,000 at the Fasig-Tipton 2-yearold in training sale at Timonium. “He worked fast, I liked his conformation and I liked his pedigree,” Rice said. “And I could afford him. The only reason I was able to buy him was because he had a few vetting issues that kept his price at a level I could afford.” Awakino Cat ran once as a 2-yearold, finishing sixth over the Saratoga turf in 2007. He didn’t reappear until the following summer, when winning a maiden at Suffolk on the dirt. He finished his 3-year-old season with two wins from three starts on the turf, even finishing second going two turns at the Meadowlands. After that, it’s been turf sprints. He won four races, including See troy page 16

“We made a couple of hundred thousand with him and we got caught. He had a bad year, he was compromised with a few issues, I castrated him over the winter, he came back and all his issues were resolved, he came back terrific. two stakes at Saratoga, last year. Garcia improved his record aboard Awakino Cat to a cool 4-for-5, including three stakes. He didn’t give an inch to Julien Leparoux and Silver Timber, steering Awakino Cat’s head to the inside and refusing to give the favorite a stride of breathing room. Rice liked it. “I am so proud of Alan because if he hadn’t done that, we’d have had no shot. He had to get aggressive early otherwise he would have been shut out, he

and Silver Timber were roughing each other up and Alan did not give in,” Rice said. “He was aggressive and he needed to be. I could see at the three and a half (pole) he was riding the hell out of him, once he got the position, he sat on him. He rides a five and a half furlong turf race as good as anyone I know. He’s won so many of them for me, he knows when to ride and when to sit.” Awakino Cat certainly helps the cause. “He’s always been fast, I just manage him. I don’t want to take him off his game,” Rice said. “He’s got a long nose when he’s in the stretch, he lays it down. Once he’s in position, he gets it done.”

WEDNESDAY RACING RECAP
All Blue
Diablo’s Fire gives new stable second win of Saratoga meet by phil janack
N
o, owning racehorses isn’t as easy as David Greenhouse and Chris Boehning make it look. The former classmates and longtime friends from the Albany suburb of Latham earned their second victory in three starts at Saratoga Race Course when Diablo’s Fire (Javier Castellano) went gate to wire to scorch 10 rivals in Wednesday’s sixth, a $20,000 maiden claimer for New York-breds. Trained by Carl Domino, Diablo’s Fire ran 7 furlongs in 1:24.91, winning her second lifetime start by 9 3/4 lengths. She was the only horse to be claimed out of the race, taken by trainer Chris Englehart for owner Maggie Moss. “She ran great,” Greenhouse said. “She’s not ours anymore, so it’s bittersweet.” Greenhouse and Boehning operate as
Blue Bison Stable, a tribute to the sports teams at Shaker High School, where they graduated in 1983. Greenhouse now owns a food distribution company in Denver, while Boehring is partner in a Manhattan law firm. “We’ve been dreaming about owning horses for a long time, since we’ve been coming up here as kids,” Boehring said. “David sort of got it all started, and it’s gone from there.” Blue Bison won with its first starter at Saratoga, the 3-year-old Stormin Fever gelding Mystic Fever, on July 26. Four days later, they were fourth with Shine Upon in the Fleet Indian Stakes. “My dad had been into it for many years,” Greenhouse said. “I knew I had wanted to do it, and found the right connections with Jimmy (Jerkens) and Carl, so it’s been good.”
Diablo’s Fire hits the line with an easy win in Wednesday’s sixth race.
Following the claim, Blue Bison is down to three horses, including one in Colorado. The record includes five wins, a second and a fourth in seven starts. “We bought Shine Upon at Keeneland in September of 2008, and her first

race was November of 2009,” Greenhouse said. “That was our first start as Blue Bison Stable. Winning at Saratoga is a dream come true. I’ve been thinkSee wednesday page 19

ing about this since I was little, and to have two wins is incomparable. It’s very nice.” The Blue Bison boys met as eighth graders, and have maintained their friendship. “It’s totally the best,” Boehning said. “It’s what we’ve been thinking about since we were kids.” • Trainer Rudy Rodriguez continues to have a strong meet, picking up his sixth victory in the second race, for 2-year-old maiden New York-bred fillies, with first-time starter Saltamontes. The 2-year-old daughter of Wheelaway out of the Devil His Due mare Just Gabi stalked Lady Maureen from the gate before passing the pacesetting favorite at the top of the stretch and drawing off to win by 4 lengths in 1:11.83 for the 6 furlongs. “I just keep doing what I’m doing, and let the horses show up,” said Rodriguez. The trainer is now 6-for-26 with six seconds and three thirds. A homebred from Gabrielle Farm whose name means “grasshopper” in Spanish, Saltamontes (Garrett Gomez) had been training steadily for her debut, coming from Aqueduct to Saratoga this month. “She was working along pretty good; very steady, very nice,” Rodriguez said. “She ran very good. I was very pleased. Since I got her, she’s been doing nothing but good.” Despite her trainer’s success through the first half of the meet, Saltamontes was dismissed at 12-1, paying $27. Lady Maureen was caught near the wire by Spa City Lover for second. “Whoever is betting,” Rodriguez said, “they’ve got to like that.” • Three weeks after being burned by the speed, Sudden Silver had speed to burn. The 3-year-old Sudden Thunder filly sat behind front-runner Miss Lulu Belle, then pounced at the top of the stretch and sprinted clear for a 3 1/4-length victory in the first, a $10,000 conditioned claimer. On July 28, Sudden Silver chased a wicked pace of :21 4/5 and :45 3/5, took a brief lead before tiring and finishing second. She was nearly 6 lengths ahead of the rest of the field, which had trainer Gary Gullo optimistic in her return.
“She ran good today,” Gullo said. “The last time, I thought she ran well, also, but she just kind of got into a fast quarter-mile. I’m very happy with her.” Wednesday, John Velazquez got the filly to relax just off the front and she kicked clear late while covering the 6 furlongs in 1:12.22 for Manorwood Stable. Sudden Silver gave Gullo, a 50-yearold native of Floral Park, his first victory of the meet in seven starts, to go along with three seconds, one third and one fourth. “I’m happy to win,” he said. “It seems like I’ve been hitting the board with everything. I’m just glad I got it over with.” Gullo, the son of late trainer Tom Gullo, worked for his father from the age of 12 until going out on his own in 1980, when he won his first race at Saratoga. He has been here as a trainer ever since, except for two years when he quit training to work as jockey Jorge Chavez’s agent from 2002-04. In the last five years, Gullo has won five races in 45 starts at Saratoga, going 2-for-13 in 2006 and 2007, and 1-for-5 last summer. “I usually do OK up here,” said Gullo, who has 10 horses stabled at the Oklahoma training track. “It’s exciting, no matter what. This was a $10,000 non-winners of two, but it feels like a big race to me. I’m really appreciative of the atmosphere and the history of the whole place. I enjoy it. I love it. I’d love to win some more.” • Jockey Julien Leparoux wanted the lead for Intercoastal in the fourth race, a $25,000 conditioned claimer on the inner turf, but not at the expense of winning. After matching strides with 18-1 longshot Eldoktori in the early stages, Leparoux throttled back on the 5-yearold Dynaformer gelding. After a halfmile, they were 5 1/2 lengths behind the runaway leader, with another 9 lengths back to the rest of the field. “We planned to be on the front, you know, but you can see (Eldoktori) kind of ran off a little bit,” Leparoux said. “I tried to take hold of my horse. He’s a tough horse, but I do my best not to get too close, or my horse would have run off, too.” As Eldoktori weakened following a quarter-mile in :23.64 and a half in :47.08, Intercoastal gradually reeled him in, wresting the lead past the sixSee wednesday page 22

teenth pole and holding off late-running El Real Madrid to win by a neck in 1:43.25 for the 1 1/16 miles. “I knew I was going to catch [Eldoktori], but I didn’t know if they were going to come from back or not,” Leparoux said. “That kind of race, you never know. Sometimes, you can go in front like that and your horse kind of stops and everyone comes to you, and you’re just dead. We went pretty quick, and when I looked back at the threeeighths pole, they were still far behind me, so I was happy. We barely won, but that’s enough, right?” Leparoux is now 3-0 on Intercoastal for trainer Wesley Ward and owners Ken and Sarah Ramsey – winning back-to-back races this spring before the jockey got hurt. “Every time I rode him, they put him in the right race,” he said. “After I rode him, they put him in a little bit tougher spot while I was injured. But, I came back on him when they put him back in a spot he can win, so that makes a difference. I am 3-for-3, but they were the three right spots.” • Rajiv Maragh suffered minor injuries during the running of the seventh when his mount, 3-4 favorite Pico Dinero fell leaving the backstretch of the 1-mile maiden claimer on the inner turf course. Maragh, 25, lay motionless on the track for several minutes but was alert
and conscious while treated by emergency medical personnel at the scene. He was taken to Albany Medical Center, but X-rays were negative and he was released Wednesday night. Maragh was sent flying when Pico Dinero, racing on the inside in midpack, fell to his left and crashed into the portable rail. The 3-year-old Pico Central gelding trained by Dominick Schettino for Brooklyn Boyz Stable immediately got up and chased far behind the field, and was caught past the finish line by an outrider. Trillium Stable’s Avenging (Ramon Dominguez) won the $25,000 maiden claimer by leading at every step of the mile for trainer Tom Voss. The 4-year-old lugged out and finished a well-beaten sixth in his first start at the meet July 26 but handled Wednesday’s assignment without difficulty. Tied for seventh in the jockey standings with 11 wins, Maragh was replaced on his last mount, Glacier Bay, in the finale by Eibar Coa. Glacier Bay, trained by Alan Goldberg for Richard Santulli, went gate-to-wire to win at 12-1. • Most of the attention, and the money, were on Stanford Dolly, the former California claimer who was going turf to dirt for Wednesday’s third race. Meanwhile, trainer Eddie Kenneally had his eye on another filly making the surface switch. Flask, a 3-year-old daughter of Maria’s Mon owned by Stone Farm and Joseph Sutton, got out fast and stayed

Flask went 7 furlongs on the main track in 1:23.26 for her second win in four starts this year, both over dirt surfaces. She ran seventh of nine, beaten 9 lengths, in a 1-mile turf allowance here Aug. 5. “Her dirt races have been good,” Kenneally said. “We ran her on turf, frankly, because the dirt race didn’t fill

two weeks ago, and I wanted to run her at the beginning of the meet so I’d get an opportunity to run her back at the end. We ran her on the turf, just experimenting with it because you never know until you try it, but she didn’t care for it. She’s a dirt filly with a big future. We’re very excited about how she ran today.”
