Touched by Some Angels: “Slow Down Scarlett” by John Dorroh
Occasionally I come across a band that grabs my attention on the first listen. But not often. “Slow Down Scarlett” did that to me today. I popped in the demo disk that Courtney and Danny gave to me for the ride home from our interview. I noticed that each of the five songs was different from the others. Five songs and I was hooked. “Slow Down Scarlett” has been described as a “five-piece, Metro-east, indie-rock band.” Dylan Tucker, lead guitarist for the group, described their sound as “jambalaya rock,” meaning a lot of different types of sounds coming together. Goofy musical escapades, a bit of Latin spice, a serious observation about mankind’s depravity... and so on. I don’t care how they’re classified as long as I like the message and how it makes me feel. Danny Walls, drummer, told me “All people can relate to our music… we write about life experiences… often funny… such as a song about roller derby… sometimes serious… like ‘Dead Man Walking’, a song that speaks about the depravity of mankind…” The five band members met at their church, First Baptist of O’Fallon, where Walls has been a youth pastor for 10 years. Not only do they attend the same church, but they share military backgrounds as well. “We like playing music together at church so much that we started performing as a cover band around town,” said Walls. The Members Courtney King, a graduate student at SIUE, toured with the U.S. Air Force Band, and other armed service entities, as a flutist. She gave up her music career in 2007, thinking that there was no way to pursue it while raising children. Since then her three children have picked up the violin, and her husband is a professional trumpet player. Needless to say, getting back into performing was inevitable. No need to fight that, right? King has the ability to go from flute to vocals seamlessly, adding her own touch as she glides into some sultry rock. She beautifully yet forcefully demonstrated that in the last track of their demo. Someone described her performance as “rock flute.” (King presents some of her unusual techniques on YouTube. Check it out.) “We write and sing about acceptance, seeking love, finding heartache, and forgiveness,” said King. 6

March 2015 Dylan Tucker, lead guitarist, is a creative force who plays multiple instruments. “He’s outside the box,” said Walls. When he’s not making music, Tucker works as a wedding videographer, photographer, and a web designer. Walls is the drummer. He began his music career as a young tyke tackling the tuba and then bass guitar. “I didn’t play drums until I was 20,” he said. Walls also manages the group’s tour schedule. “Before we realized it, we were writing songs, getting asked to perform,” he said. Andy Lewis, a high school history teacher and football coach, sings and plays guitar. Lewis has sung all of his life and writes poignant lyrics with a blues-driven overtone that compliments the classic/alternate rock sound. Additionally, he writes more about faith, to which the group members aspire.
Website
Dan Kaltenbaugh, a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army, plays bass guitar. He owns Dijatek, a website development company. His background allows Kaltenbaugh to market and organize the music as a business. With such varied backgrounds and talents galore, these five Believers produce sounds that are atypical for a band that has its roots in a church. Certainly not stuffy or predictable, their appeal is across the board. I like that. The Venues Hemmingway’s Zen Garden (123 E. 1st St., O’Fallon) seems to be their home. However, they’ve played in New Baden, IL; at Cicero’s, The Heavy Anchor, and the Ready Room (St. Louis). King participated in the Midwest Salute to the Arts, while King and Tucker play acoustics duo in several venues in the area. King and Tucker will present an acoustic set on February 28 at Hemmingway’s. (Info below) March 13th will be their biggest gig ever. They’ll be playing all original music and some of their newest at The Chapel in St. Louis. Joined by Colin Rigsby of House of Heroes, they will play with The Fade from the Belleville, IL, area. Advance ticket purchase on line will save 20%, and everyone receives two drinks. What a country! As I drove along Hwy 50 toward Highland after my interview, with Slow Down Scarlett’s demo disk playing, I felt my spirits lift and looked forward to their upcoming shows. Advance Tickets WHO: Courtney King and Dylan Tucker at WHAT: Slow Down Scarlett, Colin from Slow Down Scarlett Brown Paper Rigsby, and The Fade Tickets WHAT: An acoustic set; performing a wide range of WHERE/WHEN: The Chapel covers from Bach to Taylor Swift as well as original 6238 Alexander Dr. compositions St. Louis, MO WHERE/WHEN: Hemmingway’s Zen Garden Friday, March 13, 7:00 PM-10:00 PM 123 E. 1st St, O’Fallon, February 28, 7:00 PM-1:00 AM StraightUpMagazine.net

Filmmaking to Save Lives: The Heroin Project by Dan Cross Ashley Seering was a student in the Mass Communications program at SIU-Edwardsville when she agreed to help make a public service announcement that ended up changing the direction of her career. Students often do these kinds of spots just to gain experience and have something to put on their resume, but this one, requested by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s office, turned into something more than just a homework assignment. It was a PSA about heroin. “I was always interested in journalism, which led to an interest in documentaries,” she explained. “I believe that, as a filmmaker, you have an obligation to help create change, and it is very important to me to help other people speak who don’t otherwise have a platform.” The PSA made Seering aware of a story that needed to be told, and people who needed a voice, so she teamed up with SIUE instructor Cory Byers and dug deeper into the issue. The result is an hour-long documentary called The Heroin Project, which gives a platform to people who have been personally affected by the rising heroin epidemic in the Metro East. Seering explains, “The movie focuses mainly on three stories: an assistant principal who lost her son to a heroin overdose, a father whose son is in prison and still struggling with his addiction, and a woman who is a former addict but is now clean and raising a family.”
Above & Below: Officer Chris Coyne in scenes from The Heroin Project
Seering and Byers began production last April, and the project consumed much of their time for the next nine months. Working with small crews (sometimes just the two of them), they conducted over 10 hours of interviews. In addition to the people listed above, the film includes appearances by Madison County Coroner Steve Nonn, Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons, and Troy Police officer Chris Coyne. “Most of the people who we interviewed were already advocates for the issue, so they were all very interested in talking, and their stories were really powerful and honest.” From a filmmaking perspective, the interviews look and sound amazing, though the film was shot with a minimal amount of equipment, mainly two Canon t2i cameras. A mark of a good filmmaker is getting quality footage from low budget gear, and Seering and Byers do a tremendous job of that in this movie, as you can see from the trailer on Vimeo. March 2015 Though the interviews are very moving, Seering and Byers wanted more to help make the movie different and effective. They are working with a composer from Florida who is producing original music for the film, as well as an animator to make the statistics shown in the film more visually interesting. They also decided to stage and film some recreations of actual events, such as the tragic overdose death of Chad Bell, who was left to die in a cemetery because his friends were afraid to take him to the hospital for fear of prosecution. Bell’s death helped lead to the passage of the “Good Samaritan” law in Illinois that grants immunity to anyone bringing an overdose victim to a hospital or calling authorities for help.
Scene from The Heroin Project
The promotional materials for the film state that “Chances are, you know someone who has been directly impacted by the devastating effects of heroin.” I can vouch for that. I’ve personally known two people who died from heroin overdoses in the Metro East. To drive that point home, the film will conclude with an “In Memoriam” sequence with photos of people whose lives were taken by the drug. They have received 16 such photos so far. Ched Hudgins
One of those photos will be of Ched Hudgins, the brother of my friends Kimmy Vrooman, Allison Scott, and Bill Hudgins. Ched passed away in April, 2013, just hours after he returned here from Alaska.
“It was his 5th or 6th time OD-ing,” his sister Kimmy explained. “He lived in Alaska, a successful executive chef on a small cruise ship. He would come home and binge, and occasionally OD. The heroin here lately has been very pure and very strong, and he was warned. He got off the plane from Alaska at noon and was ‘dead’ by probably 6. We unplugged him a few days later. EVIL DRUG YES!” There is no consensus about what is causing the rise in heroin overdoses; some attribute it to the crackdown on illegal prescription drugs and subsequent price increases for Oxycontin and other pharmaceuticals. Some blame it on the war in Afghanistan and increased flow of heroin out of that chaotic country. There are many contradictory theories, but no one doubts the scope of the problem. The number of heroin deaths in Madison County has grown from 5 in 2008 to 18 in 2010, and 23 last year, including three deaths in separate incidents on the very same night. The Heroin Project will help to show the stories and human emotion behind those numbers. Seering and Byers expect to finish post-production on the film in March. After that, they want to share it as widely as possible. “We want to make DVDs of the film available free of charge for anyone who wants to show it in schools or other places.”
The trailer for this film can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/117619140
Donations to support this project can be made here: indiegogo.com/projects/the-heroin-project-adocumentary
“It has been heartbreaking to hear from so many people about their stories with addiction,” Seering said. “But we are hoping that putting faces to the problem will inspire more people to get involved.”
In the background is an image of Ched Hudgins’ ashes being dispersed into tranquil waters. StraightUpMagazine.net

Staring in awe as crystalline stalactites glisten off the moonlit cave walls A revelation of wonder as you explore each crevice and corridor feeling out the moist rocky exterior Light a match, throw it off the bridge see how far down it goes Fish who’ve never seen sunlight ahh how their scales do glow True examples of innocence can never be seen; not in nature, babies, or the stars so serene It is something we look for; an ideal we encase, but we get so close to purity and punch ourselves in the face The example can never be won The subtext of thought is madness left hemisphere, right use them as one
You Talk Too Much He spoke till he sucked all the air from the room not considering whom he was talking at or to. The little woman before him he took little stock. What opinions could she have that were better than the ones he’s got. To this she gathered. He thinks little of me. He will suck all the air right away from me. And sure enough that is what he had done. He thought all that talking was fun. Had he listened or even heard her spoke. He may have noticed she was about to choke. On he went. She had no hope. Until, he asked a question. The answer he thought he’d already know. Will you marry me? Will you run my home? To this she could only answer, no, before falling to her death on her last breath she spoke. With shock he laughed. He laughed till he cried. She had pleased him, surprised him, and given him life. And what in return could his words really give. All he wanted now was for this woman to live. As he laughed and he cried the air was renewed there was enough for two to consume. And softly she stirred not able for words. He waited and listened for the sounds of her. Quietly he sat and waited. Healing a broken heart takes time, he contemplated. So around he planted little seeds that he knew in time would grow and begin to bloom. When the lady did rise to her surprise there were colorful roses and posies in her eyes. They smelled so fragrant and looked so good. And there a silent man. He stood, so gentle and patient, made kind by this time. She smiled knowing better than to begin with words, But if she were to speak she would say, He could be hers. By Katelyn Stapleton
