Our Hearts - Our Hands Article and Photography by Kathy Sax

A Treasure

Hearts and Hands has charitable offerings called comfort quilts which are small quilts that are handed to the local police department. The officers in return will use them on occasion to bring warmth and security to a child in need. Quilts of Valor is a way to tell a soldier “touched by war” how what they have done for our country is appreciated. These are a collaboration by a team -- each member with their own job to do; sewing, cutting, binding, etc. Together they create a masterpiece which is handed off to wounded serviceman to heal and comfort them. Darlene said at the last presentation of WWII veterans, “There was not a dry eye in the place.” The recipients were touched that someone cared enough to honor them with a gift from the heart.

by Mildred Hatfield

It’s more than a coverlet, More than a spread, This beautiful quilt That graces my bed. It’s laughter and sorrow, It’s pleasure and pain, It’s small bits and pieces Of sunshine and rain. It’s a bright panorama Of scraps of my lifeIt’s moments of glory, It’s moments of strife. It’s a story I cherish Of days that have been, It’s a door I can open To live them again. Yes, it’s more than a cover, This much-treasured quilt, It’s parts pieced together Of the life I have built. As a child, I remember the weekly quilting bees at our local church where the ladies would meet and share their love of quilting, creating works of art that were as individual as the quilters themselves; like snowflakes, no two were alike. The quilts were raffled at the church picnic to raise money for the parish. We have one of the largest Quilter’s Guild in the St Louis area: Hearts and Hands Quilt Guild. This group of women and men of all age ranges meets monthly in O’Fallon, Illinois. Darlene Pratte, who has been active in the group for 5 years, explained, “We are lucky to have such diversity in our membership. Due to our proximity to Scott Air Force, base we have a lot of military family members from all over the world that participate in our Guild, which brings variety and fresh ideas to the table.”

Hearts and Hands is proudly sponsoring a ”Quilts From the Heart” show on June 6th from 10 to 5 p.m. and June 7th, from 11 to 4 p.m. at Whiteside Middle School in Belleville. Admission is $5 at the door. I encourage everyone to support the arts and honor this group of talented artisans. The event will include raffles, vendors, appraisals, quilting demonstrations, and of course, beautiful quilts. This show will also showcase quilts by Megan Knobeloch from Belleville, Illinois who has been quilting since 1992. Megan shared the following on her Etsy site: “Through our quilt guild, I was able to absorb so much wonderful information from the prolific quilters that spoke to us and shared their beautiful quilts. I also started designing my quilts through quilt design software -- what a wonderful invention! I also paint and was able to

Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Smokers! by John Dorroh and Mark Johnson Photo Courtesy of Big Daddy’s 618

Everyone in and around Belleville knows that Big Daddy’s 618 is a party capital, right? Good food, adult beverages, and when the weather is nice, the patio. But maybe you didn’t know about the upcoming Craft Beer Walk and the Brew & Que BBQ Challenge that will take place on June 5th and 6th. This is the third annual event, and Big Daddy’s coowner Scott Schmelzel and the staff are preparing for heavier-thanusual traffic flow as the word continues to spread. Here’s what’s happening:

six chances to vote in the competition, those who buy only one item get one vote, and so on. Voting will last until 7pm with the winners being announced at 8 pm. Music starts at 1pm with local favorites Old Salt Union, then the Rat Rod Kings, followed by the consummate entertainment of DJ Benny. All of this action takes place on Main Street in Downtown Belleville between Church and Jackson. Big Daddy’s, the headquarters, is right in the heart of the action at 313 East Main Street.

Friday, June 5th A Craft Beer Walk in the evening (5-9pm) throughout Downtown Belleville will feature over 30 craft beers, souvenir beer mugs, shopping and live music. Steve Reeb will be playing on the Big Daddy’s patio. There will be drink specials and of course BIG portions of food – specialty burgers, wings, wraps, big hunks of meat, etc. Saturday, June 6th The Brew & Que People’s Choice BBQ contest opens at 11am. The barbecuing will take place throughout the day on two closed blocks of East Main Street and includes a challenge which will name a first place winner of the event. The 14 contestants will be able to create anything they like for the competition, be it ribs or pulled pork, but only the tastiest will get the custom-made pig ribbon and bragging rights for the year. Voting works like this: every sale of barbecue includes a ticket to vote, so those that buy six items will get

Proceeds go to benefit Belleville Main Street, which seeks to vitalize and invigorate Belleville’s downtown through coordination with local businesses, leaders, active community members and the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce.  ♦

in my boot, walking this path winter into spring. Forsythia spilling over sidewalks, roof tops, gardens of lesser flowers. I stand, petrified, in awe of this brief and vibrant gift. You drank too much again he says and I wonder at his disgruntlement on such a transformative day. I could jump from truth to metaphor like a restless kangaroo avoiding the unanswerable question. But I walk, instead, until gravel crumbles, destined to dust to ash to air. What pain to speak her name. Daisy, Daisy, Daisy. Extinguished.

Submissions There is a reason to keep walking,

Weakness repeated to our new-found acquaintances

Remember this when your feet ache

Misread and separated from meaning

Persuade yourself to move more

Gleaming with glory, gashes on your legs

in increments of faith we are restored

Passes unclaimed and so also unredeemed

Boarding our homes and hoarding our sores

Falsetto unfolding slow and shimmying along red bricks of breath

Comatose lovers sanctifying their union in dreams

Reminders of imminent death kept feathering for the seers

Reliving our lessons lucidly until fully learned

Lightly floating forward through familiarity

Wrapping our arms ‘round leftover meals

Parted with only partially

Sealed well and slumbering in refrigeration

Harping for our unsayable philosophies

Quietly shaping our sicknesses

Creaking like a rat’s moan

A range of rusting dustpans

Scolding our fingers with scalding stovetops

Liquid catacombs One drop will make you fail faster then you are used to

by Jacob Oliver

Rotting and reeking of time I am you, and you are I

Unusually livid and leering
