The Cell Phone Artist – Str8Up cover artist Nic Tullis by Dan Cross When Nic Tullis began getting attention for his insightful, thought provoking photos a couple years ago, a relative of his (whom he insisted will remain nameless) said that the pictures were not “real” photography— because they were taken on an iPhone. “I wrote that on a sticky note and slapped it on the back of my brain,” he explained. “And that’s why I still use my phone to take pictures, just to show people that it’s possible.”
time I ever had something to feel good about. I got a lot of encouragement from people about my photos. Kathy Gomric helped me get my very first show, and Paul (Seibert, editor of Straight Up Magazine) gave me a lot of encouragement, too.” While cell phone cameras are getting better and better, most people using a cell phone never end up with any shots worth displaying outside of Facebook (and maybe not even there). I asked Tullis how he manages to make his phone pictures so incredibly good. “My first pictures were just stuff like shots of my cat. But I kept going. I never took a photography class or anything. I learned mostly from watching YouTube videos. They always say you should take pictures from different angles, and that you should walk around and find interesting things to shoot, so that’s what I did.” “Walk” is the operative word here, because Tullis does not yet have a driver’s license. “I usually get my mom to drive me to St. Louis, and then I just walk around for three or four hours taking pictures. I like to go down by the library, because there are always lots of interesting people on the streets there.” A major focus of Tullis’ work concerns decayed urban areas and portraits of homeless people. “I’m not really a people person, but after awhile, I’ll get my nerve up and ask someone if I can take their picture. I know people who just take pictures of people without asking, but I wouldn’t want anyone to do that to me, so I always ask. Usually people don’t mind, but sometimes, they’ll say, ‘What’s in it for me?’ so I always Photo of Nic Tullis by Dan Cross carry around some change or a few dollar bills, because I don’t want to just Belleville native Tullis became interested in photography a couple take their picture and not give them anything in return.” years ago after watching a series of YouTube videos by DigitalRev TV, in That a photographer who sells and exhibits his work in galleries still which professional photographers were forced to do photo shoots using uses a phone to take pictures is amazing. What is even more incredible, only cheap, crappy cameras (really cheap and crappy—like a Lego camera however, is that Tullis also uses his phone to edit his photos. “I just reand a Barbie camera). “That really inspired me,” Tullis said, “because it ally like how easy it is to edit photos using apps like Snapseed. August 2014 Who: Nic Tullis What: Award winning iPhone photographer Where: Nic lives in Belleville. He and his photos can be found in Studio Visit Magazine, Belleville News Democrat, OnStl website, KSDK News Channel 5, National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows (GEAG Exhibit), Sheldon Art Gallery (The City at 250: A Celebration of St Louis in Photographs Exhibit), Soulard Art Market, St Louis Public Radio (CityScape), and – of course – Str8Up Magazine. His “City at 250” image, “Focus on St Louis”, graces the cover of this issue.
sive camera (or guitar, or computer) is the way to become a successful artist or musician or writer. But Tullis and his photos prove that this is not the case. And even though he has moved beyond the iPhone, he is still keeping things very simple and old school. “I have a DSLR now, and it’s good for taking pictures at night, and for getting shallow depth of field.” His camera is a Canon Xti—released 10 years ago. It has no folding screen, no video capability, a maximum ISO of only 1600, and a 10 megabyte sensor—well behind the specs of the latest digital cameras. On top of this is his choice of lenses. Or lens, rather. “I only have one lens, a Canon 50mm 1.8. It’s a pretty cheap lens. They call it the ‘plastic fantastic.’ But it’s great for portraits.” Tullis’ interest in the homeless has led him to create a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for the purchase of new equipment to continue pursuing his work. But don’t worry. He won’t get too far from his roots. “I’d like to get a T2i.” (The Canon T2i was released in 2010 and now sell for $200 to $300 on eBay.) Camera snobs would scoff at such an outdated model. Not Tullis. “I don’t care what the photo was taken with. It’s still photography.”

100 Reasons to Salute the Arts by Mark Johnson It’s a display of craft. It’s time spent under sun, under shade and in the pale moonlight. It’s a gathering of families, friends, communities and artists. On August 22, 23 and 24 at Everett Moody Park in Fairview Heights, the 26th annual Midwest Salute to the Arts is all those things and more. The fair is staged on the park’s baseball diamond under long white tents, communal spaces for artists and visitors alike. There’s a children’s area set up by nearby trees and artists will occasionally take breaks and go over and teach. This isn’t art behind glass and motion sensors; the Midwest Salute is about engagement and sharing, fun and family. Engagement comes in many forms, but the most visible is the fair’s well-known children’s area. Many of the Salute’s all-volunteer staff come from teaching backgrounds and bring with them their passion for education. As art education has taken a backseat in public schools, the Salute’s volunteer staff has made efforts to provide children with a venue that allows them to learn about art and gives them the chance to foster an appreciation for it.
Along with those activities, the Salute and the Fairview Heights Department of Parks and Recreation worked together to create a new student art contest, called “Feet in the Grass.” This 1st annual contest is open to Fairview Heights students in grades K-8, and the contest is simple: create a piece of art based on the theme “feet in the grass” on a standard 8.5x11 sheet of paper. All materials will be accepted, pencil, ink, paint, watercolor, oil and acrylic, and the submissions will then be donated to the “Mail Call Masterpieces” project which sends original student art to deployed soldiers. Every submission will be displayed at this year’s Salute, and the winners of the contest will also be published in the September issue of Straight Up Magazine in the submissions section. Submissions should be turned in at the Parks and Recreation Department or the public library in Fairview Heights by August 1. The contest’s impetus was clear: “We want to encourage our young minds, because they’re our future artists, our future doctors,” Sharon Kassing, Director of the Salute, said. Art does more than encourage children only; it encourages everyone equally, and each in their own way. The show has always been designed to take advantage of that, and thanks to that formula, 100 artists and thousands of visitors come each year. While visitors come to enjoy themselves solely, artHill Brin ists come to also take part in the show’s juried contest. Each year, the artists submit works for the competition and awards The children’s area features two areas, the Creation Station and the are given for Best of Show, Best of Category, the Art Council Award, and Children’s Gallery. The Creation Station is exactly what it sounds like, and Awards of Excellence. This year’s three judges are Nicole Dutton, Curator that’s where you’ll see volunteers helping children make their own art and of the William & Florence Schmidt Art Center, Melody Evans-Mess, Prothe occasional artist taking a break to come hang out with the kids. August 2014 heat, the Salute’s organizers have ensured that there’s a cooling station, fans to move air and the tents for shade to keep everyone as comfortable as possible. Even with 100 artists displaying their works, there’s yet more to do when you come out to the Salute. They don’t deviate from the tried-and-true offering of food and drink and their food court proudly features local non-profit Wayne Gao & Michelle Chang organizations who keep the profits to help their operations. The other necessary element for any outdoor event is music, an area that the Salute has never been a slouch in throughout its 26-year history. They’ve welcomed many famous or soon-to-be-famous acts in past events, and this year is, of course, no different. Friday night, the Well Hungarians will be the featured musical act. Their show will start at 7pm and end at 9pm. This band is one of the area’s most popular, and they’ve toured
ality who appears on many local stations, including Wild 104.9, 93.7 The Bull and Z 107.7. During the live remote broadcast there will be giveaways and other fun things to take part in, so be sure to show up or tune in. Alongside those summer staples, the Salute also brings together performers of all kinds. This year will be a perfect example of that, as evinced by the Bedouin Spice Belly Dancers scheduled to perform. Led by Camille Malaena, this troupe brings together many talented women who all came together after falling in love with belly dancing. Camille herself has studied belly dancing since 2002 and her style combines many different kinds of belly dancing along with other world dances into a hybridized, expressive dance all her own. The Midwest Salute to the Arts has always been a work of love for the hundreds of volunteers who give their time year-round to put on the show each year. Families come together to help out along with those who appreciate what art can mean to someone. Volunteers are the show’s lifeblood, and there’s always an opportunity to help out in any way you’d like – tearing down, setting up, planning or helping in some way during the show itself. With so many people so dedicated to putting this art fair Kathy Gomric on, there are countless reasons you’ll find to call the Midwest Salute to the Arts one of your favorite summer events. If you’ve never been, make this summer the one you find out what you’ve been missing. Stay connected to all things Midwest Salute on their website at MidwestSalute.com. You can also find them on Facebook, on Twitter at @salute_ arts_mw and on Pinterest. If you’d like to know more about volunteering, you can send an email to SaluteVolunteer@gmail.com.

Taste of Southern Illinois by Paul Seibert
It happens in cities and towns all across the nation. It happened here for the first time last summer. And, this month, it’s happening here again. The Second Annual Taste of Southern Illinois occurs on August 15th and 16th in beautiful Horner Park at Lebanon, Illinois. According to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, a “tasting” isDF “an event that is organized so that you can try different foods or drinks to see if you like them.” And so is the Taste of Southern Illinois. Some 20 regional restaurants will offer visitors a sampling of their favorite fare under the skies of beautiful Horner Park at Lebanon, Illinois. Each restaurant will operate its own tented kitchen. Each visitor will choose their “tastes” from the broad array of menu items available at this extraordinary festival. Truly a celebration of the diverse foods available in this region, visitors will be treated to smells and flavors that only such a gathering can generate. Be sure to come hungry. Beverage tents will offer a wide selection of your favorite soft drinks, beers, wines and specialty drinks. A full array of Budweiser products from Gray Eagle Distributing will include Lime-A-Ritas and Strawber-Ritas. A selection of craft beers from local brewer Excel Bottling Company of Breese will offer a complement to the variety of available standards; plus Fitz Bottling soft drinks – also locally produced. Present also will be Gray Eagle’s” Build-A-Bar”, a high-tech mobile beverage unit that folds out of a truck to create a bar unit, complete with wide-screen TV and all the other amenities typically only found indoors. And, speaking of complements, wouldn’t music be perfect with such a gustatory event? But of course. And Taste of Southern Illinois will provide visitors with an excellent variety of musical side dishes. Friday evening will find The Zydeco Crawdaddies filling the stage. A regional Cajon favorite, headed by Paul Jarvis, lets the good times roll – a family entertainment event. Sounds begin at 5pm. Saturday’s lineup starts with Uncle Hiram. The acoustic duo can be heard beginning at 11:15am. A consistent local favorite and consummate entertainer, Steve Reeb will take the stage at noon. Solo guitar and vocalist, he’s known for playing a little bit of everything - and he plays a lot of Johnny Cash.
Evening headliners will be the remarkable Rogers and Nienhuas. Internationally known, Terry Jones Rogers and Scott Nienhaus are one of the region’s most popular music ensembles. Both former members of the Byrds, Rogers and Nienhaus are noted for their pristine harmonies and searing instrumentation. In addition to their many original works, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to catch this truly great band, as they transport you back to the heyday of the 60’s and 70’s!! And opening for Rogers and Nienhaus will be the Voodoo Lounge Lizards of Dallas, Texas. Belleville native and SIU graduate Russ Bowman and Tom Prasada-Rao, made their local debut here last year. Voodoo Lounge Lizards are regulars at The House of Blues in Dallas, Dallas Athletic Club, Adair’s Saloon and various other clubs in the Dallas area. Performing light rock acoustic covers featuring 6 and 12 string guitar, violin and ukulele, the Voodoo Lounge Lizards deliver soothing acoustic leads and vocal harmonies sure to mellow the soul beginning at 2pm.

It was harder to watch her walk away than it was to know that she’d never come back. I can’t explain it exactly, because you’ve probably never seen her with her back turned to you, like you were just another street, a segue instead of a destination, but if you have seen it, then you know exactly what I’m talking about, and there’s no need for me to explain. She’s like that — immeasurable as an ocean, even though everyone knows what an ocean is. You can quantify the Pacific in terms of its volume, its depth, its temperature, but no amount of time spent memorizing the specifications can diminish the feeling of sunwarmed salt water loosening the sand directly beneath your feet, or prepare you for inhaling but the smallest portion of the wave you were unaware was heading your way after surfacing from a refreshing dive. I suppose what I’m trying to say is that she had soul. If the truth be told, she was a pain in my ass. She always did things like walk too slowly when we had somewhere to be, or run ahead and turn a corner while on an evening stroll, when I was weighted down with the it is from the dinner she’d prepared, that she never took a bite of because she’d insisted on watching me eat. Whenever we were with our friends, she’d kiss me in the middle of one of my sentences, and when we were alone, and the entire night sky hung as a painting on the hook of the crescent moon, she’d pull away from my reach, to leave me with a handful of longing sadder than the breeze singing in her short blonde hair. Everything that endeared me to her was hard to appreciate, but I managed. I came to know her intimately, as completely as my dog dying of old age, so you can imagine how I felt when she turned away for the last time, exhibiting a strength I’d never seen, when I was sure I knew every possible way there was to love her.
I am a starved artist soul from Troy, Illinois, finding a creative outlet in many aspects, particularly focusing on writings and visual art and a constant brainstorm on how to merge the two into one collective piece of art. My mediums include anything; preferably cheap, reused, recycled material, ink, watercolor, acrylic, occasional oil paints, charcoal...you name it, I will attempt it. I enjoy making something out of nothing, and with such a limited budget, I find myself using that particular approach, more times than not. I am currently interning as MySLart.org’s public relations and events coordinator, where I am grateful to continue perpetuating the artists of the metro St. Louis area, as well as advocate for my own art. Prior to my involvement with MySLart.og, I was involved at Concrete Ocean Art Gallery in St. Louis, where I helped curate shows and gave local artists an opportunity to show their work in a solo-style environment.
