Letter from the Editor If we think of life as a melody, most of the time the tune is sweet, a song of happiness and blessings…but for all of us, a dirge is sure to play, a soundtrack for the tragedies we cannot control. I want to tell you about a beautiful girl, I’m going to call her Lovely, because she was indeed lovely and sweet and all things good. Lovely succumbed to a terrible disease a few days ago, leaving a loving family in shock, devastated by their great loss. Lovely and my son were good friends in middle and high school. I always knew she was around when I would hear the sounds of classic rock coming from my son’s room, especially Led Zeppelin, one of her favorites. Cavin was never a fan of that “old” music, but Lovely and I shared more than a few conversations about our favorite songs. My son graduated from high school, then college and moved to Europe to follow his dream. Lovely stayed in the area, and we mostly lost touch except for the occasional Facebook greeting or chance meeting. I would hear from others how she was doing, her ups and downs, and I kept her in my thoughts and prayers. Over the past couple of years, the news about Lovely was much more positive. Through hard work and the support of her family, she was doing well, and it appeared that Lovely was going to overcome and create the bright future we all knew she deserved. But, Lovely stumbled, and addiction took her life. I wish I had a solution for the horrors of addiction; a way to ease the pain of families, like Lovely’s, who tried their very hardest to keep the worst from happening. But I don’t. Maybe if we all just love each other a little more, suspend our judgments and blame, and take a moment to really see how we are all connected, it would help. I’m not sure, but I do intend to try. I leave you with a verse from a song I will always associate with Lovely. Rock on beautiful girl. I’ll see you again one day. And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last When all are one and one is all… Led Zeppelin, “Stairway to Heaven”

Summer Soundtrack by Melissa Face

M

ost of my summer breaks have had soundtracks. Sometimes the songs played softly in the background, and I didn’t notice them until well after the fact. But it was far more common for the music to be the focal point, blaring and rattling our speakers while we drove, sang and danced along. I remember a summer trip in my teens when we drove through the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, into Tennessee. We spent several nights in Nashville, saw a show at the Grand Ole Opry, and rode the Wabash Cannonball at Opryland USA. I was in a typical teenage phase, caught between having fun with my family and trying to look much cooler than they were, in order to attract the attention of cute boys. That summer sounded like Alan Jackson’s “Chatahoochee” and Lori Morgan’s “What Part of No.” The sounds of my country summer (and my cowboy boot tank top) carried me into the fall and the start of another school year. A few years ago, the hits of The Beach Boys provided our summer tunes. We vacationed in Ocean City, Maryland, with our two young children and my parents. Early in the week, we found out The Beach Boys were in town and we bought tickets for all six of us. It was our children’s first official concert, just as it had been my husband’s and mine decades ago. We both saw the group with our parents when we were children, states away from one another. The concert was a blast. They sang all of their hits, including my favorite, “Don’t Worry Baby.” I danced and sang along to every song, and I swear Mike Love pointed at me and winked a few times during “Surfer Girl.” At the end of the show, I was hoarse but happy, and it seemed that everyone had (almost) as much fun as I did. Plus, our son left with the ultimate souvenir: a beach ball that Mike Love tossed into the crowd. It was a night and summer I will never forget, and all I need is that first “I” from “Good Vibrations” to take me right back.

food trucks, laughed with family, and pitched our tents at a nearby campground. On the last night of our trip, we were preparing s ‘mores for our final campfire when our music suddenly stopped. First my phone’s screen lit up in the night, then my husband’s. I knew something was very wrong. I texted my mom to let her know that I had no reception; I could text, but I couldn’t talk. She wrote back that my grandmother, Mammie, had died unexpectedly at home in her chair. Peacefully, but suddenly. The following weeks were filled with slow, heavy melodies. “I Can Only Imagine” and “How Great Thou Art,” songs from her funeral service, played on repeat in my head. I stayed up late at night and into the morning, replaying a video of Mammie and me singing “Blue Christmas.” And I worked until dawn another night, backing up photos and voicemail messages, so I would always have the recording of her singing “Happy Birthday” to me. This summer’s soundtrack ended with songs of sadness and loss. This playlist won’t last, though. I have lived long enough to know that it will take time, but eventually the tune will change; cheerful music will come back on, and we will find a way to dance again.

“I danced and sang along to every song, and I swear Mike Love pointed at me and winked a few times during ‘Surfer Girl.’”

For the past two years, our summer music took on a bluegrass sound, as we traveled to Red Wing Roots, a music festival in Mount Solon, Virginia. For three days, we listened to a variety of folk and bluegrass from artists all across the country. We ate from

Losing It!

I

by Erika Hoffman

“ ’m losing it!” I mumbled to myself as I rearranged letters, cards,

and ubiquitous junk mail on our foyer table.

“Dang!” where did I put that invitation to the Friday welcoming soiree?” I asked Bear-Bear, my miniature female dachshund. She gazed up at me empathetically and barked twice. I headed to the niche, also in the foyer, where a huge vase holds court, and behind it I’d stuffed the stately wedding invitation to Magnolia Plantation but not the other one for the night before. “I know I stuck it with the invitation,” I declared to Grylls, my male dachshund with the Romeo eyes. He looked worried and rushed back and forth mimicking my abrupt movements while I skirted here and there exploring all my dumping grounds. Hordes of clutter lay on the kitchen counter, on the coffee table in the seldom-occupied living room, and on the end tables in the nightlyused den. Nada. In my mind’s eye, I pictured the heavy stock paper, the black trim, the bold font, but couldn’t recall the event’s venue, the address, or the time. I didn’t think the place was within walking distance of our hotel in Charleston, so I knew I needed to google MapQuest but without a street to type in, it was a no- go. This revelation hit me on Monday, four days and a five-hour drive before Friday’s soiree. Dare I phone my good friend, Margaret, the hostess and motherof-the-groom, the busy person already in route to the destination wedding to tell her that careless me had lost her lovely invitation? Wouldn’t that appear thoughtless of me? Or maybe if she heard that I’d lost it she’d reach a conclusion I was beginning to fear – could this be the first sign of creeping dementia? So, after retracing my steps for the umpteenth time, after rummaging through my drawer where I stow memorabilia of past events, and after locating sundry lost objects in my search for this one particular envelope, I succumbed. I didn’t know the answer to the question: Where had I placed the invitation? What do game contestants do on TV quiz shows when they’ve searched their memories and don’t know the answer? They call a friend.

Suddenly, I knew exactly what happened to my invitation. I had a vision. I saw the scene. A month ago, Margaret asked me to lunch for my birthday as she’s done for years. On the phone, she made a small request of me: Would I bring the invite she sent with me? She had to mail one to a previously un-accounted for guest and was one short and didn’t want to have to order another 25. “Certainly,” I recalled saying. So, at my birthday lunch I gave her back her elegant invitation. Now, I felt relief. The mystery was solved. Immediately, I thought I should phone Betty to tell her the good news – I’m not losing my mind, after all. I know exactly what had become of that invitation. I picked up the phone, poised to tap in the number, but before I’d even pressed the area code, I had a pesky second thought – a realization. What was I to relate? That I returned the dang thing to our friend, the hostess of the event, and I’d no recollection of doing so? Hmm. That sounded a lot like I’m losing it. Ergo, my final decision? All in all, I figured it better to let folks think I’m a disorganized hoarder than tell the truth, which is that, sometimes, I sleepwalk through life. Two months later, Betty told me she’d figured I’d returned it to the hostess. “How’d you guess that?” I asked, totally surprised. “Margaret was short two.”

“In my mind’s eye, I pictured the heavy stock paper, the black trim, the bold font, but couldn’t recall the event’s venue, the address, or the time.”

I dialed up Betty. No answer. So, I texted Betty. Without delay, she sent a photo of the lovely invitation and mailed it back. PERFECTO! I reread the details. Before I keyed MapQuest, a memory gurgled up.

–Read It!–

Nicole Says…Read These Books October is National Reading Group Month and also, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The two books below fell perfectly into these categories. Both of these books are about literary romances, one fictional and one about a real couple that touched all of our lives. Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy (Release Oct. 29, 2019) by Cassandra King Conroy

The Wonder of Now (Sanctuary Sound #3) by Jamie Beck

Cassandra King was an author and a teacher who enjoyed living in Alabama. When she met Pat Conroy, she became swept up in a literary love story meant for the books. These two authors balanced each other and they cared about the same things, especially family. When he introduced her to the Lowcountry, his passion for this area became hers as well. The Lowcountry lifestyle welcomed her with open arms and this book is not only a journey through her relationship with Pat Conroy, but also how she grew to love her new home in South Carolina. Filled with anecdotes and family tales, as well as food and the majestic scenery, this book is for anyone who loved Pat Conroy or the Lowcountry.

Peyton Prescott survived breast cancer, and she would love to put the whole thing behind her. However, her brother convinced her to write a memoir, accompanied by his photographs. Now on tour, she must relive every detail, in every European town with no chance of taking some quiet time to recharge. Mitch Mathis has a new PR company that is relying on Peyton’s book to put them on the map. Yet, the more time he spends with her, the more his attraction grows. Will these two opposite souls find common ground? Or will this tour do more harm than good?

We all know Pat Conroy’s books and numerous readers were able to meet him at book signings. We also love Cassandra King’s books, especially The Sunday Wife. Both of these authors are incredibly talented, but the literary world, especially the Lowcountry, lost an icon back in 2016. Shortly after Pat Conroy died, I heard Cassandra King speak about his final book, A Lowcountry Heart. The love in her eyes and in her voice was obvious, as she reflected on his personality and how he used to interact with each and every reader. Reading this memoir was like reading a personal journal, and it gives us much more insight into their relationship. We all remember Pat Conroy as a literary legend, but he was a father and husband, too. For more on Cassandra King Conroy, please see Leslie Moore’s interview in this issue.

Peyton Prescott’s emotional journey of overcoming breast cancer will inspire many women. The honesty and reluctance is very real. Readers will be able to connect with her as they hear her inner thoughts. The European book tour brings the towns to life, so readers will want to pack their bags and plan their next trip. I have never read anything written by Jamie Beck, and I did not know that this book was number three in a series until I was working on my review. You do not have to read the first two books, in order to fall in love with Peyton. This book was an emotional roller coaster, while almost being a heartwarming travel-memoir. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the real, raw emotions that the author shared through Peyton. I look forward to reading the earlier books by this author.

Best Friends Forever

oon to be Charlestonian, Candice Adelle, created a one-of-a-kind photo shoot with her five year old son, Hayes, and best friend Holly. The two children became besties in 2018 when Hayes rescued Holly from bullies in their pre-K class.

“Hayes saw the other children making fun of her, immediately told them to stop, and stood in front of her so the children would stop their taunting,” Candice said of the day Holly was made fun of because she wasn’t wearing shorts under a dress and some of the kids saw her underwear. “From that day on, Holly called Hayes her prince. They’ve been best friends ever since.”

22

The pair is already planning to marry – Holly wants to tie the knot by age 10, but Hayes would prefer to wait until they are at least 41. Candice, a photographer at Candice Adlelle Photography, recently posted a photo shoot she did with the children and the incredible shots went viral. Hayes presented Holly with a floral ring and both are wearing formal outfits. Candice continued, saying, “They do have little sidebar conversations about their future wedding plans during play dates. No kidding! . . . They’ve worked out some of the details already; Holly insists on unicorns while Hayes just wants to make sure he has a ring for Holly!”

“Over the past year, Holly’s mom and I have become close friends and thought it would be super cute for these two to have a ‘best friends’ photo shoot! They were so excited to get dressed up and to do what best friends do! Laugh, play, run, dance! I love that we could do this for them! I hope that as the years pass, they’ll always be best friends and be able to look back on the special moments they shared! I loved bottling up this innocence for just a little while.” We all wish the best for these two precious children and hope they stay connected after Candice’s move to South Carolina. First Christmas Together: Starting New Traditions by Leslie Moore

You’ve said “I do,” the wedding gifts are put away and thank you notes are written. Your new home together is your sanctuary. Now the holidays are approaching – how will you celebrate and start new traditions that will become a part of every holiday together? Here are a few ideas to get you started. Mail Christmas Cards: There is something special about getting a card in the mail, especially in today’s digital world. Use one of your favorite wedding photos to make cards for your friends and family. Schedule Couple Time: We know your mother is expecting you for Christmas Eve dinner and your mother-in-law is making her special Christmas dishes for Christmas Day – and your mouth is watering just thinking about those delicious pies – but be sure to schedule time for just the two of you. Maybe take a couple of hours on Christmas morning to eat breakfast and exchange gifts, just the two of you. Make Your Community a Little Better…Together: Buy gifts for an Angel Tree or help with a food drive or maybe visit an elderly friend or neighbor – they would love to see the two of you and enjoy the cookies you brought as a gift. Sharing your good fortune with others is a tradition that will bring you joy year after year. Attend a Holiday Event: Our community has so many wonderful holiday events. Find one that you love and attend together. Brookgreen Gardens’ Nights of a Thousand Candles is one we love.

Host a Small Party for Friends: This may sound daunting, but invite a few good friends to enjoy an evening of holiday cheer. Choose a fun game to play – we love board games – and ask everyone to bring a snack and beverage to share. Holiday revelry for all! Put Up a Christmas Tree: This will be something you do every year, so make it fun! And, now is the time to be thinking about purchasing your own special ornaments. No matter what kind of tree you choose, shopping for ornaments is a great tradition to start. This year, you may need to buy more, but every year the two of you can choose one special ornament to mark the occasion. One of our favorite places to shop for all things Christmas is the Dicken’s Christmas Show and Festivals, www.dickenschristmasshow.com, held this year on November 14-17 in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. The Victorian Holiday Marketplace is a great place to find unique ornaments and holiday decorations, plus the Festival of Trees may give you ideas for your own tree!

Enjoy making the holiday your own…together!

An Old Familiar Ring by Jeffery Cohen

W

hen I was six years old, my grandfather, who was not known for his generosity, surprised everyone by taking me into town on a shopping spree. He bought me a plaid sports jacket and matching trousers, new shoes, a stylish hat with a feather on the side, and he had a ring made for me with my initials. It was the first ring I ever owned and I wore it proudly. A year later I had already outgrown my proudest possession. When my finger began to swell, my mother convinced me that it was time to retire my ring to the cigar box that held my baseball cards, my lucky rabbit’s foot, and the rest of my treasures. My ring finger remained bare until high school. My classmates and I waited for the day when our class rings were finally distributed. It was a heavy chunk of metal with the school crest and the year 1966 molded into it, my initials engraved inside the shiny band. I showed that ring off for nearly six months, and then I met my first love. In no time I was asking her to be my steady, handing over my class ring as a sign of my commitment. She wrapped tape around the way-too-large ring and slipped it on her tiny finger, giving me her ring in exchange, which I squeezed onto my pinky. We were wearing those rings when we said a tearful goodbye and headed off to different colleges, swearing our undying love. After six weeks apart, the love of my life explained that her undying love...had died. She was returning my ring. That summer, while horsing around in the backyard pool, my ring flew off of my slippery wet finger. I spent days searching every inch of the yard without success, deciding I was just not meant to have a ring.

gold bands, a promise to love and cherish each other – to wear those rings until death do us part. And I expected to do just that, but as the years passed by, that ring grew tighter and tighter until my finger was nearly turning blue. I decided that I would take it to a jeweler and have it re-sized. With great effort and a half jar of Vaseline, I was able to slide it off. Unfortunately, that slippery ring slipped right out of my hands and seemed to disappear into thin air. Believe me, I searched everywhere. I’m certain it’s still hiding in some unknown crack or crevice. I visited my mother, hoping she might have an idea of the best way to break the news to my wife. Sad and frustrated, I rationalized. “Rings are just a piece of metal. They have no meaning anyway.” My mother smiled and shook her head. She held out her right hand and pointed to the gold band on it. “You see this ring? After fifty years of marriage, my mother and father decided to redo their wedding vows. This was the ring my father placed on my mother’s finger at that ceremony on her golden anniversary – eighteen karat orange blossom gold.” Her eyes got teary. “When my mother passed away, I slipped it off of her finger and put it onto mine. Every time I look at it, I see her face, and how happy she looked that day. Rings do have meaning.”

A year later, a neighbor called. “Did you happen to lose your class ring?”

Years later, when my mother died, my father slipped that ring from her finger and put it on his own. He never took it off. When my father passed, I slipped that ring from his finger and put it on my own. Every time I look at it, I see their faces, hear their voices, and I can’t help but remember my mother’s words.

Last summer,” I explained, wondering why the question.

Rings do have meaning.

Well, my dog just came in carrying a ring in her mouth and I think your initials are on the band.” It was a miracle! I got my ring back, swearing never to take it off of my finger again. I only wish I would have remembered that when I removed it to wash my hands in the men’s room at work. By the time I rushed back to the sink where I’d left it, it was gone. Not really being a jewelry-kind-of-guy, my finger remained bare until I met my wife. Pledging our lives to each other, we exchanged simple

Golden Silver Anniversary O

by Diane DeVaughn Stokes

ur silver anniversary was GOLDEN! No doubt about it! We had saved up for this big celebration for two years and had talked about it and planned it for the ten years prior. Yes, the blue and aqua seas coupled with the over-the-water bungalows were calling our names. I’m sure all of you who have seen photos of Bora Bora and Moorea have drooled like we did for this magical adventure. We were fortunate to be able to make it happen. Flying over Tahiti was breathtaking. Looking down on a mottled mix of blue and green hues reminded me of a painting by Paul Gauguin. We were sandwiched between the ultramarine sky, the cotton candy clouds and watercolor masterpiece below. It was what I imagined heaven to look like. I didn’t care if the plane ever landed. That was the most extraordinary view I have ever seen. As we flew over Moorea, which Condé Nast lists as the third most beautiful island in all the world, the jagged volcanic mountains resembled those drippy sand castles we used to make when we visited the beach as kids, except much larger and greener. Each structure varied in size and shape overlooking the sandy beaches, pressed against, and melting into the turquoise body of water. If you have read James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific which is all about French Polynesia, you would know that this is an incredibly picturesque island and only ten miles from Tahiti. And for those who are into theater like me, you know this is Bali Hai as described in the Broadway show South Pacific.

Most of the service staff spoke English, but the islanders spoke French and Tahitian. Therefore we loved visiting the local restaurants where everyone had their own take on the local dish known as poisson cru. It mimics ceviche as it consists of raw fish marinated in lime juice and coconut milk that will melt in your mouth almost instantly. I don’t even like sushi, but I loved this concoction. As for their freshwater shrimp, which they call chevreffes, it seemed to monopolize every menu: Chevreffes in cream sauce, fried chevreffes, blackened chevreffes mounded on top of steak. You get the picture! Our bungalow here was not over the water as we chose to save that experience (and dollars) for Bora Bora, but we had our own enclosed garden pool. As for the scuba diving, it was a totally different experience than the Caribbean underwater life. One day as we were returning from a dive, the boat captain said there was a humpback whale with her calf in the water just ahead. He suggested that we jump in and gently snorkel over close to them, but not to frighten them. When I look back on this, it’s hard to believe we did it, because if I even stopped for a moment to think about it, I would have not attempted such a thing as the mother might have tried to kill us thinking we were going to harm her baby! But she did not bother us thank goodness and seemed proud to show off her offspring. Once we were right next to them, we realized how huge she was, as her infant twirled around like a circus performer. What a once in a lifetime thrill.

28

Four days later we flew to Bora Bora and the over-water thatched hut was simply adorable. Fish swam beneath our feet as we looked out over Mt. Otemanu, a dormant volcano. We even had our own mini-dock and pier so that we could open the door to the hut and jump into the aquamarine water. The sunsets were unmatched to anywhere we have ever been, and the diving was spectacular, but not because of the coral, as the Caribbean is much better in that regard. The diving was a “wow” due to the many Manta Rays that paraded over us, and the multiple sharks that seemed to sniff us out knowing we were newcomers to their environs. Of course we were told by the dive master not to fear the sharks as no one had been attacked there in over a hundred years, but I was still scared stiff! Talk about an adrenalin rush! Food was much the same as Moorea, but Bloody Mary’s Bar and Yacht Club was surely the liveliest and most famous hangout, though very expensive. It was somewhat of a let-down compared to the build-up on its website. But the island and the Motus were each serene, and archeologically different than anyplace we have ever been. Bora Bora was even more extraordinary than we had dreamed and the brochures and web photos could not compare to the glorious reality of being there amidst the colorful splendor. And so, our twenty-fifth anniversary celebration was surely the best yet. This year it’s our thirty-fifth, and we are headed to Martha’s Vineyard. There is no doubt in my mind we could never replicate the magical spirit of Bora Bora and Moorea. Who knows, maybe for our fiftieth we will return to Bali Hai. As the song lyrics say, “Bali Hai may call you, any night, any day. In your heart you’ll hear it call you. Come away, come away.”

“We were sandwiched between the ultramarine sky, the cotton candy clouds and watercolor masterpiece below. It was what I imagined heaven to look like.”

The Wedding Guest Who Flew in Unexpectedly... Wildlife and a Wedding by Maggie Boineau • Photos Provided by: Carmen Ash Photography

T

he day had finally arrived and after months of planning for our daughter Caroline’s wedding, we were ready to take a deep breath and live every moment to its fullest! But when you plan an outdoor wedding, anything can happen – especially when the venue is a botanical garden, the largest outdoor figurative sculpture collection in the country, not to mention a wildlife preserve! We chose Brookgreen Gardens, not only for its natural beauty, but also because this timeless Southern plantation is where Anna and Archer Huntington, the founders, opened the doors in 1932 to display Anna’s and her sister Harriet Randolph Hyatt Mayor’s amazing sculptures. With nearly 10,000 acres of pristine natural and cultivated landscape, as well a haven for native Lowcountry animals, it is truly a gift for all who visit.

The ceremony location could not have been more desirable, with ancient oak trees draped with Spanish moss arching over the setting, forming a perfect canopy of leaves, which provided much welcome shade. This sultry, almost-summer afternoon on June 2nd would indeed be a warm one. The wooden chairs

placed in perfect rows blended in with the native landscape, and the backdrop where the bride and groom would marry was nothing less than magical. A pair of ornamental wrought iron and bronze gates (ca. 1909) anchored by stately walls, topped with a pair of Great Danes, guarded a pristine lake where one of the oldest sculptures, Youth Taming the Wild, proudly stood in the center of the island. While soft music provided by the string duet played, our special guests took their seats and delighted in the occasional warm breezes and beautiful scent of the flowering magnolia trees and sweet Camellia blooms. The excitement was building when it was my turn to be seated, as we knew the bridal party was about to make their way down the aisle to the waiting groom and his groomsman. The maid of honor, Caroline’s sister, Alexandra, and the bridesmaids, dressed in beautiful soft pastel flowing gowns, and our darling flower girls with perfect white dresses and crowns of flowers brought smiles to all, as they set the stage

for the much-anticipated bride to walk down the aisle with her proud – and emotional – daddy. And then it happened. All I can remember was a huge shadow overhead and the thumping sound of beating wings as a large bird flew overhead. A spectacular red-tailed hawk made a low swoop under the canopy and over the guests, and then down the aisle as if he had wanted to make his entrance known, being a little more than fashionably late for the wedding. The gasps and whispers from the guests were quieted only when the heart-tugging wedding music began (Canon in D by Pachelbel) and the signal from the minister let us know that it was time to stand. The wedding ceremony filled our hearts with happiness as the beautiful bride and handsome groom made their vows before God’s amazing creation. After the traditional wedding photos were taken and we could finally mingle with our guests, I was excited with all the great sentiment about the special guest, our red-tailed hawk! Just weeks ago, one of our guests lost her husband unexpectedly, and she was very certain it was her beloved sending her a message that all was good with him. She glowed as she spoke and I, too, had the immediate thought that my parents, who had passed during the last decade, were sending the same message that though they were gone, they still had a presence in my life. I knew right then that this would be a wedding to remember. A lot has been written about hawk symbolism. The hawk is revered for its greatest gift, its keen vision, and circling high above, hawks can see everything, giving them a larger perspective. The spirit of the hawk teaches us to take a close look around, and see the bigger picture. It is so easy to get lost in the small details that life throws at us every day and to forget the larger picture of what life is all about. This amazing

spirit animal can teach us to see things that others miss. Hawks are also sometimes spiritual messengers and let us know that we are destined to soar higher and take on a leadership role. Without a doubt, this was a beautiful sentiment to this young couple beginning their lifelong journey as one and to everyone who was present. No one knows for certain what message the silent flight of the hawk meant, but I do know that it was a spiritual blessing for all to receive. This lovely gift brought us all in tune with nature, and being a conservationist and a hunter, I was very happy and thankful for this wonderful but unplanned guest to take part in our celebration.

As this beautiful day drew to an end under the peaceful skies, we were so happy that even with all the details that needed to be taken care of in order to make this very special event happen, we did not get so lost in the planning that we lost the true meaning of the day. We are sure that the bigger picture is the pairing of a wonderful couple, Caroline and Austin Thomas, and the love they have for each other!

Plan for a Beautiful Day: Wedding Makeup by Madeline Cooper

W

e always recommend brides come in our studio for a trial run of makeup before their big day. During this time, the bride-to- be will have the opportunity to try everything from foundation, eye shadow styles, and lipstick colors. The beauty of having a trial run is you have the chance to try different colors and see your full glam look ahead of time. For example, if you thought you may like bright red lipstick, but it turns out you don’t, we will switch to a berry shade and find the perfect color ahead of time for your big day. We have the ability to tweak anything you’re not sure about ensuring the pictureperfect look you are seeking. It is important to us that our brides spend their entire wedding day enjoying moments with their bridal party, friends, and family, while receiving their glam verses having to make decisions on the spot. At Merle Norman, we offer our brides a FREE complimentary trial run of wedding day makeup after signing a wedding makeover contract and locking down your wedding date with us. For your wedding day, we offer two options for booking. We offer on location makeovers, which includes your entire bridal party – bridesmaids and mother of the bride and groom. This is the most popular and convenient option for our brides as they are able to stay at their venue and enjoy brunch and time with their bridesmaids while our staff comes complete with everything needed for the full glam look. We also offer a wedding party instudio makeover option as well. This is used for brides who may have a full outdoor venue and would like the in-studio experience. Let us help you claim your beauty on your wedding day! For example, we know that when selecting a makeup look for your big day, it is extremely important that we select a foundation that is sure to last all day long. As an example, our lasting foundation

32

offers a sweat-proof and waterproof option for our bridal parties. With this option, you won’t have to worry about sweating it off or having unwanted smears if you shed a few tears. It is also a MUST to use waterproof mascara for this reason as well. I personally always recommend and remind brides that on their special day, a more dramatic look will stand out best in wedding photos. It is important to remember this is a once in a lifetime event and having a look that appears a little more dramatic than the usual day-to-day makeup routine is encouraged. False lashes are also a popular option for many brides to help enhance the look of the eyes. We offer several different lash options ranging from natural lengthening lashes to more dramatic thickening and lengthening choices. Choosing a focal point whether it is a bright, bold lip color, or a dramatic smokey-eye helps ensure wedding photos truly showcase your face. While you can choose to do both, most people select one or the other to accentuate their wedding day look. Contouring the face with bronzer and highlighter is a great way to sculpt and define your facial features for your big day! While it may be more makeup than most women typically wear daily, these added touches will give your skin a glow, while showcasing and accentuating your favorite facial features. Call us today to discuss how we can help you claim your beauty on your special wedding day! Wise Words for Younger Me by Diane Stark

W

hen I was a brand new, 23-year-old teacher, I envied the 30-something teachers. They’d taught for a while, and they knew what worked and what didn’t. I was fumbling through my first year of teaching, putting in a lot of time, but still making a lot of mistakes. The more experienced teachers were able to recycle their lessons plans from previous years, so they were doing a better job than I was in half the time. I watched them leave the school each afternoon, while I stayed late, working hard to be a good teacher. They were so comfortable in their role, while I felt awkward and insecure. I was also envious of their paychecks. Each year they’d taught, they’d gotten a small raise, while I was still at the beginning teachers’ salary. They owned their own homes, while I still lived in an apartment. They were only a few years older than I was, but those years brought a level of confidence and security I desperately wanted. Soon I was that confident, experienced teacher. I’d stopped staying at school until dinner time. I didn’t need to – I knew what I was doing now. My paychecks were slightly larger, and I owned my own home. I should have been happy. I’d become the person I used to envy. But now I found myself looking at the first-year teachers and being jealous of their energy and enthusiasm. They stayed late every night. They cared so much about getting better at their jobs. More than a decade ago, I left the classroom to become a stay-at-

home mom. It was a dream come true. For my entire teaching career, I’d cherished my summers at home with my kids and wished I could be a year-round, full-time mom. I’d missed them so much when I was working. Resigning had been such a relief. But that first day of school the following year had been bittersweet. Teaching is such an important job, and now, I was just a mom. It took me a few weeks to figure out that being a mom is important too. When my house was full of little kids, everything was an adventure. Going out to eat with babies and toddlers was always a gamble. We would sit at the table, working hard to keep the kids entertained. We’d pray our food would arrive before any tantrums did. Just going out for dinner was a lot of work. I can remember looking at the families at the other tables. The couples with older children seemed so much more relaxed than we did. Their children sat quietly, playing on tablets while their parents enjoyed a peaceful conversation. I remember thinking how much easier parenting would be when my kids got a little older. These days, my older kids are teenagers and young adults, and my youngest child is ten years old. Going out to eat is no longer an adventure. And I’m shocked by how much I miss it. As my kids have gotten older, I’ve come to hate their birthdays. Don’t get me wrong. I still love buying them gifts and celebrating them on their special day. It’s just sad that they are another year older. On my youngest son’s last birthday, after the presents were

opened and the cake was eaten, I thought, “All of my kids are in the double digits now.” It made me cry. Having big kids was something I’d always wished for, and now that I have it, I just want to go back and have littles again.

I shook my head. “Not really.” Her son toddled by, stepping on my feet again. He stopped and grinned at me, then drove his Matchbox car up my leg. “Tyler, don’t bother her.” She rose to grab him, but I motioned her away.

When they were little, my kids needed me constantly. It was exhausting at times. Now that they’re older, I find myself wishing they needed me more than they do.

“Why don’t you grab a magazine? I’ll play with Tyler for a while.”

It seems I’ve spent my whole life wishing I could fast-forward or rewind time. I’m always wishing for a different stage of life than the one I’m currently in. When my kids were younger, I longed for more freedom and time to myself. Now that I have it, I miss the bedtime stories and little kid snuggles.

“The funny thing is, it’s a break for me too,” I said.

A few weeks ago, ten-year-old Nathan and I were sitting in the waiting room at the Toyota dealership, killing time while my car was being repaired. I read a book while Nathan sat next to me, playing a game on my phone. My book was interesting, but I couldn’t concentrate because a toddler was circling the room, his mom following behind him.

“Me too,” I answered.

“I’m sorry,” she said when her son walked by, stepping on my feet.

One day, my peaceful, quiet life will be turned upside down in the most wonderful way possible.

I smiled at her. “It’s no problem. He’s adorable.” “He’s a lot of work. I wish he was older so I could sit and read a book like you are.”

She grinned. “A break would be wonderful.”

For the next half-hour, I entertained little Tyler while his mom read a magazine. When they announced that her car was finished, she thanked me for watching him. “I feel so refreshed,” she said.

I still haven’t learned to be completely content with my current stage of life, but I have found that every stage has wonderful things to offer. I only wish I’d discovered this sooner. The younger me would have been a happier person.

Grandbabies! But for now, I’ll just enjoy life right where I am.

“When my kids were his age, I used to wish that too.” I sighed. “Now I wish they were little again.” She smiled. “Well, you know what they say about the grass being greener somewhere else.” “I do. I think I’ve spent my whole life looking for that greener grass.”

Gold Map

by Rose Ann Sinay

W

hen we got married my husband slipped a gold ring on my finger. Our names were inscribed inside, conveniently, in case I should ever forget. It was the most emotional, important and identifiable piece of jewelry that I’d ever received. There were other precious trinkets to mark the highlights in my life, but they didn’t appear exactly as I imagined. Our first Christmas together, my husband bought me a gift that he put under the tree a week early. When he wasn’t around I picked the box up, shook it, un-taped it, re-taped it (too Polly-Anna to take a peek) and guessed at what was inside. I’d hoped for something silver or gold, but this package was way too big . . . unless, he’d put it inside a jewelry chest. I’d earmarked a page in a catalog, but didn’t think he’d paid any attention. Oh, he was clever! Christmas morning I reached for that present first, tearing off the wrappings, anxious to see just how creative he had been. I held the open box in front of me. It was an iron–a steam iron. When he saw the raw disappointment on my face, he pointed to the aqua push button that could spray just the right amount of mist to power those wrinkles right out of his shirts – or my blouses. At that moment, I wanted to mist him right out of the room. My happy balloon began to leak. On our tenth anniversary, he gave me a gold “iron” charm. Told you he was clever. It only took ten years. And then, there was the diamond pendant he gave me to mark the birth of our son. Years later, it was stolen by the “pillowcase bandits” who had been casing the neighborhood and hit our house as soon as we left for vacation. It was an emotional loss, but I realized I had my real live gift looking me in the face every day, filling my life with love, laughter (and angst). Over the years, I have built up quite a collection of gold and

silver mementos. Chains with a swinging “MOM” hanging from it, “MOM” with a pink rose attached to the first M, and another pendant with a rose perched on the last M. MOM in script; MOM in block letters. I loved my name and the excitement that, I’m sure, went into buying it for me. To be fair, my husband became very good at finding meaningful gifts. Resting my hand over a pendant on my chest or admiring the sparkle in a gemstone ring he’d chosen for me always brought my thoughts back to him. Just when I thought all my jewelry -worthy moments were spent, I found one more from an unexpected source. I’ve been a voracious reader ever since I discovered all the fun I could have with Dick and Jane (Sally, Spot and Puff). Some of my favorite gifts have been first editions of my favorite authors’ works. I used the necklaces from the kids as bookmarks in those special books. After our nest emptied, I had more time to indulge in thick novels that I could read whenever I wanted. It was like living in a candy factory. But the more I read, the more critical I became. I could write better than this, I had thought. With eyes much bigger than talent, I started with the biggie: THE BOOK. Of course it was pure garbage, but a great eye opener. Writing was hard work. Maybe, I couldn’t actually pen a bestseller (or any seller for that matter). Frustrated with the enormity of my challenge, I resorted to writing quick short stories: a beginning, middle and an ending – all in under one thousand words. I submitted articles to local papers and online publications. I never got feedback, but my work continued to be published with my byline as compensation. When we retired to North Carolina, I dared to submit to paying publications. I piled the rejections in an envelope. Finally, I received

an acceptance, and soon after, a check followed in the mail.

“Fall wears arriving daily”

I had been paid for writing an essay about my family and being a MOM! I stared at the piece of paper in my hand, taking pure pleasure in the moment. My first thought was to frame it and hang it next to my computer where I could take solace when I labored over the words for my book. It was a balloon moment and it wasn’t going to deflate. This was huge – right there under love, marriage and babies. It was my accomplishment. I made a copy of that check and placed it in the magazine with my article. I put on my shoes and got in the car. I needed to mark this date. I’d never purchased fine jewelry for myself before. My necklaces, bracelets and earrings were gifts from the people I loved. They were placeholders – a road map – of celebrations with my family that I didn’t want to let slip away. This was one of those reminders with a gift to me from me. I scanned displays in shop after shop until I found them: silver and gold hammered by hand and shaped into earrings by an artist. They were earthy, imperfect and interesting. I slid the smooth hooks into the holes in my ear lobes. They felt as much a part of my timeline as the gold iron charm and the multitude of “MOM” necklaces. I like the person I see in the mirror with the magnificent earrings. This is the spot on the map where I discovered another piece of me. My new jewelry could represent my exclamation point, a period, or maybe, a simple comma – with more to come. I hope (someday) my daughter and granddaughters will wear these earrings on their own roadmaps to finding themselves and their own inner goldmines. All because an editor took the time to read my story and liked it. Thanks, Leslie and Sasee Magazine.

A Conversation with Author Cassandra King by Leslie Moore

own to earth and positively delightful, Cassandra King is not only a best-selling Southern writer, but a really fun person to talk to. She chatted with me from Highlands, North Carolina, where she travels to write and enjoy the cooler mountain weather.

after he died I really needed to go back to writing, but I didn’t want to go back to the book I was working on.” At the same time, Cassandra had been working on a cookbook; one much like Pat’s Recipes of My Life, which includes a lot of personal stories, almost like a memoir cookbook. “But, in cookbooks you wouldn’t want to talk about him getting sick and the troubles we had, so my editor wanted me to make it a straight memoir.”

“I’m an ant,” Cassandra told me as we began talking about our mutual love of thrift stores. In her highly anticipated memoir, Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy, Cassandra shares stories of life with her famous husband. “I really want people to see Pat as the man “When Pat and I were married, we realized we I loved, not just as an icon of Southern had married out of our species,” Cassandra literature. He wrote so many dark books, but began, laughing as she remembered. “Pat’s he was a great guy – generous, sweet, kind, brother’s theory is that everyone is either and complicated, of course,” Cassandra an ant or a grasshopper, sort of like Aesop’s paused for a moment, remembering her PHOTO CREDIT: JOHN WOLLWERTH tale of the tortoise and the hare. You’re either beloved husband, and continued, telling me thrifty and industrious like an ant, or rather extravagant, jumping about the book she’s working on now. “I went back to the book I around like a grasshopper.” She continued, saying, “One night Pat was writing when Pat died. He called it my ‘farm book.’ One of the and I went to the beach, soon after we were married; we lived on subplots is the disappearance of the southern landscape.” Fripp Island at the time. After we left, I realized I had forgotten a beach towel and asked him to turn around. It was an expensive When I asked Cassandra if she ever thought of retiring, her towel and belonged to Pat. He said, ‘I’m not turning around now, infectious laughter was all the answer I needed. “I’ll never stop it’s dark. We’ll just get it tomorrow,’ and then went on to say he writing.” knew I was an ant when I bragged about getting my clothes from a thrift store.” Meet Cassandra at the “It was a joke with us all through our marriage,” Cassandra continued. “After we bought our home in Beaufort, Pat asked me to please stop telling everyone that I got all of our furniture in a consignment store.” Cassandra laughed again and said she told him she did not get the furniture at a consignment store, it was a Habitat store. “You would not believe what those people in Hilton Head throw away!” Possessing a true artist’s soul, Pat had no concept of money. “Practical things didn’t matter to him. His brother tells the story that Pat would go to buy a car and ask how much it was. The salesperson would tell him $20,000, and Pat would offer him $25,000.”
