Almost fifteen years ago, I interviewed with the owner and publisher of Sasee for the job as editor. I clearly remember that one of the “tests” she gave me was to write a sample “Letter from the Editor.” I struggled with that first letter, but to my great delight, I was chosen for the position and felt I had found my perfect place. Each month since December of 2005, I’ve shared my thoughts with all of you here. None of them was as hard to write as that first letter – until now, as I write what will be my last Sasee “Letter from the Editor.” While I am very excited to start on a new adventure, it is with great sadness that I leave you, my family of readers and writers – along with the hundreds of people who have allowed me to share their story through interviews. Many times through the years, I have sat in front of my computer and cried while reading an essay – and just as many times, I’ve laughed out loud at a writer’s hilarious story. When readers would stop me in the grocery store or post office, sharing how a certain essay or interview touched their heart, I was always humbled by the impact of this publication. Sasee is very special to me, and I know it is for many of you as well. So much time and energy is put into making every issue even better than the last – and rest assured, none of that will change with my departure. Sasee has a caring, dedicated team that will make sure you have only the very best each month. To all the Sasee writers, thank you from the bottom of my heart. We have become friends through the years, and I will miss our monthly emails. And to our readers I give the greatest thanks – without you, Sasee would not exist. One person I do want to mention – Nicole McManus, who has shared so many wonderful book reviews, is also leaving Sasee this month to start her own new adventure. Every Friday, my old college roommate sends me a letter. Now it’s an email. We’ve kept this correspondence for 45 plus years. Over the decades, we’ve discussed many topics. In recent years, the top ten always include appliances on the blink or not being able to access internet, or computer problems in general. Today I responded to her: “I hear ya, Sister! And I can diagnose your problem. It’s the same as mine. We’re old! Officially old f-rts, and technology is going too fast!” I still recall the look on my elderly dad’s face when I could turn on the TV for him, and he’d say: “You’re a genius, Erika.” Prior to that, he was up at the screen peering around looking for knobs. Sad, huh? – I’ll be there soon! My go-to guy is my third son: Partly because he seems to understand computers the best, and partly because he has more patience than my other kids. My daughter shows some kindness with me, but she’s not as much a computer guru as he. This son is understanding although I know he thinks I rival Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber. He seems more tolerant of his dad’s questions and ineptitude than my queries and confusion but still… he does have patience. Maybe that’s why he’s a doctor. One needs patience to have patients! My pal Cora wrote me about her troubles with Wi-Fi, the dishwasher that wouldn’t empty, and the coffee machine. I commiserated and launched into my own sad saga about air conditioning compressors and condensers. Any of you living in the Carolinas during July 2020 while we were confined to our homes, sheltering in place, should empathize with the plight of having AC snafus. My AC debacle started around the 11th. It was a Saturday, when Will, who took over the business from Curt when Curt died, answered our call. Our main floor’s unit didn’t work well. It cooled but not sufficiently in the 100-degree heat spell. The house couldn’t get below 78. Mine is a big house. Luckily, the component for our master bedroom worked. And the other upstairs unit for the other bedrooms worked. So, we could sleep at night even if the downstairs was a sauna.
kind of worried me. Three days later we had no AC in our master bedroom, which had been working fine. So, Jimmy returned alone on the 17th and told me it was Joel who had worked on that unit, but he’d look into it. Jimmy was up in the attic moving things around and said he put a slant on the pipe, and so the pan shouldn’t fill up with water causing the thing to automatically turn off. Yet, Sunday, again, we had no AC in our master bedroom. On Monday, the 20th, both Jimmy and Joel returned and went to the attic, and Jimmy said he tried to straighten out a bubble in the pipe and hoped it would now work. My parting words were: “You think I’ll see you again in two days?” And he said, “I hope not.” Two days later, same problem. Hubby cleared the space in the basement because he thought they’d need to check all the pipes coming down. On the 23rd, Joel and someone new, named Jay, arrived. I called Will and said I’d like him out here too because I felt he had the experience to figure out what was wrong. So, Will told me he had a lot of “crap” to deal with, but he’d come. He came, along with a kid who looked 17, a redhead, his sonDavey. Will traipsed to the basement with his son. He told me he wasn’t sure he could fix the problem without tearing through walls. And I told him my husband wondered if when Jimmy and Joel blew out the pipes, they could have caused some debris to get clogged in a joint. Will thought not. It was all just a coincidence, he said, but he went to the van to see if they had some sort of machine. All four returned to the heat stroke-inducing attic. I kept my distance and never joined them because it was too hot up there for them to wear masks. It must have been 130! Anyway, I heard clanging and a boom.
Will came promptly, fixed the main floor’s unit, and my husband paid him on the spot. Then, my husband added he’d like him to check out the other units. Because Will didn’t have time that day, he’d return next week.
Will found me in my study and told me to come out into the foyer, and he looked up at a huge hole. He said his foot went through some plywood, and the contractor hadn’t done a good job when they built this house, and it could have happened to us. I didn’t say that we’ve been living here for 19 years, and it never happened to us, and my husband catches squirrels up there. Each day, he checks the trap.
On Wednesday, Will sent Jimmy, and a guy named Joel I’d not met before. They looked at the other two units adding Freon, etc.; the bill was 300 something dollars, which I paid. Jimmy was talkative. The other one, Joel, grinned a lot, which
Will said he has someone to do sheetrock repair, and he’ll take care of it. (I guess the bill.) Will said he thought he had the AC working now. I noticed all his helpers: Joel, Jay, and his son had slipped out the back door. Quietly.

Well, Burt called last night, a very chatty jovial guy, who told me he fixes messes HVAC folks and plumbers and electricians make. He knew about Will’s son stepping through the ceiling. I said, “Will told me he did it.” Burt corrected himself, “Oh yeah, maybe it was Will.” I told my husband the story; he said, “Makes sense it was the kid.” SO…now that the AC’s working, you know what keeps me up? Squirrels! What if they jump down from my hole in the foyer ceiling? It’ll be two weeks before Burt can get out here. And then after my hard day of home improvements and home destruction, I ate three hefty scoops of Double Magnum Sea Salt Caramel ice cream, my new cure-all, while hiding out from Covid-19.

Later that night, when the wind was blowing dead trees back and forth, just before I knocked off to sleep, I thought: “OH NO! A tree’s gonna come crashing through our roof, filled with rabid squirrels?” And immediately my next thought was: “Maybe, tomorrow, if I don’t succumb to a dead tree or virus-ridden rodents, I’ll write up my home improvement saga. Of course, I’ll have to change the names to protect the… GUILTY!”

Transforming Design Inspiration Into Reality by Julie Schettig, Designer Designing this space, with one of our favorite clients, was sheer JOY! Our client has the utmost color confidence and wanted an elegant, refined room to convey that look. She desired a rainbow of colors but did not want her space to feel juvenile. We designed this formal living area to feature a variety of vibrant colors to achieve intensity and drama. A teal grasscloth wallpaper was selected for above the wainscoting for texture. In addition, we selected unique furniture for a well-traveled, eclectic feel. It was important to all of us that none of the pieces match, keeping the space dynamic and sophisticated. To give the room its colorful personality, we sourced an amazing rug and window treatment fabric that serve as the major showstoppers in the space. “You’ve already spent so much on my move to school,” my 18-year-old daughter, Julia, said. “You bought my bedding, my towels, and all of my storage stuff. I’m paying for these dorm decorations.” I nodded, but when we got to the check out, I just piled everything on the counter and paid for it. It took Julia a minute to realize what I was doing. She protested and tried to pay me back for her purchases, but I said, “Honey, don’t worry about it. This stuff will be so cute in your room. Besides, this will be our last shopping trip together for a while.” I felt the now-familiar lump in my throat as I said the words. I could hardly believe my baby girl was going away to college. In my head, I knew that I was overreacting. The college that Julia had chosen was only 30 minutes from our house. I would probably still see her on a weekly basis. I’d already planned to meet her for coffee, shopping trips, and pedicures. In my head, I knew this move wasn’t that big of a deal. But in my heart, I was grieving. I was used to seeing Julia every single day. Although we would still see one another often, our relationship was changing. And although things were going exactly the way they were supposed to, I was still sad at the changes. The next morning, we packed up two cars and drove to Julia’s dorm room. As my husband, Eric, lofted her bed, I unpacked her clothes and toiletries. I organized her bathroom and hung her shower curtain. As I made her bed, I felt the lump again. My baby wouldn’t be sleeping under my roof that night. Or any night in the near future. Julia’s roommate and her parents arrived, and we finished organizing the girls’ room. Then we all went out to dinner together. We had a great time, but I couldn’t really enjoy myself. These were my last few minutes with Julia. When we dropped her back off at her dorm, I hugged her tight and couldn’t hold back my tears. “I’m so proud of you, Honey,” I said. “I love you Momma,” she said, squeezing her eyes tight. I cried most of the way back to our house. That night, Julia texted me the sweetest good night message. The next night, she called to tell me about her day, and we talked for nearly two hours. “I think you two are talking more now than when she lived Sasee Home Guide 2020
at home,” Eric said. I shrugged. “It’s still not the same.” The next morning, I opened my laptop to answer some emails and found a Ziploc baggie with a few twenty dollar bills and three Post-it notes. Tears filled my eyes as I realized it was from Julia. “Mom, this money is to pay you back for the decorations you bought the other day,” the first Post-it note said. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. You’re the best mom in the world and I love you so much,” the second one said. But the third note was the one that really got me. “You are my best friend and you’ll always be my favorite person to talk to,” it said. Those three Post-it notes are so much more valuable to me than the money she included in the bag. They made me realize how blessed I am to have a daughter like Julia. She is incredibly kind, and she made me feel so loved from 30 miles away. We’ve always been close, but we grew even closer during the shutdown. Nearly every day, we sat and talked for hours. She has this way of making people loved and understood. Holding those Post-it notes in my hand reminded me how blessed I am to be her mom. Julia’s moving day was a hard day for me. I had to take my daughter to school and leave her there. I would no longer see her every day. When I returned home and went into her now-empty bedroom at our house, I thought my heart would break. When I saw my dogs searching the house for Julia and whining when they couldn’t find her, tears flooded my eyes. When something exciting happened and I had to text her to tell her about it, that always-present lump in my throat grew so much bigger. But in the days since moving day, I’ve realized that things have changed less than I thought they would. I haven’t seen Julia, but we have talked on the phone or texted every day. She still tells me everything that’s going on in her life. We’re still close. I’m still her favorite person to talk to. Moving day might have changed Julia’s address, but it didn’t change our relationship. And I’ll always feel blessed to be her mom. Diane Stark is a wife and mom of five. House of Dreams by Jeffery Cohen
My folks first and only house was not their dream house – that perfect castle on a hill that only exists in fairy tales, but was, instead, a house of dreams, created over the years. The house they bought was a cookie-cutter model almost identical to the thousands of homes that lined newly paved streets in suburb developments all across the country in 1954 – with one exception. This particular house was slightly different than any on the block. The second story that rose above a shingled front was faced with knotty pine; and a red flower box nestled under the front windows – both of which reminded Dad of a Swiss Chalet. He loved that knotty pine facade. It was probably the reason they chose that model. As the years passed and it became worn and weathered, my father cobbled together a ten-foot scaffold of two by fours and spent weeks meticulously sanding and varnishing it back to its original glory. My parents weren’t at all interested in having the interior of their house resemble anything like the sedate pastel look of the neighbors, so they decided to wallpaper with patterns of their dreams. My grandfather had emigrated from Russia at twelve-years-old and became a wallpaper hanger. His claim to fame was that he’d hung Chinese silk in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. My father, having had the secrets of the trade
passed on to him, wallpapered every room in the house. Having an artistic flair, he chose a red paper with gold print of exotic places like the Great Pyramids and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon for the living room. My mother, not to be outdone, bought lamps in the shape of pouncing panthers accompanied by black planters in which she grew ivy that gave the appearance of a surrounding jungle. The lamps were topped with square, scarlet lampshades to match the paper. The furniture that they settled on had the straight, flat lines of the “modern” look of the fifties, but my mom, needing just a bit of pizzazz, picked a sectional set that had shimmering strands of colored cellophane woven into the turquoise and wheat fabric. Dazzling to the eye, but not exactly comfortable. During the day, as my mother stared out into a still barren backyard, she began to envision a sun porch, so my father started scrounging around, collecting scrap lumber in a pile. When that pile grew tall enough, he started construction. In a month’s time, he’d built a back porch that was larger than our living room, but he wasn’t satisfied. That’s when he began his daily routine of carting home trunks full of rocks the size of my hand. Like a seasoned mason, he cemented them in place, giving his porch a face of stone. When he finished, a huge pile of rock still remained. Not one to waste, Dad began constructing an outdoor backyard fireplace. As he slapped mortar around stone, he shared his dream of this grand barbecue pit that would one day support a pizza oven on one side, and a rotisserie on the other. I don’t recall if he ran out of stone or ambition, but he never did get beyond that main fireplace. It was good enough to burn fires on summer nights as the family sat around its glow, singing old favorites and toasting marshmallows. There were other dreams that remained just that. Dad had envisioned transforming the unfinished attic in to a recreation room, equipped with a pool table, a ping pong table, a wet bar, and a TV, but like so many dreams, they don’t disappear, they just fade with the years. As my parents approached their sixties, my Dad wallpapered the living room one more time. Still red, but this time it was fuzzy flock paper. He felt it had the elegance of a castle. I saw it more as a New Orleans bordello. To complete the royal decor, my mother chose throne-like velvet furniture with white and gold carved wood that made me think of King Arthur’s court, promising that this set would last the rest of her life. She died just a few years later, my father to follow by seven years.

My brothers and I decided to sell the house we’d all grown up in. I have to admit, it wasn’t easy for me to leave all of the memories behind, but after two years, I had decided it was the right thing to do, and the house of dreams passed on to new owners. I would occasionally pass by the place to see if anything had changed; different windows, a new roof, or a paint job. Then one day, I spotted a “For Sale” sign on the lawn and made an appointment to see the old homestead, just for curiosity’s sake. The first thing I noticed as I approached was the knotty pine that my Dad took so much pride in. It was now buried under a thick layer of paint. As I walked inside, I was shocked. Walls had been knocked down, a once-hidden staircase stood in plain sight. The unfinished attic had been transformed into a maze of odd shaped rooms. I felt lost, barely recognizing anything familiar in the house where I’d spent my entire young life. I left in a daze.

From the private Members Club on the Atlantic Ocean to beautiful, planned developments on the Intracoastal Waterway, Grande Dunes is the complete package. Sasee asked Genie and Steve Leonard and Doug and Maureen Ralph to share a little about what life is like in this idyllic resort community.
My Winding Path to Life in Grande Dunes, by Genie Leonard I was born in Mobile, Alabama to a Methodist minister who served large downtown churches in Mobile, Montgomery, and Charlotte. My father’s church, Dexter Avenue Methodist, in Montgomery, was diagonal to Martin Luther King’s old church. We lived there in the ‘60s, a time of great unrest in the country. My father became a leader in the civil rights movement among the clergy in the Alabama/West Florida Conference. His courage and integrity to stand up for human and civil rights was truly amazing, resulting in our lives being threatened. The legacy he and my mom left us has been a driving force in my life ever since. Both of my parents had beautiful trained voices and both played the piano. I clearly remember Dad playing “Rhapsody in Blue” while Mom was making dinner. They were both well educated and well traveled, and their love of music, art and literature led them to raise me and my brother and sister in a “Renaissance” tradition. We were all exposed to art, literature, music and dance. If Dad had a meeting at night, one of us would go with Mom to the opera or ballet or symphony, establishing an early love and appreciation for the arts. This exposure was meant to enhance our lives, not to encourage us to pursue careers in these fields. For me, fortunately or unfortunately, I really took to it and ended up pursuing a career in music and drama. I graduated from CSUN in Louisiana, with a BA in voice (opera). I parlayed that into musical theater, concerts, film, TV, national commercials and print. I am a member of SAG/AFTRA and 58 :: Sasee.com :: October 2020
I met my husband, Steve, in Winston-Salem, after I moved there from New York City. My first husband, also an actor and agent, died very suddenly when our son was a year old. I stayed in the city for a while, but found it increasingly hard to single parent there. The cost for a full time house keeper, plus rent, plus not being able to spend the time I wanted with my little son led me to make the move to North Carolina, closer to my mom and very close to my older sister. That way, when I was doing a show or on location, Aunt Anne could take care of my son, Jordan. I met Steve through our son’s soccer team. He has two boys that are close to my son’s age. Ultimately, we ended up blending our families and will celebrate 23 years of marriage on April 6th next year.
We found Grande Dunes by fluke. We vacationed in Myrtle Beach for several years with three other couples. The guys were Steve’s fraternity brothers, and they played golf during our trips, but the women did not. Since I love the game, Steve always found a way to get me down to Myrtle Beach a few days early to play some golf. On one of these trips, we played the Member’s Course and the Resort Course in Grande Dunes. I loved the layout of the courses and the Mediterranean vibe of the houses. Prior to this, when I thought about Myrtle Beach, I thought about beach stores, the beaches in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach, and all you can eat overly fried seafood! When we started thinking about retirement, we knew we wanted to be near good golf, have pretty consistent weather, have access to the ocean and live in a great community. We looked at Charleston, Charlotte, and Wilmington, but kept coming back to Grande Dunes: great golf, access to the Ocean Club, a gorgeous gated community and more. We revisited Grand Dunes, and went in a model house on Serena Drive. We loved it, and I wrote a first refusal check. We ended up taking an early retirement, and sold our historic home in Washington DC where Steve was the COO at Zuckerman Spaeder, a boutique law firm that specialized in white collar crime. I moved here in September 2017 and Steve followed the next year. When I first got here, I jumped into everything. I went to all of the parties at the Member’s Club, played golf with the women on ladies days, joined First United Methodist Church, and more. By the time Steve got here, I had a group of buddies including church friends, golf friends, and social friends. He jumped in by getting elected to the Golf Village Board. I love that Grande Dunes has literally something for everyone. There is a travel club, book club, gym, tennis,

35 Years of Caring and Serving golf, bridge group, and trivia night, just to name a few. I also like that many people in Grande Dunes are involved in giving back to the community. There are a lot of privileged people here, and I think that it’s important to help those less fortunate. A lot of poverty exists in our area, and it is easy to become very insulated if you don’t have an opportunity to stay connected. Steve and I both like that everyone is basically a transplant. The people at Grande Dunes bring with them a wealth of different backgrounds, experiences, and careers. You might say that we got here in the same boat. (Sorry, bad pun!) All this being said, the most important thing we all should remember when moving anywhere, is that you will probably get back from a community what you put in. I always have high expectations, and I approach every new opportunity with that attitude. People are already set with friends, they aren’t being rude when they don’t respond, they are just comfortable. Therefore you have to get involved and put yourself in close proximity so that you have an opportunity to connect with people through shared interests. The one thing that every place I have lived has in common… ME. I make sure that every house and place we live in becomes “home.” That it is a place infused with warmth, good friends, humor, sense of humor, and flexibility... Grande Dunes!

Village, a neighborhood just over the beautiful arched bridge spanning the Intracoastal Waterway. “I play golf or tennis almost every day,” Doug told me. Maureen chimed in, laughing, and told me she does play golf, but not nearly as much as Doug! An athlete from an early age, Doug has enjoyed being able to play as much golf and tennis as he likes since moving to Grande Dunes. “We are two miles from the ocean, which we love. We have an active social life in the neighborhood, access to good restaurants and entertainment, a good airport, an ideal climate, great medical care and, most importantly, a place our kids and grandkids enjoy visiting.” The Ralphs have three children and five grandchildren. Their oldest daughter lives in Washington DC with her military husband, their only son lived in Denver, Colorado, but much to the delight of his parents, recently moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Ralph and Maureen’s youngest daughter lives in Chicago, and teaches high school math, but is still able to visit often. “We would always like more visits, but they do come frequently,” Doug said. “The kids love to swim in the pool.” “There really is no other neighborhood in the area with private beach access,” Maureen began. “And we love sampling the local restaurants.” Doug chimed in with his favorite, Scatories, a locally owned Italian restaurant.
Golf, Tennis, but Most of All, Family: Doug and Maureen Ralph Eight year residents of Grande Dunes, Doug and Maureen both grew up in the Northeast – and by the time they reached high school, both lived in the small town of Ellenville, New York. “This was a small community,” Doug remembered. “There was a single school building with the high school on one side and kindergarten on the other. Maureen’s dad was principal of the high school and my father was athletic director.” The two met, and a high school romance soon became a life-long love. “We went to separate colleges, but after college we were married, and I took a job with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio, where we lived for 21 years, except for five years in Europe, where we lived in Germany and Sweden.” After leaving Procter & Gamble, Doug and Maureen moved to Philadelphia, where he served as CFO of two different public companies before retiring at 52. Then the couple started looking for their dream retirement home. “We vacationed in Myrtle Beach with family for years,” Doug told me when I asked what brought him to the Grand Strand area. “We drew up a short list of places to check out and Maureen visited Myrtle Beach with a friend while I was working.” Grande Dunes had everything Doug and Maureen were looking for and the couple built their home in Golf 60 :: Sasee.com :: October 2020
“I think because we vacationed here we have happy memories and associate those happy times with the area. And our kids love to visit and know the area.” Maureen continued, thoughtfully, “It makes it home. The people here are mostly retired, and very friendly. We met people right away. Everyone is from somewhere else. It’s sort of like college; you meet people who are in the same boat.” “Maureen refers to Myrtle Beach as her happy place,” Doug said as we finished our chat. “We travel quite a bit, and it is always a great feeling when we arrive back at the Myrtle Beach Airport, we are always happy to be back. We have a wonderful life filled with family, friends and things we enjoy doing.”

His marriage faced hardships, but the love between Lincoln and his wife is inspiring. Author, John Cribb does an excellent job depicting Lincoln’s life and final moments. History buffs and historical fiction fans will want to read this book.

Safer at Home by Melissa Face
It is true that home is a refuge, a safe space from the rest of the world. Never has that felt more true for my family than at the start of the pandemic. Early in lockdown, when the hashtag #saferathome appeared on PSAs and at the bottom of social media posts, we had already received that message. We knew we were safer at home, and we had no reason or desire to leave our nest. In those early days, groceries and medications were delivered to our front porch. We had all we needed, including an ample supply of toilet paper. At the beginning of lockdown, my two children climbed in bed with me each morning and snuggled as close to me as they could. “Is our house tired of us?” my daughter asked. “Like is it tired of our noise and jumping and us being here every day?” I told her our house was happy to have us safe inside and it missed us when we were at work and school. She responded with a smile and wrapped her arms tightly around me. In early spring, our home functioned as a school and workplace. We logged into ClassDojo, dialed into Zoom, and signed onto Google Classroom. We completed assignments and submitted them for feedback. And as a teacher, I assigned, corrected, and scored work for my students while monitoring my children’s virtual learning. It was challenging, but we got it done safely, at home.
grilled outside and ate on the patio. We swam in our aboveground pool and pretended we were riding the teacups at Disney World. I hoisted a child on each hip and spun around wildly as they laughed. “Keep your hands and arms inside the vehicle at all times until the ride comes to a full and complete stop,” I said. They screamed as water sprayed their faces and went up their noses. They uttered only one request: “Do it again, Mama!” In the evenings, our playroom functioned as a movie theatre. My son converted a cardboard box into a popcorn machine, and we ordered a sign to hang up that read, “Face Family Theatre - Now Starring Craig, Melissa, Evan, and Delaney.” We bought a box of used DVDs online, and we retreated to our private theatre when we were in the mood for a movie. In a really difficult and uncertain time, our home has functioned as a place to learn, work, and relax. Our home has been our shelter and whatever else we needed it to be. Today, we are packing our bags and leaving our home for the first time since the start of the pandemic. We are going up north for my brother-in-law’s birthday, and my kids are waving and saying goodbye to our house as we pull out of our driveway. As much as we all love to travel, we are worried about leaving our home and our sense of safety behind. “Goodbye, house!” my kids repeat. “We will miss you.”
Restrictions were lifted in late spring and people began traveling. Memorial Day beckoned beach goers and lured lake visitors. We stayed at home. We turned our dining room into a Hollywood dinner party. We dressed up like our favorite celebrities, enjoyed homemade food, and toasted our sparkling juice in fancy goblets. “Come stand over here by the wall and chat,” my daughter said to my son. “People do that at dinner parties. I’ve seen it on TV.” When school closures canceled my kids’ spring festivals and field days, we decided to host our own carnival at home. We ordered decorations, made welcome signs, and drew clown faces. We ordered cotton candy, made cupcakes, and bought peanuts. We handed out tickets, played games, and my mom awarded prizes. Prizes for what? Who won? We all did. Summer approached and more places began opening to the public. Restaurants allowed in-person dining and theme parks opened to visitors.
