RE: “I Go Back,” by Erika Hoffman
Your essay brought back memories of my father’s face as he picked up the accordion again! I finally understood the concept that if you want something badly enough, you do the work to get it done. Our parents taught us a lesson at the same time they were learning theirs! A well written essay of understanding. -Rose Ann
letter from the editor Like most of you, reading is, and always has been, one of my greatest joys. I can remember being 8 or 9 years old and getting so excited when the library would get a new Pippi Longstocking book – I’d take the book, climb my favorite tree and spend the afternoon in another world – the times I spent reading outside on a beautiful day are some of my happiest memories. The library was my favorite place to go, and fortunately I had parents who encouraged my love of reading, taking me to the library weekly and buying me special books on holidays. My childhood love of reading led to a fascination with the written word that has stayed with me throughout my life. Fast forward to today, and nothing much has changed. I still haunt the library, although sometimes it’s the online catalogue I peruse. I’m rarely without my Kindle tucked close by – just in case I have a minute to read – and a paper book is always on my nightstand for evening reading. A few years ago I met a kindred soul, Nicole McManus, whose love of reading led to her to become a talented book reviewer. Her skillfully-written reviews have been featured monthly in Sasee for several years now, much to the delight of readers. I am so excited to announce that Nicole has started the very first Sasee Book Club on our Facebook page! This is the perfect book club for those of us who love reading in our pajamas – you don’t have to go anywhere, just log into Facebook to join in the monthly live chat. Early each month, Nicole assigns us a book, with a live chat scheduled at the end of the month. I am confident you’ll love her selections and insightful comments! I invite each of you to join us – just “like” Sasee and the Sasee Book Club on Facebook for notifications about each month’s book and the time of the live chat. Please say hello when you stop by! Happy Thanksgiving!

Flirting with Fall, by Mary Hamilton
Mary loves coastal living! It inspires her to paint, whether in watercolors or acrylics. She says, “The warm, sultry air wraps around me like a hug, and I feel like hugging back. Painting is as close as I can get to embracing the atmosphere where I live in the Tampa Bay area.” Fashion drawing, painting and sewing were treasured activities growing up in Lakewood, Colorado. Mary continued these passions at Colorado State University. Then marriage, work and family fun brought changing priorities. Fast forward to Rockport, Texas, where a painting class disclosed how much she had missed artistic expression. Promptly in 1996, Mary sold her first painting, and how fast it seems, she has been painting steadily for the last 20 years. Her colorful impressionist style communicates her love of nature. Mary and her husband enjoy traveling which often includes family visits near the Deep South coast and Carolina mountains. Mary has collectors in the United States, Europe and Australia. She has owned Etsy shop DreamON (http://DreamON.Etsy.com ) for nine years. Her art is presented on products at http://www.zazzle.com/mhamiltonart. She displays her work at Artists Guild Gallery, Holmes Beach, Florida, and seasonally at other locations. Mary happily accepts commissions.

Reaching for the Stars by Rose Ann Sinay
The summer of my junior year in high school threatened to be hot and quiet and lonely. Most of my friends had gone away on vacation leaving me and my neighbor, Diane, dependant on each other for some semblance of a social life. We didn’t have transportation, or a place to go, for that matter. Fortunately, we found part-time babysitting jobs that would help fill the three months until the new school year started. It was a fortunate fluke when we came into possession of a Magic 8-Ball that must have fallen out of a truck on the way to the dump. It was cracked on one side, but it didn’t affect its “yes,” “no” or “maybe” readout. With the help of our plastic “crystal” ball, a stack of magazines, scissors, a scrap book and lots of wishes, we created a format for our hopes and dreams.
We were assured by our one word psychic that we would go to college together, get jobs at the same company and live next door to each other. As teenagers it was as simple as that; we knew it to be true. As the summer came to a close, our preoccupation with forecasting our futures disappeared. The ball was tossed in a box and forgotten. The thick, ruffle-edged scrap book stayed on my bureau as a reminder of things to come. Diane and I went back to school with a new resolve. The world was at our fingertips. Doug did invite me to his prom, and I wore blue. After high school, our carefully plotted blueprints began to fall apart. My friend went west to college. She wanted to work with animals. I went local. I wanted to write books.
At first we asked silly questions: “Will Doug invite me to the prom? Should I wear a blue dress?” I shook the ball. “Maybe” floated to the top of the window. I took that as a yes on both counts. If we saw something in a magazine that we wanted in our adult lives, we cut it out and pasted it on the thick manila paper, after consulting with our personal clairvoyant. Diane’s pages were covered with cats and dogs. The magic ball said “yes” to poodles and tabby cats. She pasted a picture of a rambling farmhouse, complete with livestock . . . and a farmer. My two-story dream house with black shutters and a white picket fence covered two full pages in my book. I glued four tow-headed children in the windows. My future husband would be tall, dark and handsome and wear a suit to work every day.
8
I met a guy. He was the one. He wasn’t tall or dark, but he was handsome. Turns out he didn’t wear a suit, but he did sport a white lab coat. Diane met her future husband in college. He was deathly allergic to cats and dogs. She changed her major. Over the years, my friend and I exchanged short, informative letters to update each other on our ever evolving lives. Our jobs weren’t the professions that we had dreamed about. Diane was not a veterinarian, and I had not written a book to rival Stephen King or Jeffery Archer. The 8-ball had been wrong. The babies began to arrive. Diane was the first to announce she was pregnant.
“Debbie, if it’s a girl, and Daniel, if it’s a boy, right?” She must have asked the Magic 8-Ball ten times before it had agreed to her favorite names. “Heavens no.” She laughed recalling our life planning strategy. “If you remember, ‘It’ said I was going to have one girl. Well, I’m having twins.” Both babies were boys. Neither was named Daniel. There was a little piece of me that was disappointed in her news. Not that she was having twins. I was happy for her. But I realized things were not going according to plan. I would not, most likely, have the four blonde babies that I’d wished for in my private journal buried in the attic. Having a family had not been as easy as clipping photos out of a magazine. Four years of trying and four years of disappointments had taken its toll. “Do you have that big dream house with the white picket fence?” Diane asked. It was my turn to laugh. “Not yet, but there’s always hope.” After a moment I said, “You know we live, laugh and dream in this house, so yes, I guess I do. Only it’s painted blue. One day we will fill it with children.” When I finally got pregnant, my husband and I were ecstatic. Our son was born with a head full of red hair. Our daughter arrived four years later with beautiful brown curls. I couldn’t imagine having wanted anything other than my colorful duo. Our lives did not follow the whim of a child’s toy. The Magic 8-Ball was a gift that opened our eyes to the myriad of possibilities. It served as a lesson to two teens that life is not “yes,” “no” or “maybe.” It allowed us to recognize and appreciate the blessings achieved through hard work, love and faith. As Iris Gaines said to Roy Hobbs in the book, The Natural, “We have two lives . . . the life we learn with and the life we live after that.” (Bernard Malamud, p.152) I still have the scrap book packed away with my dried wedding bouquet, photographs and trinkets. That hot, boring summer had revealed the stars to me and my friend; the years have given us the secrets to reach them.

Nicole Says…Read The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend By Katarina Bivald Review by Nicole McManus
10
Lic#: CRC-1403
Sara is from Sweden and she has traveled a long way to Broken Wheel, Iowa, in order to meet her pen pal, Amy. Amy described a lovely town, yet Sara is surprised at the actual dilapidated conditions of this small place. Sara is also caught off guard by the news of her friend’s passing. The people of Broken Wheel are friendly, but they aren’t readers. Sara decides to share her love of reading with the town, so she opens a bookstore in her friend’s honor. Slowly but surely, Sara and the books win over the residents, and this small town begins to feel alive again.
My friend Cindy gave me a copy of this book, telling me that I had to read it because the main character reminded her of me. I love it when people love a book so much that it becomes a must read for me, although I was a bit scared to see what Sara was like. All I can say is grab a pen and paper, and be prepared to take a fabulous literary journey. This book is every emotion a reader feels wrapped into one novel. My love of books and reading is clearly on display in this adorable book. This title is definitely on my list of all-time favorites.
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend starts out slow, but builds into a delightful story that will reside in book lovers’ hearts forever. Readers will be able to easily relate to Sara’s need to read, her deep soul-craving desire to have a book in her hand. Reading addicts will chuckle as they read about familiar scenarios that they have experienced in the past. Bivald has done a wonderful job at truly showing the inner desires of a bookworm. This is a cute, quirky read that must be on every reader’s bookshelf.
Nicole McManus Nicole McManus loves to read, to the point that she is sure she was born with a book in her hands. She writes book reviews in the hopes of helping others find the magic found through reading. Contact her at ARIESGRLREVIEW.COM.

A Thanksgiving Story (Maybe) by Linda Hummel
was not shy with words like “depression” or “medication.” She allowed you to get the whole picture of who she was. Even after David got accepted to vet school and left Baltimore, Debbie still came to our house on the day the turkey was carved. And then, on a nondescript evening while I was watching TV, the phone rang. A woman identified herself as someone who worked at Hopkins. “We need to get a message to David,” she said. “Debbie committed suicide.” The woman cried, apologized for crying, and then cried some more. At Debbie’s funeral, the minister invited anyone who wanted to tell a story to come to the pulpit. Almost everyone who spoke told a tale that involved a holiday. “She was always with us at Christmas,” a friend said through her tears. “We shared many Thanksgivings,” said another. By the time the speeches were finished, I wondered if Debbie had ever taken her last bite of pumpkin pie at our house and then driven to her second (or third) Thanksgiving in another neighborhood. Everyone loved her. She lit up a holiday table, apparently all over town. I’m not sure if this is about Thanksgiving or not. Mostly it’s about Debbie. When my son, David, graduated from college years ago, he came home and took a job at Johns Hopkins University. He set his sights on vet school, so this job was interim at best. But there was a surprise waiting – Debbie. They were an unlikely pair from the start. She was much older, never married, and a lover of cats and monkeys. She was bubbly and an avid reader and extremely religious. They became friends.
Today I’m deep in preparations. Along with Pilgrim candles and my fancy napkins, I take Debbie’s cornucopia out of the closet. I picture the group that will congregate in a few days. And this is the moment, every year, when I get sad all over again that I won’t see her there. But then, when I put some gourds and Indian corn inside it and look at it in its place of honor, I can so easily remember the best thing she always brought to the table — herself. So I guess this is a Thanksgiving story after all. Thanks to Debbie. And thanks for Debbie.
As Thanksgiving approached that first year, David asked if we could invite Debbie. There was nothing unusual in the request, as we held a long tradition of an open table. It had seen some of my former students, college friends of my kids, neighbors, and several people whose names have now been washed away with time. Debbie seemed thrilled, and she fit right in. She brought a flower arrangement in a wicker cornucopia, which I placed in the middle of the table. She was a perfect guest, really. She talked to my parents about growing up in New York City. She got right down on the floor with the little kids and played Legos. And as easily as she did those things, as I got to know her, she

Have Fun & Create by Leslie Moore
Janie Aldridge: Wine & Design, North Myrtle Beach This month, we’ll gather to count our blessings and give thanks. What are your top three blessings and why? My top three blessings are: First, my Christian faith in God – what He has done and continues to do in my life and the blessings He has given me. Next, I’m thankful for my wonderful husband, Tom, who is the love of my life and the best father and grandfather in the world. He is our rock! Third, our four sons, our grandchildren and the blessings each one has brought to our life through the years. How do you give back and why? I hope that as a person of faith that I can give back kindness, a loving heart and a shoulder whenever someone needs me. We give back to the community through fundraising events at our studio. Thanksgiving is also the “food” holiday. What will you reach for first on the holiday table? Did you prepare it? I love to cook Thanksgiving dinner. My mother was a wonderful cook, and I pride myself on a little of that same southern cooking. My husband is also a wonderful cook, so I am blessed on Thanksgiving with extra help. I would reach for the potato salad! I make it just like my mother and my Aunt Sissy always did. You have to use Duke’s Mayo if you are a southern gal. Wine & Design is a great place to have a holiday get-together with friends. What should first-timers know before booking their date with you? First it is a fun, feel good place that will certainly put a smile on your face – a place to relax and have a great time. You bring whatever you want to eat and drink, and we do the rest. We also do private parties such as bachelorette, birthday parties, team building and much more. One of our divisions is Art Buzz Kids which is a great way to have kid’s birthday parties – with us doing most of the work and all the clean up! We also have scheduled kids classes and other special nights such as family night. Visit wineanddesign.com/locations/ northmyrtle, and click on our calendar to see all the fun things that we are doing!

I think everyone wonders if they have to be artistic to enjoy a visit to Wine & Design. Could you talk about that please? You need NO experience! Almost all of our customers have never held a paint brush (or at least since school). We have the painting sketched out for you. We walk you step by step through the class. We tell you which brush to use, what color of paint you need, and if you need to mix colors we explain how to do that. If you follow the artist you will go home with a 16” x 20” masterpiece that you have created. Believe me, you will be thrilled to see what you can do and have fun doing it! Plus you can come by yourself or with friends and family. Check our Facebook page to see the results of every class – search Wine & Design (North Myrtle Beach). Wine & Design, North Myrtle Beach is located at 4505 Highway 17 S, North Myrtle Beach. Contact Janie at 843-272-2550 for more information or to schedule your amazing, creative experience!

Sasee Says . . . Shop Local! Support your Neighbors and Friends
In 2010, Small Business Saturday was established by American Express as a day to support small businesses. We all have our favorite restaurants, boutiques and stores whose offerings make us swoon, and, gosh we love it when they treat us like family. But, what you may not know is how much our small businesses give back to our community – and in so many ways! 16
Just recently, Hurricane Matthew brought flooding and damage to our community and beyond. Local business owners were quick to offer help to those in need. Rick Baumann of Murrells Inlet Seafood gave free ice to everyone who needed it. This long time business owner contributes to many local non-profits, generously sharing his time, money and expertise. Edie Chaucon’s Restaurant in Georgetown served numerous breakfasts and lunches to linemen and others working to restore power to our area.
Get Carried Away Southern Takeout lost power during the storm and rather than have their food spoil, they gave it away to anyone who could use it. This local business also provided free food to community support personnel throughout the cleanup. Revel 6 Hair Bar offered a free shampoo service to anyone displaced or without power after the storm.
The ways our small, local businesses help our community stay strong are incredibly varied. Most business owners prefer not to talk about the good they create, but Sasee was able to find out a few ways our neighbors are making a difference. Little White Dress has sponsored Couture for the Cure, an event supporting the nonprofit Caring in Our Lifetime, for many years. This year, they were a part of a new fundraiser for this same organization, Pink Out-Night Out – all the businesses in Rainbow Harbor participated, with all donations going to non-profit. Studio 77 was also a part of this fundraiser benefitting local breast cancer survivors. For every donation, customers were given a generous discount on all purchases! Studio 77 also carries Chavez for Charity bracelets – 25% of the purchase price goes to the charity of the shop’s choice and Studio 77 chose Grand Strand Humane Society. Good Deed Goods gives 10 percent of every gift sale to charity – this unique shop is located inside Lee’s Inlet Apothecary in Murrells Inlet. Grady’s Jewelers in downtown Conway is always ready to help with community causes. They are supporters of the Conway Downtown Revitalization efforts, donate to W.A.R.M. (an animal rescue) and support a fundraiser each year for special needs children.
Pawleys Island Bakery supports so many charities, it’s impossible to list them all. Max Goree makes sure local nonprofits are never without his delicious food! John Gore of B. Graham Interiors has donated to relief efforts for those who lost their homes and/or belongings in the recent river flooding after Hurricane Matthew. He also is a sponsor of the Burroughs & Chapin Museum Annual Spring Tour of Homes. The local owners of Sea Island Trading Co., Callahan’s, Clark’s Seafood & Chop House and The Boundary House are also supporters of Make-a-Wish Foundation, the Brunswick County Sheriff ’s Department, the Burroughs & Chapin Art Museum Bag Ladies Luncheon, March of Dimes and more! Giving back to the community through local fundraisers for Susan G Komen Lowcountry, Manna House Food Drive, Toys for Tots and more is an important part of Dr. Sattele’s work at Dr. Sattele’s Rapid Weight Loss & Esthetics Centers.
Small banks give back in so many ways.
Not surprisingly, our medical community makes a difference in so many lives.
The Citizen’s Bank gives employees like Debi Burroughs time to serve on local boards and in service clubs, as well as supporting funds that benefit many non-profits in the area.
Conway Medical Center has donated nearly a half million dollars to Smith Medical Center, given another half million toward free mammograms and much more!
This is only a partial list – ALL of our local businesses give back. Sasee ladies love to shop, so let’s show our support! 17
Sharing and Caring by Leslie Moore
Myra Levine: Carolina Car Care This month, we’ll gather to count our blessings and give thanks. What are your top three blessings and why? I would say I am blessed with a wonderful family home, good health and a successful business with caring employees. I have a husband, two sons and two grandbabies – Carter is 3 and Callie is 5 months. I’m actually babysitting both of them a couple of days a week and love it! How do you give back and why? We support Bikini Beach Cat Rescue and donate to many different charities and events –we try to be a part of whatever is going on in the community. I love talking to my customers and hearing about their families and sharing about mine – and helping them whenever I can. We’ve been in business for 21 years, and my customers are like my extended family. Thanksgiving is also the “food” holiday. What will you reach for first on the holiday table? Did you prepare it? The first thing I reach for is Mom’s homemade dressing. It comes from my Nanny’s recipe. She only makes it twice a year, so you have to eat all you can! [laughing] I’ve been doing all the cooking for the last couple of years since Mom decided I was “old enough” to take on work of cooking Thanksgiving dinner, giving her a break. I love cooking for my family, but Mom still has to make the dressing – I just haven’t mastered that. This Thanksgiving and Christmas I’ve got to pay attention, so I can learn to make it. As a woman in the car care business would you give our readers some advice about how to properly care for their car between visits to the repair shop? Always keep the proper amount of air in your tires. It saves gas mileage and increases the life of your tires. Adding a gas treatment to your gas tank will also help with keeping the injectors clean, which also helps with gas mileage. If you take care of your car, it will take care of you. We would love to have to you stop by with any questions!
18
I know you go the extra mile to give women a positive experience at Carolina Car Care. Can you talk about that? It is thought that women don’t know a lot of about cars, but neither do a lot of men, really. I try to explain everything, and I show customers how things work and explain why the car is having a problem. It is important to us at Carolina Car Care that everyone feels like we understand their car and that you feel important while we complete your repairs. By the time their car is ready, our customers have had a pleasant experience – I feel like I’m giving back to them by making repairs a breeze! Carolina Car Care is located at 860 Inlet Square Drive in Murrells Inlet and is open Monday–Friday, 8 am-5 pm. Contact Myra at 843-357-0862 or visit her website at carolinacarcare.com.

Sasee Takes A Look:
Garden City Beach This month, Sasee takes a look at a beloved beach, a favorite of those who love its eclectic charm and feel. Horry County’s southernmost beach community, Garden City Beach is the only one that lies in two counties – the southernmost end is in Georgetown County. The community is actually a peninsula; one side faces the Atlantic and the other faces Murrells Inlet. Gairy Nichols and his business partner, Rod Swaim, own Dunes Realty, located on Atlantic Avenue in Garden City. Gairy’s dad bought the real estate company in the late ‘60s and renamed it Dunes. “I was his full time maid for quite some time,” Gairy laughed. Today Dunes Realty rents and sells beach homes along the Grand Strand (www.dunes.com). Gairy and his wife live in Murrells Inlet, where they raised their three children, and are now enjoying four beautiful grandchildren. But growing up, Gairy’s summers were spent in his family’s Garden City Beach house, and he shared some of his memories with Sasee. “Garden City Beach was not developed until the ‘50s and ‘60s. In the ‘40s, the now closed Myrtle Beach Air Force Base used the area for target practice. “You can still find some of those shells on the beach occasionally,” Gairy told me. At that time, folks who had a second home in Garden City Beach would come and spend the whole summer – the roads were dirt and sand, but the county would scrape them regularly. Beach houses were more than a dwelling, they were a lifestyle, and people gave them names, putting up eclectic signs. The Nichols’ home was called “Pandemonium.” Gairy
22
remembers having two rods and reels that he kept in the water, spending his summer days fishing and crabbing – it was an idyllic childhood. “Hurricane Hazel destroyed my family’s home,” Gairy remembers. “Someone in Murrells Inlet actually found the “Pandemonium” sign and gave it back to my father! That sign hangs in my office today after hanging on three family beach houses.” The Nichols hired a contractor to rebuild their home exactly as it was before Hazel, but he accidentally built the house on the wrong lot! “Back then, everyone’s lots were exactly the same, so we just traded with the neighbor,” chuckled Gairy as he shared his love for this small beach community. Garden City Beach is still known as a family beach – but it’s only a short drive to Myrtle Beach where visitors can shop and enjoy exciting nightlife, plus take advantage of a myriad of recreational activities. “Visitors who rent oceanfront homes can also bring their boats and dock them at Marlin Quay Marina during their stay. It’s a lot of fun to take a boat and go to dinner in Murrells Inlet! This is something that other beaches just don’t have.”
Sasee Takes A Look: Garden City Beach, SC The Garden City Pier marks the hub and center of this community and is a beloved landmark, as well as a favorite of fishermen. During the summer months, live music plays at night from both ends of the iconic structure. In September of 1989, Hurricane Hugo destroyed the pier, but fortunately it was spared by Hurricane Matthew. Generations of children have begged to visit the arcade across the street from the pier and during the summer season, it is always bustling. “The arcade is a safe place for children to enjoy,” began Gairy. “And, everyone has to get at least one foot long hot dog at Sam’s Corner while they’re in Garden City!” For a spectacular sunset view, locals and visitors love Gulfstream Café. It’s the only restaurant in Garden City Beach with huge windows showcasing the sunset over Murrells Inlet. And the food is delicious! Another favorite is Sara J’s, located on the marsh, offering pristine views as well as tasty seafood. “I have renters who time their arrival with dinner so they can stop at Sara J’s before checking into their beach house,” said Gairy.
Two dredging projects are planned in the upcoming year to keep area waterways open and beaches renourished. All of the Grand Strand, from the North Carolina border to Garden City Beach is scheduled to be renourished by 2018. Gairy explained to me that because of the damage from the floods in 2015, the timeline was moved up for the area from the Myrtle Beach State Park to the Horry County line in Garden City Beach, but the funding sources have not been finalized. “Hurricane Matthew’s damage may bring in more funding to complete the project this year,” Gairy said. “The Georgetown County side will be complete by April of 2017 and includes dredging Murrells Inlet and renourishing the beaches on the Georgetown County side. “This project will be done in the winter, when we don’t have many visitors, and is scheduled to be completed two weeks before Easter.” November is the perfect time for locals to visit this lovely beach community. Take a walk on the pier or stroll the beach and enjoy the beauty of our area. See you in Garden City Beach!
Garden City Chapel & Retreat Center is another important landmark of the area. This facility serves as a retreat center for church groups throughout the southeast, with eleven dorm rooms, a pool, a snack bar and more. The nondenominational church also provides worship services for vacationers every Sunday beginning in May and running through Labor Day. Gairy told me about the chapel’s children’s’ home mission. “Every year we host groups from twelve to fifteen children’s homes. Some of these children have never seen the ocean and we roll out the red carpet.” In addition to lots of beach time, the children are given trips to Wild Water and Wheels, Ripley’s Aquarium, WonderWorks, the Carolina Opry and more. The non-profit relies on donations to help give these children the time of their lives – to donate, visit www.gardencitychapel.com.

HOSPICE IS about recognizing someone’s life-limiting illness, controlling symptoms and improving quality of life rather then seeking a cure. It is not giving up hope; it is about preserving hope. HOSPICE IS for more than cancer patients. Cancer diagnoses account for less than half of all hospice admissions. Other common diagnoses include heart failure, lung disease, kidney failure, Alzheimer’s/Dementia and others. HOSPICE CARE IS affordable. The hospice benefit is paid by Medicare, Medicaid and by most private insurers, meaning that there are not financial burdens incurred by the family. HOSPICE IS a concept of care delivered in the home setting. Our care includes a strong emphasis on the spiritual component of a person. We believe in faith and family and strive to support both. Our comprehensive hospice services are available wherever you call home.

The Best Kind of Friend by Terri Tiffany
more best friends at my new job. We would lunch together, gossip and console. When I learned I was pregnant after years of trying, I rushed to the phone to share my good fortune with my friends. They planned a baby shower and offered words of wisdom to get through the long nights when the baby cried uncontrollably. One evening, my husband’s brother was accidentally killed – I took the late-night call. My husband broke down in my arms since I was his best friend. His rock. After the funeral, I called my best friend and cried to her. Fortunately, my husband took my many friendships in stride. He knew the depth of my love for him – he just wasn’t the ideal candidate to shop the mall with or go for pedicures. When we moved to Florida for the second time, I was relieved to live near another old friend. We rekindled our friendship – sharing all the details of our life – swearing we would be best friends until we entered nursing homes and couldn’t remember our names.
I was that kind of girl growing up–the one who surrounded herself with best friends. I prided myself on the depth of my friendships, too. I kept the same ones all through high school–whispering secrets about our boyfriends, attending sleepovers and cheering together at Friday night football games. When one of us hurt, we closed ranks and offered our condolences and well-meaning advice whether solicited or not. It’s what best friends did. When I moved away to college, I was forced to gather new best friends. Soon my roommate and I found other besties. We attended frat parties, held each other up during break-ups and ate popcorn at late-night chats. If I spent the weekend studying, one of my friends would bring me snacks and sympathy. For four years, my friendships grew and deepened. Then my roommate left college early to get married. We wept together as we led her down the aisle to her new husband. Which of us would be next?
When she met a man she once dated briefly forty years ago, our friendship took a hit. Suddenly, our fourteen years together paled in comparison to a man she knew for three months. Because of her bad luck with other relationships, she had warned me to tell her if I noticed any red flags in their relationship. Both my husband and I found a slew of red flags. The day I told her my concerns I learned a hard lesson. There are lines friends don’t cross no matter how many secrets they’ve shared or years they’ve endured together. Unfortunately, I crossed one. This time I didn’t have a best friend to weep with. Or so I thought. As I set down my phone, my husband held out his arms. I fell into them. “You’ve always been here as my best friend, haven’t you?” I said, as I looked into his kind eyes. He tugged me closer. “Isn’t that what best friends do?” It took me thirty-nine years to learn the best lesson of my life. I never had to look too far for my best friend again. He was right beside me buying my new sneakers for our long walks together.
It turned out I was. Once again, my best buds surrounded me with words of endearment when I showed them my engagement ring the day we graduated. We hugged and laughed and promised to always stay in touch. My girlfriends were my world. My rock. My husband, on the other hand, called me his best friend. Sure, I understood what he meant. But he didn’t quite get it when I experienced a frustration at work and needed a shoulder to cry on. He would shrug off my concerns with a pat on my arm. When we moved again, I developed

The Six-Word Blessing by Janet Dopsovic
I kissed a lot of toads for many years before I found my prince. We married when I was in my mid-thirties and set out right away to have kids. It wasn’t long before we shared our joyous news with family and friends. Everyone was ecstatic – until a few weeks later when I was bleeding and in a panic. My obstetrician made room in her schedule for me that day and performed a sonogram. The image looked like a black, translucent bath oil bead on a gray background. The news wasn’t good. I had a blighted ovum. My fertilized egg had attached to my uterine wall, just as it was supposed to, but my baby did not develop. I barely heard the good news my doctor was telling me: I could still get pregnant. My husband and I agreed with my doctor’s suggestion to schedule a D&C right away so we could try again with a clean slate. We were cautiously optimistic when the little pink cross appeared on my pee stick four months later. Within a few weeks, my husband cracked a tooth. His dentist recommended extracting it and implanting a bridge. Wanting to think about it, my husband left the office with his X-rays and shipped them overnight to his cousin, a dentist in another state. That same day (Friday), I started bleeding, and my obstetrician again made room for me in her crowded schedule. The sonogram results were the same: another blighted ovum. But this time I didn’t see anything that looked like a “bath oil bead.” I saw absolutely nothing.
30
We scheduled my D&C for the following Tuesday. Sunday evening my husband and his cousin were discussing what to do about his tooth. I heard him say, “I just want a second opinion,” and, in a flash, I grabbed the phone and shouted, “We’ll call you back, John!” My head was spinning from the realization that we were more concerned about losing my husband’s tooth than we were about losing our baby. Still, my heart was heavy. I told my husband, “I just want a second opinion to confirm the truth that we are going to lose this baby too.” The next morning I asked my neighbor for her doctor’s phone number and called right away. “Come right in,” they said. “We have a visiting sonographer in the office today. She’ll squeeze you in.” The sonographer performed a vaginal sonogram, and the monitor on the stateof-the art machine instantly showed a huge gray mass with fine lines running through it. I had never seen a sonogram image like it before – no visible outline of a baby’s head like I had seen in my friends’ pictures. There was no pregnancy sac either. My heart sank. The sonographer took her pen and pointed to the tiniest “blip” on the screen to make sure I could see it moving ever so slightly. She said, “Believe me. This is your baby’s heartbeat. It’s been beating for just a couple of days.” I left the office with a huge smile on my face and the printout of my sonogram. That evening, my husband and his cousin decided to cap his tooth
rather than extract it. And, that evening, my husband and I decided to cancel the D&C rather than go through with it the next day. Seven months later, our beautiful son was born. He has filled our lives with more love than we ever imagined. His existence in our lives has tested our limitations – especially mine.
to see the “blip” on the printout after all these years since the image has faded, but 23 years later, I can still point to the exact spot of his heartbeat. I glance at it every night before turning off the light; in the morning it’s there to greet me when I awake. Every time I look at that sonogram printout, I am filled with the blessing of those six words, “I just want a second opinion,” and all that it means to be a mother.
Our son is everything my husband and I hoped he would be – healthy, smart, compassionate, handsome and perfectly imperfect. He constantly tries our patience, not always making the best choices, blowing off his responsibilities or expending his energies in the wrong places. Despite all that, my prince and I would not be complete without our son. This story is obviously not over yet, and we have great hopes that our son will go on to do things that will help make the world a better place. But for us, I can’t imagine what our lives would have been like if I didn’t react to those words, “I just want a second opinion.” What if he was never born? How many of us would have missed the opportunity to know him? I framed that sonogram printout, and placed it on my bedside table next to our wedding picture and later our first family picture. It’s impossible

The Caviar of the South? by Phil LaBorie
That depends on who you’re talking to and the actual preparation. For openers, there is some contention about what really should be known as “The Caviar of the South.” For some, this appellation refers to soft pimento cheese. This delicious spread, just like fried chicken or grits, has become a traditional symbol of the southern kitchen. OK, that’s one definition, but for me and for numerous other southern food aficionados, The Caviar of the South refers to Boiled Peanuts. I know that there might be some disagreement here about which definition is correct, and I know that there are several other serious contenders including skillet cornbread, collard greens and hoecakes, chicken fried steak, fried green tomatoes, deviled eggs and fried okra, but hear me out. I’m hopeful that my initial encounter with boiled peanuts might serve as a helpful guide to others seeking to fully enjoy a small, but significant portion of the southern food experience. I have to say that after I first tried the traditional boiled treat, I was seriously thinking about writing an angry letter to Paula Deen or some other well-known Southern cooking luminary about how much I detested the taste of South Carolina’s famous boiled peanuts. Then I actually took a couple of minutes to read a recipe about how to prepare them. What a revelation! Bottom line: Oh, you mean that you actually have to boil them and then remove them from the shell before they’re ready to eat? Duh! Here’s what happened: A little while back, I saw a sign in a grocery store advertising Boiled Peanuts. The sign was accompanied by a generous pile of the goobers on a table, a large and inviting metal spoon and a supply of good-sized plastic bags. I scooped several helpings of the nuts into a bag and took
34
them back to my apartment. Then, thinking (without really thinking) that they were ready to serve, dished them up for a valued house guest who was visiting from up north. “Try these boiled peanuts.” I enthusiastically exclaimed. “They’re supposed to be really tasty. A true southern treat. Hope you like them!” In fairness, I had not tasted them beforehand myself. When I did so, one bite proved me to be a completely unreliable southern food critic and also utterly and completely ignorant about how to prepare the treat. The Caviar of the South tasted awful! No wonder, since the shells were unwashed and uncooked, and I had not removed the peanuts, who can blame the little fellows for what they tasted like? Hardly their fault. Talk about a Connecticut Yankee in South Carolina’s food court – that was me – in spades, or nuts, take your pick. I know you’re asking gentle reader, how could anyone be such a complete dunce? It takes practice, trust me, but then I did a little research about preparing this tasty treat. The result of that effort was that I discovered that there’s really no official way to create genuine South Carolina boiled peanuts. However, there is one ironclad, completely practical rule - You gotta cook ‘em before y’all eat ‘em. Further research revealed that cooking times and temperatures vary greatly, as do the actual ingredients (with the notable exception of the peanuts), including the amount of salt and spices to be used, etc. So, based on my research, I decided to give my efforts another go. This time, for starters, I’d start by boiling ‘em up. After several attempts, I finally hit on a formula that I like. So, without any fear of outdoing Ms. Deen or insulting the Peanut Guy in Charleston, here’s my recipe: Illustration by Phil LaBorie
PHIL’S NO FRILLS BOILED PEANUTS A salty, shell-shucking, satisfying snack for sure. You can double, triple or even quadruple this recipe for even more tasty munching, but if you’re a novice boiled peanut chef, I advise starting with a smaller amount so you can maintain control. Also keep in mind that the longer the peanuts sit in salted water, the saltier they will become.
All-You-Care-To-Eat, Freshly Prepared,
The shells also follow the fabled Peanut Soaking Law, i.e., “Leave ‘em sit and they will soften.” Just how soft you want them to be is up to you.

Preparation Time: Five Minutes* Cooking Time: Two hours, 30 minutes, +/Ingredients: • 1-lb. raw “green” peanuts (meaning fresh, raw peanuts) • 1/4 cup Kosher salt (You can also use table salt, but I prefer the Kosher variety - it gives the finished product a more intense taste.) • Four cups of water

Seasoning: • I like to add two tsp. of Old Bay Seasoning. That gives the mix an extra snap, but that’s just a more seasoned opinion.

Method: Thoroughly rinse the unshelled, raw peanuts in cold water. Place the peanuts, water, salt and seasoning in a large pot. Cover the pot and reduce the heat so the mixture stays at a low boil. Boil for two-three hours or even longer, depending on how soft you want the nuts to be. Drain and enjoy within a couple of days since boiled peanuts do not keep as well as their unboiled brethren. * Prep time can vary depending on how much cold beer the cook ingests during the process. So how is The Caviar of the South supposed to taste? From my own experience and from what I gather from other would-be peanut preparation professionals, the finished product should have a sort-of potato-like texture and taste. If you like baked or boiled potatoes, you get the idea.

Unexpected Blessings by Diane Stark
“Do you think we should pay for those ladies’ meals?” My husband, Eric, whispered. We’d headed to Subway to grab some sandwiches after church, and it was obvious that the three elderly ladies behind us in line had attended services that morning as well. They were dressed to the nines, but their outfits were complemented with canes and walkers. I nodded to Eric. “Yeah, let’s do it.” He whispered to the cashier, who smiled and nodded. She pushed some additional buttons on the cash register and then whispered the total to Eric. We sat down with our food, inconspicuously watching to see what would happen when the ladies tried to pay for their meals. Eric, our kids, and I exchanged smiles when we heard the ladies say, “Really? Well, what a blessing that is!” Our seven-year-old son, Nathan, giggled. “This is so much fun! We should do this every day!” I started to explain that that would be impossible because of the expense, but I stopped myself. Instead, I said, “You’re right, Nathan. We should do something kind for other people every day. Can you think of some things you can do?” He shrugged. “I don’t have any money.” “Being kind doesn’t have to cost money. You just have to look for ways to help other people.” Nathan thought for a minute. “I help Mommy in the kitchen. I also help my friend at school when he can’t read a certain word.” “That’s good, Honey,” I said. “I remember at the grocery store a few weeks ago, you helped the lady in front of us unload her cart onto the conveyor belt.” Nathan nodded. “And then do you remember what happened? She told me to choose a candy bar
38
from the shelf and then she bought it for me for helping her. I would have helped her for free, but I was excited that she did something nice for me too.” Eric grinned. “Being kind often has a way of coming back to us.” One by one, each of the ladies walked by our table. “The girl behind the counter said you bought my lunch,” one said. “That was such a nice surprise,” another said. Nathan nodded maturely. “Our family tries to do kind things every day.” The lady stifled a chuckle and said, “Well, what a wonderful young man you are.” She turned to Eric and me. “Did you all just come from church?” Eric nodded and told her where we attend. We chatted for a few more minutes and then the ladies sat at their own table to eat. I’d only taken two bites of my sandwich when another lady came to our table. “I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop,” she started, “but I wanted to find out some details about your church. I used to go, but I haven’t been since my husband passed away five years ago. But I think I’d like to start going again.” Eric and I told her about our church, and we wrote down the service times. “I also wrote our names and phone number too, so you can get in touch with us if you have any more questions,” Eric said. “I’ll come next Sunday,” she said. “That would be wonderful. We’ll look for you,” I said. The lady left, and we finished our lunch. I didn’t think anything more about it until the following Sunday. We were walking into church and my daughter, Julia, said, “I wonder if the lady from Subway will be here.” “I don’t know,” I said. “I hope so.” And then I heard her voice. “These really nice people invited me here,” she was telling one of our deacons.
I went over to her and said, “Judy, I’m so glad you came!” She hugged me. “I told you I would.” Judy sat with us at church that week and went to lunch with us afterward. She told us about her late husband, her two sons and her six grandchildren. She was a wonderful lady and talking with her was fun for all of us. “I’m so glad I overheard your conversation at Subway last week,” Judy said. “None of this would have happened if you weren’t talking to those three ladies.”
Nathan grinned at her. “My mom taught me to do something nice for someone every day, and it doesn’t have to cost any money. Which is good, because I don’t have any.” Judy laughed and promised to come back to church the next Sunday. She’s been true to her word and is now a regular attendee. She’s also become a friend to our family. As it turns out, our “random” act of kindness wasn’t random at all. Our family blessed three elderly women with lunch. But the blessings we’ve gotten in return have far outweighed that small gesture.
And that conversation probably wouldn’t have happened without Eric’s small gesture of kindness. I teared up a little, realizing that something seemingly insignificant had led to this new friendship. When we left the restaurant, Judy hugged each of us. I could tell Nathan was hesitant to hug her, but he did it anyway. “Thank you for that, Nathan,” she told him. “I don’t get to see my grandchildren very often, so that was a big blessing for me.”

Finding Miss Flora by Carol Hartsoe
I dreaded going in. I stopped just outside the entrance of the nursing home and wondered if I could actually enter.
That night I thought about the many things I had always taken for granted.
My preconceived opinion of nursing homes was a major stumbling block. It’s not that I had ever been in one before…it was the stories I had heard. All negative I’m sorry to say. I still feel a bit of shame that I almost let those feelings stand in the way of receiving one of my life’s greatest lessons about gratitude and the happiness that goes with it.
I often complained about having to drag myself out of bed every day to go to work. Miss Flora didn’t like picking cotton but she “did it anyway.”
An elderly friend from my church had recently become a resident at this particular nursing home. This man and his wife had been wonderful mentors to my husband and me. He had been a well-known chef and decoy carver, his wife a talented seamstress. They both were outgoing and friendly and often invited us to their home for brunch. Their invitations always included our two young daughters, and we all enjoyed our visits. How could I not visit him and let him know that he was missed by us? This wasn’t about me.
Sometimes friends, or members of my family upset me… but I am thankful to have them. Some people do not.
I sometimes didn’t like what we were having for dinner…others were happy with very simple meals.
I realized that I had formed an opinion about nursing homes based on what others had told me, instead of learning about them myself. After a few visits I could form my own opinion based on personal experience. Yes, there was some “unpleasantness,” there. But, there was also contentment and joy. I met caring staff members and visitors. I learned that nursing homes fill a great need. Where would Miss Flora be without “her family?”
l u f k n a h t g “Bein a g n i v a h makes for r day” e i p p a h h c mu
I finally went inside, and as I walked down the hall I thought I heard one of my favorite cartoon characters, Elmer Fudd, singing “Precious Lord Take My Hand”. As I turned around to look I saw that it wasn’t Elmer Fudd at all. It was a sweet looking woman with white hair, sitting in a wheel chair. She was happily singing away. Her voice was hoarse with age, yet she had that song in perfect tune.
She wheeled over to me and in just a few minutes I learned many things about this woman. She was from the town of Comfort, North Carolina, and her name was Flora. She thought she was 88 years old but wasn’t absolutely sure. She had moved into the nursing home with her husband several years before. When he died she stayed on and thought she might just stay there until it was her time to “go.” Miss Flora had two sisters but no children. Her favorite supper was soup and light bread. She and her husband had farmed for a living, and she remembered that she didn’t like picking cotton as a young girl but had to anyway. Her preacher used to come and see her but didn’t anymore. “He must be busy, that’s why,” she said. Miss Flora loved singing hymns and visiting with the other residents. They were her “family” now. I actually enjoyed meeting Miss Flora and talking with her. As I left her to find my friend’s room she told me that she would keep me in her prayers. At this point I had tears in my eyes.
42
I didn’t know when I had become so self-centered but after finding Miss Flora I was determined to become more grateful for all the blessings in my life, both great and small. I wanted to be less judgmental and more aware… less selfish and more giving… less grumpy and more cheerful. I wanted to try putting fear and prejudice aside and go walking through unfamiliar doors. I didn’t want to be too “busy” to care about others. I didn’t change my ways overnight by any means, but I am getting there. I have learned that being thankful makes for having a much happier day. Thank you Miss Flora!

Laughter – the Best Medicine by Diane DeVaughn Stokes
I am extremely blessed and I know it. Most people my age are not so lucky to still have their moms. But this has been a very tough year in many ways, and that has made me even more grateful to know I can still hug and squeeze her and tell her I love her. You see, last October my mom wanted to move from her single family house here in Myrtle Beach to Covenant Towers, as she had heard it was a wonderful Senior Living Facility with lots of folks just like her. Most adult children have to beg their parents to consider this, but my mom wanted to be with more folks her own age and to enjoy prepared meals and activities lined up for her. Mom had Chuck and I around her all the time, but having lost my dad thirteen years ago, and two great boyfriends over the years, she needed friends her own age. Covenant Towers has been perfect for Mom. She has an adorable condo, lots of nice neighbors and months later met an incredible man who is a Godsend to her and to me. They are having a ball together. But when I needed Mom to return to her former home and help me decide what stuff to toss, what stuff went to my sister and her kids, and what stuff went
to storage, she could not do it. Mom has never been selfish, so I knew it wasn’t that, but what I came to realize was that she was unable to get rid of anything! She was the kid of Great Depression parents who saved every single item. Every little thing was precious to her. I found old notes and poems I wrote her when I was a kid. Colored pictures my sister made for her when she was very young. Photos, and more photos, VHS tapes of cherished family gatherings, even stuff that belonged to Dad. I cried with each and every cabinet and drawer I had to clean out. Items that others would label junk were treasure to Mom. It was tough tossing anything knowing it meant something special to her. Thank goodness I was able to tackle this project while Mom is still on the face of this earth, because if she wasn’t, I would have never been able to get rid of a single item. I would have been snowed under for life! Those of you who have done this for your own parents totally understand. But it’s my mom’s warm and wacky personality that I want to talk about. Everyone who meets her can attest that she is very unique as she is silly, kooky, loves to make people laugh and can zero in on something even in the most serious moments. For example, Mom fell on July 11, breaking her tailbone and pelvis as she got off the couch to answer the phone – believe it or not, as she was reading Sasee Magazine. No fooling. Then she pushed herself across the hardwood floor to pull the emergency cord in her bedroom, knowing she had broken something, but wasn’t sure what was broken. Mom likes to say that she wished she had been drinking, as that would have been a good excuse for falling! But when the firemen arrived, because they were the first on the scene, she realized she was surrounded by the most gorgeous men, and she asked them if they ever considered making a calendar! And then when I arrived, having been called by the Towers folks, she said she did not need me as she had never been in the bedroom with so many good looking men at one time in
44
her life! And as the ambulance workers were carrying her out of her apartment, she said she needed her curlers, as she never leaves home without them! Yep. That’s my mom. And even though the reality and the pain finally set in after we arrived at the hospital, her spirit and personality continued to soar with all the ER staff and all the nurses during her four day stay in the hospital, where she set her hair in curlers every single night. She would say, “If you don’t look good, you won’t feel good.”
I wish to go!” I have known my whole life that I had the world’s greatest and most unusual mom. But watching her continue to laugh along the way at life’s most challenging situations makes me know that I am blessed beyond all measure to call Nancy Schaefer my mom. I hope I can always face the music and dance with the same positive spunk and spirit.
Then there was six weeks at Covenant Towers Health Center for rehab, where she again made all the staff laugh with her crazy remarks and somewhat offbeat witticisms. They did not want to see her leave as they all said they had never met anyone like her. Mom has always risen to any occasion, throughout her lifetime, with LAUGHTER as her best medicine. Sadly however, during this period of rehab, we all realized that mom’s reflexes were not as sharp as they needed to be in order to continue driving, so it was recommended that she turn in her license and call it quits. When I gingerly discussed this with her, she remarked, “Oh well, I knew it would happen sooner or later. I’ll now be like a queen as you haul me around town everywhere

Doldrums by Erika Hoffman
I felt a bit in the doldrums. Two of my friends, who were supposed to accompany me on a day trip, cancelled. I went anyway. The field trip wasn’t as intriguing as I thought it would be. The next day I developed a cold, and I blamed bus germs from the previous day’s trip. The weekend came, and I learned that a couple of my kids wouldn’t come home for Thanksgiving. That Saturday, we heard from a lawyer that there may be a dispute over a will in which we were beneficiaries, a downer. That night we drove up to see a son and his wife and took them to dinner at a restaurant he suggested. It was loud, expensive, and our halibut was dry. The clientele seemed boozy and strange, and I couldn’t hear any of our conversation as my ears started to become blocked from the cold I was developing. Sunday rolled round, and my husband had work to do from his office and didn’t have time to spend with me. My stomach roiled, and I realized I had more than a head cold; I’d caught some sort of stomach virus, too. My plans to meet an old friend for lunch that next day would have to be scrapped.
I wasn’t owed a good time on my trip the previous Friday. I wasn’t owed good health. I wasn’t owed entertainment by my husband on his day off. I wasn’t promised a perfect holiday with all my kids attending. Life is fragile. Things change fast. Things fall apart. Watching the suffering and the resolve of the French people made me see how minuscule a “bad day” is for me. I felt clueless at how silly and selfish I’d been to wallow in the doldrums simply because things weren’t going the way I’d planned or hoped.
DON’T SWEAT
small T H E
STUFF
And then I turned on the television and heard about the terrorist attacks in Paris and how young folks who had a lively evening planned at a concert were shot down like fish in a barrel. I thought about how they were carefree, anticipating fun, living life surrounded by the joie de vivre which permeates the Parisian air, and then in a flash they were running for their lives, surrounded by grisly cruelty, gruesome wounds and untimely death. I thought about their fear.
In the following days, I watched the news. Because my sickness didn’t abate, I stayed indoors. Glued to the TV, I began to feel for those families racked by misfortune, never to see their kids or sisters or brothers or mothers or fathers or spouses or friends again. I pondered how life can turn on a dime. And I thought how none of us is owed anything.
Gratitude settled over me for all I have: safety in my home, food in my refrigerator, books to read; a computer to communicate with the outside world and two loving dogs curled at my feet. All these simple pleasures are enough. Moreover, I have peace of mind. And those busy folks in the lovely City of Lights zesting after life and amusement and happiness were so quickly deprived of it all. And the French people were robbed of that feeling of comfort and security.
“We don’t know what we got till it’s gone” goes the song. The ditty talks about paving over paradise with a parking lot, but of course the metaphor is that we don’t know what we should be grateful for until it’s lost to us, whether it be people, a place, or a sense of security. Trite as it sounds a person must count blessings every day and never let herself fall into despair, especially over small things when other humans have events that truly try their souls. Keep all in perspective and feel blessed for all that is going right – that’s the mantra I plaster in my mind’s eye.
Erika Hoffman

Lower Cape Fear Hospice Mercy Care Presents
LIGHT A GIFT OF LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE
Join us at the Tree Lighting Ceremony Tuesday, December 6, 2016 ~ 5:30 pm Thomas C. Maeser Auditorium Horry Georgetown Technical College
Our Love Light Tree is an annual symbol to honor those that we have lost. It shines with light to remember all of the patients that we have served over the last year. Each Love Light celebrates a life. In a spirit of remembrance and healing, we invite you to make a donation for a Love Light in honor of a loved one. Reserve your lights today at LoveLightsMercyCare.org or by phone at 843-848-6497. Your suggested donation of $20 per Love Light is appreciated. For the tribute name to be acknowledged at the Tree Lighting Ceremony, your gift must be received by Tuesday, November 15, 2016.
OUR MISSION: Lower Cape Fear Hospice Mercy Care is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the highest level of care and comfort to patients with life-limiting illness; support and counseling to families; and education in Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, Onslow and Pender counties in North Carolina, and Horry County in South Carolina.
