letter from the editor

Cover Artist “Mirror Image” by Robert Maitland Robert Maitland’s paintings are captured moments from his past, often painted from memory. Living in New York City, Robert draws inspiration from the great art museums that New York has to offer. He first visited these museums when he was very young, with his sister and parents all of them artists. There are many artists Robert cites as influential but he particularly likes the Ashcan school, with artists such as John French Sloan and George Bellows as favorites.

I’m blaming my busy, slightly over committed life for my recent inability to remember anything I don’t write down or type into my iPhone. I look at my calendar two or three times a day to make sure I’m not forgetting to do something important. But, all the Thanksgiving dinners of my lifetime are etched into my brain – I can remember the exact taste of my mother’s cornbread dressing, heavy on the sage, and the smell of the kitchen as it baked. And, I remember the years of two Thanksgiving meals in one day when the children were small and we took them to both grandparents’ houses for a few hours – and were well fed at both. These celebrations are still as clear as last Thanksgiving – another memorable day with family. As I come to the end of my 50s, I find I’m so much more appreciative of gatherings like these – where the most important dish is the love we share. Our Sasee writers share many poignant memories in this issue that I know you’ll enjoy reading as much as I did. And as I give thanks this year, I include all of you. Thank you, dear readers, for reading and commenting on this publication – putting it together is labor of love. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Robert was an English Major at Ithaca College in Upstate New York, and also studied acting when he moved to Manhattan. The artist has also published poetry, but painting has always been his first love. He particularly likes to do figurative work and landscape painting. Robert has created cover art for a novel and two books of poetry and often exhibits in group shows in New York. You may see more of his work at his Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/maitlandartprints.

Happenstance? by Erika Hoffman

The day before Turkey Day, an editor friend wrote and asked what I was doing for Thanksgiving. None of my four kids were coming home. Three are married and don’t live nearby, and two of them had plans with in-laws; one an overseas trip to take, and the oldest, a manager, works in the restaurant business a couple of states away. So, Thanksgiving for me wouldn’t resemble a Hallmark greeting card this year. My husband and I planned on eating an early buffet out. Below is how I replied: One can’t have everything every holiday, and so it’ll be fine; a quiet day will be good. And – I am very blessed today – literally. I have a woodsy backyard. I love the tall oaks, leafy maples, and blooming camellias. I sit out there often with my little dachshunds and listen to the birds sing as they flutter in and out of the birdhouse and perch on the cedar birdfeeder and flutter into the branches of the peach tree. Often, as I compose my stories or read books on the writing craft or just a plain, old, good John Grisham tale, I hear the staccato tapping of the woodpeckers on the hollowed-out tree directly behind the chair where I sit and my dachshunds laze. This huge tree has been dead for a while. I’ve been meaning to have someone cut it down for the longest time. Today, it fell on its own, and it toppled and shattered my Adirondack teak chair that the dogs and I occupy most sunny days, like the beautiful North Carolina day we had today, the day before Thanksgiving.

memory lane, and she told me how her mom was one of the deacons at their AME Church, and how her mom had influenced so many young men to turn into better people, and how she wanted me to come to a service there honoring her mom, and how her mom thought of my kids as her grandkids. I remembered how much Virginia had done for my children and when I got off the phone, I felt good about writing Flora a generous check – once again. I didn’t resent it at all or feel that I’d been duped into giving to her. (It’s been 16 years now since her mom passed and about 20 since Virginia worked for me.) When I put down the receiver, I felt good. I felt connected. I felt remembered. I felt blessed that Virginia had come into my life so long ago and helped me raise my four young kids. I felt joyful to be able to write the check.

“Perhaps there is Karma in this world. Good karma.”

Today was so pleasant I was about to saunter out there with them and sit on that very same Adirondack chair, but as I placed my hand on the doorknob, the phone rang. A phone call from someone I’ve not heard from in a year kept me from leaving the house. The woman who called is my age. Her mom was my maid and babysitter when my four children were young. Every year Flora phones me about this time because I think she wants me in her thoughts as the advent season begins; I always gave her mom a nice monetary gift for Christmas, and after her mom died and my kids were grown, and I’d moved from that town, I continued to send Flora money for the holidays, as a remembrance of her mother.

The fallen tree hadn’t been there this morning or later when I looked out the window thinking about going out to read in the sun. It had tumbled during my time on the phone with Flora. Had I been seated in the chair with the dogs asleep on my lap as usual, I’d have been killed. The dogs, too! I thought: Good thing, lucky thing Flora kept me on the phone for an hour! Serendipitous! I’m not one usually to believe in angels or divine intervention, but today stunned me. I’m still in disbelief at my good fortune. So, although tomorrow is not the “perfect” Thanksgiving, I am tremendously thankful tonight for a call that comes but once a year that stops me in my tracks and reminds me of folks in my past, and that perhaps there is Karma in this world. Good karma.

Often, I find the phone call somewhat off-putting and resent it a bit, but I always acquiesce and send a check. Well, today Flora and I ambled down

8

After I did and put it in the mailbox, I thought I’d better take the dogs out, and we went into the backyard, and there lay the rotten, fallen tree over my chair, which had been sundered in half, and large pieces of the trunk had been flung helter-skelter in the yard.

Centering – a New Option for Mothers-to-Be by Sonya Harden, CNM

Centering is an alternative way to receive your prenatal care done in a group setting. The Centering group is your prenatal visit – when you come for your Centering visit, you are seen by the doctor or midwife running the group in a private area of the room. You get all of the same care you would in the office setting, but afterward we sit down with the group to discuss different topics and answer questions. Each visit lasts about two hours. Expecting mothers come for ten, two hour visits. At your first prenatal visit, we will talk to you about Centering, and you decide if you’d like to participate. Then, you’ll have Centering visits until the end of your pregnancy. At first, visits are every month, and then as you get further along, you’ll come every two weeks and move up to once a week during the last month of pregnancy. If you are still pregnant after the ten visits, you’ll have an office visit one week and the Centering group the next until you deliver. There is data showing Centering pregnancies have better outcomes, are more successful with breastfeeding and less likely to have a low birth weight baby or preterm delivery (www. centeringhealthcare.org). We believe it’s due to peer support, and moms getting so much more face to face time with their health care provider. Usually we’re done with “tummy time” in the first 45 minutes and the rest of the time is group discussion. For example, I’ve had more success with moms quitting smoking and my moms are much more likely to reach out with emotional problems like depression. Sometimes you might forget the questions you had before you came in, but another mom asks them. Centering is a national program – we have to have specific training, there are strict regulations about the size of the room and everything has to be done in that one space. Centering normalizes care – you see that everyone’s tummy looks much the same and is having similar experiences – you’ll feel more confident about what you’re going through. We try to have around 10-14 moms in each group. They are invited to bring a significant other or some other support person. Some do, some don’t. Dads in the group are usually bonded by the end of the first session. One grandmother who came to a group knitted everyone baby hats, and another group planned a potluck at the end. We also do a reunion group meeting after everyone delivers – it’s a lot of fun! Sonya is a Certified Nurse Midwife with Coastal Carolina OB/GYN, located at 620 Singleton Ridge Road in Conway. For questions about Centering or to make an appointment, call 843-349-0100.

Why I Go Camping by Melissa Face

“Why do you want to go camping?” my friend Dawn asked.

I looked around at the tents, gas lanterns, cooking equipment, and water filters and I thought, “people spend a ton of money to live the way our ancestors did when they had no other choice.”

I thought about the question. I don’t love camping. I really don’t even like it. My family didn’t camp as a form of vacationing when I was a child; we stayed in hotels like civilized people. Camping is really not something I long to do. “I don’t want to go camping,” I told her. “But I also really don’t want to miss it.” Because my husband knows me well and realizes I can get a little grumpy in certain situations, he was wary when I asked to tag along on his family’s annual trip to the Red Wing Roots Music Festival in Mount Solon, Virginia. He feigned excitement as the date approached. I have to give him credit: he really appeared happy to have me there. But he and I both knew this trip wasn’t about me. It was about our two kids and giving them the opportunity to spend time with their uncles and cousin. That is why I wanted to go. When we arrived at the campsite, I had a beer (I like that part of camping) while my husband unpacked. Fortunately, his brother, Bryan, had set up our tent the day before, so Craig’s workload was pretty light.

?

I kept my mood positive the first two days. I enjoyed the festival, the variety of food trucks, the beer garden, and family time. I loved staying up late by the campfire and getting as sleepy as possible in hopes that I would be somewhat unaware of the fact that I was sleeping on the ground. It didn’t work. I remembered I was on the ground each time I turned over that night. And I turned over many times. It rained on day three, all day and all night. It was still drizzling at bedtime, and though it was technically dry inside our tent, the dampness permeated the fabric. I felt it everywhere. It is possible that I was a little grumpy that evening. I may have even suggested going to the nearest hotel. My lousy mood heightened later that night when our car battery died. I wanted Craig to take us home right then in case it died again, wouldn’t recharge, and left us with no choice but to live at the campground for the rest of our lives.

November 2018

I imagined being stuck at the campsite forever, where I had to walk down a steep, dirt path each time I needed to use the restroom and where I had to go to bed each night on the hard, damp ground. Day three was miserable. It tested my patience and my ability to remain in a calm, pleasant mood. Others in our group weren’t as bothered by the weather as I was. They are better campers than I am, or perhaps just better people. So why did I go?

food truck three days in a row and saying it was the best thing he had ever tasted. I’m not a cook, so I wasn’t the least bit offended by his comment. I didn’t want to miss witnessing the joy both of my children found in playing with Bryan’s dog, putting twigs on the fire, and gathering rocks…just because. I didn’t want to miss the ice cream, kettle corn, pizza, s’mores, and doughnuts the size of small tires.

Why did I subject myself to a buggy bathroom, a damp tent, and no air conditioning in the middle of summer?

And I really didn’t want to miss dancing with my daughter to “Angel from Montgomery,” holding her close, twirling her around, and relishing in her littlehood.

I did it because of the things I did not want to miss. My life has taught me to not miss the good things, if I can help it.

The discomfort I endured was a small price to pay for what I would have missed if I had passed on this trip.

I didn’t want to miss my son, Evan, holding a flashlight under his chin, trying so hard to tell a spooky story by the campfire, while the rest of us tried not to giggle.

That is why I went camping. And why I will probably go again.

I didn’t want to miss the excitement on Evan’s face when his Uncle Scott took him to the front of the stage because the Steel Wheels were playing Evan’s favorite song. I didn’t want to miss my sassy daughter, Delaney, telling Uncle Scott he needed to “trim his beard” or watching her laugh until she got the hiccups from pouring water on herself and everyone else during the first hour of the festival.

Proudly Serving Patients and Families Since 1997

November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month What is Hospice? Hospice is a level of care that is delivered wherever the patient calls home. This includes hospitals, hospice residence facilities or nursing facilities. Hospice is about preserving hope. It is about facing reality and making transitions that are good for the patient and the family. Hospice is for anyone with a life limiting illness regardless of age. Hospice neither hastens nor postpones dying. Sometimes patients live longer on hospice because pain is managed and symptoms are controlled.

Picture Perfect Tradition by Diane DeVaughn Stokes

So how many photo albums do you have stuffed in closets, under beds, in your attic? I have some that belonged to my dad when he was in the service, some that belonged to my mom from when I was a baby, and then I have over forty that belong to me! I’m actually embarrassed to tell you the exact amount of albums or you may think that I am some conceited twit! But truly the photos are mostly of family and friends and not of me.

others. A picture of my mother and my mother-in-law, together with me blowing out a phallic candle at my fertility party caused me to burst into tears, as four years later there still was no baby. I lost even more self control coming upon our Hawaiian vacation where we went to conceive right after that, telling our moms that if the Hawaiian adventure produced a grandchild for them that we would name him or her “Kona.” We were serious. They both groaned.

Recently, my husband decided to sort out all the albums and start digitizing the pictures to save them forever, as he said the ones in the albums will soon fade and fall apart. I said that sounds like a ton of work for nothing. After all we have no children to leave them to, and I do not think my sisters will care about most of them unless they include their own family members. And even then, I am not sure they will want them as we probably gave them copies years ago when the photos were taken.

As we sorted through the pictures, we decided to give the family photos we had already digitized to my sisters, especially the ones of their own children. In some cases where friends were featured in the pictures, we stuffed them in envelopes and sent them onto our friends with funny notes, like who in the heck are these people? Did we all go to Woodstock together? What were we thinking back then? What rock band is this? Could this be the new Beverly Hillbillies? The cast from Peyton Place revisited! Were we ever really this young?

One by one we pulled out the dust covered albums and were instantly taken back in time. I really did have big hair back in the eighties. And my husband reminded me that he was lucky to have ANY hair in the eighties. We laughed as we went through our wedding album remembering the terrible tropical storm that blew the roof off the country club the night before our big day, and how we danced around buckets catching water during the reception. Pictures from a cat funeral my mother held for a friend who lost her beloved feline had us in hysterics. Holiday photos reminded us of the year Chuck wrapped up a red umbrella for me that cracked my family up when I opened it on Christmas morning as we all surrounded the tree. It did seem like an odd present to all of them, but he actually knew I had just lost mine, and he bought me one to match my red raincoat. It just wasn’t your typical gift. And then there were pictures from the best Halloween party we ever threw reminding us of the hearse that drove up into our yard filled with beer. We had won a local radio promotion and did not know it. The partygoers went wild!

Yet the process started to not be fun. I became extremely emotional looking at pictures of our grandparents, our aunts and uncles, our dads, and friends who are no longer with us. I wasn’t even able to go out to dinner that night with our friends as we had planned. Gosh, I am actually crying right now just writing about it. It was way too difficult to continue digitizing this project. Maybe we can get back to it one day soon. Maybe not. Maybe never. Who cares anyway? One thing for sure is that going through albums reminiscing with family is a tradition sadly gone by the wayside. Looking at pictures on the computer does not lend the same feeling or emotion. Maybe its because we were raised watching our parents go through their own photo albums, listening to their memories, hearing their laughter, seeing their smiles, then having their albums passed down to us. It was a cherished family tradition, was it not? And you felt so fortunate and honored to be given the album after a loved one’s death. The kids of today are missing out by not being able to sit around the living room with family, and to hold these precious memories in their hands, transcending love directly to their hearts. Even though our generation has loaded closets, attics and an under the bed array of dusty old albums, I would surely say, we are the lucky ones.

As we opened album after album we were consumed by the memories, mostly good, some more difficult than

–Read It!–

Nicole Says…Read These Books In this issue, we discover that wonderful moments create magical memories and 2018 has been a wonderful year for several of our South Carolina authors. Nathalie Dupree, Valerie Sayers, John Blake White, and Mary Alice Monroe were all inducted into the South Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. While Aida Rogers won a Silver IPPY Award, I think we can all agree that 2018 will be an incredible memory for this talented group.

Second Star to the Right, by Mary Alice Monroe Faye O’Neill left her abusive husband and whisked her two children to London to begin a new career and a new life for them all. When she finds the perfect home, she is thrilled, but is not a fan of her new neighbors. Wendy is in her 90s and sits at her window talking about magic and paints portraits of children in a distant land. Jack is a professor who wants to know more about Wendy, and why she insists she is the famous Wendy from the Peter Pan tale. He is also intrigued by these new neighbors who don’t have much faith in anything, much less magic. Will this unlikely crew be able to come together to discover the truth and help heal broken hearts? Second Star to the Right is one of the first books published by this author and it was recently re-released with a stunning new cover. Mary Alice

Monroe is known for her beach reads that share with readers the importance of preserving nature. However, with this whimsical tale, the author shares the importance of believing! This unique spin on Peter Pan will remind readers what it is like to be a child and believe in the power of fairytales. Hope, love and family drive this story right into readers’ hearts. I was a big fan of fairytales when I was younger. I read Peter Pan, I still own the cartoon movie, and I love the Robin Williams’ movie version, so I was excited to dive into Mary Alice Monroe’s version of this classic. To see a grown up Wendy, still believing, made my heart sing, while her relationship with her daughter made me cringe. I loved seeing the guest appearances from my favorite characters. I think as adults we all get overwhelmed by life’s events and even the monotony of daily life, i.e. bills, doctors, etc. To read a book like this gives us a chance to briefly escape the worries of adulthood and dive back into the endless wonder of childhood.

State of the Heart Vol. 3, Edited by Aida Rogers From the opening quote by Pat Conroy, to the afterward by Cassandra King, this book bleeds South Carolina. Filled with poetry, anecdotes, and illustrations this book is a beautiful mosaic highlighting this state’s culture and scenery. From small town memories, to childhood homes, to life on the marsh or ocean, each area of South Carolina is represented. Some contributing authors include Kim Boykin, and Patti Callahan Henry. Photographs of the landscape and the people bring the times to life.

through the eyes of some of my favorite authors. I hope those that attend the Moveable Feast on the 2nd will be treated to a delightful discussion about the inspiration behind this book. Whether you live in South Carolina, or visit here regularly, you will want to own this unique work.

Volume Three is the final volume in this impressive collection of memories and tales that highlight the heart of South Carolina and the beauty of the majestic landscape. This volume introduced me to several writers that I had not heard of, while giving me a chance to see South Carolina

There’s a Dinosaur in My Bathroom by Kim Delmar Cory

Along with a whale, a truck and a lion. Our bathroom has been transformed from a room for performing perfunctory daily ablutions to a playground for wayward plastic and rubber critters. My morning trek through the land mine of a living room, boasting scattered building blocks in the semi-dark before coffee, often results in a stubbed toe and blue air. We are not alone. Yes, it’s not as it should be but “it is what it is” as they say. Our 30 year old daughter and our three-year-old grandson, who have lived in a different state for the past few years, have returned to the nest recently after an aborted wedding and splitsville. So, her former bedroom, painted a lovely French violet and converted to my office, is now their shared bedroom. Not ideal, but it works. My desk hutch, reading chair, file cabinets and multitude of books and bookshelves have been relegated either to my husband’s tiny office across the hall or stored above the garage. We bought her a bed and new linens, an air conditioner and converted shelves to use as a pseudo dresser. I bagged up clothes I hadn’t worn in a decade to clear the closet and added bins for toys and his books. A stay at home mom for the past three years, this is temporary until she finds a job and can support herself and our grandson. Yup, I hear you. I have lost my office space, our utility and grocery bills have risen, and the solitude of two stodgy 50-something long married adults has been interrupted with watching Sprout TV instead of MASH or Everybody Loves Raymond reruns, shifted to finding room for boxes of yogurt squeezies instead of six packs in the refrigerator, and created a need to keep our dogs from barking when the paper comes early in the morning. Oh yes, we have added another dog to the pack with her dog – three dogs. Maintaining the baby gate between the dining room an d l i v i ng room so

our daughter’s dog can’t devour our geriatric cat requires constant maintenance. Did I mention our wine intake has increased significantly as well? But… How much the richer our lives with their daily presence. Our grandson’s sweet sunshiny three-year-old voice chirping good mornin’ to each of our five animals as he greets them by name. It’s on his morning chore list to help make our bed. He helps Grandpa with his side while I work solo. Our little guy helps Grandpa water flowers every evening. He mirrors my disgust with paying bills, crunching numbers on his own calculator with speed if not accuracy and jotting on ripped off bill stubs as we pay the “stinkin’ bills!” en tandem. It does ease the pain. After dinner on a still summer evening, we wrangle the dogs, and put grandson in the Red Flyer wagon, and walk a few blocks to our local ice cream place – sprinkles on his bowl of vanilla swirl, of course. Followed by bath, pajamas and the art of firefly watching. Where my husband and I used to eat dinner on lap trays while watching our favorite baby boomer reruns, we now all sit at the dining room table together for dinner every night (Grandpa makes the bestest burritos). And there is nothing filled with more grace than the eyes of a three-yearold when he asks if you will read him his favorite book yet again. Although I balance with care on a taut emotional tightrope when communicating about certain subjects with my daughter (the ex, money, how long she will live with us, etc.) she and I have become closer. We can now bop off to a store together while Grandpa watches the “dude,” and it’s lovely when she finds a great recipe in a magazine for the two of us to try as we are the only ones who like zucchini. And after our little love has been bathed, read to and is sound asleep, his beloved Sammy bear tight within his pudgy grasp, my daughter and I share a glass or two of vino while watching our mutual guilty pleasure, Gilmore Girls and scheme how to create an Internet project that will make us “women of independent means,” rife with grande caramel lattes and Prada purses. She has taught me the importance of moving forward, patience, staying focused and afloat, exemplified by her new wrist anchor tattoo with the motivational meaning, “I will not sink.” Three generations blended by circumstance: unexpected but not unwelcome. Precious unplanned memories.

Avoid the Christmas Monster

@Physiciansweightlossmyrtlebeach

by Mark Brown Here we go again. Jack-o-lantern recently tossed in garbage. Discussions about Thanksgiving; that gravy boat needs replacing, or was it the turkey platter? You feel it? Recognize that small twitch in your left eye? Tightening in the pit of your stomach? Yep. It’s coming. The stores had the displays out before you even thought about back-to-school clothes! Why does Christmas arrive earlier every year? And how do we stop it? Take a breath. Accept the inevitable: The holidays are here, and if you haven’t noticed, all of the gifts you could possibly need are already on the shelves, NOW. For retailers, Christmas doesn’t sneak up. They’ve been dealing with it since early January. The planning, the hotels, the questionable food, the pushy vendors, the endless days “at market” getting ready for the NEXT Christmas/holiday season. Everyone has their Christmas shopping habits. I’ve been guilty of all. Some folks see it as a year round sport, perpetually on the lookout for the perfect gift. Then there’s the frustrated, shopper who waits until AFTER Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday to find that “must have” gift. Their heart is in the right place. They just wanted to stuff the turkey without thinking about stuffing the stockings. Then there are the “last minute” shoppers. They just know that the hot item everyone has been paying top dollar for (and hasn’t been seen since 4am on Black Friday) will miraculously appear on store shelves two days before Christmas, deeply discounted. Finally there are those who, once again this year, didn’t realize that Christmas falls on December 25th. We usually call these people “husbands.” It’s sad when anyone misses out on the joy of the Christmas season, when they don’t see the blessings. Yes, merchants want you to spend money with them, but the truth is, we want you to enjoy it. The best advice I can give to avoid disappointment and crowds? SHOP EARLY. Shop weekdays. Shop now, the store shelves are full. Have a budget and keep your expectations realistic. Slow down, and enjoy time with family and friends!

Turkey for Two

by Mary Ellen McGinty Collins With Thanksgiving just two weeks away, I decided to explain sympathy invitations to my newly divorced colleague, John. I was single with a salary that didn’t support frequent trips from Boston to see my family in Pennsylvania, so I often received offers to join friends for special occasions. I assumed they felt sorry for me so I always turned them down with made-up tales of other commitments. And then I made myself seem deserving of that sympathy when my holiday dinner consisted of a bowl of Raisin Bran and maybe some Oreos for dessert. John and I had gone out for a drink after a work event, and I told him to prepare for an onslaught of people clamoring to give him a seat at their Thanksgiving table. Although we hadn’t yet acknowledged the mutual attraction that had been simmering below the surface of our professional interactions, I wasn’t 100% surprised when he said, “Well … would you like to go out for dinner on Thanksgiving so neither one of us will have to accept a sympathy invitation?” My concern about the appropriateness of having a crush on my boss took a back seat to horror at the idea of spending Thanksgiving in a restaurant. As the daughter of a top-notch cook in a family that takes holiday food traditions seriously, I told him that going out was not an option. I’m lucky that my ungracious response didn’t prompt him to retract the invite. “Why don’t we cook?” I asked. “I’ll get all of my mother’s recipes, and we’ll make dinner.” He accepted my alternative and a few days later we strolled the aisles of the Super Stop ‘n Shop. I opened his eyes to the concepts of cranberry sauce made from cranberries and stuffing that doesn’t come from a box while thinking, “The poor man doesn’t know what he’s been missing.” Sometime before the date he told me had gotten tickets for us and his friends, Henry and Laura, to see Forbidden Broadway on Thanksgiving evening. Really? I was unnerved by the prospect of adding strangers to the mix before I even knew my date, not to mention the fact that the friends had been a part of John’s married life. But since I’m a diehard Broadway fan and I didn’t want to make a bad impression, I said I thought it was a great idea.

When he picked me up at 11:00 am on Thanksgiving I was toting a freshly baked pumpkin pie, a stack of recipes on index cards, and a cute dress to wear for the theatre. In his miniscule condo kitchen we talked nonstop, drank wine, and replicated my mom’s traditional feast, scaled back for a party of two. Since we both had zero interest in watching football while the turkey roasted, we headed out for a chilly stroll around Jamaica Pond. Several hours later, we enjoyed our dinner sitting on the floor at the candlelit coffee table. Around 7pm we changed clothes and headed to the theatre for Part II of our date, which I hoped would go as well as Part 1. The friends were perfectly nice, but the conversation was awkward and I kept wondering if they were comparing me to the former spouse. I couldn’t relax enough to enjoy them or the show, so I just counted the minutes ‘til I could impress John with pie that was baked from scratch. When the house lights came up Henry surprised John with a request for a ride to Laura’s house 40 minutes away rather than Henry’s house just across town. That wasn’t on our agenda, but John is a nice guy. He acquiesced and I went along, hoping for a continuation of our date after the drop-off. It was midnight by the time we were back in his apartment with our pie. And when he delivered me to my front door at 2:00 am, he suggested a second date for turkey sandwiches on Saturday night – just the two of us. This year will be our 34th Thanksgiving together, and our families don’t expect us to join them. However, we will still have to decline overtures from friends who can’t believe that turkey for two is anything but sad. For us, the private dinner/long walk/no football strategy is the perfect way we give thanks and celebrate the anniversary of an excellent first date. Tradition is in the eye of the beholder.

Choosing Memory Care for Your Loved One by William Burr and John Briggs

Every 65 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s (Alzheimer’s Association), while a new case of dementia is diagnosed every three seconds worldwide (World Health Organization). The growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s and dementia has created a need for specialized caregivers and memory care communities. Continuing Care Retirement Communities offer a full continuum of care including Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing and Rehab. This means no matter what stage of aging you encounter there is no relocation required, so residents can maintain consistency. Being confident in the services being provided through a transition from Assisted Living to Memory Care is important for residents and family members. Generally, residents with Alzheimer’s or dementia live together in their own neighborhood of a larger care residence such as The Lakes at Litchfield.

Pirouette® Window Shadings

Duette® Honeycomb Shades

You should always know what to expect every step of the way regarding the level of care and your loved one’s care plan. A resident with Alzheimer’s or dementia requires a more intense and frequent level of care – be sure the neighborhood you choose has high levels of trained staffing. Each staff member in Memory Care should be a Certified Dementia Practitioner, ensuring they’re able to provide the best and most informed care for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Finances, location and other issues specific to your loved one’s health should all be part of the conversation. Even if the move is within the same neighborhood, make your loved one’s new room or space look and feel as familiar as possible. Stock the space with pictures of loved ones and friends, memory books or photo albums. Reminiscing about the past can help a person who has Alzheimer’s bring reassuring memories into the present. In addition to the care services, Continuing Care Retirement Communities encourage socialization and togetherness with peers and family/friends through events, activities and trips. The holidays are an especially important time for your resident to participate as much as they are able. The Lakes at Litchfield has trained staff to answer any questions and guide you through the process of helping your loved one transition into memory care.

Things of Old: A Conversation with Steve Rothrock by Leslie Moore

M

ost of us love old things – they reinforce our connection with the past, carrying treasured memories through generations of users. The hutch that belonged to your grandmother, a set of china inherited from your great-aunt, any number of “things” that are so much more than just objects. Steve Rothrock, an antiques dealer with 40 years of experience, spends 5-6 months each year in Scotland, a country that he loves, and purchases one of a kind, exquisite pieces to sell in his retail space in Litchfield. “I also love shooting pheasant, grouse and other wildfowl – Scotland has some of the best shooting in the world,” Steve told me. The majority of the antiques found in Rothrock Collections come from Northern Scotland and England – but the showroom also features beautiful “old things” from France, Germany, New York and Tennessee. Steve attends auctions and estate sales, plus he has contacts that find and purchase items for him. Currently he has well over 1 1/2 million dollars worth of beautiful antiques available for sale, many of which came from Scottish country estates built in the 1800s. Through the years, the families sold pieces they no longer wanted or needed. As we walked through his large showroom, Steve talked to me about different pieces of furniture. Actually, these beautiful pieces are more works of art than furniture – each crafted by hand, without the benefit of electric lights or any modern tools. And each piece has a fascinating story – a story without an ending, waiting to be completed by the next family enjoying it. As someone who knows very little about antiques, I was fascinated by Steve’s conversation about the different pieces in the showroom. He showed me an antique print of Victoria Station in the 1800s. The station was filled with people packed and ready to travel to Scotland for holidays that traditionally began in August, taking everything they needed for a country vacation. “Wealthy people from the cities would travel every year to hunt grouse, pheasant and other waterfowl – all while enjoying tennis, water sports and the picturesque countryside.” A huge wardrobe caught my eye and Steve explained, “These grand homes didn’t have closets and they crafted these beautiful pieces to hold their clothing. Most of this furniture had a very practical use when it was created,” he continued while showing me some of his favorite inventory. We looked at another intricately carved, French piece, called a soldier’s chest, also with a fascinating story. “Every estate had soldiers that worked for the owner, protecting his property. They either lived in the basement of the estates or in the villages. These chests were used to hold their uniforms, swords and other equipment.” With so much to choose from, I wondered how to begin shopping for antiques and was surprised by Steve’s answer. “Buy what you like,” he told me emphatically. “And don’t be afraid to mix eras and develop your own, eclectic style.” To care for your antiques, Steve’s advice is to polish the wood regularly with a high quality polish. Furniture in his store, and his home, is polished at least several times a month to keep it shining and protected. Steve’s love of antiques started completely by chance when he met an antiques dealer who showed him around her warehouse, explaining the origins of each piece. At 36 years old, Steve’s life and career changed to reflect his passion for “things of old.” “I was fascinated by the history and craftsmanship,” he remembers. “Being around these beautiful pieces gives me a sense of continuity, a confidence that the world is going to be okay, regardless of what’s going on around us.”

affectionately called, “La Dump,” is Steve’s hideaway and favorite place on the property, showcasing his love for bird hunting and treasures found around the world. When I asked him his most treasured piece in his home, this devoted husband told me, “My wife, of course.” Jean and Steve travel to their home in Scotland several times a year, both for business and One of his favorite finds was a Steinway grand piano he purchased in pleasure. They also lived on a farm in South Africa for a number of years Hungary. “I paid $1,800 for it, paid to have it shipped to London where it before making Perth, Scotland, their permanent second home. sold at auction for $28,000 at Sotheby’s in London.” Steve laughed as he was telling me this story and went on to say he used the money he made “I get so much pleasure bringing fine antiques to people’s lives – a dining from that sale to buy antique landau carriages – which didn’t sell and room table that generations of family members gather around for Sunday he lost most of the money. “That’s how it goes in this business,” he said. dinners and holidays, a chest of drawers that adds so much beauty to the Today, Rothrock Collections has customers from across the southeast owner’s lives. Antiques are timeless and will be used for generations to come.” traveling to find the perfect pieces for their home. “You have to remember how these pieces were built. A craftsman would take a large piece of mahogany or rosewood or other fine wood that was nearly priceless – it took great skill to turn that rough piece of wood into something that would last for hundreds of years.”

Steve lives with his wife, Jean, in a stately, historic home in downtown Georgetown, circa 1905. Jean is a landscape architect and together the couple created a showplace of priceless antiques surrounded by beautiful gardens. Every detail has been carefully planned, from the French silk fabric used as wall covering in the dining room to the massive, exquisitely carved, antique French fireplace in the den. A charming guest house

With an eye to the future and roots firmly placed in the past, Steve Rothrock continues to travel, expand his business and bring beauty to homes across the Carolinas. Stop by and meet Steve at Rothrock Collections, located at 14319 Ocean Hwy in Litchfield. The store is open 10am-4pm, Monday through Saturday. Or give him a call at 843-520-9965.

An Ordinary Special Day by Diane Stark

“Nathan, why haven’t you worn your new Star Wars shirt yet?” I asked. My nine-year-old son came into his room where I was filling his clothes organizer with outfits to wear to school in the days ahead. But for the last three weeks, the same outfit had remained in the organizer. I didn’t understand why. “You were so excited when we bought that shirt,” I said. “I figured you’d wear it right away.” Nathan shrugged. “It’s brand new, so I’m saving it.”

I held the package of chicken in my hand, debating whether I should use it that night or not. Because of the extra expense, I tried to save them for nights when I was especially busy or especially tired. I decided that tonight didn’t qualify and I could make the chicken strips myself the old-fashioned way. I started to put the package back in the refrigerator when the expiration date caught my eye. The chicken strips had expired two weeks ago. I sighed, irritated with myself. I hated wasting food, especially a pricey item like this.

“Saving it for what?” “I don’t know. Like a special day.” “Okay, Honey,” I said. “The reason we use the organizer is so you can choose your own clothes each day, so it’s up to you when you wear it.”

“We should enjoy the little things each day, and that can make every day feel special.”

I thought of all of the nights when I could’ve used the chicken, but instead, I’d decided that I wasn’t busy enough or tired enough to deserve the convenience. I’d saved them for a night when I really needed the extra help. And now, I had to throw them away.

He thought for a minute. “No, I think I’ll save it. It’s such a cool shirt. It needs to be saved for a special day.”

As I set about making dinner, I realized how often I’d put off treating myself well, even when it was easily within my ability to do so. Television shows I enjoyed watching sat unviewed on our DVR for weeks on end because I didn’t allow myself to watch them until my To Do List was complete. And since I never completed everything on my To Do List, I never got to enjoy my shows. The same thing happened with novels I wanted to read and friends I wanted to meet for lunch or coffee.

I smiled, knowing I wouldn’t change his mind. “It’s up to you, Bud.” I patted his shoulder. “I’m going to start dinner now. I’m making chicken quesadillas.”

Somehow, I’d developed a thought process that required me to earn time to relax. When had self-care become something I had to earn? Why did “me time” always come last on my To Do List?

I went downstairs, still musing at my son’s “old soul” attitude toward wearing his new shirt. I found it funny that a kid who loves instant gratification was saving his favorite shirt for a special day.

I’d gotten into a bad habit, and worse yet, I feared I’d passed the pattern onto my son.

He nodded. “I’ll probably wear it on my birthday. That’ll be a special day.” “Your birthday is still several weeks away. Go ahead and wear the shirt, and I’ll wash it before then. That way, you can wear it now and then again on your birthday.”

I opened the refrigerator to grab the ingredients I needed for dinner. I grabbed a bag of shredded cheese and smiled at what I found underneath. It was a package of pre-cooked, grilled chicken strips. They were expensive, so I didn’t buy them often, but I loved the convenience of having half of the dinner prep work done for me.

The phone rang. It was my mother-in-law. “What’s wrong?” She asked. “You sound upset.” I sighed and told her what was wrong. Ten minutes later, I got off the phone, feeling much better.

I looked at the shredded cheese and rethought my dinner plan. I remembered that three weeks ago, I’d made a double batch of taco meat. I’d frozen the extra meat so that I could take another night off from cooking. Normally, I’d save the taco meat for a dinner emergency, just like I had the chicken strips that were now in the trash. But no more of that. Tonight was the night. I tossed the frozen container in the microwave and then called for Nathan. “Bring a book,” I said. “We’re going to read together while dinner thaws.” He came running with a smile on his face. Reading together was his favorite thing. We snuggled on the couch, reading instead of cooking. It felt terrific. When the taco meat was thawed, we ate, using the paper plates I save for busy nights when I don’t have time to wash dishes. I grinned, realizing that using paper plates made me as happy as some people feel when they pull out their fancy china. “We’re eating on paper plates, so we can read some more after dinner,” I told Nathan. He grinned. “All of the sudden, today feels like a special day.” I grinned back. “I know, and we have Grandma to thank. She told me not to save the good china for a special day that may never come. She said we should enjoy the little things each day, and that can make every day feel special. We can’t wait for someday.” My smile grew. “Nathan, someday is today.”

Give Your Mom, Sister, Best Friend or Yourself the Gift that Lasts a Year!

My mother-in-law raised eight kids in an era when self-care wasn’t even thought about. But her wise words taught me that treating myself well isn’t something I should have to earn. We all deserve to relax and enjoy small pleasures, even if what makes you happy is eating tacos on paper plates so you have more time to read. The following morning, Nathan chose to wear his new Star Wars shirt. When I asked him about it, he said, “I decided to make today a special day. You know, just for fun.” I grinned at my son, so grateful for this ordinary, special day.

Nicole Says...Read These Books to Your Kids Reviews by Nicole McManus The holiday season is upon us. Now’s the perfect time to gather loved ones and share our gratitude. ‘Tis the season to have hope and believe in a bit of magic; to celebrate traditions and make new ones. Holiday books were a big tradition in my house. I still have the tiny little pop-up Thanksgiving book that I read every year. Reading those books, officially marked the start of the holiday season for me. Here are four books that will get your children in the holiday spirit!

The Story of Thanksgiving

By Nancy J. Skarmeas Illustrated By: Stacy Venturi-Pickett The Pilgrims came to America to be able to worship their own religion. After a harsh winter, they were able to plant crops and, with the help of Squanto and the Native Americans, they were able to have a big harvest. Everyone gathered to celebrate for three days. We still gather to this day to give thanks and spend time with family. We even eat a lot of the same foods that were served at the first Thanksgiving. This board book explains Thanksgiving in a short and simple manner to help toddlers and young children begin to learn the importance of Thanksgiving. The beautiful pictures are realistic and the small size makes it easy for young readers to hold.

A World of Cookies for Santa by M. E. Furman Illustrated By: Susan Gal

Take a trip with Santa as he travels the world, leaving gifts for children. Readers will learn different customs each country has for celebrating the holiday, as well as other names for Santa. This book also shares recipes for various treats left out for Santa. This is a delightful book! Several countries are highlighted, from the very first stop on Santa’s trip, to the last stop before home. I enjoyed learning about fireworks and piñatas, as well as all the different treats. I love how the author stressed the idea of giving, not getting. The children give cookies to Santa (or carrots for the reindeer,) while Santa gives gifts to children. The pictures are stunning… they give off the feel of classic Christmas ornaments, while featuring each country’s culture. The fact that families can read this book, and then go bake the different cookies together, is incredible! This is a great book to learn about other customs, while preparing for Santa’s visit.

Junie B. Jones: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and other Thankful Stuff) By Barbara Park Illustrated By: Denise Brunkus

It can be hard to be thankful, when you are in first grade, especially when you don’t like Thanksgiving food, and May is always ready to get you in trouble. So when Junie B. and the rest of her classmates are told to make a list of everything they are thankful for, Junie B. worries their class will lose the contest. Determined to make sure they are the first, first grade class to win, she works hard to come up with a long list. I have never read Junie B. before, but I will definitely be looking into the other books. This story was hilarious! I laughed out loud during certain points. Children will be able to relate to Junie B.’s struggles, while everyone will be able to appreciate several things she is grateful for, like toilet paper. This chapter book is a great read for the entire family! Judy Moody & Stink: The Holly Joliday by Megan McDonald Illustrated By: Peter H. Reynolds Judy Moody is excited that Christmas is around the corner. She is making a very, very, long list of everything she wants. While her brother, Stink, only wants one thing… snow on Christmas Day! Christmas Day snow is rare in Virginia, so it is unlikely that Stink will get his wish. However, when a mysterious mailman shows up, named Jack Frost, who likes the cold, random things happen. Throw in a Holiday Festival and things get a bit crazy. Will Stink’s wish come true? This is a cute book for the Christmas season. Readers will chuckle at the crazy antics. As a fellow Virginia born child, I can tell you Christmas snow is very rare, indeed! I felt Stink’s pain, when it came to wishing for a white Christmas, and I truly appreciated the moral of the story. What would you do to make a loved one’s wish come true?
