Letter from the Editor It’s the holiday season! For many years I’ve spent the entire month of December running from one thing to another, trying to get it all in. By the time the Christmas paper is ripped off of all the gifts and the New Year has been welcomed, I’m completely exhausted. So last year, I decided to take some time for the three “Rs” – rest, relax and renew. I didn’t do everything, I went to bed a little earlier, and I took time for myself. But most importantly, I spent time thinking about the year gone by – and planning for the one just starting. It made my Christmas season much more relaxing, and I actually enjoyed the events I chose to attend. I hope you’ll join me and take time to enjoy the beauty and peace surrounding us this month. Another holiday tradition most of us share is one of giving. When my children were small, we made shoebox gifts to be sent overseas and bought presents for angel trees. These days, I try to find something or someone different to help every year. In this issue, you’ll find an interview with the director of a local nonprofit called Caleb’s Dragonfly Dreams. Shellie Rabon and her volunteers are helping local children, our children; make memories that should be a part of every childhood. I hope you’ll consider helping. Finally, I want to thank all of you for supporting Sasee in 2019. We could not do it without you. Do not miss the January issue – it “might” have a few surprises! Color comes naturally to Russian-born, Ontario-based artist Julia Klimova. Her early childhood in southwest Russia was happy, filled with laughter and inspiration. As far back as she can remember art was a part of her life. She was able to use her artwork to open doorways to other places and escape into them while painting. Her mother always encouraged her to explore her surroundings, to find inspiration in the smallest details and to paint what she felt. The narrative of her artwork is subject to both her past and her present, grasping that which words cannot express. Julia Klimova’s unique perception of color intertwines with her natural ability to captivate her audience visually and emotionally. Julia went to school to study fine arts and upon graduation worked as an interior designer. It wasn’t until she moved to North America that she took on art as a full time career. After a brief stay in Tennessee, Julia moved with her family to Southern Ontario where she now resides. Julia’s work has been exhibited internationally in places such as Toronto, New York City, Charleston, South Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia, Scottsdale, Arizona, and the United Kingdom. kay, I admit that my body has been through many transitions over the years, not to mention manufacturers have altered their sizes, and I will never be an online shopper. I have to try things on!

Who out there in Sasee-land can say they ALWAYS wear the same size wherever they shop? My clothing sizes are all over the board. Except when it comes to Chico’s where I am always size two! Ahhhhhh. Got to love it! It’s the only store I can actually go into without trying anything on and have it fit perfectly when I get home. But even if I were a perfect size every time, I would still opt to support local merchants. I don’t understand why more folks do not. Stores all over the country are going out of business. Look at Conway. They used to boast about six antique stores – now you can barely find one and the turnover of fashion centers changes monthly. I was in Georgetown recently and one shop owner said he was so angry about hurricane reports by local newscasters saying Georgetown was under water, and he was down financially by thousands of dollars. Negative publicity must stop. Just because one business has flooding does not mean they all do. He also said folks are not supporting local businesses. It’s too easy to use the internet instead. Yesterday a friend came over to my house to see if there was a way to install a fan in the pitched ceiling of my back porch. He suggested I go online as Amazon has tons of choices. I snapped back that I always buy local. He then asked me where I planned to buy the fan. I replied I would shop at Lowes or Home Depot.

An astounding 650 Dress Barns, 261 Charming Charlie’s, 805 Gymboree’s, 390 Family Dollars, and 269 Wal-Mart’s worldwide have shut their doors. New shopping habits have affected every demographic – high and low-end. Everyone needs to think seriously about shopping at home, especially this holiday season. You all know the famous line spoken by ZuZu, George Bailey’s daughter from Frank Capra’s 1946 movie It’s a Wonderful Life that says, “Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings.” Well, every time you hear a LOCAL cash register ring, you get your wings. You may just be the person, or “angel” who saves a neighbor’s job or helps a local merchant stay afloat. Let’s make a conscious effort to make these next few weeks merry and bright for those businesses who count on us to make a living, to make their house payments, and to feed their families. It’s no different than buying a toy for a child in need, or donating a turkey dinner for a person who is hungry, and all of us know how good that feels. Shop at home. Shop local. Be an angel. Earn your wings.

He said, “Well, they are not owned locally.” “Yes” I said, “But they employ our local friends and neighbors.” Duh! It’s still better than ordering online. Today, just as I was writing this article it was reported that Forever 21 filed for bankruptcy hoping to reorganize, closing several stores, and banking on others to maybe turn a profit in 2020. Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, Kohl’s, JC Penney, and Sears have all had serious problems.

Banning Buts by Erika Hoffman

ecently I had a house guest, a woman I’d not seen in 25 years: the wife of my husband’s friend from grad school. The couple was relocating. He’d gone ahead to take a new position; she was to drive up after their house had sold. Over the last couple of decades, I’d exchanged holiday cards with her despite no visual or phone contact. Because our home was two states north of hers and two states south of her new home, our place was an ideal one-night stop. It might be fun to catch up although I had never known her well. I always deemed her an intellectual. For some reason, I figured she was brighter than I. That was the assumption I’d harbored these many years. She first said she was coming Saturday, so I cancelled my plans. Then, she called to say she’d arrive Sunday. Then, late Sunday she changed her mind again. On Monday, she started her drive. After several phone calls and getting lost multiple times, despite GPS, she crossed the county line. On the last lap, she missed my house, and I had to talk her through the final spate, yard by yard. She was in a tizzy when she arrived. After entering my home, she got turned around repeatedly and ended up in the garage, down the basement stairs, and in a closet when she couldn’t locate the door to outside, where her car was parked, which you could see by looking out the window. I poured her wine to relax her, and soon she prattled on about her career, sons, and how indispensable she was to her employer. She looked around my cluttered home and told me how she had downsized, and how considerate it was to get rid of possessions and not burden one’s grown children with having to dispose of the mess someday. I cooked dinner. My husband brought home a caramel cake. The only comment she made regarding the meal was that she never eats cake. Yet, she ate a slice and didn’t compliment it. She studied the portraits of my children on the walls, and although my kids are good-looking, she made no comment. I took her to the guest room where I had made up the bed, and I showed her the stack of laundered towels and bath products; she said nothing. Later as we chatted more, I found she did have a favored pet phrase she repeated often: “I hope you don’t take this wrong, dear, but...” and then she’d proceed to state something that would have been better left unsaid.

The next day I had to trek out of town to a fancy shop to pick up my altered mother-of-the-groom gown. I told her she need not come, but she insisted it would be fun, and so come she did. I had planned on meeting an old friend for lunch, so I sent a quick missive to my pal alerting her to my taking along a houseguest. When we reached the boutique, I was ushered into the dressing room to try on my wedding attire. My old pal oohed and aahed and gushed how the style gave me an hourglass figure. My houseguest who’s as thin and flat as a straight pin commented: “Your bra strap shows.” I said that the seamstress had already widened the gown’s straps, and I was sure the tiny bit of beige undergarment would not be spotted under the matching jacket. When I returned to the change room, the seamstress rolled her eyes and muttered, “No one will notice that micro-millimeter of bra strap!” I laughed. “Who will notice me anyhow with gorgeous young bridesmaids and a pretty bride nearby?” During lunch, my good friend, in making conversation, said she was considering liposuction and a tummy tuck. My houseguest, who had met my pal twenty minutes before, turned toward her and said, “Don’t take this wrong, but have you heard of Weight Watchers?” My friend smiled. “I have no discipline,” she said. When my houseguest left for the ladies’ room, my buddy asked me where she was from, originally. “Miami,” I answered. “But she talks with a British accent!” “She was a British Literature major.” We both chortled at that. I hugged my buddy good-bye. Then, I strolled in the rain to my car with my gown in plastic and my houseguest in tow.

“What color is your dress? I couldn’t tell inside,” she said.

“Dusty rose,” I answered. “Don’t get me wrong, but my mother-in-law wore the same dress with that same hue – forty years ago at my wedding.” “It’s a classic,” I quipped and counted the minutes until I could reach my car and turn the radio on. That evening I dialed my husband and asked him to hurry home to go out to dinner with us. I wanted another body present so I wouldn’t erupt if one more time I heard, “Don’t take this wrong but...” The expression made me think back to when I was a young mother, and my mother-in-law started conversations with: “I know I shouldn’t interfere but…” and then she’d interfere. I feel “but” is the igniter of arguments. If someone wants to throw in a caveat, it’s better to stop cold, insert a mental period and begin a new sentence. Or use the word “and.” Once you stick your “but” into the conversation, the listener turns off her listening ears and braces for criticism. As I listened to TV’s Dr. Phil today, I noted how he almost prefaced his own advice by correcting a guest using a “but;” yet, he caught himself and stated, “I almost said ‘but’…” Apparently, psychologists aren’t immune to wanting to “but in” with advice; however, they realize the word is counterproductive. Ergo, let’s not just ban “butts” from littering our highways, or ban sagging pants in school that show a bit of “butt,” but let’s ban “buts” from our speech with friends and associates and folks we want to advise. Along with casting out “but,” let’s also retire the expression: “Don’t take this wrong.” When you hear someone say that, you know the ensuing words will render you feeling utterly wronged. If the past is a predictor of the future, the next time I see this long-lost acquaintance with the anglophile affectations will be in forty years. I have my repartee ready. “Don’t take this wrong, dear, but I’ve unplugged my hearing aid.”

This is not a typical World War I book. Rachel Barenbaum weaves a fantastic tale of love, science, destiny, and survival. Two Jewish siblings living in Russia are forced to make tough decisions in order to help their family escape the Czar’s impending war. However, the sister, Miri, is an incredibly talented doctor who is about to become a surgeon, despite facing backlash in the male-dominated field. Meanwhile, her brother is a brilliant scientist determined to disprove Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Told from various points of view, this is fascinating story for all to read. Similar suggestion: My Name is Mary Sutter, by Robin Oliveira (A midwife wants to become a surgeon, during the Civil War.)

For the lover of all things Lowcountry: Riverside Blues: A Gullah Tale, by Tracy Bailey

This coming-of-age novel, will sweep readers back into time. Set in South Carolina in the 1950s, Mabeline must find her path, as she relies on the history of her Gullah ancestors. Tracy Bailey’s writing is so vivid that readers will feel they are reading and seeing a movie at the same time. This book can easily be swallowed up in an afternoon, or slowly savored as a nightly read. Once readers have finished this book, they will be hoping the author will publish another one soon. Similar Suggestion: Cigar Factory, by Michele Moore (Charleston’s history)

For the truly obsessive reader, who loves books about books: The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, by Kim Michele Richardson

This is a book for book lovers. It is also a book that will inspire you to conduct research after reading it. If a reading group selects this book, be prepared that members will want to discuss it long before the scheduled meeting. Cussy Carter has a blue tint to her skin, which leaves her feeling isolated. However, when she takes a job as a member of the Pack Horse Library Project in Kentucky, she meets a wide-range of people. As her confidence grows, she is able to confront those who have treated her poorly. This story proves just how important a novel can be…. Whether it provides knowledge or a mental escape, books truly are a perfect gift. Similar suggestion: The Giver of Stars, by JoJo Moyes (Five different women sign up to work for the mobile library system, through the WPA program.)

For the all-things-thriller fan: Shamed, by Linda Castillo (Kate Burkholder #11)

Despite this being book number eleven, this is an excellent stand-alone mystery. Once started, readers will not be able to put this one down. Kate Burkholder is chief of police, and a former member of the Amish community. When a grandmother is murdered and a young girl is missing, it takes everything in Kate’s wheelhouse to solve this crime, in hopes of bringing the young girl home. However, secrets keep piling up, and families may be destroyed once the truth is finally revealed. Similar Suggestion: Murder in Plain Sight, by Marta Perry (Book 1 in the Amish Suspense series)

t Christmastime when I was young, I could count on three things: Santa Claus, midnight Mass and a last-minute shopping trip with my father.

“You’re going to pay for my hot chocolate, aren’t you now?”

One or two days before Christmas, Dad would ask me to go along with him to buy a gift for Mom. I’d never say no, although I often wished I could. While I loved the one-on-one attention from my father, the last-minute part of the deal always made me nervous. Looking back, I realize Dad hoped to make use of some inborn “womanly” instinct in me that even in their up-andcoming phases would help me help him choose something my mother would love. I knew he was counting on me.

“What do you do with all your money then?”

On the day of, I sat by Dad’s side in the front seat of our old Chevy as the clock ticked towards Christmas Eve, apprehension flooding my chest. My mood would lift only when I thought about the after-shopping part, where we’d get to relax and share hot chocolate at the Peter Pan Diner, a small restaurant behind the Main Street stores. First, though. We needed to head for Genung’s. Hands down, Genung’s Department Store was the ritziest in town – so high-priced that we avoided it the rest of the year, Robert Halls and Woolworths filling the bill for us. But adding in the allure of a store label that was bound to impress, impressive Christmas sales and last-minute desperation made Genung’s the place to go to buy a gift for someone special. And there couldn’t have been anyone more special than Mom. In the car, Dad’s rich voice filled the air between us, his Irishtinged words never failing to highlight a humorous and unique take on life and child-rearing.

“I don’t have any money, Dad.”

“I don’t even have a job.” “What? I have a daughter who’s unemployed?” “I’m only nine.” “Nine? Well, all right, then you’re bound to be 10 next year. Next year you get a job and you’ll be able to pay for my hot chocolate.” “What kind of job?” “Vice President.” “But I’m a girl.” “So?” “Girls can’t be Vice President.” “Who said?” Pause. “Dad? Why only Vice President?” “That’s my girl.”

“Hands down, Genung’s Department Store was the ritziest in town – so high-priced that we avoided it the rest of the year, Robert Halls and Woolworths filling the bill for us.” 18

Sometimes he’d hum along with the radio. “White Christmas”… “Jingle Bells”… anything. Always cheerful, always off-key. And in between the banter and the music, he’d never forget to mention how proud he was of his only daughter. Before long, we’d be parking the car. I’ll never forget how Dad always opened the door to Genung’s for me as if I were a real lady instead of a scrawny kid. Inside, the store would be aglow with fancy ornaments hanging above our heads, dangling from brilliant strands of sparkling silver garland. It seemed to me that every saleswoman wore red nail polish, a suit with a sparkly pin, and a weary smile. “May I help you, sir,” They’d ask my Dad, as we passed from one department to another. “No thank you, young lady,” he’d answer, no matter the woman’s age. “Though if we need your help, we’ll give you a holler.” In the ladies’ outerwear section, we’d usually have some measure of success, but one particular year, the leftover coats were all either too big or too small. We plowed through each rack for what seemed like forever until Dad finally called out, his eyes glassy with hope, “Here’s one your mother’s size! What do you think?” “Wow.” I said, taking it from him with great difficulty. “It’s very red and very heavy.” “No good?”

Finally, Dad blushed and mumbled. “Let’s go over to the sleepwear and look at some ladies’ things, stockings maybe?” “Okay.” I said right away, knowing how much easier it had been for him to discuss coats. Thankfully, we hit the jackpot soon after with a nightgown and bathrobe in blue, Mom’s favorite color and her precise size, together with five pairs of nylons. I knew she’d like her gifts and that was all that mattered. That and the hot chocolate. And so it was that about two days before Christmas every year as a young girl, I had a date with my father at the Peter Pan Diner. It was just a small place behind a store called Genung’s where we’d shop at the last minute for my mother. Inside would be excited voices, smiling faces and standing room only. The air would be filled with cigarette smoke, frying food smells and music from a transistor radio… “Jingle Bells,” “Away in a Manger,” “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” Sometimes Dad and I would sit side by side on stools. Sometimes we’d be lucky enough to get a small booth. There’d be colored lights strung along the frosty windows and in my mind’s eye anyway, snow was always falling. We’d talk and laugh, Christmas as close by as our cups of steaming chocolate. And despite the crowds and the noise, for every minute that Dad and I sat together inside that tiny space and time, we were the only two people in the whole wide world.

My mind conjured up the image of my short conservative mom hefting its cardinal redness out of the box on Christmas morning, tipping backwards onto the floor with the weight of it, and it was hard not to smile. I waited for his comment, the muscles of my face twitching. “It is very red, isn’t it?” He said, grinning. We looked through the rack again, but nothing. My angst returned with a vengeance, the store growing warm… the situation hopeless. I worried that by the time we found something to buy, the diner would be closed. And the best part of the night would be gone.

“ t’s the most wonderful time of the year,” my seven-year-old son,

the same number of toys on each list, but no duplicate items. He brought them to me, clearly excited about his carefully crafted lists.

I sighed. I love Christmas. I do. It’s wonderful and cozy and it brings families together. It’s a chance to show the people we love how we really feel about them. But it’s also busy, bordering on chaotic. My “To Do List” is longer during the month of December than at any other time of the year.

I’d set them by the computer. “I’ll send them to your Grandmas tomorrow morning,” I told him. The next morning, I scanned the three lists into the computer. And then I emailed the exact same list to each Grandma. (I don’t know how it happened, except to say it was early and I hadn’t had coffee yet.)

But I really do love Christmas. One evening in early December, I flopped down on the couch next to my husband, Eric. I’d spent all day decorating the house for the season and I was tired.

Worse still, I didn’t realize the mistake until the Grandmas started texting me pictures of the toys they’d purchased. Three Star Wars light sabers – even in the same color. Three identical Star Wars Lego sets. Three of the same video game. Three of everything he’d asked for on one list. And nothing on the other two lists.

“The tree looks great, Honey,” Eric said.

And it was all my fault.

“Thanks. It’s a shame it will only be up for three weeks before I have to spend another whole day taking it all down again.” I shrugged. “It’s pretty, but sometimes, I wonder if it’s worth all of the effort.”

“I was so careful,” I moaned to Eric. “How can I tell the Grandmas that two of them have to return all of the toys they just bought? And how do I choose which two to tell?”

He smirked. “I told you last year that it’s okay with me if we don’t decorate. I know it’s a lot of work.”

“I’m sorry, Honey,” he said. “But I’m sure they’ll understand. Mistakes happen.”

I looked around the house, loving the cozy feel the decorations provided. “I can’t stop decorating for Christmas,” I said. “Think of how upset the kids would be.”

“What mistake?” Nathan said.

Nathan, sang with a huge grin.

His smirk grew bigger. “Oh yes, it’s all for the kids.” I nudged him with my elbow. “Okay, I admit it. I love it too.” But the next day, I was not loving it quite as much. I had a long list of other Christmas-related tasks, and nothing was going right. The previous week, I’d sent my kids’ “Wish Lists” to my mom, my mother-in-law, and my former mother-in-law, who was still very much a part of our family. I’d been careful to monitor Nathan’s lists to ensure that he didn’t ask more than one Grandma for the same toy. I’d told him to make three separate lists, one for each Grandma. He’d done a great job, creating the lists with about

We talked to the Grandmas, who all agreed that Nathan’s selfless decision should be commended. And my careless, early morning emailing should be forgiven. The grandmas kindly understood that I’d sent the lists before being properly caffeinated. (Lovely ladies, they are!) It’s true that Christmas is the busiest time of the year. But no doubt, it’s also the best. Especially when our kids remind us that it’s not about the decorations we put up, the gifts we receive, or even the food we enjoy. It’s about loving one another. It’s about thinking of others ahead of ourselves. Christmas is about giving to others to show them they are important to us. Even when the giver is a seven-year-old little boy and the gift is a Star Wars light saber. And the recipient is another child. A stranger whose only gift this Christmas might be that duplicate toy. It’s the best mistake I’ve ever made.

Finding the Greatest Gift Ever by Jeffery Cohen

hen I was seven years old, I thought the greatest gift I could ever receive was the Zorro hand puppet in the window of a local department store. Each time my mother and I passed that display I made it clear that my life depended on owning the tiny replica of the TV hero as my tiny finger slashed an invisible ‘Z’ in the air. After weeks of begging that seemed to fall on deaf ears, I started searching for empty soda bottles and collecting their two cent deposits. It took almost a month before I had enough pennies saved to buy the dollar puppet. My mother grudgingly escorted me to the store where I proudly laid out my pile of coins and swooped up my new treasure. As we exited the store, my mom looked down at me and said, “When your father isn’t working in the winter and we’re starving, you can eat that Zorro puppet.” In an instant, the greatest gift one could ever receive changed into some sort of evil demon that would put our whole family out in the street in the dead of winter. I think I played with Zorro once, and then shamefully hid him away in the back of my closet. When I was eight years old my father took me downtown to shop for a Christmas gift for my mother. I wandered up and down the aisles of the shops on Main Street, sniffing from bottles of perfume, sampling sweets, eyeing lace handkerchiefs, and then I saw it! The greatest gift ever! There on the counter of the costume jewelry department was a pair of molded medal earrings shaped like conga drums and maracas, painted gold and turquoise and pink. “These are beautiful,” I sighed. “And they’re only ninety-nine cents.” Just the amount of coins I happened to have in my pocket. My father shook his head. “They’re cheesy looking,” he reasoned. Cheesy or not, I knew they were the greatest gift I could ever give my mother, even if my father didn’t. When my mother unwrapped my gift on Christmas morning there were tears in her eyes. My mother wore that gaudy pair of earrings with pride, looking as regal as a Latina queen, even though she was actually of Slovakian descent.

a jaunty beret. I can still remember the blank look on my truck driver father’s face when he opened the box. He did his best to act appreciative, but I think he wore that cap as many times as he wore the ties I had given him in the past. When I was thirteen I got my first job delivering newspapers. With more than fifty customers I was raking in real money – paper money. I had saved more money to spend on Christmas gifts than I’d ever had before. As Christmas approached, I gathered up my bankroll and caught a bus to Newark, New Jersey, where monster-sized department stores lined both sides of the main street. My eyes grew wide as I raced from store to store, from floor to floor, sale to sale, on a wild shopping spree. I bought bottles of sweet smelling colognes, pairs of fuzzy slippers, scarves, cheese boards, coffee mugs, a shaving kit, and a jewelry box. For one brother I got Golferino, an entire golf course of molded plastic equipped with a mechanical man to sink putts. My other brother got Robot Commando, an actual plastic robot that was all the rage, standing two feet tall and responding to verbal commands! I dragged so many bags and boxes onto the bus that day that the bus driver nearly refused to pick me up. On Christmas morning I proudly paraded a bevy of wrapped boxes and bags out to the Christmas tree. I can still recall the joy I felt watching my family ooh and aah as they unwrapped those gifts. In an instant, I realized just what the greatest gift actually is – it is not in the getting. The greatest gift is in the giving.

At ten years old I decided to buy my father something really different for his birthday, instead of the usual tie that he never wore anyway. I remembered that Dad liked to draw when he was young and, in fact, he almost went to art school, so I decided to get him what every artist needed. Not a canvas and paints, or charcoal and a sketch pad. What I guessed he really needed to bring out those rare artistic talents was...a beret! I broke my piggy bank and gathered up enough coins to purchase

y flea market Sundays are dwindling, I thought as I forced myself out of bed to get an early start. I pulled a thick sweater over my head, and debated adding a hooded sweatshirt. I looked forward to my weekly visits to the land of discarded “stuff,” unique restorations and a trove of unexpected treasures. That and an old fashioned diner breakfast guaranteed a fun trip despite the cold weather. It could be my last chance before Christmas to find the elusive good bones of a “wanna be” treasure that could be magically transformed into a mind-blowing and creatively satisfying gift. Of course, I won’t hold my breath. I no longer made the painstaking, love-filled creations that I used to walk ten miles through two feet of snow and labored forever to create. Well, let’s just say my heart was in the right place, but my choices were not always on target. In the past, my projects (usually triggered by a magazine photo or a ridiculously expensive store display) were received with mixed reviews. I mean, who didn’t want a burst of sunshine on their wall – a mirror in a lemon yellow frame with so many layers of high gloss polyurethane, you could see your reflection in the paint. Surely, it would blend into any décor (sigh). It had looked so sophisticated in the high-end catalog. At some point, I had a Dr. Phil moment and realized a gift that was wanted or needed was more appreciated than a hand-painted set of wine glasses. I started giving checks and socks, instead of creative endeavors that would be stored in the attic. But, here I was, scouring the aisles of The Elephant Trunk trying, once again, to find the framework of a potential da Vinci. Halfway through the maze of vendors, I saw something that piqued my interest. A six foot piece of weathered barn board with the words “The Enchanted Forest” sprawled across it was balanced on a pull wagon. The shimmer of the chipped blue font in the November sun suggested

a glitter finish. The new owner of the sign had a head of silver hair and a salt and pepper beard that rivaled the paint’s sparkle. I stopped him. “I love your sign. What are you going to do with it? You’re not going to paint over it are you?” “Oh no,” he said, smiling. It’s for my granddaughter. She and her parents will be away the week before Christmas. I will have one week to turn her bedroom into The Enchanted Forest. I can’t believe I found this sign. I’m going to build her a tree bed and hang those blinking white lights all over her room. “Twinkling lights,” I said, “like fireflies.” “Exactly!” he agreed with an excitement I understood. “In aisle two there’s a vendor who has battery operated lanterns you could hang from branches,” I told him. I had considered buying them, but this man had a plan. “And, there are a couple of log stools over there.” I pointed at the child-sized chairs with exposed tree rings. We brainstormed as he loaded up his wagon with treasures. He had the perfect gift. I was envious. As we parted, my creative cells bubbled under the surface of my skin. There was something here, and I was going to find it. *** I poured the contents of the three plastic storage boxes on the floor. I heard my husband groan. “You have enough Christmas decorations to decorate the entire neighborhood. Why would you buy more?” “I’m making a gift,” “I thought you were done with that,” he said skeptically and closed the door.

I began sorting the piles. In the first box, I put the miniature metal and wooden figurines (scenery from lost train sets): skaters, children throwing a snow ball or pulling a sled, carolers with their mouths frozen in a perfect “O.” There were tiny trees, hearts and Christmas wreaths. I added pine boxes and frames in different sizes and shapes that could be adorned with all the finery. In the second box, I arranged the glue, scissors, paint, brushes, pipe cleaners and glitter –Michael’s (craft store) would be impressed. What I didn’t buy at the flea market was supplemented by my own ample supply. The third box was special. I wrapped the holiday dessert plates and tea cups (enough for our family and an unexpected friend or two). I chuckled when I picked up the ceramic berry cups flanked by the bright green frogs. Addie and Mila will love them. I added a hand-drawn picture recipe card. I could imagine Addie explaining the assembly instructions for the applesauce/graham cracker Christmas cake to her younger cousin. There was everything two little girls and their grandmother would need for a holiday tea and a lesson in giving. *** I put the covers on the containers and sat back to contemplate this masterpiece. It was brilliant, really: three boxes of ordinary junk to be transformed into declarations of love by little hands and treasured for a lifetime. Broken items seen through new eyes will be transformed into unique tributes to their parents. I closed my own eyes. I could see the red and green cake – messy, lopsided and sweeter than a sugar-laden bakery confection – served with pride and swipes of missing frosting. There might be a broken cup or a stained dress, but on this day, it won’t matter. This family gift will be a celebration of life’s imperfections, love and the treasures of the heart. No return receipt or storage space needed.

Making the Holidays (and Every Day) Easier by Abbie Reece

chocolate and play board games – all of us love UNO. I’m originally from Ohio, but my parents live here, right across the street, so we go back and forth a lot. We exchange gifts on Christmas Eve, but on Christmas Day we have an early dinner at my parents’ home. Mom does the main dish, but I make several side dishes. Both boys grab a dish and we all parade across the street – it’s hilarious to see! Another of my favorite traditions is hosting a holiday potluck for my work family and friends. Everyone brings their favorite dish, and we eat, listen to music and enjoy spending time together. Fortunately, being in the plumbing business makes my life a lot easier. My kitchen is equipped with a Kohler, Chef Inspired Stages sink. This sink is amazing – it’s 45 inches across, has a Wet Works surface for my prep work, six porcelain prep bowls and a stainless steel storage rack. This sink has changed the way I cook.

hristmas always means a good time for me and my family. While I don’t do a lot of decorating, I do put up a tree – my tree from last year never came down! It’s in a den we don’t use a lot, and because I didn’t put it up until late in the season, we decided to leave it up to enjoy all year. (Don’t judge, we love Christmas!)

My favorite part of the holidays is being home with my two sons, 18 and 12 – my 18 year old works with me at Gateway Supply in the warehouse. Life is a little crazy living with two boys and two dogs. My 12 year old is in 7th grade and plays the saxophone in the school band. One of the dogs is a 120 pound Rottweiler – he’s a big teddy bear, but hates the sound of the saxophone. When the horn starts playing, the dog starts barking! It’s wild, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I take a week off around Christmas, and we spend the week doing all the traditional Christmas activities. We bake cookies, see movies, drink hot

The author stresses that each of these people did something remarkable, no matter their age, gender, sexuality, or religion. They all found their passion and stuck with it, no matter the obstacles that stood in their way.

Shellie Rabon: A Stay-at-Home Mom with a Dream by Leslie Moore

When I mailed my application in, I wrote them a note and told them I knew it wasn’t perfect, but I was a stay-at-home mom with a dream.” Along with her half dozen regular volunteers, Shellie is planning a trip to Hendersonville, North Carolina, in January for 25-30 kids. “They’ll get to hike, go snow tubing, and see waterfalls,” Shellie told me. “Most of the children we serve are older. The younger children are generally placed in foster homes and eventually adopted. But, the older kids get left behind until they age out at 18.” I asked Shellie what her current needs are and she said, “Since these are older kids, we don’t buy toys at Christmas. We’re trying to make sure they all have a warm jacket, boots, gloves and hats for our trip.” She also said snacks are always appreciated. “We do hot chocolate bars with peppermint sticks, and the kids love it.”

“I’m also available to speak to your service group,” Shellie began. “There are so many children in our community that need help.” Currently the organization serves about 65 children a year.

n high school, Shellie Rabon always dreamed of adopting a child that needed her. But, she ended up marrying a man who wanted at least ten children of his own. “Soon after we married, I found out I had a medical issue and was told if I was going to have children, I needed to have them right then. During my pregnancy with Caleb, my first son, I nearly lost him. Thank goodness, he’s a happy healthy 12-year-old now.” Shellie never forgot about the children she was going to adopt. She was playing with Caleb one day and decided she would visit a group home to see if she could help. “It was July and beautiful outside. There were about 30 children sitting around inside. I asked the director why these kids weren’t out doing something, and he told me there were no volunteers or funds for activities – so they just sat around all day.”

This all-volunteer organization has one big fundraiser each year and several smaller ones. Shellie also writes grants. But, the need is always larger than the funding. “I’m working on helping the kids that age out at 18. We provide a laptop for those that go on to college, but haven’t been able to help with transportation. One young man aged out, works two jobs and is trying so hard, but he can’t save enough money to buy a car. It’s tough out there.” Shellie continued, saying she has gotten a lot of support from the community. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this for 11 years without the support of many businesses and individuals.” Consider a gift to Caleb’s Dragonfly Dreams this holiday season. That was the beginning of Caleb’s Dragonfly Dreams, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that organizes events and activities for abused, abandoned and neglected children living in group homes in Horry and Georgetown Counties. For the past 11 years, Shellie and her volunteers have taken children on trips, provided birthday gifts, Christmas gifts and activities. Her organization gives back a little of the childhood that was taken from many living in local group and residential homes. “I took a group of kids to Dixie Stampede for my first outing. I had worked there and still knew people who were willing to help. I was hooked.” Shellie went on to complete the paperwork for the organization’s 501 (c)(3) status with little to no help. “Attorneys charge about $600 to do the non-profit paperwork, and I knew I could do a lot of good with that

For New Year’s Eve you’ll want to take it up a notch and wear something that sparkles and glitters. Whether it’s your shoes, your jewelry, your bag or your dress, just make sure you start the new year with a little light, a little sparkle. No matter where I am for New Year’s Eve, I’ll find a soiree to attend. My business partner, Sonya and I both put our careers on hold to stay at home with our children, but knew we wanted to go back to work doing something we truly love. My son is now 13 and my daughter is 7 – I knew it was time. Sonya and I don’t have retail backgrounds, but felt there was a need for a real, hands-on boutique in the Grand Strand area. And I have always loved to shop where I’m given personalized service. A true boutique should give you the feeling you’ve walked into someone’s living room to shop with a try-on session. Because we’re both natives – I was raised in North Myrtle Beach – and because we’re here, watching trends and seeing opportunities, we felt this was the perfect time to open a Monkee’s. Don’t Eat My Apple Bites! “

on’t you eat my apple bites!” Mammie hollered, referring to her most favorite treat sold in stores. For years, apple bites have been a staple on her grocery list. She enjoyed one per day with her morning coffee, and sometimes she shared. I joked that I was going to eat them all. We both laughed, I hugged her, told her I loved her, and headed out the door. That was my last conversation with my grandmother. She passed away one week later, suddenly but peacefully. And though we were all deeply saddened, Mammie’s children and grandchildren came together to remember her in a way that was authentic and true to her life. Several of my cousins sang beautiful hymns she had requested months earlier, and many of us shared stories. Although there were many heartfelt and touching moments, it wasn’t a typical funeral service. But Mammie wasn’t exactly a “typical” grandmother. Mammie had four children, ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Somehow, she managed to maintain unique relationships with all of us, which was not an easy feat. She knew our likes and dislikes, frequently prepared our favorite foods and shared private jokes with us. Naturally, many of those stories were shared at her service. We talked about how much we would miss her fudge, her chicken rice soup, and her homemade meatloaf. We shared stories about her favorite sports teams, beach and mountain vacations, and her favorite TV shows. Nearly everyone’s story had an element of humor in it. And while it certainly was not meant to be a comedy show, it would have been unfair to not address that part of Mammie’s life. She had a hilarious personality, and she loved to laugh. My cousin, Brandon, approached the pulpit for his turn to honor Mammie. He cleared his throat and began reading from his phone. “By now you have probably heard about how much Mammie loved her doll babies,” he said. (Mammie referred to all of her grands and greatgrands as doll babies.) “What you may not know is how diverse her doll babies are. There are doll babies who inspire through writing, through teaching, and through singing.”

The congregation laughed a bit louder. “I am, however, the doll baby with a unique nickname Mammie gave me that has stuck throughout the years and will continue for generations. There are so many things I will miss about you: your laugh, your smile, waking up to thirty facebook notifications, and your ability to bring the family together. But most of all, I will miss your inappropriate advice... which I cannot share in church.” Then, to illustrate Mammie’s nickname for him, Brandon leaned toward the microphone and made a raspberry sound with his mouth that echoed throughout the sanctuary. The entire congregation erupted into laughter. The preacher wore a shocked expression, and I’m pretty sure that church will never be the same again. In the end, we honored her in a way that we felt would truly have made her proud. We could have kept the service somber, but it wouldn’t have felt right for Mammie. Since her death, I have thought a lot about my last visit with her and replayed our conversation in my mind. At first I wished we had talked about something more meaningful that day. I could have told her again how much I loved her. I could have thanked her for supporting me throughout the years and for always encouraging me and helping me feel better about myself. We had said all of that before, though. I knew she loved me, and she knew how much she was loved by every single member of her family. And though I will always long for one more conversation, our last one was representative of our relationship: one of laughter and love. What more could a person ask for? Aside from another apple bite, of course.

Brandon took a long pause. “I am none of those doll babies, which is why I was not asked to sing today.” Everyone chuckled. “There are doll babies who are kind and gentle to animals, and there are doll babies who are skilled in hunting and fishing,” he continued. “Again, I am not any of those doll babies.”
