Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach, the Queen of the Grand Strand, is a coveted destination that calls visitors back year after year. Beautiful, sandy beaches are certainly the star in her crown, but visitors will find fabulous shopping, a dizzying array of entertainment and, of course, delicious and diverse dining on every corner. This town truly has it all. Families began vacationing in Myrtle Beach more than a century ago, traveling by horse, buggy and ferry to spend a day in the sand and sun on the mostly unoccupied beach. Our city has been known by several different names throughout its history. It was first called “Chicora,” or land, by Native American residents. Later settlers named the area “New Town.” It was eventually named Myrtle Beach after the wax myrtle shrub common to the area.
Today, Myrtle Beach is one of the most visited beaches on the East Coast and offers something for everyone, attracting nearly 14 million visitors each year. In the following pages, we’ve brought together some of our favorite spots to shop, dine and have fun.
No matter what you love to do, we’re sure you’ll find it in Myrtle Beach!
Ready, Set . . .
Shop!
A Myrtle Beach vacation will leave visitors with wonderful memories, but it’s always fun to take home a few items. Be sure and stop at the Gay Dolphin (ad on pg 13) on Ocean Boulevard, one block south of the SkyWheel. Family owned since 1946, this is much more than a gift shop, this store is a destination with more than 70,000 items in 30,000 square feet of retail space! With 15 locations, you will not have any problem finding Bargain Beachwear (ad on pgs 24-25). With some of the best collections AND prices, this is a must visit for sure. From great jewelry to the latest in sunglass fashions to tee shirts to swimwear for the entire family, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for here! The only problem with shopping in Myrtle Beach is deciding where to go first! Broadway at the Beach is a fun destination that has unique shopping, plus dining and entertainment. Tsunami Surf Shop (ad on pg 4) specializes in high end men’s, women’s and children’s surf shop fashions and accessories.
Bargain hunters alert! Tanger Outlets has two locations in Myrtle Beach, one on Highway 501 and one on the north end of the beach. With markdowns galore and designer fashions at discount prices, this shopper’s paradise will satisfy even the savviest price watchers. Be sure to visit Lenox while you’re there! There are two malls in Myrtle Beach – Coastal Grand is on Highway 17 Business near the intersection of Highway 501, and The Myrtle Beach Mall is on Highway 17 on the north end of the beach. While you’re on the northern end of Myrtle Beach, stop by Barefoot Landing. Another destination shopping experience, it sits on the Intracoastal Waterway and includes a 27 acre lake. The Market Common is urban shopping and dining at its best. Stores you recognize, like Pottery Barn, Centro Shoes and Chico’s, are mixed with unique one-of-akind boutiques. While you’re there, pick up a few things at Market Common’s Piggy Wiggly grocery store! (ad on pg 5.)

The Great Outdoors (and Indoors!) Grab that new bathing suit or tee shirt and shorts and get outside! There is so much to do in Myrtle Beach’s great outdoors – and we’ve added a few indoor suggestions to consider when you need a break from the heat! Sand and Surf Our beaches are some of the best in the world, and enjoying them is THE reason to visit Myrtle Beach. Along Ocean Boulevard are signs for public beach access points – Myrtle Beach has 42 public access points in total. Some offer parking, and parking meters are in place from March 1 – October 30. Beach wheelchairs are available at no cost on a first come, first serve basis.
Call 843-918-1382 and the chair will be delivered to your site by a community service officer. All beaches are patrolled by area police for safety, and rules are strictly enforced. Check with your lifeguard if you are not sure about any of our rules and regulations. Enjoy your days on the beach and don’t forget your sunscreen! Beach umbrellas and chairs are available for rent through your lifeguard. For a more back-to-nature beach experience, visit Myrtle Beach State Park. Located on the south end of the beach, it features beautiful beaches, a fishing pier, public restrooms, plenty of parking along with nature trails and interesting nature programs for children. Fishing rods, bait and free instruction from the locals is available is you feel like wetting a line! Continued on page 18.
Thrilling Outdoor Watersports
Of course, when you come to Myrtle Beach, you want to spend time in the water! On the beach at 3rd Avenue South, Ocean Watersports (see ad on page 17) has so many ways to have fun and get wet! The most experienced parasailing outfit on the Grand Strand, Ocean Watersports has been serving satisfied customers since 1981. Captain David Sage, the founder of Ocean Watersports is one of the most experienced parasailers in the world and has been sailing and piloting a variety of craft on the Atlantic for 35 years. His highly trained crew is friendly and knowledgeable – making sure your experience is safe and fun! If you have never parasailed, now is the time – this exciting watersport combines the thrills of acceleration and altitude with the scenic views of the Grand Strand. You’ll start with a banana boat ride out to the parasail boat, then you can sit back, relax and enjoy. There is no training
necessary, the skilled captains and crew of Ocean Watersports will handle everything! They will even take high quality, digital photos of your flight – what a great souvenir! Maybe you would rather stay on the water? Take a ride on a banana boat! The double banana does not tip while the single banana requires more balance, but it has been one of Ocean Watersports customer favorites for years. Combining the thrill of the Jet Ski with a little more padding, your banana boat ride will take you about two miles up the coast of the Grand Strand, providing a spectacular view of the area. Get out on your own! Rent a Jet Ski and satisfy your need for speed! You and a friend can ride out on the ocean for a half or full hour! Or, if you’d rather not pilot a craft, take a FAST ride on the Jetboat with experienced captains giving you the ultimate thrill!

More Great Outdoors (and Indoors!) Hiking and Bike Trails If you’re ready to get your sweat on, head to Horry County Bike and Run Park (843-915-5330). Also known as “The Hulk,” the single track mountain bike and running trail starts out with a 30 foot hill climb, and then takes on characteristics of a wooden roller coaster for three fourths of the trail. With a few tight twisty sections, several switchbacks, small hill climbs, ditch digs, dramatic drops, field laps and possible speeds up to 20 mph, this is the closest thing to real mountain biking and trail running that Myrtle Beach has to offer. It truly surprises everyone. If you like your time outdoors to be a bit more leisurely, the East Coast Greenway has a section in Myrtle Beach that crosses Highway 31 near Carolina Forest. Runners, walkers and cyclists will enjoy this safe and lovely route. Myrtle Beach State Park is also a fun place to walk and hike. Rangers can help you plan your route! The Market Common also has wonderful outdoor spaces to play. Check out the fantastic two mile paved walking and bicycling trail that overlooks the area’s lake and recreational fields. Fun on Land If you just don’t feel like getting wet today, head to Broadway Grand Prix (see ad on page 19). Located across from Broadway at the Beach, the kids (and adults) will all get excited about seven go-kart tracks, two 18-hole mini-golf courses and an arcade when you need to go inside and cool off! New in 2016, The Track (9589 N. Kings H w y. ) offers
multi-level go-kart tracks and much more! Imagination rules at Build-A-Bear (see ad on page 47)! Located in Broadway at the Beach, the kids in your group will love creating their own masterpiece. Create, play and have fun with your chil- dren! Broadway at the Beach is also the home of some of the thrill rides that once were at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion, or you can venture south to experience the Swamp Fox roller coaster, one of 37 rides at the Family Kingdom Amusement Park. The Swamp Fox, a wooden roller coaster, has been a landmark in Myrtle Beach since 1966 and reaches speeds of up to 50 MPH! Locals and visitors alike love strolling on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Opened in 2010, the 1.2 mile oceanfront Myrtle Beach boardwalk is filled with activity, from live music to restaurants and even thrilling rides and attractions, like the SkyWheel, that takes you 200 feet in the air for a scenic ride you’ll never forget! You’ll experience a meandering oceanfront park on the southernmost end and the thrills and excitement increase as you make your way north. Check for summer entertainment from strolling jugglers to a family-friendly Kids Carnival.

There is so much to do after dark in Myrtle Beach! Theaters abound, with a huge variety of entertainment. Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament (see ad on page 3) takes you back to an age of bravery and honor, as you witness epic battles of steel and steed. As the battle rages, you’ll be served a four-course dinner fit for royalty. Medieval Times’ noble guests feast on garlic bread, tomato bisque soup, roasted chicken, sweet buttered corn, herb-basted potatoes, the pastry of the Castle, coffee and two rounds of select beverages.

Pirate’s Voyage Dinner and Show offers a swash buckling adventure, complete with dinner. Join Captain Blackbeard, the most famous pirate to ever sail the seven seas, and his quartermaster Calico Jack as they lead the Crimson and Sapphire crews in an epic battle for lost treasure on land, on deck, in water and high above full-sized pirate ships in a 15 foot deep indoor hideaway lagoon.
The Bowery, on Ocean Boulevard, has provided entertainment to generations of locals and visitors, and is always jumping in the summer months. Bourbon Street Bar and Grill is a locals’ favorite with live music and a great bar menu that is served late into the night.
If you love Elvis Presley and other tributes to great performers, Legends in Concert is for you. The South End The southern end of the Grand Strand encompasses several smaller communities and one historic city. Surfside, Garden City, Murrells Inlet, Litchfield, Pawleys Island and Georgetown are all unique communities with a shared, laid back lifestyle drawing visitors who enjoy a slower pace.
The Town of Surfside Beach is a small beach town that is big on families, with wide clean beaches, beautiful public parks and a true hometown feel. Moving south to Garden City, you’re straddling the Georgetown County line. A fun fishing pier, arcade and live music nightly in the summer all give visitor’s the perfect beach vacation. The pace slows down as you make your way into Murrells Inlet. Known for its many delicious seafood restaurants, Murrells Inlet also boasts the Marshwalk, a gorgeous waterfront boardwalk to stroll and enjoy the expansive view.
People who vacation in Litchfield and Pawleys Island are intensely loyal to their annual getaway. Summer home of Georgetown County’s wealthy rice planters in the 18th and 19th centuries, today Pawleys Island draws people from across the nation who come to enjoy it’s beauty and peace. The small town of Georgetown is the third oldest in the state. The picturesque, waterfront Harborwalk is lined with fun shops and restaurants, and history buffs love the tours of the historic district, featuring antebellum homes meticulously restored.
Over the next few pages, you’ll find lots of ideas and suggestions for your perfect vacation on the south end. Please let us know what you decide to do!

Silver and Tablecloths Local chefs take pride in taking the freshest ingredients and creating culinary masterpieces. On the south end of the Strand, in Georgetown, Alfresco Bistro serves Northern Italian and Lowcountry cuisine along with a healthy dose of southern hospitality. A little farther north in Pawleys Island, Chive Blossom and Bistro 217, both small and locally-owned, have loyal followings, while Frank’s and Frank’s Outback (see ad on page 31) provide great food and a laid back, fun atmosphere. Austin’s Ocean One, an ocean front fine dining restaurant in Litchfield has an award-winning chef plus floor to ceiling glass for picture perfect views of the Atlantic. Diners looking for good service and haute cuisine will find many options in Myrtle Beach. The farm-to-table movement has become very popular here, with chefs choosing locally raised meats and vegetables, and occasionally even serving meals at the farms on tables set up in the fields. Croissants Bistro & Bakery uses only fresh local ingredients to prepare their European-style cuisine. Creating a culinary masterpiece is an art, and Collector’s Café combines culinary art with some of the area’s best visual artists’ work for a unique dining experience. Ciao! Italian Restaurant, another Myrtle Beach local’s favorite, pairs delicious, expertly prepared food with the perfect wine for a memorable meal. Our area has almost endless options for fine dining that will please even the most discriminating palate.
Relax; enjoy a glass of wine and an evening of world class cuisine!

An Adventure to Remember
From basking to strolling to running, from paddling to swimming to motoring, there is a lot to do outside on the south end. We’ve put together some tried and true favorites, plus a few surprises, for you to sample.
The beaches on the south end are quieter and less crowded, inviting leisurely strolls to find that perfect shell. Surfside Beach, known as “The Family Beach,” is the only non-smoking beach in the area and public beach accesses have parking, but you’ll have to use paid parking meters. The Surfside Pier provides a fun walk that becomes very exciting when a fisherman reels in the big one!
While you’re in Surfside, make time for a full or half day at Wild Water and Wheels (see ad on page 15). So much more than a waterpark, there is mini-golf, bumper boats, go-karts and kiddie rides – plus the area’s most exciting waterpark! After a day in the water, pick up a pizza at Papa John’s! There are six locations along the Grand Strand. Garden City is situated in both Horry and Georgetown Counties, and we suggest a beach day on the Georgetown County end. Kids young and old love the Garden City Pier and surrounding area. Live music plays each night in the summer on both ends of the pier, and the arcades provide the perfect beach entertainment. Stroll the Marshwalk in Murrells Inlet, and see pelicans waiting for morsels from incoming fishing boats. The wide expanse of salt marsh is home to many varieties of shore birds and other wildlife. Crazy Sisters Marina offers deep sea fishing tours, Jet Ski rentals, parasailing and more. Farther south, Huntington Beach State Park is a paradise for outdoorsmen and women. In addition to gorgeous beaches, weekly kayaking trips give leisurely views of the marshes, and the area is a mecca for bird watchers. Continued on page 34.
Explore Atalaya while you’re at Huntington Beach State Park, the former home of Anna and Archer Huntington, and a popular site for weddings. Have you ever seen an alligator in the wild? This is the place to find one – the salt and fresh water marshes are home to a wide variety of wildlife, alligators included! Brookgreen Gardens (See ad on pg. 33) is known as one of the most beautiful outdoor museums in the country, and well worth a visit. Walking through the beautiful gardens and seeing the amazing sculptures is an experience you should definitely put on the to-do list.
Litchfield Beach has wide sandy shores and plenty of public access. Parking rules are strictly enforced, but parking is free. PawleysKayak.com has kayaks, stand up paddleboards, canoes and more for rent for the adventurous beachgoer. The rental price includes delivery and pickup. In Pawleys Island, call Surf the Earth (843-235-3500), and learn to surf or paddleboard. They also offer a variety of ecotours including a Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga Tour! Parking regulations in Pawleys Island are also very strictly enforced, but public parking is free. One of the best kept secrets on the south end is Hobcaw Barony, where visitors can take tours rich in southern history and wildlife conservation. In Georgetown, several boat tours are available. See a lighthouse and find some wonderful shells or learn about the rice plantations that made Georgetown County wealthy before the Civil War. Whatever you choose, spending the day outdoors on the south end will leave you wanting more – and probably leave you hungry as well – check out our dining selections on page 30!

Small Shops,
Big Finds!
Along with beach wear and fun souvenirs, boutiques with finds that “wow” you are an exciting part of the shopping experience on the south end. Read on for your personal guide to shopping from Surfside to Georgetown! Highway 17 Bypass in Surfside Beach has many chain stores that offer great shopping, but for something unique, venture down to 17 Business and stop in Old Time Pottery (see ad pg 48) for bargains on everything related to your home. Hudson’s Flea Market is just fun – there’s so much there, and it changes nearly every day! Tweaked, on Business 17 in Murrells Inlet is one of our favorite boutiques with fun home décor and jewelry. Pluff Mud is another Murrells Inlet fav and great for just about anything! For everything outdoors, stop by Murrells Inlet Outpost – they also offer charter fishing tours! The Litchfield and Pawleys Island area is filled with fun shops and boutiques – leave plenty of time to stop by a few of our favorites. Everyone loves The Hammock Shops Village (see ad pg 2). What started 75 years ago with the creation of those famous rope hammocks, has become a Pawleys Island landmark! With five restaurants and nearly two dozen shops, this is Pawleys Island’s destination shopping. Next is Sweetgrass Center, across from Fresh Market, and The Shops at Oak Lea after that – both are filled with unique, locally owned shops. Take 2 Resale is on the other side of Hwy. 17 and a must for those who love high end consignment stores. (Doesn’t everyone?) A little farther south, next to Bistro 217 is Talk of the Town, a wonderful new shop we love. Georgetown’s Front Street is a beautiful place to shop for everything from antiques to art and enjoy the river view on the Harborwalk. Doodlebugs has some of the cutest children’s clothing around, and you’ll find lots more to see while you’re there – Bienvenue is one of our favorite’s for gifts and home décor. If you have time, check out the Maritime Museum, their gift shop is filled with fascinating nautical items.
The North End Visitors along the northern end of the Grand Strand know they have found paradise – sparkling shores, beach music and enough memory-making, vacation fun to please every member of the family. From just north of the South Carolina border to Barefoot Landing, this section of the beach brings folks back year after year to enjoy shopping, great food, exciting nightlife and, of course, the beautiful, wide beaches.
Not Found Elsewhere Your mother-in-law needs a gift and don’t forget your BFF. And, of course, you need a few mementoes of your amazing vacation. The North End has lots of options. From funky boutiques in Sunset Beach like Bleu (720 Sunset Blvd. N.) and Blue Heron Gallery (1780-10A Chandlers Lane) to dazzling art at Sunset River Marketplace (10283 Beach Dr. SW) in Calabash, shops on the north end are filled with one of a kind finds. Family owned and operated, Callahan’s of Calabash (9973 Beach Dr SW) has satisfied loyal shoppers for 40 years. From home décor to gifts and apparel, you are nearly guaranteed to find something you just can’t live without. The same family owns Sea Island Trading Co. (720 Hwy. 17 N.) just across the border in Little River where Southern Belles or those who love them, can find designer clothing, jewelry and home furnishings! For everything beachwear and in between visit one of five locations of Beach Life Resortwear (see ad on pg. 47). The Great Outdoors You came TO the beach FOR the beach – sitting in a comfy sand chair under an umbrella and listening to the waves break on the shore – bliss! Locals love the Cherry Grove Fishing Pier for beach access and enjoying a walk on the pier, but parking fees apply! Between Cherry Grove and North Myrtle Beach you can find lots of free public parking and easy access to the shore. Crescent Beach and Windy Hill are both fun places to spend your beach day. But there is a lot more to do on the north end.
Quaint and lovely Little River offers half and full day charter fishing trips for the angler in the group. If you are visiting in May, the Blue Crab Festival (5/14 & 15) is an annual favorite. Play Tarzan for the day at Go Ape Zipline and Treetop Adventure! Thrill-seekers will find a day of adventure here, and they have recently added a Treetop Junior course for the younger crowd. If this is a little too much action, The North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex offers three hiking trails and lots of other outdoor activities. Music & Dancing No visit to The North End could be considered complete without a visit to Fat Harold’s Beach Club to watch the shaggers’ slide and twirl to the sounds of beach music – you could even take a few lessons! North Myrtle Beach also has free concerts on Main Street throughout the summer. Beginning in May, Music on Main concerts are held every Thursday at 7 pm. North Myrtle Beach is also the home of House of Blues – check and see who’s playing while you’re here. Off the Beaten Path Wine lovers alert! Duplin Winery’s vineyards are located in Rose Hill, North Carolina, but now the popular winery has opened a Tasting Station in North Myrtle Beach. Check their website, www. duplinwinery.com, for upcoming events and tastings.

Conway The city of Conway is one of the oldest in our state and is the county seat of Horry County. Founded in 1732 as the village of Kingston, today this small town, set along the banks of the Waccamaw River, 15 miles west of Myrtle Beach, is a picture perfect, small southern town. Main Street and the surrounding areas are where you want to begin. Beautiful trees line the picturesque streets and the shopping is fabulous! A city in love with art, there are galleries up and down the streets you’ll want to visit. Conway Glass, on Laurel Street, has beautiful hand-blown glass items, and you can even take classes in glass blowing! Grady’s Jewelers, also on Laurel Street, is one of the oldest jewelry stores in the area and is still owned and operated by the same family. While you’re in Conway, be sure to take a stroll on the Riverwalk. This scenic walk connects the Waccamaw River with the historic downtown business district. The trail begins under the Main Street bridge and ends at the beautiful riverfront park and marina complex. Stroll by historic buildings, the Conway Arboretum and a riverside gazebo provides a quiet place to enjoy the view. If you enjoy local theatre, Theatre of the Republic is known to be the best in the area. The old theatre on Main Street is enough to draw you in – the sign is a vintage dream. The Trestle Bakery and Café
French toast made with sourdough bread, a breakfast croissant featuring eggs, cheese and ham or bacon – these are just a couple of the delicious menu items at The Trestle. Plus, they have really good coffee.
