My Favorite Dish My favorite dish is Drunken Jack’s Grouper Royale. It is prepared by having a grouper filet either grilled or blackened. I prefer having it blackened as I feel the spices compliment the sweetness of the grouper and the crab, and sears in the juices. Once the grouper is cooked it is topped with jumbo lump crab, sautéed mushrooms, asparagus and finished with béarnaise sauce.

My favorite dish is Rustic Table’s Blackened Local Mahi over Crawfish and Sausage Dirty Grits, Wilted Spinach, Melted Tomato and Cider Brown Butter. This is an awesome dish because it uses local ingredients. It has a little bit of heat, a little bit of sweet, a little bit of crunch – many feelings and flavors that I love.

My favorite dish is “Palmetto Cheese, the Pimento Cheese with Soul!” Its birthplace is Pawleys Island, and it is such an easy addition to many recipes. Pimento Cheese is a summertime memory food for me. Either on sandwiches or celery, we always had it in our refrigerator. Protect the Endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle The official reptile of South Carolina averages 200-300 pounds and can grow up to 5 feet in length. Hammock Coast Beaches Beach Rules Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on all Hammock Coast beaches. Swimming is prohibited more than 50 yards from shore or more than chest deep. It is illegal to tamper with the dunes or cut, bend or destroy sea oats. Fireworks are prohibited on all Horry County beaches, and many beaches in Georgetown County are designated as fireworks-free. Most beaches allow dogs on leashes. Parking is limited, and rules are strictly enforced. In areas where parking is allowed, all four wheels must be off the pavement. Accessible ramps and boardwalks are located throughout Georgetown County, for the latest updates on beach rules and access visit www.georgetowncountysc.org

Beach Access Points Garden City Beach The northern, Horry County end has numerous public access locations near the Garden City Pier.

Public beach-access locations are also found off South Waccamaw Drive after the Horry/Georgetown County line. Huntington Beach State Park There is general access to three miles of remote beach. A large parking area is available as well as accessible restrooms and showers. One beach access point has a longer ramp for easier wheelchair access. First known for the many successful indigo plantations, Georgetown County became the richest area in the world through the production of Carolina Gold rice. The life of plantation owners was one of luxury and privilege, juxtaposed with the suffering of hundreds of enslaved Africans forced to complete the labor intensive cultivation of rice. The enslaved African-Americans of the plantation era developed their own unique culture, and the Gullah Geechee ways are kept alive by their descendants through delicious cuisine, beautiful art and a distinctive dialect. H A M M O C K C OAST LO CA LS Brendon Barber, a graduate of Michigan State University, is the Historic City of Georgetown’s first African-American mayor. He was elected to the office in 2017 after serving on City Council since 1998 and has devoted much of his adult life to the betterment of his community. A seventh generation Georgetonian, Barber and his wife Pamela are the parents of four children and seven grandchildren. Mayor Barber is practicing the real meaning of public service stating, “My job is to serve the citizens – not to be served. Our administration is looking forward to the future and to improving the lives of all of our citizens.”

Lovers of mystery will recognize the name Mickey Spillane (19182006). One of the world’s most popular writers of pulp fiction, Mickey Spillane made his home in Murrells Inlet and was a favorite of locals for his friendly good humor. Rock n Roll singer, Chubby Checker was born outside of the small town of Andrews, located in the west side of Georgetown County. The small town now calls itself “Home of Chubby Checker.” Another famous native of Andrews is comedian Chris Rock. His mother, Rose Rock, still makes her home near Georgetown. The beauty of the Hammock Coast attracts celebrities like Andie MacDowell and Cokie Roberts, both of whom have homes on Pawleys Island.

The Gullah Museum in Georgetown is a wonderful place to start learning about this interesting culture. Founded by Bunny and Andrew Rodrigues to promote and preserve Gullah culture, the museum uses Gullah and Low Country crafts, African artifacts and black collectibles to tell the story of the Gullah people and the part they played in the building of South Carolina and the United States.
