From pristine beaches to small-town beauty, South Carolina’s Hammock Coast has been beloved by generations who have found rest, respite and relaxation here. Six distinct areas make up the Hammock Coast – the beach communities of Pawleys Island, Litchfield, Murrells Inlet and Garden City and the historic towns of Georgetown and Andrews. Each has its own unique personality and lots of charm. With quiet, breathtakingly beautiful beaches, rivers filled with wildlife and unique sights and adventures, South Carolina’s Hammock Coast has long been a favorite and is well prepared to become a new must-visit destination for countless more. The third-oldest city in South Carolina, historic Georgetown has the charm of the old South combined with waterfront shopping and dining. The historic district boasts homes that hosted George Washington. In fact, Georgetown has 66 properties on the National Historic Register. (Pick up a walking tour guide at one of our Visitors Centers!) Eighteen miles inland, you will find the small town of Andrews and the Black River, a favorite of locals and visitors for boating and fishing. Garden City Beach, the northernmost point of the Hammock Coast, is a great spot for a family vacation or getaway. From swimming in the warm Atlantic to playing games in the arcade to strolling along the scenic, landmark pier, Garden City Beach offers countless opportunities to make your vacation unforgettable. Litchfield, Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet offer breathtaking beaches perfect for taking away the cares of everyday life. Southern Living named three Hammock Coast beaches, including Pawleys Island, to its list of best Palmetto State beaches! And, in 2020, Tripadvisor named Litchfield Beach, with its consistent 5-star reviews, the ninth-best beach in the USA! Shell hunters are amazed by the variety of offerings left on the shore of our beaches. Nearby, Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet invites campers and beachgoers to explore and unwind. Also, make sure you visit the Original Hammock Shop, located in “downtown Pawleys,” where rope hammocks are still made by hand, just as they have been since 1938. Swaying in a hammock is how we lovingly became known as the “Hammock Coast.” If you’re craving creek life, look no further than Murrells Inlet, known as the “Seafood Capital of South Carolina.” The delicious aroma of fresh seafood cooking will whet your appetite as you make your way down the beautiful MarshWalk and watch the pelicans and seagulls fish for their own dinner. Spend the day in Murrells Inlet, and rent a kayak or experience the thrill of parasailing over the beautiful water. There is always something new to experience. Whether you like your days filled with activities or would rather snooze on the sand, South Carolina’s Hammock Coast has your perfect vacation ready and waiting. There are so many opportunities for fun, adventure and exploration.

Protect the Loggerhead Sea Turtle

If you’re out on the beach early in the morning, you may see a SCUTE (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts) volunteer monitoring loggerhead sea turtle activity. The official reptile of South Carolina averages 200-300 pounds and can grow up to 5 feet in length. Even though these turtles are large in size, they are not large in numbers and are a threatened species. • Take your trash with you when you leave the beach each day. • Fill in your digs before you leave the beach. • Lights out on the beach after dark. • Do not disturb mama turtle if you see her on the beach.

For more information on the loggerhead sea turtle, contact SCUTE at (843) 237-9821 or (843) 235-8755.

FLOCK TO THE HAMMOCK COAST FOR THE BEST BIRDWATCHING

A flock of White Pelicans - Hobcaw Barony Photo by Mark A. Stevens

There are plenty of beachgoers who flock to South Carolina’s Hammock Coast, but there are other visitors – birds of a different feather, perhaps – who are just as keen to discover the avian wonders and beauty of our unspoiled area. Birdwatchers know that hundreds of bird species can be spotted along the beaches, marshes and tidal creeks of the Hammock Coast. From eagles and woodstorks soaring overhead to egrets and herons making their way along the shores, the Hammock Coast is a birder’s paradise. In fact, it’s considered the best birding area in South Carolina and one of the best in the Southeast. 24

So where are the best spots to see the most birds? Huntington Beach State Park boasts a 330-bird checklist with an impressive rarities roster, including Roseate Spoonbill and Piping Plover. Beyond the park, the six Hammock Coast communities offer additional opportunities for birders, who can spot Bald Eagles, egrets, herons, Ruddy Turnstones, Purple Sandpipers and so many more. World-famous Brookgreen Gardens offers birders even more opportunities for sightings and offers daily shows about raptors and owls at its Lowcountry Zoo.

And Audubon notes that birders should not miss Hobcaw Barony, due to its important location at the mouth of Winyah Bay. Hobcaw Barony, near Georgetown, is home to thousands of pristine acres. This large, undisturbed tract has extensive longleaf pine forests with Red-cockaded Woodpecker colonies and excellent Bachman’s Sparrow habitat. And there’s also the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center near Georgetown. Considered one of the most outstanding gifts to wildlife conservation in North America, the center was willed to the South Carolina Wildlife and Marine Resources Department, now the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, in 1976 by the late Tom Yawkey.

The Wildlife Center embraces North, South, and Cat islands, three coastal islands located at the mouth of Winyah Bay. Composed of nearly 31 square miles of marsh, managed wetlands, forest openings, ocean beach, longleaf pine forest, and maritime forest, the center is principally dedicated as a wildlife preserve, research area, and waterfowl refuge. Those familiar with the preserve’s recent history know the present-day Wildlife Center has gradually changed from a hunting preserve to a waterfowl refuge over the years. Marshlands around Winyah Bay and the Santee delta have been highly valued for waterfowl.

fect canvas (a drive down “Oak Alley” at Caledonia is exhibit 1A).

The Hammock Coast isn’t just a great place to take a South Carolina golf trip. Georgetown County is one of America’s premier golf vacation destinations.

Famed designers such as Mike Strantz (True Blue, Caledonia), Tom Fazio (TPC Myrtle Beach) and Dan Maples (Heritage Club, Willbrook) made maximum use of the property they were provided.

Don’t take our word for it. Listen to what some of the most respected names in the game have had to say about the area. The Hammock Coast is home to 12 public courses and four of them - Caledonia, Heritage Club, TPC Myrtle Beach and True Blue - have been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest. Litchfield Country Club and Willbrook Plantation have also been ranked among the nation’s Top 50 Courses for Women. That list of standouts doesn’t include Pawleys Plantation, the highly acclaimed Jack Nicklaus design that is one of South Carolina’s most scenic layouts. Links Magazine even ranked Pawleys Island as the 10th best island in all of golf. So, what makes golf along the Hammock Coast great? Georgetown County is home to stunning natural beauty. The centuries-old oak trees, salt marshes and naturally occurring bodies of water provided course architects with a near-per28

The result is a collection of golf courses that can stand alongside any in America. An underrated facet of the area’s popularity is the diversity of experiences it offers. True Blue and Caledonia couldn’t be more different. Heritage Club showcases Lowcountry golf at its finest while Pawleys Plantation wows players with a back nine routed along a saltwater marsh. Litchfield, the Hammock Coast’s first course, features an old-school country club type experience, while Founders Club, the area’s newest layout, is a modern design from the jump. The Hammock Coast is home to award-winning courses, provides a broad range of experiences, and delivers unrivaled value, leaving little doubt as to why it’s one of America’s premier golf destinations. HISTORY COMES ALIVE ON THE HAMMOCK COAST

South Carolina’s Hammock Coast • hammockcoastsc.com • 843-546-8436

A strong connection with the past is evident in every community along the Hammock Coast. From Native Americans who once thrived along our bountiful shores to early Spanish, French and English settlers to Revolutionary War heroes and beyond, the rich history of the Hammock Coast is still a part of the present. Hundreds of acres of protected land, museums, preserved plantation homes and cultural traditions carefully handed down through the generations make access to the past as easy as walking along the treelined streets of Georgetown or the sandy shores of Pawleys Island and Litchfield Beach. You will be drawn into the beauty of yesterday as you explore the fascinating history of the Hammock Coast. First known for its lucrative indigo industry, Georgetown County became one of the richest areas in the nation through the production of Carolina Gold rice. The life of plantation owners was one of luxury and privilege, juxtaposed with the suffering of hundreds of enslaved Africans forced to complete the labor-intensive cultivation of rice. The enslaved African-Americans of the plantation era developed their own unique culture, and the Gullah Geechee ways are kept alive by their descendants through delicious cuisine, beautiful art and a distinctive dialect. Gullah Geechee art can be seen in museums, gift shops and boutiques throughout the area.

No exploration of Hammock Coast art and history is complete without a visit to Brookgreen Gardens, one of America’s premier sculpture gardens designated a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Huntington Beach State Park, just across Highway 17, is the home of Atalaya Castle and a rich repository of natural beauty While well-known financier Bernard Baruch entertained Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt at Hobcaw Barony, his daughter, Belle, left an enduring mark on today’s world. Bernard Baruch purchased the property between 1905 and 1907 as a hunting retreat, and Belle, who was concerned by the development along the coast, began buying the property from her father in 1936. Upon her death in 1964, the 16,000-acre property was transferred to the Belle Baruch Foundation, ensuring its preservation for future generations. History lovers will also want to explore Hopsewee Plantation, home to one of the signers of The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Lynch Jr. Hopsewee is open to the public year round. Tours are available on the hour from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., and guests may enjoy a tea room with a full menu! This historic site also hosts numerous weddings and events. No trip to the greater Pawleys Island community is complete without a visit to The Hammock Shops Village, a charming shopping village set amid mossdraped live oaks and seasonal blooms. There are lots of shops and eclectic dining options like BisQit, where you can order a burger with root beer-braised pork belly or bacon jam – and housed on a traditional bun or a Southern-made biscuit!

But, really, everything at the Village gets its focus from the creation of those famous rope hammocks that have become a Pawleys Island landmark! And, yes, you may have just figured out how we came to be known as the Hammock Coast! We are all about relaxation here! The idea for the hammock came from native South Carolinian Joshua John Ward, a riverboat captain who ferried rice and supplies between the vast rice plantations and nearby Georgetown and Waverly Mills. Captain Josh found the lumpy, grass-filled mattresses on his boat too hot for the sultry coastal summers, so he set about designing a soft, cool bed that would serve his purpose. The result was a hammock so strong and comfortable that its handmade design has endured for more than a century, unchanged and unchallenged. Stop by and watch local craftsmen make hammocks, expertly weaving rope to make one of the most comfortable and durable hammocks sold anywhere. When you visit the Hammock Shops, stop by and say hello to Marvin Grant, the “Hammock Man.” Mr. Grant is one of the hammock makers in Pawleys Is38

Tour the fascinating South Carolina Maritime Museum featuring photographs, documents, artifacts, and interactive exhibits related to South Carolina’s rich and remarkable maritime history. This small waterfront museum is also home to the Fresnel lens of the old North Island Lighthouse.

Don’t miss the Rice Museum, located at the iconic clock tower on Front Street. This unique structure houses the museum’s permanent collection of dioramas, maps, paintings, artifacts and other exhibits that tell the history of rice cultivation in Georgetown County. And no museum tour of the Hammock Coast is complete without enjoying the splendor of the Kaminski House. Of the more than 60 antebellum homes in Georgetown, the Kaminski House Museum stands out as one of the most representative of the Georgianstyle of the era. Learn what life was like in South Carolina’s third-oldest city on one of the museum’s docentguided tours. If you’d enjoy a self-guided tour of homes and historic places, be sure to stop by the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce’s Visitors Center at 531 Front Street and pick up two of our most popular brochures that allow you to stroll at your leisure while learning about our unique heritage. Our Historic Register brochure

Rice Museum highlights the 66 Georgetown sites on the National Historic Register, and our African-American History brochure puts the spotlight on the unique and powerful contributions from African-Americans who helped build our region. For more info, visit www.hammockcoastsc.com.

Murrells Inlet is one of the oldest coastal communities in South Carolina and is known for its quaint charm. Travel south to Litchfield Beach, a quiet beach community named for a former rice plantation. The small barrier island of Pawleys Island draws visitors back year after year – a Pawleys Island vacation is often a family tradition that is handed down through generations.
