Coastal Adventures come in all shapes and sizes sure to please everyone in the family. Get out there and make a memory! Pick up a paddle and kayak, canoe or SUP (stand up paddleboard) your way to a memorable coastal adventure. Full and half day tours and rentals are offered locally along the Grand Strand. A slow paddle through the tidal blackwater swamps of Black River or the canals running through abandoned rice fields along the mighty Waccamaw is an incredible experience with lots of opportunity to see wildlife and get a feel for what this area was like in times past. Spartina cord grass, hundreds of birds, sea turtles and maybe even a dolphin or two await your salt marsh expedition. Huntington Beach State Park offers a two hour kayak trip every Monday that will give you a fascinating look at the maritime forest and salt marsh bordering the park. Extreme adventures are waiting whether you want to go down or up. Parasailing is a popular thrill that takes you several hundred feet above the water. Visit Ocean Watersports and the captain and crew will send you up, up and away! If you have a need for speed, Ocean Watersports also offers jet ski rentals – a thrilling way to experience the blue Atlantic! Scuba diving along the Grand Strand offers extreme adventure and fun. Our area has a high concentration of beautiful natural shipwreck sites with many from the Civil War and WWII eras. There are also several reefs that contain intact ships. Divers, be sure to check out Barracuda Alley, a project spearheaded by the scuba diving experts at Coastal

Scuba and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. For the anglers in the family, Crazy Sisters Marina in Murrells Inlet offers half and full day deep sea fishing trips for the adventurous sportsman. You can even choose an overnight trip on the New Inlet Princess. On the north end of the beach, in the laid back fishing village of Little River, daily fishing trips are offered. Land lovers will enjoy fishing from one of the Grand Strand’s fishing piers – with free advice from local fishermen! Rover Boat Tours in Georgetown offers daily tours that let you collect shells, see dolphins and visit a lighthouse – all in the same day. The Grand Strand is The Family Beach and there are so many activities perfect for the whole gang. Here are a few Strand favorites to get you started on some serious family fun! The kids will be happy if you take them to Wild Water and Wheels – a water park with enough thrills and excitement to please everyone. Local Volunteers Work to Protect the Endangered Loggerhead Sea Turtle If you’re out on the beach early in the morning, you may see a SCUTE (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts) volunteer monitoring loggerhead sea turtle activity. The official reptile of South Carolina averages 200-300 pounds and can grow up to 5 feet in length. Even though these turtles are large in size, they are not large in numbers and are a threatened species. Bothering them or the nests is prohibited by law. SCUTE volunteers are dedicated to sea turtle conservation in Georgetown and Horry counties. Organized in 1990 and based out of Pawleys Island, SCUTE is permitted by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources to protect and, if necessary, relocate turtle nests as well as record turtle deaths through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network. Throughout the nesting and hatching season, SCUTE volunteers distribute information to beach goers who express an interest in turtle conservation. For more information on the loggerhead sea turtle, contact SCUTE at 843-237-9821 or 843-235-8755 or Myrtle Beach State Park at 843-238-0874. 1 6 • C h e c k o u t o u r e - b o o k @ w w w. s t r a n d m a g a z i n e . c o m

how to shop the Grand Strand: a local’s perspective 2 0 • C h e c k o u t o u r e - b o o k @ w w w. s t r a n d m a g a z i n e . c o m

Get the inside scoop on where to shop and how to save from Grand Strand locals – they know how to shop and have the ultimate insider tips for you. With so many great shopping options, finding what you want and more is easy to do while visiting our area. Here are Strand Magazine’s top 10 tips for shopping while visiting the Grand Strand. 1. Find a wide selection of upscale fashion and designer brands at The Market Common, a great shopping and dining set in a designed urban village environment that encourages strolling from shop to shop. 2. There are two main malls within the heart of Myrtle Beach – Coastal Grand Mall and Myrtle Beach Mall, each with its own unique style of shopping experience. Both malls offer easy outside access to their signature stores. You can park your car, hop right in and hop right out for easy accessibility – Belk, Dillards, Bed Bath & Beyond, Ulta and more. 3. Family options are endless at Bass Pro Shop and Bargain Beachwear; everything you will need for fishing, hiking, hunting to t-shirts, boogie boards and souvenirs abound. Or visit the Gay Dolphin, the largest gift store on the East Coast, and I Love Sugar, definitely the largest candy store in the city, both located on Ocean Blvd.

4. Bargain shoppers, you have come to the right place! Myrtle Beach has two outlet malls filled with bargains from your favorite factory stores. Tanger Outlets are well known by many for their wide variety of shops and prices that can’t be beat. Pick up that last piece of china you need to complete your set at the Lenox Outlet – they’ll wrap it so well you won’t have to worry about breakage! 5. Each section of the Grand Strand has its own flavor and shopping. In Pawleys Island you’ll find unusual and fun small boutiques at The Shoppes at Sweetgrass, The Hammock Shops Village and The Island Shops. The town of Conway is great for shoppers with lots of artsy handmade items, unusual clothing, wine and even a few interesting consignment shops. Waterfront Georgetown is also lined with eclectic shops just waiting for you to find that treasure you won’t want to leave behind. Another secret shopping site for locals is Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. Save time for this one, just in case you’d like to join the shag dancers for a spin. 6. The best hidden gem of the Grand Strand is La Plage designer swimwear where local swimsuit designer, Tara Grinna began her career. La Plage offers the largest and most distinctive swimwear with over 10,000 suits from which to choose.

21

7. New for 2015 is the Coastal North Town Center, located in North Myrtle Beach, between Cherry Grove and Ocean Drive. A first for our area is the new Publix grocery store and Hobby Lobby (home décor galore), both of which were desperately needed in this small beachside community. Shoppers on the north end also now have their very own Ross Dress for Less, a favorite of bargain shoppers looking for the best deals around. 8. Staying in one night after a long day on the beach? Stop by one of many fresh produce stands or visit local Indigo Farms, and pick up fresh blueberries, tomatoes, corn and so much more for those hot summer night suppers. 9. And if one person’s trash is another’s treasure, you will love the upscale consignment stores found up and down

the Grand Strand. Check out Finders Keepers for the best name brand and designer clothing as well as home furnishings and accessories. It’s lots more fun than a yard sale and the air conditioning is always running! Or if you find yourself in Pawleys Island, check by Take 2 Resale; you will not be disappointed. 10. Last but certainly not least, if you are in the mood for remodeling or building, go straight to Rose Arbor Fabrics and Barbara’s Fine Gifts on Hwy. 17 Business in Myrtle Beach. The finest in gorgeous fabrics, home décor and that extra special gift you want to take back for yourself. For that eclectic friend or family member, drive a few miles to Rainbow Harbor and Studio 77, where you will find unique, funky and fun gifts for everyone, including yourself.

The lights go up after sunset along the Grand Strand, and there is so much entertainment from which to choose! Entertainer and entrepreneur, Calvin Gilmore launched The Carolina Opry in 1986. His live music variety show features a cast of 36 of the nation’s top singers, dancers, comedians and musicians in his own 2200-seat theater. The two-hour show is continually updated with new music and comedy and has everything from rock ‘n roll, Broadway and country to classic hits, pop melodies and gospel. This is a show your entire family will love! February through October, Alabama Theatre at Barefoot Landing delights audiences with “One: The New Show,” while November and December are reserved for the theatre’s special holiday musical experience. If you love Elvis Presley and other tributes to great performers, Legends in Concert is for you. Each season features a new lineup of tributes to the greatest stars of yesterday and today, backed by a live band and electrifying dancers. Another starstudded option for fun after sunset is the beautiful Palace Theatre in Myrtle Beach which hosts a wide variety of live entertainment. Enjoy a trip back to an age of bravery and daring at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. You’ll pick your favorites and cheer them on while enjoying a tasty, rustic meal sure to leave you satisfied. Pirates and buccaneers that once sailed the South Carolina coast have come to life at Pirate’s Voyage Fun, Feast and Adventure. Enjoy a Pirate’s feast while the Crimson and Sapphire Pirates battle on land, on water and in the sky above their full sized pirate ships!

If theatre to you means local and intimate, try Conway’s own Theatre of the Republic. This award-winning theatre troupe presents shows throughout the year and are wildly popular with locals and visitors alike. The professional theatre group, Atlantic Stage in Myrtle Beach, is a venue started by a group of theatre students from Coastal Carolina University and has become a favorite with lovers of the stage. For a rockin’ good time, The Boathouse in Fantasy Harbor hosts a summer concert series that attracts those looking for drink specials and good music, all set on the Intracoastal Waterway. Check the concert schedule for the Myrtle Beach House of Blues, which hosts a wide variety of exciting artists throughout the year. Now for those who just want to dance! If you want to move to a country beat and have a great time, visit The Bowery on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. This iconic bar is where the country group, Alabama, got their start in the ‘70s. Lovers of beach music and dancing the shag are in luck – Ocean Drive’s Fat Harold’s has been a dancer’s favorite for many years, and even if you don’t know how to shag, go just to watch the smooth moves of local shaggers. For a retro/disco vibe, visit Revolutions in Myrtle Beach and dance like John Travolta. For late night excitement, dress in your finest and go dancing at Malibu’s Surf Bar, named one of the best dance clubs in Myrtle Beach by USA Today. Get out and enjoy Sunset and Beyond. The Grand Strand offers nightlife that excites, dazzles and entertains!

Step out over the beautiful saltwater marsh with your favorite drink or cocktail and let the breeze just take you away. One of the most spectacular views in North Myrtle Beach is waiting for you at Joe’s. 810 Conway Street, North Myrtle Beach, 843-272-4666 Myrtle Beach From dawn to dusk, SEA CAPTAIN’S HOUSE prepares the finest dishes for every meal. They are open for lunch and dinner. 1111 3rd Ave, Conway, 843-248-3733 Murrells Inlet Head south along the Grand Strand to the quaint fishing village of Murrells Inlet where you will find a surplus of great, locally owned restaurants, Murrells Inlet Restaurants not only offer the freshest seafood on the Grand Strand but also some of the best scenic views around. Some local favorites are THE WICKED TUNA, known for their incredible views of the salt marsh, sushi, and fresh seafood; HOT FISH CLUB, located in the oldest existing restaurant building on the Grand Strand, remains a favorite gathering place for discriminating locals who love personal service,

incredible views, superb fresh seafood and a great wine list. BLISS offers a truly authentic and unique taste of upscale dining – a culinary experience that will leave you wanting to come back again! All located on Hwy. 17 Business, Murrells Inlet Pawleys Island A little farther south you’ll find a mecca of fine dining options. CHIVE BLOSSOM CAFE offers unique dining in a comfortable atmosphere. Perfect for lunch or dinner, Chive Blossom is Pawleys Island’s best kept secret – some of the locals’ favorites include the okra pancakes with shrimp jambalya, or scallop cakes with a Dill Beurre Blanc sauce and roasted tomatoes, just to name a few. For dessert, don’t miss owner Trina Renault’s homemade cheesecake – the best I’ve ever tasted! 85 North Causeway, Pawleys Island , 843-237-1438 Très chic and friendly, BISTRO 217 is located in Downtown Pawleys. Menu specials change every day and offer you the freshest, seasonal ingredients. The food is creative without being exaggerated. My personal favorite is the lunch entrée of pan sautéed grouper, covered with lobster sauce served over fried spinach. And, leave room for dessert, the chef’s homemade ice cream, churned everyday (at least 6 available flavors) served alongside delectable bread pudding, brownies, bananas foster and so much more. 10707 Ocean Hwy., Unit D, Pawleys Island, 843-235-8217 FRANKS AND FRANKS OUTBACK have been providing some of the finest dining experiences around for over 25 years. This popular Pawleys Island establishment is actually two restaurants in one – the more formal main dining room is Frank’s, and the more casual

outdoor patio deck and covered terrace is Frank’s Outback. They have two very distinct menus and atmospheres. The good news is you can’t go wrong with either choice. The Pan-Fried Grouper with Shrimp in Dijon and Peppercorn Cream Sauce and the Wood-Fired Pizzas are among the standards that keep us coming back for more. 10434 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, 843-449-7945 Georgetown ALFRESCO GEORGETOWN BISTRO is a favorite with locals and visitors alike, Alfresco Georgetown Bistro is a lovely fine dining restaurant featuring Italian and Seafood dishes with indoor and outdoor seating. Heaters keep diners warm in the cooler months, so eating outside is almost always an option. Locals rave about the Filet Cobb Salad for lunch and the Veal Piccata is a nighttime favorite. As with most locally-owned restaurants, consider the specials, which are always fresh and delicious. 812 Front Street, Georgetown, 843-344-3869 In September of 2013, a tragic early morning fire took out a block of historic waterfront buildings on Front Street in Georgetown. One of the restaurants that lost its home, Zest, reopened just down the street, renaming itself SEVEN HUNDRED MODERN GRILL + BAR after the lost block. This cozy and friendly restaurant is the go-to place for locals to get their sushi, but the nightly specials are always a good choice. There is a pound cake dessert that I urge you to try if you have room! Open for lunch and dinner. 916 Front Street, Georgetown, 843-520-5720

Strand Magazine Helps You Plan the Perfect Week

With everything to see and do along the Grand Strand, it’s easy to see why Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is America’s Favorite Family Vacation Destination. Strand Magazine gives you a sample itinerary below so you can experience it all! Pick and choose your favorites and most of all – HAVE FUN! Day 1: Get Oriented It’s easy to decide your first stop when visiting our beautiful area – head to the beach! Be sure to throw your Strand Magazine in the beach bag so you can decide where to go for dinner. Check out our “Eat Like A Local” section (pgs. 28-33) to get insider tips on the best restaurants. Day 2: Myrtle Beach’s Must See Attractions After breakfast, grab the family and escape to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Begin by walking down the Boardwalk, and surveying all there is to see and do. The kids will love the Sky Wheel with its

spectacular aerial view of Myrtle Beach. Have lunch at the iconic Peaches Corner and pull up to the bar, order a cold beer and a footlong with all the trimmings. Your whole vacation could begin and end on this boardwalk and you’d have a good time doing it. After lunch, head back to the beach to catch some rays, and this time, add some excitement! Ocean Watersports provides you with every type of exhilarating water fun imaginable. you race around the tracks in your own go-kart on seven different tracks. Day 3: Plantations and Gardens Today, head south for a peek into the past. Visit Brookgreen Gardens and its fascinating Lowcountry Center that depicts the history of the Lowcountry from its Native American beginnings through the enslavement of Africans and beyond. Named one of the Top 10 Public Gardens in the country, Brookgreen is filled with sculptures and is home to the only accredited zoo on the coast of the Carolinas. Next, head to either Atalaya Castle (directly across from Brookgreen in Huntington Beach State Park), Hopsewee Plantation (south of Georgetown) or Hobcaw Barony (just north of Georgetown and not recommended for children under 10), for an afternoon rich in Lowcountry and Southern history. All three are well worth a visit. Day 4: Fun in the Sun…and a Waterfront Stroll Enjoy breakfast at a local bagel shop – Krave Bagels in North Myrtle Beach or Bagel Café in Myrtle Beach are personal favorites. Now, on to some fun in the sun and water…it’s water park day… head to Wild Water & Wheels in Surfside Beach, where you and your family can enjoy over 24 fabulous slides and the lazy river. Spend all day or half day to experience one of the Top 10 water parks on the East Coast. After a day in the sun, head south to Murrells Inlet and the Marshwalk. There you will find beautiful scenes as the sun sets. Take a stroll down the boardwalk, stopping along the way to hear many of the various live bands, eat our great seafood and watch the goats grazing on Goat Island. Day 5: Beach Day The beautiful beaches are why you

are here, correct? So spend the entire day soaking in the sun, shelling, surf fishing, playing bocce on the beach, building sandcastles, playing volleyball, riding the waves, resting and relaxing under the umbrella. Day 6: Day of Nostalgia It’s your last full day on the Grand Strand and after you spend several hours playing on the beach and having fun in the sun, head north to Ocean Drive. Visit the Spanish Galleon and Ducks on Main where our state dance, the shag, is practiced and perfected by thousands of shaggers every year, young and old alike. A little farther north in Little River, make reservations for one of the Casino Boats or Dolphin Watching! Both are a fun way to spend the afternoon on the calm waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Tonight, catch a fabulous show and dinner at one of our many theaters. Known nationwide as the best in family entertainment, the Carolina Opry is hailed by CNBC as the “Top Attraction in Myrtle Beach!” The talent will astound you. If a dinner theater is more your style, try Medieval Times or Pirates Voyage for a fun family experience. Grab a cone at one of the many ice cream parlors located all over the Grand Strand; Kirk’s Ice Cream in Myrtle Beach is a personal favorite. Day 7: Check-out and Hidden Treasure If you exit the Grand Strand on Hwy. 501, you’ll go right past our hidden treasure, the small quaint city of Conway. Instead of bypassing this historical little town, drive through, stop and have lunch at Rivertown Bistro, Dilly Beans or The Trestle; all are incredible and delicious. Stroll the streets and shop the boutiques and antique stores. What a perfect ending to a magical week. Safe travels home! 35
