He received his training at the OCAD and the University of Toronto. The artist has just returned from Belize, having spent 3 ½ years studying Mayan culture and painting. Three of his paintings are in the Corozal Municipal Centre, the first is of the Prime Minster, the second is of Baron Bliss (a British benefactor) and the third is the Belizean flag. Myrtle Beach

From Market Common to Barefoot Landing Myrtle Beach, the Queen of the Grand Strand, is a coveted destination that calls visitors back year after year. Her beautiful, sandy beaches are always a first stop, but visitors will find so much more – fabulous shopping, a dizzying array of entertainment and, of course, delicious and diverse dining on every corner. This town truly has it all. Families began vacationing in Myrtle Beach more than a century ago, traveling by horse, buggy and ferry to spend a day in the sand and sun on the mostly unoccupied beach. Our city has been known by several different names throughout its history. It was first called “Chicora,” or land, by Native American residents. Later settlers named the area “New Town.” It was eventually named Myrtle Beach after the wax myrtle shrub common to the area. Today, Myrtle Beach is one of the most visited beaches on the East Coast and offers something for everyone, attracting nearly 14 million visitors each year. In the following pages, we’ve brought together some of our favorite spots to shop, dine and have fun!

Exhilarating Water Sports

Of course, when you come to Myrtle Beach, you want to spend time in the water! On the beach at 3rd Avenue South, Ocean Watersports (see ad on page 13) has so many ways to have fun and get wet! The Great Outdoors

Grab that new bathing suit or tee shirt and shorts and get outside! There is so much to do in Myrtle Beach’s great outdoors. Sand and Surf Our beaches are some of the best in the world, and enjoying them is THE reason to visit Myrtle Beach. Along Ocean Boulevard are signs for public beach access points – Myrtle Beach has 42 public access points in total. Some offer parking, and parking meters are in place from March 1 – October 30. Beach wheelchairs are available at no cost on a first come, first serve basis. Call 843-918-1382 and the chair will be delivered to your site by a community service officer. All beaches are patrolled by area police for safety, and rules are strictly enforced. Check with your lifeguard if you are not sure about any of our rules and regulations. Enjoy your days on the beach and don’t forget your sunscreen! Beach umbrellas and chairs are available for rent through your lifeguard.

For a more back-to-nature beach experience, visit Myrtle Beach State Park. Located on the south end of the beach, it features beautiful beaches, a fishing pier, public restrooms, plenty of parking along with nature trails and interesting nature programs for children. Fishing rods, bait and free instruction from the locals is available if you feel like wetting a line!

More Great Outdoors Hiking and Bike Trails If you’re ready to get your sweat on, head to Horry County Bike and Run Park (843-915-5330). Also known as “The Hulk,” the single track mountain bike and running trail starts out with a 30 foot hill climb, and then takes on characteristics of a wooden roller coaster for three fourths of the trail. With a few tight twisty sections, several switchbacks, small hill climbs, ditch digs, dramatic drops, field laps and possible speeds up to 20 mph, this is the closest thing to real mountain biking and trail running that Myrtle Beach has to offer. It truly surprises everyone. If you like your time outdoors to be a bit more leisurely, the East Coast Greenway has a section in Myrtle Beach that crosses Highway 31 near Carolina Forest. Runners, walkers and cyclists will enjoy this safe and lovely route. Myrtle Beach State Park is also a fun place to walk and hike. Rangers can help you plan your route! The Market Common also has wonderful outdoor spaces to play. Check out the fantastic two mile paved walking and bicycling trail that overlooks the area’s lake and recreational fields.

Fun on Land If you just don’t feel like getting wet today, head to The Track. The Track Recreation Center is one-stop actionpacked fun for the whole family, with two multi-level elevated go-kart tracks

that give drivers a hybrid go-kart roller coaster experience. You may want to escape the summer heat and get your game on with a visit to the indoor and air-conditioned arcade that expands over 5,000 square feet. Broadway Grand Prix is another favorite of visitors with seven go-kart tracks, two 18-hole mini golf courses and an indoor arcade! Broadway at the Beach is also the home of some of the thrill rides that once were at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion, or you can venture south to experience the Swamp Fox roller coaster, one of 37 rides at the Family Kingdom Amusement Park. The Swamp Fox, a wooden roller coaster, has been a landmark in Myrtle Beach since 1966 and reaches speeds of up to 50 miles per hour! Locals and visitors alike love strolling on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. Opened in 2010, the 1.2 mile oceanfront Myrtle Beach boardwalk is filled with activity, from live music to restaurants and even thrilling rides and attractions, like the SkyWheel, that takes you 200 feet in the air for a scenic ride you’ll never forget! You’ll experience a meandering oceanfront park on the southernmost end and the thrills and excitement increase as you make your way north. Check for summer entertainment from strolling jugglers to a family-friendly Kids Carnival.

The Art of Food – Grand Strand Style Well-prepared and delicious, a good meal is one of life’s pleasures, and an important part of any vacation is enjoying your favorite foods. Locally, trained chefs prepare a dizzying variety of cuisines for your dining pleasure. Seafood, of course, is served in every way imaginable, from the traditional Murrells Inlet or Calabash seafood platter to fresh and tasty sushi or a perfectly grilled piece of freshly-caught fish drizzled with a rich, complex sauce. A regional favorite, shrimp and grits, comes to your table piping hot, creamy and–unforgettable! Oysters are another local favorite and depending on the time of year, can be eaten steamed, fried or on the half shell. Our local blue crabs are a delicacy steamed, prepared as crab cakes or in she crab soup. Be sure to take note of the chef ’s specials wherever you choose to dine–these are usually a

good choice and are only available for a short time. From picnics to catered feasts, al fresco dining is another Grand Strand favorite and the favored cuisine for the many family reunions held in our area. Our area’s Gullah cultures also influences the locals choice in food–nothing smells (or tastes) more delicious than an outdoor fish fry or a one pot rice dish flavored with local flair. There are plenty of family-friendly chains along the Grand Strand. Most children we know love Mexican food, and there are plenty of choices, from easily recognizable chains to locally-owned cantinas. More for the grown-ups and a favorite of locals, our Thai restaurants are some of the best in the region. From cheesy, tomato sauce-covered Italian to a tender, juicy filet, there is a meal for every appetite along the Grand Strand.

From Market Common to Georgetown The southern end of the Grand Strand encompasses several smaller communities and one historic city. Surfside Beach, Garden City Beach, Murrells Inlet, Litchfield, Pawleys Island and Georgetown are all unique communities with a shared, laid back lifestyle that draw visitors who enjoy a slower pace. The Town of Surfside Beach is a small beach town that is big on families, with wide clean beaches, beautiful public parks and a true hometown feel. People who vacation in Litchfield and Pawleys Island are intensely loyal to their annual getaway. Summer home of Georgetown County’s wealthy rice planters in the 18th and 19th centuries, today Pawleys Island draws people from across the nation who come to enjoy its beauty and peace. The small town of Georgetown is the third oldest in the state. The picturesque, waterfront Harborwalk is lined with fun shops and restaurants, and history buffs love the tours of the historic district, featuring antebellum homes meticulously restored.

An Adventure to Remember

The beaches on the south end are quieter and less crowded, inviting leisurely strolls to find that perfect shell. Surfside Beach, known as “The Family Beach,” is the only non-smoking beach in the area and public beach accesses have parking. Beach wheelchairs are also available through the Surfside Beach Public Safety Department. The iconic Surfside Pier was partially destroyed by Hurricane Matthew and restoration plans are underway. While you are in Surfside Beach, be sure and visit Old Time Pottery (see ad on page 48). You will find everything you need for your home at discount prices! Hudson’s Flea Market is a fun way to spend a few hours – you never know what you will find!

Garden City Beach is situated in both Horry and Georgetown Counties, and kids young and old love the Garden City Pier and surrounding area. Stroll the Marshwalk in Murrells Inlet, and visit Crazy Sister Marina where deep sea fishing tours are available. One of the best kept secrets on the south end is Hobcaw Barony, where visitors can take tours rich in southern history and wildlife conservation. In Georgetown, several boat tours are available. See a lighthouse and find some wonderful shells or learn about the rice plantations that made Georgetown County wealthy before the Civil War. Farther south, Huntington Beach State Park is a paradise with gorgeous beaches and weekly kayaking trips give leisurely views of the marshes. Explore Atalaya while you’re there, the former home of Anna and Archer Huntington, and a popular site for weddings. Brookgreen Gardens (see ad on page 35) is one of the most beautiful outdoor museums in the country, and well worth a visit. Walking through the beautiful gardens and seeing the amazing sculptures is an experience you should definitely put on the to-do list. The North End

THE GREAT OUTDOORS We know you came here for the beach – sitting in a comfy sand chair under an umbrella and listening to the waves break on the shore – bliss! Locals love the Cherry Grove Fishing Pier for beach access and enjoying a walk on the pier, but parking fees apply! Between Cherry Grove and North Myrtle Beach you can find lots of free public parking and easy access to the shore. Crescent Beach and Windy Hill are both also fun places to spend your beach day. But there is a lot more to do on the north end.

Quaint and lovely Little River offers half and full day charter fishing trips for the angler in the group. If you are visiting in May, the Blue Crab Festival (5/19 & 20) is an annual favorite. Play Tarzan for the day at Go Ape Zipline and Treetop Adventure! Thrill-seekers will find a day of adventure here, and they have recently added a Treetop Junior course for the younger crowd. If this is a little too much action, The North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex offers three hiking trails and lots of other outdoor activities, including the exciting Shark Wake Park, where you can experience the extreme nature of wakeboarding without a boat. Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 am–noon, the wake is slower for beginners – get out there and have an adventure! MUSIC & DANCING No visit to The North End could be considered complete without a visit to Fat Harold’s Beach Club to watch the shaggers slide and twirl to the sounds of beach music – you could even take a few lessons! North Myrtle Beach also has free concerts on Main Street throughout the summer. Beginning in May, Music on Main concerts are held every Thursday at 7 pm. North Myrtle Beach is also the home of a House of Blues – check and see who’s playing while you’re here. OFF THE BEATEN PATH Wine lovers alert! Duplin Winery’s vineyards are located in Rose Hill, North Carolina, but now the popular winery has opened a Tasting Station in North Myrtle Beach.
