Letter from the Editor Last fall I attended a family wedding. My beautiful niece married her beloved in the courtyard of an historic home in Beaufort and afterward we all enjoyed a wonderful meal and a party. It was a happy, memory-making occasion with many family members in attendance – we ate, drank and danced until late in the evening. Family members were seated at a flower-laden head table, and I distinctly remember looking up and down, taking in the lovely view, and thinking that I loved each and every person seated there. I couldn’t have chosen better dinner companions. All of them know who I really am and are delighted by my company – and I feel the same way. Later, while telling friends about the wedding, I realized my fun wedding table applied to every area of my life. The people I invite into my world are all “sitting at my table,” and part of living my best life is making sure I love and trust every single one of them. Do they support my hopes and dreams? Am I completely comfortable being myself around them? I am blessed with a loving family and a beautiful tribe of friends, but it hasn’t always been that way. I invite you, dear reader, to ask yourself, “Who is sitting at my table?” “If I was planning my perfect party, would I want all of them seated around me?” And if the answer isn’t followed by a rush of love and affection, well, you know what to do. You are worthy of people who take joy in your company and accept you unconditionally. We all are.

Catherine and I by Celina Colby
T
he waist on Catherine the Great’s wedding dress is 18 inches. I shift to the side, peering into the glass display case like there might be a fun house mirror back there. My hand drifts to my own belt, which is a bit tighter due to the traditional three course lunches here in Moscow. I thought I knew everything about Catherine’s story, her coup against her crap husband, her groundbreaking art collection, her thirst for war-won territory. But I seem to have missed the part of the biography where they mentioned she was actually an animated Barbie doll. Catherine the Great wasn’t Russian at all. She was Prussian and she and that 18-inch waist were shipped in to the snowy motherland to wed Peter III. I’m not Russian either. In fact I’m Latina, which I’m pretty sure is the opposite of Russian. She was only 16 when she came to Russia; I have the benefit of being almost ten years older, and apparently the curse of having eaten ten more years worth of chocolate. But in a way I feel a kinship with this early queen. I imagine that the disorientation I felt when I stepped off the plane into a sea of Cyrillic signage and guttural Russian was similar to what she felt riding across the border. I sat in the back of a taxi praying my hand gestures were enough to get me to my hotel and not to a shallow grave; she sat in the back of her carriage hoping her future husband wasn’t ugly, or, you know, the genocidal type. I didn’t come to Russia on a whim. I came on a pilgrimage. I was 15 when I fell in with the wintry crowd. One reading of Dostoevsky, so full of angst and nihilism and drama, and I was a goner. From there I moved on to harder stuff. Gogol, Turgenev, Tolstoy. I started learning Russian phrases to mutter under my breath when the

totalitarian regime of high school teachers was too oppressive. I added fur to my wardrobe. I was perpetually in an existential crisis. I still am. This trip was ten years in the making. I had tried and failed before to arrange something but this year, on the tenth year anniversary of that introduction to Dostoevsky, nothing was going to stop me from getting to Russia. None of my friends would take the trip with me so I found an empty spot on a tour and boarded the plane alone. After a decade of living in the words I arrived, first in Saint Petersburg, then in Moscow. It felt strangely like a homecoming. Catherine also embraced Russian culture as her own. She converted to Eastern Orthodoxy, changed her name from Sophia to Catherine and consumed Russian history and culture with a rabid appetite. I guess to make up for all those calories she couldn’t eat in her corset. She knew that in order to have any power in Russia she would need to be able to relate to its people. History tells us that didn’t last but she started off on the right foot. I walk further down the hallway of display cases in the Armory. It’s funny that it’s called the Armory because there are few actual weapons on display. It’s primarily the trappings of society, clothes, crowns, carriages. Women’s weapons. Once Catherine the Great ousted Peter off the throne her 18-inch waist disappears. Her gowns grow and grow. In fact, she famously brought the traditional Russian style of dress back into fashion, not because of patriotism but because of its forgiving silhouette.
But in a way I feel a kinship with this early queen. I imagine that the disorientation I felt when I stepped off the plane into a sea of Cyrillic signage and guttural Russian was similar to what she felt riding across the border. Sasee.com
I mean, who can blame her? Who has time to go to the gym when you’re the most powerful woman in the world? Plus, legend has it she burned

enough calories in the bedroom to check the exercise box off her to-do list. As if her political accolades weren’t enough of a reason to love her, the woman had game. She was bedding men half her age when women were still getting burned at the stake for so much as talking about sex. She was basically the Hugh Hefner of the 1700s. Traveling across the world to Russia by myself didn’t scare me. It made me feel powerful. When Catherine enacted the bloodless coup where she took the throne from her ineffective husband, she wore a guard’s uniform. You can see that uniform, not here at the Armory but in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg. She got on a horse, rounded up the guardsmen and told her husband he was out. She was fearless. That’s how I felt boarding that plane. Catherine never wore another wedding dress. In public anyway, there’s some hot eighteenth century gossip that speculates she had a secret wedding to one of her lovers. But she did change Russia forever. For me there’s no contest between Catherine’s first famous dress and her last. Who needs an 18-inch waist when you’re running the largest country in the world? I smile at the phantom Catherine in that glass display case and raise an imaginary glass of champagne in her honor. Here’s to you soul sister, from one foreigner to another.

Shower Power
by Diane DeVaughn Stokes
Y
ou may have read in Sasee last month that I said I was not a party person. I hate parties for me, and I prefer having a few couples over for dinner rather than a big shindig. But I have to admit I have thrown some incredible showers for friends over the years. After having to buy some very ugly bridesmaids dresses in the seventies, I suggested to my friends that I’d rather spend my money wisely throwing a shower for them than wasting money on an empire waist, lime green and brown dress that I would never wish to wear again! Case dismissed. One bridal shower was for a dear friend who was very prim and proper. And I know what y’all are thinking! You did not think I could have any friends in that category! Frankly, I am pretty shocked too. I knew that if I did not do something kooky for the bridal shower, the evening would be very boring. So I asked everyone to bring gifts of lingerie for the new bride-to-be. However, I asked the guests to wear their worst bedroom attire. You know, the kind of stuff you should never wear in front of your husband, for the first year at least! The evening’s fashionistas were decked out in flannel pajamas, men’s baggy tee shirts and boxer shorts, grandma-style chenille bath robes, dingy nylon nightgowns, holey leggings and sweatshirts, huge floppy slippers, cold-creamed faces, big barrel curlers, and even one brave soul in a Victoria’s Secret nightie that was at least three sizes too small for her round, pudgy body. Gosh, I hope she isn’t reading this! But it was an incredibly fun night, and gave my neighbors something more to talk about as they watched the parade of beauties looking more like Halloween trick-or-treaters than the typical bridal shower attendees. Best of all, this was truly a “blushing” bride as she opened some
of her new sexy negligees in front of all of us, plus her mother and mother-in-law to be! And oh, the games that we played! You will have to use your imagination ‘cause they were too racy to describe in such a wholesome magazine. Sadly, we have lost touch with each other. Or maybe she decided I was too over-the-top for her liking. Actually I am. My second best shower was a baby shower for a friend who said she was too miserable to want to come to her own shower having gained forty-five pounds and still had one month to go. So to make her feel at home, I invited all her friends to come “pregnantly” stuffed with pillows. Every single woman who walked through the door appeared to be with child. Now my neighbors were really going wild! But it made the night so much more fun for all of us, and the real mother-to-be loved it most. And believe it or not, I once threw a shower for a friend who was leaving our mutual place of employment and moving to a bigger city for a better job. I called it a Shower-Shower asking all our fellow employees to bring her things for her new bathroom. Each gift was unique from towels, soap bars, loofahs, bubble bath, a shower bonnet, shampoo, and she even got a yellow rubber ducky! Obviously, I have never been normal. I have never done anything typical or expected. But those of you who know my mother know I get this trait honestly. It’s genetic. Like the line from the song “The Impossible Dream,”…“to go where the brave dare not go.” Life is too short to NOT step out of the box! So the next time you have to throw a shower of any type, a luncheon or tea party – whatever, don’t just do it! Add a little spice to the event and make it memorable for yourself and for others!

Nicole Says…Read These Books
Spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner. This marks the beginning of one of my favorite seasons… New Book Releases! That’s right; a lot of our favorite authors publish their latest books over the next few months. The Southern Side of Paradise by Kristy Woodson Harvey Ansley Murphy is happily in love with the man of her dreams, while her three daughters seem to be settling down with their significant others. However, Ansley’s youngest is keeping a secret that might destroy them all. Emerson is avoiding the doctor’s calls and emails, because once she knows what’s wrong, it becomes even more real. She would rather focus on her upcoming wedding and the movie role of a lifetime. Will the Murphy women be able to lean on one another as they have before? Or will past secrets divide this family for good? Peachtree Bluff is an idyllic Southern town in Georgia, where everyone feels at home. Harvey does an excellent job of reminding readers that no matter the size of the town, it is the hearts of residents that count. Readers will be thrilled to see updates on their favorite minor characters. The parallel relationships show the various levels of love and how important it is to fight for true love. Kristy Woodson Harvey will be at the Moveable Feast on May 3rd! Harvey is one of my favorite Southern writers. Throughout each of her books, she depicts strong female characters who know the importance of family. This latest novel was one that I anxiously awaited reading, because I was thrilled to spend more time with the Murphy women. Even after I turned the last page, I keep holding out hope that there will be more, even if only a few novellas over the next few years.
Fall of Poppies: Stories of Love and the Great War
by Jessica Brockmole, Hazel Gaynor, Evangeline Holland, Kate Kerrigan, Jennifer Robson, Marci Jefferson, Heather Webb, Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig Nine authors combined their talents to present a wide collection of stories covering the end of World War I. Each story is complete and transports you back in time while providing a different perspective. From a poignant story of forgiving a stranger, to the injured soldiers finding hope in prosthetics, this book has a story for everyone. There are moments where readers will cry, but they are balanced by the feeling of hope and new beginnings. In some anthologies there are weak spots… stories that don’t quite live up to the others. However, this collection is a strong project of incredible talent. Each story is separate and takes readers all across Europe, and builds another layer of human emotion. The final novella is written by Hazel Gaynor, and it is one that will remain in readers’ hearts forever. Each of these authors shines and shows readers that despite the war being over, the survivors have to find their own individualized path to peace. If you have followed my reviews over the years, you will note that I thoroughly enjoy WWII novels, but I have not read too many books set during WWI. When I saw this book, I was excited to dive into it, because I have read several of these authors and had not heard of the others. I normally like to have an anthology with me, because I find the shorter stories a nice way to transition between books, or an even better way to wait in line or at the doctor office. Short stories are a great way to squeeze in reading when time is limited. This collection was powerful and well-written. I have added a few new authors to my must-read list.

Sasee found some fun new ideas to get your planning started! The Dress
2019 Wedding Trends
Everyone loves pockets and now wedding dresses have them too! Brides sporting pockets were all over the runways during Bridal Fashion Week. This year, many brides will forgo classic cuts and simple fabrics with strapless wedding dresses and be wearing gowns with sleeves. Think “refined minimalism.”
The Entertainment
Instead of yet another photo booth, entertain your guests with a caricaturist – if there are a lot of children this could be a big hit. Or maybe a magician is more your style or even an Elvis impersonator!
The Food
Food trucks have had their moment but couples are still looking for laidback ways to offer simple tasty food. Sharing plates and farm-to-fork concepts are both proving popular for 2019 weddings. As is the rise in dessert tables.
The Napkins (Think Eco-friendly)
Linen napkins are so much nicer looking than paper and now you have a good reason to use them. Sustainability is more than just a fashion trend and the wedding industry is taking notice, switching from the likes of plastic straws to paper and glass alternatives. Expect a rise in eco-friendly weddings in 2019, featuring flowers that can be replanted, organic menus and minimal plastic.
The Flowers
Today’s bride and groom are more likely to do things their way – with little thought to tradition – pale pink, blush and taupe flowers are increasingly replacing classic white blooms as a bride’s wedding flower of choice. Expect to see lots of peony bouquets this year – this is a versatile flower that suits any style of wedding, from the most formal to rustic garden parties. Later in the year, when the peonies are harder to find, look for roses, dahlias or ranunculus.
The Favor
Edible wedding favors are fun and easy to personalize. Cookies are popular or small jars of homemade jams and jellies. For a totally different vibe, hire a cigar roller or even an ice cream truck for a fun takeaway.
The Exit
Be unforgettable with a smoke bomb exit. These can be customized with your favorite colors, leaving a cloud of dreamy pigment in their wake. For greatest impact, do this one in the daylight.
One Perfect Moment Make it Caledonia
Tucked beneath giant moss-draped oaks on the site of an 18th century rice plantation, is one of the most stunning settings on the Carolina coast. It’s called Caledonia, and it has become one of the most sought after venues for weddings and special events. If you are planning a wedding, rehearsal dinner or anniversary celebration, make it unforgettable. Make it Caledonia.

An Elopement Proposal by Jeffery Cohen
come there aren’t any pictures of your wedding?” I asked my when I was ten years old. Howmother
“
“That’s because your Dad and I eloped.” “Eloped? What’s eloped?”
She shook her head and said, “That’s a long story.” I settled in at the kitchen table. “I love stories.” My mother sighed, took her apron off and sat down beside me. “Well, I had just turned twenty-one. I was the baby in a family of twelve, the only one still living at home, and my mother was doing her best to keep me there. My sister, your Aunt Helen, lived one town over and was renting a room to a young man that she wanted me to meet. Your Dad. Oh, he was handsome and friendly, a real gentlemen. So we started to see each other. We went bike riding, to the movies, out to eat. He took me to dances, even though he had two left feet,” she smiled. “After about three months, I knew your Dad was the man for me. One night we were sitting on the swing on the front porch. The air smelled of honeysuckle, the crickets chirping, romance was in the air, so I said, ‘Ever think about settling down?’ ‘Settling down?’ he asked as if he didn’t even understand what the words meant. Now, you have to realize that your Dad was not a man to stay in one place for very long. When he was just sixteen, he hopped a box car and hoboed from the East coast to the West. Then he spent a couple of years in the Merchant Marines sailing around the world. No, I don’t believe that settling down was in his plans, but, like I always say. There’s no harm in asking. ‘Wouldn’t you like to find a nice little town where you could set down roots?’ I continued. ‘Little town? I guess.’ He shrugged. ‘Buy a nice little house?’ I added.
I can still see the sweat running down his nervous face. I’d scared him off. We didn’t see each other for a while. Oh, I sulked and cried, promising myself that somehow, some way, we’d wind up husband and wife. My mother said I was too young to leave home, let alone even think about marriage. When she warned me that she simply would not allow it, I knew it was up to me to make the first move, so I sent your father a telegram.” “A telegram? Why didn’t you just call him on the phone?” I asked. “Your Dad didn’t have a phone. Besides, a telegram was so much more official.” She sat straight up and saluted. “So I crossed my fingers and sent him a telegram explaining how I felt and then...I proposed.” “YOU proposed?” “That’s right, I proposed. I asked him to marry me! I said we could just run off and tie-the-knot, and to my surprise, your Dad accepted my proposal! We eloped the next day. Like a knight in shining armor on a white horse he whisked me away to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. We filled out all the necessary paper work and found ourselves standing in front of the Justice of the Peace. ‘Do you, Elizabeth, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?’ the justice asked me. ‘I do,’ I answered, almost giggling, I was so happy. ‘And, do you, George, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?’ Your father just stood there, as if he were in a trance and didn’t even hear the words. The justice tried again. ‘George, do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?’ Your father just stared, a blank look on his face. That’s when I nudged him with my elbow.
‘With a nice little wife and a bunch of little kids running around?’
‘Uh- huh,’ he answered, snapping out of his daze. Not I do. Not even yes. Just uh-huh... but that uh-huh was good enough for me, and good enough for the state of Pennsylvania.”
‘A little wife with a bunch of little kids. I guess...l guess...I guess I’m feeling just a little tired. I should probably be heading home.’ And he disappeared.
And by the power vested in that justice, he pronounced my mother and father, husband and wife.
‘Little house? Sure, I guess.’ He nodded.

Cookie Table by Joan Leotta
R
ecently I’ve noticed that what was a part of hometown Pittsburgh, seems to be sweeping the nation at weddings – the cookie table. One of the beauties of this trend is that it costs very little to add, is a delight to guests of all ages and leftovers can be packaged up for guests and others. Much of the time, the cookie table is an offering from the guests and relatives of the couple who are tying the knot – so, no catering contract, no cost except set-up of the table at the reception, and provision of plates, napkins and some nice boxes or bags for leftovers. In some cases, the guests provide plates to serve the cookies and in others, they bring the cookies in boxes and the facility provides serving plates. Be sure to have enough folded (tent fold) cards to label the cookies as to who brought them and what they are (especially if some of your guests have food allergies). Be sure to ask the facility if outside food, like the cookies, is permitted. At the last wedding I attended, the lovely couple offered a wide variety of bought and home-made cookies – colorful creations iced in the bride’s colors, and or the colors of spring, chocolate creations of various types and sizes and a number of German and Italian specialty cookies since the bride came from an Italian-German family. Cookies donated from the Bride’s side and friends mingled deliciously with those brought from folks on the Groom’s side. In this case, the bride knew that her potential donors were a varied group so with the exception of requesting pizzella from a favorite Aunt, she knew that there would be many and varied types. And if three plates of chocolate chip showed up? No worries. There would be children at the wedding and those were likely to be among the first devoured. Several plates were isolated – the nut free ones – and several were labeled as gluten free.
Thinking about a cookie table for your big event? Think smaller cookies and lots of cookies – people will want to sample three or four kinds, but in smaller bites. Think plain and decorated. Ask your pals to submit up to four dozen each, specifying that you would prefer small ones. If you are one of the folks asked to provide cookies and are not given an assignment, I like to make thumbprints. They are colorful and tasty. Joan’s Nut-free Thumbprint Cookies (adapted from all-recipe version) Note: Double this to take to a wedding) Ingredients ¼ cup butter, softened ¼ cup margarine ¼ cup packed brown sugar 1 egg, separated ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/3 cup of any red jam 1/3 cup any orange jam 1/4 teaspoon salt Directions Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Grease cookie sheets. Separate egg, reserving egg white. Cream butter and margarine, sugar and egg yolk. Add vanilla, flour and salt, mixing well. Shape dough into balls. Roll in egg white. Place on cookie sheets about 2 inches apart. Bake for 5 minutes. Remove cookies from oven. With thumb, dent each cookie. Put jelly or preserves in each thumbprint. Bake for another 8 minutes.

Tripping Along T

he nuptials, to take place, were for the lovely sister of my lovely daughter-in-law, whose family possesses savoir-faire and hosts such events effortlessly, stylishly and perfectly. Also, they hired a small army of ubiquitous wedding planners holding clip boards.
I picked myself up and brushed myself off.
My first encounter with theses “sans pareil” wedding planners occurred the eve of the wedding when we gathered in the lobby of our motel to be shuttled to the Weekapaug for a welcoming party.
“Oh yes! It helps to have padding. A thin old lady would have broken a hip. Not me.”
Once there we were escorted to the pool where the welcoming party was. Open bar, food stations, travelling waiters with tempting amuse-bouche to consume – an inviting feast! “My heels are killing me,” I whispered. “Why did you wear those?” “What was I supposed to wear with this cocktail get-up?” “Comfortable shoes?” “Comfortable shoes don’t go with my ensemble. Look around at the other ladies’ shoes. You see anyone sporting clod-hopper, comfortable shoes?” My husband moseyed off to get a local beer. I followed him and soon was imbibing too. The area filled up. Groups clustered around the pool with barely enough room for an older, chubby woman, even one with sensible shoes, to sneak past. “I’m afraid I’m going to topple into that pool if I attempt to score another libation.” “I’ll get it,” he offered. “If you insist,” I said, relieved. That evening we mingled and mixed and chatted and laughed and played the “Do you know so and so from such and such place?” Dark descended. Dodging the pool became trickier. Finally, the last shuttle back to our motel was announced. Our son and daughter-in-law, who showed up after the rehearsal dinner, had long since departed. “Time to go?” I asked. My husband followed me out through the building to the narrow, slippery stone steps which led to a path to the parking lot. Tastefully small lights lit the way, barely. Just as I placed my heel on the last step, my ankle turned, and I tumbled. I landed in a bush. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied a woman hustling past. In front of me was a wedding planner with clipboard and worried expression.
28
“Are you all right, Mrs. Hoffman?” the doe-eyed wedding planner solicitously inquired.
‘You’re fine?” she said and reached out a hand to guide me the rest of the way. “That was a graceful tumble, wasn’t it?” “Oh yes, ma’am. You’re ok?” “Really yes. My spouse was an immense help.” She looked a bit quizzical at my remark. So, I unceremoniously climbed onto the bus and was thankful it wasn’t full of gawkers. When time to get off, a different wedding planner greeted us. “Let me help you,” she said. “Geesh, these gals must have walkie talkies,” I murmured. As we walked to our room, I added, “Good thing no one really saw me. How embarrassing!” The next day my husband and I roamed the beach and ate lunch at the Andrea, which had a crowd reminiscent of what we’re used to in North and South Carolina. Tattooed folks. (Only one significant difference was the folks at Emerald Isle are in stellar shape as a lot of them hail from Camp Lejeune, and those young marines look like pin-ups in a Playgirl Calendar! These guys resembled Harvey Weinstein.) Anyway, we dressed for the wedding. “You’re not going to wear those black heels again?” “No way. I’m wearing another uncomfortable pair – silver.” He grimaced.
Just as I placed my heel on the last step, my ankle turned, and I tumbled. I landed in a bush. Sasee.com
So, we approached the shuttle. Two wedding planners – I’d not previously laid eyes on – were at the door checking off names. After I said mine, one looked up, concerned, “How are you today, Mrs. Hoffman?” Boy, word travels fast. “Let me assist you,” she offered. “I’m fine, really.” I clambered up the stairs – like a mere 60-year-old, in sensible shoes – might.
April 2019
We found seats near the front. An older woman leaned toward us from across the aisle. “Are you bruised?” she inquired. “Say what?” “Bruised? From your fall!” “No, no, I’m not. Thank you. I’d only drunk two beers,” I added in my defense. The service was beautiful; my son didn’t mess up the scripture he read from the pulpit, and everyone laughed when his two-year-old – the flower girl – seated with us, blurted out “Come, Daddy!” After the ceremony, buses awaited to drive us to the Watch-a-ma-call-it Inn which I’m pretty sure I’d called a half -dozen different names the night before, including, Wikipedia and Wiki-links Hotel. A wedding planner stationed herself at the door of the bus. “Watch your step!” “I’ll do that.” I recognized her as the one who saw me sail into the bushes the night before. I confided, “I’d only two beers, maybe three.” She smiled understandingly. “Or four,” whispered Mr. Helpful. I danced with my son and once with the bride’s father, all the while cognizant of my heels, weak ankles and alcoholic consumption. Never have
I attended a more joyful, swinging and swaying, dynamic fete than this one! Enervated but happy, we were ready to board the bus. As I teetered -tottered out the door down the same, small, three dimly lit steps leading to the path to the car lot, I saw to the left of me the friendly bush that caught me the night before. No worse for wear. The ever-present wedding planner focused, like a laser, on me. Faces gazing out the bus window were fixated on me, too, watching… His hand grabbed me by the elbow and guided me down the path. As I climbed the steps in the bus, with my hubby behind me, an aunt of the bride said, “You know, I tripped and fell at the last wedding up here and broke my shoulder.” I smiled at her. “Tripping hazards are everywhere!” And then I looked down at the wedding planners. “Reporters too.”

Finding Love after 45 Years
I
by Louise Pistole
t was the beginning of my junior year of high school when a local grocery store advertised they were opening, and students were encouraged to apply for positions. I was hired as a cashier along with a number of my friends. Within a few days, I met a fellow student whom I did not know from school. Randy had been hired as a stocker/bag boy. He was super cute, and I was thrilled when he talked to me. It wasn’t long before we were dating and loving life. Our junior and senior years of high school flew by. He gave me a cedar chest for graduation, and in my annual he wrote that the happiest day of his life would be the day we were married. Then things fell apart on us, and we went our separate ways. I never knew what happened to Randy through the years. I married and had a son. My business consumed much of my life. After my son finished college, and I was divorced, I did little besides work but that kept me busy and occupied. After twenty-one years of being single again, I was at home one night when my phone pinged with a text. It was a girlfriend who grew up across the street from me. Her text read, “Do you remember Randy?” Oh my gosh, what did she know? Why was she asking? My heart stood still in time.
Jill had run across him on Classmates and had messaged him. She relayed to me that his wife had passed away a couple of years before. My mind started racing; my heart was already racing. I was not a member of Classmates but I jumped on the website to check out this development. Randy and I exchanged a few cordial comments over the next couple of weeks. Finally, he offered his phone number if I wanted to chat. But I must digress to almost exactly a year before this happened. I was having the guest room painted and the closet was packed with boxes that had been there almost forty years. What a chore to go through all of that, but I wanted the closet painted at the same time. Actually, I threw away
95% of what was there, but I found one thing I decided to save. It was my high school scrapbook. There were pictures of Jill and many other girlfriends. And then there were pictures and souvenirs from the two and a half years that I dated Randy. I looked through the scrapbook but didn’t think much about it. I still had no idea what had happened to him. Instead of tossing it, I put it on the bookshelf in my den. Now a year later, I have Randy’s phone number, and I didn’t hesitate to call and leave him a voicemail. When I did get to talk to him, stories of our time together so many years ago made the moments fly. He suggested we get together for lunch but didn’t immediately follow up on the offer. It was nerve wracking but we both knew a lot of time had passed; we are grown-ups now, and we were avoiding potential disappointment. The day did finally come when we decided to meet. As he walked up my sidewalk, with flowers in hand, we were taken back forty-five years. He was amazed to see I still had the cedar chest and a scrapbook of memories. It was almost as if we knew there was no turning back this time. We were instantly connected and almost inseparable from that moment. But there’s more to the story. Except for a few years when Randy was out of state, we were living and working in the same space. He was coming in one door as I was going out the other door, so to speak. For ten years, he had a meeting once a week three doors down from my office. He had been in food and beverage sales and worked all the restaurants in my small town. At one time, he lived in the apartments that were located beside my office building. There was even a time when our yards were separated by a fence. How had our paths not crossed before now? Six months after we reconnected, Randy asked me to marry him. After a ten month engagement, we were married in a beautiful ceremony on the beach. We know it was God’s perfect timing for us to reconnect at this point in our lives. Life has come full circle.

A Wedding to Remember: Jane and Dan Adams by Leslie Moore
I
“ t’s just our story, it’s no big deal,” began Jane Adams as we sat down to talk about the love that has been the cornerstone of her life for more than 50 years. In a world where much of what we hear is negative and bad news seems to be the norm, Jane’s beautiful story is a very big deal. From a marriage performed by a justice of the peace, with only their parents attending, this couple built a wonderful life based on love and faith in each other. Jane and Dan Adams met in high school in Durham, North Carolina, and attended the Durham High School prom together. Their courtship was sweet and very typical of the 1960s. “My best friend’s dad owned the town’s Ford dealership. Every year she got a brand new convertible, Carolina blue with white leather interior. On Sunday afternoons when the weather was good my friend would call me and ask if I wanted to go riding around. She liked one of my good friends, so I would call him and ask if he wanted to go – and she would call Danny!”
32
Both Jane and Dan were raised by divorced parents, and while Dan’s birth father wasn’t in the picture, he did have a wonderful stepfather. Besides his stepfather, Dan was the first member of his family to graduate high school – and he went on to get his college degree and a master’s degree. Maybe their background is why this couple was determined to make it work, to make their love last a lifetime. Durham was a small town then. Burlington Industries employed many residents and there was a wonderful downtown. Duke University brought culture and an annual influx of students. “Danny was from East Durham and I was from West Durham,” Jane told me laughing. “Mom told me not to date anyone from East Durham, and I ended up marrying a boy from the wrong side of town!” Jane was only 18 when she and Dan married in 1968. “We went to Dillon, South Carolina, to get married. There you could apply for a marriage

license one day and marry the next. It wasn’t an actual elopement because we told our parents, and they went with us. I borrowed a white dress from my sister, Cammy, but we didn’t take a single picture!” “I was out of high school and attending a technical school,” Jane remembered, and as she spoke, her words conveyed the deep love she had then and still has for her beloved Danny. “We were both working and going to school, and Dan had three part time jobs. We lived with my mom, helping with the bills and the housework. After our first son, Steve, was born, we moved into a community center that had an attached two room apartment. We were custodians of the community center in exchange for really cheap rent.” “Both of our mothers married young,” Jane said as she told me more about the family. “Dan’s mother worked second shift at Liggett & Myers catching cigarettes off of a line. It was hard work. On Saturday morning everyone pitched in to clean the house then his mom would go to the hairdresser, do her shopping, buy groceries and then come home and prepare a feast. That’s the way it was back then. Everyone worked hard.” After Dan graduated from UNC Chapel Hill, the couple moved to Eugene, Oregon, where Dan pursued his master’s degree. The couple soon had their second son, Brandon, and their family was complete. Life was not always easy, but it was perfect for them. “When we came back from Eugene, Dan saw an ad in the paper and applied for a job with GTE. He worked there for six years and then started with PepsiCo. His work required us to move – a lot. Our move here was our 23rd!” Jane went on to tell me about their shortest stay which was in Atlanta. “We’d only been in the house for six weeks, it was the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and Dan’s family was coming for the holiday. Dan came home and said we’re moving to Kansas. By then I was used to it and it didn’t really faze me – I called the real estate agent, we sold the house and moved right after Christmas.”
celebration and a seed was planted. “About ten months before our anniversary, Dan woke up and said we should talk about this wedding thing, he thought it was something we should do.” So, after fifty years, Jane began planning the wedding of her dreams. “It was wonderful. I am so glad we did it. We had friends give us a really nice party on Thursday, and we were remarried on Friday, March 2nd, 2018 at 5 pm. So many friends came from out of town.” The ceremony was held at Belin United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet, and the reception was at Pawleys Plantation. Surrounded by their sons, daughters-in-laws and grandchildren, along with 200 other friends and family, love once again won the day. “Our grandson Benjamin walked me down the aisle. Zoe, our granddaughter, was my maid of honor, and Cameron and Bella, our other two granddaughters, sang. It was perfect.” I asked Jane to share what she thought was the key to her long and happy marriage. “We laugh a lot. We don’t go to bed mad – we stay up and get it worked out. And when it’s over, it’s over,” Jane told me empathically. She continued, saying, “I’m a very black and white person, while Dan can see many sides of a situation. We complement each other.” As we finished our conversation, I asked Jane what was next for her – was there anything more she wanted to accomplish? “My greatest success is seeing the men my boys have become, the husbands and fathers they’ve become. There’s nothing more I need.”
I asked Jane if it was hard helping Dan while he finished his education and then building her life around his career. “We knew he had to have his education for us to succeed and take care of our family. That was the focus – his education and then his career.” With a smile that belied her words, she continued, saying, “I did most everything around the house – I just wanted him to go to work and do the best he could.” The couple finally settled in Dallas, and Jane was content. She hoped to never move again. “I was happy, taking art classes and loving it, I had a great Bible study group.” But, Dan’s career required one more move – to Singapore. And, from there, Dan retired to do consulting work and the couple moved to Pawleys Island, fulfilling Dan’s promise to his bride that they would live wherever she chose when he retired. Three years before Jane and Dan’s gold anniversary, they travelled to Mexico City to their daughter-in-law’s parents’ 50th anniversary

A Conversation with Kristy Woodson Harvey by Leslie Moore
A
s a lifelong lover of books and reading, it’s always an honor to meet an author whose carefully crafted paragraphs stir my imagination and touch my heart. Recently, I had the opportunity to chat with bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey as she prepares for the release of her fifth book, A Southern Side of Paradise, and a month long book tour. Always a fan of her well developed characters and southern flair, I now know she’s just as nice as she is talented. Kristy is excited for readers to experience another book set in Peachtree Bluff, her fictional town. “Peachtree Bluff is an amalgam of towns that I’ve lived in and loved. Each book is told from a different sister’s viewpoint, giving the readers an entirely new perspective. I believe readers will enjoy seeing how memories play with us.” When I asked Kristy about the evolution of her writing, she laughed and told me, “I never knew I wanted to be a writer! I studied journalism
38
at UNC Chapel Hill, and my plans were to work in that field. But I got this book idea that just wouldn’t let me go. Finally, I decided I would write a book for fun, just to say I’d done it. I never thought it would be published. But I was captivated by the characters as they came to life on the page – I fell in love with the book. So I got a literary agent and started the process.” This gifted writer paused as she was sharing this story, and continued, saying, “Seriously I pinch myself every day. I never in a million years thought I’d get one book deal, much less have my fifth coming out. It blows my mind every single day.” Married with a seven year old son, Will, Kristy and her husband (also Will) live in Beaufort, North Carolina. Before Hurricane Florence brought destruction to the North Carolina coast the family made their home in a waterfront historic house, built in 1903 – a house that Kristy had completely renovated. “We live in one of the highest spots in town, but lost two chimneys and the roof hatch on the top floor during the
Sasee.com
April 2019
storm – it rained inside the house for a week. The exterior of the house is fine, but the inside was 75% gutted. We’ve had to redo everything.” The good news is, the house will be livable this month, and the Harveys can move back in while the remaining renovations are completed. This isn’t Kristy’s first experience with renovating a historic home. She and Will lived in homes she renovated in Kinston, and New Bern, North Carolina, before settling in Beaufort. Kristy’s mom, Beth Woodson is also a “design enthusiast” and renovated her own historic home. Mother and daughter decided to blog about the experience at Design Chic, and to their surprise, it became a success. “This was before Pinterest was popular and it was a way for us to share photos and ideas. We didn’t really expect people to read it!” You would think between being an author and a design blogger Kristy would have enough on her plate, but she is passionate about giving back. “I do a lot of fundraising, especially on book tours. My motherin-law recently died from breast cancer, so helping women who can’t afford screening is important to me. I recently spoke at a luncheon to benefit the New Hanover Center Pink Ribbon Project that provides free mammograms.” And on June 1st, Peachtree Bluff, Kristy’s fictional town, will take over Beaufort to raise money for the historical society to help repair the damage done by Hurricane Florence. “My fictional town has a lot of similarities to Beaufort,” Kristy said. “We will have tours, lunch, dinner and a VIP cocktail party.”
