The Grand Strand is known as a destination for shoppers, with funky boutiques stocked with one-of-a-kind items, destination shopping centers filled with brightly lit, glittering stores and almost everything in between. Window shopping through Myrtle Beach’s upscale urban village is the perfect activity for a beautiful Grand Strand afternoon, especially when it’s followed by a relaxing hour enjoying a beverage and a snack at one of the many unique restaurants and bistros.

Families can spend the day “building a bear” or choosing the perfect outfit for that important first day of school. Take a day for retail therapy – you’ll be delighted with the results!

Shopping Destinations

Every year, thousands of visitors to our area come for one thing and one thing only–shopping! Whether it’s time for new school clothes or to spruce up your golf wardrobe, there are plenty of choices available and bargains galore for the savvy shopper. Coastal Grand Mall in Myrtle Beach has more than 100 stores, restaurants and a multi-screen movie theater. You’ll find plenty of your favorite stores as well as some unusual shops and boutiques. Pace yourself–there is another mall in the area. Myrtle Beach Mall on the north end of Myrtle Beach features Bass Pro Shop, a guy’s favorite hangout. It’s also where Carolina Improv Company performs to sold-out crowds.

In 1946, Justin and Eloise Plyler opened a small gift shop on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Now, the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove is the largest gift shop on the East Coast, with 26,000 square feet and 70,000 items, ranging from shark’s teeth to Hummel figurines. Before opening the store, Mr. Plyler loved to watch the dolphins through his telescope and always thought they looked happy and appeared to be smiling. This is where the store’s unique name originated. This is true homegrown destination shopping. Bargain shoppers, you have come to the right place! Myrtle Beach has two

outlet malls filled with bargains from your favorite factory stores. Refuel with a quick bite at one of several restaurants. One of the most unique shopping destinations along the Grand Strand is Market Common. Located on the site of the old Air Force Base, Market Common has fine dining restaurants, a movie theater and great shopping set in a beautifully designed urban village environment that encourages walking from place to place. Special events are held throughout the year, so check to see what’s planned! For a day-long destination, head to Broadway at the Beach. You’ll find plenty of shopping, along with attractions, dining and nightlife. If the day’s shopping has left you exhausted, enjoy an adult beverage at Senor Frog’s or Margaritaville. Be sure to check the website for special events throughout the summer months. A little farther north, Barefoot Landing is located on the Intracoastal Waterway, with shopping, dining and an ever changing lineup of entertainment. On the north end, Coastal North Towne Center has more than 30 exciting stores, some not found anywhere else along the Strand. The Grand Strand shopping experience is waiting!

Homegrown and Fabulous

We all love searching for, and finding, the unique and different while exploring shops and boutiques. The Grand Strand has homegrown, locally-constructed items and family owned shops that you’ll love.

The idea for the hammock came from native South Carolinian Joshua John Ward, a riverboat captain who found the lumpy, grassfilled mattresses on his boat too hot for the sultry coastal summers, so he designed a hammock so strong and comfortable that its handmade design has endured for more than a century. Stop by the Original Hammock Shop in Hammock Shops Village and watch local craftsman make hammocks, expertly weaving rope to make one of the most comfortable and durable hammocks sold. Local entrepreneurs, Brian and Sassy Henry run the lovely Sea

View Inn in Pawleys Island and also own a local take-out restaurant. In 2006, they began selling Sassy’s recipe for a delicious version of classic southern pimento cheese called Palmetto Cheese. Today this popular spread is available in 49 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico, at 9,200 locations. Craft beer lovers will enjoy trying Myrtle Beach’s delicious brews at New South Brewing. Visit their tap room for special brews unavailable elsewhere. South of the Grand Strand, the stately City of Georgetown has a rich history and a thriving downtown area. Ripley’s Penguin Playhouse!

Visitors to Ripley’s Aquarium can now see African Penguins in the new, 5,500 square foot expansion, the largest in the aquarium’s 20 year history. The African penguin habitat has floor-to-ceiling viewing glass and a 360-degree crawl tunnel for guests to waddle through. This addition also includes a brand-new Ocean Wonders gallery housing fascinating species of fish from all over the world. The African penguin is one of the most endangered penguins in the world–numbers have declined by 60 percent in the last 28 years. Welcoming Ripley’s new colony in 2020 is just the beginning of the Aquarium’s conservation efforts, as an on-site penguin nursery will house and care for baby penguins, helping Ripley’s Aquarium foster a growing flock. Don’t just visit the penguins – enjoy a unique experience! In Penguin

Encounters, visitors will interact– and even pet–Ripley’s most adorable creatures beak-to-beak while learning about this species from Aquarium staff experts. Culinary Creations

ell-prepared and delicious, a good meal is one of life’s pleasures, and an important part of any vacation is enjoying your favorite foods. Locally, trained chefs prepare a dizzying variety of cuisines for your dining pleasure. Seafood, of course, is served in every way imaginable, from the traditional Murrells Inlet or Calabash seafood platter to fresh and tasty sushi or a perfectly grilled piece of freshly-caught fish drizzled with a rich, complex sauce.

A regional favorite, shrimp and grits, comes to your table piping hot, creamy and – unforgettable! Oysters are another local favorite and depending on the time of year, can be eaten steamed, fried or on the half shell. Our local blue crabs are a delicacy steamed, prepared as crab cakes or in she crab soup. Be sure to take note of the chef ’s specials wherever you choose to dine – these are usually a good choice and are only available for a short time.

Barbeque is another popular South Carolina dish, but even within the state, there is an ongoing and sometimes heated debate over which type of sauce is the best. Our coastal area prefers a spicy, vinegarbased sauce, and can be found at many local barbeque restaurants, paired with sweet potatoes, coleslaw, rice and, always, banana pudding.

Mexican food, and there are plenty of choices, from easily recognizable chains to locally-owned cantinas. More for the grown-ups and a favorite of locals, our Thai restaurants are some of the best in the region. From cheesy, tomato sauce-covered Italian to a tender, juicy filet, there is a meal for every appetite along the Grand Strand.

Cook Your Own Seafood Feast! Seafood is relatively easy to prepare, and it’s fun to gather the family around the table at your vacation home or condo for delicious, home cooked, seafood! Always a crowd pleaser, shrimp is a popular choice. South Carolina has two shrimp seasons. The first runs from May through August, when smaller, brown shrimp are harvested. The popular white shrimp season begins in September and lasts through December. With a container of shrimp boil, a few lemons and cocktail sauce, peel and eat shrimp can be on the table in no time.

Grouper, a popular, mild white fish, is in season from May through December. This fish is delicious grilled, fried or sautéed. With fish, the key is not to overcook. And don’t forget to include your favorite sauce. There are so many places along our coast to buy fresh local seafood. Seven Seas Seafood, located at 3476 Hwy 17 Business in Murrells Inlet prides itself on seafood fresh from the Atlantic. (See ad on page 19). Or try any of our local seafood markets. To catch your own dinner, maybe try your hand at crabbing – cooking and eating crabs is a fun way to spend a day. While crabbing is best in the fall, crabs are in season all year long. Nets are widely available; you’ll need a bucket and a few chicken necks for bait. If this sounds like a lot, try a visit to Myrtle Beach State Park where rangers will help you get started and explain the crab fishing regulations – and all the equipment is available for purchase on site. Stop and pick up all the extras at one of two Piggly Wiggly locations – at 122 Highway 17 in Surfside Beach and 1700 Kings Hwy in Myrtle Beach. (See ad on page 3).

Peel and Eat Shrimp 2 or 3 pounds of fresh local shrimp (or as much as your family can eat!) Lemon wedges Shrimp boil seasoning, like Old Bay Wash shrimp well, pat dry with paper towels and sprinkle with seasoning – not too heavily. Bring water to boil in a steamer pot, not deep enough to cover the steamer basket. Add shrimp and a few lemon wedges to the basket and steam for 5 minutes. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the cooked shrimp and serve as soon as you can handle it. If you don’t have a steamer pot, you can cook the shrimp in boiling water with the seasoning and lemon wedges put in the water before adding the shrimp. Drain and continue with the fresh lemon juice. 19

Myrtle Beach has a New Place to “Hangout!”

The Hangout, a fun restaurant, retail and entertainment venue, is coming to Broadway at the Beach in late fall of 2020. Using locally sourced ingredients, the menu will feature seafood, burgers, sandwiches and tacos – and guests can enjoy live music year-round on indoor and outdoor stages. The Hangout will offer family friendly entertainment including dancing and contests led by energetic cast members, fire pits and courtyard games. Guest will find fun and unique items in the retail store and a variety of art installations created especially for Myrtle Beach. Especially for the kids, special events including a Pirates and Princesses breakfast, treasure hunts and entertainment led by “pirates” and princesses” will be offered all summer long.

Originally established in 2008 in Gulf Shore, Alabama, The Hangout is a family friendly restaurant and entertainment venue with a focus on multi-generational activities and fun. You can find kids and grandparents dancing on tables, laughing, singing and making life long memories. It’s a throwback to simpler days of analog family vacations that highlight the American family vacation experience. city, take a walking tour and learn more about our county seat. Be sure to explore the local art scene in Conway. The downtown area has wonderful galleries and events throughout the year. The Rice Museum on Front Street in Georgetown is located in the historic clock tower and explores the area’s fascinating rice culture. The Georgetown County Museum highlights nearly 300 years of local culture, and The Kaminski House, built in the late 1700s, features a large collection of fine antiques and still has many of the original floors and moldings. Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival

The 45th edition of the annual Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival will be held September 25-27 at the castle by the sea in Huntington Beach State Park.

Live musical entertainment and a variety of foodstuffs are part of the fun, but the stars of the show are the artists and their work. A lineup of 100 or so fine artists and craftspeople are selected by a jury to show and sell their work – a skilled and creative group from around the country who work in metal, clay, canvas, wearable fabric and more. The festival spotlights the park’s natural beauty and the amenities offered to visitors year-round. Located along U.S. 17 in Murrells Inlet, Huntington Beach State Park offers several hundred thousand

visitors a year one of the most pristine beaches on the Grand Strand. The 2,500-acre park’s freshwater lagoon, salt marsh and maritime forest also are outstanding examples of the state’s natural coastal environment, and the park is widely regarded as one of the best birding sites along the East Coast. Its natural history is highlighted in the park’s environmental education center. Admission is $15 for adults, and your ticket allows you to return for all three days of the festival. For 30 years, Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art (PIFMA) has presented world class entertainment in Pawleys Island. Founded by Dr. Lee Minton in 1991, this event has grown from a one concert event to three weekends packed full of well known musicians and a smaller series of winter concerts. Held under an open air tent, seating over 1,000 people, the 2020 event will begin on October 8th and present concerts ThursdaySaturday through October 24th.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highly anticipated, nineconcert series features Tavares, Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Temptations Revue and more. Concert-goers are able to purchase delicious food from area food trucks, as well as a wide selection of beverages. Music lovers from

around the country have made PIFMA an annual event. Much more than concerts, PIFMA is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to bring the arts to all residents of our community. Professional musicians visit area schools, providing mini-concerts and outreach programs each year. College scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors planning to major in the arts, and financial assistance is provided to local schools for arts-related programs and supplies. Carolina Country Music Fest September 17 - 20, 2020

Carolina Country Music Fest (CCMF) is an outdoor country music festival that takes place in June of each year at the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk within the Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion Place. The Thursday Night KickOff Concert is followed by three days of country music performed by today’s biggest stars. The premiere event in 2015 brought in over 20,000 attendees, and has grown every year. Past years have included names like; Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, Florida Georgia Line, Zac Brown Band, Tracy Lawrence, Montgomery

Gentry, Tim McGraw and Keith Urban. The 2020 lineup includes Luke Combs, Darius Rucker, Eric Church, Ashley McBryde, Maddie + Tae to only name a few. CCMF spans 18 acres of coastal area from the boardwalk to Ocean Boulevard, and added a fourth stage in 2018 to accommodate more artists and larger crowds. Immersed in Light:

One Artist’s Vision: Bruce Munro

British artist, Bruce Munro is best known for immersive large-scale light-based installations inspired largely by his interest in shared human experience. For 40 years, he’s recorded his ideas and images in sketchbooks, and his delight in the world around him provides continuous inspiration. Brookgreen Gardens will host an exhibition of his work beginning in May. Versions of the mixed-media installation have popped up around the world since its debut at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2004, everywhere from Uluru, Australia, South Korea, Denmark, and the United Kingdom, to Houston, Nashville, and Columbus, Ohio.

“Brookgreen Gardens got in touch with us,” Bruce began when asked why Brookgreen was chosen as the only East Coast exhibition of his work. “It was a great honor to be asked. I love gardens, and when I first visited Brookgreen, I was struck by the way the art is presented. It’s a good place that puts people at their ease – I particularly like it when people can enjoy art without being scrutinized.” The artist explained the process of creating the installations, saying, “I’m very responsive to space, and every space is unique – with a different climate, different flora and fauna, etc. It’s always very easy for 35

me to find inspiration.” Continuing, he said, “In Brookgreen I feel like I am in a series of outdoor rooms – not all gardens have this feeling. It’s rather like going to a museum.” Most readers will recognize the artist’s Field of Light installation, and Bruce talked about this spectacular artwork. “It’s a very important piece of work for me; it was the start of me working as an adult. I was living with my girlfriend (now wife) in Australia when the idea first landed in my sketch book – it was something I felt I needed to do, and it took me 12 years to complete.” Visitors to Brookgreen will experience Field of Light as 11,700 stems of light in softly moving colors covering the Arboretum.
