About the Cover Artist:
As a self-taught artist, Yvonne Coleman Burney discovered the child inside her, which is an element that has remained a key ingredient in the evolution of her art. Her work has always had a collage focus as she creates colorful storytelling compositions by merging canvas, paper, wood birch boards, quality paints, inks, and digital painting. She explained, “Collaging is more than just creating something digitally or on paper, it is the passion and love for art that comes from my soul. It is truly my voice and a way of expression for me.” Stereotypes and myths are challenged in her work and her inspiration and motivation often come from her life experiences. She lives to create and explore, and the more she shares her art with others, the more she feels that she has found the one thing that sets her soul free with wings to fly. As she continues to learn and grow in her art, she hopes her viewers will see and feel more significant transformations as well. 4 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022

from the Editor Charles Wright had the right idea when he wrote the classic, soul-funk hit “Express Yourself” that made its grand debut in 1970. The song is timeless and so is the melodious message. My favorite verse is, “Some people have everything, and other people don’t, but everything don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t the thing you want.” I believe the point of this lyric (and the song in general) is that every person’s expression is different because everyone is unique in their own way. Wright wanted to specifically shine a light on the fact that there is no sense in copying someone else when you could be much happier by embracing your originality instead. Personally, I have quite a few ways I like to express myself outside of writing. One very important way is through music and movement such as baton twirling and dancing, an expression I share with many friends. Another way I display myself is through my home décor. My ideal taste is a blend of boho and eclectic with a rich mix of color, texture, and vintage. The last, most obvious way I show off my personality is through my clothing and accessories. I love bright, colorful attire as well as fun jewelry, sunglasses, and purses that make a statement. I learned a long time ago that fitting in was not my style and that I am much more satisfied in life when I am being my genuine self. Regardless of how you prefer to do so, expressing your creativity can play a significant role in your self-awareness and overall well-being. It is a way we can align our inner selves with our outward presentation. Take a look at Sasee’s 2022 Fashion and Home Trends consisting of beautiful pieces from our local shops that will inspire you to express yourself authentically and unapologetically. Life is your ultimate canvas, why would you not paint it just the way you like?

Lady Luck & Fashion by Erika Hoffman
On Facebook, my friend Laura posted a score she’d obtained playing WORDLE. “What’s WORDLE?” I asked under the post. She replied by posting the UK link. The first time I played, I guessed the five-letter word in three attempts. A couple of days later I used my first word S-T-O-R-M. The tiles turned over, and I had guessed four letters of the five-lettered word, only they were out of order. I rearranged the pattern in my head and substituted a few other letters for the missing blank, and then I keyed in M-O-I-S- T. Bingo! Got it in two tries. The word “magnificent” popped up to congratulate me. I was atop the world and WORDLE! Yet, when I returned the following day to the game, where I’d been so victorious, it took me all six tries to ascertain the correct word. Did I become so much less intelligent in 24 hours? What I became was – less lucky. That first word containing five of the correct letters was plain good luck. This win got me thinking about lucky breaks and the serendipitous happenings in one’s life that can lead you to magnificent success. I suppose the opposite is true too. Soul-crushing failures might not be entirely your fault. Bad luck happens. Luck seems to favor some more than others. It looks kindly on those adventurous souls who take risks. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained:” the old saw goes. If you never go on that blind date, you might not meet Prince Charming. Be in a place where luck might sashay through the open door carrying the perfect shoes for the ball. Luck favors those who are prepared. If you don’t carry an umbrella when a distant cloud lurks in the sky, you might get drenched and deathly ill. If you don’t wear sunscreen on that hot stunning, yellow polka-dotted bikini-clad, summer day, you might fry with a bad burn which can cause skin cancer and well… that misfortune can lead to worse consequences. 8 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022
Luck favors optimists. If you don’t believe good things will happen and can happen to you, then you might dismiss Lady Luck even when she’s dressed to the nines, knocking on your door. Staying positive, happy, and seeing rainbows at the end of each storm coaxes luck out of every situation. Let’s say your chances are akin to those of Lloyd Christmas, played by Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber, when his love interest assesses the probability of his getting with her is one in a million. Remember Lloyd grins and says: “So, you’re saying I have a chance!” Be like Lloyd. Another friend Becky posted a picture on Facebook of a hat she made with a bird’s nest atop it and some plush blue bird stuffed animals sitting atop the nest. She asked her Facebook friends if she should wear it to a fancy gala held to raise funds for bird habitats. All her pals found her proposed headwear charming, funny, and totally in keeping with Becky’s personality. Me too. Yet, I did add a small piece of advice: Carry a large sack of a purse with you so if you feel awkward with your fashion statement, you can quickly un-don the cap and stash it in the oversized pocketbook. In summary, stay prepared, feel optimistic, and remain adventurous; chances and opportunities will come your way. As to fashion, express yourself. Take a chance to get noticed! If it ends up in a wardrobe malfunction… so what?
Erika Hoffman writes stories which she compiles into anthologies that you can find on Amazon.
White is fine... Anytime!
“No white until Easter” is a fashion rule Sasee women chose to stop following a long time ago. And not only do white jeans match everything, but they also add an elevated touch that blue denim often cannot. White jeans are comfortable and will never go out of style, so if you invest in a pair today, they will probably last you for years to come. The South Ocean High Rise Straight Leg Jean by Lilly Pulitzer is the perfect item to add to your Spring/Summer wardrobe.
All of these pieces can be found at Pink & Red located at 5900 N Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach. Stop by and brighten up your wardrobe for spring and summer! 10 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022

Home Reflections by Betsy L. Haase
Robin and I were new acquaintances with a lot in common. We were both about the same 60 something age and had moved from the northeast to South Carolina with our husbands. I was excited to be invited to tour her brand new house, built to her specifications. Her home, a wash of baby-boy blue, cream, and gold, is beautiful. The tasteful furniture is comfortable. Embroidered sheer curtains diffuse the light streaming in from the many windows. Antique artwork in gold frames hangs strategically on the walls. Well-taken-care-of plants thrive. Her and her husband’s collections are carefully curated. A guest will notice, for example, a delicate teacup in a matching saucer sitting on a bureau. A women’s beaded purse and a pair of white gloves complete this particular vignette. Her home evokes calm. We are close friends now, and every time I visit, I long to take a nap amid the stillness. Robin’s is the home of a grownup with elegance and style. And every time I return to my home, I wonder if my place looks like the residence of a graduate student? A teenager? A kid? Newly married, my husband and I bought our house sight unseen. We studied a few pictures on the internet and had our local real estate agent walkthrough for us. The city lists the house as Tudor Revival which is a fancy name for a little cottage that needed lots of repairs, a new roof, and elbow grease. We pushed up our sleeves and ripped up carpeting, pulled down tile ceilings, and repainted every surface. We tore off the boards blocking the fireplace opening and peeled off outdated wallpaper. Here, time had stopped somewhere in the 1980s. I had no decorating expectations for this little house–just the thrill that it was our place. Now, all the walls throughout are painted the same soft shade of buttery yellow. The woodwork and the old panel doors are white. The ample windows give me the impression that I am living in a terrarium as the sun shines in through the old, wavy glass. In another life and another state, my furnishings had metamorphosed from primitive and country, to French country, to shabby chic. No one wanted any of it when I moved. My husband trash-picked the dining room table. It turns out it is teak. He sanded the top which I then stenciled, stained, and varnished in a Moroccan design. We have rescued a sideboard for the dining room, a chest of drawers for the 12 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022
living room, a diminutive desk for the bedroom–all with a good cleaning, new knobs, and paint. I have forgone formal window treatments and instead have grass shades. Unlike my past life and home, there are no matching pairs of wing chairs, bedside tables, or sets of lamps. Heirloom does not apply to much in this little abode. What you will see is an eclectic collection of art from framed prints to originals, bright colors, a medley of textures, and, here and there, vintage dishes and curios. I am retired and now enjoy a long-term goal of renting space in a vintage vendor market. Through my many journeys in looking for items to sell, I have re-discovered collections from my childhood. I buy china figurines to put on my market shelves, but their sweet faces call to me and end up staying, either tucked into planters or watching me from shelves in my little office. Turn-of-the-last-century dolls, antique teddy bears, and vintage dollhouse miniatures also surround me. I have tried to confine these new-old collections into one room, but, alas, miniatures and an accompanying doll have traveled to two shelves on a bedroom wall. My husband often complains that the doll stares at him! A sense of familiarity and comfort fills me since the moment I stepped in this little house. My husband and I have filled it with the things we love. His acoustic guitars hang on the walls. Books spill out from shelves and magazines from baskets. I enjoy seeing my favorite childhood reads lining the shelves, especially the gold spines of my Little Golden books. Vintage creamers are filled with flowers that I pick from my yard. Pads and notebooks of paper and old juice glasses filled with crayons, paint brushes, and markers are always at the ready for doodling, for writing, for creative play. Decor is important, but at this stage in my life, I want to see happy and even cute and moments of things past. I remember back to when I was twelve, emerging as my own person. Discovering. Learning. Exploring. My cottage in South Carolina evokes the best of the kid in me.

Gets Personal with
Monica Vogel: Bleu “I owe my passion for fashion all to her!” Monica stated when speaking of her mother. Monica grew up in a small town in Illinois, about 50 miles from Chicago. The youngest of four girls, her Mom loved to shop, especially at the famed Marshall Field’s on State Street. Although Monica received a degree in social work from the Loyola University of Chicago (which was the ideal place for her to go to school so she could work at Marshall Field’s on the weekends), it did not take her long to realize social work was not the career for her. She went back to school at the International Academy of Art and Design in Chicago and became a Visual Presentation manager for Marshall Field’s, she explained, “It was always exciting and there were many days like the Devil Wears Prada - it was so much fun!” She owned a boutique in Illinois for fifteen years and sold it when she moved to Sunset Beach, North Carolina. Bleu opened one week later and all of her girlfriends from Illinois came with her to help stage and set it up! The shop has now been open for eight years. “My sense of style really developed while working as a designer. It is black and leggings on a daily basis, a few neutrals, but never color!” she laughed, “Every once in a while, it shows up at Bleu, but we buy an abundance of basic black. We like to mix up brands, styles, and looks because we always want to keep it fresh, and we get deliveries daily!” On their most recent buying trip, they found the colors, patterns, and styles to be amazing. From embroidered shirts and pants to flowing looks and fun collars, it was as if the designers stepped up their games and really worked on their creations. They purchased more items than usual and also sought out new vendors - those with something special. 16 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022
Monica’s real passion is vintage wares. She loves chippy, shabby, upcycled goods and always loves the stories behind these items. Her former shop was mostly vintage and featured in Romantic Homes magazine. Space is limited at Bleu, so she has incorporated vintage on a much smaller scale. Her home decor is very eclectic, a mix of old and new, like quirky things, coin-op machines, one-of-a-kinds, and unique pieces. Vintage is always a great way to personalize a space. Bleu features cottage-style vintage furniture which is great for restyling beach cottages and adding a pop of whimsy to a new build. “Your home and your personal style should reflect who you are,” Monica continued, “No matter what is trending for the season, every purchase should be something you love and look forward to using – something as special as you are!”

Dress Relief by Allison B. Kelly
There are two types of people in this world: those who think cleaning out closets is a chore, and those who consider this project one of life’s most satisfying events. I’m in the latter camp. I live in an older home built in the 1960s and to say my closet is the size of a shoebox isn’t as much hyperbole as it is slight exaggeration. So, I keep out-of-season clothes stored in the basement, and seasonally, I switch things around. Everything I know about the art of organizing a clothes closet, I learned from my mom. For as long as I can remember, Mom has rolled up her sleeves and offered her advice. Together, we empty the closet and then I try everything on. But where Marie Kondo asks, “Does it spark joy?” Mom doesn’t stop there. She is more ruthless in her interrogations. “Is it in good condition?” “Nope.” Goodbye sweaters with pills clinging like unwanted hitchhikers.
it comes to putting clothes together in new or unexpected ways. “Oh, those pants, that deep cabernet color is gorgeous! Try those with the black and white loafers–so sharp!” As I hang the last few items in my now organized closet, it occurs to me that this process is a metaphor for life. We must edit out things that don’t suit us anymore, let go of the things we’ve outgrown, and find the things that are important to keep.
Allison B. Kelly is a teacher and writer who enjoys hiking, traveling, and cleaning out closets. She lives in Virginia with her family.
“Does it fit?” “Nope.” Goodbye heels that pinch and that little black skirt. Anything too tight.
Straight from the garden, cooked perfectly for you!
“But maybe if I lose five pounds…” “No.” Mom says if I can’t or don’t wear clothing for whatever reason, it only adds stress. “Say goodbye to that shirt you ‘keep meaning to’ iron. And you know you don’t iron, Allison. So please stop buying clothes that need to be ironed.” Every year, I swear I’m going to start ironing. And so, we toss clothes into the donation bag. Goodbye suede boots that slump and slouch by mid-afternoon like my posture. Goodbye cute dress that would be perfect for cocktail parties I never actually attend. “Get rid of your mistakes,” Mom says. “So what if they were expensive? Or gifts? Or if the tags are still on them? Give them away. Give them the opportunity to be someone else’s treasure.” After clearing the unwanted items out of my closet, the fun part begins. I like to look “pulled together” as Mom says, “When you look good, you feel good.” Mom is a genius when 30 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022

Scents, You Ask by Lisa M. Hase-Jackson
Whenever I unpack something of my grandmother’s from storage, there wafts a soft, powdery fragrance that calls her to mind and I can see her as though she were standing next to me, black hair pulled back in a headband and wearing one of her signature pastel shirts with perfect darts and a crisp collar. It’s a scent I perceived as a child anytime I was near her dressing table and am always surprised that it still permeates her things some 30 years later. When my mother, a visual artist and attorney, passed away in 2018, I brought home all her paintings, sculptures, stained glass, and pottery as well as family photo albums, handmade quilts, knitted items, antiques, modern art pieces and, because I am an avid reader and a writer, almost all of her books. Her library is uniquely singular and includes that which she most admired and includes everything from Frankl to Jung to Picasso to Stein. One of the ways I keep her close is by periodically choosing one to read and study. Slowly and surely, I am working through the collection and each time I open a box and riffle through it, I have the same uncanny experience as when unpacking something of my grandmother’s, and for a few moments, it’s as if my mother is there beside me offering a suggestion for what to read next. Yet, I cannot name these fragrances. Naturally, my writer’s sensibilities urge me to identify them as a way to fully capture my mother for the poems and essays that I write just as my role as daughter calls me to carry on cherished matrilineal habits and practices. Knowing the names of these fragrances is, in my mind, a way to summon my mother’s metaphysical presence whenever I need a little extra support to face something difficult. One of the ways mom expressed herself was with essential oils. As a child, I remember her picking up bottles here and there from art fairs or music festivals. It was the 70s, so Sandalwood and Patchouli were popular, but so were blended scents like China Rain and Nag Champa, scents that weave through my memories of her, connecting otherwise disparate moments of our lives. 32 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022
A full-time student, and always the free spirit, Mom frequently admonished me to relax and have fun when I was a child, urging me to make art for art’s sake and to embrace the frivolous over the practical. Not one to attend PTA meetings or bake cookies for my class, she instead took me to art exhibits (where there was often free food), indie art movies, and free concerts at a moment’s notice. Her way of supporting me was to enroll us in a variety of free or inexpensive performing arts classes and together we learned how to juggle and mime and perform puppet shows in the street. Her life philosophy was simple: do what makes you happy no matter what others think. I wanted to believe my mother’s philosophy and, when we were together, life was exactly what she made of it: fun. But school was a stark contrast where what others thought did matter and the superficial was supremely important. I was often singled out and bullied because I was the new kid in class or because I came from a broken home. Kids made fun of me for having too many freckles, not enough hair, and pants that were too short. In constant survival mode, I couldn’t focus on school work and did not find value in doing so. I was miserable trying to navigate contrasting worlds and began resenting my mother for not behaving like other mothers who stayed at home and cooked and cleaned. Wistful thinking that directly contradicted with my mother’s goal to enjoy a level of freedom and independence comparable to that which men enjoy and to pursue her education and artistic pursuits without judgment or recrimination. Since inheriting my mother’s collection of perfumes and essential oils, I’ve been trying many of them on and have begun to build an encyclopedic vocabulary of fragrance names that have begun to represent a kind of continued coalescing of our two lives. Here, a fragrance I recognize as one she often wore to the opera and there, one I remember her wearing on one of our many trips to the art gallery. I realized not long ago that with age and ever greater responsibilities, I had grown distant and somewhat disdainful of my mother’s life philosophy losing track of what my heart truly desires. What I’ve learned is that mastering socially sanctioned skills for raising children, working for
wages, and keeping up with politics, skills I believed important and central to maturity, come pretty easily with just a little work. It’s much more challenging, it turns out, to embrace frivolity and disregard what others think, especially when your desires pull you towards any kind of nonconformity or creative pursuit. I see now that I am fortunate to have experienced these freedoms when I was a child as so many are not. Recently, while visiting my daughter and son-in-law in Arizona, we explored mountains and small towns, shopped odd curiosity shops, played games, and laughed at our own jokes until our abs hurt. It was the kind of trip my mother would have loved and orchestrated. When we loaded up into my daughter’s car to head back to the airport in the Toyota Yaris she inherited from my mother that last morning, she commented on how it still smells like Mom. “What did she wear?” she’d asked, and how glad I was to include her in the mystery. “Sandalwood for everyday,” I said, “and patchouli for going out at night. Ralph Lauren for the office, but sometimes Joy. Her favorite, though, which she wore to the opera and ballet, was Chanel #5.”

Lavender by Gloria Mesa
Pink. So, so much pink. When I was little, it was like I lived off the color. Drawing my energy and life force from the vibrantly colored dye. Oh, and dresses, and skirts. I fought with my mother anytime she tried to make me wear pants or shorts, even if it was far too cold to have my legs uncovered. I loved anything lacy, loved the flowing, frilly skirts like those of a flamenco dancer that tickled my ankles and flared out around me like a spinning top whenever I twirled. I used to be a “girly-girl.” I’ve heard that some people consider that an insult, but I never did. Honestly, I can’t understand being insulted by it. What makes being like a girl something to be ashamed of? Why not embrace everything that makes you feminine, even if it’s maybe a little stereotypical, and kind of impractical. Maybe life wants to convince us to let go of our gender identity. To believe it’s somehow “cringey” to love and enjoy being female. I know I gave in to the propaganda. I’m not even sure when it happened. I wonder if I could ever go back to wearing lace-trimmed skirts and puffy dresses without feeling uncomfortable and out of place. 36 :: Sasee.com :: April 2022
From princess dresses and barrettes to jeans and suit jackets. From girly-girl to tomboy. I don’t doubt for a while I might have been considered mannish or “butch.” But honestly, I’m no more ashamed of my “boyish” tastes now than I was of my girly ones back then. Clothes are just clothes, a means of expression. A visual cue to strangers, letting them have some idea of the person underneath. As I learn to embrace more of what it means to be me, I learn that my clothing doesn’t have to be limited to one side or the other. I can be a girly-girl and a tomboy. Though it sounds like a dichotomy, the truth of life is that humans are multifaceted beings, not paper dolls. I can embrace both my masculinity and my femininity as equally important parts of my identity. Yes, women can have masculine traits, it doesn’t make you mannish. Society wants to make you believe that you can’t embrace both sides of Yin and Yang. That you can only accept part of who you are, and all other portions of self must be thrown by the way-side, ignored. There’s a reason the Yin and Yang symbol is designed the way it is, mixing masculinity and femininity together, pieces of one in the other. Both traits are part of everyone. It’s worth the effort it takes to shirk society’s standards

It’s worthwhile for me to learn to enjoy all that it means to be “girly.” To remember that femininity is not weakness. And masculinity is not a rejection of my womanhood. All are important parts of what it means to be me. Yes, I can wear a suit, in fact, I already own one, waiting to be tailored. Yes, I can wear that obnoxiously colored maxi dress that looks like it came straight out of the 70s (and probably did).

There’s no shame in being girly. There’s no shame in being tomboyish. There’s no shame in being myself. I’m not subject to simple black and white definitions of gender, like pink and blue. I’m living Lavender, that’s just how I am.
