Culture Abounds

Burroughs and Chapin Art Museum The Rice Museum Hobcaw Barony The Kaminski House

Even if you’ve spent your vacations along the Grand Strand for years, a trip to a local museum or a night supporting local art gives a fresh perspective and provides an opportunity to connect with the Grand Strand in a whole new way.

While we agree that the beaches are outstanding, our marshes, rivers, and estuaries are some of the most unique on the East Coast, and a trip to Hobcaw Barony will give you a new respect for our amazing tidal waters. The foundation’s primary mission is to conserve the land’s unique natural and cultural resources for research and education. Discover all 16,000 acres of history and ecology by reserving your spot on one (or more) of their many illuminating tours.

Step back in time at Hopsewee Plantation on the North Santee River and experience life on a typical low-country rice plantation in the 18th century. The Rice Museum on Front Street in Georgetown is located in the historic clock tower and explores the area’s fascinating rice culture. The Georgetown County Museum highlights nearly 300 years of local culture. The Kaminski House, built in the late 1700s, features a large collection of fine antiques and still has many original floors and moldings. In fall and winter, The Franklin G. Burroughs and Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum , an off-the-beaten-

path treasure of Myrtle Beach, hosts special exhibits, events, and fascinating permanent collections.

In Conway, learn about Horry County history at The Horry County Museum. While visiting this historic riverfront city, take a walking tour and learn more about our county seat. Be sure to explore the local art scene in Conway. The downtown area has wonderful galleries and events throughout the year. An afternoon or evening enjoying a cultural arts performance is a pleasure to be savored. Coastal Carolina University in Conway has a full calendar of events from September through May.

Maybe theater arts are your favorite? Many non-profit, community theaters along the Grand Strand produce quality plays and musicals. The Strand Theatre in Georgetown and Theatre of the Republic in Conway create dynamic shows and use their “dark” nights to show classic and independent films. Located in Myrtle Beach, Long Bay Theatre not only entertains but also educates through workshops. Located in the Market Common, the Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre combines the performing arts with youth development. The Grand Strand is fortunate to have several local theaters still alive and ready to entertain throughout the year.

Enjoy the Grand Strand’s cultural arts!

Let's Hear it Live!

The Grand Strand offers so many opportunities to listen and groove to live music – as the sun goes down, it’s time to let our talented musicians entertain you!

The Hangout features unique entertainment experiences including dancing, contests led by energetic cast members, and an assortment of creative and interactive art installations. On top of delicious food and drinks, this gathering place in Broadway at the Beach offers live music year-round on their dual indoor and outdoor stages.

Located in Barefoot Landing, take the family to Lulu’s to enjoy the view of the Intracoastal Waterway, live entertainment, and good food.

In North Myrtle Beach, get ready to rock out at a House of Blues

concert – or enjoy a foot-stomping, handclapping brunch with a weekly Gospel Brunch.

Known as “The Beat of the Beach,” 3001 Nightlife is a dynamic entertainment venue that has three clubs in one – Club Rewind (Top 40, classic beach, rock, & funk music), Bourbon Cowboy (country, karaoke, southern & classic rock) and Envy Nightlife (retro, house, high-energy music).

Visit www.myrtlelive.com for a detailed list that is updated every day, so you know who the best is to see and hear play.

The Carolina Opry

On June 2, 1986, The Carolina Opry opened its doors for the first time. Not only was this new entertainment the first show to open in Myrtle Beach, but it was the only show in the area for seven years after its grand debut. The impressive variety of live music shows is traced back to one man, Calvin Gilmore, and his vision that first-rate entertainment could thrive along the Grand Strand.

The Carolina Opry quickly outgrew its original location, so in 1991, Gilmore broke ground on the 2,200-seat stateof-the-art theater that The Carolina Opry now calls home. The Carolina Opry remained the standard that others tried to live up to and was one of the few theaters to remain not only standing but successful through this period.

Going on its 37th year of award-

winning live entertainment, The Carolina Opry brings shows to the Grand Strand throughout every season. The classic Carolina Opry show blends two hours of high-energy music, comedy, and dance. Time Warp showcases the best music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s blended with rich multimedia screens, special effects, and elaborate costuming. The Christmas Show of the South brings stunning changes every year, but the show always blends beautifully with time-honored traditions to create an unforgettable holiday experience with friends and family.

As the only show on the Grand Strand to have a local owner who performs, produces, and directs his own show, Gilmore’s dedication, creativity, and courage brought theater to the Grand Strand and can be credited for the industry’s success today.

Well-prepared and delicious, a good meal is one of life’s finest pleasures, and an important part of any vacation is enjoying your favorite foods. Locally, trained chefs prepare a dynamic variety of cuisines for your dining pleasure.

Seafood, of course, is served in every way imaginable, from the traditional Murrells Inlet or Calabash seafood platter to fresh and tasty sushi or a perfectly grilled piece of freshly caught fish drizzled with a rich, complex sauce. Our local blue crabs are a delicacy steamed, prepared as crab cakes, or in she-crab soup.

Oysters are another local favorite and depending on the time of year, can be eaten steamed, fried, or on the half shell. A regional favorite, shrimp and grits, comes to your table piping hot, creamy, and unforgettable! One of our favorite restaurants to enjoy all of the above is Carolina Seafood & Steak, located in Myrtle Beach.

Barbeque is another popular South Carolina dish, but even within the state, there is an ongoing and sometimes heated debate over which type of sauce is the best. Our coastal area prefers a spicy, vinegar-

based sauce, and can be found at many local barbeque restaurants, paired with sweet potatoes, coleslaw, and always, banana pudding.

From Georgetown all the way up the South Carolina coast, the Grand Strand has a plethora of fine dining prepared by the best of the best local chefs. We have a huge appreciation

for our International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach, the exquisite chefs they create, and all the work they do for our community. No matter what delicious cuisine you decide on, be sure to take note of the chef’s specials - these are only available for a short time and are always a divine choice!

Dining with a View

The Grand Strand has plenty of options for dining with a view! On the north end, catch the sunset over the Intracoastal Waterway or relax and watch the waves crash on the shore of the mighty Atlantic at one of Myrtle Beach’s oceanfront eateries. On the south end, enjoy delicious food and drink while gazing at the inlet or ocean. Ahhh, life just doesn’t get much better!
