Cover Artist Flowers for the Soul, by Martha dePoo Martha dePoo’s love of art began at an early age through the nurturing guidance of her artist mother, Suzie dePoo (Zuzek). Upon graduating from Key West High School in 1973, dePoo went to work in the art department of Key West Hand Print Fabrics where she rose to department head. For twelve years she received invaluable training in color and design as well as the opportunity to create numerous tropical motifs for Lilly Pulitzer. In 1984, dePoo became a self-employed artist and since that time has participated in many juried shows and has won numerous awards, including First Place in the Florida Keys Watercolor Society’s Annual Juried Shows in 2000, 2005 and 2006. In 2006 the Key West Art & Historical Society hosted an unprecedented, 10 week one-woman exhibition of dePoo’s paintings at the Customs House Museum from January until April.
Hair is important to women – a change in cut or color is nearly always preceded by much thought and conversation with our closest friends. I’ve participated in many of these conversations and have seen my friends get spectacular results. And while I do want my hair to look nice, I’ve never felt quite as stylish as some of my gorgeous friends. The color of my hair is the one thing I’ve always liked though, and except for a brief period in middle school when I didn’t like much of anything about myself, my bright, strawberry blond color is one thing I never wanted to change. Redheads gray a little differently than most; as I’ve gotten older, my hair has faded from bright to muted, with gray streaks getting larger every year. One of my oldest and dearest friends, Daphne King, is a super talented hair stylist and colorist, as well as a beautiful person inside and out. Her skill has kept my crazy hair looking presentable for most of my adult life. In this issue, I interviewed Daphne about how we deal with our graying hair, and, while I was in her salon, Daphne colored my hair! When she was finished, my hair looked much like it did before I had a single strand of gray. It is so pretty, and I finally understand why so many of my friends color their hair. I don’t know if I’ll do this forever, but for now, I love it! Another thing we all love is makeup, and I had so much fun interviewing Casey Jones, Estee Lauder Account Coordinator. Casey specializes in makeup for women over 50 and loves helping women look their best. She has agreed to do two master classes this month, on June 15th, at the Belk at Coastal Grand Mall. The classes are free; all you need is your own makeup brushes and she provides all the makeup. See the interview and ad in this issue for information on how to sign up. I hope to see you there!

dePoo considers herself a life-long student of art and the focus of her work has been the fast disappearing flavor of old Key West and the neighboring keys. But recently dePoo has discovered another southern region of the country with a distinctive culture and charm; the Carolina Lowcountry. Her richly hued watercolors exude a warmth and vibrancy that reflects the joy and pace of life in the South. Many of her works relate the harmony and interaction between people, and the animals in their lives. Her work can be seen or purchased at Cheryl Newby Gallery, 11096 Ocean Highway, Suite 4 Pawleys Island, or on the website at www.cherylnewbygallery.com. Contact the gallery at 843-979-0149.

Happy Feet
by Diane Devaugn Stokes Ahhhhh, happy feet! No I’m not talking about that movie with the dancing penguins! Summer is here, and I am finally back to wearing flip-flops and sandals where my feet can feel free and easy, making me feel free and easy all over too. They have told me many times how much they hate winter and being closed up in those tight zipped up leather boots! They hate the fur-lined slippers that make my feet sweat and smell. They hate the black tights I wear to keep warm as they say they can’t breathe when I wear them. They hate panty hose of any type. They hate the silly striped socks I smother them in and they especially abhor the red and green Christmas ones with bells on them. Those drive my feet nuts! Oh yea, my feet talk to me. Don’t yours? But now, with the warm weather, my toes can spread out and see the world from a whole new perspect ive. They are not cooped up anymore like a caged animal. They can smile and show off as they are seen up close and personal by so many more people, bunions and all. They not only feel prettier, they are prettier due to bi-monthly pedicures, foot massages with lots of silky cream – getting far more attention now than winter necessitates.
Now for dressier nights, my flip-flops have to take a back seat to sandals. You know the ones with a little strap across the heel or a cute slide with a mini heel. But as long as the shoe is open for summer, these feet of mine will keep their sense of humor. Close them in, and they become irate just like spoiled brat kids! There is one more issue I have to consider this summer that I never had to deal with before, and it’s Plantar Fasciitis! This is a condition I acquired in October while appearing in the musical Mamma Mia. While dancing in those high top silver Mylar boots with the three-inch platforms, I tore a tendon in my ankle that has produced serious heel pain that can be excruciating at times. Throughout the winter, I had to wear orthotics in all of my shoes for comfort and to help my foot to heal. As you k n o w, t h e re is nothing fashionable a b o u t orthotics, and they can’t be worn with flip flops or sandals, so only time will tell how really contented my feet will be this summer. Oh my, say it’s not so, another aging issue. Yuk! Hopefully, happy feet are not a thing of the past!
However, my feet have told me that I can’t wear those really thin-soled flip-flops like I did when I was young. They need more support now than they used to need! Can’t buy the dollar store ones – forget about it! Now I have to get name brand flip-flops with at least an inch of padding to absorb the shock of a heavier body plunging down on them with every single step. I never thought I’d ever have to spend at least thirty dollars to get a decent pair that wouldn’t cause my feet to ache and scream at me all night long. But it’s the only way to shut my feet up!

Come Shop With Us! Celebrate the Season with a Pop of Color by Laurie Johnston
Many of us are afraid of color – typically we stick with neutral because it’s safe. But, the summer season has arrived and color is fun! Pink, yellow green, orange, lavender – a pop of color can make a big difference and also make us happy. Make a statement with a large colorful necklace and bracelet, or even shoes because our feet do get noticed. You could even try a splashy pocketbook, hat, scarf or belt. Be it a subtle hint or bold statement, brighten your ensemble and brighten your day. It’s easy to enhance your favorite black dress with a yellow scarf or a beautiful turquoise necklace. People come in and say they always use black or grey and, actually, it is easier to accessorize. But take a chance on color! You may be surprised at how great you look in a bright shade. I can help you get started with color. First, I’ll look at your hair and skin color – yellow isn’t for everyone, for example. Color is specific to the individual, and you want to try something that’s going to brighten you. You can start small with a statement necklace and work up to more color.

A colorful accessory can make your entire outfit pop. Everyone will ask where you got it! Color will make you feel good. The sun is shining – we should be shining. Today, I thought about wearing jeans, but I decided on white pants – it’s the time of year to lighten and brighten. White pants are a mainstay for the summer or a white skirt or shirt. They go with anything. Today I put on white Capri’s, a blue blouse, and blue slides with silver and pearls on them. A customer offered to buy the shirt right off my back today – and she may not have tried that shirt on if she saw it hanging on the rack! Last year I had a woman come in – I had on a cute, fringed vest that she loved. At 5 o’clock, she came back. I didn’t have her size in stock, but she said yes you do, you’re wearing it! So, I took it off and sold it to her. All of us wear what we sell so you can see how a bright color will look. Some things on a hanger look completely different when you put them on. Laurie Johnston owns Aunique Boutique located at 980 Cipriana Drive in Myrtle Beach. She and her staff love helping customers accessorize and feel fabulous. Stop by for a visit – you will feel like you are visiting with old friends! Aunique Boutique is open 11am-6pm, Monday – Saturday.

Makeup Made Simple by Casey Sifford Jones
Makeup should be simple, and while trends come and go, I prefer a more classic look that all women can achieve. Of course, always start with good skin care for the best results. All women can try the new trends, but women over 50 may choose to do a different level to achieve the best result. For example, a skin finish determines how your foundation appears. Skin finishes can range from a matte to a satin to a glow. My favorite for women over 50 is to use a glow finish. You will radiate with a healthy glow from within. Estee Lauder’s water based foundation, Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup, SPF 30, achieves this effect and makes your skin look beautiful. Whatever you use, always choose one that includes sunscreen.
Don’t forget your eyebrows – they are so important to frame your face. Many women feel overwhelmed by brow work as well. We teach a simple technique to fill them in, and once someone shows you how to do this, you will be amazed by how easily it’s done. I love to teach women, it’s my passion. I do master classes, and most of my students are over 50. You do the actual application while I teach so you don’t forget what you’ve learned. You will leave more comfortable and confident. I am doing two at Belk in Coastal Grand Mall on June 15th, check this issue for details – this is a fun activity with a group of girlfriends! No woman has to be married to a specific brand. Actually, the typical woman has 16 different brands in her cosmetic drawer with products ranging from hair to skin care. That is the best way to explore and find out what’s best for you. Even working for Estee Lauder, I don’t claim that we have the best for every woman. There are cult favorites in other brands that I love. When you come, we want you to be your own curator and find what’s best for you.
Life style choices are important to finding the perfect foundation. Double Wear is a 24 hour foundation. You can go to the gym, play tennis, do whatever you like, and it’s going to stay on. All makeup brands make long lasting foundation. If you are more concerned with anti aging, again, all brands have an anti aging foundation. You want to customize your foundation based on your lifestyle. I always ask my clients if they could make their own foundation at home, think about what they want it to do for their skin. Most women over 50 have been doing the same type of makeup application for 20 plus years. But, the application trends are always changing – there are brushes and application tips galore. Try a beauty blender for a great look. My favorite way to get a good finish is stippling with a powder brush – it gives you an airbrushed finish that I love. It all starts with the application. Be open to applying your makeup differently. Another thing women over 50 are afraid to try is contouring. It was a big trend this past year and can really create a defined and contoured look that will take years off if done correctly. And, it can be done simply. It really makes your jaw line and cheekbones look more sculpted. To learn what works best for you, get a personalized experience with a makeup artist. Estee Lauder or any of the major brands have options. Sometimes walking into an Ulta or Sephora can be so overwhelming. Beauty consultants and makeup artists are trained to customize each woman’s makeup to her personally. The “rules” you hear are not applicable to every woman. For example, many women think they can’t

wear powder, but we have a powder that’s water based that will smooth the texture of your skin.
While I’ve always loved makeup, I was in the medical field originally. I had a woman comment on my makeup, and she recruited me into the makeup industry. I was with Bare Minerals for two years and that ignited my passion to make women look and feel beautiful. In 2012, I joined the Estee Lauder team. I am an Estee Lauder account coordinator. My job is to hire and interview beauty advisers, and go into stores and train – elevating the performance experience. I wear a lot of different hats. I have 19 different stores with over 50 people. I just got Myrtle Beach back and am very excited. I’ll have Inlet Square Mall, Myrtle Beach Mall and Coastal Grand Mall. Contact Casey at Casey_Jones@belk.com or call 803-968-6065. Her Insta handle is jonesingfor_e.l_! You’ll love the photos! Don’t miss Casey’s Master Class on June 15th! There will be two classes available, at 11 am and 2 pm, both in Belk in Coastal Grand Mall. You must RSVP by calling 843-448-1516 x 266. Ask for Stacy, Susan, Janet or Laura. All makeup is provided, but you must bring your own brushes.

Horror at the Beauty Salon by Erika Hoffman
Snip, snip, snip. Scissors clicked away. My eyes were closed, as instructed. My ears alerted me to this cosmetic alteration. I felt her hand and the blade brushing my cheek. Why did I decide on a make-over only hours before my son’s uptown, out-of-state wedding: a make-over done by a stranger in a salon where I was a first-time customer, essentially a stranger to her? This cosmetologist moved to the other side of my body. Snip, snip, snip. With eyes closed, my mind raced. Dare I ask what she’s doing? Did I want to know? Still I sat, sightless. I feared a twitch of the muscles beneath my eye might jar her hands causing me to lose the favorite of my five senses. Finally, with stomach churning, I meekly queried: “Ah, are you trimming my eyelashes?”
“A male writer,” she cued. “John Grisham? I saw him in person. He spoke at my daughter’s UNC graduation.” “Not him. But someone just as famous.” “Hmm. I’m stumped. Whose make-over did you do?” At this point, I was really hoping someone like Tatum Channing had penned a book I didn’t know about. “Stephen King!” she said matter-of-factly. “Stephen King!” I shrieked. “Uh huh.”
“Just the fake’s ones,” she replied.
“The fellow with a mug that looks like he writes horror stories?”
“Huh? What? I have fake ones?” “I glued some on. I’m cutting them to match the length of yours.”
She didn’t reply. Moments passed in silence as I tried to tamp down my rising panic. She instructed me not to peek while she continued applying eyeliner, eye shadow and then base, powder, blush. I’d already resigned myself to the realization that I’d just wasted 75 bucks and an hour of time on a busy day, but I took solace in the fact that I had a washcloth and some cosmetics in the hotel room. I could scrub my face, pluck off the phony lashes, rearrange and flatten my hair and still get to the church on time, maybe. Who’s going to notice the groom’s mom anyway?
“Oh my!” I winced. “You’ll like them; it’ll open up your eyes. Haven’t you ever worn fake eyelashes before?” “Never.” “Keep your eyes shut. You don’t want glue to get in.” I relaxed a bit, now knowing that my homegrown eyelashes had not been pruned off. I pondered how I’d look for my son’s nuptials after the spidery lash addition, different makeup, and curlerrolled coif. With eyes shuttered, I asked my artiste about her life and profession.
Expecting to see the distorted face of the horror icon doll Chucky, I hesitated when my beautician finally said, “Mother-of-the-groom, you may open your eyes now.” My eyes! They got big as Chucky’s as I stared at my new face. “Unbelievable!” I declared.
“Have you ever made-up anyone famous?” I inquired. “Oh, yeah,” she said. “Celebrities? Movie stars? Politicians?”
The receptionist stopped ringing up a client and peered over. “You look like a different woman from the one who walked in here.’
“The most famous person whose make-up I’ve done was… a writer.”
“What a transformation!” uttered another beautician.
“Really?”
I smiled broadly. “It looks like I’ve had a face lift! What a miracle worker you are!”
“For the book jacket’s back cover,” she explained. At this point my rolodex of a mind was flipping through all the glamorous female writers’ back cover photos I could recall. I felt hopeful, suddenly. Maybe I’d morph into a beauty who happens to pen bestsellers. “Let me guess: Jackie Collins?”
“It’s surprising what make-up can do,” my beautician replied. “I look…stunning!” I exclaimed. I complimented her several times and handed her a big tip. On the way out, I whispered to my magician, “And, I don’t resemble Stephen King the least little bit!”
She laughed. “No.” “Ah...” I paused racking my mind to come up with other sexy-looking scribes. There aren’t that many.

Out of Fashion, and In Again by Jeffery Cohen
Like Mark Twain said, “Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence in society.” I guess my earliest encounter with fashion and style was at the age of seven. My folks felt that it was time for me to own my first suit so we rode over to “The American Shops,” a local clothing store. Its Deco architecture welcomed us in to a lush interior. Amid rack after rack of trendy clothes, tropical plants were arranged, wicker baskets of fruit laid out, and a parrot on a perch, if I remember correctly, squawked out things like, “How about a nice gray flannel?” That day I marched back and forth to the fitting room, trying on everything my mother handed me until we finally came to a charcoal gray wool suit. Everything in the store paled in comparison as far as my parents were concerned. “So handsome,” my mother beamed. “You look like a little banker.”
By the time I reached high school, fashion split in two directions. There was the greaser look – high-roll-collar white shirts, black slacks, black shoes and black leather jackets or the collegiate look – an Ivy League style that included things like Levis, penny loafers, navy blue blazers with a crest on the pocket and authentic Madras shirts, guaranteed to bleed. Since I was planning on going to college, I decided I’d get a head start and dress for the part. I spent two days searching every store in town before I turned up a real Madras shirt. The label read, “Made in India, guaranteed to bleed.” After wearing the shirt one time, my mother washed it. When the color ran, she thought it was ruined and threw it in the garbage. I did save all of my collegiate clothes for college. My freshmen year, I arrived at school proudly wearing my blazer and two suitcases filled with turtlenecks, corduroys and desert boots at my side, only to find everyone wearing jeans, sneakers and sweatshirts.
“Very distinguished.” My father nodded. “It itches!” I cried. “You’ll get used to it,” they said in one voice. I never did. In fact, the only comfortable way I could ever wear that suit was with my pajamas on underneath. Somehow powder blue flannel with bunny rabbit print sticking out of the pant legs never did that suit justice. At eleven years old, my mother took me to Brown’s department store for a new back-to-school wardrobe. It didn’t take more than a couple of minutes for old man Brown to convince us that the hottest new fashion was Dr. Kildaire tunics with three quarter length sleeves that buckled at the cuff. The shirts came in Popsicle orange, grape purple, and lime green with matching socks. We believed him, and so we bought. I wore those shirts for six months waiting for that trend to take off. In the end, the only one wearing those candy-colored shirts besides me was probably a handful of clowns from Barnum and Bailey Circus who’d also been conned by old man Brown.

print.
Over the years I’ve seen fashion change more times than I can count. Wide ties, thin ties, flowered shirts, platform shoes, bell bottoms, mini this, maxi that. And every time I just about catch up to the latest trend, it changes. But I have learned one thing about the world of fashion. What goes around comes around. All of those things that you think are out of style wind up coming back in fashion. As it turns out, I have a closet filled with clothes that are retro. The only thing I still need is a nice charcoal gray wool suit. If I can just find a pair of blue flannel pajamas with bunny rabbit

Nicole Says…Read These Books Through the summer, Sasee will review one tried and true favorite author plus one new favorite to try!
Beach House Reunion (#5 in the Beach House Series) by Mary Alice Monroe
Cara Rutledge returns to her beach house in the Isle of Palms. Haunted by heartache and memories, she is determined to forge a positive path for the future. Linnea is plagued by family traditions and expectations, when she decides to escape it all and join her aunt for the summer. Together these women reconnect with the other Turtle Ladies and discover the healing vibes of ocean life. Will they be able to let go of the past and find true happiness? Or does the past automatically dictate the future? Mary Alice Monroe returns with another fantastic addition to Cara Rutledge’s story. Excellently blending the healing vibes of nature and the vital need to carve your own path, this story is a beautiful reminder for
everyone to pause and smell the salt air. Although readers will appreciate this novel on its own, it will be even more enjoyable for those who have “grown-up” with Cara over the years. Readers are definitely going to want to pack this book in their beach bag with the sunscreen. I have always loved the incredible way that Mary Alice Monroe brings the Lowcountry setting to life. The way she writes about nature, it almost becomes a character throughout the storyline, influencing decisions and outcomes. Her books are a great reminder that nature can heal our souls, but we also need to work together to help protect wildlife and their habitats. If you are a fan of Mary Alice Monroe’s work, you will want to join our August Facebook Book Club. We will be discussing Beach House Reunion with Mary Alice Monroe on August 27th. We will also be learning what books are on her reading list for this summer.
The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife by Maryann McFadden
Rachel is a newly-wed and finds herself now living at a famous, historic cemetery. Within her first few days at her new home, she discovers a monument for a young woman named Tillie. When she tries to learn more about her, the town turns her away. The past is the past, and it shouldn’t be messed with. However, Rachel is determined to learn more. Will the truth set her free or will it cost her everything? Part mystery, part true story, this book blends together historical events with a modern twist. The two storylines mirror each other as each woman unveils a new chapter in their lives. All it took was a walk for Rachel to be intrigued, to wonder, to investigate. The transition between Rachel’s story and Tillie’s story is effortless. Readers will be anxiously turning the page to continue learning about both women’s lives. The subject matter of rape and murder can be difficult to read for some, but McFadden makes a point that the most difficult subject matters are the ones that need to be discussed out loud.
I had heard of Maryann McFadden’s The Richest Season, but this is the first book that I have read by her. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style and look forward to reading her other work in the future. My goal this month was to share with Sasee readers a book that had been recommended by Mary Alice Monroe. In doing the research, I saw numerous names that I had expected: Pat Conroy, Rosamunde Pilcher, Mary Kay Andrews, Carla Damron, etc. Several are incredible beach reads that are perfect for a summer’s day. When I picked up the copy of McFadden’s book, I noticed a recommendation quote by Monroe, which intrigued me, considering this book is historical fiction. This story did not disappoint!

Mazza trunk show June 21 & June 22 10:00-5:00 A World of Colorful Jewelry by LeAnne Daniels For summer style, jewelry with colored stones is a fun and casual way to add a little color to your summer wardrobe. A beautiful colored stone necklace will stand out against your crisp summer white outfit and always looks great with a tan. Jewelry designers have always used colored stones in their designs, but for summer, the pieces are less formal with brighter colors that look fresh and different. There are so many wonderful designs to choose from right now - some are set in stunning 18K gold and some are made into more affordable fashion jewelry. Beautiful colored gemstones come in every color of the rainbow. Jewelry by Italian designer, Marco Bicego, has always been a favorite summer staple because of his feminine designs and unique use of colored stones. He uses lots of faceted multicolored stones like tourmalines, blue topaz, peridot and citrine mixed in with brushed 18K gold. His new designs this summer feature deep blue London blue topaz mixed with sky blue topaz. He also uses lots of pure blue turquoise or lapis mixed with brushed gold for spring and summer. Clara Williams is another great designer whose main focus is lots of color - necklaces made from every colored stone you can imagine peridot, lapis, morganite, turquoise, kyanite, adventurine and of course, pearls. All of her necklaces and pendants are magnetic and you can change out the pendants with the different necklaces. Her pendants are also primarily colored stones; some of which are smooth or carved pieces and some that are rough cut stones. This makes for a sophisticated and versatile way to wear colored stones which can be worn every day or dressed up for a night out.

I tend to wear a lot of neutrals, but I still want to add a pop of color in the summer so that is where a beautiful piece of jewelry made with colored stones can really stand out. A necklace with beautiful colors is a great way to change up an outfit or bring out the color in your eyes. If you tend to wear more bright colors, then sometimes some colorful earrings may be all the jewelry you need. Even our customers who wear Lilly Pulitzer all summer long still enjoy having a bit of color in their jewelry - there are lots of beautiful pink and green stones to choose from! The great thing about jewelry made with colored stones is that it is not only unique and fun but that it comes in all price ranges. We have a new line in our store that is made by a young designer that is only 24 years old. Her gold and colored stone designs are beautiful, fun and youthful and also very affordable. Whether you want a one of a kind designer piece or just something fun for the summer, there is lots of beautiful jewelry with colored stones to choose from. Stop by Eleanor Pitts Gifts, Jewelry, China at 11096 Ocean Hwy in Pawleys Island to see her amazing selection of colorful jewelry, find her on Facebook, @eleanorpittsjewelry, or call 843-237-8080. The Queen of Yes by Diane Stark
Last Friday, I had a million errands to run and a little boy who would’ve much rather stayed home and played. “I’m sorry, Bud, but you have to go with me,” I said. “Daddy’s not home from work yet, and I can’t leave you home by yourself.” Nathan sighed. “But I just got a new Lego set, and I wanted to build it today.”
he asked for. And minus the groceries, I’d spent less than five bucks for the snow cone and two Star Wars notebooks. “I wish I could always make you this happy for five bucks,” I said. “And I really wish I could make your big brothers and sisters happy that cheaply.” The following day, I would be taking my daughter, Julia, and her best friend to a nearby city for a girls’ day to celebrate her upcoming birthday. She was turning 16, and I really wanted the day to be special. In that moment, I decided to be the Queen of Yes again tomorrow.
I shrugged. “Sorry, Buddy. You’ve got to go with me.” We headed to the drug store so I could pick up a prescription. When we got back to the car, I noticed something. “Nathan, the snow cone place is open. Do you want to go?”
The three of us woke up early and drove an hour to the nearest big city. Their mall had several of Julia’s favorite stores, which the mall in our small town did not include. The bigger mall also included a Cheesecake Factory, our predetermined lunch destination.
I don’t think I need to tell you his answer. After our treat, we stopped at the dollar store. Nathan’s big sister’s birthday was in a few days, and I wanted to pick up some decorations.
I followed Julia and her friend into dozens of clothing stores. I was impressed with both girls’ interest in getting good deals. In each store, they would meander around the front of the store, checking price tags, but almost always, they would do their actual shopping off the clearance racks in the back of the store.
“Mom, can I get this notebook? It has Darth Vader on it, and I need a new notebook to draw in.” Something that costs only a dollar that would encourage my son to be creative, instead of burying his nose in a screen? Yes, please. “If there’s a Luke Skywalker one, get it too,” I said.
The clearance racks were fine for Julia’s clothes, but I had something special in mind for her accessories. I’d spotted a Pandora store, and I knew that for months, Julia had wanted one of their rings. When we walked by the store, I said, “Let’s go in so you can show me which ring you like. Then I’ll know what to buy you for Christmas this year.”
After that, we went to the grocery store, where Nathan’s favorite kind of cereal was on sale. “Grab a couple boxes,” I told him. We also got string cheese, strawberry banana yogurt, and chocolate milk – more of Nathan’s favorite foods. On the way home, Nathan said, “Mom, I’m sorry I whined about going shopping with you. It was really fun. You were like The Queen of Yes today.” I laughed. “The Queen of Yes? What does that mean?”
Julia smiled and started looking at the rings. For 15 minutes, she and her friend oohed and aahed over the sparkly jewelry. Finally, Julia pointed to one ring. “This one’s my favorite,” she said. “Do you want to take a picture of it with your phone so you’ll remember at Christmas?”
“You said yes to everything I asked for today. You made the errands fun.”
I smiled. “That won’t be necessary.” Julia’s mouth dropped open as I motioned for the sales clerk to come over.
I thought back on our day and realized that I had said yes to everything
“Mom, I can’t believe you,” Julia said, nearly jumping up and down in the

store. “You’re the best mom in the world.” “My mom bought me a ring for my 16th birthday, and I still have it,” I said. “You won’t remember which shirt you got on our trip today, but you’ll remember the ring forever.” Julia hugged me. We both had tears in our eyes. When the sales clerk came over, I said, “It’s her 16th birthday, and she needs something special to commemorate the occasion.” Julia tried on her favorite ring, as well as several others. She finally settled on the one she’d originally chosen. “It’s so pretty, Mom,” she said. “It’s like the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen.” And when Julia refused the jewelry box, insisting on wearing it out of the store, I knew I’d really accomplished something special.
Custom Beach Umbrellas & Chairs Manufactured in Myrtle Beach, Shipped world-wide Wide variety of colors & color combinations in stock
At lunch, I smiled as I watched my daughter staring at her new ring as it sparkled when the light caught it. “I love it, Mom,” she said repeatedly. At home that night, she showed her new bling to my husband and her brothers. “Mom wanted me to have something really special for my birthday,” she said. “I love my ring, but the whole day was amazing.” She turned to me. “I can’t thank you enough, Mom.” “She was the Queen of Yes, wasn’t she?” Nathan said. Julia smiled at her little brother. “Yes, Nathan, Mom was definitely the Queen of Yes.” While I can’t be the Queen of Yes for my kids every day, it sure is fun when I can be. It’s something I hope they’ll remember, and maybe even do for their kids someday. Or better yet, let me be the Queen of Yes for my grandbabies too. Although it’s a long way off, just the thought makes me smile. In the meantime, I’ll start saving my pennies. Being the Queen of Yes to a teenage girl is definitely more expensive than doing it for a nine-yearold boy. But I have to be honest; it was also a lot more fun.

We Found It! by Rose Ann Sinay
We did it! After only a week of searching for a house in Connecticut halfway between my daughter and her family and my son and his, we found the place we could call home, where we could make wonderful memories with our granddaughters. The 1940s Adirondack style house, on three acres of land, boasted a big pond and plenty of wildlife to go with it. As I listened to the realtor list the assets of the property, I looked out the window imagining a paddleboat and fishing poles lined up at the water’s edge in the summer; and ice skates, sleds and snowmen during the winter. I would have to stock up on hats, gloves and big black buttons. Of course, we’d have to make changes. I already had a to-do list: take out the wall between the kitchen and living room, buy new doors, paint cabinets, paint the walls – make it ours. A mere forty minutes from family in one direction, and an hour ten minutes in the other direction. Could it be any more perfect?
He saw the look on my face. “We have grandchildren here,” he said continuing his conversation with the clerk. Another look. “Really adorable grandchildren. My granddaughters and I will be fishing together this summer.” He pulled out his wallet with pictures of the girls. Redeemed. “I understand,” everyone says. But they really don’t. Our granddaughters had been difficult to come by, and we couldn’t miss any more of their lives. My daughter and daughter-in-law (and their husbands) are my heroes for all they’ve been through. In the bookstore, my husband perused the sports section. I saw him set his stance in the center of the aisle, concentrate on an imaginary point and take a swing.
Yes! We checked out the area–the restaurants (wonderful), grocer y stores (pricey), bookstores (love!), lakes, horse farms, flea markets – quaint and charmingly New England. We were smitten. “Where are you coming from?” the sales clerk asked when we revealed we were hoping to move to the area. “North Carolina,” we replied. “And you’re moving up here?” She pointed to the snow outside. “Are you crazy?” “I’ve wondered that myself,” my husband said. He was dressed in a wool hat, coat and thick gloves instead of his usual winter uniform of a lined golf jacket, cap and a single white golf glove. “I could be on the golf course right now,” he said looking at the plowed mounds of snow we had
28
maneuvered around to get to the stores.
“Fore,” I said laughing. But, inside I winced. Changing your life late-stream is not for the weak hearted. Now, he will be swinging a shovel in the winter instead of a golf club, but it wasn’t about golf. It was about building a new life, with no soccer parents to become life-long friends, no built-in community of people with the same interests and abundance of time. I vacillated between sheer joy that we would be within driving distance of our kids, and sadness at what we were leaving behind. We had made an important decision, and we would stay the course. We delivered our offer that afternoon. After the holidays, we returned to our interim home excited to plan our next trip. I spent a lot of time on the computer gathering decorating ideas. Did we want to conform to New England traditional or shake things up with southwestern turquoise and cowhide; blue and yellow or gray and white?

Back at the house, things were moving along – inspections completed, the water and septic evaluations were scheduled to be done – we were on our way. The doubts were dissolving.
The Collection
Then came the call from the water testing company. “I hate to tell you this,” the representative began, “but this house is frozen.” The pipes, the water in the toilet – it was an iceberg. Though the house was empty, the heat had been set at 65 degrees. Unfortunately, the oil had run out during the longest cold stretch of the year. The damage could be repaired, but was it the same? What does one do in a case like this? Doubts began to climb back in. Do we look further, or hang in there? Recently, I had become a believer in signs. Fate had been hitting me over the head with quirky little clues for the past year. Things like passing a town’s name plaque just as an old song with the same name (Clarksville) played on the car radio, or finding a book with the signature of a friend in a pile of used books for sale in another state. On a previous trip to Connecticut, we had found an antique store with my granddaughter’s unusual middle name – Tillie. As it turned out a relative of the store had her first name, as well. And, the shop just happened to have my mother’s china pattern. The mugs I had been unsuccessfully searching for sat in the display case. The shop was on the way to this house. Ah, I’ve left the best sign for last; the one that saw us through the “crisis.” Before our trip to spend Christmas, I had written a story for Sasee chronicling our decision to relocate and be near our kids, the adventures/ misadventures of moving, and the fear of not being able to find the perfect abode that would be accessible to both of our children. I named that essay, “Where the Heart Resides.” I changed it several times, but the title stuck. When we walked into the living room of this home with its own pond and unspoken promises, a sign confirmed it was the one. There, in one corner of the fireplace mantle was an inlaid arrow pointing the way. In the other corner was the heart of the house, inlaid and polished to a sunny shine. It has resided here for all these years . . . waiting for us to share with our family. We just had to find it. HOME FURNISHINGS • ACCESSORIES • ANTIQUES INTERIOR DESIGN • CUSTOM WINDOW TREATMENTS

Brighten Your Home with Paint by Kimberlee Stewart
Whether you’re painting a new home or changing your existing colors, we have some great color options available. We are really excited about the new Magnolia Line from Joanna Gaines. The paint is manufactured by Kilz and the colors are developed by Joanna. The colors are fabulous and the paint quality is excellent. There are only 150 colors to choose from, but that actually makes it easier to decide. Currently, neutrals are by far the most popular for walls. They create a really great background and allow your furnishings to stand out. I also find that you don’t get tired of them too quickly. Yarn, Wedding Band and Sunday Stroll are very popular colors.

Griege (gray/beige) neutrals seem to be the most popular colors currently. Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore, Oak Terrace by Clark & Kensington, and Sculpting Clay by Valspar are also very popular as well. The darker colors are just not as popular, but you can still do power colors. A dining room is stunning in navy or red – or an espresso brown or gold. This is a popular room to add bold colors. Bedrooms are, to me, personal spaces and don’t have to follow the color outline of the public spaces in the home, particularly for children’s rooms. Don’t pay too much attention to color trends. Go with what you like, you will be much happier. If you have a darker space, brighten it up by choosing a nice white – not too brilliant or cold – and use that color in three different finishes so you get a great blend, but you build a little contrast. You can use a flat finish on the ceiling, eggshell on the walls and semi gloss on the trim. The sheen creates contrast and builds on the color. We are happy to help you decide what works best for you. Stop by the store and give us an idea of where you’re headed with colors. Bring fabric samples or whatever you’re using as accents. We also do on site consultations. There is a fee, but this can really help you make the right decision. Finally, always buy quality paint. Regardless of color, your finished product will be richer looking and last much longer. Kimberlee Stewart is the paint manager at Palmetto Ace Home Center in Pawleys Island. Dress for You – Not Your Age! By Alicia Hart
The idea of dressing for your age is so outdated! Sure, there is always a time and place for everything – and you should always look appropriate for the environment and occasion.
HOME GOODS AND GIFTS 843-833-8820 712 Front Street • Georgetown, SC
Women can wear almost anything at any age with a little common sense. The most stylish dressers don’t have to give up trendy looks. If you love the look of a distressed jean, wear it on the weekends and not to the office. You love leather, lace, velvet, wear it in a style that works best for you. Who says you can’t wear a pencil skirt or a sheer top? There are no rules that say, you can’t wear leggings in your 40s or sleeveless in your 50s or shorts in your 60s. If you love it and it makes you feel good, go for it! Confidence matters more than age! Dressing in tune with your own personal style will improve your overall confidence and make you feel better about your appearance. Throw age out of the equation and dress like yourself. You need confidence to be creative with your wardrobe. Express your personal style and have fun with fashion, regardless of your age. For 35 years, the motto at Pawleys Island Wear has been “Fashion for the Ages.” Sharing fashionable trends and styles is a passion of all staff members at Pawleys Island Wear. We have created a powerful, yet fun and stylish balance of generational fashion for today’s woman. If your closet is making you feel old, come work with one of our stylists at Pawleys Island Wear. We can help you bring that confidence and style back to your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid ladies! You are beautiful at any age! Express yourself, love your look and feel good wearing it! Visit Pawleys Island Wear at 10880 Ocean Hwy at the Hammock Shop Village. We are open Monday-Saturday, 10am-6pm and Sunday noon-5pm.

Pink Tulle Skirt by Kim Delmar Cory
I was a 63-year-old woman with a brand new unworn pink tulle skirt hanging in her closet. It is a size 1X.
But…I refused to wear it with friends or family. Basically anyone I knew. Or might ever see again.
I bought it for the same reason one can never have too many twinkle lights. Twinkle lights make me smile no matter how horrendous a day I’ve experienced. If my car died on the expressway at night in the snow, if my credit card was hacked and illegally charged with thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise, or, perhaps worst of all, if the last chocolate donut disappeared from the lunch room – twinkle lights will clear a path to a higher happier ground. Twinkle lights are a comfort zone for me. A pink tulle skirt is not. Yet my inner little girl had decreed I needed one. Not exactly bucket list fare, but if not now, when?
I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror wearing it, afraid I would hate it. Or at least hate myself in it. I couldn’t for the life of me figure what to wear as a top. Sweater? Blouse? Tucked in? Tails out? Should I just relegate it to the far left of my closet with its kindred clothing? Had I bought into societal premises?
As a tomboy who reveled in championing tetherball until puberty, I never took dance lessons. I always envied my daughter’s preteen dance costumes, the delicate floaty ballet skirt, and the full-on pink tulle tutu. So why did I order this skirt of mysterious purpose online? Because ordering online instead of buying in a store precluded me from trying it on and deciding it made me look like a flower prop in an elementary school play. Distorted reality can be a companionable concept when ordering clothes online. The sizeable clump of clothes hanging to the far left of my closet speaks to this truth. Despite an initial burst of elation when my frothy pink tulle skirt sprang open from its brown UPS package like a courting peacock’s plumage, I wondered out loud, “Where will I ever wear such a skirt?” Let me clarify that it is not a tutu, but a knee-length tulle skirt. I work in an office with mostly younger people. My limited social life boasts dining with my husband at our neighborhood pub where wearing a fleece sporting a logo is considered overdressed. Yes, there is the occasional birthday and anniversary celebration.

Plus-sized women are supposed to wear simple, undramatic and preferably dark clothes. Women-of-a-certain-age should dress “age-appropriate.” Below the knee skirts. Baggy-butted jeans. No décolletage (wrinkles, darling). My pretty pink tulle skirt accompanied me to a national out-of-state work conference. No clue why I packed it. Really, to a conference for work? Didn’t it speak more to “whimsy” than “let’s-get-down-to-business?” My skirt hung on the outside of my hotel room closet door mocking me. You brought me, Sissy Girl. Now what? She seemed to say. And there it was. In red bold type across the top of the week’s agenda; the conference sponsors were hosting a 6-8 pm “meet-and-greet” with hors d’oeuvres and live music. “Buckle up, Buttercup!” I said to my skirt. “We’re going out!” My gorgeous tulle skirt was complemented by a white V-neck (décolletage, oh my) T-shirt and a well-worn blue jean jacket. Pink sandals completed my ensemble. My stomach clenched as I garnered enough pluck to glance at my reflection in the full length mirror. And recognized me! The sassy ‘I-don’t-give-a-rat’s-ass-what-you-think-becauseI-feel-and-look-amazing’ me of decades ago, the me of this moment. People talked over and swayed to the live band music at the meet-and-greet. The generous buffet and well-stocked bar enticed. Café tables and chairs were scattered throughout the dimly lit, barn-sized ballroom. I talked, I ate, I drank. I threw my head back and laughed. I shimmered and sparkled in my pink tulle skirt just like the twinkle lights that permeated the room – draped along tables and band stand, hanging from the ceiling in snowflake-like display, sprinkled across the walls. But who needs twinkle lights when you have a pink tulle skirt? Rock on.

get rid of the line where your hair is growing out. There’s no really pretty way to do it without over bleaching your hair. It takes time.” Daphne also stressed that there is no “one” formula that works for everyone. “Hair color is very personal to each client. I never write down formulas, rather I assess my client’s hair each time they visit the salon and custom mix the color. Everyone’s hair changes – colors wash out and change.” One of Daphne’s clients, Cindy Andres, said she is very happy to be back to her natural silver gray. “It’s taken over a year and I still have some color. My hair was darker with highlights and as the time went on I discovered I’m more than 90% gray!” Daphne added a lot of blond highlights to Cindy’s hair to give a more cohesive look. “It was hard the first six months, but I decided I was going to go through it and I’m very pleased.”
Gray and Gorgeous: A Conversation with Daphne King
At the first sign of gray hair, many of us go straight to our stylist for color. And while this is a beautiful option, gray hair can be gorgeous! Veteran stylist and colorist, Daphne King, gave us some tips about returning to our natural shade. As we get older, the pigment cells in our hair follicles gradually die. When there are fewer pigment cells in a hair follicle, that strand of hair will no longer contain as much melanin and will become a more transparent color – like gray, silver or white – as it grows. As we continue to get older, fewer pigment cells will be around to produce melanin. Eventually, the hair will look completely gray. Returning to a natural gray can be a slow process, depending on the length of your hair, but one that yields beautiful results. “I use foil highlights to put a lighter color in the ‘colored’ hair,” Daphne explained. She went on to say it all depends on the color you’ve been using. ”For example, if you color your hair dark brown, I would use heavy blond highlights to blend with your light roots to

Before you make a decision about hair color, be sure to ask your stylist a lot of questions. But, don’t be surprised when the stylist asks you questions as well. And don’t forget to bring photos of what you want! “Everyone is so different,” Daphne stressed. “What is your lifestyle? Coloring your hair requires a visit to the salon every four to six weeks for most people.” Now that you’ve grown out that beautiful gray, how do you care for it? The environment in our area causes specific issues – sometimes minerals in the water can cause gray to yellow. If this happens, Daphne recommends a purple-tinted shampoo to keep your gray hair whiter and brighter. And, don’t expect your hair to be the same after it grays. “Gray hair is not your same hair. Clients ask me what’s wrong with their hair, and I tell them it’s different because it’s gray.” “It’s so nice that gray hair is more fashionable now,” Daphne told me as we finished our conversation. “Women are embracing their gray and I love it. Just remember, it’s not an easy process, no matter what you do. I just try to make it as easy as possible.”

Why We Love Lilly! By Amy Bunn
Every piece of jewelry tells a story Broadway at the Beach (843)445-7910 Barefoot Landing (843)281-0736
We believe elegance can be casual. We believe gracefulness is compatible with fits of laughter. We believe it is completely acceptable to be sexy. We believe in dinner parties, charity parties and parties in general. We believe in living a colorful life. ~Lilly Pulitzer~ Lilly Pulitzer herself was an icon, she was a Palm Beach socialite that loved life and she loved it in color! Another of her often repeated quotes is “Life, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness!” Her brand, to this day, is and will always be about being happy, and her clothes can’t help but make you feel that way! The colors are all created in house and one of a kind, and all the prints are hand painted and inspired by places that either Lilly has been in the past or where the print designers go to get their inspiration! Most of them are very tropical places where flowers, fish and architecture steal the show! Every Lilly print starts on paper with a brush, and each piece is truly a work of art! One of the many special features of your Lilly, including great quality and fit, is that each print has “Lilly” hidden in the design; it’s always fun trying to find it! Lilly Pulitzer is a true “lifestyle brand,” you can literally find something for every occasion – beach, weddings, cocktail party, gym and everything in between! Lilly, I’m happy to say, is here to stay, she’s always keeping up with the trends as well as just being true to who she’s always been – a fun colorful way to dress! Wearing Lilly just makes you happy and I think that’s what this world needs more of – HAPPY!!!

Sister, Beautify Thyself by Zile Elliven
In the not-too-distant past, I used to wake up, drag myself out of bed, find a way to get my sleep-addled brain to feed the kids – and myself, stuff them into their clothes, and finally, finally get myself dressed. More often than not, the result of all of this was that, when I came home from dropping the boys off at school, I got a shock when I caught a glimpse of the drab, scary lady in the mirror. After enough of those shocks, I asked myself, “What’s going on here? I used to make more of an effort. Why did I stop? It can’t be the exhaustion. Back in college, I only got about four hours of sleep at night because I would get up early to spend an hour on my hair, face and wardrobe.” I spent some time thinking about it and realized it was because, in the past, I had been getting myself dressed up for other people rather than for myself. Once I started to work from home, I had no one to impress but myself and, after a couple of years of being out of the public eye I had totally let myself go. Yikes.
Which leads me to the next thing I did – I stopped worrying about what other people thought of me and started worrying about what I thought of me. After all, I’m the one who has to live in here! No combination of clothes and makeup was going to make me feel good if I wasn’t happy with the results. Once I had a new mindset, it opened me up to all kinds of possibilities. I tried out subtle eyeliner colors – colors I would have sneered at in the past – and loved them. Alternately, I also chose bright, “notice me” shades of lipstick I had never been comfortable trying before. “Forget what everyone else thinks,” I told myself, “If you want hot pink lips, you do it!”
“I stopped worrying about what other people thought of me and started worrying about what I thought of me.”
I wasn’t a giant fan of this revelation, so I vowed to spruce myself up a bit. I traded my yoga pants and nursing tops in for my pre-kids wardrobe. Unfortunately, while I began to enjoy taking time for myself every day, I didn’t like the end result. The waxy, red, Vampirella lipstick of the past and the tight, “look at the girls!” tank tops I used to wear weren’t exactly play date friendly gear. Increasingly, I felt uncomfortable in my clothes and fake behind the makeup. The problem was that I was dressing for who I used to be, not who I am now. Clearly, wearing the club-hopping clothes of the free-spirited girl I was before kids wasn’t going to suit the lifestyle I have now. The flowing, gauzy skirts alone were a nightmare to contemplate in the world of mashed bananas, impromptu tackle-hugs and drive-by booger attacks I lived in now. I had to figure out the “new me” – someone who could comfortably take rolling around in the mud and crawling on the floor while simultaneously managing to be happy with how she looked doing it. In short, my style needed to evolve.
had before.
Then something pretty cool began to happen, I got compliments all the time! When I had the nerve to press people for details, the majority of people told me I looked happier and more myself than I
What a crazy idea. When I pick out clothes and makeup I like, it actually looks good? It was a revelation – one I grabbed tightly and ran with. I started wrapping brightly colored scarves around my hips to give those yoga pants some decoration. I let my hair grow long and refused to put it in a ponytail because, why not? Who cares if it’s a bit messy? It makes me happy and, apparently, a happy me is a pretty me. I may not look my best one hundred percent of the time, but I no longer get the “scary lady” shock I used to because I’m wearing something I feel good in. And regardless of how much effort I put in on myself on a given day, I still feel good because I make sure to take a little bit of time, just for me, to show myself how important I am. And I think that’s beautiful.
The only way I could do this was to pitch everything I knew about being pretty right out the window. I now had to factor in comfort and durability as well as style. I also had to embrace some of the staples I just couldn’t live without. Let’s face it, ladies, yoga pants are magical, and I could truly give less than a monkey’s hairball about what someone thinks is trendy these days when it comes to my comfort.
42
The culmination of all of this experimenting was a newer, brighter, more comfortable me. A me who felt beautiful because I wasn’t trying to fit into a mold of who I thought I should be. Instead of dressing up to impress other people, I dressed according to what I wanted.
