from the Editor Planning events and playing hostess is my jam – literally. One of the best aspects of a party is creating the perfect playlist to match the vibe and excite the guests (which depends on which of my friends or family are attending). Luckily, I listen to a wide variety of genres and I know my people very well. My ultimate goal is to get everyone bopping their heads and singing along together.

To accompany the music, another essential detail that helps harmonize the ambiance of the special occasion is the décor. These days, there are so many DIY ways to design a space with a definitive style. Declaring a theme is always an interesting way to spice up the mood, especially if all of the party attendees have to dress up as well.

Account Executives Erica Schneider Gay Stackhouse

Another fun element of planning an event is the yummy food. An aesthetically pleasing and easy culinary display to prepare is the supertrendy charcuterie board. I do believe there are other important facets than just the meats and cheeses but having a myriad of cheeses IS most certainly non-negotiable. To arrange the most colorful and flavorful board, you should also include a variety of bread, crackers, nuts, fruits, jams, spreads, olives, pickled items, and even some chocolatey treats.

No matter how big or small the get-together is, a personal favorite activity of mine is playing games. A friendly competition is an amusing way for everyone to interact and get to know one another. I have always loved all sorts of games and I grew up playing with my family and constantly begged my parents for another round. My dad and papa both taught me many games and I cherish that quality time we spent together. My dad even wanted me to become very skilled with quarters so that when I went to college, I could beat all the boys and never be taken advantage of. Father’s Day isn’t the only day to commemorate dad for having your back, but he sure is a great reason to throw a party and celebrate. Cheers!

Chaos Coordinator & Celebration Creator: Ashley Pate Newkirk by Sarah Elaine Hawkinson

From a young age, Ashley’s energy could be characterized as motivated and detail-oriented. She’s always had an eye for opportunity, an appetite for hard work, and the confidence to problem solve any situation. Although she originally wanted to be a lawyer, after graduating from St. James High School and starting her studies at the University of South Carolina, she quickly realized that practicing law was not her passion. As many students experience, she faced the obstacle of switching her major numerous times searching for “it” – the feeling of doing what you were meant to do that everyone deserves. She was lost and decided to come home during her junior year of college to focus on what she really wanted for her future. Ironically, this time frame happened to be when one of her best friends was getting married. Ashley was a bridesmaid and on the day of the wedding, the planner never showed up. As the natural “jump in and save the day” person that Ashley is, she and her now-husband, Cory, instantly came to the rescue. They decorated, coordinated, and handled all aspects of the event making the day a beautiful celebration. “On the way home, my heart was exploding!” Ashley exclaimed, “I finally realized what it felt like to do something I truly loved!” She immediately started booking interviews with local wedding coordinators so that she could find an internship. Many of the companies stated that to be hired later on as a full-time coordinator, a college degree was a necessity. Good thing Ashley’s determination and hands-on work ethic outshined any classroom learning. She explained, “The difference was that the other interns were there for 8 :: Sasee.com :: June 2022

a course credit, and I was there to start a career.” After a short time, Ashley was hired as a planner. Not only did she learn how to plan and coordinate, but she fully submerged herself into the industry from catering, floral design, and venue management. She became an expert on helping others celebrate their special day. In 2018, Ashley officially opened her own company, Ash Events, with her first intern and righthand lady, Callie Walton. Her primary focus will always be weddings, but she also plans proposals, bridal showers, baby showers, birthday parties, engagement parties, and charity events. These types of events tie in well with Pawleys Picnics, another company that Ashley started with her sweet friend, Jana Tyler Gibson, who is also a talented photographer with Magnolia Photography. During quarantine, as the world was shifting away from big parties, the idea behind this business venture was to create small, intimate gatherings that still feel like planned, curated experiences. From cute date nights for couples to petite soirées for close groups of friends, Pawleys Picnics can handle many types of unforgettable get-togethers. Most recently, Ashley and Jana also paired up with Jessie Johnson, the brilliant floral designer who owns Willow Event Designs, to launch Caluna Event Design Collective, which is also a new venue space in Pawleys Island. The personalities and styles of these three entrepreneurs complement each other well and many of their clients need all three to plan their perfect occasion. Caluna makes the process of planning easier so that the client can understand all of their unique, skilled perspectives while also being the perfect intimate

venue for doing so. Ashley’s business mindset is as dynamic as it is inspirational. When I asked what makes an event successful, Ashley replied, “Teamwork! Knowing that I have the right vendors and team to help me every step of the way means that no matter what goes wrong or unplanned, we are going to fix it. Some people are quick to panic, but we put our whole hearts into every event and we always find a solution. We never

give up!” Not only does Ashley love to travel for events she plans, but she also dreams of growing Ash Events. If there is a business that knows how to plan and coordinate the most iconic celebrations, it’s Ashley and her enthusiastic team.

Wise Words from Dad by Rakaia Geddes

“Glasses half full and not half empty, Kaia,” my dad often said to me before I’d step out of the car for school each morning. If it wasn’t this one, he might have chosen “Carpe Diem” or even translated it to “seize the day” instead. I know I was grateful for his attempts at sending me off with a light dusting of positivity, but the painfully overused clichés frequently left my eyes in a squint. I’ve always been naturally anxious and stubborn, and he sensed I could use the reminders regardless of how many times I’d heard them before. The irony, perhaps, was in the fact that my father was the least likely person to use clichés. Like a character from out of a movie, his words were ones you would write down, ones you would hold on to. His entire disposition was eccentric. He was the most particular eater on planet Earth and could leave you in tears of laughter for two whole days at one-liners delivered with a straight face. He sported a jacket made entirely of old newspapers. I grew up hearing about his strange vehicles, like a green Plymouth with no door handles that had to be unlocked from the inside and an old mail truck he purchased not for employment, but for the principle of the matter. As a devout lover of the fine arts, he was so musically gifted that it might have left him off-center in some areas. My dad was every bit as loving and wise as he was interesting. Equipped with a peaceful sense of understanding, he didn’t need excess validation or reconsiderations. I’ve realized that he didn’t need to make original the wisdom that resides in such oftmentioned phrases. In such an often-gloomy world, a simple saying told him that looking toward the light while in the dark would prove fruitful. It isn’t pessimism and half-empty glasses that help you trudge onward. This approaching Father’s Day holiday is the second I will spend without him. Father’s Day is the occasion to celebrate paternal bonds and the influence they have had on you and your life, so it’s an understandably 10 :: Sasee.com :: June 2022

difficult task to not feel melancholy without your own. Though I miss him endlessly, I hear the echo of his voice telling me to look on the bright side. There can be no better way to remember and honor his legacy. An old friend of my dad’s recently reached out to me with a few letters he wrote to him. Aside from the surreality of it, I was transported back to a time before me, before so many of the things that led to his becoming my father. In reading over his cursive scrawl, I am reminded of his diligence, passion, and enthusiasm for life and everything that makes it worthwhile. In his words lie his history, my family’s history. Perhaps the most notable defining characteristic in my father of all was the hope so deeply embedded in his soul. Hope is simultaneously miraculous and irrational. Sometimes it’s all we have. Painful things are to come everyone’s way. Confrontations with the beautiful, the ugly, the heartbreaking, and the absurd will make scattered menageries of our pasts, leaving each of us a choice: to view our glasses as being half empty, or halffilled.

Rakaia Geddes is a recent graduate from Coastal Carolina University with a degree in English and journalism. She will be returning to CCU in the fall for an M.A. in Writing, and hopes to earn a PhD in literature one day. She loves to read, write, go for walks, and spend time with her Shih Tzus. You might catch her crouched in the aisles of Barnes and Noble, or dancing in caffeinated spasms at red lights.

Gets Personal with Dawn Richardson: Grady’s Jewelers With high hopes, talent, and just a handful of jewelry, Dawn’s father, Grady opened a jewelry shop in 1970. Along with the help of Dawn’s mother, Adelle, the family successfully created a thriving business in Downtown Conway. Just as Dawn earned her degree at Coastal Carolina University, she took over ownership of the store and the jewelry repair department in the early 2000s. Although a lot has changed and grown in the shop over the last 52 years, one thing has remained the same: Grady’s Jewelers has outstanding customer service as well as an excellent selection of fine jewelry. It is also the perfect place to shop for all occasions worth celebrating. A memorable purchase is one of Dawn’s favorite ways to celebrate along with a trip, vacation, or a party. When it comes to an exquisite party, she believes that it should have several elements including good food, great friends, and the addition of a theme is the cherry on top. As far as food, Dawn likes charcuterie boards and recently saw a “breakfast board” that would be great for brunch as it was made up of waffles, bacon, sausage, and pastries. Her favorite refreshing drinks to sip during the summertime are lemonade and of course, icecold sweet tea. Attending a party is fun, but she also enjoys helping plan and decorate. Another aspect of a good party that most can agree on is that playing good music is a definite necessity. Dawn’s husband is a musician, and she has always cherished experiencing live music. Some of her favorite bands are the Eagles, Casting Crowns, CT Townsend, Garth Brooks, and Chris Stapleton. She has always loved many different types of artists and is appreciative of all genres. She explained, “When I hear certain songs, they take me back to a specific place in time and it can totally change my outlook and mood at the time.” For Dawn, every day is the perfect day to celebrate. 16 :: Sasee.com :: June 2022

A Selfless Celebration by Glenda Ferguson

I was surprised when I received a birthday card in the mail from my friend Jenny. This was her birthday month, not mine. Even though I moved out of state years ago, I still missed our friendship and especially our epic birthday celebrations – the day trips to local areas, impromptu parties, and a victory birthday dance on the tennis court during a tennis tournament. Inside Jenny’s birthday card was a check and instructions. She was celebrating her 70th birthday by sending several of her friends a check for $70. The money was mine to spend on a favorite charity or a worthwhile person. That was just like Jenny to think of others. In 2021, in our community, there were numerous local charities and people that needed assistance. Many lost jobs due to the shutdowns of restaurants and hotels. There were residents who needed groceries and their pets needed food. Our hospital had many young patients, often isolated from family members. This project became my mission to celebrate Jenny’s birthday. I decided to be observant about where the funds were most needed and get the money to that place or person quickly. When I received an appreciation for a donation, I would let the charity or person know it came from Jenny. In addition, I matched the $70, so that the amount was now doubled.

and left an extra tip. She said, “What a generous idea that your friend wanted to reach out and help others on her own birthday!” Because Jenny loved her dogs and cats, I donated items to the local humane society in her name. I received a wonderful note from the director of the shelter in appreciation of giving in their time of need. Since my cat Speckles was due for a checkup, I let the veterinarians know I wanted to support their clinic with extra funds in my friend’s name. During the holidays, a teacher collected toy donations in memory of her son who passed away. All the toys went to the children’s hospital where he spent his last days. Jenny was overjoyed to know that her birthday funds were used in such a worthwhile children’s project. When I finished my mission of donating all the funds, I mailed Jenny a birthday card. Inside I included a note about all the charities, people, and pets she helped. All of the generosity was made possible through her selfless celebration. I can’t wait to celebrate my birthday in the same way.

Our county food pantry asked for donations to “January is Soup-er Bowl Month.” I enjoyed shopping and selected a variety of cans of soup at the grocery store. As I dropped them off at the site, I included a note explaining my donation was in honor of my friend. When my husband Tim and I ate out at our favorite restaurant, the owner was attentive and kind as usual. We knew she worked long hours just to keep her business open and care for her two special-needs children. I told the owner about my friend’s birthday

The Happiest Hours: Cyndi Moran, Hot Fish Club You may remember it as the “Hot and Hot Fish Club” or you may now know it as one of the best venues on the inlet to listen to some groovin’ tunes, but this gathering place is more dynamic than ever thanks to the current owners, Cyndi Moran and her long-time friends, Kathy and Phillip Bates. Originally founded in the late 1700s, the social club was dedicated to gourmet food, delicious beverages, and festive times. In spirit of those earlier revelers, Hot Fish Club (and all of its best traditions) was re-established in its current location by Morse Park Landing in the oldest existing restaurant building in Murrells Inlet. As a co-owner for the last 11 years, Cyndi Moran is most likely the sweet and friendly face you see when you first enter the restaurant. As a life-long fan of live music, Cyndi loves a little bit of everything, but especially songs that get people dancing. “Growing up as an army brat, I moved around often, and I was so fortunate to live in Germany during my high school years.” Cyndi continued, “My friends and I would travel by train to see concerts in huge fields on the weekends. There was no drinking age, and we had a blast listening to some of our favorite bands like Journey and Lover Boy.” Luckily, the business Cyndi is part-owner of also features the liveliest entertainment every weekend in their Gazebo, just behind the restaurant overlooking the marsh. Regardless of which genre is playing for the night, the Gazebo will always be the place to be when you feel like getting down and letting loose. More than awesome music, refreshing drinks, and insanely tasty cuisine, the hospitality and service of this business are immaculate. Just as the owners are all like family to each other, they feel the same way about all of their hardworking employees and their highly appreciative guests. 22 :: Sasee.com :: June 2022

While Hot Fish Club services include catering and private party planning, Cyndi also loves to celebrate her personal life with fine dining food. Spending time with her loved ones while also having quality eats and drinks is her idea of a good time. With all of the positive energy and admiring effort she devotes to taking care of others at work, a night off to be the one waited on for a change is well deserved. Most recently, Hot Fish Club has become a triple threat now that they have opened a third bar. The Char Bar, short for Charcuterie Bar, is the perfect spot to wait for your table or have a unique dining experience. On top of their rotating selection of fabulous wines and smoked cocktails, their dynamic charcuterie boards are all the rage. Cyndi loves how dynamic the boards are as she explained, “In addition to the wide variety of cheeses (which is my favorite part), I also love the little jams and spreads too, like fig or pepper jelly, and you can never go wrong with adding a little chocolate.” Connected to the main restaurant, this intimate side bar can be entered from the front or back porch and is happily open from 4 ‘til whenever. After you’ve worked up an appetite from the drinks and all the boogieing, the Char Bar has you covered with some late-night grub. Although their full kitchen closes at 9, they now offer finger-food baskets such as tacos, sliders, and chicken fingers from 9pm to 1am. The exciting atmosphere that these amazing owners have created is guaranteed to be an unforgettable time for friends and family to mingle and celebrate any occasion. Although the Hot Fish goers now may be different than those members of the original club on Drunken Jack Island…their time spent at Hot Fish Club can still be described as some of the “happiest hours of their lives.”
