Looking to Lose Weight This Summer? Let Dr. Sattele and the Rapid Weight Loss Team Help You Make It Happen! I am a certified scuba diver and love to dive. But I had not been diving in two years because my dive gear didn’t fit me anymore. Every year at the time of my yearly physical my doctor would say that I needed to lose weight and that by doing so I should be able to stop taking medication for my blood pressure which I have in fact been able to do. I began Dr. Sattele’s program on January 14, 2021. I lost 107 pounds in 7 months and have kept it off to date! The program was easy to follow and I was able to eat real foods. Following the program changed the way that I think about food and the way it is prepared. Dr. Sattele’s staff is helpful, encouraging, and supportive. I now have increased confidence. My family and friends are impressed with my progress and that I have been able to keep the weight off. I would and have recommended this program to family and friends because it is easy to follow. When you follow a structured eating plan learned while on the program you can keep the unwanted weight off even when you leave the program.

About the Cover Artist:

Art entered Sanja Jancic’s life during early childhood, when she attended her mother’s concerts, who was an opera singer at the Belgrade Opera. Sanja dedicated herself to music, as a cellist and a composer, as well as to painting, her earliest love. Her artistic focus is people, primarily women, who try to express their being through beauty, personal, or the environment in which they find themselves. She explained, “I believe that Eros and Thanatos are forces of the creative and destructive, and their struggle takes place through human souls. That is what inspires me and what I often show in my works of art.” Sanja’s favorite medium is acrylic and her style is primarily expressive. The characteristics of her artwork are predominantly warm tones and bright contrasts. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions and are on the walls of homes around the world. www.artfinder.com/manage/sanja-jancic/#/ www.saatchiart.com/sanjajancic www.singulart.com/en/artist/sanja-jančić-34359 4 :: Sasee.com :: July 2022

from the Editor Twenty years is a significant amount of time. July of 2002 was the summer I celebrated my 6th birthday. My party involved playing in the neighborhood pool and eating what is still one of my favorite foods - pizza. I think it’s extra special to reflect on the fact that some of those party guests are still my friends today. Lizzie, Tori, Abby, and I all met when I moved from Dallas, Texas, to the Grand Strand community. During the fall of 2002, I began first grade at Waccamaw Elementary School. This was also the time frame that I started twirling batons and learning from my inspirational coach, Laura Card. To get competition ready, I would take the bus to her house every day after school. My bus rides consisted of putting on my headphones and slipping my favorite mini discs into my Hit Clips player (until the iPod took over a few years later). These tunes mostly consisted of ABBA, *NSYNC, Madonna, Aaron Carter, and of course, Britney Spears. Oh, the nostalgia! I even dressed up as Britney for Halloween that year because as a child, being a pop star was a dream.

Music has always been a constant in my life, and although I am not a pop star, loving my career was always a real dream of mine. The opportunity of returning to my community as a working adult is especially fulfilling. To live where I grew up and genuinely enjoy my work life as an editor, outreach coordinator, and performer, is the highest gratification. Although a lot has changed in the last two decades, I truly adore and appreciate the aspects that have also remained the same.

Happy 20th Birthday, Sasee by Rose Ann Sinay

The first time I read a Sasee Magazine I was waiting (impatiently) for my appointment with my new doctor. She was already ten minutes late, and I hated waiting. I looked around the room full of patients and realized I had to relax. I could be there a long time. This appointment was one of the last items to be checked off my list of things to do as my husband and I became acclimated to our new home in coastal North Carolina. I had located the necessities: the grocery stores, local bank, medical facilities, and local restaurants that would make us a part of the “neighborhood.” I hadn’t had the time or inclination to explore further than the town’s borders. I crossed my knees to keep from tapping an annoying SOS with the heel of my shoe. I repeated a mantra in my head--I no longer had a pressing place I had to be. Life moved slower here away from the hustle and bustle of the working world–which is why we retired to this quaint coastal town. We could enjoy life. I sifted through well-worn reading material strewn across two side tables: golf and motorcycle magazines, a Newsweek, a Women’s Day, and a Readers’ Digest. There was only one that caught my eye. The cover was a piece of art: a woman adorned in scarves and flowers. The title, Sasee, scrolled across the top margin in a fancy script. I picked it up to keep my hands busy and take my mind off the reason for the appointment. I flipped through the issue, stopping to note a few jewelry store advertisements. The ads were bright and attractive; seductive, not intrusive. The pictures introduced me to places I wanted to visit. I thumbed through to a page with a title and byline–a story. I settled back into my chair, my foot solidly fixed to the floor, and began to read. It was a short story. I would be able to finish it before my name was called. 12 :: Sasee.com :: July 2022

The essay was about a family event gone wrong. It was entertaining and ended on a humorous note. I looked for another one. The minutes ticked by, but I didn’t notice. I was halfway through the second story when the nurse called my name. One more minute–I needed one minute to finish reading the story–I couldn’t just leave it. What if someone picked up this magazine while I was gone? I tucked it under my arm and brought Sasee with me. Every month I looked forward to the new issue–a treasure trove of information, enticements, and entertainment. Friends and I made day-long shopping trips to previously unexplored North and South Carolina areas like the Hammock Shops, Pawleys Island (one of my favorites), and the multitude of markets and boutiques featured in the magazine. And, of course, we stopped for lunch at charming restaurants that I recognized from my “guide.” It was several years before I submitted an essay of my own. My piece was a sweet memory for me, but would anyone else be interested to read my nostalgic meanderings? I wasn’t so sure. I sent it anyway. Almost a month passed before I received a response. I was elated (and relieved) that my submission would appear in the next issue. I celebrated by buying a piece of jewelry to mark the occasion at a shop–you guessed it–advertised in Sasee Magazine. I devoured the features written for the publication by the other writers. Feeling a bit insecure, I tried to compare my writing to theirs, but our perspectives were so creatively different. After a year of reading my favorite authors, I could identify each of them by their tone and style. They were strangers… but not strangers. Erika Hoffman, Linda O’Connell, Jeffery Cohen, Diane Stark, Melissa Face, and Joan Leota, (Sasee contributors) began to feel like old friends. I knew more about their

inner thoughts than I did some of the people I saw every day. We had that particular commonality of nonfiction writers: we pulled happy, funny, and sad memories from our hearts and laid them bare for all to see.

*** This year, Sasee celebrates twenty years of its publication. Every issue is a map of unique places to see and fun things to do for residents as well as tourists. It has introduced us to some of the interesting people that reside in our expanded neighborhood. This journal of delights with its southern flair is where you can find that sparkling moment that defines a vacation or an ordinary day. There’s something special for everyone bursting between the covers. The Birth of Sasee... Featuring Publisher Delores Blount Have you ever wondered how Sasee Magazine was born in the first place? It all started with Delores Blount and her career change from the broadcast industry to print. The company she was working for wanted to start publishing magazines and asked her if she would be interested in taking on a management role. Delores obliged, “I was ready for something new and challenging! The transition made sense because I already understood the marketing and advertising side of the business, but I was excited to utilize those skills with publishing rather than broadcasting.” In 1986, Strand Media Group began publishing Strand Magazine. Strand Coupons and Strand Map Guide came along a few years later. On top of these three well-known pieces, two of which are still published today, Strand Media also created all sorts of publications for local businesses including the Chamber of Commerce, theater guides, rental guides, and real estate books. They also established Charleston Gateway Magazine and Charleston Map Guide which were sold last year. The idea for a women’s magazine came along a decade later. This was around the same time that Delores’ sister, Susan Bryant, joined Strand Media Group once again as the director of marketing and sales. The pair always loved reading the women’s magazines they came across while visiting other places during their travels. The publications were inspiring, and they agreed that the Grand Strand needed a magazine that was for women and produced by women. Delores explained, “We knew this type of publication would do well in our market and it was definitely a fun change of pace to research and produce!”

After months of surveying potential readers, writers, and advertisers, they came up with a list of strong female names to choose from. They also learned that the best name to go with should not be a real word. Once they decided on the name “Sassy,” they just tweaked the spelling to make her unique. The marketing department played around with the fonts and illustrations and once they tried the hat above the “S” they knew it was the perfect aesthetic to fit Sasee’s personality. Although many aspects of publishing have changed in the last two decades, Sasee is still the same woman she always has been, with quite a few fabulous upgrades. The mission of Sasee has forever been to entertain, inform, and inspire her readers as well as share dynamic experiences. She is meant to be an inviting platform to reach other women by showcasing sophisticated, well-written editorial focusing on personal interviews, lifestyle perspectives, fashion, home décor, food, art, and culture. As the publisher of Sasee for twenty years, Delores is most proud of her enthusiastic staff and the wonderful partnerships that have been established with local businesses. She is also pleased with the fact that we have been able to survive during these crazy times as many businesses have not been as fortunate. Sasee is excited to celebrate officially turning twenty by thanking all of her devoted readers, writers, and advertisers as she would not be who she is without them as part of her community.

Coming Home by Diane DeVaughn Stokes

Ever since my first visit to Myrtle Beach from my hometown of Florence, South Carolina, I wanted to live on the Grand Strand. It was high school trips with my friends that drew me here: Beach parties, nightclubs like the Pad, The Spanish Galleon, the Myrtle Beach Pavilion, the ocean, the salt air. I loved it all. There were several times over the years after college that I had job offers to make the move but high rents, even back in the seventies, were higher than the salaries I was being offered, and less money than I was making in Florence as Director of Sales for two Holiday Inns, Cohosting a live radio show, and free-lancing with WBTWTV 13, and a local weekly magazine. Yes, it took all those jobs to make one decent salary. However, I smile now as I recall the offer to do a live radio show from Shoney’s for TIGER Radio in Myrtle Beach. Then came a request from Lakewood Campground and their theme park, Magic Harbor, to help with Marketing and Public Relations. Coast Magazine came calling with a writing and sales position, but the economics of rent versus salary still kept me in Florence. Fast forward to 1984, I was now working full-time in television hosting, producing, and selling advertising for my live Talk show with WPDE-TV 15, where my soon-to-be husband, Chuck, was also working as a Commercial Producer. The General Manager had been pressuring me to anchor the news, but I refused every time. Yes, I was offered three times my talk-show salary, but it was not what I wanted to do. I loved the “TALK” format! So, in order to try to force me to come his way, he canceled my show. That was a God-wink. It gave Chuck and I the impetus to move to Myrtle Beach, a place we both loved and wanted to live, and knew TV stations were rumored to be moving their home offices there in the near future.

22 :: Sasee.com :: July 2022

And the rest is history. Thanks to WBTW TV-13 for hiring us, and Cox Cable which soon became Time Warner, we were able to make a living in Myrtle Beach, leading to our own business, Stages Video Productions in 1989. But the point of this career scenario is that we are now facing retirement in a few years. Many of our friends are moving to lesser-trafficked locations looking for a slower pace. And I get it! The area is getting somewhat congested. It’s not the way it used to be. But what is? Some friends are moving to be nearer their children but since we do not have any children it is not a concern for us. So, when people ask us if we plan to stay here when we retire, we say, “of course.” Why would we want to start over somewhere else? Finding new doctors in a new town, when we are at an age that we need them the most, would be very stressful. And why would we want to feel like strangers in a foreign land? We make friends easily, but we would miss the ones we have here. After all, this is a place we always wanted to live and have lived for almost forty years. We know the lady who hangs her head out of the drive-thru window at the dry cleaners. We know the pharmacy folks and they know us. We totally trust our car repairman. Chuck and I shop at small businesses and know the owners and their parents and their kids. Having volunteered for many non-profits, we feel like family and want to continue to help and even volunteer for some of them in retirement to stay busy. What about our church family? We love them and they love us. You can’t put a value on that! And after almost fifty years in local television, I have

Beach Dreaming people come up to me regularly and say, “Hey, you interviewed my grandfather!” Yes, it makes me feel old, but it also makes me feel very proud to hear it.

July 13 - August 6

Sadly, due to health issues, there may come a time when we have to move to be nearer to a niece or nephew who can assist us in our Golden years. But for now, we are staying put! We are connected here. This is OUR community. We helped to make it what it has become. Oh, we may travel more in retirement, but just like when we return from vacation now, our heart flutters a little bit more the closer we get to Myrtle Beach.

Gets Personal with Editor Sarah Elaine Hawkinson Q: When you were offered the position as Editor of Sasee Magazine in 2020 we were smack down in the middle of the pandemic. What was your vision going into that year? “With all of the hardship over the previous six months, I was so ready for a positive. I also had so much creative energy and was thrilled to finally put it to some good use. Not to mention that after graduating from college, I didn’t have a clue what my next step was. For over a year, I interviewed for countless jobs that were not what I call an ‘exciting career.’ Editor of Sasee, on the other hand, has been incredibly dynamic and creative. I am all for empowering women and I have always wanted to make my living by doing something that truly sparked joy within me so when this job opportunity presented itself, I was most definitely excited and inspired to get started.” Q: Explain how you choose the content that goes into Sasee each month? “Choosing the content starts with the editorial calendar. I create the themes for the whole year which sets the tone for each monthly issue. One of the first steps I take to begin a new issue is to read all of our free-lance writer’s submissions and pick the top 10-15 stories that flow well with our monthly theme and I give those to our publisher to read. After she selects her favorites, I edit and submit them. Our entire Sasee team has a meeting to discuss which local woman and/ or business would be best for me to interview and write a story on that is parallel to our theme. We also have special advertorial features each month that I write on a selected advertiser. One of my favorite, yet most time-consuming aspects is finding artwork for the cover. As you can see, Sasee loves bold, beautiful pieces of women.” Q: What has been your biggest challenge since beginning this journey at Sasee? “Ironically enough, the actual writing. I have always been great with words when speaking but I had not physically written my thoughts down very often before this job. I am not sure Sasee readers know this, but my major was not English during college – I have a business degree. Re-educating myself on specific grammar has been a learning curve. You can also see from my answers here that I sometimes am a woman of ‘too many’ words and editing myself down in word length can be a challenge. I do strongly believe my business education helps me with certain areas of my work now, but classroom learning does not solely get you where you need to be. When it comes to facing challenges, it’s skills like creativity, work ethic, and a positive attitude that help me succeed. I believe those types of characteristics are what land you a position you truly love and deserve.” Q: When you tell your friends you are the Editor of Sasee Magazine, what is their response? “They are so excited and love receiving their Sasee’s every month in the mail or hand-delivered by me. I am unbelievably grateful to have supportive friends and family. I also love meeting new people who recognize me from the magazine, and we get to bond over how much we adore Sasee and all of the wonderful inspiration she creates within our community.” 26 :: Sasee.com :: July 2022
