Letter from the Editor I know it’s still hot outside, but the change of seasons has begun along the coast. In September, the marsh grass begins to change, the rich green of summer changing to a lush golden hue, letting all of us who notice the little things know that something is different. The summer haze lifts a bit, the sky is a deeper blue, and toward the end of the month, we may wake up to temperatures that are slightly cooler, a refreshing break from the heat. As nature slows down, we get ready for all the fun in store over the coming months. Be sure and read our calendar – there is a lot going on this month. I believe you’ll enjoy this issue, I know we enjoyed putting it together. One of my favorites this month is about dogs, of course. Does everyone in your neighborhood get out and walk their dogs, stopping to chat and compare notes? I realized while writing this article that I know many of my neighbors only because I wanted to meet their dogs! If you don’t share your life with a dog or cat, September is a great month to find your new best friend. Our local animal shelters and rescues have been working hard to empty their kennels and cages in preparation for storm season. If you missed finding that special pet in August, there is a four-legged friend waiting for you. Enjoy all the wonderful little things in life this month!

Cover Artist Best Friends, by Mila Koenig

At the age of nine, Mila was at her grandparent’s cottage painting with her favorite watercolors. Her grandmother’s old cupboard was her first inspiration, and she created intricate paintings on the old piece of wood in bright oils which gave it a new life. The neighbors who came to see it were so impressed that they wanted her to paint on their old pieces as well. Mila’s love for creating live art was born. Many years later, her art still shines with joy. Her paintings depict real objects in the realm of the imagination: running horses, onions from the fresh market, an aristocratic family on vacation. She creates tangible sensations of light, color, fabrics and moods of her characters. By manipulating angles, color tones, and perspective the paintings are indirectly evocative of whatever mood is at play. Many things contribute to the creation of this special art, which emanates an uplifting energy. The right atmosphere has to be created in the form of inspirational music, aromas from fresh flowers and candles, and delicate lighting. Every painting comes with a story which not only gives it meaning, but a life of its own. Many of her inspirations come when Mila is playing the piano, and in her words, “the images float up and ask to be transformed onto the canvas.” To see more of the artist’s work, visit www.enigmainart.com. She welcomes personal orders from individuals and businesses.

Earning His Love by Diane Stark

I

fell in love with her the moment I saw her. Her huge brown eyes. Her beautiful, reddish brown hair. Her pointy little ears. She looked in my eyes and licked my nose, and I knew we had to take her home. She was a ten-week-old, four-pound bundle of fluff. They said she was a Pomeranian poodle mix, or Pomapoo, for short. We named her Piper. The rest of the family was as quickly enamored with Piper as I was. Except for my husband, Eric. He likes animals, but not as much as the rest of us. He agreed to adopt Piper because the kids and I wanted a dog, and he wanted to make us happy. “But she’s your dog,” he told the kids. “I don’t want to get stuck taking care of her. You wanted her and she’s your responsibility.” The kids promised to be the most responsible pet owners in the world. Now don’t get me wrong. Eric liked Piper. He enjoyed playing with her, and he thought she was cute. But he made it clear that he only liked her. He didn’t love her. And for some reason, I really wanted him to. And it was clear that Piper wanted that too. Somehow, she seemed to know that the rest of us were already smitten, but that she’d have to earn it with Eric. Because of his long work hours, Eric spent less time with Piper than the rest of us. This only made her more focused on gaining his attention. From an early age, she began waiting by the front door for him to get home from work. As soon as he came in, she’d jump up and down, beyond excited to see him. “Hi, Puppy Girl,” he’d say. “Did you have a good day?” Then he’d scoop her up and carry her into the kitchen where I was cooking dinner. “Why does she love Dad so much?” My kids would ask. “We love her more than he does, but she acts like she loves him the most.” I was quick to correct them. Pointing at myself, I’d say, “Well, she loves him the second most.” When she was a puppy, I would place her on Eric’s lap. “Look at her,” I’d say. “Don’t you just love her?” “I’ll love her when she stops pooping in the house.”

Piper was housebroken in record time. “She’s such a good girl,” I’d tell Eric. “Don’t you just love her?” “She’s okay, but why does she have to lick me all the time?” He’d answer. “She gets me all wet. I don’t like it.” Piper loves to give kisses. She licks the kids and me all the time. But she stopped licking Eric. One day, Piper was laying on the couch next to Eric. He was rubbing her belly. “I know you love her,” I said. “You just don’t want to admit it.” He shrugged. “I like her, but I don’t love her. She just lays around all the time. She should play more.” Piper immediately jumped off the couch and went to her toy basket. She brought back a squeaky toy and dropped it in Eric’s lap. Then she wagged her tail and stared at him expectantly. “Do you want me to throw this for you?” He asked her in a baby voice. For the next 30 minutes, he chased Piper around the house, never once catching her. Finally, he sat down next to me, breathless. “Man, she’s fast for a little dog,” he said. I grinned. “I know you love her.” He rolled his eyes. “She’s cute and she’s smart. She’s pretty well-behaved. And she’s fast.” “And you love her.” Another eye roll. “I really like her.” I scratched Piper behind her ears. “Daddy loves you, Piper, even if he never says it.” “I have five kids, and none of them is a Pomapoo,” he said. “I’m not her Daddy. I’m her owner.” That made me roll my eyes. Last week, the kids and I went on a road trip, leaving Eric and Piper

home by themselves. “Take care of my baby while I’m gone,” I told him. “You’re taking our babies with you,” he responded. As Eric packed the car with our bags, Piper could sense that we were leaving. She loves to ride in the car, and she rides along for school dropoff nearly every morning. When she sees us getting our shoes on, she sits down in front of the door so you either have to step over her or pick her up and take her with you. She was parked in front of the door, looking hopeful. “You’re not going this time, Honey,” I told her. To my surprise, Eric scooped her up in his arms and scratched behind her ears. “Nope, you’re staying here with me, kid,” he said.

My husband adopted a dog because he loves his family. But that little dog worked her way into his heart and earned his love, whether he’ll admit it or not. Because with people and with dogs, love isn’t about words. It’s about how we treat each other. To Piper, love means only licking the family members who like it. It means waiting by the front door to welcome us home. It means snuggling with a sick kid and then playing fetch with a bored one. We all agree that Piper has been a great addition to our family, and we all love her. Some of us say it out loud. Others just show it.

I reached out and patted her head. “You’re in good hands, Piper. Daddy will take great care of you.” I waited for Eric to say that he wasn’t Piper’s Daddy, but he didn’t say a word. As I pulled out of the garage, the last thing I saw was my husband holding the Pomapoo he claims not to love, stroking her fur and telling her everything was going to be all right.

Granny by Melissa Face

’ve been thinking about my childhood, longing for the simpler days, and wishing I could clean up my life’s messes the way you would mop your kitchen linoleum. One section, then another. “Good as new,” you’d say.

something left your arms sleeved in shades of purply blue. You blamed the bruises on aspirin.

I liked when you picked me up from school in your gray Chevelle. That whale of a car floated down Highway 460 and you didn’t mind giving it a little gas, especially right when the light turned green. You backed off once you reached the speed limit, though. You weren’t one to break a lot of rules.

You changed your bandage and revealed a slice of skin shaved back like parmesan. I held my own arm and winced. But you tended to your wound without even an “ouch,” doused it with rubbing alcohol, covered it and got back to work.

I remember sitting at your kitchen table, eating carrots dipped in ranch and working on my “lessons” as you called them. You let me eat as many after-school snacks as I wanted: dunkin’ sticks, hot chocolate, or something homemade you planned to save for Sunday lunch. You let me have it anyway. You chatted some while I did my homework, but you mostly kept busy with chores. You washed and peeled vegetables, shelled peas, and snapped beans. I nudged your Lazy Susan and watched your African Violets spin a kaleidoscope of green and purple. “You need to finish up your lessons, now,” you reminded me. Once I completed my work, I daydreamed by the kitchen window. I flipped through stacks of seed catalogs and gawked at pictures of unusual vegetables: purple potatoes, red carrots and bumpy gourds. Sometimes we walked to the back lot and ate apples from the tree or tasted tomatoes from the garden. We surveyed the farm, checked on the azaleas, and flattened down some of the raised spots the groundhogs made. “Ornery critters,” you’d mutter. I liked snooping around your bedroom when you were busy with other things. I peeked at your house dresses, arranged neatly in your closet and stiff on wire hangers, your shoes in rows on the hardwood floor. I found your closet was exactly like the rest of your life: clean and organized with no hidden surprises. What you see is what you get. I opened the makeup on your vanity, tubes of rounded, red lipstick and several black pencils. I wondered for the longest time what you did with those pencils. What were you drawing? I remember you cleaning your house with ammonia. “It stinks,” I complained. “Why do you clean with pneumonia?” “It’s ammonia,” you corrected. “Doesn’t your momma clean with this?” I’m pretty sure she didn’t. I remember the smell only from your house. Your house, sterile as an operating room. Windows up on nice days, floral breezes in the kitchen. You scrubbed and cleaned and polished and scrubbed some more. In later years, you had to be careful cleaning around the house, pruning azaleas, and working in the flower bed. The slightest brush against

“I don’t even remember it happening,” you told me. “So I guess it didn’t hurt much.”

I remember you as tall, strong and fearless. I can picture you in your green church dress that you knotted at the waist. I remember your hair, styled and colored, dark with violet hues. Sometimes Lady Clairol gave you more shades than she advertised. You always had good advice, too. Finish chores you like least, then do something you enjoy. And let yourself air out at night; parts need to breathe. The years have passed quickly. Twenty-three of them. I wish I could remember more. More than the azaleas, the smell of ammonia, and the pencils on your vanity. Something more than the shades of purple on your arms, your hair and your African Violets by the window. I wish I could forget some things, too. Like the way the corner of your mouth hung after the stroke, how you struggled to find words, and the way your walk became a shuffle. I wish I could forget my parents’ car parked in front of the funeral home, the knowing, denying, refusing. It’s all part of my memories of you; there’s no separating good from bad. It’s like the bowl of succotash on your Sunday table. I can’t spoon out a butter bean that hasn’t touched a tomato. But what would you say about the wanting to remember and the trying to forget? What would you tell me about my incessant daydreaming and worrying? “Worry is a waste. Do something practical.” What would you say about the messes in my life? Start with what I like least and fix that first, maybe. Clean up the mess. One spot at a time. Then, air it out. Things need to breathe. Good as new.

Is Bankruptcy Right for Me?

by Spencer Powell, Attorney, Clemmons Law Firm lose any assets – that’s a common misconception many people have, but, by law, you are allowed to keep certain properties you need to survive, like your house and your car, depending on their value. If you and your attorney decide bankruptcy is your best option, he or she will draft a petition that outlines your financial situation, listing debts and assets. Then your petition is filed with the court, and you are required to talk to a trustee about your financial situation. There are many different types of bankruptcies, but the two most common for individuals are Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy extinguishes your consumer debt, while Chapter 13 establishes a payment plan suited to your income, giving you a chance to pay back all or a part of your debt over time. You’ll most likely only have to go to court one time, and once your bankruptcy claim is completed, you are free to start rebuilding your financial life. The majority of my clients say filing for bankruptcy is the best thing they’ve ever done. They walk out of court with a weight lifted off of their shoulders.

C

onstantly worrying about how to pay the bills is stressful, and bankruptcy is certainly one option to help you start over. If you are considering filing bankruptcy, the first thing to look at is your debt to income ratio. Do you have enough money to pay the essential bills, the ones needed to survive, such as mortgage payments, utilities, car payment, etc.? Next look at your consumer debt, do you have enough income to pay your credit card bills, anything that’s non-essential? If you are only financially able to pay the basics each month, you may want to consider bankruptcy. Barely paying the minimum on your consumer debt each month causes the bills to get higher and higher, and with a few missed payments you are in default and in danger of being sued by your creditors. Talking to your attorney is the next step. A lot of people don’t realize that you can own property and file for bankruptcy. Most of my clients don’t

14

The next thing my clients want to know is how to start over. I tell them to start small. Go to the bank and ask for a secured credit card. You put $200-$300 in a secured account to back up the card, and then use it to buy gas, groceries, etc. It’s important to pay the card off every month. This will help build up your credit again. Another important part of your post-bankruptcy plan is to periodically check your credit report. If any of your old debt is still listed, file a dispute with the credit company. It’s an easy fix. Follow these steps and you could easily have good credit again in one to two years. If you are having trouble making ends meet because of consumer debt, it is worthwhile to talk to an attorney to see if bankruptcy is right for you. Clemmons Law Firm offers a no-fee consultation, and we will help you decide whether or not bankruptcy is in your best interest. For many people, bankruptcy offers a way to start your financial life over again. As an attorney, it’s very gratifying to hear my clients tell me I’ve given them a new start in life, a way to see beyond the horizon. For the Birds

by Diane DeVaughn Stokes

E

ach year just like the swallows arriving back at Capistrano, green herons fly into the empty lot across the lake from my house. Okay, it’s not a big lake, and some might even call it a man-made drainage ditch, but to the fifteen or so of us who bought homes on Birdfield Lake in Myrtle Beach, it’s definitely a lake. Not to mention, these lots were being sold for $10,000 more than the others in the neighborhood. It’s just awesome to have water in your backyard that brings ducks, geese, turtles, blue herons, egrets and other of God’s creatures that provide lots of folly and free entertainment, especially if you are a nature lover like me. My nieces call me “Aunt Snow White,” and I must admit I am over the top about taking care of outdoor friends. Gosh even that sounds a little loony! I’m not sure that many of my neighbors even care about the lake. My husband and I are usually the only ones sitting waterside in our Adirondack chairs watching the live show, binoculars in hand. Some of the neighbors probably think we are peeping toms trying to see into other homes, when we are innocently spying critters! We even built a boardwalk all along our property line that adjoins the lake to enjoy the evening breezes. In the past twenty-four years since we built our home, we have certainly gotten our extra $10,000 worth of property value with incredible sightings, even a Bald Eagle and an owl or two! And the only lot without a house on it sits directly across from ours, filled with lots of wax myrtles and bushes, so there is no doubt we get the best in show! But let’s get back to the green herons. As April wraps up each year, we begin to see these graceful birds flying around the lake in a circular mating dance of sorts. They collect sticks to build their nests deep into the shrubbery and vegetation. Having researched these birds I know that the incubation period is 19-21 days with both parents assisting with the incubation, producing from three to five eggs. Offspring start to climb out of their nests at 16-17 days and make their first flight at 21-23 days. Maybe it’s my imagination, but the shrill of the parents seems louder and prouder as they introduce their young to us. The mother and father come out from the foliage and perch on a branch as we wait patiently for the young ones to make their debut. It’s an amazing waltz as the little ones stretch their long yellowish legs bravely stepping out upon a limb, sometimes falling off into the water. But with a few flips of their tiny wings they are back up in a safe zone. They start out slowly hopping from branch to branch. Days later they progress, flying from limb to limb, strengthening their wings as they go, building confidence to take to the sky. And their flight is quite amazing, as they seem to be able to glide forever without flapping their wings until they approach landing.

orange beady eyes with a yellow patch leading to their pointy and daggerlike beak. Their legs are orange and they appear to have a short squatty neck but it can elongate in seconds to catch or swallow a fish. They are shiny and iridescent with a head crest that raises and lowers instantly looking like a totally different species. The juveniles are browner with thin white streaks that look like varicose veins covering their torsos. They have bright yellow eyes and just the slightest tint of green on the edge of their wings. Green Herons can stand motionless for the longest time waiting for dinner to appear as they stalk aquatic insects, frogs, worms, small rodents but mostly fish. They are rare in their dining behavior as they sometimes bait their prey by dropping feathers or a bug on top of the water hoping a fish will surface to eat the bait and in turn the Green Heron snatches the fish. Pretty cool, huh? And having spent way too much time in observation of these beautiful creatures as you can tell, it is both parents that feed their offspring by regurgitation. I look forward to this miracle on the lake every year. And I know what you are thinking. This woman needs to get a life! But really, isn’t it the “small pleasures” that bring the most joy if you’ll only slow down and take the time to cherish what’s around you? Sometimes I think I will never go on vacation again as I get such great joy everyday in my own backyard. Thankfully most of you do not know where I live or you would be reporting me to the authorities to be committed to the crazy house! But please don’t do that yet, because now that fall is here, I anxiously await the annual arrival of my fine-feathered friends, the Belted Kingfishers!

“But really, isn’t it the “small pleasures” that bring the most joy if you’ll only slow down and take the time to cherish what’s around you?”

My Friend by Erika Hoffman

y friend, my friend, I’ll give you a good price on that rug.”

“Wine.”

“I smile; I nod; I stroll past, admiring the intricately designed creation hanging on the wall. “My friend, my friend, touch it. Feel how soft.” I study it. I touch it. I nod in agreement. “My friend, my friend, see the white silk threads – the highlights in the wool. See the thick pile, my friend?” “And how much is that particular rug?” “You have a good eye, my friend. You know your Turkish rugs. Have you been to Turkey?” “Yes.” “My friend, come here. Look at this one, too. This is a tribal rug–Herake.” “Apache-looking.” I then glanced over at a densely decorated one displayed on the floor nearby. “And that?” I ask. “Persian, made by prisoners. Old rug. You like this one, my friend? I’ll give you a good price.” “Hmm.” “We can’t get Iranian rugs any more – embargo. You know why they had prisoners weave rugs?” “To keep them occupied?” “To teach them patience. My friend, let me make some calls. All these rugs must go – the last of my rugs. For you, I mark them down. Special price.” “Well, after all, I am your friend.” He smiles at that. Turks are good salesmen. They understand the power of the words “my friend.” They know how to compliment a potential buyer without coming across as unctuous. They act as if everything is negotiable. And they’re good at sizing you up. “And where were you in Turkey?” he asks. “Istanbul.” “And did you see the Basilica Hagia Sophia?” “The Blue Mosque I visited. We took off our shoes.” “And did you like Turkish coffee?” “Too strong.” “And you took a cruise, my friend?” “Docked in Kusadasi.” “And visited the Oriental carpet shops? They gave you tea?”

18

“My friend, you buy these rugs from me, and I will get you certificates of authenticity. Usually they cost $40.00 each. But for you, my friend, free.” He signals to his helpers to peel back more carpets from the stack to show them to us. It’s heavy work lifting carpets. “You like this one with a medallion that looks like Versace’s logo?” “Hmm.” “You like this one—the tree of life. Birds?” “Pretty.” “My friend, see this one without borders?” “Interesting.” “They’ll last a lifetime. You can give them to your children.” “True.” “How many you want, my friend? I give you 90% off if you buy three.” What a deal. I can purchase these works of art at a good price and make a “new friend” in the bargain. “Has anyone told you that you look a little like Jimmy Fallon?” I ask my new Turk best buddy. “Jimmy Fal… who is that?” “A late-night comedian, very funny.” “Oh, that’s me! I’m funny, too. I joke. Aren’t I funny?” he inquires of his helpers. I laugh. *** We bought the rugs, and my husband and I felt no tinge of the usual buyer’s remorse when we got them home that night. “Unique, one of a kind,” we commented as we gazed at our purchase. A week later, my phone rang. “Hello,” I said. “Hello, Miss Erika?” “Yes?” “This is your friend” “My friend? Who?” “Your friend from Turkey. Good news for you, my friend. I’ve a new shipment of rugs!”

Puppy Love by Susan L. Shone

M

y friend Blake told me he gave me my dog Magee because he was worried I was spending too much time talking to the green bell pepper plants. It is true I was talking to these four or five plants every day - and more than once a day, too. In January of that year, I lost my dad. I watched him die of cancer and had been struggling with sadness and nightmares ever since. I lived alone, and when I planted my green peppers that May, I did treat them as a sounding board of sorts. I was very lonely. Maybe Blake remembered that I adopted a puppy from an animal shelter about six months after my mother died. Maybe he figured if I had a dog to hug, it would help. Maybe he knew if he gave me a puppy, I’d have to house-train the puppy and care for her, and I couldn’t sit around feeling overwhelmed by settling my dad’s estate. I couldn’t pull the covers over my head and cry if I had to keep track of a little rascal. In August, Blake told me he’d seen an ad for free puppies, and he was going to go out and look at them the next day. When he did, only one puppy was left. She was eight weeks old and had fleas and dried mud on her nose, and Blake was smitten. He took her home, named her Magee and gave her to me after a few days. Now my days were more than sifting through the (usually incorrect) medical bills still coming in the mail and conversing with the green pepper plants. I chose a veterinarian and started house-training little Magee. I puppy-proofed the house; everything she could reach she tried to chew up. I also learned that dogs can be social bridges. After living in the same neighborhood for years, I finally met and got to know many of my neighbors. Most people want to meet the puppies they see. In my case, I encouraged it even further, as part of Magee’s

socialization. I asked everyone I saw every day on our walks if my puppy could meet them. Magee met people of all ages and races and both genders, and she learned to see every new person as a possible friend. Since Magee loves people and doesn’t fear them, I’ve never worried that she would bite somebody. Until Magee was house-trained, I kept her behind a baby gate in the kitchen. I hated hearing her whine when I walked away from her at bedtime! But it was wonderful seeing her happy face first thing in the morning. After Magee was house-trained, she had the run of the house. At first she would stretch and peek her head over the bed to look at me, and eventually she grew tall enough to get on the bed. I never discouraged her from sleeping on top of the bed. I liked having her there, I liked feeling less alone. I liked giggling at the funny sounds Magee made when she was dreaming, the little muffled yips and growls. I liked laughing on the rare occasions when Magee snored! Magee was fun to train, and smart. She learned to come, sit and shake hands in one afternoon. In another afternoon, she learned to sit up. And she learned to run to the window and bark if I said the words “stranger danger.” She was my all-in-one security system, amusement park and best friend. With Magee in the house, there are good noises. There’s the jingle of the dog tags on her collar when she shakes her head, and the happy click, click, clack of her toenails as she walks. There are the happy monkey noises she makes when she plays with her toys and the special bark she gives me when she’s after a dog biscuit or rawhide chew. And mostly there is the sound of her as she follows me everywhere I go in the house. It is everything to me not to be alone. My friend Blake must have

known that when he gave me the little puppy he loved so much that he slept on his kitchen floor with her so she wouldn’t be lonely or scared. I tell people that I likely wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for Magee. I don’t remember the demise of those green bell pepper plants. I know they probably gave me lots of beautiful, sweet peppers, and that some autumn frost must have killed them off. But like I said, I don’t remember that. Once Magee came to live with me, I had a living being to talk to every day who would listen to everything I said while looking into my eyes. At 55 pounds, my half Boxer, half Labrador is big enough to hug, and the top of her head is extremely kissable. Magee is eleven now, and on her birthday in June, she cleaned up. She got special food, special dog treats, a new toy and a vanilla birthday cake. If I could have spoiled her more, I would have. She deserves everything I can give her. She has put joy into every day I’ve lived with her these past eleven years. She’s been a role model, too. She wakes up happy every day. She lives in the moment. She forgives easily and completely. She sees everybody as a potential new friend. I tell people I want to come back as a dog in my next life, but what I really want is to be more like Magee now.

Why we Love Dogs and the People who Own Them by Leslie Moore

Drive down most any street, in most any neighborhood, and unless it’s extremely hot or cold, or raining buckets, you’re likely to see at least one person walking their dog. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than half of us own at least one dog (the number goes way up if you add in cats), and asking about the furbaby on the end of the leash is a sure way to strike up a conversation and get to know someone new. On one such street in Murrells Inlet, neighbors have become friends through a shared love of dogs. Nearly every day, this group of dog lovers gathers to walk their pups and chat. I asked the group why their dogs were so important to making their lives complete. Kileen and Steve Ludemann live with two Golden Retrievers, Gracie and Journey, and Kileen has volunteered with All4Paws, a local animal rescue organization, as a foster and dog walker. “Our dogs are loving, giving, always happy to see us, always want to be with us and give us kisses.” Kileen believes dogs benefit us in immeasurable ways. “How can we not love them? I feel so lucky to have loved so many dogs in my lifetime and hope to love many more.” When looking for a home, both Kileen and Steve wanted a place their dogs would be happy. “I felt our circle would be a great place to walk the dogs and it sure is! I know almost all the neighbors, and most of us have dogs. For a short period in my life I didn’t have a dog and felt very isolated without my walking companion. I have a shirt that says, ‘Life is a Journey Best Traveled with Dogs.’ This is so true!”

22

Another lover of Goldens, Cindy Hines and her husband Greg, share their life with 11 month old Duncan. “Duncan is always happy to see us, always wants to play, never meets a stranger and loves everyone,” Cindy told me when I asked about her love for dogs. “Our neighborhood families all feel exactly the same,” Cindy began. “Each person loves their animals as much as we love ours. When we see any of our neighbors walking their dog, we greet them and take time to have a friendly conversation.” Cindy loves her dog friendly neighborhood and the friendships that have grown because of a shared love of their four-legged companions. “Our dogs truly create a common bond between us, and it makes our community a special place.” “Our dogs are our family,” Claudia Simpson said empathically. “They make our house a home and love unconditionally.” Claudia and her

husband, Bill, have two English Bulldogs, Peaches and Frankie, as well as a German Shephard, Otis. Claudia is an active volunteer with Bullies 2 the Rescue, an animal rescue organization out of Indian Trail, North Carolina. “They handle the southeast, and we adopted Frankie there,” Cindy said. Peaches came from Long Island Bulldog Rescue in New York, and Claudia is also active with this rescue organization. “When looking for a neighborhood, dog friendly was at the top of our list,” Cindy began, as she talked about her home. “We wanted to live near people who felt the same as we did about dogs. Every time we looked at this community, a different resident was walking their dog. So it was a no brainer for us, and we knew this was our new home.” Because of their dogs, Cindy and Bill easily made lasting friends with their neighbors. “We walk our dogs often and met all of our neighbors quickly. And every time antics of everyone’s dogs. As we finished our chat, Chandler told me, a new dog family moved in, our dogs acted as the welcoming committee.” “Common interests in a community always bring the ‘home-like’ feeling you remember from your childhood. Having a community of dog owners One dog is rarely enough in this neighborhood – just ask Michael and is something we always wanted, to bring that warm lifestyle to our home.” Catherine Spann, and their son, Justin, who own three dogs. Levi and Roxy are Catahoulas and Millie is a Chocolate Lab. “It makes our house Even if you aren’t able to bring a dog into your home, there very loud and chaotic, but they are our babies. Our family wouldn’t be are lots of ways to experience their love. Our local rescues complete without them, nor could we imagine our lives without them,” said Catherine. The family is proud to support local rescues to help would love to have you come give one of their dogs the joy other companion animals find loving homes like theirs. “We donate to of a good walk. Give one a call and get out and walk a dog! All4Paws, and when we lived in Florida, we supported Nassau County Rescue.” And, please, ADOPT, don’t shop! There are so many Catherine went on to tell me how much she loves her dog-friendly home. “Our neighborhood is special because at any given time, someone is walking their dog. It creates conversations and friendships, between the dogs and us humans.” Most of us are way too busy and sometimes overwhelmed by life. Chandler Roy knows his dogs help mitigate the stress of day-to-day life. “When days are tough, coming home to a wagging tail and excited ‘puppy’ face can be priceless. Whether ill, tired or sick your dog will always put a smile on your face.” Chandler and his wife, Greer, also agree that their bond with their neighbors began with enjoying the

companion animals in our community that are just waiting to give you oodles of love – and help you make a new friend! Read It! – Nicole Says…Read These Books September is a refreshing month. Seasons change, school is in full swing and a fresh stack of books are waiting to be read. Below are three books that will surely make your top ten fall favorites!

Ribbons of Scarlet, by Kate Quinn, Stephanie Dray, Laura Kamoie, Sophie Perinot, Heather Webb, and E. Knight (To be released in October)

Ten years: Ten epic years in Paris, during one of the most tumultuous times in history. This is the set-up of Ribbons of Scarlet – seven women of various backgrounds, fighting for women’s rights, in the midst of the male dominated kingdom. Each author provides one woman’s powerful perspective, while each section connects into one remarkable tale. Readers will want to make sure they read the authors’ notes in the back, and maybe even conduct their own research on these REAL women. I wanted to include this exciting book in the September issue of Sasee, because two of these incredible authors will be at the October 4th Moveable Feast! I have read several of these authors before, many of whom are already on my list of favorite historical fiction writers. Only two were new to me, but I have added their other works to my wish list. There seems to be a new trend of authors teaming up to write poignant novels, as well as a motion to bring more stories of strong women to the forefront. This book is a remarkable example of both. I did not know a lot about the French Revolution before, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and have been looking for others set in the same time period. This novel was made for historical fiction fans!

The Last Book Party, by Karen Dukess It is 1987, and Eve Rosen has been offered a job as an assistant to a powerful author. She jumps at the chance, hoping it will be a boost to her career. However, she soon discovers that secrets and romance are a tricky Cape Cod business. Will she be able to remain true to herself, or will she get wrapped up in the whimsical times? This is an easy-to-read novel of a young woman trying to find her way in a dream career. The Last Book Party is a debut novel by Karen Dukess, who easily transports readers to the Cape Cod setting. The eccentric characters suit the storyline perfectly, making it a very believable tale. Ah, this is the perfect book to take to the beach for that last weekend of hot summer rays. I easily read this book in one day and I am sure other readers will do the same. First, it is a book set in the midst of the literary world. Second, there is romance and a bit of intrigue. Third, it draws you back into the ‘80s, before the internet and social media ruled the world. Dreams and ambitions versus mentoring and bitterness are at the heart of this coming-of-age novel.

Because You’re Mine, by Rea Frey Lee is the mother of an autistic boy, who knows the power of routines. However, her best friend, Grace, makes her realize that she needs an adult-only weekend. Therefore, Lee begrudgingly entrusts her son’s care to his tutor, Noah. When the weekend is over, someone is dead and everyone has a million little secrets. Who survives the weekend? Who has the one secret that could destroy them all? Psychological thrillers are known for fast-paced tales with unreliable narrators, and this book provides both. Women’s literature is meant to tug at the heartstrings, which this story does, as well. Readers may get whiplash as they try to keep up with this wild ride! Told from three points-of-view and various time periods, this book will keep everyone on their toes. Half the fun comes from trying to figure out which of the narrators, readers should trust. Fans of Shari Lapena and Liane Moriarty, will want to add Rea Frey to their must-read list. As you may know, I love a good psychological thriller. I had not read Rea Frey’s other books, so I was unfamiliar with her style. However, after reading the synopsis and seeing quotes referencing some of my favorite authors, I was excited to read this story. This book is definitely one you will want to read with a friend, so you can discuss all the gritty details together. There are twists and turns that even the brightest reading detective will have a hard time predicting. This is a fast-paced, intense read.

Our Sasee Kids are Making a Difference by Leslie Moore

When someone else’s happiness is your happiness. That is love. -Lana Del Ray A quick Google search of children interacting with the elderly immediately yields a bevy of information on the health benefits for both the children and our older population. In some parts of the United States, daycare centers are being operated inside assisted living facilities – with great success. Locally, Sasee found our kids are also making a difference through frequent interaction with our elder population. Our kids know helping others is important. Sasee asked around and found a few of the ways local kids and seniors make the perfect combination. Shirley Klee from Brightwater Senior Living had a lot to say about how groups of local kids are helping seniors at this Myrtle Beach facility. • Local junior and high school students come in to perform music programs – and they hang out afterward to get to know the audience. • Local Girl Scout troops come in and spend time with residents and share stories. • A music school brings their students twice a year to do a recital and share their progress.

• Brightwater members love when preschool classes come in to sing and do a craft activity. • Several local parents regularly bring their children to the facility for a variety of activities and interaction. Senior Living Communities, owner of Brightwater Senior Living and the Lakes at Litchfield are convinced of the benefits of bringing youth and seniors together. Recently, the company won a national award for their J.O.Y. program ( Joining Older and Younger). They encourage intergenerational communication and what this actually means is a lot of fun for young and old. Bethea Retirement Community is Darlington has a group of girls they sponsor as a part of their partnership with Connie Maxwell Children’s Home. The residents contribute household items each month and the girls come to do activities with the seniors. These children love visiting Bethea!

Kids and seniors have a lot to offer each other. To get your kids involved, call the assisted living or retirement community closest to you and go for a visit!

Take Care of the Luxuries . . . by Kim Delmar Cory

E

nvision a lovely young couple dressed-to-the-nines, the young woman wearing a floor-skimming off-the-shoulder white dress, her hair elegantly coiffed, the young man boasting a tailored black Armani suit and a thousand dollar haircut. Their hands, necks and arms glitter with newly purchased baubles that likely cost three years’ worth of my salary. What if this fetching duo work minimum wage food service jobs, live in a low rent district one bedroom apartment, and used every penny of their recent lottery winnings to purchase the clothes, hair styles and baubles described? So what if they did? By today’s social mores, they would likely be considered selfcentered, self-serving and self-indulgent. Shouldn’t this young couple have donated a significant portion of their lottery winnings to children’s charities or disease research or to underwrite a new archeological dig to discover the real “truth” of what happened to Amelia Earhart? At the very least started a sensible 401k fund towards their retirement from Wendy’s? I hate that word “sensible.” It lacks nuance or shimmer or joy. “Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves,” said Dorothy Parker. Granted, famed 1920s writer Parker, was a blacklisted, suicidal, thrice-married, alcoholic, but who’s to say she didn’t have a grand time of it?

should occur with far reaching vision and limited funds. How to transform the mundane into the extraordinary, like wrapping twinkle lights around a trash can. Allow me. Let’s say my sister needs a dead tree in her yard cut down. She budgets for the tree removal dude to come out and…squirrel… look at those marvelous one-of-a-kind Christmas-themed pillows with sparkling reindeer sporting a smoking jacket and a pipe. And that hand-dyed wool carpet that perfectly complements her decor. Which she realizes as she happily floats out of Target carrying her non-bargain basement purchases, leaves approximately $6.83 cents in the dead tree removal budget. Seriously, which would you rather look at day in and day out for pure esthetic enjoyment? Which will make you smile and your heart glow while keeping your feet toasty and your floor clean? A gray dead tree stump or sassy sparkly pillows and a warm rug? Take care of the luxuries and the necessities will take care of themselves. True to Dorothy’s words, within a week a thunderstorm wind blew the dead tree down, a neighbor came by with a mega-sized power saw and cut the now horizontal tree into fireplace logs. Voila! The necessities took care of themselves.

My sister and I adhere to Parker’s adage on a more economical and reasonable level than does this lottery lucky twosome.

Let’s hear it for the unrepentant choice of opulence over humdrum. Lavish instead of mundane. I applaud the demise of sensible. Let’s rally for daily joy!

We are “everywoman;” unremarkable and commonplace in our daily lives. Yet we consider Dorothy an oracle of what can and

We’re not suggesting not to donate to the needy. Share with others. To buy everything that sparkles or smells divine.

We are simply following Dorothy’s sage advice. Even a luxury as simple as obtaining a pair of strappy sandals you’ve coveted, but don’t think you should purchase, as you don’t have an outfit to go with them.

OK... it’s simple.

Yet. Really? If you were to buy these sandals, wouldn’t life go on? You would eat, breathe, work and play as usual. You would purchase food and pay utilities. The necessities would take care of themselves. And you would have these awesome sandals that made you smile every time you looked down at your stunningly shod feet. Likely you have an old pair of sad “sensible” sandals in your closet that you have been wearing year after year “because you had them.” Yes, they go with everything because they are sad and sensible. Get over it. Chuck them. Doesn’t that feel better? Luxury requires living in the moment and a tad of risk taking. Whimsy. Decadence. Like a perfume that enchants and captivates with its breathtaking fragrance long after the wearer has left the room – a pair of sassy sandals or sparkly pillows. Perhaps even that twinkle-light-swathed garbage can. Luxury is not attaining that which is not needed; it is attaining that which is heartwarming, cherished and memorable. That which brings us everyday joy. Rock on.

Kim Delmar Cory

Tailgating Fun -

with Chef Tom Mullally of Strand Catering by Leslie Moore

“I enjoy tailgating,” Chef Tom Mullally said as we began our conversation. “Good food, good wine, good friends – it’s a unique way to celebrate and root for your favorite team.” I asked Chef Tom for some fun new recipes that we could all try for our next tailgating party – or just a day at home with friends watching the game. Chef Tom has come up with a few recipes that are not only delicious, but easy to prepare. “Everyone loves salted caramel, it’s so popular.” He continued, saying, “It doesn’t have to be complicated or upscale, it just has to be tasty; a few extra granules of sea salt and black pepper can bring it up from the okay factor to the wow factor.” This hugely popular chef is originally from Boston, but has lived in the Myrtle Beach area for 25 years. He is a chef/instructor at the International Culinary Institute of Myrtle Beach, a part of Horry Georgetown Technical College, has a private catering business as well as providing private cooking classes!” “I don’t want to intimidate people,” Chef Tom said about his recipes. “These are practical ideas that you’ll want to try. And remember, There is No Defeat, there is Only Defeat in No Longer Trying.” “Cook and Eat Well my Friends!” Bon Appetite! Enjoy this unique tailgating idea.

It’s time to plan your holiday parties – call Strand Catering at 843-446-2256 or email Chef Tom at cheftom@strand-catering.com. You may also book Chef Tom for private cooking lessons in your home.
