letter from the editor Through next spring, my son is living and working in France, in a small town about a four hour train ride south of Paris. Aside from recent events, which have not affected his village, he is happy teaching English to high school students and exploring a new corner of the world. As a small boy, my son would write the French words for household items on note cards and use masking tape to attach them to everything we owned – going to France has been a lifelong dream. Happiness has not come easily to my son, growing up he was often melancholy and frustrated, but with a lot of love and attention from two devoted parents, plus an older sister who adored him, he thrived until, at 10 years old, his father, my husband, died suddenly. Our lives slid in a downward spiral for years. Serious depression and hopelessness nearly took his life. But, miraculously, in college, my troubled son turned his life around, rekindled his dream and graduated with honors. He began seeing himself reflected in the eyes of others in a positive light and blossomed into who he really is -- a kind, gentle and intelligent young man. I still have one of those note cards on my ceiling, dirty and dog-eared, to remind myself that miracles do happen, and while I will miss him being home this Christmas, every time I stand in my kitchen and look up, I give thanks for answered prayers and miracles. May your “Season of Miracles” be blessed and filled with love. All of the Sasee crew are grateful for your support throughout the year – you, dear reader, are why we are here. We have some fun and exciting new features planned for 2016 – please let us know what you think! Peace,

RE: “A Grateful Heart,” by Rose Ann Sinay I identified. We have four grown kids and a couple of years ago none came home for Thanksgiving. We went out and ate alone. Suddenly I remembered Thanksgivings decades ago before the kids, and I recalled how much I liked being with my husband, and it all was okay. Thanks for rekindling those memories and for writing in such a readable way! -Erika RE: “DIY or HAP?” by Ann Ipock Ann, this story was relatable, as I also have attempted many DIY projects that ended up in the can or dumpster. You certainly put forth the effort. Now you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of the handyman’s labor. Fun story. -Linda

Cover Artist Jacqui Faye She Wore Red, by Jacqui Faye Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1956, Jacqui Faye works predominantly in acrylics, focusing on figurative works. Recognized for her “Red Shoe” series, Jacqui paints playful, innocent and sometimes provocative compositions using the red shoes to tell the story. Anonymity of her subjects plays an influential role in establishing a strong connection with her audience. Currently residing in San Antonio, Jacqui’s works can be found in private collections across the U.S., as well as England, Scotland, Wales, and Canada. Past exhibits include The Benini Gallery and Sculpture Ranch, Johnson City, Texas, and Chabot Fine Art Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island. Rooted in realism, the artist challenges herself to depict true-to-life details in her work. She is fascinated with varying shades of color, most notably red, and the way shadow and light play upon patterns. Jacqui’s longstanding sequence, “The Red Shoe” series, springs from a culmination of visual impressions from the artist’s imagination and life experiences. She is influenced by the nonconformist, the bohemian, that one in a million who walks to a different beat. The red shoes are iconic representations of excitement, passion… rebellion. Christmas Every Day By Penelope Foran

Christmas: A time to gaze out the window to watch a gently falling snow in the light of a street lamp. A time of amazement and wonder, a season of miracles. Christmas 2009: My husband Vic and I had just received our Christmas miracle. Vic had been accepted into a clinical trial for a new drug to fight metastatic prostate cancer. We had no illusions for a cure, but believed that it was entirely reasonable to expect an extra year or two. What a gift we had received. For a few short weeks after the trial began, we were positive that Vic had not received the placebo, but the real thing, the miracle drug. Vic’s PSA dropped dramatically. All of his issues with ambulation, dragging feet and poor balance, improved. He summarily ditched his walker. Best of all, the unrelenting pain of bone mets disappeared. It was a miracle! Unfortunately, Vic’s condition suddenly deteriorated, seemingly overnight. By mid-February, my dear husband was paralyzed from the mid-chest down. One of his spinal tumors had compressed his spinal cord, causing immediate and irreversible paralysis. The only upside was that he never experienced pain again, as he had no sensation. We had decided early on that, if at all possible, we would keep him here at home until the end. Although his paralysis and 6’4” inch frame made it quite a challenge, somehow we managed. My dear friend Timi flew down from Pennsylvania, unbidden, and spent a week doing everything and anything we needed. Too full of self-pity and sadness, I never recognized the miracles right in front of me, Vic’s release from all pain, and the gift of a friend who would drop everything to head to South Carolina for anything but a vacation. By mid-April, the cancer had sneaked its way into Vic’s brain stem. He was still breathing, heart beating, but he seemed unable to communicate in any meaningful way. I tramped around the house, often ranting and

raging at God. If You can’t allow Vic to be Vic, then why not take him home, and right now?! What’s your point, God? I assume You have one, right? After two days, Vic remained totally unresponsive. Suddenly, unbelievably, I saw him crook his finger almost imperceptibly. I rushed over; sure it had been my imagination. But it hadn’t. Vic motioned for me to put my ear to his mouth. “I’m going to have a really great day today,” he whispered, almost inaudibly. Suddenly, it all came clear. This was my miracle. God had had a plan all along. God had made a way for me to experience the exact moment my husband’s soul departed for Heaven. There was no doubt in my mind. I was bathed in peace and comfort. In the months that followed, I began to look at life in a whole new way. At first, it felt awkward and a wee bit like Pollyanna, but, eventually I embraced my new outlook with enthusiasm and wonder. I discovered that my life is a season of miracles. There is always another one right around the corner. Sometimes, they are small, simple. Like the evening I listened to a little voice telling me to drop over to see my granddaughters, after a stressful day. As I brushed their thick, glossy hair, inhaling the scent of their shampoo, all my troubles seemed to disappear. Sometimes they are huge. Like finding my new husband steps away from where we had sprinkled Vic’s ashes. And, believe me; it takes a miracle to find a man brave enough to marry a widow. It takes the patience of a saint and the strength of Samson to help with all the baggage of a fifty-something life. No falling snow in the street lamps of Pawleys, but a season of miracles. Indeed. I just can’t wait to see what’s next.

Joanne Huist Smith’s husband passed away a few months before December. Depressed and unable to participate in the annual Christmas cheer, the youngest of her three children worries that there won’t be a Christmas this year. One night, a mysterious package arrives on the doorstep; an anonymous gift signed “True Friends.” Each night, a small present arrives, in tune with the classic song, “Twelve Days of Christmas.” The blessing she receives from her mysterious friends allows her to come to terms with the Christmas spirit, not only accepting happiness, but also looking forward to the excitement of this holiday. I was not anxious to start this book, although part of me thought it would be an ideal book for me, the other half screamed I wasn’t ready. Then, as I started reading the first few chapters, there was more loss in my life, creating an even larger crater in my heart. Through all of my life’s events over the past sixteen months, I could relate to the author’s desire to stay in bed and shun the happiness in the

world. It isn’t a desire to hide from loved ones, but more a need to hide from the cheeriness of the universe. There were two powerful quotes in this book that I copied into my journal for me to hang onto and remember. I will be smiling for a while as I look back and remember this uplifting read for future good deeds. I could have read it in one day, but I purposely dragged it out for an entire week. Kind of like the gift givers choosing the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” I knew it would take time to absorb the words and value in each lesson. Each day, I read only a chapter or two, because I didn’t want it to end. This is the kind of heartwarming book that helps restore readers faith in humanity.

My Top Three Bedtime Activities by Janey Womeldorf

I love going to bed. It is, hands down, my all-time favorite winter activity, especially at the end of long, bone-chilling, exhausting day -- or even a relaxing one for that matter. When it’s been dark since 6 pm, ice outside is taking hold, and your bedroom is that perfect, you-can-almost-see-your-breath temperature for sleeping, nothing beats snuggling into and under the covers. Admittedly, the sound of snow crunching under my boots; our neighborhood Christmas-light drive, and steaming bowls of hearty soups also rank high on my list, but going to bed happens every single night -- joyful. Although it never disappoints, there are three things that can elevate my nightly experience from exciting to pure bliss:

When my husband and I first married, there was no science to sheets. Sheets came in one style – cotton -- and linen closets were tidy. We slept sound, ignorant and happy for eight, dreamy years until we moved from Florida to Michigan. We lived on the shores of Lake Michigan in a rental with radiator heating, thin walls and single-pane windows. At night, our cotton sheets made our skin shudder, and we ended up climbing into bed with our sweats on to help take out their chilling sting. If we wanted to read, we’d sit in bed with our heavy robes on back to front (the pre-snuggie), and then the next morning, we’d put our clothes back under the covers to warm them before bracing ourselves to get up.

1. A Good Book Once a good book gets its claws in me, I am powerless. Impatient anticipation gnaws at me throughout the day, and by the time bedtime arrives I’m chomping at the bit to get between the sheets to find out what happens next. Nothing tops letting my hectic brain melt into the book’s twists and turns, while being serenaded by the soothing light of a bedside lamp. It is the perfect wind down. It relaxes my brain, nourishes my body and is the ultimate stress buster. It is also dangerous. That 5:30 am alarm doesn’t care that the plot just took an unbelievable twist, and neither do the next day’s customers. Despite this, I have spent many a work night reading into the small hours, chiding myself as I painstakingly succumb to yet another chapter. A riveting read is one of the last bastions of legal fun, and it’s what bedtimes are made for.

Cotton was no longer our friend; it was time for flannel. We invested in a wintry, flannel set adorned with moose and pine trees -- it seemed fitting. Our flannel sheets turned out to be a godsend in the winter, baking in the summer, and because we were too tight to buy more than one pair, nubby and uncomfortable from all the washing. We got rid of them.

2. Clean, Crisp Sheets Oprah Winfrey once confessed that she so loved getting into bed when the sheets are clean that she has them changed every other day. If I could afford a permanent housekeeper, I’d do the same. Actually, I’m lying: I’d have them changed every day. Sheets make all the difference.

12

Next up were the trendy, stretch, t-shirt sheets. These seemed a good compromise between the warmth of flannel and crispness of cotton, but they got so baggy after constant washing that they no longer fit taut on the bed. I could feel every wrinkly crease, so we got rid of those too. Fortunately we moved south around the time that high thread-count cotton became the new must have; so we did have. We started at 300 count, then 400, then 500. We stopped at 500 because my face slid off the pillowcase at nights, so we started working backwards. Just when we thought, we had cracked it at 300, we bought a new mattress with the fancy, padded bit on top, and despite the fact that sheets bulged from our overburdened linen closet, not

a single one fit. We had more sheets on our shelves than Bed, Bath & Beyond, and I was loath to buy more. We tried sheet grabbers to hold our ill-fitting sheets in place but one corner inevitably popped off in the middle of the night, and we would wake up wrapped in floundering linen. It was all getting too stressful so we gave up, bought the correct size, but returned to our roots: We went back to good old-fashioned, simple cotton. Nothing beats their feel -- especially when they’re clean. 3. The Perfect Bedroom Gift They say the ideal present is when you receive something you didn’t know you needed, but now can’t live without it. If you don’t own a heated mattress pad, put this magazine down right now, grab that blue and white, 20% off coupon, and run out and buy yourself one for Christmas. If you share a bed, splurge on dual-control so each of you can regulate the temperature on your side of the bed. You’re buying for the long haul, and your opposite body temperatures will thank you.

Annual Centerpiece Sale Up to 50% Off

In Stock Crystal and Dining Lights

It took us twenty years to crack the perfect sleeping code, but this cotton/heated mattress-pad combo is for keeps. We live and sleep in Florida now but, fortunately, most southerners consider winter to be any time the temperature gets below 60 degrees, so our dual-control, heated pad gets well used. On a wintry, frigid (it’s all relative) Florida night, climbing into crisp, cool cotton sheets, gently warmed by the welcome heat underneath, is nothing short of nighttime nirvana. When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to stay up. Now that I’m older, I can’t wait to go to bed. If age brings wisdom, then I for one am thankful for the wisdom to appreciate the simple pleasures in life -- like climbing into a welcoming, cozy bed on a dark, wintry night. It is my nightly reward, and nothing beats it. Especially when there’s a good book, clean sheets and a warm mattress involved. 926 Frontage Road East just north of The Sun News 843-448-4364 • www.ButlersElectric.com

Winter Miracle: Patty Jones Centro Shoes

What about you would surprise people? I am a mom of two children, ages 15 and 11, and I am of Italian descent, both of my parents are from Italy. But, both children have blond hair and blue eyes, and people are shocked that they are mine – they look exactly like their dad! Between taking care of the kids, working full time and caring for our cat and dog, it surprises me sometimes that I am able to get it all done! In this “Season of Miracles,” please tell us about a personal miracle in your life. I am originally from upstate New York and very skilled at driving in the snow. But, one Christmas Eve I was driving alone and hit black ice. When you hit ice like this, there is not much you can do – braking actually makes it worse. I spun around and around and ended up on the other side of the highway, facing in the wrong direction. Miraculously, I was not hurt and no other cars were involved. I know an angel was watching over me and kept me safe that evening. If you celebrate Christmas, who puts up the tree? My husband puts up the tree, and we all decorate together. Through the years, the children have collected their own special ornaments with their names on them that they like to put on the tree. When it’s all decorated the cat usually tries to jump in the tree and tear it down!

What is your favorite holiday activity? Most definitely Nights of a Thousand Candles in Brookgreen Gardens. We always go as a family and it’s a magical time. Best Santa Ever By Diane DeVaughn Stokes

It was a bitter, cold snowstorm that hit New Jersey, one day before Christmas, producing five feet of snow and bringing the whole town to its knees. It was not quite Norman Rockwell-ish but nevertheless a winter wonderland of white. I was ten years old and hoping for a Magnus Chord organ under the tree. Of course, by this time, I knew that the real Santa Claus existed in the hearts and wallet of my parents, so I was not surprised when my mom told me that the organ, which was on lay-away at Sears five miles away, was not going to make it to the house in time for Christmas, since my dad could not drive in this terrible storm which was slowly mixing with ice. I wasn’t upset and certainly understood the situation as I eagerly watched my dad cut off the bottom of the beautiful Frasier Fir, standing it up and forcing it into the tree stand. Once it was up and secure, he dressed for work and walked to Union Carbide as he always did since it was only two blocks away. Meanwhile, Mom put on her old blue jeans and red plaid shirt as she prepared to awaken her creativity. Spread out all over the floor were gorgeous glass colored balls, sparkling lights in the shape of little candles, silver stands of tinsel and angel hair that all gradually made it to the tree. Mom constantly reminded me to place one strand of tinsel at a time to make it look like real icicles. It was tedious, but always worth the effort. Then out came the manger scene, the same one Mom uses beneath the tree to this day. We always kissed the little baby Jesus as we laid him in His bed of straw. And still do. Mary and Joseph were beside Him, and all the other figurines were facing the Christ Child in complete adoration. Even the sheep and cows were placed strategically among the wise men and three kings. The pageantry of it all was so beautiful. Then, just like in “Twas the Night before Christmas,” the stockings were hung by the chimney with care, and our two-bedroom apartment was whimsically transformed. Mom and I bundled up in our long under

16

and outerwear and walked to my grandparent’s apartment four blocks away to help prepare desserts for the next day. Dad joined us later when he got home from work, and we all ate my grandmother’s chili, perfect for a snowy Christmas Eve. Then we trudged home amid what had become a treacherous ice storm. I remember lying in bed Christmas morning hearing icicles break off the nearby rooftops, and the early morning traffic crushing through the icy road. I was in no hurry to get up since the one thing I wanted most would not arrive till the storm was over, and the snow was gone. Then I heard my mom shout out from the living room, “Get up, Santa Claus came last night!” With a slight giggle I put on my robe and slippers and scurried towards the tree. There, in its entire splendor, was a beautiful Magnus Chord Organ. I was elated and shocked because I knew Dad could never have gotten his car to Sears in this ice storm. It was then that my mom told me that Dad worked only a half day on Christmas Eve, and walked five miles to Sears and back pulling the organ on my sled. Just so I would have it on Christmas morning. And now the best part of this story… My mom had only been married to Dad for a year and a half at this time. I knew he loved her but was never sure he really loved me. I felt that I was just tagging along in this relationship, and that Dad had to accept this package deal, until now. This man, my new dad, really did love me. He braved the storm to make my Christmas magical, even more magical than the Santa of my younger years ever did.

Home Run Miracle7

grand strand miracle leagues by Leslie Moore

During this “Season of Miracles,” Sasee found a ball field and playground, on 33rd Avenue North in Myrtle Beach, where small miracles happen on a daily basis. This magical place is the home of the Grand Strand Miracle Leagues, where lives are changed and enriched through the joy of play. Jennifer Averette, Executive Director of the Grand Strand Miracle Leagues, says “You have probably heard of the classic 1947 holiday movie, Miracle on 34th Street. Here at the Miracle Leagues, we celebrate our own “Miracle on 33rd Avenue.” Why? Because when a child with special needs hits the ball on our field; when they hear the cheers of the crowd and cross home plate, it is a miracle. We see miracles happen on our field during every game, and we see it in the faces of our players with special needs. Imagine not being able to play a sport...neither can we. Everyone deserves the chance to play.” The Grand Strand Miracle Leagues is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit which provides organized team sports for mentally and physically handicapped children and adults. The facility is adapted for wheelchairs and walkers and is equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms. The location

18

of the field behind Pepper Geddings Recreation Center enables Miracle Leagues players to come out to play just like their peers, in a safe, encouraging environment. Currently the nonprofit is offering Miracle League Baseball; Miracle League Soccer; and in 2015, a brand new sport, golf, partnering with the First Tee of the Grand Strand. These sports are complimented by a variety of fun and fitness activities at the all-access playground, “All Star Park” which is open to the special needs public at any time upon request. Currently players range in age from 4-42! Founded 13 years ago by local businessman Dr. Paul Booth of The Booth Company, Inc., the Grand Strand Miracle Leagues’ field is fashioned after the first such league developed in Conyers, Georgia. It features an all-weather track-type surface that makes it easy for wheelchairs to circle the bases. Dr. Booth saw a sports TV special with Bryant Gumbel called “Real Sports” and felt Myrtle Beach had to have one. Dr. Booth initiated the

s

project, brought other local business people like Raymond Schild and Carson Benton and his family on board, and put the needed resources behind the effort. Mr. Benton helped raise the $125,000 to build the special surface, and the first games were played in spring of 2002 at this field of dreams named for his father, the James C. Benton Miracle League Field. “We were the 2nd Miracle League in the nation. Now, there are over 275 Miracle League’s across the world,” Jennifer said with pride. “We currently serve 135 individuals in our Saturday baseball league program; over 300 Special Needs students in our School Day program; and 60 children in our soccer program and 25 in golf. We maintain strong ties with the Autistic community -- offering SOS the use of our facility for their summer programs; and also with the Grand Strand Down Syndrome Society. We continue to reach out to group homes for mentally disabled adults to offer our programs to their participants. Finally, we remain committed to cooperation with Special Olympics by sending our Mariners Team of athletes to the Summer Games to compete in softball.” Jennifer added that the parents are the real heroes and shared a wonderful story from a Miracle League mom. “Miracle League has given my son a sense that he CAN belong to a group and not be picked on or ridiculed. He had always wanted to play a sport (baseball especially); but was always told there was no room on the team for him or he was made fun of. Miracle League has given him the opportunity to do something he loves to do and feel like he fits in.”

The Grand Strand Miracle Leagues are funded through grants, fundraisers and individual donors. Players from Horry and Georgetown Counties pay nothing to play and are given uniforms, equipment, trophies and even hot meals on game days. Hundreds of volunteers help make dreams come true, including players from CCU men’s baseball, women’s softball and the soccer teams. GSML also has two resident celebrities that volunteer regularly, Reggie Sanders, former MLB player and Andre Davis, former NFL player. They bring in sports celebrities once a year for a special game, and raise money for the nonprofit from their Celebrity Golf Tournament. Jennifer said any interested players can visit the website and click on “Play” to sign up. The next spring season will begin in March. “Players of any age and ability are welcome. We are always looking for new players.” Executive Director since August of 2014, Jennifer feels her work with Grand Strand Miracles Leagues is a special blessing in her life as well. “It has been a humbling and heartwarming experience.”

Sasee readers who would like to help can do so through a tax deductible donation, by volunteering to “buddy” a player or by providing a meal on game days. Visit grandstrandmiracleleague.com or call Jennifer at 843-448-7712 for more information. Donations may be mailed to: GSML, PO Box 7503, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.

Good Deed Goods What would surprise people about you? You won’t believe this – I know all the words to “The Streak,” by Ray Stevens! I love listening to my old record collection, mostly ‘70s music. In this “Season of Miracles,” please tell us about a personal miracle in your life. When Willie and I decided to start a family, it was very hard for me to carry a baby to term. After two miscarriages the doctor told me if I had another it would be almost impossible to have a full term pregnancy. We prayed for answers, and we were prayed over by our church family. Right after that, the doctor decided to run tests to see if they could figure out what was going on, and they couldn’t find anything wrong! A few months later, I became pregnant – and now I have four beautiful children. If you celebrate Christmas, who puts up the tree? We try to do it as a family, but it’s getting harder now that the children are growing up. I wish I could tell you it was a perfect Norman Rockwell-type gathering, but it’s usually chaotic and crazy – the picture in my head never matches reality! We put up two trees – one has all the kids’ ornaments and multicolored lights, and the other has white lights and the rest of our huge ornament collection. What is your favorite holiday activity? On Christmas Eve, we attend services at our church, and friends and family come over to visit. But, after everyone is gone, I read The Cajun Night Before Christmas and use my best Cajun accent! Then, I read The Christmas Story from the Bible. It’s our special tradition. Tell us about the mission of Good Deed Goods. What do you enjoy most about your work? I was at the Atlanta market, buying for the store, and at the same time Willie and my sons were in Guatemala building a house for a family in great need. I looked around at the market and saw such an abundance of goods -- they have everything, while so many have so little -- and I thought there must be a way to give back through my work. While this epiphany took over three years to become a reality, this October we finally launched Good Deed Goods in our store. The concept behind it is with every gift purchase we pledge to donate 10% to local, national, and international charities that make an eternal difference in people’s lives. I love knowing we are partnering with our customers to help make this world a better place. It’s only a little, but if we all do a little we could change the world. I do all the buying for the store – I think we have wonderful merchandise. And I love being a part of Lee’s Inlet Apothecary. I grew up in a pharmacy; my father had Southside Pharmacy in Myrtle Beach. This month, Good Deed Goods of the Apothecary is trying to do their part to help our local flood victims by hosting a Flood Relief Christmas Concert featuring Beth Moore’s praise and worship leader, Travis Cottrell. It will be held on December 11, at 7 pm in the Garden City Chapel. All proceeds go to those affected locally by the October floods. We hope everyone will come and pay the $20 donation to hear a great concert and help our neighbors.

Notes for Newcomers: Who’s Teaching Who? by Phil LaBorie

“Give back what you’ve learned, Share your experience.” 365 TAO, Daily Mediations* I try to read a passage from the Tao Te Ching every morning. I find that it’s a wonderful way to get myself grounded and start my day off on the right foot. And now that I’m substitute teaching here in Horry County, I find that my daily readings and mediations are more fulfilling than ever.

Wow! That put an end to my superior attitude in a hurry. Then, in my need to be universally liked, I tried to befriend students, rather than just be friendly with them. To my betterment as a teacher, I’ve discovered that there is a big difference between being blindly supportive of a misbehaving student, like a close friend might do, and becoming a thoughtful advocate when a student has made a good decision and a milder version of Judge Dread when a student has made a bad one.

How? Why? What gives me the chutzpah to even say so? For starters, as a substitute teacher in Connecticut years ago and a volunteer working on several art projects with inner-city kids in that state, I figured I had some fairly serious grounding in teaching and dealing with young and somewhat rebellious students. So, when I first moved to the Grand Strand, I thought I could most probably walk on water in the South Carolina educational program. Not so. Did I ever have mucho lessons to learn! In point of fact, I’ve come to understand that the more l learn about teaching students, the more I realize that I really have a whole lot to learn about myself. For instance, the ancient Taoist teachers and mediation masters often kept important knowledge to themselves in order to maintain their superiority over their students. In hindsight, it’s easy to say, “How foolish was that?” But truthfully, I think that was what I did initially. I certainly felt superior. After all, I was from north of the Mason-Dixon Line, right? Being a Connecticut Yankee and all, I obviously knew more about learning, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness than southern kids did. That silly behavior came to an abrupt end one day when a 3rd Grader said to me, “Mr. Phil (I use that name in the classroom because trying to correctly pronounce my last name often leads to confusion), I’m not being disrespectful, and please don’t tell my teacher, but sometimes, you sound like a know-it-all.”

24

All of which means listening carefully to what students have to say, not rushing to judgment, rewarding good behavior and sticking to your guns about disciplinary action when a student misbehaves. Common sense, right? But then, I was always a slow learner. Now when it comes to being totally and unabashedly appreciated, I have to admit that when a youngster from a class where I’ve appeared in the past rushes up to me and says, “Hi, Mr. Phil,” I’m very flattered and delighted. And, it’s even better, when a student has an “Ah-Ha moment!” I’m just thrilled. Here’s what happened: A 4th Grader in one of my classes was struggling with a math problem and came to me for help. I looked at the problem he was dealing with and realized that I hadn’t a clue about how to solve it. I was always terrible at math, and my learning disability now came home to roost in spades. Now what? I decided that rather than just throw up my hands and tell the student to ask one of his classmates for help, I reluctantly said, “Let’s have a look at this together and see what we can learn.” We discussed what the problem was asking us to solve and after what seemed like ages of attempting to roll Sisyphus’s Rock uphill, my soon-to-be the next Einstein blurted out, “Oh, I see what to do!”

“OK, what’s the next step?” I asked. I can’t say that a light bulb appeared over his head at that moment, but sure enough, he had figured out the solution and continued with the problemsolving. I was still sitting in semi-darkness.

CAROLINA CAR CARE For All Your Automotive Repair & Maintenance Needs

As the year progresses, I’m finding out, often to my embarrassment on an almost daily basis, that there’s a whole lot more to learn about substitute teaching. I’ve become an avid student. Case in point: After one of my classes had pledged allegiance to the flag, I asked them if anyone knew why we placed our right hand over our heart when we recited the pledge and where the custom originated. The class was all ears. BTW: In case you didn’t know, or may have forgotten, the custom dates back to ancient times. Since swords were mainly held in the right hand, placing that hand over your heart demonstrated that you were empty-handed and loyal to your liege. On the other hand, when I proudly told a class that I had taught my Italian grandmother to read English (she became a big fan of my 5th Grade “Days and Deeds” reader), my heart-felt recitation fell on deaf ears. Lesson learned: Be relevant to what students are interested in and what they can relate to. My Italian grandmother, while a wonderful person, bless her heart, was just not of interest to my students. Now, if I’d enquired about what their grandmothers had taught them, we might have had an interesting dialogue. Finally, I came across a small sign describing a day in a classroom that read: …And your mind is packed with memories of kids who changed your life. So true. I’m learning a lot from my students; hopefully they’re learning a little something from me.

Merry Christmas And Happy New Year From Our Family To Yours.

In that regard, I now try to use another Taoist passage in my daily dealings with students, administrators and everyone else whose path I cross. The great Tao flows everywhere, It fulfills its purpose silently and makes no claim. It does not show greatness, And is therefore truly great. Amen to that. * Deng Ming-Dao, HarperCollins, New York, (c) 1992

Sweet Memories By Donna Volkenannt

Sometimes, when I peel an orange or taste peppermint, my mind flashes back to Christmas stockings filled with tangerines and shepherd’s hook candy canes. The scent of cinnamon and vanilla transports me back to my mom’s kitchen on winter mornings, where my brothers and sisters and I ate Mom’s raisin and rice pudding, hot out of the oven. While most special scents evoke memories of happy times, one unique fragrance has helped me cope with the heartbreak of losing my daughter, Julie. Julie and her husband Mike died in an accident in 2005, making orphans of their children, ten-year-old Cari and six-year-old Michael. Grief-stricken, but determined to surround our grandchildren with love, my husband Walt and I became their legal guardians and welcomed them, along with their clothing, toys, furniture and dog, into our home. Emptying out my daughter’s house brought on a new wave of sadness. I fought back tears as I tried to decide what to keep, what to toss and what to donate to charity. My mood lifted when I found a bottle of designer cologne on top of Julie’s bedroom dresser. Holding the cut-glass decanter triggered an image of her excitement when she opened the gift Christmas morning. I removed the bottle’s silver top, pressed the sprayer, closed my eyes and slowly inhaled. Just like Julie, the floral perfume was sweet but not overwhelming. Fortified with a memory of my daughter in joyful times, I carefully packed up the perfume and added it to my take-home pile. One morning, hoping to chase a bout of melancholy, I sprayed on Julie’s special fragrance. Wearing the cologne was like wrapping myself in an invisible quilt with my beloved daughter. Another morning, I splashed some on before driving Cari and Michael to school. When I dropped them off, I blinked back tears as they gave me extra tight hugs and told me how good I smelled. When I mentioned the incident to a grief counselor, she encouraged me to wear the cologne to keep Julie’s memory alive for my grandchildren -- and me. Without fail, whenever I wore Julie’s cologne, one or both of her children, told me, “You smell good.” Years later, with the original decanter puffing air, I was on a mission to find a replacement. At every department store, I heard the same story, “Sorry. That fragrance has been discontinued.” I was about to give up hope when I found two bottles at a perfume outlet.

Not wanting to run out again, I purchased two of their largest bottles. After that, I wore the cologne on special occasions -- Mother’s Day, Julie’s birthday, Christmas holidays -- or when Cari or Michael had important school, church or sporting events. I was determined that, although their mom couldn’t be with them in the flesh, she would remain in spirit. Not wanting to change happy moments into sad ones, I avoided telling them the fragrance they liked so much on me was actually their mom’s. That changed one afternoon in December. With Christmas just weeks away, I spritzed on some cologne shortly before Cari and I bundled up to go shopping. Knowing the roads would be crowded, I hoped that Cari, who’d turned sixteen a few months earlier, wouldn’t ask to drive. No such luck. Before we walked out the door, she said, “Can I drive? Please.” Putting on a brave face, I handed her my keys. “Sure, sweetie.” She buckled her seat belt and said, “You smell good. What’re you wearing?” I told her the name of the perfume and then confessed, “It was your mom’s favorite. What’s really nice is that every time I wear it, either you or Michael compliment me on how good I smell.” Expecting a tearful response, I was relieved when she smiled and answered, “That’s cool.” “It is.” I nodded. Focusing on the road ahead, a sense of peace settled over me knowing my daughter’s sweet memory will always be alive in our hearts.

Cinder’s Christmas by Marsha Tennant

Christmas and canines just seem to go together. A puppy wearing a big red bow, bounding around the Christmas tree, is a familiar image. It reminds us of the joy and childlike delight we experience at this time of the year. In my family, however, the pup had oversized paws, could not run without falling down, and the bow was far from neatly tied.

Christmas Eve was when the eggnog was made. It needed to “sit” overnight. High end brandy, along with eggs and cream were combined to make a concoction unlike anything else. It was one of the highlights of the holidays. It never occurred to us that Cinder would show any interest in the liquid gold. So it was set on the porch with the rest of the food.

Cinder was my husband’s hunting dog. She came from a long line of Maryland aristocrats. Her pedigree said she should be the one of the best in the duck blinds. She lived up to her name on the Chesapeake Bay. That dog flat out loved to hunt. She was the first to load into the old green Bronco used to carry the cargo to the water. She made it clear this was her purpose in life. She was a working dog!

Christmas morning arrived. We were all up and ready to begin the family traditions we had enjoyed over the years. My husband headed to the porch to let Cinder out to do her business. She was already out…..literally! We heard him yelling, “Wake up, girl!” He kept saying this over and over. Our ninety pound lab lay motionless on the concrete floor. She was groaning and rolling her eyes. Slowly we began looking around to see if we could discover what had happened to her. It was then we heard my mom scream, “That damn dog drank my eggnog!” Cinder was still not responding too well, and my husband was distraught. He and this dog were joined at the hip in their passion for hunting. My mom could have cared less. She was ranting about the expensive brandy and other ingredients. To add insult to injury, she was complaining that Cinder drank at least half of it. She had put the eggnog in a big pot with a lid to cover it. Evidently it was not secure enough. Cinder decided to begin celebrating early.

Unfortunately, Cinder was not as disciplined or cooperative on land. One Christmas, she was recovering from delivering eight black and yellow lab puppies. She had cared for and quickly weaned them as she eyed the hunting calendar posted on the refrigerator. Our spitz, Snowball, was all too happy to take over puppy daycare for her. Cinder’s goal was to get back in shape for the season ahead. The day the vet cleared her to “return to work” made her smile. Yes, she came back home grinning and circling my husband like she was ready to go at that moment. The call of the cold and wet duck blind was calling her name. It was Christmas in Virginia. There was a protocol as to how we celebrated the season. Ham biscuits, cheese balls, coconut cake and eggnog were the must-haves for our family. My mother used the screened-in back porch for the “other” refrigerator. It was cold enough in the 1970s to leave food out there for days. Sometimes it resembled a church covered dish supper. A small bounty of made-from-scratch food and libations was spread out on the tables and chairs. We were spending the days before Christmas at my parents’ house. They were not too keen on Cinder being inside. They were from the generation that believed animals belonged outside. Cinder loved the cold, so she was okay on the porch. As the big day approached, my mom was busy cooking and baking ahead. The porch frig would soon be overflowing. The aluminum foil wrapped dishes illuminated the porch in the true holiday spirit. Cinder knew not to mess with the food.

These were not the festive sounds of the season. Cinder was groaning while trying to get to her feet. Mom was letting out a string of phrases I had not heard from her in my entire life. My dad laughed nervously and suggested that the alcohol would probably kill the dog slobber. That only incited my mom’s rage. Eventually Cinder was able to walk and respond to simple commands. There would be no emergency visit to the vet. Mom settled down and went into the kitchen to begin cooking breakfast. We decided to wait to open packages until reasonable calm returned to the house. No matter what had just happened out on the porch, it was Christmas. Cinder was not able to hunt for several days.

Faith in Miracles: Ginger Gray Doodlebugs

What about you would surprise people? Probably that I continue to enjoy my job and am so passionate about this business. We have faced many struggles over the last two years with the fire and the recent flooding, but always seem to bounce back and keep on going. Our struggles have made us stronger and have made me appreciate it all on a new level. We are blessed with wonderful friends and customers that have shown so much support through everything, and it really makes what I do easy to love.

In this “Season of Miracles,” please tell us about a personal miracle in your life. I can’t say that I have experienced an actual miracle, but I have experienced many blessings from God. In July of 2013, I lost my precious father to cancer. In August I lost a cousin in a boating accident, and in September of the same year, we lost our business to the massive Front Street fire. It was truly a season of painful experiences, but with much prayer and an overwhelming amount of support from our community and friends we were able to find a new location and reopen within six weeks. Although we have been bombarded with struggles in the recent years, my faith has been the one constant that keeps me going. One of my favorite Bible verses has always been 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” I have had to lean on my faith quite a bit lately, but one thing I know is that God never lets us down. If you celebrate Christmas, who puts up the tree? I always put up our Christmas tree. It starts off as a family event, but typically after about 30 minutes I’m left alone to finish! One year my husband decided to surprise me and put the tree up without me. My mom and I drove up from shopping that evening, and there was the tree with a huge dark spot facing the window where no lights were placed. We don’t let him do it unsupervised anymore.

36

What is your favorite holiday activity? Time spent with our families -- we celebrate Christmas with my husband’s family on Christmas Eve, and this is one of my favorite times. I was an only child so the holidays at my house were usually on the quiet side, but my husband has two brothers, and it is usually quite loud! We attend our Christmas Eve service at church and return to have dinner and open presents. An Elvis Christmas CD is always playing in the background because that was his dad’s favorite, and by the end of the evening we have pulled out old movies of past Christmas celebrations. The kids always enjoy watching those! How can Doodlebugs help parents and grandparents prepare their special little ones for holiday parties and celebrations? And in finding the perfect gifts? Doodlebugs has a wonderful selection of holiday apparel and shoes for Christmas photos, parties and other celebrations. We have a wide array of gifts for every age, including adorable raincoats and rainboots, stuffed animals and much more. We are excited to help you find that perfect outfit or gift for all of the little ones on your list, and we offer free gift wrap to make the holidays less stressful for all! We also have a website (www.doodlebugschild.com) for our customers that aren’t able to stop in but still want that perfect gift. Doodlebugs is located at 918 Front Street in Georgetown. Contact Ginger at 843-546-6858 or visit www.doodlebugschild.com. Hours are Monday - Friday 10am - 5:30pm and Saturday 10am - 5pm

Kid’s Read It! Nicole Says…Read These Books to the Kids!

Reviews by Nicole McManus

Santa’s Favorite Story

by Hisako Aoki and Illustrated by Ivan Gantschev Santa grew tired during a walk in the woods and stopped to take a nap. The woodland creatures saw him and thought Christmas was arriving early. As word spread through the forest, they excitedly gathered around sleeping Santa, waiting for him to wake up. When he did, he told them the story of the birth of Christ on the very first Christmas. After the story, the animals accompany Santa to the North Pole to help him get ready for Christmas. Santa teaches everyone about the best present of all.

38

This book is beautifully illustrated and the wide pages make it easy for everyone to see as they snuggle up as a family. The birth of Christ is told from the perspective of the shepherds as they follow the Star of Bethlehem. Santa’s Favorite Story is a short, cute book to share with little ones and remind them of how Christmas came to be.

Merry Christmas! Great Joy

by Kate DiCamillo and Illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline Frances is an angel in the church’s Christmas play with a very important line to say. In the days leading up to the play, she sees an older man with a monkey on the street corner. When Frances discovers that they are homeless, she tries to get her mom to invite them to dinner. However, her mom will not allow strangers to enter her home, which leads Frances to invite him to her church play. In this day and age, it seems many adults are too busy to help, but this sweet child knows the importance of lending a hand. Although the sad, older man’s story is never shared, readers get a beautiful ending, thanks to the incredible last picture. The glorious illustrations bring to life a previous decade, set in a mystical winter, where anything can happen.

Nicole McManus Nicole McManus loves to read, to the point that she is sure she was born with a book in her hands. She writes book reviews in the hopes of helping others find the magic found through reading. Contact her at ariesgrlreview.com.

Volunteering On My Own Terms by Erika Hoffman

When my kids were in elementary school, I noticed that many other moms were good bakers and brought treats to school on a regular basis. I couldn’t compete. I’m no Martha Stewart. Several were adept at craft projects. Again, Martha and I were worlds apart. Nor did I care to be a go-for, whose duty was mostly to stand at the Xerox machine running off copies of worksheets for teachers. I didn’t want to dig up flower beds at the front of the school beautifying the grounds. Nor did I wish to tutor on a one-on-one basis in some out-of-the-way closet. Before I had my own children, I taught French 1 and high school English. Creating lesson plans was more up my alley than supplying youngsters with treats. So, I decided to use my teaching skills to present units to classes on a weekly basis. First, I needed to discover what interested my own kids and then determine if that was also what interested their peers. Next, I’d have to find out whether the subject intrigued the teacher enough for her to allow me to take over her class twice a week for 30 minutes to impart a fun learning experience.

Company named the candy after her. By the end of the year, most of the class could recite the presidents in order up to George Herbert Bush. They had a time line of American History. And these pint sized scholars knew trivia with which to stump their parents! As my four children proceeded through school, I’d switch curricula. Somewhat of a Francophile, I spent a year teaching fourth and fifth graders common French expressions as well as showing them all the French words they use regularly, although unaware of their being French. So, we compiled books of words, like menu, soupe du jour, quiche. And we cooked French food. And we learned a little history about the French folks who contributed to our American history, like Lafayette, Jacques Cartier and La Salle. We collected postcards from American cities such as New Orleans, where French culture influenced architecture, cuisine and language. Playing Bingo in French or singing “Frere Jacques” or acting out certain “faux pas” of culture misunderstandings became a break from the students’ usual routine.

All of this took place in the days before computers became commonplace! So having a different face in the room was somewhat entertaining to the kids in itself. My first foray into volunteering occurred in my oldest son’s kindergarten class. He liked dinosaurs. Not surprisingly, many of the five year olds did. Therefore, I versed myself in the habits of dinos, knowledge of dinos that kindergarteners would understand and dino lore. I bought plastic models, drawing books and easy readers. Each time I appeared we studied a new dino and colored a picture of him or her in all sorts of rainbow hues, which I reasoned might not be historically inaccurate because no one has recovered the skin of these prehistoric dragons. Only bones, tracks and fossilized eggs! So pink Stegosauruses were all right by me!

Although I recommend volunteering, I have a caveat. A soul has to do something that she enjoys or else the giving of one’s time for free becomes burdensome and boring despite good intentions.

As my own kids advanced through school, I changed what I taught. When my second son was in first grade and my oldest in third, I began a unit on the U.S. Presidents. I started that off by giving the kids coins. We studied the penny and made a rubbing of it, and then I told them some facts about Abe Lincoln. Then I handed them a nickel, and we did the same. Then a dime, a quarter, a half dollar. Soon they knew fun facts about Thomas Jefferson, FDR, Washington and JFK. And even more important to them, they now had some cash for ice cream in the cafeteria. One day I brought in a Teddy Bear, and we learned about the 26th President. A bag of peanuts for each kid introduced Jimmy Carter. A Baby Ruth candy bar was the hook to learn about Grover Cleveland, the only Prez whose wife gave birth to a baby while her husband served in the White House. The Clevelands named her Ruth, and Mars Candy

So, if baking cupcakes is not your cup of tea, explore your fortes and approach the person in charge with a simple proposal. Say: “This is my plan. Do you need a person who …..” Often, the answer will be a resounding “YES!” And you’ve killed two birds with one stone -- you get to do a job you enjoy while you help someone be exposed to something he might not have experienced had you not possessed the courage to state frankly: “Here’s what I’d like to do as a volunteer project. Can you use me?”

In my case, I had to find something in which I was versed, enthusiastic and willing to commit hours to -- on a regular basis. If I hadn’t been passionate about my “charity chore,” my volunteering would have been short lived. One year I received a plaque naming me “Volunteer of the Year.” That acknowledgment might seem like a minuscule reward for the time commitment; however, for me it was satisfying. It made me realize that sometimes one can convey passion that becomes contagious. That contagion makes others recognize your work as a worthy contribution.

Uniquely Gifted by Diana Stark

“Why didn’t I just offer to make cupcakes?” I asked myself as I pulled into the craft store’s parking lot. For reasons I still didn’t understand, I’d volunteered to plan the craft for my son’s school Christmas party. I am not crafty. And the party was tomorrow. I’d spent time on Pinterest, hoping to find a craft that kindergartners would enjoy. I found plenty of ideas, but they were all way too crafty for me. Did I mention the party was tomorrow? That’s how I ended up in the craft store parking lot on the day before the party. I knew it was a long-shot, but I was hoping to find some pre-made craft kits for the party. I was so wrapped up in my mission that I hardly noticed the sound of a bell ringing. I walked past a woman who smiled and wished me a Merry Christmas. I barely glanced at her as I returned the sentiment. I entered the store and started looking for the craft kits. After wandering around for a while, I found them, but there wasn’t much left. After all, I was looking at Christmas craft kits on December 20th. I found something that would work, but there weren’t enough kits for the whole class. I asked a sales person, but of course, they didn’t have any more in the back. I sighed and wondered what I was going to do now. I went out to my car, but I didn’t drive away. I could still hear the bell ringing, and I thought about the woman. She was volunteering for the Salvation Army, and she was outside on one of the coldest days of the year. I realized I couldn’t do anything about my situation, but I could improve hers. I walked back to the store. “Can I bring you a cup of coffee or anything?” I asked. “Oh, I’d love a hot chocolate,” she said. “Thank you so much!” I headed to the grocery store to pick up the drink. I was barely out of the car when I heard another bell ringing. This time, it was a man raising money for the Salvation Army. I smiled at him. “I came here to pick up a hot chocolate for the bell ringer at the craft store. Would you like something?” “Coffee would be great. Thanks,” he said.

44

I went into the store and grabbed the drinks at the little café. I went back out and handed the man his coffee. “Thank you for doing this,” he said. I smiled. “It’s the least I can do for someone who is volunteering his time for such a worthy organization.” “I sure appreciate your kindness.” “Of course. You’re making the world a better place.” His smile grew bigger. “So are you.” I thought about my procrastination with my son’s Christmas party. “I wouldn’t say that, Sir.” “You matter more than you think you do.” It might sound silly, but tears sprung into my eyes at his words. “Thank you for saying that. Everyone needs to feel that they matter.” He smiled. “That’s true.” He nodded toward the hot chocolate in my hands. “Go remind the lady at the craft store that she matters too. I know her, and she needs to hear it.” I nodded, glad I’d put aside my own dilemma for these few minutes. When I handed her the drink, the lady smiled and wrapped her hands around the cup. “Thank you so much. It is positively frigid today.” “How long will you be out here?” I asked. “Until 4 o’clock,” she said. “But I don’t mind. When my kids were little, we didn’t have much. I did the best I could, but the only Christmas presents they ever got were from the Salvation Army toy drive. They’ve done a lot for me, and now I have the chance to give back.” “That’s great that you’re able to do that.” “Thank you again for the hot chocolate,” she said. I looked her right in the eyes. “What you’re doing out here? It matters. You’re making a difference. You are giving other families the same hope that you were given. It’s important work.”

She smiled through her tears. “That warmed me up even more than the hot chocolate. Thank you, Honey.” I smiled and said good-bye. I was glad I’d gotten the chance to meet both of them. But on the way home, my worries over the party crept back in. I’d procrastinated, and now I had to come up with a great idea by tomorrow morning. It seemed unlikely at best. When I arrived home, I saw that I had a voicemail from one of the other moms in Nathan’s class. “I know you volunteered to plan the craft for the kids’ party,” she said, “but I just found the cutest idea on Pinterest, and I was hoping, if you didn’t mind too much, if I could do it.” If I didn’t mind? This was the best possible solution. I called her back and told her that I would love to turn the craft project over to her. “Oh, and I signed up to bring cupcakes,” she said. “I really don’t know why. I hate to bake. Would you mind?” I laughed and agreed to bring the cupcakes. I hung up, relieved beyond reason. And I realized that we all have gifts and talents, and no one’s is exactly the same. That other mom is crafty, and I’m not. I like to bake, and she doesn’t. I thought about the bell ringers with the Salvation Army, who had both given their time to help others. I remembered the hot drinks I’d delivered. It was such a small gesture, but with it came the reminder that someone cared. At Christmas, and always, we need to remember that we’re each uniquely gifted, and the purpose of our gifts is to help others. To remind them that they matter. And sometimes, all it takes is a smile and a hot drink.

A Box Full of Love by Linda O’Connell

Even when I was a married mother of two children, my mom was like a spy in the sky. It was difficult to pull a fast one on her, but one Christmas, I succeeded. Our house was on a residential street. Mom lived a few doors away, on the second floor of an apartment complex. Her kitchen window allowed a clear view to our house. She always knew when her grandchildren were playing in the yard, and she was fully aware of when I came and went. If she couldn’t reach me on the telephone, she’d walk down the block to visit and inquire as to where we had been. She wasn’t so much a pest as she was inquisitive, and she wanted to be in the know. Despite her nosey nature, Mom was a great help. She babysat anytime we needed her. She visited daily, and often washed my dishes at a time when my hands were the only dishwasher in the house. She helped me fold laundry as we talked about the kids, old memories and good times. We enjoyed one another’s company, and we looked forward to Nana’s visits. She always came bearing a sweet treat for me and my little girl and boy. So, I wanted to do something special for her at Christmas. Mom did not know that my brother, who lived out West, was coming to visit, and we planned to surprise her for the holidays. How was I going to sneak him in my house without the “investigator” gawking and catching us? How would I keep her away for an entire day? How could I sneak him into her apartment? I went to a furniture store and found a large empty cardboard box that a stove had come in. That would work perfectly. I stashed it in the garage and instituted my plan a week in advance. I constantly complained about her small, apartment-size stove. “Mom, how can you possibly cook with more than one pan on this stove? It’s way too small.” “Oh, it’s fine,” she said. “Well, I’ve been thinking maybe you need a new stove. Wouldn’t you like a new stove for Christmas?” She got all flustered. “Oh no, this stove came with the apartment. I don’t need a new stove. Buy yourself something. Or something for the kids. Don’t spend that kind of money on me.” I worked my angle for five days. When she came to our house, I pointed out the benefits of my large cook top. She said, “That’s fine for a family, but my stove works for me.” Then she changed the subject, clearly aggravated. On the day my brother, John, came in from Nevada, I had to sneak him through my back door. I was Mom’s only form of transportation other than a city bus. She called to ask me to take her to the grocery store. I told her I was busy baking Christmas cookies on my nice big stove. “Now, don’t start on that,” she said.

My brother and I made a beeline to Mom’s apartment with the stove box. I entered through her back door and set it up in the kitchen. When Mom came in with her groceries, I was waiting in her living room. “Here, let me put these away for you, Mom. I baked you some cookies. You always do so much for me. I want to help you. I have your Christmas present in the kitchen. It’s from me and John. He paid for half.” She looked puzzled and tried to nose her way into the small kitchenette as I set her groceries on the counter. I blocked her way. “Why don’t we make a phone call first to John in Reno, so he can share in the joy of listening to you open your gift from us? I have a long distance calling card, so it won’t cost you anything. Sit down there on the couch.” Holding the receiver button down, I pretended to dial the dozen digits on my card. Then I talked to my brother who was in the kitchen squatting in the box with her extension phone. “Hi John. I’m here at Mom’s, and she’s about to open her gift from us.” I handed her the living room phone. She had a typical conversation, inquired about his well being and thanked him. She told him he shouldn’t have spent any money on her. She asked him if he was planning a visit anytime soon. “I can hardly hear you. Can you speak louder?” she asked. I said, “Mom, tell him to hang on; we’re going into the kitchen to open your gift. Keep him on the phone.” She tried to be nice, but spilled her true feelings. “I hope you kids didn’t get me a stove. Your sister thinks I need one, but I don’t.” She looked at me and shook her head with a stern expression. As we walked into the kitchen, Mom gave me the evil eye when she read the word “range” on the box. She shook her head and hissed, “This is too big for my apartment.” I took the phone from her and said, “John. Hold on while she rips this box open. It’s all taped up.” I spoke into the phone. “Mom’s complaining about what we got her, but once she sees it, I know she’ll really like it.” She ripped the packaging tape and lifted one flap and then the other. My brother jumped up with her extension phone in hand, and we shouted, “Merry Christmas, Mom!” Wide-eyed and speechless, she looked from one of us to the other. Her eyes welled with tears. She cried, “You stinkers, you both got me. Merry Christmas to you!” That was one year the surprise was on Mom, and I finally pulled one over on her.

“My neighbor, Rose, is here, and she says she’s going to the store; she’ll be glad to take you.”

Linda O’Connell

Mom walked down the block swinging her purse, her dark bouffant hair as big as cotton candy. Rose met her outside and hustled her to her car. I waved from the porch, and told her I’d bring her homemade cookies later.
