letter from the editor Every month, I come up with a list of questions for our Sasee interviews, and this month I asked everyone to define elegance. Without exception, the answers were thoughtful and interesting. One person told me this was a very challenging question, and after giving it some thought, I agreed. Elegance is defined in many ways, and is often used as a synonym for beauty, but I know many women who are not what society would call beautiful and are still elegant. It’s not the clothes either. I have a friend who, even gardening in her oldest pair of shorts and a tee shirt, is one of the most elegant women I’ve ever known. So what is it? I guess we all have our own definition, but I believe elegance is self-confidence tempered by a kind heart and gentle nature. Elegant women feel good about who they are, and are not overly concerned about other’s opinions, even though they do take care of themselves and are careful with their appearance. That said, all women have elements of elegance and grace. It’s part of who we are as women, and if we love ourselves, elegance comes naturally Enjoy our “Elegant” issue! All Summer Long, by Derek Gores Derek Gores was born in New York in 1971 and was awarded his BFA from Rhode Island School of Design 1993. In his collage portraits, the artist recycles magazines, labels, data and assorted found analog and digital materials to create the works on canvas. The series showcases Gores’ contrasting interests in the living beauty of the figure, the angular, abstract design aesthetics of fashion, and a fearless sense of play. His fine art canvases are exhibited by galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Sydney, Cologne, Miami, Santa Fe and more. Gores’ collectors and clients include Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Dwell Magazine, ESPN, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, the National Football League, and LiveNation. Gores, who lives in Melbourne, Florida, was commissioned as the 2013 Official Artist of the Kentucky Derby, was honored to have his work selected for the Manifest Hope DC exhibit coinciding with the Presidential Inauguration in 2009, and in 2010 was named “One of the 40 important artists of the New Contemporary Movement,” while in an exhibition in London. Gores like his pictures to barely come together with teasing little details. The mind can’t help but wander, even when trying to focus on one thing. In the collages, some of the little bits he uses are deliberate, but the artist also trusts randomness to help build an end result more interesting than he could have planned. Proper Golf Attire by Mary Ann Crimi

On the cover of the May issue of Golf Digest is a very stylish, trend-setting woman who I believe is a professional golfer, or perhaps a model. She is wearing all white with the exception of modest red and gray stripes on her shoes, and matching red shoelaces. I believe her name is Paulina, or Heidi, or maybe Twiggy. I look a little like her if you squint your eyes. I have a new purple golf shirt and a new black skort. My golf shoes are a lovely lavender, with both white and lavender shoelaces. I can wear one pair of laces or the other, or both at the same time. The shoes were a birthday present. My closet boasts a rainbow array of golf shirts from designers A to U (Adidas to Under Armour). Yes, to look at my wardrobe you would think I had a respectable handicap. Alas, in a foursome, I am the only handicap. This apparel in my closet is all part of the American Retirement Dream. I have to say, however, this was my husband Tony’s dream and not really mine. It began with a site called Zillow and a search for a condo just steps away from the National Golf Museum in Golf World, Florida: one bedroom, one bath, a microwave and a beer cooler. I think his impetus for including a suitable – dare I say fashionable? – me in the ARD (American Retirement Dream) may have begun years ago when he planned a winter getaway golf trip for us in Myrtle Beach. I didn’t protest too much as the package deal included an oceanfront room and an indoor pool. However, it was a golf trip, and I was expected to play golf. We outfitted me at the local Good Will: five clubs and an overused golf bag. He didn’t think to outfit the rest of me. Neither did I – until it was too late. On my bottom half, the best I could do was summer-weight khaki slacks. I was golf savvy enough to know I needed a shirt with a collar for the top, but here all I could muster was a wrinkle-resistant business blouse. Oh, and did I mention I had never played before? It was one thing to plan to play with my husband, but golfers come in fours. That meant playing with two strangers. Two strangers who could actually play golf. Tony told me not to worry. We would be in Myrtle Beach. We would never see these people again. Here is the best part of the story. The woman was gorgeous in her Liz Claiborne matching ensemble. Her husband was wearing Greg Norman, I believe. Tony was ever so handsome in Peter Millar. Liz played admirably. Tony and Greg kept pace. I can proudly say I never lost a ball. Of course, that was because I only hit grounders. Short grounders. And because I often threw my ball. And because I gave up on the tenth hole, but I had a wonderful ride in the cart. Of course, we chatted with these golfing strangers. What do you do? Where are you from? Dundalk? Dundalk! The ‘burb just a short putt down ’95 from our house? What! Your brother-in-law runs the cleaning shop where Tony

takes his dress shirts? What? I teach your sister’s daughter? “Oh, Ms. C. What a lovely outfit you are wearing to school today! But aren’t those your GOLF CLOTHES?” I was humiliated. Even though I know it’s only a game. I think Tony felt badly for me, too. Shortly after that trip, on Valentine’s Day, I received my first golf shirt. I already told you that I got golf shoes for my birthday. For my anniversary I got my very own unused clubs. Then the golf shirts began arriving at random. At first, I thought our marriage was resuming its early days – you know, flowers for no reason except an appreciation that I had conceded to be his wife. Eventually, I realized that one more shirt meant free shipping for his latest model titanium club. One new shirt arrived with monogrammed golf balls. My next shirt came with a golf video and some kind of parachute practice club. And then one day we actually retired. I managed to expand the ARD to include two extra bedrooms and another bath. And a beach if we look south. To the east, west and north, however, we are surrounded by golf courses. Once here, Tony offered to take me to a driving range to give me a few pointers. After about ten minutes, he assumed I was deaf to his instructions and repeated them all again, this time more loudly. I asked him to pretend I was his date instead of his wife. The next day he found an ad in the paper for a golf clinic – for me. I went. Good sport that I am, I attempted all the golf tricks. I practiced. I used the parachute thingy-majig. And today, I can honestly say I have peaked. My average score? Honey, there is no score. I don’t do upperlevel math. But I have found a few friends who play my game. We really like driving the golf cart. We easily keep pace with the other golfers because we never, never hit over water. Or sand. And we always throw our balls or carry them with us if we start to get too tired. April Bensch Tell us about yourself. I live in Litchfield with my husband, David, a residential contractor. We have three girls, Elody is 14, Sophie is 11 and Hailey is 8. I’m originally from Tampa, Florida. Growing up, we vacationed all along the East Coast, and I knew I wanted to live either in Virginia or South Carolina, but Virginia turned out to be too cold for this Florida girl! I graduated from Converse College, and after I was married, we first moved to Hilton Head, then to Litchfield. I love to garden and ice skate, of all things. For my upcoming 40th birthday, we’re having a skating party in Charleston. How would you define elegance? In my opinion, elegance is an artistic balance of beauty that gracefully reaches the point where absolutely nothing should be added or taken away. What is the most important thing to know when deciding on a mural for your home? I believe you need to know what will continuously bring you joy. If you hate laundry, but love to garden, turn your laundry room into a garden. Usually, murals are done in places you spend a lot of time, like the main living area, but it’s nice to have a surprise like my powder room. [April’s tiny powder room is covered in a gorgeous stonework mural.] What led you to become an artist? I am blessed to have been born with a gift. Once I reached about 10 years old, I realized that not everyone grows up to be an astronaut or a ballerina – and I realized that grownups were not that impressed when you said you wanted to grow up and be an artist. For a creative person, I’m very analytical and originally planned to go into the medical field. My husband and his family noticed all the creative things I did, and as I was preparing to go to graduate school, they talked to me about pursuing my art as a career. The timing was perfect, as I was at a turning point in my life. I decided to let God have a role in determining my direction. I took a leap of faith and plunged into life as a full time artist, doing murals, faux finishes, canvas, furniture, antique reproduction, almost anything artistic. There are always new techniques – and I am always learning. What projects are you working on now? I’m working with the owners of La Festa, a restaurant in the old Cagney’s, doing murals inside and out, faux finishes, furniture and canvas work. I teach classes at Paint and Unwined in Murrells Inlet, and I’m also an illustrator for children’s book author, Peggy Wheeler Cribb. In October, I’m going to India on a mission trip with White Harvest Ministries. I’m very excited; I’ve never even left the country! The Long and the Short of It by Kim Seeley

I realize that there is no way to tell this story without revealing to the world that I am over the hill, older than dirt, whatever you wish to call it. But when I see the super short skirts the women in Hollywood and New York City are wearing on television today, inwardly I smile. As they attempt to tug their skirts down over their behinds, they think they have invented a new style. Ha! My generation knows that we owned the mini-skirt many decades ago. The awakening of my fashion sense occurred during the mini-skirt revolution, the era of Twiggy. I attended high school in the days when assistant principals scoured the halls with rulers, and if your skirt was not the correct number of inches above the knee, you were sent to the office, and your mother was called to take you home or bring you a longer skirt. Some of my friends flouted the rule just as kids today push the boundaries of their generation’s rules. Being sent home was practically a badge of honor. I never was sent home, probably because my parents were stricter than the principal. I had mini-skirts and mini-dresses, but my grandmother made most of mine so they passed my parents’ inspection. But the biggest fashion statement in my high school days was not the mini-skirt. We females won the right to wear pants to school. During my junior and senior years of high school, we were finally awarded the right to wear pants, not just any pants, of course, but pantsuits. This meant you had to have a jacket and coordinated slacks outfit. We were ecstatic! We could wear pantsuits to school! We no longer had to wear hose every day. This was a major breakthrough in female rights of my era. The right to wear slacks, in our estimation, should have been in the Constitution. The fight for regular pants, t-shirts and jeans was still many years off, but we felt we had broken through the shackles of female fashion oppression. Then, during my college years, the fashion designers reversed the trends. Mini was out; maxi was in. I owned several of the maxi-dresses, reveling once again in a new-found freedom – no hose, no socks, just platform shoes or sandals, maxidress and underwear. I still have one of my maxi-dresses in the closet. It is the one I wore when I met my future husband at the back-to-school teachers’ bash at the headmaster’s house. I was one of the new faculty members, fresh from college in my halter-top maxi-dress. My husband still recalls it fondly, and it must have worked some magic. Less than one year later, we were married.

Throughout my married and professional life, hemlines have changed, longer and shorter, up and down. Once I became the mother of two girls, I found most of my fashion instincts became focused on their clothes, more than my own. As a product of the ’60s and ’70s, I was probably a bit more relaxed when it came to my daughters’ fashion choices. I had already lived through the long and the short of it. My oldest daughter went through a Punky Brewster period in which all of her clothes were shockingly bright and wild-patterned. I did not raise an eyebrow. My youngest daughter longed for a pair of Lucky Jeans, when the Lucky brand was first becoming popular in our part of the country. Of course, I discovered that the real reason she wanted them was that she had seen them on a trip to France, they were terribly expensive, and they were quite possibly the lowest-cut jeans I had ever witnessed. Did I buy them for her? Of course I did. Somewhere in this mama’s body still beats the heart of that young girl who flouted her mini-skirts, celebrated her pantsuits and slipped rather daringly into her halter top maxi. Whether long or short, I embraced the fashions of my teen years, and in my closet, next to my maxi-dress, hangs one of my handmade-by-Grandma minidresses. If there is anything I have learned about fashion, it is that it is fleeting. If a particular style does not suit you, just be patient, a new designer is waiting in the wings to dazzle you. Tell us a little about yourself. Lyndon: We have four children ages 11, 9, 7 and 2 1/2, so that’s really all we do! [laughing] The three oldest are boys and the youngest is a girl – she’s quite the queen. We live in Saluda, South Carolina, where I was raised, and Melanie grew up about 15 minutes from me. Melanie: We lived in Charlotte for three years while Lyndon was racing in NASCAR. Soon after our first son was born, we wanted to go home, back to our roots. How would you define elegance? Melanie: That is such a great word, but I’d like to redefine it a little. I know women whom I consider elegant that aren’t tall, skinny and well dressed. These ladies have discovered the beauty in the woman God has created them to be. In that, their beauty shines from the inside out and is revealed in how they carry themselves and how they dress. Lyndon: I live with a great example of elegance. I hope our daughter patterns herself after her mother. What is the most important thing to know when updating your wardrobe? Lyndon: Don’t be afraid to go outside of your box. And, allow the experts to help. Lyndon: Before Melanie and I bought this business, I had zero experience in retail and women’s clothing. I started my life racing for NASCAR, from age 15 until I was 26. Honestly, I got sick of risking my life every weekend. After I left NASCAR, I went into the National Guard and served for eight years. I spent a year in Afghanistan and was away from my family for a total of 18 months. By then, my marriage was on the rocks. In 2010, I was saved and gave my life to God, and, through Him, we were able to put our lives back together. A friend of mine brought this business opportunity to my attention and, at first I was not at all interested. What did I know about retail? But, eventually, I agreed to look into it. Things went so smoothly, and I have become like a son to the previous owners. I appreciate them so much. I took ownership in March of 2012, and Afforables now has six stores in South Carolina. And, we have wonderful people working for us. What’s new and exciting at Afforables? Lyndon: We get shipments in every week, so there is always something new! Whitley Hamlin:

Generations of Style

“Everything I have is pretty amazing,” Whitley said. “They traveled all over and had great lives. I have a skirt from Egypt, a dress from Morocco, charm bracelets from France…everything is symbolic. These pieces are my secret weapon: My pockets may not be that deep, but I have inheritance pieces that money can’t buy.” After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Whitley travelled to New York and worked in the fashion industry. Eventually, she missed home and moved to Charlotte to be closer to family. “I owned and operated a Nanny Placement Service for eight years. I loved my work, but after my second son was born in 2011, I was forced to reevaluate.” Whitley sold her company and stayed at home for a time, but her creative drive needed fueling. She threw herself into decorating her home, making her own curtains, pillows and countless do-it-yourself projects. Today, her living room is a perfect example of Whitley’s eclectic style and has been featured in print and online.

Every day, most women I know stand in front of an overflowing closet trying to decide what to wear. Sound familiar? And usually, according to Whitley Hamlin, wardrobe stylist and creator of the Queen City Style, it comes down to the same few outfits. That’s why she loves to purge. “If you’ve had something for a year or two, get rid of it. The more clean and clear you make your closet, the more effective it will be.” Of course, there are always exceptions, and those exceptions are what led 37 year old Whitley to her success as a fashion blogger and personal, editorial and commercial wardrobe stylist. Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Whitley lives in Charlotte with her husband Jon, a software engineer, and her two children, Worth and Hank, three and six years old. Growing up, she spent many summer vacations along the Grand Strand, and her dad, an award-winner shag dancer, taught her the state dance and instilled a love of the area at an early age. She and her family still vacation in Pawleys Island every year. But, her grandmother and great-grandmother were the biggest influences on young Whitley, instilling a lifelong love of fashion. Both women were department store buyers in Eastern North Carolina, each with their own unique style. After they retired, both women loved seeing young Whitley play dress up with their garments and accessories. From these strong, fashionable women, Whitley inherited not only her sense of style, but many unique and classic pieces that she still wears and uses in her work.

Whitley also loves to write and, of course, still plays dress up with her extensive collection of inherited clothing and accessories. When she submitted a story about her grandmother and great-grandmother to Lucky Magazine, it was chosen for the back page and the Queen City Style was born. “When I saw my article on the newsstands in Asheville, I decided I would write a blog. Before long, people were actually reading it, with the fashion element getting the most attention. I started putting myself in front of the camera wearing these great clothes and won an award from Charlotte Magazine for the best blog!” Soon, Whitley was getting requests for personal styling, and landed a monthly fashion column in Charlotte Parent Magazine. Her work snowballed, with private and corporate clients clamoring for Whitley’s styling expertise. But what exactly is a personal stylist? Whitley works with men and women, ages ranging from mid-30s up. Her clients are mostly based in and around Charlotte, but she does have clients along the Grand Strand that she visits periodically. After the initial visit, Whitley helps clients purge their closets, coordinate outfits and come up with a list of the things they need. She then helps them shop for special occasion pieces, coming up with a wardrobe that suits their needs and lifestyle. “I believe in investing in quality pieces that will be worn for years. My dad has a pair of Gucci loafers he’s had for 30 years

Now I have a page on my blog devoted to the hat with photos of people wearing it.” As busy and as successful she is, Whitley feels family is her first priority. The day we spoke by Skype, she was spending a week in Virginia with her in-laws. Physical fitness is another priority, and this stylish mom ran the recent Boston Marathon, doing very well in spite of an injury. She still enjoys interior design and is constantly updating and changing her home. “My poor husband, he never knows where a piece of furniture will be – my living room has taken the brunt of my creative frustration.”

“I love what I do and am grateful for my success. This has allowed me to turn a hobby into a profession in only three years! I believe that is the key to happiness – do what you love and get paid for it. We only have one life, make it colorful and fun.” – they’ve been re-soled over and over and are still gorgeous.” Whitley also shared with me a few important pieces that every woman should have in her wardrobe. This first is a black dress. “Pick a dress that works for your body, not everyone wants to wear spaghetti straps,” Whitley began. “If you have great legs, focus on a shorter dress. Highlight the best parts of your body.” Next she recommends a classic trench coat. “These work for everyone and usually have a belt.” Then she added a stylish, amazing coat to the list. “You can always throw a wonderful coat over a simple outfit and be fashionable.” Last, Whitley says all women need a good pair of slacks and a white blouse, again in styles to suit your body type. “Pick what you like about your body and share that with everyone,” Whitley advises. “ Then don’t worry about the negatives. One of the least trendy celebrities is Jennifer Aniston. She is very consistent with her style and sticks to colors and lines that work for her. Fashionable is what makes you feel the very best about yourself on the inside and outside – most importantly on the inside. People know when you feel good about yourself – it radiates. You smile and hold yourself better.” The commercial side of Whitley’s business is exciting and diverse. She is known for her vintage, one-of-a-kind pieces that lend that special touch. Her hat is one of those pieces. “I found this Nine West hat in a mall. It’s a great looking hat, a ‘wow’ piece, and I always take it to photo shoots. At every

Treasures Fine Jewelers Tell us a little about yourself. I’ve been married for 23 years and have two stepdaughters, a grandson and son-inlaw. My wife and I live in Murrells Inlet. I grew up in Concord, near Charlotte, North Carolina. My grandfather was a jeweler there, and my dad was a Seiko salesman, so I guess the jewelry business runs in the family! I lived in Atlanta for a couple of years doing trade work and moved back to the Charlotte area in 1985 where I met my wife. We moved here in 1993, and I opened Huntley Jewelers in Myrtle Beach. In 2008, my business partner and I opened Treasures Fine Jewelers in the Market Common. How would you define elegance? I am apparel-challenged [smile], and only wear a suit to weddings and funerals. I like to see someone who doesn’t overdo and still looks great. Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly had such elegance. Today I look for someone who has a style that is personal but not gaudy. I look for the same in jewelry. It’s a very personal item, what works for one customer might not work for another. How did you become a jewelry designer? What do you love most about it? After I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in 1981, the job market was flat. My grandfather encouraged me to pursue a graduate degree at the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, and I did. It became my passion. I believe you should follow your heart. To pursue a career just for the money will never make you happy. I have always loved detail and doing meticulous stuff – as a child I love putting together model airplanes and working puzzles. My grandfather saw that and encouraged me. I really enjoy my career. Would you give our readers a few tips on selecting jewelry? I always encourage people to choose what makes them unique. Don’t go for fads or what everyone else is wearing. Consider your budget, your favorite color, metals you like and go from there. Styles have changed so much in the last 30 years and will probably be completely different in the next 15. What’s new and exciting at Treasures Fine Jewelers? Treasures Fine Jewelers is known for creating one of a kind custom jewelry and working with our customers to create their personal idea of elegance. We are a full service jeweler, and also do consignment, appraisals and repairs. If you have an idea, I can make it, and we can also incorporate your old metals. Our selection is unique and not what you see in mall stores. My signature piece is a conch shell – I made the mold from an actual shell and, at my wife’s suggestion, added gemstones. There was not a lot to do there, and as a child, I made Barbie Dream Houses from shoeboxes and fabric scraps – I sold them to raise money to decorate my bedroom. I was an entrepreneur at an early age and did my first design job at 5 years old! My grandmother taught me to sew and always encouraged me. I came to Myrtle Beach in 1988 and worked as a special events director for a large department store. Eventually, I opened my own business, Signature Events. I sold that business to go back to my first love, decorating and design. I have always felt called to do this – I enjoy my clients and love giving them the very best of their own personal style. My husband, Roger, and I have been married 18 years and have six children between us – ages 13 - 33. I adopted one child before we were married and one shortly after, he has two and we have two together. The youngest three still live at home. How would you define elegance? Elegance is a very ambiguous quality of dignified gracefulness punctuated with a flair of casualness. It’s the difference between flats and high heels! I love fashion and when I get dressed in the morning, I am creating a look to fit my day. I design what I put on my body. What is the most important thing to know when decorating your home? It’s important for anyone approaching decorating to get help. A trained professional can navigate the sometimes confusing myriad of details. I’m Forty

So here it is, 3 am, a week into the 40th year of my life, and I’m wide awake. I’m awake for a myriad of reasons, the main one being that I’m not asleep. My mind races about everything. What needs to be done, what I haven’t done, what I should have done, regrets, grudges, shame, what will I do, and when the hell am I going back to sleep? Perhaps firing up the old computer and writing at 3 am is not the fastest way to get some zzzzs, but I’ve also been reading for the past hour and that ain’t helping either. The past few weeks leading up to the official marking of me as a, horror of horrors, middle aged woman, I received a lot of unsolicited advice from friends of mine in their fifties. All of them seemed to be trying to reassure me that this was not in fact the end of my life. Geez a monetti, if you keep telling me it’s not that bad, then it certainly is THAT bad. Lots of the advice sounded like it came straight from a motivational Pinterest pin. “You’ll love your forties.” “You’ll look the best you’ve ever looked.” And my personal favorite, “Forty is the new 20.” Really? Forty is the new 20? I must take issue with this one – because, honestly, 40 is not anything like 20. 40

Voice At 20, I was in college, taking naps in the middle of the day, staying out all night, drinking copious amounts of alcohol, chain smoking cigarettes and well, ahem, other items. I swore I would never work with computers. I would live my life as a performing artist. I did not understand why my college was forcing me to have an email address that consisted of just a bunch of letters and numbers that no one, except maybe Rain Man, could remember – and I was never going to check it anyway. I despised the idea of those new fangled cellular phones, because I did not want people to be able to track me down any time of day. And quite honestly, even though I live and breathe by my phone now, I still don’t like idea that people can track me down anytime. I know I can put it on silent, it’s permanently on silent, but I have to check it eventually. Back then, if I left the house, I’d simply leave a note saying where I’d gone, or maybe I wouldn’t, and they would just have to wonder, but they certainly couldn’t just call and find me. I am wistful for the days when I only had a phone plugged into the wall and no answering machine. If you called and I wasn’t there then too damn bad for both of us, or perhaps just too damn bad for you. I didn’t want to talk to you anyway. I know this is a cliché attitude we’ve all heard a million times, but we’ve heard it a million times because it’s true! We’re all too connected for crying out loud! At 40, I cannot stay out drinking all night long and show up for work at 8 am as if I’ve just had a good eight hours of beauty rest. I cannot smoke cigarettes (because they’re going to kill me). I’m ten pounds heavier than I was back then (ok, we all know that’s a lie, but that’s the most I’m admitting to). I’m married with two kids, a mortgage, a pile of debt, mental illness (don’t act surprised, aren’t we all crazy?), two email addresses, a plethora of social media accounts and a full time job. I’m volunteering for WAY too many things all because I’m an idiot who can’t seem to say no to anything. Except PTA…I can’t stand PTA. I know that makes me a terrible parent, but…well, sorry, get off my back already. I can’t do everything, and those witches are downright judgmental (sorry to my wonderful friends who are active in the PTA and make my children’s school freaking awesome, but all your cute snack-making, carnival coordinating and crap just makes me feel like a big fat loser). Speaking of school, when have we, as a nation, decided that a leprechaun must visit every kindergarten room each St. Patrick’s Day and tear stuff up, pee green in the toilet and leave coins all over the place? As if that little annoying Elf on the Shelf isn’t bad enough? That green bastard didn’t visit anyone when I was a kid. They’re supposed to be sitting at the end of the rainbow guarding their flipping pot of gold, not knocking over chairs and tearing up perfectly good paper in kindergarten class rooms. I love my children’s kindergarten teacher, and I know this was not her idea. She’s forced into it because she can’t not do it when every other K class (I’m just going with K now because I’m tired of writing out the whole word) in the world is doing it. Then my child comes home wondering why the hell the leprechaun didn’t stop by our house? And we’re freaking Irish! We invented this crap and nowhere in my “how to be Irish handbook” does it say the leprechaun makes visits to your house to spread cheer and glee to children. Isn’t that Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy’s jobs? In fact, St. Patrick’s Day really has nothing to do with leprechauns at all. The truth is, according to religious theologians, and as cited in the Bible, and according to a various Vatican

resources, it is a high holy feast day that should be celebrated with reverence by knocking off work early and getting royally drunk. And as a good Irish Catholic girl (okay, middle aged woman), I abide by these rules stridently and with my head fully immersed in Guinness. Alright, I know that, as usual, I’ve gotten way off topic here so let’s get back on track. Forty is NOT twenty. It is TWENTY + TWENTY. My arse is tired. I work a full time job and take care of my children. And I don’t want this to turn into a big old fight between working mothers and stay-at- home moms, because, yes I’ve seen the bumper sticker, “Every mom is a working mom.” And it’s true, every mom is a working mom, and it is a full time job. But, if you’re a mom with a job outside the home – well then you’re a person working TWO full time jobs. And that’s incredibly exhausting. I don’t like to hear about how women who “choose” to stay home do so because they value their children more than a career or some such malarkey. I would love to have the “choice” to stay home. I cannot count the number of times I’ve dropped my children off at day care and sat in the parking lot crying my eyes out because I DO NOT HAVE THE LUXURY OF CHOICE. I do love my children more than my career, but staying home ain’t the hand I’ve been played. So, if I want to bitch about having too much to do and can’t make cutesy snacks and come to every flipping PTA meeting it’s because I’m working TWO FULL TIME JOBS! Again, sorry to my wonderful friends who are stay-at-home moms, you’re total rock stars, and I’m jealous as hell. Okay, again, back to being 40. It is definitely not the new 20. But, I do find I am much more comfortable with who I am and care less about what people think of me. That’s part of why I started writing. I was tired of hiding what I really thought for the sake of someone else. I can write about my life, insult, cuss and be my true self (who apparently has a major potty mouth). Who am I kidding? I still give a giant shit about what people think. I’m still crushed with every rejection. I’m still scared every time I publish a blog post of what people will think; if they’ll hate me, if they’ll decide I’m unworthy – you know, the regular. I still am unhappy with my 125 pound frame (shut the hell up right now, it’s true, it says so on my driver’s license). I still cry when someone I thought was a friend turns their back on me. A friend of mine was just telling me that if people do that then they’re not good enough to be my friend in the first place, but it still hurts. I’m striving to love myself more and appreciate each moment. (Alright, now I’m starting to cry – for heaven’s sake, why the hell am I awake?). I love my stretch marks and scars and see them as proof of a life where I’ve taken risks, lots of them, and I’ve survived. And hopefully, my stay-at-home mom friends and PTA rock stars will not hate me. I’m 40, I’m tired, and I can’t sleep. Cut me some slack.

When I was a mother-in-law-to-be the first time, I chose the first dress the saleslady showed me, even though I took my good pal with me to prevent me from doing that very thing. That day, I had planned to buy a champagne hued dress, aka beige. I ended up with fuchsia. It was stunning and fit great. No regrets. Therefore, this time, for the upcoming April nuptials of another son, I decided to trek back to the same shop with Laura again and search for another dress. Two days before my planned shopping spree, my buddy, Beth, over the phone said, “Wear that pink gown you wore before; it was lovely.” “I can’t do that,” I replied. “It’s in the photos from my other’s son’s wedding. Everyone will remember it!” Beth laughed. “I’m gonna wear the same dress for my second son’s wedding that I wore to the first.” “I wouldn’t do that,” I warned. “Then I’ll wear my long black gown.” “Black? I wouldn’t do that, either,” I stated. Beth laughed. She then asked, “What does your future daughter-in-law say about the dress you should wear?” “She told me to wear anything I want. She said she just wants me to be happy.” “Yeah, mine said the same thing,” Beth said. “So, I’m going to wear what I want.” “The difference between you and me is: When they say: ‘Wear anything,’ you believe them!” The next day I attended Bible Study and mentioned my upcoming dress shopping. I was prepared to drive all the way to Wendell, a good hour and a half distance, to the store where I’d bought my last

mother-of-the-groom gown two years ago. “Why do that?” a woman in our study group asked. “Dina Porter has lovely mother-of-the-groom dresses. It’s only fifteen minutes away.” So, that afternoon I redirected myself and headed to Chapel Hill to check out their clothes. Before I pulled into the mall, I phoned Connie, a pal in the area. She agreed to meet me. I entered the shop. A sales lady greeted me. After some preliminary chat, the sales gal queried me on the hues of the bridesmaids’ gowns and the color of the suits of the groomsmen. I told her a Bellini tint for the evening gowns and navy for the guys’ suits. “Bellini?” she inquired. “Like the drink. Peachy.” “I have just the thing!” She strode away and returned instantly with a layered, fuchsia dress – a doppelganger for the one I’d worn a year and a half ago to my other son’s wedding. I smiled and shook my head no. She looked perplexed. She asked, “Not your taste?” I told her why I was amused. At this

point, Connie showed up, and I related the uncanny coincidence. “That fuchsia evening gown you wore was perfect for you,” Connie said. The clerk returned with a similarly styled dress, only in turquoise. Instead of an accompanying scarf like my previous “m.o.g.” gown, this dress had a sheer jacket. “I’ll try it on,” I said. The piece didn’t wow me on the hanger. It was smaller than my usual size so I was certain I’d not be able to squeeze into it. I did, though. I walked out of the change room for the inspection. Connie and three salesclerks gawked. “Looks great!” one said. “That’s your style,” said another. “Except for maybe a little pulling up in the shoulders, it fits,” said the third. “You should get it!” said Connie. Déjà vu all over again. I looked in the mirror. The dress slenderized, complemented my complexion, and didn’t need hemming despite my short

Also, the price was reasonable: Much less than I expected to pay. “I should try on some more,” I said, “although I do like this one.” “Of course,” said the clerk, and within minutes they had hauled out five more dresses. I tried on a blue dress with a top and skirt ensemble. I walked out to where Connie sat. Connie shook her head sideways. The others looked glum. I glanced in the mirror and understood their long faces. Thumbs down, huh? I returned to the dressing room and changed into the light green one. I sauntered out. “The bodice doesn’t look right,” Connie said. The sales clerk added, “Because she has it on backwards.” I ducked back in my cubicle and turned it around 180 degrees and re-surfaced. “Not much better,” said Connie. I returned to the dressing room. I tried a gown with an Oriental theme, but the skirt didn’t zip so the gaping back ruled that one out. Next, I slipped on the purplish frock that I had admired on the rack. It had bunches of material folded to resemble roses, planted on various parts of the dress. I emerged. “What do you think?” I said, hopeful. Subsequently, I glanced down at my bosom and noticed that a couple of the rose petals were positioned in a strange place on the jacket and now jutted straight out, blooming. “Those roses look like pasties,” remarked Connie. The sales ladies smiled. “Don’t want everyone noticing that!” I said. “You’d be the talk of the wedding!” Connie said. I re-entered the fitting room for the umpteenth time and scanned the hangers. I hollered out, “I’ve tried them all.” “Slip on that first one again,” shouted a trio of voices. So, I reappeared in the blue ruffled gown with crystals trailing from various edges. I could see instantly as I studied my reflection that this dress outperformed the others. “That’s the best!” they clamored. “It’s the first one I tried on, just like last time.” “For my son’s wedding, I chose the first one I tried on,” said Connie. “Sometimes, you luck out the first time!” said a salesclerk. I thought to myself: Marriage is like that, too. Sometimes you know when it just feels right, and you just luck out the first time.

I slowly dressed, not wanting to go to or participate in the “Look Good, Feel Better” program dedicated to helping cancer patients feel better about changes in their appearance after chemotherapy and radiation. My oncologist kept suggesting that I try the program, as well as the breast cancer support group, until I decided to go just to get her off my back. To be honest, I was depressed, more like downright mad, and who wouldn’t be after being suddenly stripped of every strand of hair on your body. I didn’t mind the legs, the armpits and the bikini area, but my head, eyebrows and eyelashes took me to a whole other level of grief, distress and shock. I guess it showed, not only in my attitude, but in my appearance. Always particular in my dress and style, after losing my hair, feeling sick all the time and looking totally emaciated, I didn’t feel good, and I didn’t feel like looking good. I was embarrassed, and I simply stopped caring. In addition, with my bloated face and dark-circled eyes, I looked like a cartoon character with a stick body and a bowling ball head or like Uncle Fester’s female twin. I felt hideous. I walked into the office, signed in and took my seat next to a woman who looked much like me. After several other women arrived, we were escorted into a brightly lit, yet comfortable room where we hesitantly got acquainted with each other before our instructors arrived. The two women, whom we soon learned were hair and make-up stylists and, personally, I think comedians as well, walked in pulling a large cart full of different sized boxes behind them. “Good afternoon my sisters,” they cheerfully yelled before introducing themselves and asking us our names. Some of us answered, some of us didn’t and whether we answered or not, basically, we all felt the same way; whatever they were going to do, do it

and get it over with, we had pity parties to attend. They placed a small but completely filled box of make-up, nail polishes, false eyelashes, eyebrow stencils and beauty aids in front of each one of us and patiently, carefully and individually showed us how to properly apply all of it. And before we knew it, we were talking, laughing, helping each other and acting like high school girls who had known each other forever. After the make-up session ended, in-between their jokes and pep talks, our instructors placed another box in front us with scarves, turbans and hats, some for demonstrations and some to keep. They taught us how to tie, twist and wear them in different, cute styles where you couldn’t even tell we were

bald. Then came the real kicker, boxes full of hair strips, bangs, pieces, wigs and half wigs. We dug in the boxes like a bunch of kids opening up gifts on Christmas morning ,looking for our colors and textures. Then we learned how to place strips and pieces of hair under our scarves and hats to look like we had bangs and ponytails, with straight or curly hair hanging down the front, sides and the back of our heads. Before it was all over, every single one of us looked absolutely beautiful, sitting there talking and laughing, all made up with eyebrows, eyelashes and beautifully wrapped scarves, hats and hair that sent our confidence and self-esteem through the roof! We then sat there telling of our battles, showing our battle scars, confiding and exchanging addresses and phone numbers. One elderly lady didn’t hesitate to proudly show us her new, reconstructed, firm and pointed breast. I think most of us felt a twinge of jealously knowing ours were lop-sided, disfigured, hanging or missing, but glad to be alive and happy for her, we all had a hearty laugh. At first, we called each other sister but before the three hour program ended, we were acting like family, like a horde of young, beautiful, happy siblings. I couldn’t wait to get to my fiancée’s house. When he opened the door, he had to take a second look. I stood there bigheaded and laughing before he hugged me. He was exhilarated because I was so happy. That day was a turning point in my dress, style, health and attitude. I not only looked different, but I felt different, from that day to the present. Even though I had only had my fourth treatment, with eight more to go every twenty-one days, I think that was the first real day of my healing or at least, feeling good about myself, regardless. I was actually at the beginning of my journey, and there were plenty of bad days ahead of me, but the “woe is me” attitude was gone. It was mind over matter hard at work. I didn’t use my hair pieces after that day, and I still couldn’t put the eyelashes or eyebrows on straight, but I didn’t need to. I felt just as beautiful and good about myself without them. And I no longer felt so alone, misunderstood, unattractive and depressed. My sisters taught me to feel proud, blessed, happy and beautiful in the mist of, and in spite of my illness. And, after hearing some of the others’ stories, I certainly didn’t have a problem feeling that way. I learned to feel beautiful from the inside out and because of that, I looked good, and I began to feel even better.
