letter from the editor Being a new “empty-nester,” I find the road of my life has changed direction. The house stays clean, and no one wakes me up coming in late at night. I don’t ever have to cook, and grocery shopping is now a completely selfish task. Seeing my son so happy and engaged in school and his new life makes me happy and proud and, for the first time in many years, it really is all about me. As much as I love both of my children, I now trust them to know what’s best for their own lives. I honestly cannot remember the last time I felt I had a starring role in my own life. Change is in the air, and I’m kind of excited. Sasee is very fortunate to have so many wonderful writers submit their work for publication. Each month, I read dozens carefully crafted essays and wish we had room for more. My hat is off to these talented “Superstars.” Drop me a line – I’d love to know your favorites. Enjoy,

He shares a cell with a handsome and charismatic young soldier, Kolya, who has been detained for desertion charges. To escape from the bullet-tothe-head ritual faced by most prisoners, the colonel in charge gives the pair a shot at securing a dozen eggs for a wedding cake for his daughter’s upcoming nuptials. In a city cut off from supplies and suffering horrible deprivations, Lev and Kolya begin a journey of unspeakable horrors into the devastated countryside. The two form an unlikely pair, but manage to form a bond of tenderness and friendship through encounters with cannibals, peasant women kept by Nazi officers, a life or death chess match and a deadly female sniper. These are two characters you will always remember in a novel you will be so glad you read!

YGLTTC: You gotta love these texting codes! by Ann Ipock

I’ve got this crazy love/hate relationship with computers and all things 21st century/technical. Let me list a few: voice mail (which I call voice misery), camera (always missing something – the battery, the chip inside or the camera itself), cell phone (missing calls, erasing important messages, dropping one in a cup of coffee), passwords and numbers (is it my birthday, my anniversary, my maiden name or a combination of all three?) and banking online (pending for $1.00? – I thought my gas bill was $53.45?). I have friends and family who play games on their computer/laptop – but not me. (I’ve been told I’m not a “game player.” Oh, stop! You know what I mean.) Others play games on their iPhone or iPad – but I don’t own one and honestly, I’m not really in a hurry to get one. I will say that I’ve only been texting for a few months now. I don’t exactly have a problem with texting, but Oscar the Grouch does: Russell said he won’t pay for texting on our bill, and he simply commanded, “Don’t!” But I say at 10¢ per message, it’s no big deal. I spend so much time on the computer working: writing humor columns and other genres, researching for writing or studying the craft of writing, that when I get up from the computer, I’m “done-zo.” But my guilty pleasure if I DO indulge in extra time on the computer is reading and posting on Facebook. Before I got into Facebook, I tweeted for a while, but it was frustrating to me. Being a long-winded Southerner – you KNOW we preface almost everything that comes out of our mouth and use terms of endearment constantly – I couldn’t say what I wanted in 140 measly characters. For instance, “Honey, let me tell you what happened to me the other day,” is 56 characters. Now I only have 84 left. That’s nothing! I still blog occasionally, but in the back of my mind, I know writing a blog isn’t a good idea for me, per se. I figured out why: because I was writing what would be a column, as in, writing for Sasee (and others), writing books (three in print) and speaking about my writing. So, the more I think about it, maybe tweeting does make sense and is preferential over blogging. Oh, my goodness! See what I mean? Love/hate! But with all that said, I get a kick out of the texting codes and abbreviations. I got a message recently that gave the “middle age texting codes.” These are hysterical and though I DID NOT make them up, I added a few of my own at the end of this list: ATD: at the doctor. BFF: best friend fell. BTW: bring the wheelchair. BYOT: bring your own teeth. FWIW: forget where I was. GGPBL: gotta go, pacemaker battery low. GHA: got heartburn again. IMHO: is my hearing aid on? OMMR: on my massage recliner. ROFLACGU: rolling on floor laughing

and can’t get up. And finally, TTYL: talk to you louder. Then I cut and pasted the above to my Facebook status and heard so many variations that I DTWATIS: decided to write about this in Sasee. AYR: are you ready? And by the way, since some people predict books are on the way out (I HOPE NOT!) and Kindle, Nook and other e-readers are taking over the world, maybe we better all learn this crazy-shorthand-phonics-lazy-form-ofcommunicating. Here’s my complete list: WAI: where am I? HDIGH: how did I get here? WDIC: why did I come? HAIGOOH: how am I getting out of here? WAIG: where am I going? And finally, WAIL: when am I leaving? And a few very personal ones: NAMAP: need a manicure and pedicure. MRAS: my roots are showing. ICYC: I cook, you clean. YGLTTC: HNCTE: headache, not cooking tonight, etc. WWSMW: who wants some more wine? This last one’s from Niecy Nash, doing a parody of Nene from “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Later, on Facebook, some super-cool friends wrote a bunch more and these are priceless: WDYS: what did you say? MBID: my butt is dragging! WDICIHA: what did I come in here after? DYKM: do you know me? DIKY: do I know you? YPAKM: you people are killing me. WDIP: where did I park? WAMK: where are my keys? HYA: how y’all are? HYD: how ya durrin’? So there’s my list. After you read this, friend me and send me a few of your text codes ASAP. (I think you know that one.)

The Singer in the Band by Sue Mayfield Geiger

I used to be a singer. I wore long, slinky dresses and rhinestone earrings. I sang blues and jazz to a smoky room full of patrons who drank Cutty Sark and Jack Daniels. The club was called the Backstage, and it was on the corner of Main and Holcombe, tucked away in the inside pocket of a shopping center. I shared the bill with the Bobby Doyle Trio, three guys who sang vocals and also played piano, bass and drums. The bass player with the trio was Kenny Rogers (yes, the Kenny Rogers) who finally got smart, left Houston and became a household name. A few years later, a performer by the name of Willie Nelson was booked into the Tidelands on Main Street because he wasn’t big enough to draw a crowd at the Houston Rodeo. Marty Robbins got booked there instead. Of course, Willie went on to become an even bigger household name. I didn’t, however. My singing career lasted about two years. After the Backstage, I moved to Florida and sang with a three-piece band known as The Statesmen. After eight months, I returned to Texas and sang at a few more spots before deciding that the nightlife really wasn’t for me. I eventually married, had children and lived happily ever after. But, every now and then, I wonder, what would have happened had I had the perseverance of Kenny and Willie? They certainly gave their careers a lot more than two years. They spent decades climbing the ladder, falling down, getting back up again, and it finally paid off. Subsequently, both of them became super stars and made a tremendous impact on the music industry. I didn’t, however. I used to ask myself, did I quit too soon? Should I have been more brazen? Should I have moved to L.A.? I met a lot of influential people – record

14 www.sasee.com

execs, promotional types, etc. I even made my very own demo tape and sent it out to several recording studios. Some wrote back; most didn’t. “Nice voice, but not what we’re looking for,” they’d say. I remember my sons’ reaction when they discovered that tape years later and played it for the first time. “Ghastly! What kind of beat is that? Great voice, mom, but those tunes are from the dark ages.” What did they know? They grew up listening to heavy metal groups who were a cross between a vampire and Bozo the Clown (think “Kiss”). When they were babies, the only thing that stopped their crying was my crooning “Embraceable You,” “Blue Moon,” “Star Dust” and “When Sunny Gets Blue.” I still sing once in a while. Of course, now with Karaoke everywhere, anyone can sing. You’ve got an entire recorded orchestra backing you, with lyric sheets or a television screen in front of you; a crowd cheering you on. Anybody can be a star. Recently, I did perform during Karaoke night at a local club. You take a number, write down the songs you’re going to sing, wait your turn, then get up on stage and knock ’em dead. There’s an overseer of sorts who adjusts the volume, and gets the crowd stirred up. Not to mention the TV screen displaying the lyrics like the New York Stock Exchange. It was okay, but way too mechanical. I’d much rather be standing next to a live piano player, with a warm spotlight on my face, while my gloved hand picks up a boxy microphone, and sing every tune – not from a television screen or lyric sheet, but from my heart, where all my songs live. After all, if you don’t know the words, why sing the song? I may not have made the bigtime, but I do know how to appreciate good music. Karaoke may be around for a while, but give me a shiny, black baby grand with a keyboardist who can work magic on the ivories, and I’m famous!

didn’t realize how selfish I was until my son was born last year. As it turns out, I really enjoy the luxury of a hot shower each day. I also like being able to drink an entire cup of coffee while it’s still hot. And, every now and then, it’s nice to get more than three consecutive hours of sleep. Who knew I was so self-centered?

There’s nothing like having a child to remind you that you are no longer the center of your own universe. I understand that now. Evan’s needs surpass mine on a daily basis. He eats first; he gets the first bath, and he decides when everyone else in the house will start the day. Most days, being number two doesn’t bother me a bit. But every now and then, I feel like I need to recharge. I must have some occasional “me” time. That is exactly how I was feeling back in June when my mom and I booked an overnight trip to Dover, Delaware. We left on a Thursday afternoon, had a quick dinner on the road, and arrived in Delaware right after sunset. Mom and I settled in to our hotel room and went downstairs to explore the casino. I found a slot machine that looked like fun, and then I ordered myself a drink. I had taken two sips when I noticed my cell phone vibrating inside my purse. The call was from my husband. “I’m so sorry to bother you,” Craig said softly. “The baby is burning up, and we are on the way to the hospital. He wouldn’t drink his bottle, and when I checked his temperature it was 102 degrees.” I didn’t know how to reply. I was so desperate to get away, to take a break. And now, my baby was sick, and I couldn’t do a thing for him. The situation made me feel so incredibly helpless. “I don’t know what to do,” I told him. “I’m five hours from home!” “I know,” my husband said. “You can’t help that. I’ll call you when I know what’s wrong.” My husband and my father took the baby to the emergency room. Meanwhile, I searched the casino for my mom. Once I found her, we went to our hotel room and waited…and waited…for a phone call. Over an hour later, Craig called to tell me that the baby had bronchitis. He was on an antibiotic and already seemed to be feeling better. He was going to be just fine. After vowing to never go anywhere without the baby again, I got a couple hours of sleep so we would be prepared for the drive home the next morning. Once I returned home, the baby was already back to his typical, happy self. He was playing in his bounce seat and chewing on his toys. Still, I didn’t leave his side for several days. Ever since this incident, I have really struggled with the concept of “me” time. I tried to figure out why I needed a break from the child I wanted so badly and love so very much. Why did I need to get away from a baby who smiles when he sees me, laughs when I sing like Elmo, and turns his head towards my voice regardless of how many people are in the room? Well, maybe it was because that same beautiful child demands my undivided attention, requires constant supervision, and sometimes renders me completely exhausted when he screams like a screech monkey at all hours of the night. Sometimes I need to feel like a person and not just a bottle-making, diaper-changing, bath-giving, mommy machine. In recent months, I have taken some “me” time in small doses. My mom has kept the baby so I could grocery shop, take a nap and clean my house. On a couple of occasions, Craig and I went to dinner with friends. And this summer, I even managed to read an entire novel while the baby rested. It felt great to immerse myself in a different setting for a while. I’m still not ready to leave the baby overnight again or travel a long distance without him. It’s too soon and it makes me anxious. But I do give myself a break when I need it. It’s good for the baby and me. I remember when I first announced my pregnancy, a friend told me to do whatever I wanted while I could. “There is no “me” in mommy,” she said. Maybe there’s not. But, there is a “my.” And for now, I’m taking my time.

Crazy on the Inside by Diane Stark

‘poise,’ I would call my façade of sanity.” She shrugged. “Ask my husband. On the inside, I’m a fruit cake. I just don’t let many people see that side of me.” I grinned at her, glad to know that I wasn’t the only one who might be secretly certifiable. Over the next few weeks, Susan would bump into me around the building and ask me how I was doing. “Is it staying in today?” She’d ask, winking. On a good day, I’d say, “Yep, it’s only on the inside, where it belongs.” But on a bad day, I might say, “Help me, Susan! It’s leaking out!” We’d laugh, and no matter what else was going on, I’d feel better just knowing I wasn’t the only one who went a little crazy on stressful days. I loved having a friend who didn’t expect me to pretend to be fine when I felt like I was going nutty. And I especially loved that, according to Susan, being crazy on the inside was actually pretty normal, psychologically speaking. One morning, I discovered a small gift bag waiting on my desk at school. Inside was a little charm attached to a string. The charm had a bunny on it, who was going through an x-ray machine. The diagnosis read, “Crazy on the Inside.” I laughed and went to find my friend. I no longer work at the elementary school where Susan and I met, but we still call and email one another regularly with psychological updates. So far, we’re both keeping the crazy contained without the benefit of medication, and I tell her all the time that I have her to thank for that. There’s a saying that misery loves company. I guess crazy does too.

It hadn’t been a good day, and there was no sign of it getting better any time soon. As a first-year kindergarten teacher, I was scheduled to have my performance evaluation that day. Some time that day, but I didn’t know when. The principal was simply going to walk in, sit down and watch me teach for an hour. She was going to write down everything I did and critique me on my performance. And it was going to go in my permanent file. I was a competent teacher, and I knew that I would do OK. But today, of all days, one of my more challenging students (read: a little stinker) had decided to come to school sans Ritalin. So far that morning, he had given himself a hair cut with his green safety scissors, glued his ABC worksheet to his table and eaten pages 4-7 out of my copy of Green Eggs and Ham. So the day wasn’t going smoothly and knowing that the principal would soon bear witness to the chaos had left me feeling a little stressed. Truth be told, I was a basket case. Somehow, I made it through to” library time,” my only break of the day. When I delivered my class to the library, I warned the librarian that Dr. Seuss books were especially tasty that morning, and that she might want to keep an especially close eye on the aforementioned stinker. I made my students promise to behave and wished the librarian good luck. With a sigh of relief, I left the library and sneaked into the teacher’s lounge. I shoved some coins into the snack machine and punched the button for the most calorie-laden treat I could find. As I took my first bite, another teacher came in. “Oh, hey, Diane, how’s it going?” Susan asked. “Oh, my crazy’s coming out today,” I muttered without thinking. “What did you say?” She said, hiding a smirk. Clearly in some sugar-induced form of dementia, I repeated myself and then went on to explain, “Most days, I keep all the crazy inside, and no one can even tell that it’s there. But today, it’s coming out.” Instead of looking at me like the nut I clearly was, she laughed and hugged me. “We’re all crazy on the inside. Don’t worry about it.” “Not you. You’re so poised all the time. But when I get stressed, I’m a nut case in here.” I pointed at my temple and nodded emphatically. She laughed again. “Oh, no, you’ve got it all wrong. What you call

Thanks, by Alice Accardi It was big. It turns out it was 10 centimeters in diameter by the time it was removed. I rolled over in my sleep, moved my arm against my breast and found it. No monthly self-check, no mammogram needed; I just had to brush my arm against the lump, and it was impossible to deny its existence. The months that followed included that mammogram, a surgical biopsy, a mastectomy and three different reconstructive surgeries – then an unrelated thyroidectomy just to spice things up. They also included 30 consecutive radiation treatments, just in case the very rare Phyllodes tumor had somehow crossed the chest wall. Oh, and a pregnancy scare in the midst of those radiation treatments. And through it all, I somehow managed not to lose my mind. What’s my secret, you ask? How did a 51 year old mom of three, with a full time teaching job, manage not to go stark raving mad in the face of wondering whether her kids would grow up without a mom? Surprisingly enough, the answer can be found in the middle of Orlando, Florida, over a thousand miles from my home in New York. I threw myself into planning two consecutive trips to Disney World. I’m not a good sleeper when thing are going well. When my world started crashing down on me, sleep was pretty much a thing of the past. And when I couldn’t sleep in those quiet hours when the rest of the house was asleep, the

computer was a logical draw; one can only watch so many episodes of Three’s Company on late night TV. But instinctively I knew that researching breast cancer was NOT the way to go. I knew that I would find lots of facts and statistics, most of them terrifying. And that many of those facts and statistics would not apply to my very rare issue. Worse yet, even if they did, knowing the frightening facts would not make them go away. So researching breast cancer was out. What, then, to do, when even the chat boards were quiet? What else but plan a vacation? It sounds simplistic, I know. How on earth would information about Fast Passes and Deluxe Resorts possibly help? The answer is actually equally simplistic. I planned for a time when I would be better, for a time when things like Advance Dining Reservations would be important enough to merit my attention. Planning for our two trips to Disney World allowed me the chance to look beyond radiation and surgery, to a time when the black cloud hovering over my house would move on and life would return to normal. And that time would come of course – I had the reservations to prove it! And so I spent hour after hour, night after night, week after week, learning all any one human being could about a trip to Disney World. I became the resident expert, the font of knowledge on all things Disney. Need to know where to lodge your family of five? Not a problem. Need to know where to find a discount? Just ask. Want to know about touring plans or rope drop? I can point you in the right direction. Did I actually need all that information? Well, not to have a good time in Disney World. It’s almost hard NOT to have a good time in Disney. But, to preserve my sanity, to give me hope for brighter days and better health? Oh, yes, each and every tidbit of information was absolutely vital to my mental health. Each new detail gave me a desperately needed escape from fear, and absolute faith that a time would come when those details would actually matter. And so we went to Disney, not once but twice, and stayed in one of those deluxe resorts. All that hard earned knowledge helped make our trips even more wonderful than they might otherwise have been. But I’ll always treasure those trips, and the research behind them, for more than just a family vacation. They provided hope, a glimpse into a future I desperately needed to believe in. That Magic Kingdom was magic for me, long before I ever got onto the plane. It provided me with the magic of hope. Walt Disney once said: “If you can dream it, you can do it. Always remember that this whole thing started with a dream and a mouse.”

Parting Thoughts from the

Mother of the Bride by Cheryl Barker

The bills have been paid and the gown preserved. Favorite photos have been selected and placed in a keepsake album. My job as a mother of the bride now consists solely of storage responsibilities. Rose garland and other wedding décor currently reside in our guestroom closet while the top layer of the cake, until just recently, made its home in my freezer. But I’m not complaining. These storage duties are nothing compared to the months leading up to the wedding. The mother of the bride, however, is so much more than keeper of all things wedding related. Before my days as an MOB get too far behind me, allow me, if you will, to make a few general observations about these extraordinary women. After all, I’ve learned a lot about them in the past few years while teaming up with both my daughters as we navigated, and ultimately conquered, the course to their respective altars. The MOB looks like any ordinary woman, but don’t be fooled. She’s capable of far more than mere appearance may lead you to believe. No one can match her speed or stamina on marathon shopping expeditions, and the massive amounts of information stored in the forefront of her mind would fry the frontal lobes of those with lesser reservoirs of love and motivation. She’s nothing short of an organizational maven on steroids. No, nobody’s gonna mess up her baby’s wedding. But, while MOBs have lots of business to attend to, they also manage to have major fun while helping plan the biggest parties of their little girls’ lives. So in that spirit of fun that all MOBs possess, here are a few sure-fire ways to spot these supermoms in their natural habitat. They may even now be circulating in your midst! She might be an MOB if:

1. Her purse is home to an assortment of color swatches. 2. Her car’s GPS is permanently set to find the nearest Hobby Lobby. 3. Her spare bedroom, in fact, looks like Hobby Lobby threw up in it. 4. She feels the need to buy another bolt of tulle every time she leaves the house. 5. The latest decorating craze in her home seems to be yellow sticky notes. 6. Her eyes flash dollar signs every time she uses her credit card. 7. She uses her credit card every five minutes. 8. For every item she crosses off her list, she has to add three more. 9. She carries a notebook filled with enough plans to run a small country. And finally, she might be an MOB if…

10. Even after all the shopping she’s done for the wedding, she still goes on a quest to find one special wedding memento for her precious daughter and her new son.

So if you spot one of these special women out and about, give her a hug – or a piece of chocolate or a gift certificate for a massage or something. Believe me, she needs it!

Southern Snaps ESPN Host and Reporter, Wendi Nix: Proud of Her South Carolina Roots by Leslie Moore

Local sports fans will recognize the beautiful, blond ESPN reporter and host, Wendi Nix. What they might not know is Wendi grew up in Murrells Inlet and, if you listen very carefully, you still might hear just a touch of the south in her on-air remarks. Wendi’s friendly, positive outlook, along with her up-to-the-minute knowledge of professional and college sports, has made her a favorite of viewers tuning in to her commentary. Her contract with ESPN has just been renewed, and Wendi will be spending more time in the studio doing NFL and college football reporting. She graciously agreed to talk to Sasee and give us a little more insight into her life and work. “Growing up in Murrells Inlet was great,” remembers Wendi. “I’m a beach girl and would be perfectly happy to be on the Inlet or the beach 24 hours a day.” Typical of many teenagers along the Grand Strand, Wendi and her friends spent sunny days lying on the beach watching the local surfers. The beach and school activities, especially Friday night football games, were the hub of her social life as a student at Socastee High School. “I was exposed to a lot of different things at Socastee High School. You don’t know for sure that you’ve gotten a good education until you get out around other people and experiences. But, I’ve traveled around the country and met a lot of different people and never felt unprepared. I’m still a big proponent of public education.” After high school, Wendi attended Wofford College, graduating with a degree in French and Economics. “I chose a liberal arts education because I wanted to be well-rounded.” But, Wendi always knew she wanted to be a reporter. “During career day in the 5th grade a reporter came to school,

30 www.sasee.com

and I stalked her! We were supposed to go to three different sessions, but I stayed with her the entire day.” Wendy went on to say that today’s graduates are much more technically savvy than she was when she entered the business. “Now, the students know how to edit, shoot and understand all the latest technology. I learned to write and to communicate because I knew I would change as I got older. You never know how long you’re going to want to do something.” Sports were always a big part of Wendy’s life. Her father was a high school football coach and the entire family was involved in practices and games. “I was born on a Friday night, and my dad was coaching! Even after he left coaching, both of my parents went to my high school games. I am a big believer in involving girls in sports. It’s great for self-esteem and reducing the chance of teen pregnancy, as well as counteracting that feeling that they’re defined by their appearance.” After college, Wendi went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Sports Management from the University of MassachusettsAmherst and did an internship at a television station in Boston. Her first on-air position was with WPDE 15 in Myrtle Beach, where she reported the news and was able to fill in for the sportscaster. “It was like I was living a dream,” Wendi laughed. “This was the most wonderful job; I thought I had won the lottery. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited.” Before she was on-air at ESPN, Wendi was a viewer and was influenced by some of the great women sportscasters, like Robin Roberts, who now works for ABC’s Good Morning America. “I never knew any of them personally until I went to work at ESPN,” she remembers, “but they let me know

october

that it can be done. During each stage of my career someone has given me a shot, even though I wasn’t sure I was quite ready – those people are so important; you can’t get experience without actually doing it.” Being a celebrity has it downside; just search anyone famous on the internet, and you’ll find pages of doctored photos, off color comments, etc. I asked Wendi how she felt about some of the less than flattering information posted about her, and she told me she doesn’t read any of it. “Eventually, you have to decide that you’re comfortable in your own skin. For the most part I just tune it out. I make sure I’m comfortable with the choices I’m making and, it’s important to me that any young person watching be comfortable with what they see me say and do.” Wendy’s typical day starts eight or nine hours before the actual show goes on the air, and she told me one of her favorite things about her work is that there really isn’t such a thing as a typical day! “We meet and brainstorm first thing. After we come up with a plan for the show, we catch up on what’s happening then come back together and start writing the show. Our day is almost done by the time we start doing the actual broadcast. Information cycles are so short now that it’s a struggle to stay on top of everything. I have to constantly watch, even on my days off.” I just had to ask Wendi the locker room question, and she told me that it was all she knew, really, and rarely thought anything about it. Her skill and knowledge are what’s truly important, and she and the players she interviews mostly forget that she’s a woman in a men’s locker room. Our community loves sports and our local teams, and I asked Wendi’s

opinion about a couple of favorites. “The Gamecocks have a great baseball team – they are a powerhouse team with some remarkable talent. South Carolina’s team is the premier program in the country right now.” Wendi also feels that the Gamecocks’ football team has stepped up and made some real progress. “I almost feel like they’ll have a good season, but know that I’m notorious for making bad predictions!” Also, our own Chanticleers baseball team has also caught Wendi’s attention. “Without the same resources as the larger teams, they’ve really done great. The area and the region are attractive and are noticed by a lot of northern kids who would love to go to school at the beach.” Blessed with beauty as well as brains, I asked Wendi how she stays fit and attractive. She laughed and told me she spends a lot of time running to catch planes, but this sports-minded woman loves being active and plays golf and runs often. “I also love kayaking and hiking, but I have a short attention span and have to change it up.” Living in cold country has given Wendi a new love for winter sports as well. I expected Wendi to tell me about extensive beauty regimes, but she doesn’t really do anything special. “I spend a lot of time in the fresh air; I have a beach house in New England where I spend as much time as I can. In general I’m happy and that seems to help me look my best, but a little concealer doesn’t hurt either!” Like most of us, Wendi does love shoes. “I want to kick down the glass ceiling, but I do not have to do it in ugly shoes!” During rare times off, Wendi loves to travel. “Greece is one of my favorite places in the world.” But, she is proud of her roots. “I have never felt limited by coming from the South. It’s home and that will never change.”

It’s My Time by Francine Garson

34 www.sasee.com

The years of changing diapers, easing little hurts with band-aids and kisses, and checking math homework, are over for me. My adult children are self-supporting college graduates. Yahoo! We speak often, and I feel welcomed and included in their very busy lives. I love them, and I like them too. Working part-time allows me the freedom to write, read and take piano lessons, because I want to this time around. I am married to a wonderful man whose biggest fault is loud snoring, and a twenty dollar investment in a white noise machine has made even that tolerable. I have a heady sense of newfound freedom and an exciting notion that a new chapter in my life, one that will be written by me, is about to begin. Yes, it’s my time. Finally. Now.

But along with my exhilarating all-things-are-possible outlook, an unwanted guest has arrived. I did know that he/she/it would be coming. Yet I didn’t prepare and ignored the signs of its impending arrival. My own plans and wishes have become irrelevant. An uninvited alien called menopause has taken up residence in my previously predictable and dependable body. As a younger woman, I scoffed at an aunt’s complaints of violent hot flashes. Violent? How could a change in body temperature be called violent? But as I now know, the sudden explosion of a furnace-like heat that begins deep within my chest and spreads to my scalp leaving me red-faced and helpless is fierce, savage and certainly violent. And although red and gold leaves drift

to the ground, I keep a small desk fan at work and wear tank tops at home. I must apologize to my aunt… A night of uninterrupted sleep is another casualty of menopause. Sudden rises in body temperature, leg cramps and a general insomnia are my nightly companions. I’ve tried to look at these extra hours of wakefulness as a gift of time. I could read, write or clean the house (well, maybe not that). However, I’ve found a huge difference between an inability to sleep and the energized feeling of being awake. So as I shift position and gaze at the bedside clock flashing 4:00 am, I’m not tempted by the last twenty pages of a novel, the notebook on my night table or the unwashed kitchen floor. I just want to SLEEP! And in what feels like mere moments after sleep finally does come, my unfailingly accurate alarm clock announces the arrival of a new day. “Wake up,” I bark at my husband and push my face into my crumpled pillow. So my uninvited guest has brought hot flashes, leg cramps, and insomnia to the formerly reliable and well-run home that my body has been. Of course I know that aging brings physical changes. I take an occasional Advil for the touch of arthritis that nags at my shoulder and pull out my reading glasses at restaurants. Chicken sorrentino or scarpariello? However, during any of the sometimes dramatic bodily transformations from puberty to pregnancy that I’ve experienced, I’ve always recognized myself. When my body morphed from that of a girl to a woman, I was still inside. When the gentle curve of my pre-pregnancy belly took on watermelon-like proportions, I was still in there. But in addition to playing some not-so-amusing games with my body, the menopause-alien has invaded my brain. Whether in the classroom, during a game of Trivial Pursuit or when asked for the twelve-ingredient recipe for my mother’s lasagna, I have always

been able to rely upon my infallible memory. Other people conducted frantic searches for misplaced keys and routinely apologized for forgotten birthdays. Not me. I remembered where things were, what needed to be done and who had to be called. But all of that has changed. “Francine, you left the garage door open.” “Mom, I’m waiting at the train station. Where are you?” “Mrs. Garson, this is Dr. Nelson’s office. You failed to show up for your dental appointment.” But I still remember the name of my fifth grade teacher… Even more troubling than my short-term memory loss is the erratic pendulum that now controls my emotional state. My eyes fill when my husband calls my broccoli soufflé “a little dry.” A missing sock hidden somewhere within a folded stack of towels makes me shake with frustration, and a dropped water glass causes me to scream. When my call to an airline is answered with “All operators are assisting other customers,” I slam down the phone.

Then I take some deep breaths and repeat again and again…” It’s my time. It’s my time. Alien, go home!”

It’s kind of a spiritual, meditation time.” Journaling is another one of Vicki’s favorite ways to unwind. “When a problem flows out of my hand onto the paper it seems to just go away.” When a true indulgence is called for, Vicki heads to Baskin Robbins for a pistachio almond ice cream cone! Vicki went to work with her husband after they were married, but taught school for fourteen years after her children were born. Five years ago, Vicki went back to work for Butler’s Electric and loves it! “We have great people working here, and I enjoy the interaction with customers and helping them find what they want.”

It was easy to hear the joy in Selena Camp’s voice when she told me her favorite way to take time for herself. “I spend time with my fiancée! He lives in Aiken, and both of us have businesses, so we get together whenever we can. I didn’t think I’d find love again after I lost my husband, but I did—he’s a wonderful man!” Researching everything from new shoe lines to the latest popular novel is how the busy owner of Island Shoes deals with stress. “I can sit at the computer for hours, reading whatever piques my interest.” A caring friend, Selena feels she is best at providing a listening ear. “People do what they do for a reason, and I don’t make judgments.” From age 10, when she slipped on her first pair of Jack Rogers sandals, Selena has loved shoes. “I would eat PBJs and save my money for shoes,” she laughed. “I was approached about opening a shoe store in the Hammock Shops and was very fortunate to have a mentor who helped me. I love it—this is my passion. I can’t imagine doing anything else!”

Kidless & Content by Cynthia A. Lovely

ut of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of the long lethal needle. Averting my gaze, I fought a wave of panic. It was too late to turn back. The needle had already been injected into my fragile flesh causing a faint numbness to steal over my body. As the panic receded, I welcomed the numbness from the shot. It would alleviate the pain and discomfort of the present necessary medical procedure. Necessary if I wanted to discover the reasons for my thus far infertile condition. Minor surgery and numerous tests still had not pinpointed the problem. I was weary of the challenge and unwilling to go much further. Afterwards, my husband and I sat in the medical office waiting to hear the latest report. Sensing a moment of decision, he reached over to hold my hand. The Doctor breezed back into the office in all her professional demeanor with her clipboard at the ready. To this day I’m not sure of all the medical jargon and textbook terms that were discussed in that office. But the end result was clear. Too many negatives, risks and uncertainties factored into our final decision to remain childless. Ironically, the day I gave up the dream of having a child, I relinquished my own child-like belief in demanding that life give me exactly what I desired. My grown-up journey had begun. It didn’t happen overnight but it started at that crucial point of resolution. The next step was to make the best out of the situation. The fact that I had a caring and supportive husband made all the difference. We determined

october

that our love for one another was solid and sure; we would protect and cherish it above all else. Watching friends and acquaintances struggle through the troubling seas of infertility, with an unrelenting insistence to produce a child, was an eye-opening experience. They became burdened with stress, obsessive behaviors and an unhealthy outlook. Sadly, a few were contemplating divorce proceedings. The main goal in their lives had been reduced to creating a child no matter the cost to their own relationship. After viewing these circumstances we arrived at the same satisfying conclusion. I didn’t marry my spouse because I thought he would be a wonderful father some day. I fell in love with the single male who was gentle, compassionate, fun to be with and who could make my toes curl with just a wink. He didn’t marry me dreaming of the sweet little mother I would be to his offspring. He fell in love with “an innocent, pretty blonde with a strong sense of integrity, a caring manner and an unexpected spunky attitude behind the shy appearance.” Two is the perfect number for our marriage. We are smart enough not to question this fact. Of course, the journey has been interesting as we navigate the murky waters of childless couples vs. couples with children. Constantly we veer away from discussions on bottle feedings, pregnancy war stories or grandchildren escapades. We gravitate naturally towards other couples without children. Does this mean we avoid couples with offspring? Not at all. It is interesting to note that our closest friends do have children. They have accepted and invited us into their family activities and events. They enjoy our adult conversation and friendship. We love being included as part of their family. We treasure these special friendships. My husband and I have chosen to focus on the positive aspects of no children. Instead of bemoaning the fact, cringing at the scent of baby powder or fleeing from the joy of the newly pregnant – we smile, congratulate them with sincerity and move on. Rather than completely avoiding any children, we enjoy being an aunt and uncle and even an adopted aunt and uncle to close friends. As I grow older, I do admit to a sense of freedom and relief on returning home to a quiet child-free refuge after spending a lot of time with rambunctious mini-people. Other pros include no worries about college costs, adult children’s poor life choices or the threat of turning into overactive grandparents with constant babysitting responsibilities. Through this maturing process I respect the choices of others. I hope for the same respect in return. I am not to be pitied. I do not feel unfulfilled. Have I ever wondered what it would have been like with a child? Yes. I willingly released the dream of a little girl with blonde curls and the easygoing disposition of her father with perhaps her mother’s sassy attitude. It wasn’t part of the master plan. I accept that. It has been said that when life hands you lemons, make lemonade. When life hands me lemons, I’m gifting them to a busy neighbor with six kids. The children will be sure to enjoy the lemonade treat. Then I’ll head off to the best dessert place in town, overdose on a Death by Chocolate creation and toast to the good life with my husband. God has blessed me with a man I treasure, a country home in beautiful upstate New York, the time and ability to pursue my dream of a writing career, beloved friends and family and a deep rooted faith in wisdom higher than my own. I’ve learned to appreciate the blessings that I have and not waste time or energy on wishes that won’t happen.

I am kidless. I am content.

Somebody by Susan Traugh

I was at yet another business function for my husband, Steven, when a woman we know sidled up between us. A colleague of his, she wore her Ph.D. like body armor while her tongue shot poison arrows – and I was her favorite target. Loyal Steven instantly began to brag about my new book agent. “What?” exclaimed the woman as she spun to look at me – maybe for the first time – “I didn’t realize you were somebody!” So, there it was: invisibility. In the next days, her comment was all I could think about. I wanted to make her wrong. But, I couldn’t. I couldn’t because, despite what she said, I was the one who had made me invisible. I was the one who allowed my stardom to be clouded over. As a wife and mother of three disabled kids, an enormous amount of my energy is spent just keeping our lives afloat. Because of the kids’ unpredictable needs, I can’t work outside of the home. My writing is vital to paying the bills while still allowing me to run to the hospital, school or doctors as needed. But, while I don’t work outside the home – I do work. And I have dozens of published works to prove it. Yet, everyone knows me as “Steve’s wife,” or “Katie’s mom.” Nobody sees me as a writer because nobody sees me write. My books sit on the shelf or in the boxes that they came in because I don’t share them. While my peers hold book signing parties, I turn from the spotlight. While others announce on Facebook or blogs, I keep quiet. I write while the kids are gone or in the middle of the night. I take my manuscript to the hospital while I wait. And, I’m chair of too many committees, volunteer for too many events, and take on too many projects because I don’t honor the writing I do as “real work.” Despite contracts and deadlines, I vacuum, help with homework and run carpools first. I drop everything to do the mundane because I feel like I owe everybody but me. Then, I panic in the night and work until two am. I watch as writers with less experience and no better skills teach the classes that I could easily teach and garner long lines of devotees while I anonymously walk the aisles. I’m not alone here. My circle includes many accomplished, talented people in varied professions. And yet, every one of them can relate to my haunting question: “Am I an imposter?” Why is it that we women always question if we’re good enough? Why is it that, instead of giving ourselves “attagirls” for the hundred problems we solved today, we admonish ourselves for the one we didn’t get to? I’m GOOD at writing. I’ve known for a long time that I have a gift of

reaching kids that are hard to reach. I’ve even won awards for that gift. I can also write essays, articles and stories. And, my bet is that you’re good at myriad things, too. Maybe you’re the expert in your department at work. Maybe you can clean your house faster and more efficiently than any Mighty Maid service ever could. Maybe your lemon squares are to die for. Why is it, then, that some little voice in us says that we’re not good enough unless we do…whatever? What is it about me – about us – that makes “yeah, but…” so much a part of our personal assessment that we shy away from our own stardom and sink into the shadows of invisibility? That woman didn’t know I was “somebody” because I didn’t let her know. She defined me as “Steven’s wife” because I didn’t define myself any other way. I was invisible because I made myself invisible. As I pull her poison arrow out of my heart, I realize that her barb has infused me with a new kind of strength. It’s time I step up. It’s time I stop being invisible and step into the spotlight of my life. Women tend to be the great supporters of the world. But, we need to support ourselves. What does it say about us if we grow up only to be someone else’s shadow? How do we teach our kids self-respect and the depth of their true worth if we treat ourselves as unworthy of that same care and respect? As I lay her arrow aside, I have decided to use it as a laser to point my way. At home, I’ve made my kids start doing their laundry and cooking dinner, for my family needs to define me as someone other than their housekeeper. I can no longer attend solely to their needs, and they cannot ignore mine. Support needs to flow both ways in our household. I’ve started my own blog and begun posting monthly essays which I’m compiling into a book. I’ve self-published a special education curriculum and am getting rave reviews from educators. My agent is pushing my biography series, and I’m putting myself out there…and stepping into the light. For each of us, that spotlight is right there, waiting for us to simply move over and step in. We just have to declare that we’re worth it. As I step out of the shadows, this new phase of my career is still unclear. I’m feeling my way, step by step, out of the wings and onto center stage as the star of my life. With each step, I’m hoping that my confidence builds as my platform does. But, however it turns out, I’ve taken charge. I’ve made a statement about who I am as a writer and a woman. I’ve stepped out of my invisibility to declare, not that I will be somebody, but rather that I am somebody.

gets candid

Meet Dr. N. Craig Brackett, III

general surgery, but no one was tackling breast cancer. Each day is a test, and at the end of the day I want to go home knowing I gave the right advice and did a good job. There’s no room for arrogance in this business – that’s how people die. At Coastal Carolina Breast Center, we see everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Programs are available to ensure that very woman can get a mammogram and treatment, but we still need to work toward better and more affordable care. I trained to be a doctor – not to treat one person over another who has a better insurance plan. It doesn’t cost me anything but my time to do your operation. Tell us a little about your personal life. Amy and I have been happily married for 26 years and have three children. Ben is 20 and Katie is 18 – both are students at Clemson. Will, our youngest, is 9 years old. I enjoy my family – when the older ones were younger I was busy studying and learning – this was the early 2000s and things were changing monthly. Now I can sit back and relax a little.

Medical Director of Georgetown Hospital System’s Breast Health Program, Dr. Craig Brackett is not your stereotypical surgeon. His team at Coastal Carolina Breast Center is the only one of its kind in our area; one of only eight programs in the state accredited by NAPBC (National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers) and was the third in the state to do needle biopsies. This type of cutting edge care is not typically found in small communities like ours, but Dr. Brackett’s passion and dedication have made this center a lifesaving reality for women with not only breast cancer, but all diseases of the breast. Most importantly, Dr. Brackett is a true healer – his genuine kindness and compassion instills the kind of confidence in his patients that facilitates recovery. Dr. Brackett, please tell us about your work with Coastal Carolina Breast Center. One of our primary goals is education. We don’t approach breast cancer with fear; the majority of cancers can be cured. Actually most of women I see don’t have cancer, but they’re all scared when they come in. Studies show that 70% of women with breast cancer are treated in their community, so we want to be able to offer university level care. Our team sees patients from Florence to Awendaw to the southern part of North Carolina. Great changes for the better in breast cancer treatment have occurring during the last 10-15 years. Today, our multi-disciplinary team meets to decide the best possible treatment for each individual patient – all women are different. And, each member of our team wants to be the very best at what they do; I spend many of my vacations sitting in conference rooms learning more. This is an amazing group of people; we work together like a big, happy family. We realize that telling a woman she has breast cancer is a big deal. I know I have to cure the cancer not only in the body, but in the mind as well. It’s important for your readers to know that nearly 70% of breast cancer patients have no family history – actually only 5-10% of breast cancers are from hereditary causes. I do a lot of public speaking locally and regionally to help educate the public about this disease. This is how I was called to serve. I pray every time I stand at the scrub sink because I realize that I’m not the one in charge. Sometimes I miss doing

44 www.sasee.com

We grill out a lot when the weather is nice, and I do enjoy a beer with the occasional cigar! My workouts include bike riding and lifting weights. I love my church – All Saints – where we are all active members. My youngest is a baseball whiz, and I go to his games and have co-coached his team. We all love sports. Any last thoughts for our readers? We, as doctors, don’t know everything. The power is in your hands: ask questions, know your risk factors and keep searching until you find your answer. Do. Not. Be. Afraid. Contact Coastal Carolina Breast Center at 843-651-3308.
