The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art: One Man’s Vision Becomes Regional Event Within the evolution of every successful ongoing music and arts festival, there must be a force moving it towards success. For Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art, that force was Dr. Lee Minton, humanist and lover of the arts who was never content to simply take his place in the audience and listen. Dr. Minton organized the Minton Foundation in 1977, funded it, set its course and it has continued since his death in 2002.

Our Mission

The Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create and enhance cultural awareness and enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors by providing quality performances, programs, and educational opportunities in music and the arts. The Festival Board members, staff and volunteers are committed to the mission of the Festival and will competently, ethically and responsibly act in the best interest of achieving the organization’s mission at all times.

Our Values

We believe in the value of the arts as an essential part of civilization and in its role of preserving accomplishments of humanity. We believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to be exposed to the arts and that PIFMA has a significant role and responsibility to the community in supporting the growth and development of the people we serve and in enhancing their quality of life by furthering their equality of opportunity to the arts. 8

At the young age of 50, Dr. Minton retired from his medical practice as an Ophthalmologist in Nashville, Tennessee, and bought a home on Pawleys Island. In 1991, the Festival of Music & Art at Pawleys Island began as a single performance under the watchful eye of Dr. Minton. A program at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pawleys Island was organized and sponsored entirely by Dr. Minton and the Minton Foundation. “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, A Little Night Music” received such an overwhelming positive response that a second event was held in 1992. John Nelson, noted American conductor, led a program at All Saints Episcopal church called “Music of Praise.” On the evening prior, a program of Baroque and Romantic music was performed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. And so began the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art. From its humble beginnings, PIFMA has grown to a significant regional cultural event covering all genres of music and visual arts. Now overseen by an impressive Board of Directors guided by the vision and perseverance of one man – Dr. Lee Minton – PIFMA continues to evolve. His dream has become the dream of a united community – to create and enhance cultural awareness and enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors by providing quality performances, programs and educational opportunities in music and the arts. In 2002, after an extended period of illness and medical treatments, Dr. Minton passed, but his vision continues to inspire others who have kept his dream alive. This visionary man will long be remembered by the many musicians, protégés, artists, dancers, orchestra members, fellow directors and audience members whose lives he personally touched. Rarely has the Pawleys Island community had such a friend of the cultural arts and who has left such a lasting impact on its citizens.

ROOTED IN THE CAROLINAS and

ROOTING FOR THE CAROLINAS

Other stores work hard to sell you local this or local that, hoping no one notices they are owned by a ginormous corporation from who knows where. But we are truly your home grown, Carolinas-based grocery store. Since 1954, we’ve been the place where locals shop local. That’s more than starting a trend - it’s setting the standard.

2017 Commemorative Print Celia Wester has emerged as the winner of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art poster contest. In a piece entitled “Sound Explosion”, Celia captures the essence of the Festival and all the excitement that it brings through performance and visual arts to the Lowcountry. A colorful saxophone and keyboard are the central images with the appearance of sound floating through the air. A Charlotte, NC native who now calls Georgetown, SC home, Celia enjoys painting with colors that reflect local scenery. Color, texture and patterns are woven throughout her subject matter. “My objective is to create a greater awareness of all that is around us and to ensure that no one miss the flower for a view of the garden,” she said. Celia’s artistic career began as an illustrator and designer for a corporate display company. In 1990 and continuing until 2001, she operated her own business specializing in murals, structural exhibits and faux finishes for corporate, residential and celebrity clients throughout the Southeast. Recognized for her versatile style and use of detailed imagery and vivid color, Wester has been featured in a number of publications and her work is on display in homes and galleries throughout the US. Her fine art can be viewed at Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC, Prince George Framing in Georgetown, SC and Island Art Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC. “Each year the selection of a winner becomes more difficult,” said Executive Director, Delores Blount. “Our entire committee was impressed with Celia’s work. “Sound Explosion” not only represents the Lowcountry, it conveys the fun and excitement associated with the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art.” To see more of Celia’s artwork: cwesterstudio.com and on instagram: @cwesterstudio.

Kathryn Bryan Metts Scholarship Winner The Kathryn Bryan Metts Scholarship, founded in 2010 and presented annually, is available to upper-level (junior, senior or graduate) students who are a native or current resident of Georgetown County, SC, or Alamance County, NC, and who are specializing in painting and/or drawing at a post-secondary institution. This year’s recipient, Ramsey Diven, is a rising junior at Coastal Carolina University whose passion for art developed at a young age. Diven grew up in the small town of Sanford, NC, where she attended Lee County High School. After losing some important people in her life Diven became more serious about pursuing her dreams of becoming a fine artist. Diven creates artwork as a way of expression and she hopes people can see her interests, emotions, opinions, and her inner personality through her art. The scholarship honors the much loved and widely collected artist, Kathy Metts, a Georgetown resident and UNC graduate, whose love of the Lowcountry was often reflected in her colorful paintings of Pawleys Island and Brookgreen Gardens. “Her paintings reflect her exceptional talent, her sense of whimsy, and her excitement for life and family,” said Festival Director, Delores Blount. Metts’ abbreviated life and career ended in 2006 following a bout with cancer. The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art is recognized as an advocate for promoting the arts among youth. The Kathryn Bryan Metts Visual Arts Scholarship represents the first scholarship that the Festival has ever endorsed.

Chalk Walk

Located at Francis Marion Park, Georgetown

The Italian tradition of Street painting dates to the 16th century when artists would travel from town to town for religious festivals and transform the streets and public squares into temporary galleries for their works. The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art brings this event to the Lowcountry as a way to teach and promote the history of this lost art to all ages and levels of artists. The Chalk Walk provides a wonderful way for people in the community to share a great experience together.

Delbert McClinton

Performance: Saturday, October 7th at 7:00pm Tickets $30 • $45 • $85

Multi-Grammy Award Winner, Delbert McClinton is “One of the Fortunate Few” who has managed to live his dreams for more than six decades. McClinton earned his first Grammy nomination in 1989 for “Live from Austin” and his first win in 1991 for his duet with Bonnie Raitt on “Good Man, Good Woman.” McClinton earned two more Grammys and topped the Billboard Blues chart with a series of albums in the 2000s, including “Nothing Personal,” “Cost of Living” and “Acquired Taste.” The music from his current album is new and fresh and maintains that Delbert McClinton signature. He easily describes what some struggle to define: “Call it blues or country rock or American roots or whatever, but one of the most important things about my songs continues to be that there is always a way out. Nothing I write spirals into the abyss. It’s all ‘I’ll be all right.’” 35

You’ve Got a Friend

Carole King & James Taylor Tribute Performance: Friday, October 13th at 7:00pm Tickets $25 • $35 • $45

In 2010 Carole King and James Taylor, two of the most celebrated singer-songwriters to ever hit the music scene, held their long awaited Live at the Troubadour reunion. It came as no surprise to anyone that Kirsti Manna and Jonathan Birchfield were so inspired by that concert that it compelled them to create a show based on this timeless music. Manna and Birchfield have years of touring, performing and writing between them. They have shared the stage with such artists as Brooks and Dunn, Ray Charles, Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and have appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. And now they are sharing the stage not only with each other, but with the songs of their musical mentors. “‘You’ve Got a Friend’ isn’t just a song title to us,” says Kirsti. “It’s our opportunity to pay homage to the music, the lyrics and the melodies that moved us to become songwriters and performers.”

Joe Gransden

“Songs of Sinatra & Friends” Performance: Friday, October 20th at 7:00pm Tickets $25 • $35 • $45

Renowned first for the hard bop approach of his trumpet, Gransden’s singing voice has been compared to that of Chet Baker and Frank Sinatra. His grandfather was a trumpeter of merit, playing professionally his whole life throughout New York. On his mother’s side of the family was the piano virtuoso Carmen Cavallero. Gransden’s CD “Close To My Heart,” produced by saxophone great Kenny G, is a collection of smooth jazz covers and originals written by Joe and Kenny. Joe has been performing with Kenny G and his band around the country for the past year or so. His brand new project entitled “Live At Cafe 290, It’s A Beautiful Thing” features Joe singing and playing with his 16 piece Big Band. The Joe Gransden 16 piece Big Band is one of the busiest groups on the jazz scene. 39

More Than Concerts – Keeping the Arts Alive in Georgetown County!

During the 2017 season the following artists will give outreach programs for Georgetown County students: • Artrageous will excite and entertain 300 5th graders! • Joe Gransden and several members of his band will perform for music students at Carvers Bay High School • Two outreach programs are planned for the Lee Minton Signature Series in the winter of 2018– with Matt Beilis and Zuill Bailey. • Fall 2018 outreach programs are already being planned! Performance Opportunities are also being given to the Plantersville Elementary Drum Line and Litchfield Dance Arts students.

The amazing Squonk Opera gave exciting arts and science workshops to 2,500 3rd-5th graders at Georgetown High School Auditorium.

Local ballerinas from Litchfield Dance Arts Academy dance for an appreciative audience in Georgetown, giving the students valuable performance opportunities!

Carvers Bay High School is a rural school with many students living below the poverty level, but these young people love music and have one of the best marching bands in the state. PIFMA provides annual arts workshops – here the amazing Annie Moses Band shows one student how much fun it is to play the violin! 44

Who knew the cello could be so much fun! Shana Tucker spent a few hours with Georgetown Middle School students playing, singing and sharing her love of the arts.

Our Georgetown County K-2nd graders were so excited to learn about drums and even got a chance to play an instrument during The Healing Force’s performance at Georgetown High School Auditorium.

Remembering Billy Cave

The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art lost a long time board member and supporter on August 22, 2017. Billy Furman Cave was a lover of the fine arts and devoted supporter of the arts in our community. Involved since the beginning, Billy worked with Lee Minton to get the fledging fine arts festival off the ground and continued his support until illness limited his involvement. We will remember him as the epitome of a southern gentleman, always gracious and kind. He never walked into a board meeting without a smile on his face and a funny quip or joke to tell. Godspeed Billy. And thank you for everything you have done for the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art. 45
