Behind the Scenes with Foy Ford, Manager of the Strand Theatre by Leslie Moore
Walking into the Strand Theatre, home of the Swamp Fox Players, on picturesque Front Street, in Georgetown, you immediately feel the magic and mystery of live theatre. The newly remodeled lobby is beautifully decorated in gold and black, with a lovely ornate chandelier and soft, lush, red-patterned carpet muffling any sounds from the street outside. The historic Strand Theatre was built in 1941 and operated as a movie theatre until its closing in the early 1970s. The theatre is a member of the League of Historic American Theaters and is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
32 www.sasee.com
The Swamp Fox Players were established in 1971, by Joe and Ann Israel, as a non-profit community theatre group. Prior to obtaining the Strand Theatre as their permanent home in 1982, the group performed at various venues throughout the community. I was welcomed by the theatre manager, Foy Ford. Petite, brunette and vivacious, Foy has been “running the show” for six years this month. And, it’s obvious she’s in the right place. “I just love this theatre,” she told me while showing me around the 210 seat venue. “And, the people I work with make it all worthwhile.” Being the manager of a community theatre troupe is not Foy’s first career. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Foy graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Radiological Science, a rarity at a time when most x-ray technicians only received an Associate’s Degree. After college, Foy married Joe Ford, a contractor, and worked in Columbia a year before moving to Pawleys Island. She then went to work for Georgetown Hospital, but when her oldest daughter, Randall, was born, the couple decided Foy should stay home and raise their daughter. To help out with the expenses of a growing family, Foy opened a day care in her home, caring for six children at a time. She did this for eleven years. “I never went anywhere,” Foy said laughing. “My big outing for the day was picking up the older children from Waccamaw Elementary School.” The years brought Foy and Joe another daughter, Kristen, and as the children grew, so did Foy’s career plans. After closing her day care, Foy began work as a teacher for a company called CompuChild. She moved around to twelve different schools, teaching computer skills to pre-schoolers. It was a fun job and gave Foy the flexibility to be at home when her daughters came in from school, something both she and Joe have always felt was important. Joe became involved with the Swamp Fox Players in the mid90s, volunteering his construction skills by helping build sets. Community theatre soon became a family passion. Foy helped out whenever she could and the entire family appeared in two plays through the years. Joe found he had a talent and love for acting, but Foy was

always more comfortable helping others shine in the spotlight. “The group talked Joe into becoming an actor, and he does a great job, but I have only taken those two small roles. I’m much better behind the scenes!” When the theatre manager position came open six years ago, Foy knew it was time for yet another change. Today she manages the finances, coordinates volunteers, handles public relations and publicity as well as arranging for day-to-day upkeep and maintenance. She works for a fifteenmember volunteer board of directors who meet monthly. “My position is only part-time, so I’m still able to be there when Kristen gets home from school, but I’m here every night during the plays.” Laughing, Foy adds that Kristen, now a high school senior at Waccamaw High School, is often the one who is not home after school! Today, four productions are staged each year. Foy is the only paid employee, and everyone else, from directors to actors to ushers, volunteers their time and talent because they love the excitement of live performance. This is a passionate group who feels the theatre adds something special to their community. Plays are chosen by the directors, usually because of a passion they feel for a particular work. A production board reads and approves each selection. “We want to give our audience a variety,” explains Foy. “And, we try to occasionally bring in the unexpected.” Actors typically rehearse three nights a week for seven weeks before each play, more for musicals and productions that require more pre-
cise timing. Until 2005, there was almost no backstage area, but a 1600 square foot addition gave the actors a green room, dressing rooms and a shop for constructing sets downstairs and a rehearsal area upstairs. During the past four years, theatre revenue has been reinvested into nearly a quarter million dollars of renovations. “Before the additions, the actors sometimes had to wait outside for their entrance,” Foy told me as we walked through the updated backstage area. In spite of intense rehearsals, in live theatre the unexpected often occurs. “You never know what’s going to happen,” said Foy while telling me about a few of the funny incidents known only to the actors and crew. In the play, Always…Patsy Cline, one scene involves a plane crash. During the dramatic crash, someone backstage dropped a heavy prop, making a huge bang, but it blended so well with the scene that no one in the audience knew it was a mistake. Another play included a scene on a bed that, unfortunately, had a loose bolt. The bed crashed to the floor while the actors were onstage. Undaunted, they kept going, albeit changing the scene a little! Each of the four annual plays runs for nine shows, which are usually fairly close to sold out. Many patrons of the theatre have been season ticket holders since the 1980s, with more new people coming each year. Foy knows how fortunate she is to live in a community that values the arts. “I am so appreciative of the support we receive from the community. We have managed to keep our ticket prices reasonable ($15 for plays, $18 for musicals), making live theatre affordable for most everyone.” Doubt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by John Patrick Shanley, begins its run on October 16 at the Strand. During our visit, Foy was already busy arranging the myriad of details involved in making sure everything is in place for this production. As we were leaving her newly renovated office, Foy excitedly shared with me some plans for future improvements. “We’re working on raising the money for new seats now, which is quite a big undertaking!” But, meanwhile, the show must go on!

Celebrates!
Sasee was honored to help celebrate a very special and unusual occasion recently – a 70th wedding anniversary! Mamie and Wayne Kearns, now 87 and 88 years old, were married on September 3, 1939, when they were only 17 and 18 years old. Mamie and Wayne live in an assisted living facility in Myrtle Beach where they celebrated their big day. Wayne enjoys telling the story of how he met his bride. “Mamie and I are both from High Point, N.C., and I was a member of the Methodist Church. Some friends of mine and I had heard that the Baptist Church had lots of pretty girls, so we decided to join the youth group there, which was held on Sunday nights. The first time I went, I saw her across the room and asked, ‘Who is that girl?’ A couple of Sundays later we met and dated all through high school.” Wayne had to get Mamie’s father’s permission to marry her, as she was only seventeen. After receiving it, he, Mamie and some friends traveled to Virginia for the wedding with less than ten dollars between them. After paying the high price of $4.75 for a hotel room, plus 75 cents for parking, they had very little money left for the trip home. The only thing they could afford was a loaf of bread and a jar of sandwich relish. The couple moved to Myrtle Beach in 1954 and began buying and operating vacation rental property. They eventually bought the Rivera Motel and ran it until their retirement. Today, they are surrounded by the love of three children, two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Happy Anniversary Mamie and Wayne!
