Live It & Dig It Yard Sales by Dee Orr
It’s here, prime-time yard-sale season. A time when dear friends of mine gear up for marathon treks up and down the Strand. Don’t misunderstand; they’re not just fair-weather shoppers. They have continued to train throughout the winter months. Champions I call them – dedicated yard hoppers! I, on the other hand, work myself into a total state of panic the minute the homeowner’s association sets the date for our annual yard sale. It’s true, I freak. A lot of my panic may have to do with the rush of people, blocked driveways and congested streets, but regardless, this time last year, I was beside myself and trust me, at a yard sale, one of me is enough! It was Saturday. My neighbors were outside manning their stations, and I was in the house hyperventilating. Apparently I wasn’t handling this yard sale any better than last year’s. I was breathing into one hand while searching for a paper bag with the other. The only bags I could find were plastic. Not a paper bag in sight! Plastic would have to do. I had been working up to this personal crisis for days. To calm my savaged soul my husband promised that when the yard sale came around he would handle any items we might wish to sell. True to his word, hubby was out in the yard keeping his promise, and I was in the house leaning against the garage door peeling a plastic bag off my face. I cracked the garage door an inch to see how things were going. There he was, in the center of the driveway, wheeling and dealing like a professional auctioneer. Though not a salesman by profession, I swear he could sell a melted Popsicle back to the vendor. He was in the “zone” and I was, literally, in the bag. The street was jam-packed with cars, vans and pick-up trucks cruising bumper to bumper. Shoppers tossed purchased items through windows and into the beds of trucks allowing them to arrive at the next site empty-handed. My back slid down the door, and I sat on the floor determined to get a grip on my emotions. Some minutes later I managed to reach my husband and asked how I could help. He took one look at my trance-like state and decided to use me as a security camera. So, like a mannequin, I sat atop a stool and rolled my eyes from side to side. It was the best I could do considering my shallow breathing. At least I was outside like the other wives and hopefully from a distance, I appeared normal. By noon, traffic was thinning and my panic began to wane. Only a few late arrivals were roaming the street. Most of our neighbors were calling it a day, but I remained seated until I got the official word from hubby that security was no longer needed. The guards of Buckingham Palace have nothing on me. Seeing life return to my body, hubby took a break and stepped next door leaving me in charge of a nearly empty table. And, as luck would have it, the minute he left the yard I had to manage a dollar sale all by myself and before he returned, a second. For the last sale I had to relinquish the plastic bag I’d stashed in my pocket for emergencies. The ninety degree heat had brought the color back to my cheeks and the two sales seemed to ease the tension in my body. I had survived. Silently I vowed, never, never again! Exhausted from the tension of the day, I went to bed early and rose late the next morning. I barely had one foot over the edge of the bed when hubby entered the bedroom with the newspaper and some bad news. He was glad to see I was still lying down. The neighbors, he reported, are on the streets discussing plans for next year’s yard sale. I smothered a scream. Look on the bright side, he suggested, you’ve got twelve months to find a paper bag. Or a way out of town!
