Robot registration: to easily and reliably perform the registration between the 3D CPS and the robot reference frames. Model configurator (optional): to autonomously create and insert new products starting from either the 3D CAD model or the scan. Collision avoidance (optional): to prevent collisions between the robot tool and the bin.

The Politecnico di Milano spin off company's general mission is performing a technology transfer function between academia and industry. Over the years ISS has taken part in various research projects in partnership with Politecnico di Milano, other research centres and several SMEs. The strong link with Politecnico di Milano is also witnessed by the close cooperation established with the Department of Mechanical Engineering Industrial Vision laboratory VB Lab and by the fact that Politecnico houses an ISS lab in its open research centre Campus Point. The tight contact with the research world allows the spin off engineers to share the state-of-the-art knowledge, so offering high technology content solutions. ISS has set up a close cooperation with TEN srl, one of the most important companies involved in the Italian machine tool market that has a great experience in distribution and pre and post sales consultancy service. This choice arises from the common will to establish a tight link between industry and applied research. In fact, a closer and closer integration between these fields is fundamental to achieve innovative solutions able to effectively and quickly satisfy the complicate needs of the present industrial market. ISS develops solutions in close contact with its customers, since the early stage of the project, when needs and specifications are laid down, up to the product installation and the staff training. A special care is also devoted to the post sales assistance and to the continuous improvement activity.

3D CPS Control & Picking Solution

3D Control & Picking Solution is the best answer to the need for flexibility in loading machines and assembly systems. It allows all robotic systems to directly pick objects out of a bin, without the need for preliminary complex part re-orientation. Control & Picking Solution

FLEXIBLE

Because not only it manages picking of randomly posed objects in a bin, but it can also identify mixed or superimposed parts. The 3D CPS system is based on a 3D vision system allowing to recognize and identify both position and orientation of different parts, just knowing their geometric shape.

GENIAL As it combines an intelligent object picking operation to a conformity verification, allowing to reject those parts not respecting the required dimensional tolerances. In fact both object scanning and recognition pass through a comparison between the real and ideal geometries, therefore allowing to quantify any deviation from what expected.

NOISELESS As it substitutes devices like hoppers, vibrating machines or conveyor belts, devices which produce a remarkable and often not sustainable noise pollution in a working environment. The absence of vibrating parts also ensures high reliability and less maintenance with respect to mechanical feeding systems.

EASY As it has been designed to help integration with already existing robotic production systems (retrofitting). In fact the system has built-in modules designed to create easy interfaces for communication with robots from the main manufacturers.

INTUITIVE As its use does not require specific programming skills. The only needed knowledge to learn a new part is related to the grasping operation. Operators already skilled to work with picking elements have the immediate capability to autonomously work with the system.

EFFECTIVE As in addition to a high reliability in recognizing single parts, it offers the chance to operate in idle times inside the robot cycle. In fact the scanning and the analysis are performed during the machine working cycle.

It has been conceived as an embedded solution allowing all robotic systems to pick parts arranged at random in a bin. It allows to solve machine loading problem in flexible manufacturing systems by capitalising the robot versatility, currently limited by a completely rigid mechanical periphery. 3D CPS integrates a laser scanner and an on-board intelligence, so being able to perform all the 3D measurement and analysis tasks needed to estimate the poses of the parts present in the bin. A special care was devoted to achieve very high reliability and versatility. In fact, the system can be integrated in all robotic cells, thanks to the use of an universal open TCP/IP communication protocol. Moreover, a single general purpose software, based on a robust 3D pattern matching algorithm, is able to handle all the possible parts to be picked. The operator has just to provide it with some relevant information about the model geometry by means of a wizard procedure. Each system component was designed in order to achieve the maximum of easiness and reliability, because this is essential to carry out effective solutions.
