15 December 2016 SPRING/SUMMER 2017 SEASON OF SHOWS FOR SCHOOLS & EDUCATION Our season of shows range from musicals about identity, a raw examination of a transitioning Brexit Britain and the topical and sensitive subject of mental health. Our work aims to support schools and education groups to explore these stories and themes in a safe creative space, to further enrich the live theatre experience for students and teachers we have a range of education, resources, ‘hands on’ opportunities and offers. Our school group tickets are very reasonably priced and come with a variety of education resources, plus optional extras such as workshops, so please read on for more information. Ticket Deals in Schools & Education Every show in the upcoming season, we have matched last season’s prices: Newham students £8 and non-Newham £9. Book 30 or more seats for a performance and get a complimentary 50 minute workshop for your students to explore the themes of the production through drama. Book 60 or more seats for a performance and get an exclusive complimentary post-show discussion with the creative team. Education Resources Education Resource Packs (digital or printed document with curriculum links, activity suggestions and conversation topics). Post-show discussions. 50 minute workshops for up to 30 students at the theatre: £60+VAT; in-school: £80+VAT. NEW! School take-overs. During our preview week we can offer an exclusive bespoke opportunity for your young people to come and spend the day with us here at Theatre Royal Stratford East. They will get to see the production, participate in a workshop, post-show discussion and take a tour of this grade II listed building for just £25+VAT per student. NEW! The Green Room Teachers’ Club. We recently launched our very own Teachers’ membership scheme. The Green Room Teachers’ Club will offer exclusive opportunities for enhancing the Theatre Royal Stratford East experience for you and your students. The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin 1 Feb - 11 Mar 2017

We start 2017 with the European premiere of The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin – which is all about a young African American girl from LA who dreams of being a dancer. Viveca fights racism and sexism from the 1960s to present day before realising her self-worth in this funny and moving musical.

Black 4 - 8 Apr 2017 Suitable for ages 12+ Featuring a repertoire ranging from Wagner and Purcell to Nina Simone and Whitney Houston, Black is an intimate and confessional portrait of Nigerian singer Le Gateau Chocolat’s life: his hopes, his fears and his battle with depression. Performed with an 11-piece orchestra.


Smother 13 & 16 Apr 2017 Suitable for ages 12+ Returning after an acclaimed sell-out run at Edinburgh Fringe 2016 and an international tour, this ground-breaking production touches on themes of addiction, obsession, and the meaning of commitment. Award winning choreographer Andrea Walker directs a cast of seven dancers in a fast-paced, intimate performance, exploring the relationship of two young men.

Room 2 May - 3 Jun 2017 Suitable for ages 13+ We’re delighted to present the world premiere of Room, adapted from Emma Donoghue’s bestselling novel with songs by Kathryn Joseph and Cora Bissett, here at Theatre Royal Stratford East. The film won multiple Academy Awards, Golden Globes and BAFTAs and we can’t wait to share this new stage version with our audiences.

Tommy 7 - 17 Jun 2017 Suitable for ages 14+ We’re proud to be part of Ramps on the Moon, a collective of theatres across the country committed to integrating disabled and non-disabled performers and practitioners. In June Kerry Michael will be directing The Who’s Tommy with a cast of 22 performers and musicians. This will be our second Ramps on the Moon production following last year’s success with The Government Inspector.

My Country: A Work In Progress 19 Jun - 1 Jul 2017 Suitable for ages 12+ We welcome our first collaboration with the National Theatre My Country; A Work in Progress. This new production dramatises the exact words of people around the country in the days after the EU referendum.

Summer in London 8 - 29 Jul 2017 Suitable for ages 12+ In July we have another world premiere: Summer in London. This new romcom by Rikki Beadle-Blair is a cross between On The Town, Roman Holiday and The Inbetweeners and our first show led by an all transgender company. Four cheeky London lads compete for the attention of a beautiful Filipino girl during a steamy record-breaking heatwave. Though secretly homeless – and broke – the streetwise Romeos use every trick in the book to find cost free ways to impress her.

What's on at Gerry's Whose Sari Now? Until 17 Dec 2016 Suitable for ages 14+ A one-woman show that explores real and complicated relationships with the sari. It’s a bold and powerful piece of theatre that takes you beyond the Bollywood wet sari.

Thisbe 21 - 25 Feb 2017 Suitable for ages 12+ ‘The course of true love never did run smooth’ – the daughter of Helena and Demetrius discovers there was never a truer word spoken in this actor-musician follow up to Shakespeare's popular comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
