AUTUMN/SPRING SEASON FOR SCHOOLS
We are very excited to let you know about our Autumn/Spring season of shows that all strike a chord for young people in schools. We are all experiencing challenging times, with young people asking poignant questions with events at home and around the world having an impact on us all. Our season of shows supports schools to explore some of these in a safe, creative space. To further enrich the live theatre experience for students and teachers we have a range of education resources, ‘hands on’ opportunities and offers.

• NEW Take-over during our preview week we can offer an exclusive bespoke opportunity for your young people to come and spend the day with us at Theatre Royal Stratford East. They will get to see the production, participate in a workshop and post-show discussion and take a tour of this grade II listed building. (£25 per student plus VAT).

The Green Room Teacher’s Club will offer exclusive opportunities to teachers that will enhance the Theatre Royal Stratford East experience for you and your students. Glasgow Girls Suitable for ages 12+ An uplifting musical about seven teenage girls from different faiths that lobbied and fought for refugee rights and changed the law. It is an important and relevant comment on a dawning Brexit landscape about immigration and gives young people a positive voice. The Hotel Cerise Suitable for ages 13+ Inspired by Anton Chekhov’s: ‘The Cherry Orchard’; Bonnie Greer’s timely piece opens up so many questions about America’s history, US politics and the status of Black America. Who will be the next US president to follow on from Obama’s legacy and how will that impact on all of our lives globally? Sinbad the Sailor A positive, fun story originally from Persia, that explores good versus evil, rite of passage and turns archetypes on their heads in the British pantomime tradition. Dates: 28 November 2016 – 21 January 2017

FREE to Newham schools. Using participatory drama and games, we will explore the archetypal characters to be found in panto and what lies beneath their bravado. The techniques are directly transferable to classroom teaching, providing teachers with creative ways to engage pupils in busting the myths around stereotypes. The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin Suitable for ages 13+ This piece takes a positive and satirical look since the 1960’s at Black women, identity and self-worth in the US and resonates with the pressures that our young women experience. This production explores Black America’s complex past and how it has sent echoes that have shaped and influenced our lives here in the UK.
