YP 2019 ARTS SHOWCASE

Friday, December 6, 2019 1:00 - 3:00pm | DP Building

Dear Grade 6, 7 and 8 families, Welcome to the 2019 MYP Arts Showcase. As our students will have completed their first rotation of the MYP Arts carousel, which includes Music, Visual Arts, and Theatre Arts, you will be able to see facets of the Arts programming through Grades 6 to 8 as well as your own child’s work. You will be surrounded by the Arts as Grades 6 to 8 student art pieces will be on display and actively performed throughout the Diploma Programme Building in the Big Top, the Sound Stage, the Art Room as well as in the IDEA Lab. During the MYP Arts Showcase, families are welcome to arrive at the DP building where they will be provided with a map and program which will outline the location and timing of each aspect of the program. We look forward to seeing you soon,

Michelle Douglas Senior School Principal

SIX

On Japanese taiko, students will demonstrate taiko skills and a traditional festival song called Matsuri. On African marimba, students will demonstrate exercises and music theory knowledge. They will then demonstrate how they used these skills to learn and perform a song of their choosing.

SEVEN

Grade 7 students learned a different style of playing the Japanese taiko called the Josuke style. Using this style, they will perform a composition by Tokyo Taiko group, Oedo Sukuroku. They will then use their knowledge of music theory to compose music for African marimba, which was created to accompany a scene from the documentary, Planet Earth.

EIGHT

Grade 8 students learned an exercise called X-Factor and a long version of Matsuri on taiko. This version is more advanced and will be used in Grade 9 and 10 Music for those who continue in the program. They also learned more complex musical exercises and a song called Hoombah on the African marimba. The final summative task consisted of combining all knowledge in a musical story developed by the class and told through their composition.
