ver since I was a little boy I was fascinated with jets. As a child, my parents took my brother and I to countless air shows around the country and I watched in awe while the planes flew overhead. This excitement fueled my passion for flying and aviation. I must admit, Top Gun, was on constant repeat at the Werley residence, and to this day I still get goose bumps when I see an airplane take off and smell the exhaust fumes. In this Fall/Winter issue of the newly revamped Stratosphere in-flight magazine, we’ve jam-packed the pages with the hottest fashions, top trends, and an all new 'Luxe Links' section for our readers that love to play only the best golf courses around the world.

CONTRIBUTORS Chris Cree // wine Chris has been in the wine trade for over 25 years, beginning when a trip to Europe after high school graduation developed into a life-long passion for wine. He has worked in virtually all of its aspects including winemaking, restaurant, import, wholesale, and retail. In 1996, he became only the thirteenth American to have passed the demanding Master of Wine Examination. Today, there are still only 29 Americans out of a total of approximately 235 people worldwide who have passed this most demanding wine examination since it was first given in London in 1953. The exam not only covers winemaking and grape growing, but the business of selling, marketing and distributing wine as well. It also demands that successful candidates identify (in a series of blind tastings held over three days), the grape(s) used, where they were grown (country and region), vinification methods employed, the vintage or age, alcohol, acidity, sweetness and the quality/maturity in a line up of 36 wines. Chris has also worked as a lecturer and educator for a wide array of clients including American Express, Merrill Lynch, Georgio Armani, IBM, Accenture, The Television Food Network, J.P Morgan, The Consulate Generale of Monaco, The Wall Street Journal, Crystal Cruise Lines, and many more. His success as a wine educator/lecturer can be attributed to a unique understanding of what people want to know about wine, a talent that evolved during years of working with clients of his retail shops.

I
t is a distinct pleasure to welcome you to the official in-flight publication of New World Aviation. We created this magazine with the desire to transcend your perceptions of in-flight reading, and deliver a level of interest and information above and beyond what you expect from the airlines. New World Aviation’s “product” is much more than flying, maintaining, and managing aircraft. We serve the needs of the people with passions.
Over a decade ago it would have been hard for me to imagine that I’d be where I am today. I was a pilot for an upstart aviation company that was born primarily to serve aircraft owners with specific needs not addressed by the industry leaders. I was attracted to this new company because of its commitment to the things most important to me as a pilot. There was an uncommon investment in training to ensure I was prepared to make the best decisions possible in the air and on the ground. The most skilled and experienced technicians were recruited to ensure continuity in the maintenance and safe operation of the aircraft in the fleet. As a pilot, there couldn’t be anything more important than this commitment to safety. That is why today those who make up the core of the leadership in New World Aviation’s flight and maintenance personnel were also there on our first day, over a decade ago. Safety remains New World Aviation’s priority. Our unrelenting dedication to safety exceeds the highest standards in the aviation industry with our certifications through the Aviation Research Group, US (ARG/US®) and Wyvern Wingman™, along with our registration with the International Standards for Business Aircraft Operations (ISBAO) and is a testament of our continued commitment. Since those early days in 1998, our facilities have grown to include 2 hangars conveniently located in Allentown, Pa totaling 111,000 square feet. We also operate a separate helicopter facility in Belmar, NJ to serve our New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut clientele. Over the years we have earned the distinction as an FAA Certified Part 145 Repair Station for Gulfstream, Challenger, Hawker, Lear Jet, and Sikorsky Helicopter. We have an avionics department to keep in-step with the state-of-the-art in aviation technology. Rare among private aviation companies, the operational control of every New World Aviation flight is in the hands of an FAA licensed Dispatcher, with training and experience to negotiate the best flight plan through dynamic changes in traffic, weather and ground conditions. We have a fully functioning Human Resources department to develop the kinds of competitive compensation and benefits programs that attract and keep the best aviation professionals available, while also overseeing all pilot and technician compliance requirements and safety training needs. To serve our clients with concierge-like attention, we have an experienced travel coordinator. Compared to the industry, we’ve been able to deliver these benefits while surpassing the rest of the industry in safety, service and financial benefits in over a dozen areas. Serving as New World Aviation’s President and Chief Operating Officer since 2006, I realize that the changes we make going forward must improve us by our own standards – the facts show that we passed the industry expectations long ago. We have earned a leadership position in the industry by always focusing on what’s most important to you: Safety, Value, and Comfort. New World Aviation doesn’t strive to be the biggest. Our mission is clear. We simply want to be the best for you. Welcome to New World Aviation’s “world of difference” through Stratosphere. Thank you for flying with us and we look forward to satisfying all your travel requirements in the years ahead.

"Jewels of time, watches as jewelry . . .no one has accomplished this better than Boucheron in their AjourĂŠe collection. Unlike most ladies watches, which tend to be smaller, diamond encrusted versions of mens watches, the genius of this collection is that they have housed the movement of the timepiece in a diminutive case, allowing for the rest of the watch to dazzle with gems. But Boucheron takes it one step further with dimensional 18k white gold sculptures set with diamonds, multi-color sapphires, tsavorites and rubies. If exotic chameleons and tropical frogs are too adventurous for you, Boucheron offers an intricate openwork design in white diamonds that is anything but tame. ~Michelle Sbrocchi

ou know the name, you know the face, and you know the seductive vocals of lead singer, Adam Levine. Maroon 5 and its members, James Valentine, Jesse Carmichael, Michael Madden, Matt Flynn, and Adam Levine, has swept through radio stations and iPods in the last decade, swaying their listeners with smooth yet edgy pop/rock songs. The enticing band from Los Angeles won us over in 2002 with their break out hits, “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” and “She Will Be Loved.” Not only are their songs catchy but they are evidently addicting as well. Out of their three studio records, over five singles struck the Billboard Hot 100. Constantly re-inventing their neosoul tunes, Maroon 5’s hits have been hypnotizing their fans for years. Maroon 5’s harmonized songs cover all aspects of love, romance, and seduction. Each song, intertwined with emotion and passion, leaves the mainstream music world wanting more. What’s even better is Maroon 5’s ability to make us melt. Perhaps it is their mysterious combination of sensuality and bad boy California style that has made them perpetual eye candy for women all over the world. Unlike many bad boys, though, Maroon 5 did not have to smooth talk their way to the top. They began their climb to fame by touring excessively once their first studio album, Songs About Jane, was released. By playing dozens of shows to promote their new album, Maroon 5 created a whirlwind of success. Countless hours on the road soon led to countless fans downloading their songs and buying their albums. They suddenly found themselves in the company of artists like Usher, Alicia Keys, and John Mayer and their success was no fading trend. In fact, the band’s accomplishments were just beginning. 24 Stratosphere
In 2005, Maroon 5 garnered a Grammy for Best New Artist, beating out other up-and-coming musicians such as Joss Stone and Kanye West. They also won two more awards for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals for “This Love,” in 2005, and “Makes Me Wonder,” in 2007. In 2006, the fierce five-some re-emerged with an even stronger album, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. They utterly defied the Billboard Hot 100 with the biggest climb in Billboard history. The release of “Makes Me Wonder” started out at #84 and shot straight up to #1 within a week. Their fans helped the band’s single become #1 on iTunes as well as the #1 video and #1 album, selling over 101,000 albums upon its release. A year later, “If I Never See Your Face Again” fed fans another dose of charming, upbeat music that Maroon 5 is so well known for. The song was later rereleased as a racy duet with Rihanna.
Now, Maroon 5 is at it again with their latest album, Overexposed. The first hit off of this album, “Payphone,” debuted on June 22, 2012 before finding its place in the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. It also received a Grammy nomi-
nation (their 8th Grammy nomination overall) this year in 2012. Still, fans can’t get enough and Maroon 5 is sure to keep us all tempted for more tunes. The seeming obsession that Maroon 5’s fans have for them is the fuel to the band’s fiery success, and they certainly don’t seem to be cooling off any time soon. n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

Bulgari Hotel & Residences - London, UK Bulgari Suite
The Bulgari Hotel & Residences, London, pays tribute to Bulgari’s silversmith origins and Britain’s noble manufacturing traditions with an understated, elegant design concept with silver forming the underlying theme of the design. The sleek architecture and refined interiors are designed by Antonio Citterio, Patricia Viel and Partners, with Squire and Partners as the local architect, coupling the Bulgari glamour and heritage with sustainable design features and state of the art technology. Many of the furnishings and textiles throughout the hotel and residences are made exclusively for Bulgari crafted by Italian manufacturers. Why Splurge: The Bulgari Suites are inspired by London’s nautical tradition. Woodwork in polished mahogany, white veined marble for the bathrooms, details in chrome, and a mini-bar incorporated into a traveller’s trunk designed and built for this project constitute the unifying thread for the extremely comfortable and inviting rooms, with custom virgin wool carpeting and silk wall coverings. The lighting is warm and indirect, provided by the latest generation LED technology, and can be regulated to obtain the perfect level of visual comfort. The beds, also custom designed, are distinguished by a particularly sumptuous fabric shot through with gold and silver thread, custom made and inspired by the original drawings of the earliest creations of Sotiro Bulgari, the founder, in the late 19th century. These designs are replicated in the curtains, where its effect is accentuated by lighting from below. The suites have additional features, such as fireplaces, kitchens, dining rooms, offices, large walk-in wardrobes, terraces and views of Knightsbridge. Exclusive details like the showers in ivory onyx, carefully selected vintage Moroccan carpets from the Beni Ouarain tribes, contemporary chandeliers in Murano glass and upholstery fabrics specially designed and woven in Italy. CELLARNOTES BY CHRIS CREE
MASTER OF WINE
PIEDMONT
Italy’s greatest and most highly regarded wines
L
ocated in the Northwest of Italy, the Piedmont region is the home of two of the most renowned red wines in the world, Barolo and Barbaresco. Sought after by connoisseurs and collectors, these magnificent wines are fairly expensive and can need years of bottle age before they are ready to drink. Yet what really puts Piedmont on the map for the majority of wine lovers is that it also produces a wide range of wines that are affordable, ready to drink, food friendly, and perfect for everyday enjoyment. Like all great wine regions, the style and quality of Piedmontese wines is the result of millions of years of geologic evolution combined with the influences of climate (Mediterranean meets Alps), the grape varieties grown, and the traditions and wine making methods used to craft them. Piedmont, which means "foothills" in Italian, lies at the intersection of two great geological forces where the African and European continents collide. This massive force not only created the Alps, which are visible on a clear day from much of the region, but also pushed up an ancient seafloor to the surface creating a jumbled series of steep hills with a mix of different soils, slopes, altitudes and exposures that are perfect for growing grapes. The subtle differences between vineyard sites favor grapes with different ripening requirements, and a host of grape varieties are planted in the region depending on the specific microclimate where they are planted. While Piedmont is best known for its reds, there are also delicious white, rosè, sparkling, and sweet wines too. Piedmontese whites are typically crisp, clean and on the light, refreshing side. Some of the best known are made from local varieties such as Arneis, Cortese (the grape in Gavi), and a few lesser known indigenous grapes including Erbaluce and Favorita. There are some international varieties including Riesling, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc too. Moscato is widely planted and is mainly used in the production of sparkling sweet wine called Moscato d'Asti. Red grapes include Grignolino, Brachetto, Grachetto, Friesa, Croatina, and Vespolina to name a few obscure local varieties, plus Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir as the international representatives. But the bulk of red wine is made from Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo. Both Dolcetto and Barbera are fairly early ripeners, making lovely fresh, lively wines that have the dual benefit that wine makers can sell them a year or so after harvest (and get paid sooner) and that wine lovers can drink them pretty much when they are released. Since they ripen earlier, they can be grown in vineyards in cooler sites and are a little less demanding than Nebbiolo. Dolcetto has a dark, edgy cherry character with moderate tannins and modest acidity. It can be made in a slightly rustic style with more structure, or in a more modern style that is juicier and more fruit driven. Either way it can be drunk young and fresh within a few years of the vintage. Barbera is typically a bit higher in acid and slightly lower in tannins than Dolcetto. Most Barbera is pretty simple and straight forward yet deliciously juicy wine with bright red fruits and cherry notes. When it is planted in top vineyard sites it can morph into a wine with much more stature, depth and power. Barbera can be vinified in a more traditional style in large neutral barrels or concrete, or in a modern style and aged in barrique, and the best can age and improve for 8-10 years.
Nebbiolo, the sole grape in Barolo and Barbaresco, is a late ripenening varietal. It is widely believed that it took its name from the n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m
mist and fog (Nebbia in Italian) that is typical in the late fall when the grape finally ripens. While Dolcetto and Barbera can thrive in cooler sites, Nebbiolo destined Barolo and Barbaresco needs the best of the warm, sunny, south facing vineyards to capture the heat and fully mature. It produces wines that can range in style from fresh and lively and ready to drink (Langhe Nebbiolo for example), to solid, tensely structured and firmly tannic wines that need a decade or two to reach their peak when planted in the Barberesco and Barolo DOCGs. The main determining factors in the quality and style of Nebbiolo are vintage conditions, vine age, vinification method, and perhaps most importantly, vineyard location. When made in the lighter style it undergoes shorter fermentation and maceration in order to keep its red fruit and freshness. Nebbiolo destined for Barolo and Barbaresco undergo much longer fermentation and maturation, with several years of barrel and bottle aging required by law before they can be sold, and only the best Nebbiolo grapes are used. Most of the wine made in Piedmont is in the vineyards around the towns of Asti, Alba and Alessandria, but there are five main regions: Canavese (including Carema and Caluso), Colline Novarese, Coste della Sesia in the north, Langhe - including the hill country around the city of Alba and the Roero, and Monferrato which includes the areas around Asti and Alessandria. The region has 45 Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) and 12 Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). The DOCG wines are: Asti, Barbaresco, Barbera d'Asti, Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, Barolo, Acqui, Dogliani, Ovada, Gattinara, Gavi, Ghemme and Roero. The Barolo DOCG has several sub zones - Castiglione Falletto, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba - and each has its own unique terrior and style. Barbaresco also has several sub zones - Barbaresco, Treiso, and Neive - again with subtle influences on the style of wines produced. In both Barolo and Barbaresco, producer is important as styles can range from very traditional, austere and almost rustic to much more extracted, riper and more modern styles. The grape, with its firm tannins, good acidity and relatively low color component makes wines that are rarely inky dark purple, rather they have a little more garnet and lighter hues, almost brick hints at the edges. Barolo and Barbaresco are often described as "big wines" but to me, while definitely intense, they are more nervy, racy and highly strung, less generous and more reserved and tight especially when young, and with more dried fruits, earth and leather notes than sheer power and opulence. In this sense they can be a bit stand-offish at first for lovers of riper, oakier, more fruit oriented wines. The wines of Piedmont are fantastic partners at the table. From light fresh whites that are perfect as an apertif, with fish, appetizers, risotto or pasta with seafood, to medium bodied reds like Barbera or Dolcetto which are great with light meats, pasta with red sauce or pizza, and Barolo and Barbaresco with griiled lamb, veal chops or beef, they are well worth getting to know. For after dinner there are sweetly sparkling Moscato d'Asti with its peachy pear notes, or Brachetto d'Aqui, a sweet sparkling red that us like liquid raspberries. A series of great vintages has made a wealth of wine available for affordable everday drinking as well as for the collector looking to stock the cellar with age worthy gems making this a great time to explore this excellent wine region.

P1 McLaren supercar
M
cLaren P1. Science fiction or reality? The modern automobile has continuously evolved into a highly advanced electromechanical device. Every so often a manufacturer introduces ground breaking technology and performance; raising the bar and setting the path for years to come. When this all new supercar hits the ground in 2013 it will be one such car. Everybody boasts racing improves the breed but very few companies can back up that claim as strong as McLaren. Beginning in the 1960’s with their Lemans efforts, McLaren has been a motorsports company since day one, winning their first World Constructors' Championship in 1974 with Brazilian driver Emerson Fittipaldi. In 1992 McLaren produced its first road car, the McLaren F1, which had many similarities to its Formula One car. In total 106 were produced from 1992–1998, and even though it has been out of production for 13 years, there are still few cars that can match its performance. The new flagship will be feature a super strong yet very lightweight carbon fiber chassis. The outer body panels are made from carbon fiber as well and contribute greatly to the amazingly low curb weight of 2900 pounds. Power comes from a twin-turbo 3.8 liter V8 engine that produces around 800 horsepower. According to McLaren 0-60 MPH is achieved in under 3 seconds with a mind blowing top speed of 239 MPH! Aside from the staggering performance this machine can deliver there are many other interesting and impressive features and technology. Take for example the windows are reportedly made of a special type of acrylic, which repels water, meaning the P1 can do without windshield wipers. There is also an active suspension and anti-roll system that allows the car to remain virtually flat even when hard pressed in the turns. McLaren intends to construct 500 units. 20 years ago all of this would have sounded like sci-fi, but McLaren can deliver these goods today, all in an artfully sculpted body. his unique collaboration between two of Italy's most renowned design houses celebrates the era of La Dolce Vita, when a joie de vivre, glamour and elegance defined an attitude and a lifestyle. In their respective sectors, Gucci and Riva have similar stories, each with a tradition of excellence in design and craftsmanship that has led to international notoriety. Respecting the DNA of the original project created by Officina Italiana Design was paramount to Gucci's design for Aquariva. Defining the Aquariva by Gucci is a fiberglass hull and detailing painted in Gucci’s own hue of glossy white, while Riva’s signature use of mahogany with classic varnish finish – twenty coats in all, ten by brushing, ten by spraying – is also the signature material for the cockpit and walking decks and awning cover hatch. The waterproof fabric covering the seats and sundeck features the emblematic Guccissima print, while the bed upholstery is defined by the beauty of Gucci white cotton. The iconic touch is provided by Gucci's green-red-green web detailing which edges the floating line, perfectly complementing the unique green crystal windshield. Completing the Gucci customization is a series of exclusive Riva by Gucci accessories. The innovative two-speed electronic gear reveals all the power of the two 380-horsepower Yanmar engines, ensuring an exceptional performance, with a maximum speed of 41 knots and a 150-mile range at cruising speed. The Aquariva by Gucci will be exclusively available on a made-to-order basis through Riva's dealer network. For more info check out Riva Yachts online at www.riva-yacht.com 36 Stratosphere

SPICY CIVICHE Cool and crisp with a kick
C
eviche is Latin America’s answer to sushi. Like sushi, the star ingredient in ceviche is fruto del mar (fruit of the sea) accompanied by the freshest, simplest ingredients. The difference is that with ceviche—fresh fish marinated in tangy lime juice, crunchy salt, spicy chiles, and finished with a sprinkling of herbs and onion—the ingredients are “cooked” in the acidic citrus juice and finished with a variety of garnishes from fresh corn on the cob to cooked cubed sweet potatoes. Here is the recipe for the perfect summer civiche.
INGREDIENTS Per serving: 8oz 4oz 2oz 1 1 n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m
DIRECTIONS Mix the passionfruit juice, rice vinegar, salt and sugar. Marinate the fluke slices in this mixture for 1 hr. Remove fish and line up on a plate. Drizzle with olive oil and a few drops of marinade. Garnish with cilantro, radishes and jalapeno.
CHEF'S WINE PICK: La Marca Prosecco Fluke filets Passionfruit juice Rice vinegar Tablespoon sugar Teaspoon Maldon sea salt Extra virgin olive oil Radish batons Sliced Jalapeno Micro Cilantro
La Marca Prosecco di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene wine is a pale, golden straw in color. Bubbles are full textured and persistent. On the nose the wine brings fresh citrus with hints of honey and white flowers. The flavor is fresh and clean, with ripe citrus, lemon, green apple, and touches of grapefruit, minerality, and some toast. The finish is light, refreshing, and crisp.

G650
The world's most prestigious private jet
T
here are significant events along aviation’s time line that have changed everything. It took only a few seconds during the winter of 1903 for Orville and Wilbur Wright to set the course for fixedwing aviation. Charles Lindbergh lay prone in a cramped and torturously uncomfortable shell of an aircraft in 1927, battling weather and fatigue in the first flight to cross the Atlantic. In the 1950’s Chuck Yeager bravely split a hole through the sky that sound couldn’t catch. These historic achievements create an appropriate perspective for how far we have come as Gulfstream places their newest mark on the timeline. Through the introduction of the G650, Gulfstream will deliver a near-transonic marvel with unparalleled perfections in the Wright’s three axis control design, comfort that Lindbergh may not have enjoyed in his own living room, and speed that Yeager may never have expected possible from an aircraft so spacious. As Gulfstream celebrates its 50th anniversary, announcing a new ultra-long range, large cabin and technologically advanced aircraft comes as no surprise. Yet, it’s mind boggling to ponder an ultra-heavy jet that pushes through the atmosphere at a near-transonic rate. That’s Mach .925! Worry that the sky may be too crowded for that speed? The G650 will climb over a mile higher than where Yeager’s X-1 first out paced sound so it can cruise in a space where weather difficulties and commercial traffic congestion are minimized. Of course, the G650’s 51,000 feet altitude potential is not a new maximum ceiling for a Gulfstream jet. It is the same as the G550. New for the long-range cruiser is the reduced “cabin altitude” from the G550’s 6,000 feet to 4,850 feet while the aircraft is at its peak altitude and a comfortable environment of 2,800 feet while cruising at 41,000 feet. This design keeps all aboard more comfortable, alert and productive. The G650 includes larger windows, improved lighting and an Advanced Environmental Control System (with independent lavatory venting) that quietly distributes 100% fresh air. The interior noise levels are at an alltime low as the result of advanced acoustical research. While Lindbergh may have struggled to find one comfortable position as he made the first trip across the Atlantic, the G650 offers twelve different comfortable floor plans and will accommodate as many as 16 passengers. All essential cabin systems have been designed with redundancy to ensure that nothing interrupts the comfort or productivity of the passengers. Those aboard will enjoy a longer living area, more space to recline, a larger galley, larger seats and wider aisles. There’s more comfort for the crew, too. In the cockpit, the flight deck layout is similar to the G550 to allow experienced Gulfstream pilots to easily assimilate with a
44 Stratosphere
minimum of training. It features the PlaneView® II cockpit with four 14” liquid crystal displays and a range of other enhancements to increase safety and reliability. The cockpit combines the latest in avionics technology from Kollsman, Honeywell, and Rockwell Collins to provide the pilot with unprecedented situational awareness. The fly-by-wire flight control system lets a pilot transmit control inputs electronically into its highly redundant flight control architecture. The primary three axis flight control system includes two independent computers, each hosting four channels. The three axis back up flight control unit has completely independent hardware and software. These features underscore a design philosophy that can be seen throughout the aircraft. Electrical and fuel systems introduce innovations that add safety, reliability, economy, and peace-of-mind. Advances in design and manufacturing have improved the aircraft’s fit and finish, reduced weight and the number of parts in many key components. These advances result in a streamlined manufacturing cycle that ultimately results in measurable energy savings. The ultimate benefit to those on the waiting list for a new G650 is to be able to shave 88 minutes from the 6,370 mile non-stop trip from Chicago to Dubai or 50 minutes from New York to Tokyo. It’s being able to stretch out in unparalleled comfort or to work in a controlled atmosphere that maximizes productivity. The redundant systems ensuring the movie will run uninterrupted and that the toilet will always flush are born from a design philosophy that also provides unprecedented back-up for every system and component critical to providing the safest possible flying experience.
The G650 is sure to set a new value standard in variable operating costs for jets in its class. The new Rolls Royce BR725 engines may push you in the neighborhood of Mach, yet they cruise with the fuel-burn levels of smaller jets. It’s predicted that the aircraft’s demand will drive the price from the initial $58 million to the mid-$60 millions by the time the first jets are delivered in 2012. n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

Port Royal, not short on golf.
W
ell-known for its pink beaches and pink shorts, Bermuda is much more than what is exported. A very easy flight from the East Coast, this island paradise seduces you with varying shades of blue ocean water, pink-sand beaches, amazing golf and extremely friendly locals.
This extraordinary island is 22 miles long and 3 miles wide and boasts nine golf courses, the highest concentration per square mile in the world. Two stellar courses I had the opportunity to play were Mid Ocean, where the PGA Grand Slam was held in 2007, and Port Royal where it is currently held. The PGA Grand Slam of Golf features perhaps the most exclusive foursome in golf and the most difficult qualification requirement in the game -- a major championship. This year prior PGA and PGA Grand Slam of Golf champion Keegan Bradley will join Masters champion Bubba Watson, U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson and Open Champion Ernie Els for spectacular golf and Bermudian hospitality. The PGA Grand Slam has a $1.35 million purse with the winner receiving $600,000, second place $300,000, third $250,000 and the fourth $200,000. With only four players in the field, these are great odds. While this event has been around since 1979 in various formats, it has grown to a 36-hole annual showdown that matches golf's best against each other and the breathtaking Port Royal Golf Course. For an island destination it is refreshing to experience charming British traditions coupled with over 500 years of history and culture. There is an elegance and refinement that you do not normally experience in tropical destinations. Not short on golf courses for a small island you can play Ocean View, Port Royal and St George’s by calling and requesting a tee time. Three other spectacular courses Mid Ocean, Tucker’s Point Club and Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club are private and an introduction by a member is required however many hotels have corporate memberships and can introduce a limited number of their guests. Mid Ocean Golf Club was designed by Charles Blair MacDonald to fit into the natural terrain. It was originally a par-71 layout crossing over 600 acres of rolling countryside, and 6,519 yards from the back tees. MacDonald won the first U.S. Amateur in 1895 and later designed the National Golf Links of America, among many others. In recent years Mid Ocean Golf Club was ranked 45th by Golf Digest for courses outside the U.S. It was revised in 1953 by Robert Trent Jones. American Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, George H. W. Bush and Jimmy Carter have played here, as well as British Prime Ministers Sir n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m
Winston Churchill, Harold MacMillan and Edward Heath and the Duke of Windsor in 1940. Golf professionals Bobby Jones, Sam Sneed and many other celebrities also have played there, including Babe Ruth, who was not quite as good with a golf club as he was with a bat. When playing the 433-yard fifth hole, "The Babe" knocked 11 straight balls into Mangrove Lake before finally driving one over the hazard. Port Royal opened in 1970 as a Robert Trent Jones-designed, 6,561-yard par-71 public course. The course re-opened in January 2009 after a $15.9 million renovation that increased its yardage by 281 yards to 6,842. More rounds are played here than on any other Bermuda course. The signature hole is the 176-yard, par-3 16th hole, whose small green is perched on the edge of the coastal cliffs. Drive too far left and the ball ends up in the ocean. It was here I received a full dose of Bermudian hospitality with a lesson as to the best way to play the 16th by Kim Swan, a former European Tour playing pro and now an elected Member of Parliament. Swan met us on 16 and was wearing the typical Bermudian outfit, a blazer, Bermuda shorts and the high knee sox. When I asked him if he was going to take off his blazer jacket to hit his drive, his response turned out to be one of the most interesting golf tips I have ever heard. Swan learned to play golf from his uncle, who used to have Swan practice in a blazer as it prevented him from over-swinging the club and helped with his alignment. In traditional Two Good Rounds fashion a stop at the bar for a drink after the round is required. This is perhaps one of my favorite 19th holes due to the unique and traditional drinks known to Bermuda and for the stunning views from the clubhouse overlooking the 16th hole, cliff side and majestic blue water. Take the opportunity to savor the local flavor, the well-known cocktails on the island that are a must include the "Rum Swizzle" and the "Dark and Stormy." The Rum Swizzle consists of 8 ounces of Gosling's Black Seal rum, six dashes of Angostura bitters, juice from two lemons, crushed ice, a five-ounce pineapple juice, five-ounce orange juice and two ounces of grenadine syrup. The Dark and Stormy consists of Gosling's dark rum and ginger beer over ice.
Mark Twain is quoted as saying, “You can go to heaven if you want. I'd rather stay in Bermuda.” I couldn’t agree with him more. Stratosphere 47
