Ever since I was a little boy I was fascinated with jets. As a child, my parents took my brother and I to countless air shows around the country and I watched in awe while the planes flew overhead. This excitement fueled my passion for flying and aviation. I must admit, Top Gun, was on constant repeat at the Werley residence, and to this day I still get goose bumps when I see an airplane take off and smell the exhaust fumes.

Chris has been in the wine trade for over 25 years, beginning when a trip to Europe after high school graduation developed into a life-long passion for wine. He has worked in virtually all of its aspects including winemaking, restaurant, import, wholesale, and retail. In 1996, he became only the thirteenth American to have passed the demanding Master of Wine Examination. Today, there are still only 29 Americans out of a total of approximately 235 people worldwide who have passed this most demanding wine examination since it was first given in London in 1953. The exam not only covers winemaking and grape growing, but the business of selling, marketing and distributing wine as well. It also demands that successful candidates identify (in a series of blind tastings held over three days), the grape(s) used, where they were grown (country and region), vinification methods employed, the vintage or age, alcohol, acidity, sweetness and the quality/ maturity in a line up of 36 wines. Chris has also worked as a lecturer and educator for a wide array of clients including American Express, Merrill Lynch, Georgio Armani, IBM, Accenture, The Television Food Network, J.P Morgan, The Consulate Generale of Monaco, The Wall Street Journal, Crystal Cruise Lines, and many more. His success as a wine educator/lecturer can be attributed to a unique understanding of what people want to know about wine, a talent that evolved during years of working with clients of his retail shops.

North America’s Premier Automotive Resort and Private Racetrack With Monticello Motor Club’s One-Day Taste of the Track

I

t is a distinct pleasure to welcome you to the official in-flight publication of New World Aviation. We created this magazine with the desire to transcend your perceptions of in-flight reading, and deliver a level of interest and information above and beyond what you expect from the airlines. New World Aviation’s “product” is much more than flying, maintaining, and managing aircraft. We serve the needs of the people with passions. October marked a milestone for us – our 15th Anniversary. Since those early days in 1998, it would have been hard for me to imagine where I am today. I was a pilot for an upstart aviation company that was born primarily to serve aircraft owners with specific needs not addressed by the industry leaders. I was attracted to this new company because of its commitment to the things most important to me as a pilot. There was an uncommon investment in training to ensure I was prepared to make the best decisions possible in the air and on the ground. The most skilled and experienced technicians were recruited to ensure continuity in the maintenance and safe operation of the aircraft in the fleet. For a pilot, there couldn’t be anything more important than this commitment to safety. Those who make up the core of the leadership in New World Aviation’s flight and maintenance personnel were also there on our first day, over a decade ago. In our time, we have earned the distinction as an FAA Certified Part 145 Repair Station for Gulfstream, Challenger, Hawker, and Learjet, and our facilities have grown to include 2 hangars totaling 111,000 square feet headquartered conveniently in the Northeast corridor in Allentown, Pa. The aviation industry has seen a lot of changes during our years. As President and Chief Operating Officer since 2006, I realize changes we make going forward must improve us by our own standards and the facts show that we passed the industry expectations long ago. Even with the economic challenges faced over the past few years, the industry leaders have intensely competed to add aircraft to their fleets and measure their success by fleet size and flight hours. From our first day, we have chosen a different route. There is a temptation to chart a path in the footsteps of those who are bigger, growing faster, and who get the greatest amount of attention. Over the years, I have observed that New World Aviation flourished when it separated itself from the status quo of the aviation industry and took an independent route. We have earned a leadership position in the industry by always focusing on what’s most important to you, Safety, Value, and Comfort. Safety remains New World Aviation’s priority. Our unrelenting dedication to safety exceeds the highest standards in the aviation industry with and is a testament of our continued commitment. Through recent audits, we continue to keep our Platinum rating through the Aviation Research Group, US (ARG/US®), Wyvern Wingman™ status and additionally achieving Stage II registration with the International Standards for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO). To put our safety commitment into perspective, in 2012 our fleet flew 2,250 hours and transported 3,675 passengers more than 3.3 million passenger miles. That equates to 132 times around the world – completely incident free!!

In our vision of private aviation, success only comes when we serve the individual client at a measurably higher standard than the status quo. We do not strive to be the biggest. Our mission is clear; New World Aviation wants to be the best for you. Thank you for flying with us and we look forward to satisfying all your travel requirements now and into the future. The New World Aviation Team hopes you find the content in the pages of Stratosphere entertaining, informative, and even inspiring. We appreciate and encourage your feedback, so do not hesitate to contact me directly with any comments or suggestions for future editions. Relax and enjoy the journey through the Stratosphere!

Lalique 15-Day Table Clock Parmigiani Fleurier has joined forces with Lalique, experts in fine crystal work, to create an exclusive limited edition version featuring a Lalique crystal to enhance the clock's exquisite contours. The 15-day Table Clock lays bare the stark architecture of its movement and the beauty of its transparent finish behind five rock crystal panels. A powerful symbol of life and rebirth, here the Coutared fountain is associated with an ageless Table Clock - a reminder that the possibilities for reviving the great classics are truly limitless.A special mechanism inspired by the Maltese cross, allows the 2-week power reserve to be featured directly on the barrel. In terms of winding, the power reserve system is made of an axis linked to a cam which allows the four hands, shaped like a spider around the barrel, to jump in counter movement to it. The Table Clock’s cabinet, which is made from 1 kg of 925 sterling silver; is rhodium plated to avoid any oxidation. It is a simple yet ingenious system whereby the escapement is provided with a force of constant intensity.

TIME FLIES Bovet: Amadeo Virtuoso An icon among the new 2013 collection, the Virtuoso Tourbillon is a fresh expression of the talents of the BOVET 1822 and DIMIER 1738 artisans. Once again, technical sophistication and ingenuity meet the watchmaking decorative arts in a truly happy match. Right at first glance, the fusion between the movement and the case to form a unique entity appears more clearly than ever. The original way in which the volume provided by the case is occupied grants pride of place to wide-open spaces, as if better to suspend time. As usual, the guidelines given by Pascal Raffy in the early stages of development led the craftsmen to orchestrate complex mechanisms in order to secure the best possible performances – while ensuring complete respect for the aesthetic criteria of the House of BOVET that have been nurturing watchmaking’s artistic heritage for over two centuries. CELLARNOTES BY CHRIS CREE MASTER OF WINE

O

ne of the most exciting trends in the wine and spirits trade today is the explosion in micro-distilled spirits that have burst onto the scene in the last couple of years. The numbers are astonishing, with craft or micro distilleries growing from 50 in 2005 to over 250 in 45 different states in 2012, according to the American Distilling Institute. Like the craft beer boom that has dramatically altered the beer scene and brought hundreds of new breweries into the market, small batch bourbons, craft gins, vodkas and whiskeys of all sorts are finding their way into bars, restaurants and retail shelves and opening a whole world of taste. But unlike craft beers, whose production times are typically measured in months, whiskeys take time – often years and sometimes a decade or more to mature and mellow. This can make it difficult to for startups to break in given the investment in time and money required to create truly great aged whiskeys. Clear sprits are much less time and capital intensive, and many small distilleries are starting with rum, gin or vodka, or offering a line of both clear and aged spirits in order to augment cash flow. The time needed to age good bourbon and whiskey has also created headaches for existing producers (and consumers) of some of the classics, as the increased demand has created shortages and price increases. Some of the bourbon brands we could hardly give away a few years back now have waiting lists that range from just plain long to “forget about it”. Non-Aged spirits like gin and vodka can provide an easier entry in terms of time and money required to make them, but the fields are crowded and competitive and it can be hard to break in. As for aged spirits, some distillers are aging for shorter time in smaller barrels in order to get their products to market faster. By increasing the surface to volume ratio between the wood and the whiskey, the 42 Stratosphere

e e r C s i r h C absorption of the flavoring elements of the barrel are absorbed more quickly, shortening the time need to create that smoky, smooth, charred oak component and creating a process that allows distillers to sell them at a much earlier age. While this can produce some pretty good whiskey at very reasonable prices, there is no substitute for a long, slow maturation, with the very best still being made in the time-honored tradition of extended barrel aging. As the old guard says “you have to give the Angels their share”, a reference to the amount of spirits that evaporate during the time spent in barrel. The good news for consumers is that there is an increasingly diverse and exciting collection of truly unique handcrafted spirits available on the market. While some of the classics might be hard to find (Black Maple Hill is one that comes to mind, as is Pappy Van Winkle, another virtually non-available brand), others have stepped to fill the void. Some to look out for are Caledonia Spirits & Winery, located in northeast Vermont and their stunning, aromatic Gin and Vodka; Greenhook Ginsmiths, a tiny distiller in Brooklyn New York making outstanding Gin, Boyd and Blair Vodka from western Pennsylvania is superb and made from local, organically grown potatoes, and New Jersey’s Artisan Distilling, the first new distilling license granted by the state since prohibition, is making an excellent Rum. Journeyman Distilling in Michigan has an excellent collection of small batch Gin, Vodka and Whiskeys, and High West Distilling in Utah is also making some truly compelling whiskeys. So this holiday season it’s out with the old and in with the new! Whether it’s for gift or your own personal consumption, definitely seek out these extraordinary hand crafted spirits! n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

rugal 1888 Combines a distinctively dry style of spirit with a proprietary aging process to produce a complex and layered rum that is truly unique. The product starts with a clean and dry distillate, which is then aged to maturity for 6-8 years in American Oak Casks, followed by a 2-4 year ageing in Oloroso Sherry Casks - the same casks used to mature the world’s finest single malt. The finished product is smooth, rich and full bodied while still retaining the distinctively dry style that separates Brugal from all other rums on the market. The Brugal distillery leverages the expertise of The Edrington Groups’s Master of Wood, George Espie, who runs The Macallan and Highland Park Scotch Whisky’s Cask Management Systems. Under The Edrington Group’s guidance, the casks in which 1888 is both double-distilled and double-matured are handcrafted or hand-picked to ensure the finest of aging conditions. With Brugal 1888, the rum’s unique flavors shine through and are not overwhelmed by the sweetness generally associated with rum; it is undoubtedly a world class rum.

LIANA FUENTE The Heiress

Carlos Fuente Jr. is part of this unbelievable tradition as the Creative Marketing Director for the company. We were lucky enough to sit down with Liana to discuss her love of cigars as part of the most revered name in the cigar industry. SM: What’s the most cherished cigar you have in your humidor? LF: I would say the 8-5-8 is my most cherished cigar for several reasons. It’s my great grandfather’s blend and honestly you can’t go wrong. It is consistent, always perfect to me from start to finish. I can smoke it first thing in the morning or smoke at night. Everything we make has our family’ name on it and I know all the hard work that goes into each blend. Each cigar is like our kid, but because of the meaning behind it, and all the work to keep the taste consistent all these years. I would defiantly say the 858. SM: What is your “go-to” cigar? LF: Right now it’s the Magnum R. It’s a medium to full bodied cigar, but to me it’s on the fuller side. It has a little more spice to it, and I in love with it.

rturo Fuente Cigars are some of the most sought after cigars on the market today with such gems as the Don Carlos, Anejo 77 , and the crown jewel Fuente Fuente Opus X. The company was founded in 1912 by Cuban immigrant, 24 year old Arturo Fuente. In 1924 tragedy struck when their facility caught fire. It was not until 1946 when Arturo Fuente could come back into this competitive yet declining market for cigars to hand over the reigns of the company to his youngest son Carlos Fuente Sr. Only 2 years after he took control of the company, The United States embargo on Cuba went into effect essentially halting all production. After moving the company to Nicaragua in the 1970s, disaster struck once more and their facility was burned down during the Nicaraguan Revolution. Carlos Fuente Sr. and Carlos Fuente Jr., now an integral part of the company, scrapped up all the money they could and made a risky move to the Dominican Republic in 1980. It was not until the mid 80s when Arturo Fuente struck gold with the Hemingway line. Finally, the company had taken off and it eventually grew to the powerhouse it is today, creating some of the best cigars on the market. Liana Fuente, the daughter of 48 Stratosphere

SM: What’s the best cigar you ever smoked? LF: My dad has a little chest full of treasures, and when he’s not around, I get my hands in it. It’s like unlocking a vault full of undiscovered gems. I don’t know what it’s named, but it’s big and it’s bad and I loved it. It took me two days to recover, but it left me wanting more. I hope this isn’t recording because I know I’ll get in trouble. SM: What’s your most luxurious cigar accessory? LF: I’m not picky on that either, but I was given a Dupont lighter and it was engraved by my father. To me it’s not really the lighter but the meaning behind that. It’s not a lighter you let someone borrow. SM: Are there any new or limited edition cigars coming out? LF: Yes., two more lines. The truth is, last year we had a huge fire, and we lost so much precious aged tobacco. It was devastating to the family. Everything for our 100 year anniversary got pushed back to the following year. One of cigar lines will be called the Casa Cuba, which will come in 4 different sizes. It was supposed to come out on my grandfather’s birthday which is May 6th, but the packaging wasn’t perfect. My dad is a perfectionist, so if the cigars aren’t ready, we don’t put them out. But like I said, for us it’s not about cigars, it’s about the people. Every single cigar goes through so much quality control, 6 different points of inspection, and we go above and beyond to make sure everything is right and this goes along with packaging as well. The cigars are made, aged, and ready. My grandfather blended this cigar and blended it the “old school way”. It is a true masterpiece and the man is genius! n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

FERRETTI YACHTS 960 Ferretti Yachts’s New Flagship

F

erretti presents Ferretti Yachts 960, the largest planing pleasure boat ever designed and built by Ferretti Yachts . Registered as a CE craft below 24 metres in length, this new yacht develops further the design philosophy embraced by the brand over the last few years, maximising its concepts and contents with the aim of achieving an unprecedented product in its category. This is the core philosophy behind this new flagship, entirely built at Ferretti Group’s Cattolica shipyard. The Ferrretti Yachts 960 is the outstanding result of the close cooperation between the Group’s Product Strategy Committee and the Marketing Department, in cooperation with Ferrettigroup Engineering (the company’s 54 Stratosphere

team of engineers and architects, including some of the best in the naval design sector worldwide) and AYTD - Advanced Yacht Technology & Design (the Group’s naval research center), and Studio Zuccon International Project, which designs Ferretti’s entire range. This new yacht preserves the hull design and waterlines of the previous flagship, the Ferretti 881 - one of the most successful models for the brand -, while developing it further, thereby becoming the latter’s legitimate heir. Thanks to its 29.20-metre overall length and 23.98-metre hull length, the new flagship belongs to the CE design category and can therefore be managed as a pleasure boat, without requiring the presence of a professional captain, while offering impressive habitability and comfort compared to other models in its class. n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

Ferretti Yachts 960 makes the most of the layout concepts currently found even on larger models in its class: indeed, the new flagship is Ferretti Yachts’s first planing yacht boasting the master cabin forward, on the main deck, and as many as four guest cabins, all equally sized and with equivalent furnishings and fittings, located on the lower deck. The layout - of which alternative versions will be available so as to meet the needs of the various international markets on which the Group is currently present - also features three crew cabins with reserved access from the galley, a solution normally found on maxi-yachts only, ensuring the outmost privacy for the Owner. H

ow much technology do we need? A seemingly simple question but not necessarily a simple answer. Are we ever going to reach a point where we have ‘too much’ technology? Products and services are constantly improving as new technologies are utilized. This is true in all aspects of the automotive industry, and it has certainly been a good thing. Safety, performance and efficiency have been greatly improved in all road cars. So what can we expect from the world’s most race winning and respected sports car maker Ferrari? The all new LaFerrari, a supercar of unparalleled beauty and technology. “We chose to call this model LaFerrari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “Because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. Aimed at our collectors, this is a truly extraordinary car which encompasses advanced solutions that, in the future, will find their way onto the rest of the range, and it represents the benchmark for the entire automotive industry. LaFerrari is the finest expression of our company’s unique engineering and design know-how, including that acquired in Formula 1.” The LaFerrari is the successor to the famed Enzo model and features an 800hp V12 engine that revs to 9,250 rpm. Its’ peak torque of 516 lb-ft is reached at 6,750 rpm. In addition to the V12 monster behind the cockpit the LaFerrari also utilizes a 163hp/199 lb-ft electric motor. Total combined output is a very impressive 963 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. With all of this power on tap, Ferrari says that the LaFerrari can scoot to 60 mph in less than three seconds and hit 124 mph in under seven seconds, and will keep accelerating at an astonishing rate (186 mph in 15 seconds) until it reaches a top speed of 217 mph. Ferrari calls their innovative hybrid technology HY-KERS. HY meaning hybrid and KERS being their acronym for Kinetic Energy Recovery System. This Formula 1 Racing derived system recharges the onboard batteries in two ways. One is through the recovery of energy from the vehicles braking system and the second is utilizing a portion of the V12 engine’s torque. No less impressive is the LaFerrari’s interior and exterior styling. The bodylines are aggressive yet graceful. The layout of the interior is very modern, but continues in Ferrari’s rich tradition of fine craftsmanship and luxurious materials. Ferrari plans to build only 499 examples. Understandably this is not a car for the masses, however it is enlightening to see Ferrari devote considerable engineering resources and employ their Motorsports experience to develop technologies that continue to push automotive excellence to new heights while improving their entire product line. LaFerrari, a masterpiece! 56 Stratosphere

THE WORLD'S MOST REFINED AND CAPABLE LUXURY SUV

In the 1950s, King established himself as a powerful musical force, releasing multiple hits such as “You Know I Love You,” “Every Day I Have the Blues,” “Sneakin’ Around,” and “Please Accept My Love.” The self-proclaimed road warrior consistently satisfied fans at an average of 300 nights a year. After the release of 1960s hits “Sweet Sixteen,” “Got a Right to Love My Baby,” and “Partin’ Time,” King followed legends Lloyd Price and Ray Charles, joining ABC-Paramount Records. King reached infinite fame and admiration in 1969 with the crossover hit that defied mainstream music. “The Thrill Is Gone,” was a soulful departure from his earlier hits and reached the pop audience with his authentic R&B sound. As “The Thrill Is Gone” landed at the top of pop music charts, it engendered memorable appearances on shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and American Band Stand. King later went on to collaborate with artists like Eric Clapton and U2 in addition to his flourishing solo career, pioneering pop culture mainstream for blues musicians. With 74 entries on the Billboard’s R&B charts, B.B. King’s infamous guitar style of blues, jazz, and swing makes him one of the single most important electric guitarists to have struck a chord across the music industry. He has influenced generations of artists like Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and thousands more.

B.B. King has defined the world of blues for over half a century. His music is enriched with the southern traditional blues style of the Mississippi Delta, where he grew up as a sharecropper before hitchhiking his way to Memphis. From the Southern musical circuit to soaring symphony concert halls, Blues Boy King, formerly known as Riley B. King, is one of the world’s most recognizable music legends. His infamous bent guitar notes and gritty voice put him on the music industry map in 1948 with the Sonny Boy Williamson’s radio station in West Memphis.

King has received countless accolades over the years including seven Grammy Awards, an induction into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and the NARAS’ Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 1987. His legacy continues as the illustrious musician still tours, sharing his enduring talents with the world. It is evident that the thrill of B.B. King’s career has not gone… a true legacy never fades. her to a position that was front and center—a position that eventually had her shaking hands with Warren Buffet for the first time in media history.

LIZ CLAMAN

“When I went to meet with Warren Buffet, I tried to figure out what was important to him—and that turned out to be how a business functions. What makes a business special?” said Claman.

Constantly Reaching Beyond Her Grasp

“When I sat down with Warren, I found out that he was a lot like me. He had done his research on me and we talked about more than just balance sheets or stock prices. This is the kind of person he was and it’s the person that we profiled in The Billionaire Next Door.”

I

recently had a rare opportunity to conduct an exclusive interview with Fox News’ host of The Closing Bell and news anchor, Liz Claman. After I arrived at Fox Studios in Manhattan, went through security and was kindly escorted by her assistant to her office, I must admit, I was a little intimidated. After all, I was about to speak with a person who has interviewed some of the most important business professionals, CEO's and dignitaries in the world. Liz Claman has had the privilege to come face to face with such renowned names as Sir Richard Branson and Bill Gates, to name just a couple. Claman was also the first reporter to secure an exclusive interview with Warren Buffet, so you can see why my approaching opportunity was a bit daunting! As I walked into her office I was taken aback. She got up from her desk, greeted me with a firm, yet personable handshake and welcomed me with a kind smile, as if we had always been friends. As I looked around in awe at Claman’s office, I couldn't help but notice a wardrobe that would put most boutiques in Manhattan to shame, as well as a copious number of newspapers and flat screen televisions that displayed market information in real time. It was clear: this was the office of someone dedicated to her work.

60 Stratosphere

Achieving monumental successes like her exclusive interview with Warren Buffet was only a first step in Claman’s successful career. After nine years at CNBC, she chose to pull up roots and leave behind the then complacent job that she had earned, in favor of the unknown. And, so began her journey with Fox Business—an entity that hadn’t even been created when Claman arrived. I started my interview with Claman with a general question that I felt was important to understanding who she was: “how did you do what you do?” She told me all about her ideas—big and small— and how these ideas make it into her shows to become relevant to her viewers on a daily basis. “I keep a pad and paper near my bed to write down details,” said Claman. “I’ll wake up with an idea, write it down and look at it in the morning. I then start to think about how I can pitch this. The royal baby, for example, is not our story—it’s not a business story. But I started to think about collectable papers and how everyone wanted a shred of history when Princess Diana’s kids were born. Papers had great sales for years after that—and that’s a business angle to the royal baby story.” Claman’s mind works constantly and in an amazing capacity, thinking up new and innovative ways to tie world events into business topics, connecting ideas that aren’t readily seen by people.

“I am obsessed with finding the business angle in everything,” said Claman. “Everything ties back to a marketable idea and we just have to find that link.” n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

This idea is also evident in Claman’s own past. A Graduate of the University of California Berkley, she studied French, eventually turning this focus to business journalism. When I asked her how such a connection is made, Claman astounded me with her answer. “You can connect journalism with anything,” said Claman. “You need to see everything, not just the who, what, where, when, why and how. Lots of us (reporters) come from different backgrounds and that’s a good thing. If you’re only able to pull apart a balance sheet, you’re not going to be able to tell the story of a business that started in a garage and became Hewlett-Packard. I thought I was going to be a diplomat, until I got my third-class FCC license and started to read the news on the radio for the Phillip’s Academy, an Andover Prep School.” This was the birth of Claman’s renaissance attitude towards education. At Berkley, she delved into broadcast and from there, the idea of a worldly education was something that stuck with her and still plays an instrumental role in her professional life. In fact, it was this concept of knowing the whole picture, of seeing the unseen, that led her to CNBC. Claman’s knack for immersing herself in the details catapulted n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

“I realized that I could reach higher,” said Claman. “My reach is here, but my grasp is way up there. I wanted to reach higher. The easy thing to do was to stay comfortable, but I told myself to take that chance and see what would become of it.” At Fox Business—a startup in its truest sense—Claman has found her passion. From the creation of her own mobile app, to coverage on topics that would have never been available to her at an established network, she is thriving in true entrepreneurial fashion. The opportunities have been bountiful at Fox Business and Claman has taken no time in securing some of the biggest business stories in the last few years, including a segment entitled Three Days in the Valley. “Fox Business was in deep competition when it came to speaking with Silicone Valley CEOs and other company heads,” said Claman. “We had to fight to even get an interview, so we decided to create our own show. That’s how Three Days in the Valley came to be—we would pick up stakes and move around the Valley, interviewing people that had been ignored for years, discovering all of these stories that no one else was covering. We got in touch with everyone and what we got out of it was Google, eBay, Yahoo!, along with enough media attention to have other companies coming directly to us.” Stratosphere 61

Take Your Team To New Heights

Thanks to Claman’s efforts, Fox Business has been at the ground floor of companies like Pandora, Twitter, Flipboard and others that are now common vernacular in everyday life. As the show enters its sixth year, it’s now recognized as a standard in tech reporting and business journalism. Being involved and pioneering these hard-hitting segments has made Claman something of an authority when it comes to predicting the future of business in America. Looking at the issues surrounding things like SEC authority, Claman’s objective view of the business behind this controversial topic makes for clarity as it’s reported to the multitudes of viewers that she garners on a daily basis.

Improve leadership skills Boost profitability Increase customer focus Create a safer workplace Retain critical talent

“I don’t think that the SEC has too much power. It’s unfair to paint an organization with a brush that’s made from only their bad examples,” said Claman. “At the same time, I think there are enough people who aren’t doing their jobs. Look at Bernie Madoff or Fannie May. The SEC was led to Bernie Madoff with a flashlight and a map and still, he was able to continue his Ponzi scheme. Two hundred people supervised Fanny May and look how that turned out!” Claman’s encompassing approach to American economy also touches fiscal matters that are far from being centered on a single organization or company. Regarding the economic crisis in Detroit and the prospect of government bailout intervention, Claman’s passion for finding the truth has uncapped feelings from both sides of the debate. “I thought the auto industry bailout was a great thing because it booted old school management who had gotten into trouble in the first place. Detroit is a hairy situation because it has fallen into the same trap time and time again. We need business leaders who will go in and work for free. We need to declare bankruptcy and keep an eye on every penny moving forward—it can’t just be a blank check. It has to be something we’ve never seen before: people from MIT and major accounting firms keeping track of the money. Start over.” It takes a unique person with a no excuses attitude to be on top of their game 24/7 and Liz Claman has proven herself to be that person. A dedicated mother, wife, author, triathlon athlete, anchor and one of the best financial reporters in the industry, it’s clear that we’ve seen amazing things from her work and will continue to as long as she’s on the job. As she puts it simply, “never done.” 62 Stratosphere

L

iving in New York City sometimes makes it difficult to get to the golf course. I decided to go on a quest and explore the golf options in the city that never sleeps. Some of these you may be able to find in your city.

First I have been meaning to get fitted for new clubs and this was a great time to go in and take the time to try what is new on the market and actually see and feel the difference. Golfsmith on 5th Avenue in NYC has three hitting bays and staff members that are certified as master club fitters. You can drop by anytime they are open and meet with a fitter or make an appointment in advance. I was able to try hitting with various clubs in the simulator and discover which clubs felt the best and were best for my game. I ended up with Taylor Made Men’s senior clubs because of my height. Something I would not have thought of or known was an option had I not seen someone who can really evaluate my swing and suggest different things. Fifth Ave. between 37th & 38th Street New to NYC is Golf & Body, an amazing state of the art golf gym that offers all the amenities of a high end gym with the feel of a country club. The notable amazing feature is the ability to have the same services as a touring PGA Pro. They have professional staff members that are the best in the business including swing coaches, physical trainers and a therapy department. The unique quality is each department communicates with each other about each client. So if you have a back ailment the therapy professionals will discuss this with both the trainer and swing coach then allowing each to assist the client as needed. Ben Shear is the head golf fitness professional and has developed a system to evaluate and implement golf-specific fitness. I met with Zeon Dolnyckyj, the head trainer under Ben who took me through a personal assessment and how he and the trainers work with the swing coach and therapy group to create a specific program for each individual. Then Jared Seitters, golf professional, took me through some swing analysis on the HD Golf video in one of the high tech simulators, which produces images that look like a golf sonogram. There are a number of them in the club that members can just use themselves or take lessons with a pro. This allowed me to review my swing and save it in the computer as well enabling any of the training professionals to review it at any time. The very luxurious interior makes you feel as if you are in high end country club. 6th Ave & 32nd St. www.golfbodynyc.com 64 Stratosphere

Let us introduce your child to a Founding Father who will electrify their imagination.

Another option in the heart of Soho is Drive 495. This is golf gym has a hip modern feeling with the warmth of a family. Largely because this golf specific gym was started by two brothers Don & Joe Saladino who really live the golf and fitness regime. Don is certified fitness professional and Joe regularly competes at a high level in National Amateur events and has been named Metropolitans Player of the Year multiple times. They are very focused on the combination of nutrition, fitness and golf and offer state of the art fitness equipment and golf instruction with well trained professionals in both fields. The Golf Club at Chelsea Piers is an amazing place to practice you game with 52 heated and weather protected hitting stalls on four levels and an automatic ball tee-up system, no bending required to tee up the ball, all overlooking the Hudson River. One of my favorite times to go is for the Friday Night Swings. This is combination of happy hour on the Hudson with golf. Open wine & beer bar while you mingle and rotate through the stalls as well as receive instruction from their teaching pros. 6:30- 8pm Fridays. Fee of $30. Pier 59 - 18th St. & Hudson River Park. www. chelseapiers.com Randall’s Island is a great option if you want to golf outdoors. This 25-acre facility overlooks the East River and uptown Manhattan and is easy to get to with a shuttle that runs frequently from 3rd Ave. It has 82 hitting stalls on two levels, grass tees, short game area with bunker, golf lessons with Pros on site, golf clinics, a pro shop, a beer garden and grill and for a bit more fun a 36 hole landscaped miniature golf course. The shuttle van goes up 3rd Avenue and stops at 72nd,77th, 86th & 96th Streets and takes about 20 minutes .Open until 10pm every night, seven days a week. www.randallsislandgolfcenter.com So if you can’t get to the course there are plenty of options for golf in NYC. This list would not be complete without a great 19th hole establishment. St. Andrews Restaurant & Bar is close to the always colorful Times Square however once you enter there is an authentic Scottish experience waiting for you including plenty of golf memorabilia and scotch. West 46th St. between 6th Ave & Broadway. n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

here can you find a gorgeous beach, all inclusive amenities, 1485 lavish rooms, a 45,000 square foot casino, an 18 hole Jack Nicklaus golf course, an opulent state of the art spa and live concerts by famed artists like Enrique Iglesias? Those features and more are all located at the ultra-hip Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana, DR. Gone are the days where everything quiets down at 9pm at an island resort. Hard Rock has made it their mission to indulge their clientele in entertainment, gaming, and sports activities as well as highlight the all-inclusive dining features luxury Caribbean resorts have been known for.

The Hard Rock resort has 13 unique restaurants, 4 trendy bars, a super chic night club, children’s activity center, 12 outdoor pools, and wedding packages designed by famous wedding planner to the stars, Colin Cowie.

Each of their over the top rooms are classified as suites. Their entry level suite is over 781 square feet and includes a double Jacuzzi, in room stocked mini bar, 24 hour room service, free wifi and LCD TV with satellite. Because Punta Cana has seen a huge spike in tourism over the last decade, the government has completed several projects to entice visitors to travel to the Dominican. In 2012, major road work resulted in a sleek new highway that now allows travelers to fly into Santo Domingo, La Romana or Punta Cana and now have less than an hour drive between destinations. No longer do vacationers have to dread a 3 hour drive from the airport. With more choices of airports to fly into, travelers have more options thus providing more competition for reduced airfare prices. The Dominican Republic has been a leader in tourism over the past 15 years and the calm Caribbean waters along Punta Cana’s famous beaches create an idyllic vacation setting. With the addition of the Hard Rock Resort, Punta Cana now has a world class casino and their 14,000 square foot Club Oro nightclub which transforms this sleepy beach town into one of the trendiest spots south of Miami! 66 Stratosphere

Pat also hosts the WCBS Health & Wellbeing Report and has a weekly column for the Intercounty Newspaper Group in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. She spent twenty years in the Philadelphia market at KYW Newsradio, KYW-TV and WWDB Radio. She was awarded the Broadcast Pioneeer’s Lifetime Achievement Award and multiple winner of the Associated Press Best Newscast Award in Pennsylvania as well as the Best Feature Award for her show “Do I Look Ok?” which was syndicated on fifty stations in the U.S. and Virgin Islands.

She has been on the air at Dow Jones Radio One, WMGK in Philadelphia, WNBC, WINS and WYNY in NY and 72 Stratosphere

anchored the evening news on WKBS-TV in Philly, which she swears was the inspiration for the movie “UHF” starring Weird Al Yankovic. Pat and her husband Louis are currently working on a garden and courtyard. They are building it around a fountain they bought on their honeymoon in Italy. SM: Tell us about your youth, growing up in the Lehigh Valley… PF: To me, it really was like the movie "American Graffitti" only set in Pennsylvania instead of California. I lived in the country (outside Bath), with four younger brothers and a pony, I attended Sacred Heart School of Bath. SM: How did you get started in broadcasting? PF: While in college, I began hanging around the local radio station and one day, a disc jockey didn't show up. I was nineteen and I never looked back. Crazy as it sounds, the magic I felt 'way back when, has never left me. n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m

SM: How did you land at CBS NY? PF: It's a case study in never burning your bridges, as much as it is luck, timing and serendipity. I got a call out of the blue from a wonderful man, Frank Raphael, the News Director at that time with WCBS in NY. I always admired him but hadn't spoken to him in over a decade, maybe longer. He was looking for an afternoon anchor and tracked me down.

SM: What is a typical day on & off air? PF: I have a wonderful balance in my life. I live on seven acres in Bucks County. After taking care of our golden retriever, my husband and I take the 5:44 am Amtrak train to the Apple. I like to either hop on the subway or walk the two miles to he WCBS studios downtown in the West Village. I usually do interviews and put together my daily health and Well Being reports which run both in New York and Washington. Then, I begin writing my 10:00am show. I am on the air from 10:00am until 2:00pm. We cover all news and it's a wonderful mix of local, national and international happenings. Even after all this time, I am still jazzed to be on the air. My four hour shift feels like twenty minutes. SM: Who was your favorite interview? PF: I would have to say, it's a tie between Ronald Reagan and the Nobel prize winner Elie Wiesel. Although, the most fun was the comedian John Candy.

SM: Who is the one person you would like to interview? PF: Gov. Christie. I have done a quick LIVE interview with him, but, I am working on doing something more in depth. Also, Pope Francis would be intriguing. And Fidel Castro, although he has been known to do five hour speeches.

SM: What are some of your most memorable moments in broadcasting? PF: There are so many great moments, since I have been covering every major event in the last thirty plus years - like a ringside seat to history. A troubling moment however was when a Pennsylvania official, Budd Dwyer committed suicide during a press conference. We were about to carry a report from the scene but I watched the monitor in horror, as the tragedy unfolded.

admire and look up to and why? PF: Edward R. Murrow and uncle Walter Cronkite, of course. Dan Rather because he is so dangerous.

SM: What do you do to escape the hustle & bustle of NYC? PF: I go home to our farm in Bucks County

SM: When and how did you get interested in aviation and becoming a pilot? PF: I have always been mesmerized with the thrill and the freedom of flying and how grateful and blessed I feel soaring over the earth under my own power and control.

SM: What’s the next big thing? PF: I would love to host a show with a different guest every week where we would have a conversation on camera over a marvelous dinner.

SM: Tell us something about yourself that even close friends might not know... PF: I guess I am pretty boring. Although. I have known tragedy in my life, I am now such a happy camper.

Rittenhouse Refined Revisions to the iconic hotel

F

or nearly twenty-five years, The Rittenhouse Hotel has captured the attention of Philadelphia travelers with its timeless elegance, personalized service, exceptional culinary experiences and accommodations just steps from the prestigious Rittenhouse Square. Recently, Philadelphiabased Hersha Hospitality Trust purchased the landmark hotel and invested an additional $10 million reviving the iconic brand. The design concepts of internationally renowned designer, Alexandra Champalimaud, will evoke the spirit and traditions of years past while offering a refined contemporary experience to the Rittenhouse guest. The first in a series of enhancements to the luxury hotel is the unveiling of its new Library Bar and expanded Afternoon Tea service held in the hotel’s famed Mary Cassatt Tea Room. The Library Bar offers a chic and sophisticated new design, which speaks to the hotel’s place in Philadelphia history. A Macassar ebony bar with Carrara marble top and herringbone-patterned oak floor comprise the bar area. An etched mirror across the center of the back bar displays a map of old Philadelphia accompanied by top shelf spirits. Adjacent to the bar area is a cozy lounge complete with a carefully curated collection of books and fine art, a limestone fireplace and an amazing black glass chandelier. Fractional Ownership VS. CHARTER

Attorneys Gregory C. Hartman Christopher J. Hartman Andrew N. Howe Cheryl J. Allerton Charles N. Shurr, Jr. Elizabeth A. Magovern

A

ccording the to the FAA and recent information derived from Aviation International News, American charter flights increased almost 9 percent from August 2012 to July 2013 over the same period as the year before. Charter’s growth comes at the expense of fractional aircraft flying. With the overall fractional market down 8.5% a good deal of this is attributed to Avantair and Citationair unwinding operations in the fractional market. With the continued decline in growth of the fractional companies and less flying time in part 91 operations, it is apparent the recipient of additional revenue and increased operations is indeed the charter business. It now appears that the charter business has stabilized and has begun to grow incrementally. It has also soured the view of those individuals that once believed that fractional ownership was a smarter way to fly. With fixed costs escalating and DOCs (direct operating costs) at all time highs, the charter market has been much more resilient and capable of adapting to changes in the market. The fractional companies with their structured ownership have limitations as to what is right for today’s market as they may still be set in the past with past operating mentality and unable to adapt to the quickly changing dynamics of equipment, fuel fluctuations and personnel. In most cases charter companies are smaller and more nimble and are more attuned to the pulse of the aviation market. And, in some cases have even partnered up with major manufactures to sole source particular aircraft. Today, the charter guys understand the customer’s needs. They realize the client has other choices and are not locked into their particular company, so they have become 82 Stratosphere

creative in doing things that fractional companies cannot seem to understand. In some cases charter companies are in lock step with airlines to provide individual services to the airlines high end clients by providing services to areas where the airline cannot fly. Others have offer exclusive clubs for frequent charterer’s, similar to fractional ownership, but without the commitment. Still others have employed aggressive pricing techniques that have, in general created a more robust pricing structure for charters and creating an economic gap for the fractional owners.

Potential owners looking at the fractional market are beginning to understand that if they don’t have the flying hours to fully own an aircraft, then they don’t have the need to deal with ownership when charter is more realistic in its pricing. Simply put, you pay for what you get and with no surprise. In fractional ownership you help pay for someone else and still have the surprises. With major fractional ownership companies going from four to two, it is apparent there are chinks in the armor that once was thought of as the answer to all private aviation needs. With their ability to quickly adapt and still meet the clients needs and the equipment the client requires in a short time frame, it is no wonder that charter has once again proven to be the more resilient offering in the stable of aircraft offering. n e w w o r l d av i at i o n.c o m
