WELCOME TO

M

iddlebury is a town of beauty and hospitality nestled in Northern Indiana Amish Country just minutes south of I 80/90 exit 107, two hours east of Chicago. Shops throughout town reflect our heritage by offering locally made quilts, crafts and furniture. Life happens at a slower pace; here visitors will enjoy a stroll up and down Main Street listening to the clip-clop of buggies passing by. Savor the locally-made specialties, fresh pies, cheeses, noodles, honey and smoked meats that can be purchased throughout the area. Just up the hill from downtown you can pull up a chair at the state’s largest restaurant. Serving home-style Amish-Mennonite fare in a family-style setting, you won’t go away hungry. Plan an overnight visit at one of Middlebury’s delightful Bed & Breakfasts or in a charming full-service Inn. The area has so much to offer you may just decide to stay. Close-by destinations include; Nappanee, Shipshewana, Goshen, Elkhart and Notre Dame/South Bend. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast or just need a little fresh air, don’t miss a stop at Middlebury’s fine parks offering many opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Krider’s World’s Fair Garden Park, a state historic site, displays an explosion of flowers in one of Middlebury’s four Quilt Gardens, giant toadstools plus great picnic spots. Krider Garden provides its visitors with easy access to the Pumpkinvine Trail. Memorial and East Parks at Town Center afford town visitors a chance to relax there and share a picnic as well. East of downtown, the River Bend Park offers playground equipment, fishing opportunities, a covered picnic area and an excellent trail system. Head north out of town just a few short minutes to visit the 223-acre Bonneyville Mill County Park, home to Indiana’s oldest operating grist mill. Millers are on hand daily to show guests the flour grinding process. Take some home for your baking.

uring your visit, spend time on the back roads to uncover the simpler lifestyle of the area’s 1,100-plus Amish families. One-room schoolhouses and Amish farms dot the countryside. Amish shops can be found on the outskirts of town, some of which you can now find on the Countryside Shoppes map, see fold out. They offer handmade furniture, outdoor accessories, natural food products and produce straight from the gardens. The Heritage Trail has free CDs available at the Elkhart Photo courtesy of Elkhart County CVB County Convention and Visitors Bureau. If you prefer, a free MP3 download contains that same information at www.AmishCountry.org for your upcoming visit. elcome! Welkom! Come on in! However you may say it in your homes, know that you are always welcome to join us in our hometown. We look forward to sharing the foods, the stores and the beautiful outdoors of Middlebury with each and every one of you anytime you can come. Anytime is special here — particularly so during our two festivals. The first festival of the year is our Summer Festival taking place on August 14 & 15 in 2015. Focusing on family fun and musical entertainment, this festival features one of the best small town parades you’ll ever see on a Saturday afternoon. Our Fall Festival on September 18 & 19 features not only area artisans and craftsmen, but excellent musical entertainment, children’s activities, a corn-hole contest, 3-on-3 basketball tourney and a thrill-packed fireworks display on Friday evening, September 18. Come see and share in the joy of living in this great community as we celebrate our regional heritage and community spirit. Bikers, runners and walkers alike are singing the praises of the second season of the Middlebury connections to the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. Middlebury is at the center of this scenic, paved trail now enabling participants to travel at their pace from Shipshewana to Middlebury to Goshen. Organizations are continuing to improve the informational signage around town for the thousands we anticipate using this greenway that runs right through Middlebury. Reported usage in 2014 was over 80,000 — a great number we look to surpass in 2015! Of course, each and every one of you is invited to stop in Middlebury for a rest, a bite to eat and some scouting of our business community that you’ll want to come back to visit in depth. We’ve not yet even mentioned our four Quilt Gardens along the Heritage TrailSM and three Quilt Garden murals in 2015. The businesses and organizations presenting these Gardens donate time, materials and their love of the outdoors to all who come to share in the delicate beauty of these intricate floral designs.

Please be sure to thank the folks at Krider Garden, Dutch Country Market, Das Dutchman Essenhaus and Martin’s Ace Hardware for the joy their efforts bring you and yours. The murals will be at Town Center facing Warren Street and Das Dutchman Essenhaus. Do not miss any of the Quilt Gardens along the Heritage TrailSM, which can be seen all around Elkhart County. Middlebury’s 3rd Fridays celebrations held at Town Center from May to December are often marked by special food offerings, free music presentations and special business promotions. Come join in the fun! The amazingly popular Classic Car Cruise-In at Das Dutchman Essenhaus returns each Thursday evening from May through September. Come find your favorite classic and take advantage of the specials the restaurant and shops will be offering each week. Our innkeepers answer every need for one of the most comfortable stays you’ll experience anywhere. Foods from our restaurants satisfy with touches of home and days gone by in the wholesomeness of their meals. You’ll savor each bite and relaxing moment as you feel the tension of the busy week just slip away. In addition to classic cars and celebrations, you’ll find our Middlebury merchants bring visitors the highest quality in everything from specialty candies and food items, quilt supplies, fabrics, household and personal gift ideas, finely crafted furniture, unique consignment stores, and the latest boutique fashions for the ladies in your life. You can find detailed information on Middlebury and the Quilt Gardens locations by visiting the Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau website at www.AmishCountry.org or the Middlebury Chamber of Commerce website, MiddleburyINChamber.com. Whether you’re coming for the very first time, or 31st time, know you are always welcome to this special place we are privileged to call home — Middlebury, Indiana.
