LEO DE JANEIRO It is Chinese New Year and colossal papier mâché lions glide and whirl among the cramped spectators, seizing luscious green lettuce leaves from outside shop vendor’s establishments as they pass, dancing to the rhythmic beat of a drum. Jim Thompson, always charmed by such spectacles, was drawn to the vivid colours and excitement found in Thai carnivals and festivities. He was captivated by how Bangkok transfigured when the dazzling, coloured lights started to glow at nightfall and the city came to life. Jim Thompson had a special appreciation for Asian art and culture, particularly exquisite Chinese ceramics and lacquer screens. Thompson loved to travel and was fascinated by the celebrations and festivities in far-flung, exotic and historically rich destinations around the world. For January 2017, Ou Baholyodhin’s collection celebrates this marriage of culture and travel, which is vividly encapsulated in the title Leo de Janeiro, the iconic Chinese lion dance, during the ultimate carnival. Ou plays on themes and symbols from Chinese culture, such as the mythical lion that brings good fortune, to folklore and festivities. Other sources of influence include the recurrent bamboo motifs, a subtle ode to nature; meaning ‘to congratulate’ in Chinese and symbolising longevity and vitality. The collection features vibrant carnivalesque colours and graphic patterns and prints, with shades inspired by tropical flowers, as well as exotic fauna and traditional, vernacular art. Leo de Janeiro is a true celebration of rich colour, tradition, culture, exoticism, travel and nature.

For his first outdoor collection for Jim Thompson, Ou Baholyodhin has returned to nature and a vacationing lifestyle for inspiration. This transpires through the vivid exotic colours, representative of tropical island life; and the unique and contradicting landscapes, the essence of which have been captured and transformed into sturdy dual-purpose fabrics. The joys of travel are also a key source of influence, alongside the fascinating, vibrant and sublime aesthetics we uncover as curious travelers. Negresco demonstrates that opulent outdoor fabrics can be created without compromising on quality or style, made evident from the luxurious outdoor velvet and the bold colourways and prints manifested on sumptuous, durable textiles. The fabrics featured in this collection have been specially treated and some have been created using high performance, Dralon acrylic yarns, to guarantee the highest durability.
