We are all very excited here at Wilderness Reserve! ‘Led by the land’ was the starting point and where it began a couple of years ago, with Kim Wilkie once again working his magic on the landscape. At last, our restoration of some old church barns, the building of a couple of farmhouses and some tiny retreats have finally been completed to form our latest exclusive holiday hideaway. It looked a gargantuan and daunting task, but over the years we have become more and more involved with local craftsmen, trades people and materials and so it has come together by drawing on this wealth of generations of expertise. It has been an amazingly collaborative project. We’ve been working with the most inventive bricklayers, carpenters, stonemasons, plasterers and pargetters, who were willing to try anything. In many instances apprentices were employed and thus skills gradually are being passed on. Local materials were key, huge windblown oaks being used to make unusual tables and furniture – nothing wasted. A handful of these properties – our ‘spa houses’ – have pools, saunas and hot tubs, along with rooms for spa treatments. Even our electricity free cottage inspires a sense of wellbeing not easily found. There is one element that transforms the end result – the land – throughout we have continued our commitment to the land, from helping bees to planting trees, it is wonderful English nature at its best.
