A bicycle, kayak or pair of hiking boots are perfect for anyone who loves to get out into nature under their own steam. Actually, you can start anywhere in Åland and you’ll always find amazing routes to roam. You can choose to stay in one place and make day trips wherever the wind blows you or make it a longer trip, with several overnight stays along the way. The St. Olav Waterway, which stretches right across the whole of Åland, is one way to go. Guided pilgrimages are also offered along the Waterway. PILGRIMS MAKING THE TREK by bicycle follow granite red roads through the countryside and villages. And, when the road ends at the water’s edge, you’ll continue your journey on an inter-island ferry. It’s easy to make lovely looping detours along the way. Depending on how you plan your route, you’ll discover everything from castles and medieval churches to cafés and farm shops. A lovely little three-hour tour can be made by starting at Käringsund, paddling around Främstön and Mellanön islands and then returning through Bredsund. Along this route, there are uninhabited areas where you can stop for a break. Or, you can set course for a local attraction, such as Kobba Klintar or Kastelholm Castle. There are also operators who hire out equipment and arrange guided tours.

ANYTHING YOU CAN DO ON or in the water you can do in Åland, and watersports such as surfing, kitesurfing and jet skiing are popular activities. You can bring along your own gear or rent it at your destination.

Come winter, just lace up a pair of long-distance skates and head out across the frozen expanses. If the winter is a good one, the season will be long. Lakes freeze up first, followed by bays, and then you’ll be able to glide out over the magical, frozen open sea. The diversity of nature and ability to quickly move from bay to peaceful bay and across wide open ice are also part of the appeal.

FORESTS AND NATURE are an experience unto themselves. You can actually plop yourself down on any log or rock you find, simply sit back and enjoy the show. You can even take a “forest bath”! If you’re a bit more on the active side, you can experience nature by taking a stroll on a nature path or trekking on a longer hiking trail.

Forest terrain and a horse or mountain bike will get you moving and a give you a healthy dose of fresh air. There is no shortage of forest roads and trails for active horseback riders and cyclists to choose from. The Eckerö mountain bike trail includes a three-kilometre long beginner section with beautiful views and exciting jumps. Bikers who want to challenge themselves can try to beat the trail record using the Strava training app.
