AUTONOMOUS ISLANDS WITH OWN LEGISLATION Åland is a Swedish-speaking, autonomous province in Finland. In other words, a small state within a state. Åland has the right to pass laws in a number of spheres, including education, traffic, healthcare and business. Åland has its own flag and its own postal services and stamps. Cowslip is the national flower. The statue of Julius Sundblom stands on the town square of Mariehamn. Sundblom was the first speaker of the first Åland Parliament. Behind his statue stands Åland’s administrative centre, Självstyrelsegården, a white marble Parliament House with offices for the 30 members of Parliament, and for the Åland Government authorities. The Parliament House can be visited on guided tours. Åland’s Autonomy Day is celebrated on 9 June with a festive programme by the statue of Julius Sundblom.

Åland has a population of almost 30,000 people, and around 11,000 of them live in Åland’s only town, Mariehamn. Åland is international. Thanks to shipping, Åland’s most important source of income, the Ålanders have always had close con tacts to other countries beyond the seas. Today many people choose to move to Åland from countries in Europe and beyond.

EVENTS

MUSIC EVENTS ALL YEAR ROUND Concerts and festivals of different music styles succeed one another in Åland. Rockoff is the islands’ biggest festival and the line-ups this summer include Anastacia, among others.

Tungevaag & Raaban. When the music stops at midnight the party continues indoors in restaurants and pubs in Mariehamn.

The nine-day Rockoff Festival has its steady place in Åland’s festival calendar. The entire city is characterized by the festival atmosphere. The stage stands in the middle of the town square and the festival area has one area for guests under 18 and one for adults. You can also dine at the two-storey VIP restaurant and enjoy the best view of the stage. Every festival day the programme starts in the afternoon and there are several artists performing one after another. The family-friendly festival programme offers music for every taste. This year’s line-ups are for example Anastacia, Chris Kläfford, Kapten Röd, Mendez, Freddy Kalas and

Åland Organ Festival and Katrina Chamber Music Festival are treats for classical music lovers. This year’s theme for Katrina concerts is “Bach and the women”. Most of the festival concerts will be arranged in Åland’s beautiful medieval churches.

EVENTS

ÅLAND SEA DAYS AND VIKING FAIR Åland Sea Days and Viking Fair are two of Summer-Åland’s most popular events for all in the family. The Sea Days offer programme day and night. The major focus is on maritime activities, including kayak excursions, sailing ship cruises, bark boat building, demonstrations of boat engines, and maritime safety. The Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn is the high quarter for the maritime-themed days and here you can take a look at the beautiful wooden boats. The Sea Days also stand for good music. In the evenings the quaysides are filled with people listening and dancing to live music. Market stalls tempt with street food and beverages of all kinds. For example, try a ”Ledholmare”, a fresh and tasty herring burger!

THREE DAYS WITH THE VIKINGS

The Viking Fair in Saltvik is one of the largest Viking events in Europe. New Viking house replicas have been built in the village, and a Viking ship Borge Swyn was launched here for a couple of years ago. Here you can meet Viking societies from east and west. Stroll around and meet Viking crafters, musicians and warriors in their period costumes and enjoy the atmosphere. Don’t forget to taste some Viking-inspired food and beverages. Jesters, children’s theatre plays and battle demonstrations make the Viking Fair an event for the whole family.

COOKING FALU RED PAINT How do you cook traditional falu red paint over open fire? How do you churn butter and make ropes in an old way? Every Wednesday in July, crafters demonstrate how yesterday’s Ålanders used to manufacture everyday utensils and materials. Here you can see, among other things, how to bake bread, churn butter and make ropes according to traditional methods. In a large cauldron over an open fire, water, iron vitriol and rye flour are mixed into a fine consistency and ”seasoned” with colour pigment. The paint is allowed to cook for hours before it can be used for painting a house. Stroll amidst the old red houses at the open-air museum and breathe in the atmosphere!

FOR CHILDREN

Jan Karlsgården also offers activities for children. On Thursdays in July the kids are

welcome to bake sweet buns in the woodheated baking oven of the little bakery cottage. And yes, you get to taste what you’ve baked! Four days a week in July, kids can do crafts either outdoors in the yard or indoors in a little cottage. Three Tuesdays in July, Frode and Niklas Lantz read Astrid Lindgren’s book ”Rasmus and the Vagabond” in Swedish. You will also hear one or two songs.

JAN KARLSGÅRDEN, 2 May–16 Sept daily 10–17. www.kastelholm.ax Crafts days on Wednesdays in July at 11–16. Kids’ sweet bun bakery on Thursdays in July at 12–15. Crafts for kids Mon, Tue, Wed & Fri in July at 11–16.30. “Rasmus and the Vagabond” (Swedish) on 17, 24 & 31 July at 13.

ELVIS AND ELIZA GO ÅLANDIC Flower girl Eliza and My Fair Lady will be staged in Åland in November. In April we will hear Elvis Presley songs performed by Ålandic soloists and a large choir. Many of Elvis’ songs, e.g. Love Me Tender, Always on My Mind and Devil in Disguise, are immortal. When Ålands Projektkör choir takes on Elvis music, a unique experience is guaranteed. Elvis’ songs are not very often heard in choir repertoires. Soloists, dancers and orchestras will deliver a full-bodied experience. The choir is led by music teacher, singer and initiator Johanna Grüssner. The orch estra is directed by Michael Ottosson who has also arranged the songs for the choir. The choir has also previously performed similar type of repertoires, including music by Queen and from the film Lion King. In other words, the choir boasts routine and joy of singing.

GOLF IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS Åland is a well-known golf island with three 18-hole golf courses. There is also a fun minigolf course. “Finland’s best 36-hole course.” “Finland’s most charming golf course.” These were two of the comments Åland Golf Club received in the Finnish national golf course ranking 2017, surveyed by GolfDigest, Golflehti and Golfpiste. Here you can play on two 18-hole courses – Castle Course and King’s Course – and on the Princess Course with six short holes. At Kastelholm there is also a wellstocked pro-shop, driving ranges and a restaurant.

ECKERÖ GOLF COURSE

There is an 18-hole golf course also in Kyrkoby in Eckerö. Guest golfers with a green card and a golf club membership are welcome. There is a driving range, and showers in the club house.

EXCURSIONS TO UNIQUE ISLANDS Rödhamn, Lågskär and Kobba Klintar are three unique islands to be visited.

The present lighthouse on Lågskär was built in 1920.

For a long time ago, Rödhamn’s islands had a strategic location next to an important navigation route. The islands have many interesting stories and remnants from the bygone days. Rödhamn was a base for pilots and lighthouse keepers. Today the old radio beacon houses a museum and offers a magnificent view over the sea. Rödhamn also offers a popular visitors’ marina with a summer café and restaurant.

FOR PILOTS

EXTREME LIVING CONDITIONS

The lighthouse island of Lågskär is situated halfway between Åland and the coast of Sweden. There lived up to 30 persons on the barren island in the middle of the sea. The living conditions were harsh especially in wintertime when the islanders were isolated from the main island for several months.

The island of Kobba Klintar, positioned on the approaches to Mariehamn, was an important pilot station with the vast open sea as its closest neighbour. Today there is a café and a beacon with culture events in summertime.

TAXI BOATS

Several taxi boat companies offer archipelago excursions. In the peak season there are regular daily boat transfers to Kobba Klintar.

ACTIVITIES

BOOK A SPORTS EVENT Join a cross-country running event when in Åland. There are many to choose from, for example the Kanonloppet Run. ”Kanonloppet” has been a must since the 1960s for every keen runner in Åland. The track starts from Markusböle in Finström and the finishing line is in Mariehamn. The 22.5km trail goes over a varied terrain – on seashore meadows, woodland and partly on asphalt. The fastest ones reach the line in one hour and 15 minutes, and the Sunday joggers can spend over three hours on the trail. For those who prefer power walking there is Ålandsmarschen walk following the same course. The walk is included in the Nordic hiking programme in which you can collect medals from different walks. Both events also offer a shorter 15km course. Those who wish to swim, go cycling or running can participate in Käringsund Triathlon that has series for both professionals and happy amateurs. Both events offer a shorter track of 15km.

MANY MORE

The Bomarsund Trail Run takes place amidst Russian fortress ruins, and Åland Marathon offers the perfect finishing off for the Nordic running season. The Marathon is arranged on a track around Mariehamn, and there are also shorter distances to choose from. There are several alternatives for those who wish to swim in open water or go cycling.

Follow the road towards Eckerö and turn left after about 4 km towards Kungsö and follow the signs along the road. During World War I, Russia constructed coastal batteries in Åland. At Dalsberg hill in Kungsö there were three cannons in a row and a hundred-metre-long battery mound. In addition to a large garrison building for hundreds of soldiers, several other buildings, such as stables, ware houses and bakeries, were built. Everything was de molished after the end of the war. On the hill there is a miniature model of the

building constructions. Here you will also find a lookout tower and a 4 km-long hiking trail marked with white-topped green poles. Take a picnic basket with you! There are picnic tables and benches.

Visit Ramsholmen’s nature reserve with wooded meadows on your way back to Mariehamn. The area is stunningly beautiful in spring and early summer when the white anemones and cowslips are blooming. The area has been named after ransom that flowers in early summer. RO-NO RENT, Österhamn, Mariehamn. Bicycles, mopeds, beach buggys, boats, canoes and life vests. Tel. +358 18 12820, www.rono.ax

ages. For kids there are several touch-andplay activities and a new play room called ”Ruby and the sea”.

The Herzogin Cecilie was a beautiful 4-masted sailing-ship that ran aground off the coast of England in 1936. The ship was owned by the Ålandic shipowner Gustaf Erikson, and the captain onboard was Sven Eriksson, also from Åland. The grounding made front-page news for a long time, not least in British newspapers. All efforts to salvage the ship failed, so finally the ship was abandoned and became a wreck. Some fixtures, such as the captain’s saloon, were transported to Åland and are now displayed in the Åland Maritime Museum. In addition to the treasured collections from the era of the tall ships, the museum has new exhibition rooms for motor vessels and shipbuilding, among others. The museum welcomes young visitors of all

The four-masted barque ship Pommern is one of Mariehamn’s foremost sights. Her regular mooring spot is below the Maritime Museum, but now a new quay is being built to protect the ship. In 2018 the Pommern will be moored north of the quay. In summer 2018 the Pommern is open for visitors on guided tours. Check the times on the museum’s website.

DISCOVER MARIEHAMN OF YESTERDAY AND TODAY Visit the Mariehamnsmuseet city museum and discover Mariehamn a century ago. Afterwards you can go walking along the streets and see how the town has changed. Diligent senior citizens have built a miniature model of Mariehamn as it looked like in 1929–1930. They have researched in old drawings and photographs and they have built miniature houses in scale 1:100, in which 1cm corresponds to 1 metre in reality. The houses have been painted in their original colours. Numerous details such as fences, plants, animals, ships and cars contribute to an authentic atmosphere that fascinates children too. Today Mariehamnsmuseet displays over 600 miniature buildings. This makes it easy for you to explore the town history and development. Start with a visit to the museum and then walk along the streets

and see what the city looks like today. Which houses are left? Which have been rebuilt or torn down?

STREETS WITH WOODEN VILLAS

Many old wooden houses have been preserved on Mariegatan and Södragatan streets. Several villas were designed by architect Hilda Hongell who was the first female master builder in Finland. Many of the houses were built around year 1900 when Mariehamn flourished as a spa resort. Guests who came here to relax and cure themselves with fresh sea air, rented summer chambers in the villas.

SWEDISH CASTLE AND RUSSIAN FORTRESS RUINS Two of Åland’s foremost historical sights, Kastelholm Castle and the ruins of the Russian fortress in Bomarsund, are situated near each other in Sund. Kastelholm Castle, the only castle in Åland, was once located on a small island on a scenic strait. When the Swedish King Gustav Vasa visited Åland in the mid-1500s, he stayed at Kastelholm Castle. Next to the castle you can visit the openair museum Jan Karlsgården with a 19thcentury farmyard setting, and Vita Björn prison museum.

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE FORTRESS

The construction of the Bomarsund maritime fortress was started in the 1830s. A small garrison town with dwellings, shops, post office and school grew next to the fortress. In 1854 Bomarsund was conquered by British and French troops and the fortress

was blown up. Today you can see ruins of the main fort and remains of hill towers with splendid sea views. In the area you can also see plinths of the civilian houses. On the neighbouring island of Prästö there are cemeteries that were used during the Russian era. There are several signposted hiking trails in the area. FORTRESS AREA open year round. CRAFTS ALL OVER ÅLAND Åland’s arts and crafts association celebrates its 90th anniversary year with a new summer exhibition, “Nitti”. The artisan house SALT opens its balcony for the exhibition “On our veranda”. Organised crafts training in Åland was started in 1928 with an ambulatory handicrafts school focusing on wood and metal crafts. The aim was to pass on old craft skills that were starting to get shadowed by expanding industrial manufacturing. This year the local crafts association celebrates its 90th anniversary. The exhibition, called ”Nitti” and meaning ninety in Åland dialect, depicts the development in words, images and objects, such as smaller pieces of furniture and brass works. The exhibition is displayed on the second floor of the Post and Customs House in Eckerö. In addition to the historical timelines, the exhibition showcases new arts and crafts works by active

members of the association who work and create design in different materials and techniques. The new works take up three exhibition rooms. One of the annex buildings houses a shop selling artisan food and crafts, and a charming café.

IN MARIEHAMN

EASY TO EAT WELL IN ÅLAND Enjoy a dinner as if you were a shipowner! Visit restaurant Nautical in Mariehamn or other fine-dining restaurants. It’s easy to eat well in Åland. Åland’s best known celebrity chef, Michael Björklund, has contributed to numerous TV food shows and won chef contests both in Finland and Sweden. He has shown the way – if he can do it, anyone can! There are many first class restaurants and their chefs have one thing in common – they all highlight the local raw produce. Restaurant Nautical in the Western harbour is one of Mariehamn’s most prestigious restaurants and offers a splendid sea view. Many renowned shipowners have been regular customers. The restaurant also has an outdoor terrace with casual elegance and delicious dishes with well-balanced details. 70 – www.aland.com

LOCAL DELICACIES Parsnip chips. Local air-dried ham. Salami made of Åland beef. Cream cheese of organic milk. Artisan food traditions are alive in Åland! The countryside in Åland is alive and thriving. Many local farmers and breeders do more than just sell their raw produce – they also turn them into artisan food products. For example, the organic dairy farm Mattas Gårdsmejeri produces different kinds of cheeses, e.g. hard, cream and white cheese, and also yoghurt. All cheeses are handmade and that’s why the taste and cheese selection can vary. Bolstaholm’s beef cattle farm in Geta produces tasty salamis, and the sheep farm Marskogens Lamm in Finström has an award-winning selection of charcuterie. 72 – www.aland.com

Apple farming is big in Åland and the farmers have developed and refined their farming methods through the years. Nowadays many of the farmers have lowoxygen storage halls to keep the apples fresh for a longer time. Two of the biggest apple farms, Grannas and Karl-Ers, also produce freshly-pressed apple juice. There are many more artisan food producers, so check the local deli selections in the grocery stores and openair markets. Many food artisans have won prizes in national tastings in Finland and Sweden.

BLACK BREAD OF KÖKAR Black bread is considered Åland’s national bread. One of the black bread bakeries is situated on Kökar. Take an archipelago ferry to Kökar, buy the bread and see more of the archipelago municipality. The main ingredients of black bread are malt, syrup and rye flour. Pickled salmon, boiled egg and a slice of black bread make a delicious open sandwich for lunch! Black bread is baked in many bakeries in Åland. One of them, Skärgårdsbröd Kökar, bakes black bread according to a recipe developed through decades. The bakery also produces dry bread. In the summer, the bakery café is open and serves breakfasts, hamburgers, salads, vegetarian dishes, sandwiches and cakes, in addition to black bread of course. Peders Aplagård is also a Kökar-based company. They produce non-alcoholic beverages with berry and fruit flavours,

such as apple cider. The farm shop is housed in the attic of an old barn. Kökar has also several ancient sites of interest, them including remains of ancient bronze aged dwelling site as well as a Franciscan monastery dating back to the 1400s.

TOYS MADE IN ÅLAND Trucks, excavators and pulks. Tractors, spades and coffee sets. Plasto of Åland has manufactured safe and durable plastic toys since the 1950s. The machines in the factory hall spit out toys on a regular pace. Some are made in a single piece, for example spades, cups and saucers. Others like trucks consist of many parts that are mounted together. Plasto is one of Åland’s industrial and export enterprises. Plasto’s main retailers are in Finland and Sweden, but also in some other countries.

Every child in Åland has played with Plasto’s toys. The toys are both durable and safe and are found in every day care centre and in many homes. Nowadays, the company also produces toys made of sugar cane plastic instead of plastic made of oil. Thus the plastic is fossil-free. The toys can be found in all toy shops in Åland. The company’s absolute success is the big truck sold in over a million copies.

SEE THE GOLDSMITHS CREATE See how the goldsmiths create Guldviva design jewellery. They hammer, forge, taper and twist every piece of jewellery in the new showroom of Guldviva Jewellery shop. Goldsmith Maria Karlström has made her dream come true. She has enlarged her jewellery shop with a workshop in the Maritime Quarter of Mariehamn. Now you watch the goldsmiths work behind a large panorama window. – Every piece of jewellery in our shop is handmade, and now you can see them being created in the workshop, says Maria.

CUSTOM DESIGN

Today the Guldviva jewellery collection includes some 300 unique pieces of jewellery. Maria Karlström designs all of them with inspiration from nature and everyday environs. Blue anemones, birch leaves and fish as well as traditional boats and sailors’ knots become jewellery in 102 – www.aland.com

her hands. Creativity also derives from other things, such as the 19th-century champagne bottles that local divers salvaged from a ship wreck from the bottom of the sea. That was when Maria created her collection Celebrate with jewellery that reminds you of sparkling champagne bubbles.

MUSEUM CORNER

The new shop and showroom also offer a small museum corner with a unique exhibition – a tribute to her past predecessors on jewellery art in Mariehamn. Goldsmith Hugo Simons’ beautiful cupboard used to stand in his smithy at Torggatan street in a house that has been torn down. In the cupboard you can find his tools and pieces of jewellery from the early 1900s. Here you can learn, among other things, how a golden drop-shaped charm used to be cast in two parts which were soldered together while the inside was filled with resin.

ACCOMODATION

FEEL YOURSELF AT HOME IN ÅLAND! Accommodation options are many in Åland – choose the one that suits you best! If you want to stay close to entertainment and shopping in Mariehamn there are several centrally located hotels to choose from. Guesthouses and cottages outside the town centre are also attractive alternatives, for example Gröna Udden’s campsite by the seashore. Some prefer to stay in holiday cottage villages in the countryside. These are usually located by the sea and offer a range of services, such as rental of rowboats, kayaks and bicycles. There are holiday villages both on the main island of Åland and in the archipelago municipalities. For the latter you can travel by one of the inter-island ferries, some of which are operated around the clock and others according to the timetable. 110 – www.aland.com

If you’re looking for a total solitude and silence without a neighbor in sight, rent a cottage with private location. There are even cottages on small islands! For those who want to camp there are several campsites around the Åland Islands, some of them also offer simple overnight cabins. In the countryside and in the archipelago you can also stay at a couple of guesthouses and bed & breakfasts.
