Autonomous islands with own flag Åland is a Swedish-speaking, autonomous province in Finland. In other words, a small state within a state. Åland’s Autonomy Building, Självstyrelsegården, houses the Åland Parliament with 30 representatives, and the offices for the Åland Government authorities. The Parliament House can be visited on guided tours that give you information about the history of Åland’s autonomy.

OWN LEGISLATION

Åland has the right to pass laws in a number of spheres, including education, traffic, healthcare and business. Åland has its own flag and its own postal services and stamps. Cowslip is the national flower. The statue of Julius Sundblom stands on the town square of Mariehamn.

Sundblom was the first speaker of the first Åland Parliament. Åland’s Autonomy Day is celebrated on 9 June with a festive programme by the statue. Åland has a population of almost 30,000 people, and around 11,000 of them live in Åland’s only town, Mariehamn. Today many people choose to move to Åland from countries in Europe and beyond.

ÅLAND PARLIAMENT AND SELF- GOVERNMENT BUILDING, guided tours on autonomy’s history and present day. Friday 14 June–30 Aug at 10–11.30. (Not on 21 June.) CLASSICAL MUSIC

Åland offers many annual music events of which Åland Organ Festival is the oldest one. It has been arranged since 1975. Organists and other musicians from different countries give the festival an international touch. For example this year there will be music artists from Japan, Italy and Belgium. There is also an Åland concert evening with local artists, them including soprano Therese Karlsson. Many of the concerts are arranged in Åland’s beautiful medieval churches.

Life is a Schlager! Katrina Chamber Music Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with the theme “Life is a Schlager”. “Schlager” might not be the first word one would associate with chamber music, yet schlager music has existed in all eras – from street ritornellos and popular opera melodies to the Eurovision Song Contest of today. The artists this year include Lill Lindfors, among others, and the festival’s “house band” Tempera Quartet is back.

Sea Days and Viking Fair Åland Sea Days and Viking Fair are two of Summer-Åland’s most popular events for all in the family. The Sea Days offer programme day and night. The major focus is on maritime activities, including kayak excursions, sailing ship cruises, bark boat carving and demonstrations of traditional boat engines. Market stalls tempt with street food and beverages of all kinds. For example, have a taste of ”Ledholmare”, a fresh and tasty herring burger! The events are arranged in the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn’s eastern harbour. There is a museum for traditional boat building, a boat engine museum and a harbour for traditional sailing ships. Stroll around and take a closer look! Two larger vessels are being built in the shipyard, and there are also crafts shops with a wide range of arts and crafts for sale.

PARTY WITH THE VIKINGS!

The Viking Fair in Saltvik is one of the largest Viking events in Europe. New Viking house replicas have been built in the village, and a Viking ship Borge Swyn is moored by the sea bay. Here you can meet Viking societies from east and west. Stroll around and meet Viking crafters, musicians and warriors in their period costumes and listen to their songs and music. Don’t forget to taste some Vikinginspired food and beverages.

Crafts at Jan Karls How to spin wool, make ropes and churn butter? Learn some old crafts and household skills at Jan Karlsgården’s open-air museum in Kastelholm! Every Wednesday in July, artisans demonstrate how yesterday’s Ålanders used to manufacture everyday utensils and necessities. Here you can see, among other things, how to tat lace, make wood shingles, ropes and brushes and how to cook traditional Falu red paint in a large cauldron over an open fire. Stroll amidst the old red houses at the openair museum and breathe in the atmosphere!

FOR CHILDREN

Jan Karlsgården also offers activities for children. On working days in July the kids are welcome to try wool and wood crafts. On Thursdays in July children can bake sweet buns with skilled bakers using the wood-heated baking oven of the little bakery cottage.

In Jan Karlsgården’s open-air museum you can visit old farmstead buildings, them including cow and oxen sheds, a smoke sauna and several farm houses. There is an old boat house by the seashore. Take a closer look and breathe in the atmosphere of the past. Åland’s official midsummer pole is erected in the museum area. The decoration of the pole starts at 18 o’clock and everybody is welcome to join and give a hand! The pole is raised at 20 o’clock. Next door you can visit Kastelholm Castle and Vita Björn Prison Museum. A day in Eckerö can be started in Smart Park’s family park that suits for all visitors over 2 years of age and to everybody who is child at heart. Among the many attractions you will find Bomarsund adventure track with climbing nets, labyrinths and gangways. Bring a towel and a set of dry clothes as you’re bound to get wet!

For indoor activities, there are more games, bouncy castles and adventures waiting in Eckeröhallen sports hall that is turned into Leklandet playland in the summer. Leklandet suits for kids from 2-year-olds to adults. The youngest ones in the family have their very own playground.

BATHING BEACH

When in Eckerö, don’t miss the beach in Käringsund. The fine beach lies next to Käringsund Resort holiday village where you can rent water toys. Here you can also play minigolf, volleyboll and tennis. A popular beach Bamböle beach in Finström is one of Åland’s most popular bathing beaches. There are green lawns and smooth rocks by the seashore and the sea water in the sheltered inlet warms up early and offers safe surrondings for all swimmers. There is also a long jetty and a swim tower. Åland has two fine indoor swimming centres – Mariebad in Mariehamn and Ålands Idrottscenter in Godby. Both also offer shallow pools for the youngest ones in the family.

Disc golf in the park Looking for free outdoor activities? The park of Badhusparken in Mariehamn offers a frisbee golf track that is free and always open. Everybody is welcome to play disc golf in Badhusparken, thanks to the track built by the local Lions Club. However, you need to bring your own discs, or you can buy them in one of the sports shops in town. Badhusparken park lies beautifully on a slope above the western harbour. From the park you have a view of the tall ship Pommern and the marina of the yacht club Åländska segelsällskapet. The fairways are between the tall pine trees in the park, so you need to plan your casts to avoid hitting the trees. The round can be finished off at one of the restaurants next door. Restaurant

Käringsunds Fiskeläge

See wild animals at close range!

The Åland Hunting and Fishing museum is situated in a choice location by the sea at Eckerö Käringsund. The museum describes the Ålanders’ day-to-day life in former times – how hunters and fishermen provided for their families and how living in the archipelago was like. Come and meet Elvis, the wild boar, and his favourite spouse Pigcilla, and all their friends grunting and digging in the ground. See the llamas, deer, wild boars and ostriches on a guided Game Safari tour in Käringsund, Eckerö. You are safely seated in a comfortable carriage where you can enjoy watching the animals. We lure the animals to the carriage and there is often a possibility to clap a deer. In our Safari Shop you can buy e.g. coffee, ice cream, smoked meat, smoked venison sausage, ostriches items, cuddly toys and souvenirs. 12–15.6 17–30.6 21.6 1.7–4.8 5–17.8

The house for the lighthouse keepers’ and their families was built the same year as the mighty lighthouse. On Lågskär there used to live up to 30 persons. The living conditions were harsh on the barren island, especially in wintertime when the islanders lived isolated from Åland’s main island for several months. The white and beautiful lighthouse of Sälskär island in the northern part of the Åland archipelago lies closer to the main island than Lågskär. Sälskär can be visited on a guided evening tour. Kayaking to an old fishing camp Go kayaking to the small island of Sältingskär that was used as a fishing camp for a long time ago. Here the archipelago fishermen used to come to fish Baltic herring during some intensive weeks in early autumn. Sältingskär is a barren island with smooth cliffs and a sheltered harbour at the outer edge of the sea. You can choose from two different kayaking routes. Take a Föglö line ferry from Svinö on the main island to Degerby, Föglö. There are many daily ferry departures. Start paddling southwards from Degerby or drive to Bråttö village from where the kayaking voyage is shorter. Experienced kayakers can kayak from Herröskatan on the main island over Föglö fjärden. Here it is important to stay away from the big ferries that round the tip of Herrö. Föglö fishermen who fished herring at Sältingskär used to stay in small and simple

cottages on the island. There are still some cottages left for visitors for an overnight stay.

GUIDED TOURS

Åland is perfect for kayakers. There are shelt ered bays and open waters to choose from. Paddelboden Paddle Shack offers guided kayaking tours for beginners and those who want to brush up their skills. You can choose from evening or day tours starting from Mariehamn. Mariehamn – turfer’s paradise Mariehamn is the right destination for turfers and those wanting to test turfing for the first time. The town is a paradise for all turfers! There are plenty of zones, around 180 altogether in Mariehamn. A turfer needs a smartphone and a turf app that can be downloaded free. Then you just head for the zones. Once you find a free zone you can capture it and get turnover points. The captured zone is blocked for you for about 20 minutes. You can play against yourself or hunt for points within a certain time. You can also play against other players in Åland, Finland or all over the world. There are different types of gaming styles. Turf suits to players of all ages. You play it on your mobile phone and adjust

the game according to your interest. Some turfers walk, run or cycle between the zones. – Whichever way you choose, turf is an excellent way to get out and move in the nature, says a local turf enthusiast Niclas Möller.

GEOCACHING

Geocaching is another free outdoor activity. In Åland there are plenty of so-called caches to be found. Register yourself as a geocacher on www.geocaching.com and find more information on how to get started.

Cycling to Lemböte chapel Mariehamn is a good starting point for a cycling trip. Rent a bike and go pedalling to Lemböte chapel which is an interesting destination within a perfect distance from Mariehamn and offers history and nature at the same time. Take the main road number 3 towards Lemland and follow the signs to Lemböte. Today the chapel lies off the beaten track, but in the middle ages it had a central location and a harbour by an important sailing route. The fairway started from Blekinge in southern Sweden and continued along the coast northwards and then east across the Åland Sea. Seafarers went ashore next to the chapel before they continued their long journey eastwards. The little chapel was built around the late 1200’s, but it started to decay in the 1500’s when the sailing route lost its importance

as vessels got bigger and safer for crossings over the open Baltic Sea. The chapel has now been restored and today you can spend some peaceful moments here in the midst of the nature.

BEAUTIFUL CANAL

On the way to Lemböte you will cross the Lemström canal, built in 1882. On both sides of the canal there are beautiful parks where you can sit down, take a break and watch the boats passing through the canal. Sailing boats and bigger motor boats must wait for the swing bridge to be opened.

Hiking in Herröskatan Herröskatan nature reserve has a diverse nature in a small area. Here you can see the open see and smooth barren rocks as well as blooming seaside meadows. Herröskatan is a government owned nature reserve and is open for everybody year round. There are tables and benches in the area so bring a picnic basket and enjoy the view. The area is located on the southernmost tip of Åland’s main island. Here you can experience the powerful sea winds and storms. Enjoy the nature’s theatrical play in stormy weather! If you arrive here in the afternoon you can also watch the big ferries passing by and rounding the Herrö peninsula on their route between Mariehamn and Turku. Just a stone’s throw from the seashore the barren nature changes its character into verdant and quaint wooded meadows. On the meadows where the sheep go grazing you can find different types of wild

orchids and an abundance of bloody geraniums.

WARTIME REMAINS

The tip of Herröskatan peninsula has had a strategic position and has been fortified several times. For example, during the World War I the Russian marine troops were building a coastal battery in the area. All military fortifications were demolished after the war, but there are some wartime defence structures left.

GUIDE BOOK IN SWEDISH “Åland – Vandra, cykla, paddla” by Olle Persson contains a lot of information about hiking routes and trails all over Åland. MAPS and information leaflets on hiking trails are available from Visit Åland’s tourist information office at Storagatan 8, Mariehamn, and on the webpage www.visitaland.com/hiking

Adventure up amidst the trees Åland’s first Flow Park is located on Vårdö. Here you test your courage on adventure trails, swing paths and other adventurous surfaces up amidst the trees. Olof Salmi runs Sandösunds Campsite on Vårdö. He wanted to offer his guests an adventurous outdoor activity and chose Flow Park. This outdoor concept tis found in several parts of Finland, and it offers an ecological adventure park built on living trees. The trail contains different elements and tasks on swaying paths and is available in three levels - the most challenging one goes up at the height of about 15 metres. No climbing experience is required. Everyone who is at least 7 years old and over 120 cm tall is welcome. You’ll be instructed how to

use the equipment and how to act on the trails, and you choose the level that feels most suitable.

HELMET AND LIFELINES

Safety is important. You are connected with lifelines to a safety cable wire that prevents you from falling. Helmet should also be used. Comfortable outdoor clothing without loosely hanging parts is recommended as well as solid shoes with a smooth sole. - We can have up 30 visitors at a time and you spend two hours on the course, says Olof Salmi. The park has been built during the spring and is opened this summer. Check the opening hours on www.sandosund.com www.aland.com – 49

Onboard the tall ship S/v Pommern has returned to its regular mooring spot and welcomes visitors with new museum experiences! The tall ship Pommern has been moved back to its quay below the the Åland Maritime Museum. The new quay and dock are now completed after one year of construction. The entrance to the ship is via the Maritime Museum from where there is a gangway to the main deck. The visitors are welcomed with a new visitor experience. You can borrow an audio guide and listen to stories told by crew members. Hear how the cook is lost in thought making plans for stretching the provisions for a long sea voayage. The captain is fretting and thinking of the best possible passage between Europe and 58 – www.aland.com

Australia. In other words, it is just another day at work onboard the Pommern. You can also try your hand at seamen’s crafts such as sewing sails. In the large hold at the bottom of the ship you can experience the power of nature over humankind – from the doldrums to fresh breeze and all the way to full storm. The Pommern, built in 1903, was owned by the Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson, known as the king of the sailing ships. Later on his family donated the Pommern to the town of Mariehamn.

IN THE MUSEUM

The Åland Maritime Museum houses a fine display of the sailing ship era. The museum also presents sections for engine-driven ships and ship building traditions. The child-friendly museum has handson-activities and a kids’ play room called ”Ruby and the Sea”.

The oldest medieval churches in Åland are situated in Finström, Eckerö, Hammarland, Jomala, Saltvik, Sund and Lemland. The church of Finström is the best preserved medieval building in Finland. For example, there are no windows on the northern wall as the northern winds were considered evil. Many other medieval buildings have been provided with northern windows in later renovations. The windows let in more daylight, but at the same time a large part of the medieval character has disappeared. The oldest part of the the Finström church is probably from the late 13th century. In the 1400s, the church was rebuilt and got its present appearance.

Lars Sonck, a well-known Finnish architect who has designed several buildings in Mariehamn, is buried in the cemetery. His father was a vicar in Finström. In addition to Sunday services and events such as weddings and baptising ceremonies, the Ålandic churches are often used for concerts. Bomarsund in a new app What did the main fortress of Bomarsund look like before it was blown up? What kind of houses were there in the village of Skarpans, next door to the fortress? Download the new Coastal Past app and you will see! The fortress area of Bomarsund is one of Åland’s most unique attractions. In 1830, Russia began to build a coastal fortress in the area. It was planned to be big and powerful, but also aesthetically pleasing. Next to the main fortress, urban-like communities grew up with houses, shops, a post office and a school. In 1854 Bomarsund was blown up by British and French troops. Today you can visit the ruins of both the main fortress and the defence towers up on the hills with magnificent views. In addition, there are numerous house grounds, including those of civilian buildings.

On the neighbouring island of Prästö there are cemeteries with grave stones. In the area you can follow hiking trails with information boards. The Coastal Past app is an excellent companion during the visit. In addition to loads of information, you can see images of the grand project – before everything went up in smoke.

Four islands meet in Åland This summer 73 artisans exhibit their new works in Eckerö Post and Customs House. They all work in different materials and techniques, but they have a common denominator. Everyone comes from an island. The crafts association Ålands Slöjd & Konsthantverk has created a popular tradition– an annual craft exhibition in the magnificent Post and Customs House in Eckerö. This summer’s exhibition is called ”Öar – Island Craft”. Is it possible to see if a piece of craft is created on an island? Are there similarities, or differences, between the islands? How do the local traditions inspire today’s crafters? These are the questions that both artisans and viewers can contemplate when they see the exhibition. The local crafts association has invited artisans from three other islands to Åland

– from Bornholm in Denmark, Gotland in Sweden and Hiiumaa in Estonia. 73 artisans participate, 21 of them are from Åland. The exhibition is displayed in the upper floor of the Post and Customs House which is an attraction in itself. The house was built during the Russian period and was completed in 1828. The view over the Åland Sea is stunning.

Gourmet trip around Åland Let the local restaurants guideline your journey around Åland! There are many restaurants to visit in Mariehamn and in the countryside alike. Restaurant Nautical in the Western harbour is one of Mariehamn’s most prestigious restaurants with a splendid sea view. The restaurant offers casual elegance and delicious dishes of top class. In Mariehamn you can also eat well at Kvarter5, Indigo and Park, among others. Kvarter5 focuses on Nordic kitchen. You’re also welcome to sit down for some tapas and for a glass of selected wines. Indigo is housed in an old stone warehouse and offers two sections of different styles – an elegant fine dining restaurant downstairs and a cosy bistro bar upstairs. There is also a spacious outdoor patio. Restaurant Park’s all time favourite among guests since 1976 is the spiced 70 – www.aland.com

CATCH OF THE DAY

Pub Stallhagen in Grelsby serves delicious rustic meals of mainly Ålandic raw produce. The restaurant has built up a network of suppliers that deliver the best catch and harvest of the day. Therefore, the menu changes from day to day. The restaurateur Johanna Dahlgrén has been awarded with the prize of Finland’s Swedish home economy association for her skills of using local ingredients in an innovative way. She gladly encourages her guests to eat more fish and her butter-fried pike patties are a success! The craft beer is brewed in the brewery next door. Many cafés also offer sandwiches, salads and other light dishes. Many cafés in Mariehamn are open year round and they take pride in serving freshly baked buns, cakes and cookies. LOCAL DAIRY FACTORY

Local ingredients are important to many café owners. Åland keeps up with its local dairy factory that delivers excellent milk, cream and butter with a taste of home- 72 – www.aland.com

churned butter. The milk has an exceptional archipelago taste, thanks to the variety of grass and herbs growing in the calciferous soil where the cows graze. Åland also produces organic grain stone milled flour that can be found in all local grocery stores.

FRUITS AND BERRIES

Fruits and berries, such as raspberries and bilberries are farmed in Åland. The berries are used in pies, pastries and cakes. In the forests there grow wild bilberries and lingonberries. Sea buckthorn berries are also used in bakery products and desserts. Sea buck thorn berries grow along the coastline and are also farmed. In the local grocery stores and delis you can buy natural sea-buckthorn berry juice, marmalades and curds.

Coffee break in a historical cottage Take a coffee break in Mariehamn’s oldest house. Övernässtugan cottage is open on Wednesdays during the peak season. In the early 1800s the Övernäs village was situated in the place where the town of Marie hamn was founded in 1861. It was a small fishing village with a couple of farmyards and 33 inhabitants. One of cottages of the village was in the place where the autonomy building Självstyrelsegården stands today. Another cottage, called Övernässtugan was located next to the town’s large green area. Today it is the only house that remains of the old village. Members of Mariehamn’s household association run a summer café in the cottage. Sometimes there are music performances in the garden.

The house has been rebuilt several times. The cottage was originally a sailor’s cottage from the first half of the 1700s. The interior is not the original, but you still get a good picture of how a sailor’s home looked like over a century ago. The house next door has been moved to the site and houses a small merchant museum.

PROMENADE IN THE GREENERY

After a visit to the café you can take a walk through the wooded meadows of Tullarn Äng and enjoy the rich flora and bird life. Here you can also see a cannon that was used at the Bomarsund fortress. The cannon is made in the early 1800s in Russia. Below Gröna Udden’s campsite there is a fine bathing beach.

Dinner in the sea! The boat takes you to a secret island in the sea. There the ”red carpet” is rolled out and a butler welcomes you to the island. Dinner in the Sea offers a gourmet and archipelago experience out of the ordinary. A table with a delicacy galore of Åland artisanal food is served on a rocky islet in the middle of the Åland Sea. The focus is on charcuterie and cheeses. The island trip is made by a fast boat and the guests get to experience the genu-ine feeling of staying on a desert island. In stormy weather the guests are taken to Hertronklubb island next to the inlet of Mariehamn where the dinner is served in a more sheltered setting.

On Hertronklubb you can also learn about Åland’s fascinating but also tragic maritime past. Here, the sailing ship Plus went aground and sank in a stormy winter night in December 1933. Twelve men drowned, four survived. On Hertronklubb you can also see a memorial stone for the victims.

IN A BOAT HUT

If you’re looking for a completely weatherproof option next to the sea you can choose an exclusive dinner in a boat hut where they serve a gourmet fish platter with flavors from Västerro’s artisanal restaurant.

food

Taste of prize winning cheeses Kastelholm, Bomarsund and Pommern. Åland cheeses carry Åland names. Local cheeses are sold in every grocery store. Åland has long traditions in cheese making. Already in the 16th century, cheese was exported from Åland to Stockholm. Today, cheese is produced in a larger scale by Ålandsmejeriet dairy factory. Ålandsmejeriet makes its cheeses exclusively from milk from Åland dairy farms. The range is wide. A classic cheese in the assortment is called Ålands Special and has been selected Finland’s best cheese in its class. Several other cheeses of the dairy’s assortment have also done well in taste competitions. The cheeses are sold in every grocery store in Åland. Mattas’ organic farm dairy’s cheese production in Sund is considerably smaller.

The owners Jennifer Sundman and Lars-Johan Mattsson make cheese of organic milk of the farm’s three dairy cows. They take care of the whole process, from the cultivation of grass right up to the final packaging of the cheeses.

VARYING ASSORTMENT

The assortment includes diced salad cheese, cream cheese and halloumi. The range varies. Sometimes they make soft white cheese or other varieties. This is the charm with genuine artisan food; the production is limited and exclusive! Mattas’ organic farm dairy usually participates in the Harvest Festival in September and the farm shop is open whenever Jennifer and Lars-Johan are at home!

Åland beverages Quench your thirst with Åland beverages! Freshly pressed apple juice is a favourite, and there are also apple ciders and beers of various kinds. Åland is Finland’s apple orchard. In northern Åland the apple trees grow in long rows. The blooming apple trees are lovely in the spring and just as stunning in the autumn when they carry colourful apples. Larger apple farms such as Grannas and Karl-Ers press sun-ripened apples into juice that is sold in local food stores. Gran-nas also produces its own mix of apple and sea buckthorn juice. Amalias Lemonade Factory makes lemon ades flavoured with cranberries, lingon-

berries and black currants. Even alcoholic beverages are available in the selection. Peders Aplagård fruit farm on Kökar sells its sparkling beverages with a taste of gooseberries and juniper berries, among others. Åland has two beer breweries – Stallhagen and Open Water Brewery. The latter was started by a couple of beer loving friends who are happy to experiment with new beers. The microbrewery focuses on a yearround selection, but also on seasonal beers. The latest addition in their selection is an alcoholic apple cider.

Bake your own Åland pancake Prolong the taste of Åland. Bake Åland pancake when back at home! Traditional Åland pancake can be found in most cafés and outdoor markets. Not to be missed when in Åland! Some bake the pancake of semolina porridge while others prefer rice porridge. Some serve the pancake with prune jam and others with raspberry jam. Taste different versions of the pancake and bake your favourite one when back at home. If you use rice porridge, prepare the porridge according to instructions of the package and then follow our recipe.

Cardemom is the key 1 litre milk 1.5 dl farina 1 dl flour 3 eggs 1 dl sugar 0.5 tsp salt 1 tsp cardemom 50 g butter or margarine Boil the farina. Let cool for a while. Lightly whisk the eggs and sugar and mix with the semolina/farina. Mix in the flour, salt and, most importantly, the cardemom, which gives the pancake its unique flavour. Spread the batter out (approx. 2 cm thick) onto a greased baking pan. Place pats of butter on top of the batter. Bake at 200 degrees until the pancake is a golden brown. The pancake can be frozen if there is any left over.

Toys made in Åland Trucks, excavators and pulks. Tractors, spades and coffee sets. Plasto of Åland has manufactured safe and durable plastic toys since the 1950s. The machines in the factory hall spit out toys on a regular pace. Some are made in a single piece, for example spades, cups and saucers. Others like trucks consist of many parts that are mounted together. Plasto is one of Åland’s industrial and export enterprises. Plasto’s main retailers

are in Finland and Sweden, but also in some other countries. Every child in Åland has played with Plasto’s toys. The toys are both durable and safe and are found in every day care centre and in many homes. Nowadays, the company also produces toys made of sugar cane plastic instead of plastic made of oil. Thus the plastic is fossil-free. The toys can be found in all toy shops in Åland. The company’s absolute success is the big truck sold in over a million copies.

Playgrounds Mariehamn has many playgrounds with swings, slides and climbing frames, e.g. at the town square, next to Alandica Culture & Congress, and on Lilla Holmen. There is also a playground next to the Swedish Consulate, near ÅSS marina.

Local ceramics are useful Ceramists Siv and Simon Linney have created ceramics of their own design since 1985. Many of their products have become popular classics for collectors. Every bowl, mug and ceramic item from Lugnet pottery has been designed and hand-thrown on the throwing wheel. After throwing the items are burned, glazed and decorated by hand, before the final burning. Siv and Simon Linney have their pottery workshop on their home yard Lugnet in Hammarland, where they also run a summer shop. In Mariehamn their ceramics are sold in the arts and crafts shop Salt in the Maritime Quarter. The couple creates ceramics of clay and stoneware. They launch both new products and produce their established bestsellers. The bowls of different sizes are painted 102 – www.aland.com

with decorative blue and white stripes and remind of the charm of the Nordic summer.

OWN DESIGN

Salt’s crafts shop in Mariehamn is beautifully situated on the quayside and offers Åland’s largest selection of handmade utensils and crafts. The products are quite the opposite to massproduced items! Here you can find, in addition to ceramics, hand-woven carpets, plaids and shawls as well as knitted garments. The wide selection also includes handmade jewellery, wooden items, forged candlesticks and hand-printed fabrics in colourful fun patterns that are sewn into tablecloths, pillowcases and tea towels, among other things. Some days, freshly baked bread is also sold in the shop.

Feel at home in Åland! Accommodation options are many in Åland – where do you want to stay? If you want to stay close to entertainment and shopping in Mariehamn there are several centrally located hotels to choose from. Guesthouses and cottages outside the town centre are also attractive alternatives, for example Gröna Udden’s campsite by the seashore. Some prefer to stay in holiday cottage villages in the countryside. These are usually located by the sea and offer a range of services, such as rental of rowboats, kayaks and bicycles. There are holiday villages both on the main island of Åland and in the archipelago municipalities. For the latter you can travel by one of the interisland ferries, some of which are operated

around the clock and others according to the timetable. If you’re looking for a total solitude and silence without a neighbor in sight, rent a cottage with private location. There are even cottages on small islands! For those who want to camp there are several campsites around the Åland Islands, some of them also offer simple overnight cabins. In the countryside and in the archipelago you can also stay at a couple of guesthouses and bed & breakfasts.

BOOKINGS

Travel operators like Viking Line and Eckerölinjen offer a wide selection of accommodation alternatives in Åland. They help you to find the one that meets your specific requirements. www.aland.com – 111
