Welcome to our island paradise! Åland is islands, islands and more islands. According to the last count, there are more than 6,700 of them. Some big, some small. Inhabited and deserted. You can’t get more archipelago than this. When you’re in Åland, you’re always close to the sea and the magnificent archipelago nature. Even when you’re right in the middle of Mariehamn, Åland’s cosy little capital, you can still see water and smell the briny wash of the sea. Ålanders have been shaped by the sea. They have learned how to take advantage of what the sea offers them – to build ships and sail to foreign lands, with fish and firewood in the hold, returning with new ideas and approaches. They understand that the sea brings people together. Åland has excellent connections with the big cities to the east and west. Åland is safe and welcoming. Whether visiting for a day or two or moving in, you’ll always feel welcome. And, I guarantee that you’ll soon be adopting a whole new philosophy: island time. It rarely takes more than 10 minutes to get from one place to another. You can do more with less stress. Can it get any better than this? Welcome to my Åland! This magazine will help you find your new favourite places and experiences. Terese Flöjt Chairperson of Visit Åland

Self-government Åland became an autonomous province of Finland after a decision made by the League of Nations in 1921. The first plenary session of the Parliament of Åland was held on 9 June 1922. A legislative body consisting of 30 members, the Parliament of Åland passes legislation on the economy, education, transportation and health care. The Government of Åland, Parliament and regional administration offices are housed in the Åland Government Building, which is the white building on the eastern shore of Mariehamn.

Many of these stamps have won awards in international competitions.Åland has its own license plates for motor vehicles. These all begin with the identifier ÅL.

Åland’s currency is t he euro and both Åland and both Åland and Finland are in the Eastern European time zone. When it is 12 noon in Sweden, it is 1:00pm in Åland.

Åland has no military or active military bases. Ålanders are exempt from military conscription in the finnish defence forces.

Population There were 200 new Ålanders in 2018! The population will soon reach the 30,000 mark. Nearly 12,000 people live in Mariehamn, Åland’s largest city. The official language in Åland is Swedish.

Åland - a country in the sea Åland, or the Islands of Peace, is a country within a country that lies almost in the middle of the Baltic Sea. Many visitors to Åland are struck by its very special atmosphere. Safe, hospitable and always so close to the sea.

It is also just a bit exotic. Åland is a very unique blend of Finland and Sweden, with some Russian influences. ÅLAND IS INDEPENDENCE in many ways. Åland isn’t just a self-governed island country with the right to pass its own laws. It is also its gutsy, indefatigable people. The Åland islanders are used to doing things themselves and relying on their own abilities. But, they never shy away from the world at large. They have sailed the seven seas and returned with new ideas and approaches to doing things. SELF-GOVERNMENT provides Ålanders with an instrument to shape society in accordance with its own needs and

requirements. Today, Åland is a robust community with a low unemployment rate. The population curve is on the rise - new Ålanders are moving in every year. THE BUSINESS SECTOR is active, with enterprises both small and large. Some of these are high-tech niche operators with customers all over the world. It’s always good to merge the small with the large! ACTIVE ÅLAND. Here in Åland, there are clubs and organisations to suit just about any interest, with active members to keep things happening all year round.

DAVID BATRA – standup show Book your ticket on our website!

Escape the workaday world Take a dip in the sea – right in the heart of the city. Take a break – on the seashore. Mariehamn is a city with the sea both to the east and west. A city that is all at once easy-going and active. A city with a proud maritime history.

Lilla Holmen.

Founded during the Russian era Mariehamn was founded in 1861. At that time, Åland and Finland were part of the enormous Russian Empire and the Czar was Alexander II. Mariehamn was named after his wife, Maria. Although residential lots were initially expansive, more and more buildings and houses were constructed. Wood villas built at the turn of the century still stand on Södragatan and Mariegatan.

Mariehamn can be described in many ways. Some mention the ’City of a Thousand Lindens’, referring to the esplanade that runs from east to west lined by four rows of lindens, making it a spectacular sight and a city landmark. Others think of it as a maritime city. Mariehamn has been home to scores of shipowners, whose vessels have plied the seven seas. Even today, several shipping lines keep their headquarters in Mariehamn. Some recall the city’s time as a popular bathing destination at the turn of the last century. In those days, big city citizens made their way to Åland to take in the invigorating sea air and recharge their bodies and minds with rejuvenating spa treatments. MARIEHAMN – A LITTLE BIG CITY. This is where the governingbodies of Åland reside. There are banks, and insurance companies, shops, cafés and restaurants. But, nature is always close by. Almost right in the middle of Mariehamn is Lilla Holmen, with its swimming beach and the verdant meadow of Tullarns äng. Lovely walking paths follow Mariehamn’s shorelines.

Building designed by Hilda Hongell at the turn of the last century.

IT’S JUST AS CLOSE TO CITY ENTERTAINMENT as it is to the sea in Mariehamn. Pubs, bars and nightclubs are located within easy walking distance of each other. Along the pedestrian avenue of Torggatan are speciality shops, offering everything from Åland handicrafts, articles from Finnish and Swedish designers, and cosy cafés. MARIEHAMN IS BEST EXPLORED on foot or even bicycle. Start your walking tour of the city on Badhusberget hill. From here, you’ll have a wonderful view over the entire city, and you can watch the large shipping vessels arriving and departing in the harbour channel.

Föglö.

From island to island Vårdö, Bärö, Järsö, Bergö, Dånö, Snäckö. This list could go on and on. Åland is positively awash with islands. Try to visit them all! How many can you reach on a single visit? A good tip for beginners – start with Föglö!

A good way to get started is to look at a map. Åland itself is a larger island – in everyday parlance, it is called the main island or mainland Åland. It is surrounded by thousands upon thousands of smaller islands and skerries. Quite simply, the unparalleled nature of an archipelago. Many of the larger islands are inhabited all year round. These can be reached in various ways. The shortest route over the water is usually across a bridge or causeway. In other cases, there are ferries that also carry cars. Some ferries are oncall 24 hours a day, while others operate on set schedules.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME ’collecting’ islands in Åland? Then you should definitely start with Föglö. The ferry runs several times a day from Svinö on the main island and takes a half an hour. It’s quite an experience to sit out on the deck and watch the beautiful archipelago from your high ferry perch. The ferry docks at the village of Degerby, the most city-like village in all of Åland and perfect for exploring on foot or by bike. The village was a stop on an important shipping lane and a population centre long before Mariehamn was founded. It boasted a customs house, parliament and

pilots. The buildings still stand, tucked in along the winding village lanes, including the stately Art Nouveau Customs House and the red storehouses from the early 1800s, when Åland, like the rest of Finland, was part of the enormous Russian Empire. This is where duty was imposed on the goods being shipped between Sweden and Russia.

Åland - where world powers once clashed Graham Robins of Scotland and Geir Henriksen of Norway met in Åland. While here, they explored Bomarsund and were taken by the exciting history of the area. What a massive military undertaking. What a social life. What celebrations and what a fate for the people there. Don’t miss the graves on Prästö to see the different denominations represented there, explain Graham Robins and Geir Henriksen.

Graham Robins and Geir Henriksen work at the Cultural History Museum of Åland. Graham

10

is the musuem curator and Geir serves as a museum guide. ”Bomarsund is definitely a world-class site – without a doubt one of the most exciting and unique attractions in Åland,” say the two. THE AREA IS FILLED WITH memories of the time when Bomarsund was Åland’s economic and political centre. In 1830, Russia began construction of coastal fortifications in the area. Their plans were grand in scale and people from all over Russia came here – military personnel,

In August of 1854, British vessels took positions in the inlet and opened fire on the fortress at Bomarsund. The Notvikstornet fortifications (pictured) were destroyed in the attack.

stonecutters, merchants, journeymen, carpenters and convicts. Civilian society, with everything from shops to schools and pharmacies, grew around the fortifications. Between 3,000 and 3,500 people lived in the area during this time – a significant number in those days. There were no cities in Åland yet. High-ranking officers and others of similar status lived an upper class existence, replete with champagne and caviar. ”A cosmopolitan infusion with the courtliness of St. Petersburg came to tiny little Åland!” IN 1854, IT ALL CAME TO AN END French and British forces attacked the fortifications, which were then demolished with explosives. All civilian buildings, many done in the Empire

ÅL A N D T R AV E L M A GAZ INE 2019

style, were burned to the ground. Their ruins reportedly smouldered long after the attack. Geir even goes as far to say that Bomarsund is the Pompeii of Åland. One moment grand and the centre of attention, the next everything is gone. The events surrounding Bomarsund even had an impact on modern-day Åland, such as the demilitarisation of the island state and the founding of Mariehamn. THE RUINS OF THE MAIN FORTRESS and fortified tower remain along with the foundations of several civilian buildings. On the neighbouring island of Prästö, there are graves for people of various denominations who were buried during this time. Walking paths wind through the naturally beautiful site.

RED GRANITE

and beautiful sand

14

Åland’s nature has many faces. From bare, weather-beaten rock and verdant forest meadows to deep, enchanted woods. The red, rapakivi granite is typical of Åland. Åland’s shoreline is lined with red rock ground smooth by the retreating ice sheet of the last Ice Age. There is nothing finer than to lay back on the sun-warmed rock on a summer day. Higher up on the rock is a perfect habitat for lichen, which gives the rock a greyish appearance. And then, nature provides an unexpected treat – lovely sand beaches tucked in between the rocky outcroppings. One can always be grateful for such natural riches and diversity.

ACTIVE DAYS

Land or water?

”From a high vantage point looking out over the bay, you can just make out the shipping lanes that have linked Sweden and Finland since the Middle Ages.” Olle Persson on hiking on Geta in northern Åland.

Nature is never far away, always tempting you to get out and do something both invigorating and relaxing. Nature experiences in Åland can be roughly divided into two categories: things to do on land and things to do on the water. Are you a water person? In other words, someone who loves to feel the rolling of the sea under their feet and fill their lungs with an inexhaustible supply of fresh, briny sea air. Well, in that case, you won’t have

Å LA N D T R AV E L M A G A Z I NE 2019

any trouble finding things to do in Åland. Hire a kayak and paddle to your heart’s content. Which do you prefer? Open water beyond the archipelago with an unobstructed view of the horizon? An

16

archipelago dotted with countless islands and islets, which you can sail past or even land on? Or both? You can really have it all. If you want, you can even paddle to one of the larger islands and then take an archipelago ferry home. The sea will tempt you to try a wide range of activities, such as surfing, kitesurfing and jet-skiing. Jetskis can be hired in Åland for a tour around the archipelago, with or without a guide. www.visitaland.com

Take a jet-ski out to the pilot station on Kobba Klintar!

Long-distance ice skaters will see some unusual ice formations.

Yoga helps to achieve balance.

WHEN THE WINTER ICE has settled in for the season, a whole host of new experiences awaits. Long-distance ice skating has become something of a folk sport in Åland. More and more people long to glide across the smooth, mirror surface of the iceand, if conditions permit, even skate out to the edge of the archipelago, where sea and sky blend seamlessly into one another. Åland also has several lakes,

ÅL A N D T R AV E L M A GAZ INE 2019

which freeze solid early in the season and are ideal for proper day skates. OR DO YOU PREFER dry land? Åland is just about the ideal place to explore on the saddle of a bike. Pedal your way through Åland’s cultural landscapes, through villages with their many red farm buildings and beautiful windmills, stopping along the way to see the sights, take a break at

17

local cafés and rest on beautiful beaches. You can choose from several alternatives – stay in one place and make day trips depending on the weather, wind and mood, or make a real tour of it, staying in a different place each night. Tour operators, such as Viking Line and Eckerö Linjen offer cycling packages, which include a bicycle, helmet, route suggestions, booked accommodations and delicious meals. www.visitaland.com

Catch a ferry to the Åland Islands

Finnlines’ freight-passenger ships offer an easy option for travelling to the Åland Islands from Sweden and Finland. On this route the buffet meals are always included in the trip. Get your car ready and book your trip at finnlines.com

Climbers love Getabergen.

HIKING in Åland is a lot like biking – either you choose a longer route and overnight at each stop or you stay in one place and make day trips from there. There are several different trails to choose from. One is the Lemlandsleden trail, which is 25 kilometres in length. The trails are clearly marked and pass through varied terrain:

over hills, through villages and along the shorelines. You can purchase maps at Visit Åland. It is also possible to hike shorter sections of trails. WOULD YOU PREFER to climb a hill? On Getabergen, there are rock formations perfect for bouldering, and in Mariehamn’s

Western Harbour, there are sheer rock faces with bolted routes. Would you like to see Åland from horseback and ride out in the countryside with kindred spirits? Equestrian schools are happy to receive guest riders and will take you out for rides.

Such a sporting island! Åland has invested heavily in sports and has numerous sport halls located throughout the island province. It’s almost difficult to find a sport that can’t be played indoors. Åland is an ideal location for training camps, for both teams and individuals, and it hosts a number of competitions. Åland is a rather sporty province. Both public and private actors are active investors in sports, ensuring its continuous development. We can start with Åland’s multipurpose halls. There are two in Mariehamn and two in rural areas where visitors can play floor hockey, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and futsal. Allhallen in Eckerö is big enough to fit a full-size football pitch! Then, there are several speciality halls for tennis, badminton, gymnastics, ice hockey and martial arts such as judo.

There are also halls devoted to curling and bowling. Vikingahallen in Jomala boasts its own squash court. INTEREST IN EQUESTRIAN SPORTS is positively exploding. Today, there are several riding schools and course-based training facilities for equestrian sports. Most of these have their own indoor riding hall. Two gyms and a Crossfit cage are also available to incidental visitors who want a workout during their Åland visit. The gyms offer a wide variety of group training

course length is just over 3,200 metres and from the longest, over 5,700 metres. It is much more fun to play when everyone – regardless of their skill level – has a chance to make the hole at their handicap. The course is located close to the ferry harbour in Eckerö and there are several lodging alternatives nearby. ÅLAND GOLF CLUB, which has hosted thousands of satisfied guest players since it opened in 1983, is making a major investment in its facilities and currently rebuilding Slottsbanan (Castle Course), the

oldest of the club’s two 18-hole courses. When the course reopens for the 2020 season, players will be able to enjoy completely new holes set right along the shoreline. Until then, guests can play the 18 varying holes of the King’s Course and the 6-hole Prinsess short course. This course is perfect for everyone – beginners not yet able to handle longer holes, skilled players who want to improve their short game, players only looking for a quick round and anyone wanting to extend their game after playing 18 holes. GOLF SEASON is long in Åland, from early spring to late autumn. The fact that the entire golf trip starts with a truly enjoyable ferry ride, with plenty of good food, drink and tax-free shopping, only enhances the overall experience.

The fish are biting! Fishing in Åland is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The fishing methods can vary widely, as do the fish. Sometimes it’s high season for trout, at others its all about salmon, pike, perch or pike-perch. Come whenever it suits you best! Is it time to try your hand at brown trout fishing? An exciting challenge and unique nature experience, particularly if you choose to match wits with this noble fish in late autumn, when the chill has set in and the days are shorter. Åland has beautiful lowland shorelines facing the open sea that are tailor made for fly fishing, whether from the shore or on a float. After spending several hours outside, there’s nothing quite like coming back to a nice, warm home, where you can take a sauna and eat a hearty meal. ÅLAND IS a fishing paradise all year round. One of its specialities is the rapacious pike, which can be found just about anywhere there are reeds. Pike can be fished with both spinners and lures. And, if you get tired of pike, there are also plenty of perch and pike-perch to be had! In the winter, when the ice has set, anglers can head out with their jigs and a thermos DISTANCES in Åland are short and the sea is always close by. This means that you can do all sorts of different fishing – even in a single day. Brown trout in the morning and then perch in a sheltered cove in the afternoon. Or vice versa. EVERYTHING YOU NEED for a fishing holiday can be purchased in the same package: the trip to Åland, accommodations, a boat with motor and fishing permit. A fishing guide, who knows the water and where the fishing is good on any given day, can also be hired.

Fishing licenses online! The waters surrounding Åland are divided into several large and small fishing license areas. All visiting anglers must have a valid fishing license. Go to www.fiskekarta.ax and click on the area you want to fish. If you would like additional information on fishing regulations visit Cottage villages and shops in Åland also sell fishing licenses over the counter.

New experiences on the Pommern The captain is fretting. Which route should he take for the return passage from Australia to Europe? The cook is lost in thought. How can he stretch the provisions for three months? The deckhand is wondering. Will his homesickness be too much for him? Meet them aboard the tall ship Pommern, which will be offering entirely new experiences starting this year! Mariehamn and Åland have invested in the future by building a specially equipped quay with a built-in dock for the tall ship Pommern, one of the city’s most popular sights. The vessel is moored floating, naturally, inside a built-in dock. It is like an enormous bathtub made of steel and concrete set atop heavy piles driven into the seabed. IN MAY THIS YEAR, Pommern will be reopened to visitors along with many new features besides the quay. Now visitors board the ship on a footbridge from the Åland Maritime Museum that leads

directly to the topmost deck or ’weather deck’, as it is known in the colourful seaman’s parlance. The footbridge makes the Pommern more accessible to visitors with disabilities. ON BOARD THE POMMERN, you’ll be able to eavesdrop on the crewmembers while they chat about their experiences, feelings and thoughts during the long voyages from Europe to Australia and back again. The stories you will hear are based on letters, journals and travelogues the crewmembers have themselves written.

THE TWEEN DECK has become a real hands-on deck. Here, you can try your hand at such tasks as sewing sails, and in the large hold at the bottom of the ship you can experience the power of nature over humankind – from the doldrums to fresh breeze and all the way to full storm. THE POMMERN was built in 1903 in Glasgow,Scotland and purchased in 1923 by Åländ shipowner, Gustaf Erikson. The vessel, one of the world’s only large sailing ships preserved in its original condition, was donated to the City of Mariehamn by Erikson’s descendants.

Magical lighthouses Lighthouse islands have always held their own charm and magic. On one hand, you have freedom and an endless view out over the sea. On the other, you are isolated and exposed. Åland has several lighthouses open to visitors - it is always fascinating to visit a lighthouse island and try to imagine what life was like for lighthouse keepers and their families, especially during the winter months. Märket lighthouse was built on a bare skerry, which sits right on the border between Finland and Sweden. It was commissioned in 1885. Seafarers had long wanted a lighthouse installed here. The shallows in the area were, at the time, a death trap for ships passing by Åland on their way to the north or south. Many a seaman met his end here and the area is packed with shipwrecks. The winds can blow hard at Märket – according to some, the hardest in all of Finland – and waves can wash over the entire skerry. To walk on the rock under such conditions was extremely dangerous to the lighthouse keepers. When the weather became stormy, the keepers would stay on the gangway, which ran between the lighthouse buildings high above the ground. Lighthouse keepers were no longer needed when the lighthouse was automated in 1976.

Sälskär

THE LÅGSKÄR ISLANDS dot the surface of the sea roughly halfway between the coast of Sweden and Åland. The current lighthouse tower was completed in 1920. At most, some 20-30 people lived on Lågskär, which is an extremely exposed spot. For long periods of time during the winter, these people would be completely cut off from the rest of the world. THE LIGHTHOUSE ON SÄLSKÄR is white, slender and elegant, and its island is somewhat more hospitable than Märket. Razorbills nest on a neighbouring island. PILOT STATION Kobba Klintar is located at the entry channel to Mariehamn. Easy to reach, easy to fall in love with. Archipelago nature on a grand scale, with a healthy dose of maritime history. The white beacon is often used as a venue for cultural experiences. Lågskär L I G H T H O U S E S A N D P I L O T S TAT I O N S

The pride of Åland runs aground in front of the whole world The little hamlet of Salcombe in Devon, England was experiencing its best tourist season ever in 1936. And what might this have to do with Åland, you might ask? The answer is: a great deal. In April 1936, the windjammer Herzogin Cecilie ran aground off the coast of England, attracting a great deal of attention. It is a dramatic race against the clock. Can the cargo of grain be saved before it rots? Can the ship be refloated? Newspapers are filled with reports and articles on the incident. Newsreels are made and people crowd into Salcombe to see the pitiful sight of the grand vessel lying aground close to the coastline. THE SHIP’S CAPTAIN on board is Sven Eriksson, who was born on Pellas farmstead in Åland and raised in a hardworking Åland farmer-shipowner family. Also on board the ship is his wife, Pamela, an adventurous woman of British descent and, accordingly, from a whole different world. She talks to journalists with an air or experience and often appears in newsreels. HERZOGIN CECILIE is now owned by Ålander Gustaf Erikson, who is known as the world ’king of windjammers’. In 1932, at the height of his windjammer empire, he owns 18 large square-riggers that sail all over the world. The Herzogin Cecilie is the most beautiful of them all. However, the ship cannot be saved after running aground. It is doomed to become a shipwreck. THE CAPTAIN had an elegantly appointed cabin aboard the ship. Today, the entire cabin can be seen at the Åland Maritime Museum. The cabin was removed and shipped to Mariehamn after the grand ’Duchess’ was left to her fate on the coast of England. Step in and feel the atmosphere this is where Captain Sven Eriksson had his private dining salon, where he, a high-ranking sea captain, entertained members of the glitterati while in port. CAPTAIN ERIKSSON’S CHILDHOOD HOME Pellas is also still standing. He lived here together with his wife, Pamela, after the shipwreck in England. Their two children were also born here. After the Second World War, the family emigrated to South Africa, where they then purchased a farm. Visit Pellas! Here, you’ll be able to see how a wealthy family in Åland lived at the turn of the last century. There is a small exhibition on the Herzogin Cecilie in the attic. ’Highborn Pamela Bourne would barely have given Åland sea captain Sven Eriksson even a sidelong glance had they met in a pub. He would make a much better impression against the backdrop of fifty-metre high masts and swelling sails, the very embodiment of power and control in any context,’ writes author Ulla-Lena Lundberg in her book ’Hertiginnan och kaptenskan’ (’The Duchess and the Captain’). Here, we see him at the foot of the main mast, with the mizzen sails in the background.

The countryside is alive in Åland

THEY HAVE adjusted to the conditions given to them and focus more on speciality crops than grains. Åland is currently Finland’s largest apple orchard - three out of every four apples is grown here. A beautiful sight in the spring is the apple trees in full blossom, not to mention them in the fall, heavy with ripe fruit. Åland has a good climate for fruit farming, with many hours of sunshine and a mild, extended autumn. This is thanks to the sea surrounding Åland that has warmed over the summer.

Åland’s countryside is very much alive. Ranks of apple trees stand branch to branch. Onion fields can be found everywhere. Cows and sheep grazing in pastures is a common sight. Many farmers and breeders also go that extra distance and process their produce in their own abbattoirs, dairies and bakeries. Head out into the Åland countryside and see it with your own eyes. It’s positively teeming with life. Of course, Åland’s nature does play a part in this in some ways. Sometimes a little cove cuts its way in between fields, sometimes a hill juts straight up out of the landscape. It can be quite a patchwork and farmers seldom have broad, flat plains to work with.

ÅL A N D T R AV E L M A GAZ INE 2019

AND THAT’S not all. Various types of onions and potatoes are key crops. A large percentage of the potatoes become, among other things, chips in Åland’s largest factory. Members of the Odlarringen farming co-operative are devoted to organic farming and offer a variety of produce.

The castle had its glory days under Gustav Vasa when Åland and Finland belonged to Sweden. Nowadays it is restored to a “living ruin” and is open to visitors May through September.

IF YOU WANT TO SEE ANIMALS without making a major expedition of it, then you’ve come to the right place. Both dairy and beef cattle can often bee seen out grazing, as can sheep with their lambs. MANY FARMERS AND BREEDERS produce their goods with a craftsman-like approach. Some make delicious cheeses from milk. Others ensure that the meats they produce are made into flavourful sausages, that sea buckthorn is boiled down into perfect curds and marmalades, and that apples are transformed into refreshing ciders. Some are so successful at doing these things that they win awards in food competitions outside of Åland.

ÅLANDSMEJERIET produces cheese, yoghurt, ice cream and other products from Åland milk. It is said to have a special archipelago flavour, thanks in large part to the herbs that dairy cows graze on in the lime-rich soil. The cheeses have local names such as Bomarsund, Kastelholm and Pommern, with many receiving top honours in Finnish cheese championships in their respective classes. WHY NOT TRY AN ÅLAND style beer? Can it get any more ’dinner in the archipelago’ than this? A beautifully set table almost in the middle of the sea, with delicious dishes prepared by Åland’s finest chefs on the plate. Dinner in the Sea, a concept created by Rundbergs Stugor, is an extraordinary dining and archipelago experience.

ÅLAND’S BAKERIES naturally bake the island province’s ’national breads’ – one a flat bread perfect for everything from a breakfast sandwich to fish soup and the other a black rye bread. Here’s a tip for a little snack that will fill the bill almost anytime: Fry the bread in Åland butter and then eat with gravlax, Åland sour cream and an egg or two!

IT’S EASY to eat well in Åland. Chefs are very skilled at getting the most out of such excellent raw ingredients and challenge one another to ever greater culinary heights. Åland’s biggest celebrity chef, Michael Björklund, who has won numerous cooking competitions and appeared on countless television programmes in Finland and Sweden, is the trendsetter. If he can do it, so can others!

SHOPS often include locally-produced goods on their shelves. These are also sold at local markets. Two highlights of the year are Åland in Greenery in May and the Harvest Festival in September. During these events, farms open their doors to visitors and sell both their own produce and those grown by others.

Taste the Åland Pancake! Any café worth its salt serves the Åland pancake and, on the market square, they melt in your mouth like butter in the hot summer sun. One could almost say that everyone who comes to Åland will eat at least one Åland pancake, which suits just about every taste. But, it’s best to start with the real point of contention – should you use rice semolina or farina when making an Åland pancake? Tina Dahlblom-Landell, home economics teacher and proprietor of the Saltvik Bed & Breakfast, bakes sheet after sheet of pancakes for hungry guests during the summer months and she has chosen her side: I use rice semolina – it makes the pancake fluffier. She prefers to serve it with ’sviskonkräm’ – a jam made by boiling prunes and seasoned with cinnamon – and a dollop of ’snömos’, which is ’whipped cream’ in the Ålandic dialect of Swedish. But, she also keeps strawberry jam on hand just in case someone prefers that.

pancake, which is a simple mixture of milk, eggs and flour. But, she was soon acquainted with Åland’s ’national dish’ and fell in love. ”A delicacy that can be enjoyed in so many ways - as a snack, with afternoon coffee and for dessert. When we set up a buffet, I always have pancake along with the other desserts, but in fork-sized pieces,” explains Tina. It is very filling. Its base is farina or rice semolina, which is mixed with sugar, flour and eggs. ”Maybe the pancake came about when people in the old days had porridge left over and they wanted to make something out of it,” wonders Tina.

TINA’S ROOTS are in Turunmaa, which is in Southwest Finland. She came to Åland in 1989 to work as a teacher for budding chefs. At that time, she was only familiar with the standard issue Finnish

SO, TRAVEL AROUND Åland and test the various pancakes at different places. Then, try making one at home with your preferred ’secret’ ingredient – rice semolina or farina!

Cardemom is the key 1 litre milk 1 dl rice semolina or 1.5 dl farina 1 dl flour 3 eggs 1 dl sugar 0.5 tsp salt 1 tsp cardemom 50 g butter or margarine Boil the rice semolina or farina. Let cool for a while. Lightly whisk the eggs and sugar and mix with the semolina/farina. Mix in the flour, salt and, most importantly, the cardemom, which gives the pancake its unique flavour. Spread the batter out (approx. 2 cm thick) onto a greased baking pan. Place pats of butter on top of the batter. Bake at 200 degrees until the pancake is a golden brown. Jonas Wilén

Creative trio with different forms of expression

Creativity thrives in studios all over Åland. During Konstrundan in the autumn, many local artists open their studios to visitors.

Åland inspires artists. The trio of Jonas Wilén, Nayab Ikram and Johan Karlsson exemplify the broad range of different styles among working artists. Large-scale oil paintings, sarcastic political cartoons for local newspapers, street photography and crafty hedgehogs, dogs and other animals made of scrap metal are just some of their oeuvre.

JONAS WILEN, a currently active artist, can be seen in a variety of contexts. He paints everything from large oil canvases to tiny little stamps. He is a proponent of public art, a powerful mosaic of athletes displayed at Mariehamns Idrottsgård,

ÅCB provides tips The Aland Convention Bureau (ÅCB) is the place to go for everyone wanting to host a meeting or conference in Åland. Free of charge and without bias. ÅCB provides tips and recommendations on package trips, accommodations and conference rooms in Åland and supplemental activities, which are custom-tailored for each group. g Islands

’ÅLAND – The Meeting Islands’ brochure can be read online.

Alandica Culture & Congress (in the background) has both small conference rooms and an auditorium that seats 600.

Klobben is part of Silverskär Islands, where guests can hold meetings surrounded by nature.

Calm and restful venues for effective meetings Åland is a peaceful place to host meetings. There is no hustle or bustle. No long shuttles here and there. No traffic jams. But, there is plenty to do when taking a break. Åland offers facilities for meetings large and small, both in Mariehamn and out in the archipelago.

HOLDING A MEETING or conference in Åland is more than the sum of its parts – it ends up being an experience unto itself. You start out with passage on a cruise ship or a flight, followed by a couple productive work days in a beautiful archipelago setting. If you prefer, you can start and/ or end your days on board a ship. The passenger ships have fully-equipped conference rooms in a variety of sizes. TIME CAN BE spent effectively thanks to the short distances, and the meeting or conference can be spiced up with actionpacked or relaxing activities, depending on what the group prefers. Maybe a round of golf or spot of fishing. Perhaps hiking, biking, curling, a casino course or visit to a museum would be the ticket.

Or maybe a boat excursion to a beautiful island. Sometimes, an hour in the sauna with the obligatory dip in the sea is just what you need before a hearty meal. If you would like to learn a few cooking tricks, you can book a couple hours in the kitchen with Åland’s celebrity chef, Michael Björklund. MEETING AND CONFERENCE FACILITIES come in all shapes and sizes. You can stay in timber storehouses on a rugged island out in the archipelago and hold your meeting in rustic Saltarboden. You can also choose a modern venue in the Mariehamn city centre or far out at the edge of the archipelago in north Åland. What would best suit your group?

What’s in the bag? Borrow a Family Bag at the Cultural History Museum of Åland and explore the museum together. A simple ragdoll will guide you to boxes with more expensive toys. A flitting plastic flea challenges you to find the mould in which a toy was made. Everything in the bag makes the museum visit even more fun for families with small children. The kids’ corners offers all sorts of activities, among them the chance to build a lighthouse - if you do it right, it will even start flashing! At the Åland Art Museum, you can watch a video film of children explaining what they thought of various paintings. Do you agree with them or do you have your own views on the subject?

A paradise for the whole family! It’s easy for families with kids to have fun in Åland. Here, you can easily go from the beach to a play park and then on to do some fun activity at a museum, all without any stress. All of Åland is a paradise for families. Distances are short – indeed, many places can be reached on foot. When travelling by car, no trip will take too long for the youngest members of the family. In some cases, it is even possible to take a ferry between islands, making a simple trip a little adventure in itself! NATURE is always open for a wander. There are several shorter hiking trails that are perfect for the whole family. Bring along your own food and enjoy a picnic in a forest clearing or at the seashore! PUBLIC BEACHES can be found all over Åland. No two are exactly alike here. The beach at Degersand in Eckerö has a real Danish feel to it, wit its broad strip of sand and open view of the sea. The beach at Bamböle in Finström offers piers, a diving platform and rocky outcrops. Located almost in the middle of Mariehamn, Lilla Holmen has a shallow sand beach and a kidfriendly, ship-themed climbing structure. IF YOU WANT TO SEE SOME ANIMALS, there are red and fallow deer, wild boar, ostriches and llama on a game safari at Käringsund in Eckerö. On Lilla Holmen there is a bird house where you’ll find a collection of exotic birds.

ÅL A N D T R AV E L M A GAZ INE 2019

MUSEUMS offer a wide range of fun activities for children. At the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum, visitors can dig for pearls in the sand and cast their own tin figurines. At the Åland Maritime Museum, ship’s rat Ruby is on board and the children’s room ’Ruby and the Sea’ shows what life is like under the sea, with shipwrecks, marine creatures and mermaid rats. The smallest members of the family can go on a treasure hunt, while bigger kids can test the museum’s handson activities, such as the climbing mast. The Cultural History Museum of Åland and Åland Art Museum both offer special activities for children. At Kastelholm Castle, kids can dress up as princesses and knights and search for pirate treasure chests. At the Jan Karlsgården open air museum, right next to Kastelholm Castle, children can bake bread, among other fun activities. FAMILY FUN PARK Smart Park in Eckerö offers endless fun for kids 2 years and up, including mazes, climbing nets, a big sand paradise, pedal car tracks, a miniature farm and a pond with boats. At Leklandet, which is located just a couple kilometres from Smart park, visitors can jump, flip and flop around in various bouncy castles and fortresses.

A bank for people who choose to follow their own path. An independent bank, with Åland common sense and a global view Ever since the Bank of Åland (Ålandsbanken) was founded in 1919, our focus has been very clear. We have built our operations in harmony with Åland Island entrepreneurs, who over time havenot only expanded their businesses but have also benefited the Åland community. Our operations span a broad horizon, from private individuals who need a bank they can rely on to well-established corporations that are internationally successful and growing small businesses that were recently only good ideas. Today we are among Åland’s biggest exporters. We have been delivering financial services to the Finnish mainland since 1982 and to Sweden since 2009. We are now more than 650 people, working in nine different locations towards the same objectives. Our development has been favourable, but we have never forgotten where we come from – a small community where a handshake is a handshake and it is important to be able to look each other in the eyes, tomorrow just like today.

We attract attention because of our focus on good customer relationships, common sense and sophisticated financial services. We are continuously recruiting people with a wide range of skills. You will find our job advertisements (in Swedish) at www.alandsbanken.ax/jobb Welcome to the Bank of Åland!

A town for quality of life Åland’s capital town Mariehamn is a metropolis in miniature. More and more people choose to live in the maritime town of Mariehamn that offers vibrant summer life as much as contrasting serenity and peace in winter. You can also do the same. You might have visited Mariehamn in summertime. Perhaps you have seen the sailing ship Pommern, enjoyed an Åland pancake in a cosy café, sunbathed on Lilla Holmen close to the town centre, or visited some of the town’s 70 shops and 20 restaurants. However, Mariehamn is so much more! Also in wintertime you can find all the necessary services for a town-dweller or for a visitor within a short walk in the town centre. The wide range of active sports clubs and culture associations makes it easy for you to participate in experiences and focus on your favourite hobbies. Be all you can be Mariehamn is an active and vibrant town where many cultures, religions and languages meet. Åland is a creative island community with deep roots in enterprising. As an entrepreneur you have a chance to slow down your pace, and the big cities can easily be visited by air or sea. In fact, this demilitarised part of Finland allow you to be all you can be, except a Locomotive Driver or Army Sergeant. Idyllic small town with a healthy pace In Mariehamn you have the nature as your closest neighbor, no matter where you live. There are also good chances to have a home with a sea view. EVERYONE CAN FLOURISH IN A VIABLE SOCIETY ON THE ISLANDS OF PEACE.

We Ålanders have made a decision. Both planet and humanity shall survive us. Even after us there must be clean water, fish in the sea, birds and bumle bees. There shall be a society where people take care of each other. In 2014 our Parliament decided that Åland shall be a fully sustainable society by 2051. We live in Europe´s oldest autonomous region. We are also the smallest one. We live on our beautiful islands in the middle of the sea and we are used to taking care of ourselves and trusting each other. That is a commitment. We will prove that it is possible to change the course for an entire society and to flourish for the benefit of climate, environment and the future. Are you curious about how we will do this? Check out www.barkraft.ax. Or come and meet us. Every revolution begins somewhere.

More info on guest harbours www.visitaland.com

Beautiful fairways — safe harbours Visitors arriving in their own boat will find charming guest harbours of all kinds located all over Åland. One guest harbour is just adjacent to the broad, burly expanse of Norrhavet Sound. Another is tucked away in a quiet little cove at the foot of a medieval castle and yet another is just a hop, skip and a jump from the pedestrian street in the middle of Mariehamn. ”The world’s best kept secret!” This is roughly what a British sailing enthusiast and journalist exclaimed when visiting the Åland archipelago. Simply put, he found it to be a paradise for boaters. Magnificent nature, countless uninhabited islands and endless route possibilities. Those who want to enjoy the wide open expanses of water head for western and northern Åland, while those who prefer island hopping find their own paradise to the east of the main island.

Fairways are rarely crowded and guest harbours can be found in just about every corner of Åland.

you’ll find a medieval castle, an open air museum and an Åland Golf Club course right across the way.

MARIEHAMN BOASTS two yacht clubs – Mariehamns Seglarförening (MSF) on the east side, and Ålands Seglarförening (ÅSS) on the west. No matter which one you choose, most of what the city has to offer is within walking distance. The Kastelholm guest harbour is situated in a small cove right in the middle of Åland’s cultural landscape. Here

HAVSVIDDEN GUEST HARBOUR is located in northern Åland. Havsvidden offers stunning seascapes, four-star hotel service and unparalleled swimming, all in one place. East of the main island, there are large and small guest harbours in most locales. After mooring, visitors can rent a bike and explore the area.

Here’s how to get to Åland! Åland has frequent connections with Sweden, Finland and Estonia – all year round. Modern passenger ships serve ports in Sweden, Finland and Estonia. These ships offer a wide array of restaurants, entertainment and tax-free shopping, not to mention affordable fares. Flights from Sweden depart out of Arlanda Airport in Stockholm from Finland out of Helsinki and Turku. Even archipelago ferries serve on routes between mainland Finland and the Åland islands. One good way to visit Åland is to start out on the socalled ’Northern Route’, which runs from Vuosnainen in Turunmaa to Brändö, and then return via the ’Southern Route’, which runs from Kökar to Galtby. This will allow you to see a broader range of the Åland archipelago. Naturally, you can make this run in reverse order, if you prefer! Visitors arriving on their own boat will have access to several guest harbours, which can be found in almost every part of Åland.
