Åland – a small state in a state Åland is a Swedish-speaking, autonomous province in Finland. In other words, a small state within a state. Åland’s Autonomy Building, Självstyrelsegården, houses the Åland Parliament with 30 representatives, and the offices for the Åland Government authorities. The Parliament House can be visited on a guided tour.

OWN LEGISLATION

The autonomous Åland has the right to pass laws in a number of spheres, including education, healthcare and business. Åland has its own flag and its own postal services and stamps. The statue of Julius Sundblom stands on the town square of Mariehamn. Sundblom was the first speaker of the Åland Parlia-

ment. Åland’s Autonomy Day is celebrated on 9 June with a festive program by the statue. From 9 June 2021 until 9 June 2022 Åland’s centennial jubilee year will be celebrated with a versatile programme. Åland has a population of almost 30,000 people, and around 11,000 of them live in Åland’s only town, Mariehamn. Today many people choose to move to Åland from countries in Europe and beyond. Active days at Jan Karlsgården Do you have children who like crafts? The charming open-air museum of Jan Karlsgården offers crafts and activities for kids from Monday to Friday in July. Hot airy buns baked in a wood heated oven taste heavenly delicious! On Thursdays in July children can bake sweet buns with skilled bakers in the bakery cottage. It is free for all kids to participate. Other working days in July the youngest of the family can try different kinds of crafts. OLD FARMSTEAD Jan Karlsgården is an open-air museum with old farmstead buildings. The area offers relaxing surroundings to stroll around. Don’t forget to walk down to the seaside and see the beautiful boat house! Take a closer look and breathe in the atmosphere of the past. There’s also more to see in Kastelholm

area. Next door you can visit the Kastelholm Castle on guided tours. The castle was built and rebuilt during the centuries. The oldest part of the castle is the southern side with a tower. The prison museum of Vita Björn is located next to Jan Karlsgården. The prison was built in 1784 and it was used for almost 200 years. Information about the Kastelholm area can be found at visitkastelholm.ax.

Small island for beach life in the The small island of Lilla Holmen has a sandy beach with a bathing jetty and cute rabbits living in their little houses. What’s there to do for a family with children on a sunny day in Mariehamn? The answer is easy; head for Lilla Holmen! The little island with a child-friendly beach is located within a stone’s throw from the town square. There is also a long jetty and a swim raft for those who want to jump and dive into the water. On shore there is a boat-shaped jungle gym with slides and swings. In summertime an ice cream kiosk is open. In a bird house you can see small exotic birds, and there are rabbits living in their tiny houses. Peafowl and turtles live on the island too! Mariehamn offers several beaches for variation. From Lilla Holmen you can walk 20 – www.aland.com

to the campsite of Gröna Udden where there is, among other things, a rope climbing frame. Nabben is the town’s most shallow childfriendly beach. It is located at the far end of the Eastern Harbour sea bay. There is also a smaller sandy beach next to the swimming centre Mariebad that also offers popular indoor adventure pools and a water slide.

FUN AT THE MUSEUMS

After the beach, the family is ready for some new adventures. Maybe a visit to a museum? Just like Lilla Holmen, also the Åland Art Museum and the Åland Museum of Cultural History, have activities for the youngest in the family. You can borrow the museum’s Family Bag filled with different items that lead you

A whole day in Eckerö This year the Smart Park theme park in Eckerö proudly presents a new attraction - Spark Laser Arena. In other words, families with children can easily spend a whole day in Eckerö. The Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum in Käringsund has, among other things, a fine collection of stuffed animals. Visit an educational wetland A new wetland has been constructed in Mariehamn. Follow the footpaths and learn more about the environmental project! The wetland restoration at Nabben was started last year and opened this spring. The general environmental purpose is to purify rainwater that flows out into the bay. In brief, the water stays in the wetland so that harmful substances such as phosphorus and nitrogen causing eutrophication of the sea either sink to the bottom or evaporate. When the wetland was planned, it was decided that it should also become a sanctuary for educational purposes and give a way of experiencing up-close encounters with wetland wildlife habitats. Thus, the area has been made accessible with footpaths and duckboards, and the visitors can learn about the life in and around the wet-

land on the information boards. The area is free for everybody to visit! There are several benches, so sit down and have a picnic break. Meadow flowers have been sown on the banks to attract butterflies and bumblebees. Pike fry will be planted out and nest boxes have been set up, all to favour the biodiversity.

WETLAND IN KASTELHOLM

Another wetland, Wallins Oasis, in Sund can be visited by car or bus. After about 20 km along the main road no. 2, pass Gesterby crossroads. The first information board stands next to the bus stop on the northern side of the road.

Åland offers new golf experiences this year! The Castle Course – Slottsbanan – Åland’s oldest golf course, is reopened after two seasons of renovation. The architect had two main goals with the redesign of the golf course; to improve the overall quality and to highlight the sea inlet next to the course. The Åland Golf Club also offers another 18-hole course, the King’s Course, and the Prinsessan course with six short holes. There is a pro shop, restaurant, dressing rooms and a driving range next to the club house in Kastelholm.

Kobba Klintar is located near Mariehamn and next to the vast open sea. In the summer there are boat transfers to the island. You can also go kayaking or rent a boat with an outboard motor at RoNo-Rent. The pilot station at Kobba Klintar was built in 1862. The pilots lived in the white pilot houses that are now open for visitors. In one of them you can also find a huge old-style foghorn that was blown to warn the ships when the fog was dense. Ramps have been built over the rocks to make the island more accessible for disabled visitors and families with strollers. In the summer there is a café on the island, but you can also bring your own picnic and enjoy it on the rocks. A new white beacon has been built for

Two routes from Hamnsundet Hamnsundet in northern Åland is an excellent base for two great kayaking tours. Hamnsundet is located less than 40 km from Mariehamn. You can choose kayaking in sheltered bays or out at open sea, or both! Yttre and Inre Verkviken are two narrow sea bays located near Hamnsundet. These two relatively long bays remind a little bit of Norwegian fjords with high rocky shores. There is a narrow channel connecting the two bays. You can always turn around and paddle back whenever you feel for it. If you choose to explore the two bays, the distance from Hamnsundet to Inre Verkviken and back will be about 12 km. Off Hamnsundet is the island of Boxö. A Russian coastal battery with cannons and a short railway was built during the World

War 1. The fortifications were destroyed after the war, but the ruins are left. You can go ashore by the old Russian jetty on the eastern side of the island and follow the paved road up to the former military battery. Boxö also has a large cave. If you haven’t paddled before, you can join one of the Paddle Shack’s guided kayaking tours starting from Mariehamn. See the current information on their website. There are also kayak rentals that deliver kayaks directly to your starting point, provided that there is a road all the way to the shore. PADDLE SHACK, Lervik, Mariehamn. The route of the day is always decided by the captain, according to weather and wind. There are also cruises to Kastelholm Castle through the scenic inner archipelago. You can join a return cruise with the Sunnan II, or you can take a bus one way from Mariehamn to Kastelholm and then take the ship back, or vice versa. Biking in Åland Åland is a pleasant place for biking, with lovely sceneries and many places of interest. In order for you to have a safe and nice bicycle trip, here is some advice on what you as a cyclist should know. Did you know that the bike is a vehicle and its rider a driver? Thus, the same rules apply for bicycles as for other vehicles. Right-hand traffic applies for cyclists on roads and on cycle paths too. As a driver of a vehicle you must observe right of way for vehicles approaching from the right. This doesn’t mean you can simply charge ahead into an intersecting roadway without looking to your right. You have to exercise the care that circumstances demand. This is all about interaction with other people and respect for agreements and rules of traffic. For your own safety you need to pay attention in every situtation even if you have the right of way.

Don´t forget your helmet, it´s a cheap life insurance!

Please remember only children under 12 years of age can ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. Cyclists can travel side by side only when this can be done without danger, and not at all on sidewalks. Bicycles with more than two wheels, as well as mopeds, can’t be driven side by side with another bicycle or moped at all. Sign well in advance when making a turn, look behind you and make sure you can turn without risk. A safe bicycle is equipped with a bell, working brakes, white reflector in front, red in back, orange spoke reflectors (2 pcs) and lamp back and front. Use a reflective vest while biking to make sure you’re visible at a distance. Last but not least, don’t forget your helmet, it’s a cheap life insurance!

Road signs to be aware of Walkway This is a walkway, biking not allowed. Walkway/cycle path This path is divided into one part for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The symbols on the sign tell you which part is meant for which category. Right of way Cyclists entering a road area from a cycle path must observe right of way. This means that you lower your speed in time or stop, and you can only continue when there is no traffic with right of way. NB! As a cyclist ou must always observe right of way, even when the crossing is marked in white for cyclists.

Stop sign All vehicles must stop at this sign, this also includes bicycles. Pedestrian crossing All vehicles, including bicycles, must let pedestrians cross. At a crossing with no marking in white for cyclists, you should walk your bicycle across. Bicycle path The sign indicates distance to a location along the bicycle path. Bicycle crossing When you are crossing a road via a bicycle crossing, you must give way to crossing traffic.

We wish you a safe and pleasant bike ride on Åland

Cycling trip to a church and café Mariehamn is the perfect base for a one-day cycling trip. Rent a bicycle and make a round trip to Jomala. Ro-No Rent in the Eastern harbour of Mariehamn offers a wide range of rental bikes. From there you can cycle along Österleden road to a roundabout and then follow the signs further north of Mariehamn. After a couple of kilometres you will pass Dalkarby lake just before arriving to the church of Jomala. The church was the first medieval stone church built in Åland. However, it is impossible to say how the church looked like on the 13th century as it has been rebuilt many times throughout the centuries. The church is open for visitors on weekdays in the summer. There is a large Iron Age burial ground next to the church.

Follow the main road number 2 north of the church and turn left towards Björsby. Follow the road and you will reach Brobacka B&B with a café by a beautiful and verdant creek. The Green Key certified café serves delicious homebaked cakes and light lunches.

THROUGH VILLAGES

After your coffee break at Brobacka you can take the same road back to Mariehamn or go cycling along the winding country roads through Jomala village and Österkalmare. There are many options, so take a look at the map! Along the roads there are many charming farmyards with red windmills and pastures. For more scenic settings take the road via Önningeby village and visit the unique art museum. Check the opening hours in advance! www.aland.com – 35

Hiking on Getabergen hill On Getabergen you can enjoy a splendid sea view over fascinating rock formations and knotty dwarf pines. Here on the northern part of Åland at the height of 98 metres above the sea level you can go hiking along a six-kilometre trail that starts and finishes by the hilltop restaurant. There is a car road all the way up to the hill. The trail is marked with white-painted arrows and piled stones. Along the path there are some steep rocky hillsides and impressive rock formations. It has been told that during the Great Northern War in the beginning of the 1700s the locals used to go hiding in one of the larger caves. The trail passes the seashore at Djupviken bay where you can take a break. On the hill there is also a 2-kilometre tell-a-tale-path for children. Getabergen is also considered one the

best bouldering sites in Finland for climbers without belayers.

MORE HIKING

The 3-kilometre medieval path starting at Geta church is another interesting hiking trail in Geta. The trail rounds a wooded hill and the information boards tell about the history of the surrounding countryside.

Life at sea and on shore in wellstocked What to choose first? An exhibition on the life on The Åland Islands during 7,500 years in the Cultural History Museum of Åland, or maritime history onboard the tall ship Pommern? In Mariehamn you can discover several amazing sights and experiences that suit the whole family. The sailing ship Pommern in the Western harbour is a symbol of Åland´s proud maritime history. The Pommern, built in 1903 and owned by the Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson, sailed with wheat on the Grain Trade from Australia to Europe. On board you can borrow an audio guide and listen to the crew’s stories and experiences during their long voyage. Walk around the tall ship and see how the crew lived in the small 48 – www.aland.com

cabins, while the captain had a bathtub! The children can follow the ship rat Ruby’s adventures on board. The entry to the Pommern is via the Åland Maritime Museum, also one of Åland’s prime sights. The museum boasts with an excellent exhibition on the sailing ship era, but also on engine-driven ships and ship building traditions. The child-friendly museum has many hands-on activities and a kids’ play room called ”Ruby and the Sea”.

SEAL HUNTING

How have people lived in Åland for 7,500 years? What was life like during the Stone Age when the first Ålanders travelled to the isolated islands for fishing and seal hunting? What was their life like in the Middle Ages, during the rise and fall of Swedish Empire, or when Finland was a Grand Duchy of Russia in 1809–1917?

An old photo shop in a museum Åland’s Camera Museum keeps growing. Recently the museum received a unique donation from the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter, namely a complete photography equipment from the cameras’ childhood days up until year 2000. Photographer Olle Strömberg has built up a unique museum that impresses camera enthusiasts worldwide. The oldest objects are from the 1870s and here you will find, among other things, an entire intact photo shop!

sights

Visit Borgboda hill fort During the early Iron Age (400-1000 AD) there was a fort hill on top of the Borgberget hill where the inhabitants could seek shelter during troubled times. You can go hiking up the hill along an excellent trail. During the Iron Age the water level was considerably higher than today. At that time, Borgberget was surrounded by water in three directions, and from the hill one had a good view over the important fairway that passed Kastelholm Castle and Sund’s church. The village was densely populated during the pre-Christian times. Six hill forts were built on Åland, and the largest one was Borgboda hill fort. Today you can hike up the hill along a trail marked with white-topped wooden poles. The only thing left of the fort itself is the foundations of the stone walls. Now several wooden warrior figures have been raised

on the hill to guard the place. From the hill there is a splendid view over the surrounding countryside. This is a good picnic place so feel free to bring your own lunch bag!

IDA’S COTTAGE

Ida’s cottage features a completely different story. The cottage is for the memory of an unprivileged woman who lived here in the 1900s. Ida’s cottage is by the roadside. Here lived Ida Jansson (1885–1966) who worked as a maid and cook and gave birth to five illegitimate children. The cottage interior has remained the same since Ida’s days in the cottage.

Jon Henriksen, Matts Stenlund and Marc Svahnström play theatre in the garden of captain Gustaf Erikson’s old villa.

Outdoor theatre in the garden This summer the timeless drama by Nobel prize winner Harold Pinter will be staged in a beautiful old villa garden in Mariehamn. The theatre company Teater Gården with professional actors in its ranks has established a new cultural tradition in Mariehamn – an outdoor summer theatre in a lush old garden of captain Gustaf Erikson, the king of the windjammers, and his family. This year’s play is ”The Caretaker” by Harold Pinter. It is a psychological study of the confluence of power, allegiance, innocence, and corruption among two brothers, Aston and Mick, and Davis, the tramp. The roles are played by Jon Henriksen, Matts Stenlund and Marc Svahnström. The audience is seated outdoors and distances between the seats are adjusted according to the current Covid-19 restrictions.

MORE TO CHOOSE The local amateur theatre Teater Alandica has a lot going on. The newly written drama ”Drottningklev” by Robert Liewendahl will be played on Sottunga in August. The story is based on an incident from the summer of 1347 when Queen Blanka stepped ashore at Sottunga after her ship came off course. The Queen was on her way to Vårdö to meet her husband, King

Magnus Eriksson. The name Drottningklev still lives on Sottunga as a name of a beach.

AN IBSEN PLAY AND A MUSICAL

In September, Teater Alandica stages Henriks Ibsen’s ”A Doll’s House” at Alandica in Mariehamn. In October it is the première of Grease, the famous musical by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. THEATRE PERFORMANES, check the events calendar for times and places.

The artists Jonas Wilén and Ernst Billgren.

Billgren meets Wilén Ernst Billgren from Sweden and Jonas Wilén from Åland – two artists meet in a joint exhibition at the Åland Art Museum this summer. Ernst Billgren is a big name in Sweden. Jonas Wilén is a well-known contemporary artist in Åland. They are both said to have some things in common – they are versatile, have intelligent humour and like to paint imaginative animal interpretations. The Åland Art Museum has invited them to a joint exhibition which is on display until September.

MORE ARTS

For more fine arts, visit the Önningeby Art Museum in Jomala. The exhibition displays works by Scandinavian plein-air artists of the turn of the century 1900s. They stayed in the village and painted together, e.g. Victor Westerholm, J.A.G Acke and Elin Danielson-Gambogi, among others.

Juha Pykäläinen is one of Åland’s most productive contemporary artists and shows his works at Galleri Juha P, housed in an art supplies store in Mariehamn. Many of his motifs are derived from Åland nature. During the Art Circuit in September almost thirty local professional artists, artisans and designers open their ateliers for visitors. Meet them in their studios and see how the works are created.

Visit the Post and Customs House in Eckerö to see the result! The Åland Arts and Handicrafts association has created a popular tradition; an annual craft exhibition in the grand Post & Customs House in Eckerö. The summer exhibition is called Festival. The themed exhibition features all kinds of festive occasions. The artisans work on different materials and techniques and they have interpreted the theme freely. There are works by over 20 artisans from Åland and also by workshop leaders from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Estonia. The exhibition is displayed in the upper floor of the Post and Customs House which

itself is worth a visit. The building was built during the Russian era and was completed in 1828. It also offers a splendid view over the Åland Sea. One of the rooms downstairs is decorated in Russian empire style of the first half of the 19th century.

Scratch the surface of the fascinating Bomarsund is filled with memories from a fascinating era in the history of Åland. Explore the area and see the remains of the fortress walls and building foundations.. The fortress area of Bomarsund is one of Åland’s most unique attractions. It dates back to the time when Åland was in the focus of the superpowers’ interests. After the war of 1808-1809 a new border between Sweden and Russia was drawn west of Åland, and Åland and Finland became a grand duchy under the Russian empire. The Russians had grand plans for Åland and began to build a fortress in Bomarsund. The aim was to build a strong and mighty, but aesthetically pleasing fortress. A garrison town called Skarpans grew around the fortress. The houses were beautifully constructed and colourfully 58 – www.aland.com

painted and with well-tended gardens along straight streets, as described in a small booklet ”Bomarsund. Outpost of Empire”. In Skarpans there were, among other things, a schoolhouse, a chemist and stores, and there lived over 3,000 people, a considerable number or residents in those days.

BOMBARDED AND BURNED In 1854 Bomarsund was invaded by French and British troops, and the fortress was blown up. Now there remain ruins of both the main fortress and the defense towers up on the hills. The civilian houses were burnt to the ground, but the house foundations are still there. You can see them when you go walking through Skarpans! In the middle of the house foundations there are small overgrown mounds of tile masses after broken chimneys.

Coastal Past App is an excellent companion on your visit to Bomarsund. In addition to historical facts, you can see images and drawings of the mighty fortress construction project. The App can be downloaded in four languages at Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Bomarsund There is also a 4-kilometre hiking trail in the area. The trail passes strategic places and many information boards depict the building project that was never completed. For example, a large fortified barrack block with a half a kilometre long facade was planned in the valley. The building was never completed.

Seal safari with dinner See seals up close and enjoy a freshly cooked fish dinner served on smooth seaside rocks. The sea safaris start from Jurmo island in the northeastern archipelago of Åland. You can see grey seals commonly in the sea areas around Åland. Sometimes they stick their curious heads out of the sea and sometimes you can see them resting on islets and skerries in the archipelago. At times you can get really close to them, just a few metres away. Kaj Lundberg on Jurmo island in Brändö archipelago arranges seal safaris by booking from midsummer until August. The outboard motorboat is open so the tours are weather dependent. Whatever the weather, it’s always important to dress warmly and comfortably when out at sea.

MUCH MORE

Those who want an archipelagic expe-

rience out of the ordinary can book a three-course dinner to go with the safari. Kaj cooks the dinner on his outdoor stove onshore one of the islands. He usually starts with filleting whitefish and serves it as a starter, ”Jurmo sushi”. For main course he serves perch fillets and for dessert flamed bananas with ice cream. As a guest you can join the cooking or just watch and learn how a native islander fillets a fish. There are also other companies around Åland offering tours in the archipelago, see pages 40-45.

Day trip to the island of Sottunga See more of Åland! Take a ferry to Sottunga island municipality. Go hiking along trails, or cycle around and enjoy a dinner in the visitors’ marina. The ferry from the main island leaves from Långnäs harbor, about 30km east of Mariehamn. The crossing takes one hour, and when the weather is nice you can sit outdoors on the deck. The ferry runs according to the timetable – check the times for the Southern ferry line. The ferry is free for passengers while you pay for the vehicles. If you bring a car, please book your crossing in advance. Or, bring a bicycle! Sottunga with less than a hundred inhabitants, is like made to be discovered by bike.

HIKING TRAILS

By bike you can see most of the island on a day trip. Here you will find a village harbour with old boathouses, among other things.

You can also follow three hiking trails; 1.5km starting from Sottunga cottage village, 2.5km from the marina and 3km starting from the school. The small wooden church is also worth a visit. Also visit the café and restaurant Salteriet in the visitors’ marina. Many visit Salteriet for the schnitzel, something of a signature dish for the restaurant. The classic dish tastes extra delicious in the beautiful archipelago setting. There are also different fish dishes on the menu.

Gastropub Bodegan.

Delicious meals amidst charming Can there be more archipelago over a meal than at Bodegan in Käringsund? Here you sit and enjoy your meal on a jetty surrounded by red and gray boat huts. Gastropub Bodegan might not be Åland’s most luxurious summer restaurant, but definitely one of the most charming ones. The location is perfect. The restaurant is squeezed in amidst the old boat houses in Käringsund fishing harbour, Åland’s largest village harbour where the huts stand next to each other in a sheltered natural harbour. Sit indoors or outdoors on the jetty, depending on the weather and mood. The dishes on the menu are hearty and tasty, such as pickled or smoked fish with creamed potatoes. Before or after the meal you can go walking on the seaside rocks and enjoy the views, join a wildlife safari and see deer 64 – www.aland.com

and wild boar up close in the nearby game enclosure. Or a visit to the Åland Hunting and Fishing museum next door!

MORE TASTES OF ÅLAND

There is a wide range of restaurants in Mariehamn. Try also the restaurants Nautical, Indigo and Kvarter5. All three have been qualified and listed on the White Guide Nordic restaurant guide. Black bread of Åland The Åland black bread is baked of malt, rye flour and syrup. The ingredients give the bread a rich taste and keep it moist for a long time. When does the black bread taste the best? Some serve it with butter and to go with a fish soup. Others prefer it as a starter with pickled whitefish or salmon. Humlan’s garden café.

It’s time for ”fika” and lunch! Fika time with something homemade? Or maybe a lunch? There are many cosy cafés and restaurants to choose from all around Åland. Cafés in Mariehamn are open year round and they take pride in serving freshly baked buns, cakes and cookies. Many also offer lunch dishes, such as soups, pies and salads. There are also many cozy cafés in the countryside during the summer season. Some of them are surrounded by childfriendly lawns, just like Humlan’s garden café in Norrby, and others can be housed in skippers’ homesteads, like Pellas in Granboda. Local ingredients are important for many café owners. They praise, among other things, the Åland butter which is churned in artisan manner at the Ålandsmejeriet dairy 66 – www.aland.com

Enjoy a break in the realm of apples Västanträsk is a real apple village. Here the apple trees grow in long rows. From the patio at Grannas Bistro you can enjoy the view over the endless orchards. In the 1940s local innovative farmers discovered that the climate in Åland with high numbers of sun hours during the summer and a mild autumn weather is well suited for fruit farming. Apple orchards are especially common in the northern parts of Åland. Here the trees are densely planted in rows and the blossoming in the early summer is a beautiful sight. The Grannas apple farm in the village Västanträsk has one of the largest apple orchards in Åland. The farm welcomes visitors at Grannas Bistro, where you can take a coffee break during the season. Åland apples are sold in local grocery store. Grannas and Karl-Ers Frukt also produce freshly pressed apple juice. 70 – www.aland.com

Tasty fish over the counter Fish for lunch or dinner today? If you don’t fish there is a lot to choose from in the local fish shops. Some catch a perch or two from the seashore by their cottage and smoke the catch for lunch or dinner. If you don’t have that opportunity or don’t want to fish, don’t worry. The help is near. Around the Maxinge shopping centre area in the outskirts of Mariehamn you can find fish shops.

Geta have their own fish stall by the parking lot outside the grocery store Kantarellen. Here they sell their own catch that they have smoked, pickled or marinated in different spiced sauces. The stall is open on certain days a week. Anderssons Fisk sell fresh fish outside the grocery store Erik Mattsson in Godby a couple of days a week. You can almost always find perch, pikeperch and whitefish at the stall.

TAKE-AWAY FISH DISHES

The fish shops Fiskkojan and Fina Fisken have a wide selection of both fresh and smoked fish. They also offer take-away dishes for a lighter lunch or as an appetizer or main course. It’s easy to get inspired when you see their fish counters filled with all the delicacies. The Bergman fisherman brothers from 72 – www.aland.com

for everyone A SMALL BIG CITY

Mariehamn is a miniature metropole with all services at hand. Shipping has always played a great role in Mariehamn. Many shipping companies have their headquarters in Mariehamn. You’re always close to the sea. There are excellent ports for passenger and cargo ships, as well as for yachts. Beautiful wooden houses See beautiful wooden houses built in Mariehamn around the 1900s when the young town’s spa hotel attracted guests from the East and the West. The locals rented summer rooms for the visitors. Many of the houses were designed by Hilda Hongell, Finland’s first female master builder. Several preserved houses can be seen along Södragatan, Mariegatan and Norragatan streets. PHOTO: Visit Åland

In Sonck’s footsteps The Finnish architect Lars Sonck (1870– 1956) designed several buildings in Mariehamn. Go walking on his footsteps! The Town Hall, church, customs house and the so-called Doctor’s villa in Badhusparken are some of his works, as well the decorative red building ÅSS Pavilion that houses a restaurant in the Western Harbour. For a longer walk you can visit Mariehamn’s cemetery with a burial chapel built according to Sonck’s drawings.

The town of a thousand linden trees One of the characteristics of Mariehamn is the Esplanade, a broad linden alley between the Eastern and the Western harbour. The Esplanade is beautiful in all seasons, with its virgin green lush of spring, dark and verdant green tree tops in the summer and bright yellow leaves in the autumn. In wintertime, the bare branches create a graphic work of art. The local poet and lecturer Georg Kåhre (1899–1969] described Mariehamn as “the town of a thousand linden trees” in one of his poems.

The trail goes up along the rocky seashore, where ramps and stairs have been built. Here you enjoy the evening sun and views of the harbour entrance. The rocks also offer fine picnic spots. Further on in the fishing harbour the trail continues behind a large red house and leads through residential areas to

the eastern shore of Mariehamn. Here, the terrain is more flat and with grass and reed growing by the shore. As you approach the town centre you walk past the wooded meadow of Tullarns Äng ’s meadow. You can end the hike in the town centre or continue along the pedestrian and cycle path towards Nabben beach and its newly constructed wetland. From Nabben it is easy to return back to the Western Harbour, mostly along pedestrian and cycle paths. This roundtrip is altogether about 13 kilometres. For more tips on walking trails in Mariehamn, see www.mariehamn.ax/stadsvandring. and safe and are found in every day care centre and in many homes. www.aland.com – 83

Boat building and crafts Stroll around the Maritime Quarter on the eastern shore of Mariehamn and feel the genuine atmosphere. The Maritime Quarter is open year round, so feel free to stroll around! For the time being, there are two major boat building projects – the galleass Emelia and the yacht Alanta. The ribs for the hull of the Emilia are built in one of the halls of the boatyard and later on she will be moved outdoors. Here you can see how the galleass grows and takes shape.

MARINA FOR WOODEN BOATS The Maritime Quarter also offers a marina for traditional wooden boats, and there are many gems to admire. At the pier lies the 84 – www.aland.com

galleass Albanus that offers archipelago sailing excursions. The marina is also the home port for the Sunnan II cruise ship. You can also visit two museums – one displaying boat archipelago ship building traditions and one with a large collection of refurbished hot-bulb engines.

CRAFTS In the Maritime Quarter you can also visit Åland’s largest crafts house Salt and the jewellery shop Guldviva with a workshop. Other artisans also have their workshops in the Maritime Quarter where various events are arranged. There is also a café selling food and beverages in the area. Anna Karlsson at Oktober.

Handprinted fabric by Gunilla von Nandelstadh at Salt.

Local crafts and design Jewellery and forged utensils. Ceramics. Fabrics with hand-printed pattern, knitted garments and carpets. The local craft shops offer products that you can’t find anywhere else! There are many craft shops in Mariehamn to be visited, such as Salt, Ele & Kele, Viktor Craft & Design as well as well the jewellery shop Guldviva. They are open all year round. The artisans have one thing in common; they are professional crafters who design and manufacture the items by hand. Every rug, plaid or shawl has been woven at the loom, weft by weft. Each bowl has been thrown at the wheel and every colour on the fabric has been printed by hand, colour by colour. Each piece of jewellery has been forged,

soldered, sanded and polished before it can be sold.

RECYCLING

Some artisans also pay tribute to recycling. Anna Karlsson at Oktober makes bijouterie, among other things, of leather, yarn, denim fabric, cartridge sleeves and canvas. Her recycled design products are sold at Viktors Craft & Design.
