GOOD TO KNOW
The 100th anniversary of the autonomous Åland Islands A hundred years of the Åland autonomy is being celebrated properly with an abundance of festivities throughout the year.
Åland Peace Institute conducts research and raises awareness about minorities and autonomies.
The theme of the celebrations is ”100 years of willfulness”. Autonomy has enabled Ålanders to create the perfect conditions for the unique way of life on the red granite islands in the Baltic Sea. In June 1921, the League of Nations in Geneva decided that Åland should be an autonomous region within the borders of Finland. As part of the agreement, Åland became a demilitarized zone to remove the military threat to Sweden. To this day, there is no military on the Åland Islands and Ålanders are exempt from military service in Finland.
CELEBRATIONS THROUGHOUT 2022 One year after the League of Nations decision in Geneva, Åland’s elected parliament met for the first time on June 9 1922. Julius Sundblom, editor-in-chief of the newspaper Åland, was elected chairman. A statue of Sundblom stands in the square of Mariehamn. A speech will be given here on 9 June, which is Åland’s Autonomy Day. The centennial anniversary of Åland’s autonomy has been celebrated one year, since June 9, 2021. The celebrations will continue all year 2022. The highlights include various events, for example the great four-day anniversary party on 9-12 June. Read more about the programme at www.visitaland.com.
THE ÅLAND EXAMPLE Åland’s autonomy is now used as an example and model for peaceful solutions to minority conflicts around the world. The

Travelling around Åland Åland consists of the main island and thousands of other islands of all sizes around it. Many of the bigger islands are inhabited and you can reach them by the local inter-island ferries. It is easy to explore the Åland Islands. On the main island there are four main roads with public bus connections to the ferry harbours. Apart from the main roads there are hundreds of kilometres of scenic village roads offering a lot to see and experience. To help you find your way, you can buy Åland Tourist & Cycling Map, a good companion in every weather! THE ARCHIPELAGO When the locals talk about the archipelago, they talk about the islands located east of the main island. These islands can be reached by Ålandstrafiken’s inter-island ferries. You can make day trips to the islands or stay overnight.
Here are some basic facts good to know when you are planning a visit to the archipelago. Main road 2 leads to Vårdö. There is a short cable ferry crossing operated 24/7 and you don’t need to book the ferry in advance. From Hummelvik ferry harbour on Vårdö you can take a ferry to Kumlinge and Brändö on the Northern archipelago ferry route. You can catch a Southern route ferry to Sottunga and Kökar from Långnäs harbour at the end of the main road 3 to Lumparland. There is also a ferry connection on the intermediate ferry route between Föglö and Kumlinge. To Föglö take a ferry från Svinö ferry harbour, follow the main road 3. The Föglö ferry has many daily departures, and no booking is required. For all other ferries, please remember to make a ferry booking for your vehicle in advance!

POPULAR PADEL PadelCenter Åland offers a new hall with three padel courts and a single court, where you can rent balls and basic rackets, but there is also a digital kiosk for a wider equipment selection. Padel can also be played outdoors at MLK Tennis club’s courts next to Bollhalla in northern Mariehamn and in Käringsund Resort in Eckerö.
ACTIVITIES
Relaxing holiday activities Enjoy outdoor activities on land and at sea. Play disc golf, test an adventure trail, rent a mountain bike or a water scooter. Åland is currently a paradise for disc golfers, with 12 courses to choose from and several more planned. Disc golf is free to play, and you can even play multiple courses in a single day. Combine the 18hole course at Geta with a lunch break at Soltuna, followed by a hike to the Getabergen caves or the children’s favourite, the Trollstigen tell-a-tale trail. On the archipelago island of Seglinge, the course runs partly through hazel groves, and in Grelsby, the disc golf course is found by the local brewery Stallhagen. Up among the pines at Vårdö, you’ll get your adrenaline fix and tackle a variety of serious challenges at Flowpark. On the dizzying adventure course, you’ll make your way through challenging obstacles and keep your balance through ropeways. At
the highest point in the course, you’ll find yourself 15 metres above the ground, but there are also courses with lower heights and three different levels. Forest terrain and a horse or mountain bike will get you moving and give you a healthy dose of fresh air. There is no shortage of forest roads and trails for active horseback riders and cyclists to choose from. The Eckerö mountain bike trail includes a three-kilometre long beginner section with beautiful views and exciting jumps. Bikers who want to challenge themselves can try to beat the trail record using the Strava training app. WATER SPORTS In Åland you can try a variety of water sports, such as surfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and jet skiing. Equipments are available for rent.

FOREST BATHING AND ORIENTEERING The forests and nature are an experience unto themselves. You can just plop yourself down on any log or rock you find, simply sit back and enjoy the show. Or, test mindfulness in the forest through forest bathing or forest yoga. Orienteering is a more active way to experience nature. The orienteering section of IFK Mariehamn sports club has planned an orienteering game called “Skogsråddet” with over 50 control points that can be found in the forest area in the outskirts of Mariehamn. A map costs 15 Euro and is sold at Visit Åland, City Sport & Cykel and Team Sportia.

Cultural landscapes by bike Go cycling north of Mariehamn and experience charming countryside villages, a medieval church and nature’s own cave church deep in a crevice. Stop for a coffee along the way and take a dip in the sea at Bambölevik beach.
Then continue along Godbyvägen road until you turn west to Emkarbyvägen and make a short detour to Judy’s Ceramics & Arts with a pottery studio and a shop in Gölby’s former slaughterhouse.
Åland offers great bike rides in all directions on designated cycling lanes as well as on winding village roads with little traffic. You can, for example, follow Godbyvägen out of Mariehamn and cycle north towards St. Olof’s Church in Jomala, one of the oldest stone churches in Finland, dating from the 1280s. In the neighbouring village of Ingby you can follow a hiking trail and find a completely different kind of church called “Troll Church” in an 11-metre-deep cavelike gorge. On the Ingbyberget hilltop there is a lookout tower, picnic tables, Bronze Age burial mounds and an ancient shingle beach.
COFFEE AND SWIMMING Solkulla Gård bakery and café is the number one stop when you need to boost your energy level. Enjoy freshly baked sweet and salty treats, and try the specialities of the house, such as Närpes Grisar and PizzÅla. Further on Svartsmaravägen you will pass the community hall of Karl Ers with a midsummer pole on the way to Bambölevik beach. On the sandy bathing beach there are also smooth seaside rocks and a diving tower. The distance from Mariehamn to Bamböle is about 21 kilometres, but you can make the tour shorter.

World class golf with a sea view Slottsbanan is praised by golfers for its beautiful stretches along the Slottssundet sound, where you can enjoy stunning sea views from all 18 holes. And, it’s not just the golfers who rank Slottsbanan so high. The Ladies European Tour, which is the second highest international women’s tour in the world, also sees the course’s potential and has chosen to host one of the tournaments in Åland in the beginning of September. Some 120 international professional women golfers will gather at Ålands Golfklubb to compete on the Slottsbanan course, an event that is expected to draw a big audience. In addition to Slottsbanan, Åland also has Kungsbanan, a beautiful 18-hole course with forested grounds. The Prinsessan short hole course, with its six par 3 holes, is perfect for anyone wanting to give golf a try or work on their technique. At the club’s facility in Kastelholm, there is another 18-hole course, King’s Course,
and Prinsessan with six short holes. Changing rooms with a sauna, driving range, shop and restaurant are also available as well as the opportunity of taking golf lessons. GOLF IN ECKERÖ You can find even more beautiful greens and fairways at Eckerö Golf on the west coast of Åland. Golfers of every skill level enjoy it here thanks to the four tees on the club’s 18-hole course. This gives everyone the chance to finish holes on their handicap. The first nine holes of the course are a bit easier, while the last nine are longer and more challenging. Guest players with a green card and membership in another golf club are welcome. There is a driving range and a service building with showers and accommodation in holiday cottages next to the course.

Scenic hiking trail in Långbergen The first Ålanders were seal hunters who settled down at Långbergen Saltvik during the Stone Age 7,500 years ago. Today, Långbergen is a popular hiking destination with beautiful sea views and interesting history. The area around Långbergen is the highest in Åland. Due to post-glacial rebound the land has risen after the end of the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Up on the hilltops there are traces of ancient shingle beaches which are now located 100 metres above sea level. The 5.5-kilometre long nature trail in Långbergen is medium difficult and signposted with white stones. You can start at the northern car park and take the culture path southwards past Östra Jansmyra, one of the oldest Stone Age settlements in Åland. Or you can also start in the south and walk north from Vargstensslätten. Both trails lead through a forest up to
the hill. The sea view of the northern archipelago is well worth every uphill step. From Långbergen you can also see the highest point of Åland, Orrdalsklint with 129 metres above sea level. Feel free to bring a picnic. Along the trail there are several picnic spots. ART & HISTORY Before or after hiking in Lånbergen you can visit the Cultural History Museum of Åland and learn more about the life in Åland thousands of years ago. On the way to Långbergen you will pass Kvarnbo village. The art gallery Skarpans attracts with contemporary art and exhibitions. Combine art with a coffee at Vinsmedjan next door, or at Glassboden Café in the same village.

Unique archipelago experiences All around the Åland archipelago there are many interesting islands to visit. Remote solitary islands such as Sälskär, Lågskär and Märket have lighthouses. On Björkör there is an archipelago homestead dating back to the 18th century. You can visit the islands on guided tours offered by several taxi boat companies. Björkör island southwest of Föglö is a nature reserve with an old homestead that gives a unique insight into the archipelago life of the past. Further out at sea lies Lågskär, halfway between Åland and the coast of Sweden. Märket is located northwest of Åland where the national border between Finland and Sweden crosses the small island. The former pilot station of Kobba Klintar, just off Mariehamn, is a popular day trip destination. There is a small marina and a café. The old pilot house is open for visitors and exhibitions and concerts are arranged in the white beacon.
Guided boat tours to the white and slender lighthouse of Sälskär island in the northern archipelago start from Skarpnåtö in Hammarland and Hällö in Geta. This summer the lighthouse is closed for public due to renovation, but the island is always worth a visit. Sälskär has a lot to offer for those interested in botany. Here plants such as wild blackcurrants and cranberries have taken root in the crevices. There is also a large colony of nesting razorbills on the neighbouring islet. EIDER SAFARI Every spring and early summer, the association Ådans Vänner offers guided boat trips to see the nesting Eider birds on Bätskären island. Here you can see the incubating Eiders up close and learn more about the area and the protection of the diving ducks.

Kayaking in all directions Åland is perfect for kayaking, and not only in the summer. Spring and autumn are also excellent seasons for kayaking explorations. When going by kayak, the water will show you the way, with endless possibilities to be found among the thousands of islands and skerries. You’ll find everything from calm bays for beginners to more challenging paddling water in the outer archipelago, where you can land just about anywhere for a refreshing dip in the sea. The Norrhavsrutten kayaking route is a tip for those who look for challenges. The entire route extends from Käringsund in the west to Jurmo in the east. Norrhavsrutten is nothing for beginners, but you can easily choose to paddle only parts of it. Or, go kayaking with a guide. You can also cross the tougher parties by carrying your kayak on an archipelago ferry. Good kayaking skills and sea kayaking experience are
essential for the entire route. Between Skarpnåtö and Hamnsundet there are two route suggestions. The outer route is for advanced kayakers who manage outer archipelago and the challenges of the Northern Baltic Sea. The inner route is more sheltered, but you need to carry the kayak a few hundred metres to or from Tjudö lake. FOR BEGINNERS A lovely little three-hour tour can be made by starting at Käringsund, paddling around Främstön and Mellanön islands and then returning through Bredsund. Along this route, there are uninhabited areas where you can stop for a break. You can hire canoes/kayaks in Åland. Canoes/kayaks can be driven to a desired put-in and picked up when you are done, provided that the location can be reached by car.

ACTIVITIES
Åland winter activities Winters with snow and cold weather offer fun activities for everyone keen on winter sports.
Snowpark ”Tövelbranten” challenges with jumps and boxes.
With the help of snow cannons, the ski and biathlon centre of Åland offers tracks for cross-country skiing behind Vikingahallen in Jomala. Maintenance of tracks with artificial snow is not a problem even if the winter weather is not on your side. Whatever the weather, the centre aims to maintain at least a 350-metre-long loop for all enthusiastic cross-country skiers. The colder the winter, the more artificial snow and a longer loop. Winters with a lot of natural snow increase the length to an 8.5-kilometre long course. For those who prefer downhill skiing there is Germundö Alpin attracting both slalom skiers and snowboarders to the snowy slopes in Saltvik. If you want a fast ride, choose steep “Valters brant”, while “Ekoslingan” offers a little calmer ride.
ON ICE In winter, you can also lace up your long-distance skates and go gliding across the icy expanses. When the winter is very cold you can get a long skating season starting when the first lakes and sea inlets freeze and finally ending with magical frozen expanses by the edge of the open sea. Strong ice also offers ice fishing. You can drill or cut a hole in the ice, but remember to be careful. If you are not familiar with the area, it is best to go fishing or skating with a guide. You can also enjoy winter sports indoors. Go skating in the ice hall Islandia or try curling at Eckerö curling hall.

Many sports contests to choose from! Join a sports event while in Åland! For example, try Åland Swimrun and go swimming from one island to another and then running across them. Åland Swim Run is a challenge that demands true grit, particularly in the classes geared toward experienced athletes. The courses in the outer archipelago cross islands and open water through a landscape that has everything from waves and wind to slippery rocks. Not to mention beautiful views. Fortunately, there are also classes for ordinary fitness buffs who want to test their limits. Many people love being able to combine training and competing with family holidays. In many cases, competition days are real family gatherings, where even members of the family not competing can find plenty to do, either in the competition area or anywhere in Åland.
Road cyclists say that Åland is the Mallorca of the North, but better! This is due to lighter traffic combined with ideal roads and beautiful natural surroundings. A total of 1,100 kilometres of public roads and 150 kilometres of bike trails are perfect for anyone who wants to get in a cycling workout on their holiday. Or compete in a bike race. FINISHING OFF THE SEASON Close out the competition season with a run in October, when the air is clear and loaded with oxygen. The 22 kilometre-long Kanonloppet (Cannon Run) crosses varied terrain, while the Åland Marathon & ½ Marathon is a city run through the streets of Mariehamn. Then, you can loosen up your tired muscles with a steamy sauna and good night’s sleep at the hotel.

Biking in Åland Åland is a pleasant place for biking, with lovely sceneries and many places of interest. In order for you to have a safe and nice bicycle trip, here is some advice on what you as a cyclist should know. Did you know that the bike is a vehicle and its rider a driver? Thus, the same rules apply for bicycles as for other vehicles. Right-hand traffic applies for cyclists on roads and on cycle paths too. As a driver of a vehicle you must observe right of way for vehicles approaching from the right. This doesn’t mean you can simply charge ahead into an intersecting roadway without looking. You have to exercise the care that circumstances demand. This is all about interaction with other people and respect for agreements and rules of traffic. For your own safety you need to pay attention in every situtation even if you have the right of way.
Don´t forget your helmet, it´s a cheap life insurance!
Please remember only children under 12 years of age can ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. Cyclists can travel side by side only when this can be done without danger, and not at all on sidewalks. Bicycles with more than two wheels, as well as mopeds, can’t be driven side by side with another bicycle or moped at all. Sign well in advance when making a turn, look behind you and make sure you can turn without risk. A safe bicycle is equipped with a bell, working brakes, white reflector in front, red in back, orange spoke reflectors (2 pcs) and lamp back and front. Use a reflective vest while biking to make sure you’re visible at a distance. Last but not least, don’t forget your helmet, it’s a cheap life insurance!
Road signs to be aware of Walkway This is a walkway, biking not allowed. Walkway/cycle path This path is divided into one part for pedestrians and one for cyclists. The symbols on the sign tell you which part is meant for which category. Right of way Cyclists entering a road area from a cycle path must observe right of way. This means that you lower your speed in time or stop, and you can only continue when there is no traffic with right of way. NB! As a cyclist ou must always observe right of way, even when the crossing is marked in white for cyclists.
We wish you a safe and pleasant bike ride on Åland
Stop sign All vehicles must stop at this sign, this also includes bicycles. Pedestrian crossing All vehicles, including bicycles, must let pedestrians cross. At a crossing with no marking in white for cyclists, you should walk your bicycle across. Bicycle path The sign indicates distance to a location along the bicycle path. Bicycle crossing When you are crossing a road via a bicycle crossing, you must give way to crossing traffic.

Experience nature with glamour Glamping, in other words glamorous camping, is perfect for you who want to enjoy nature in an adventurous way, but still within your comfort zone. Glamping is to sleep in a tent amidst nature, but on a mattress in a real bed. Outdoors, but in a spacious tent with high ceiling and comfortable furnishing. Glamping provides the perfect experience to enjoy luxury and glamour in nature. Rundhusbyn offers glamping tents for rent. You choose the time and place, and the tent will be pitched up and furnished for you. If you want extra comfort you can choose a tent with a stove. Or, rent a sauna tent! Beaches and campsites are popular sites for glamping, but Rundhusbyn also offers customised all-in-one packages with a tent on a private location on an isthmus in northern Saltvik.
If you long for a wood heated hot tub or sauna for your accommodation, you can rent one from AX Rent. They offer mobile saunas and hot tubs that are easy to transport on a trailer. At Sandösund Resort in Vårdö you can relax in a floating sauna. EVERYMAN’S RIGHTS In Åland the right of common access, Everyman’s rights, is more limited than in Sweden and on the mainland of Finland. Campsites are recommended for an overnight stay, unless you have the landowner’s permission for wild camping. All campsites are located on scenic places by the sea, and they offer bathing beaches, saunas and other services. Read more about the right of common access at Visitaland.com

Become an Ålander! Here we look beyond the horizon and are constantly open to new opportunities.
LIVING ON AN ISLAND LEAVES ITS MARK. Surrounded by the sea and exposed to forces of nature, we Ålanders have developed our own mentality, a pride and willfulness, typical of islanders. We dare to choose our own way and believe in our own skills. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE IN ÅLAND. If it has not already been done, it waits to be done. There is a strong faith in future and an impressively wide variation, and we help each other upwards. Everybody is important in a small community shaped by the wild sea. Fun summer days for the family Beaches, indoor playgrounds and museums with fun activities make it easy for families to enjoy Åland. Actually, all it takes to make the whole family happy is sun and a place to swim. Sand beaches for families with small children and, for the older kids, a diving platform is just the ticket. All these can be found on bathing beaches such as Bambölevik, Västerviken and Sinting, while Degersand attracts with its fine sandy beach. In Mariehamn there are three child-friendly beaches to choose from: Nabben, Lilla Holmen and Gröna Udden. The swimming centre of Mariebad is perfect for rainy days. FULL OF LIFE AT LEKLANDET The kids just love Leklandet’s inflatable attractions and action-packed playtime in both Bollhalla in Mariehamn and Eck-
eröhallen in Eckerö. The Smart Park family park in Eckerö offers various outdoor activities, but also the indoor Sparks Laser Arena. Playful kids also get an outlet for their energy at Palleralla playground in Jomala. Käringsund Resort in Eckerö is a tip for those who want to experience everything with a day ticket, including a dip in the sea, pool hangout, minigolf, pedal boats and much more. A LOT TO DISCOVER Many museums also offer activities for children. For example, on the tall ship Pommern the children can follow the ship rat Ruby for adventures while the adults enjoy their own audio guide. You can also join a wildlife safari in a game enclosure and see fallow deer, wild boars, ostriches and llamas up close.

HUG A SEA MONSTER Come and say hello to the giant squid, sea serpent, bloody sea cucumber, sea bishop and other mythical sea creatures at the “Sea Monsters” exhibition at the Åland Maritime Museum. Even though the exhibition is aimed at children, it is so informative that the whole family will enjoy it. The massive plush monsters are accompanied by facts and explanations about how people saw the world around them in the Middle Ages. You’ll be able to read, listen, touch and even hug - if you dare!
ÅLANDS EMIGRANT INSTITUTE The small exhibition at the Emigrant Institute displays the lives of Åland emigrants and introduces to some of Åland descendants, such as Haddon Sundblom and Warner Sallman. Sundblom is best known for creating the image of the classic Coca Cola Santa, and Sallman became famous for his iconic painting “The head of Christ” in the United States. The Institute can be visited in an annex to GE Villa at Norra Esplanadgatan 2, weekdays between 12 noon and 4 pm. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions about your Åland ancestors! 44 – www.aland.com

A day in the museums of Mariehamn Being close to everything is one of the advantages of a small town. In Mariehamn you can easily walk from one museum to another and learn about the fine arts, maritime heritage and cultural history of Åland. The basic exhibition of the Cultural History Museum of Åland displays the life of the islanders during the past 7,500 years. The time perspective in the exhibits of the Åland Art Museum is almost as wide, alternating with contemporary art exhibitions. The two museums share the same building and you can visit both with the same ticket. The summer exhibition “Memories and nostalgia” at the Cultural History Museum highlights Åland’s centennial celebrations with objects and photographs from the past hundred years. Åland Peace Institute is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this autumn with a photo exhibition by the Finnish war correspondent Rauli Virtanen. The Museum’s winter exhibition is aimed
at children who are interested in history, but also for every visitor who wants to have a playful insight into Åland’s history. The exhibition opens in December and will be expanded with exciting new stories, just in time for the winter’s sports holiday. MARITIME HISTORY You don’t have to be interested in shipping to appreciate the exhibitions in the Åland Maritime Museum. This year the newly renovated curiosity cabinet is filled with sailors’ souvenirs from the seven seas. Here, for example, you can see a unique pirate flag, one of the two authentic Jolly Roger flags in the world. The playroom Ruby and the Sea is also the kids’ all-time favourite. From May to September, you are welcome to step aboard on the tall ship Pommern and follow a fictive 100-day voyage around the world. A real adventure at sea, even if you stay steadily at the quay!

In the area there are also fine windmills, a boathouse by Slottssundet sea inlet and one of Åland’s foremost sights, Kastelholm Castle. VARIOUS EVENTS Here, Åland’s official midsummer pole is erected on Midsummer’s Eve, this year on the 24th of June. Interesting encounters with visual artists Fine arts flourish in Åland with many professional artists and several fine art museums and galleries. The Åland Art Museum opened in 1963 and today the collections include over 1,300 works with an Ålandic connection. The museum alternates special exhibitions by focusing on local fine arts from a broad perspective. The summer exhibition “In Your Face” presents six female artists with an Ålandic connection and featuring everything from paintings to videos. The wide ranges of different styles is also characteristic of today’s active contemporary artists. PLEIN-AIR ARTS More art works can be found at the Önningeby Art Museum in Jomala, which was built around the artist colony of Nordic painters who stayed in the village around the turn of the century 1900. The Museum
also presents a special exhibition with paintings by the Finnish-Swedish artist Helmi Sjöstrand and the jury-judged exhibition “Freedom” with local contemporary art, displayed until September. You can also see the pride of the museum, namely J.A.G. Acke’s “Snöljus” together with other gems. ART CIRCUIT The artists participating in the annual Konstrundan Art Circuit open their studios and workshops for visitors for interesting encounters and discussions. Many artists also welcome guests by agreement. The art students of Ålands Folkhögskola in Pålsböle present Art Park with the theme ”Åland 100 – a hundred years of willfulness”. The art works can be seen in the park until autumn.

GREETINGS FROM THE MIDDLE AGES What tales might you tell if you were a castle from the 1300s? You would probably never run out of stories to share! You can hear some of these when visiting the well-preserved ruins of Kastleholm Castle. The castle enjoyed its golden age during the reign of Gustav I (Vasa) and his sons. This was the place where, for example, Erik XIV was imprisoned together with his wife Karin Månsdotter.

Discover the events that shaped Åland The Bomarsund fortress ruins have long been a popular attraction, and this year they are extremely topical. A new visitor centre is opening this summer, with completely new exhibits and visitor experiences. After the Finnish War (1808-1809), Åland became the westernmost outpost of the Russian Empire. Construction on coastal fortifications in Bomarsund was started in 1830. Åland and the Ålanders then became a small but important piece in an international power game. At the same time, people from many parts of the Russian Empire came to Bomarsund and a civilian town with shops and schools grew up around the construction, making Bomarsund an economic and political centre. However, the fortress was never completed as it was destroyed by French and British forces
during the Crimean War in 1854, an event that eventually led to today’s demilitarised Åland. GATEWAY TO THE FORTRESS AREA The new visitor centre presents sounds and sights of Bomarsund, and how Russia first conquered Åland and later was forced to capitulate to France and England. There are also carefully designed models that show the warships and buildings during the Bomarsund period. The modern building is perfect for the surroundings and inspires visitors to make own discoveries among the ruins of the magnificent fortress and the remains of the community that grew up around it. There are also signposted hiking trails with information boards in the area.

Even though much of the fortifications has been destroyed, you can still visit the barracks area of two batteries and hike along sections of the stone-paved Russian military roads. www.aland.com – 57
KÖKAR HOMESTEAD MUSEUM The museum depicts the life of the archipelago people in the bygone years. In the area there are boat sheds and traditional boats, but also a new birdwatching deck where you can learn about the archipelago birds. Kökar Week on 30 July-7 August is also worth a visit.
KÄLLSKÄR – THE COUNT’S ISLAND Join a guided boat excursion to the island of Källskär to see interesting nature formations and unique house and garden architecture. The environs were created by the Swedish baron Göran Åkerhielm, also called the Count by the locals. In the late 1960s, he combined Greek cultural heritage with Finnish-Nordic style in the buildings on the island. The result is fascinating. See how a Mediterranean garden meets Karelian style on a barren island out at the sea. There are guided boat tours daily from Hotel Brudhäll in the peak summer.
ENJOY FOOD AND SAUNA Hotel Brudhäll and Havspaviljongen offer sauna and delicious meals in scenic environs next to the sea. Havspaviljongen attracts with a beach sauna and a restaurant up on smooth seaside rocks with wonderful sea views. Brudhäll is located in a marina, right by a jetty. Here you can book an architect-designed two-storey sauna with a jacuzzi.

Visit Kökar Åland has a myriad of island and skerries and one of the world’s most spectacular archipelagos. For example, take Kökar, the southernmost municipality of Åland. You can visit it on a day trip, but you might as well stay a couple of days. The ferry from the main island runs along the Southern line from Långnäs harbour, about 30 km from Mariehamn. One way ferry crossing takes 2.5 hours. In fine weather, you can sit out on the deck and enjoy the scenery. The ferry is free of charge for all passengers, while you need to pay for a vehicle. Make a booking for your vehicle in advance! Kökar is perfect for cycling and kayaking. Bikes and kayaks can be rented at campsites and many other places on the island. Or, enjoy the scenic landscape and sights by car. Apart from beautiful archipelago nature, Kökar also has an interesting history. In
the Middle Ages, King Valdemar’s passage ran through Kökar which was an important stop for crossings to and from Reval, today known as Tallinn. At this time, also a sailors’ chapel and a Franciscan monastery were built on Hamnö. Today you can visit the ruins of the monastery’s cellar and see artefacts from the excavations. Otterböte, an ancient seal hunters’ dwelling site which was used 2,800 years ago, is also worth a visit. Follow the signposted hiking trail of Kalen to see fine archipelago nature and remains of a Russian coastal battery from World War One. ARCHIPELAGO APPLES Have a taste of Kökar at Peders Aplagård apple farm where apples are turned into sparkling non-alcoholic beverages. The farm runs a summer café and a shop.

Get in to Christmas spirit! Christmas is celebrated thoroughly in Åland with many season’s markets and traditional Christmas buffets. Have a taste of Christmas on Saturday November 26, the day before the first Advent, when the Ålanders celebrate their ”Little Christmas”. Jan Karlsgården’s traditional Christmas market is held at “little Christmas”, on the day before the first Advent Sunday. There are sales of traditional Christmas delicacies, homebaked bread, candies, wreaths, candles, mustards, jams, juices and Christmas-style crafts. Most of the stalls are outdoors so dress according to the weather! A bus transfer from Mariehamn to the market is recommended as it’s usually difficult to find parking space.
IN MARIEHAMN There are several annual Christmas markets with sales of food and crafts in Mariehamn. One of them is held on the town square and pedestrian street on 6 December. CHRISTMAS BUFFETS Both eastern and western Nordic food traditions are seasoned with local archipelagic delicacies and flavours in the traditional Åland Christmas buffet. The restaurants Nautical in Mariehamn and Soltuna in Geta are two good choices for traditional Christmas buffets. Many restaurants serve Christmas buffets from the First Advent until a couple of days before Christmas. Have a taste of the special dishes of the season!

The Harvest Festival focuses on local raw produce and products, and there is a lot to choose from! The main event is on September 16-18. Many farms in the countryside open their gates to visitors. The farms sell cultivated, home-baked and locally produced artisan food, such as charcuterie, cheese, jam and juice. Local arts and crafts are also on offer. Several farms also have a restaurant where you can enjoy local delicacies on site.

Chamber music in late summer August comes with a chamber music festival, also this year. On 9-13 August, the Katrina culture association invites you to a musical festival with the theme “Erasmus music - in the footsteps of Erasmus and humanism”. The inspiration for this year’s chamber music festival is Erasmus of Rotterdam (1466-1536), a Dutch humanist with high educational ideals advocating the path of good conversation towards peace. Musically, the time period includes Renaissance music performed by, among others, the harpsichordist Julio Caballero Pérez, artistic director of the ensemble “El Gran Teatro del Mundo”. Most of the festival’s approximately 14 concerts are held in St. Göran’s Church in Mariehamn, but concerts in Kastelholm Castle and the churches of Finström and Jomala are also on the program, not to mention the traditional breakfast concerts
at Bagarstugan’s cosy café. This year’s house composer is the Finnish composer Sebastian Fagerlund with several chamber music works in the programme. The diverse festival programme has been planned by the artistic director, violinist Cecilia Zilliacus. MUSIC FESTIVALS Åland Organ Festival invites you to the high-class concert series held in Åland churches on 26 June-1 July. Geta Poetry and Visa attracts with a small-scaled music and poetry festival on 2-3 July, while the Nordic song event Visor so in i Norden welcomes with concerts in the archipelago on 8-10 July at Västra Bergen in Kumlinge.

Archipelago restaurant comes into town Åland has many fine restaurants in many different environs and sceneries. Choose your favourite ones! Beautiful garden and good food continue to attract satisfied visitors to Kallas SkärGård in the archipelago municipality of Vårdö. Here Hanna and Timo Vetriö welcome you to their farm restaurant in an old barn. In summer, you are welcome to sit outdoors in a lush garden with its generous outdoor serving area of almost one hectare! Freshly caught fish, but also seafood, is the specialty of the house. The restaurant’s shrimp sandwich has become a classic together with pan-fried giant prawns. Before Timo became a restaurateur, he worked as a wholesaler for many years, and it shows. He simply keeps track of all the raw ingredients on the market, even the unusual ones, which means that Kallas often surprises the guests. On the menu you can find everything from freshly caught fish to
tender entrecotes of the highest quality. Feel free to combine your Kallas dining experience with a tour around Vårdö. You can try FlowPark’s high-rope adventure trail, play disc golf, go hiking or visit Vårdö’s museums and sights. MORE CULINARY EXPERIENCES New for this year is that now you can also enjoy the culinary delights of Kallas in Mariehamn. In an old stone house at Norra Esplanadgatan 2, the restaurateurs have opened a new Kallas restaurant with a bar and patio, but with the same successful concept. So, if you liked Kallas in the archipelago, this will be your favourite too. For more culinary experiences in the countryside, visit Michael Björklund’s restaurant Smakbyn in Kastelholm or sit down next to apple orchards at Grannas Bistro in Västanträsk.

Life in the countryside Say hello to forest pigs, take a horse-drawn carriage ride out into the woods, or book a farm day. Farm visits are fun for the whole family! The owners of Nygård’s forest pig farm in Sund focus on small-scaled pig breeding. Here the pigs can go out and dig the soil all year round and simply enjoy life. The hosts Ronja Brenner and Andreas Nordlund invite you to a safari and tell you more about the pigs. Here you can see them up close, and the youngest ones are just four months old! The tours are arranged four Wednesdays in July. You will visit the woods and pastures with a tractor-pulled wagon. At one of the pastures there is a longer stop when you can feed the pigs. The tour takes about 1.5 hours and coffee is served afterwards. In addition to pigs, there are also horses on the farm. Wednesdays in July at 15
o’clock Ronja offers a horse-drawn carriage ride, just like people used to do in the past. Pig safaris and carriage rides need to be booked in advance. FARMER’S DAY The Norrgården farm in the neighbouring municipality of Saltvik is run by Catherine Lindholm and Jonas Högström who have horses, cows, rabbits and pigs. Norrgården offers various farm activities, such as farmer’s days when you can learn more about the farm life by taking care of animals and helping with different farm tasks. Charming countryside cafés A trip to the countryside is always more fun if you have something delicious to look forward to. Here are some tips on pleasant cafés for those who cycle or drive from Mariehamn along the main road No. 2. Make the first stop at the café of Brobacka B&B in Björsby. Even if Brobacka is close to the main road, it offers serenity and silence in its verdant garden. The red painted wooden house with its country style interiors and a garden is a pleasant oasis. Take your time, enjoy a fresh lunch, or have a coffee under the lilacs and silver poplars by the creek. FRESH WAFFLES Continue through Godby and then turn right towards Strömsängarna and Greta’s small farm café and shop with selected second-hand products. Sit indoors or in the garden and treat yourself to freshly baked
waffles and other home-baked goodies. You can also ask for a coffee basket to take down to the beach. The hosts Greta Sundström and Birger Karlsson are also good accordion players, so if you are lucky you can hear them play for you! ÅLAND PANCAKE Well worth a visit is also the café Uffe på Berget on an outlook place by Färjsundsbron bridge. Here you can enjoy sweet and salty treats together with beautiful views over Saltvik. Åland pancake was recently voted the Ålandic dish of the century and it is also the café’s bestseller. Johanna’s Hembakta stone oven bakery with a café at Pensionate Stalldalen in Grelsby is well worth taking a short detour from the main road!

Delicious and inspiring artisanal food Artisanal foods are flourishing in Åland, thanks to outstanding raw produce and creative food artisans. It is easy to fill both the glass and the plate with local food and beverages. Many farms refine their own raw ingredients. Milk is turned into cheese at Mattas farm dairy, meat is used to produce tasty sausages at Marskogens Lamm sheep farm and organically grown grains are milled into meals at Överäng Mill. Apple growers such as Grannas, Snäckö Frukt and Öfvergårds have refined their ability to make use of the entire harvest by producing fresh-pressed apple juice, chutney and pickled “äppelskott” (unripe windfall apples). Many farms and food artisans welcome visitors on guided tours.

The Food Truck’s specialty is fresh grated Åland potato fried in a waffle pan and served with various condiments, such as red onion, sour cream and whitefish roe. The candy makers of Karamelleriet at Smakbyn have succeeded in capturing the flavour of wild strawberries in their rock candy. Stop by and check out the entertaining process of candy making! At Västerro, the fisherman and food artisan Anders Westerberg experiments with the bounty of the land and sea in his special smokery and gastronomic greenhouse. Here you can book different dining experiences for you and your friends.

Our home port is the Maritime Quarter of Mariehamn
Mariehamn – the hub of Åland In Mariehamn, all you need is within a few blocks; shopping, restaurants, cafés, culture and a gentle hubbub. Mariehamn, the smallest metropolis of the Nordics, has been Åland’s capital and only town since 1861. The town celebrated its 160th anniversary in February 2021. Mariehamn has a charming town centre with an abundance of shops, cafés and restaurants. There is also free city-wide WiFi called “City Mariehamn”. GO SHOPPING! In Mariehamn you can find shops for all tastes. You can easily find the everyday and party vacation outfits for the whole family in the fashion stores and shoe shops. Sports, hunting and outdoor enthusiasts can also find the right gear in Mariehamn.
There is also everything from fabrics and furnishings to kitchenware and utensils. The shops offer a good mix of Ålandic, Finnish and other Nordic designs. Make-up, skincare and other beauty products, as well as flowers, books, jewellery, watches and gifts are available. There is also the Finnish state monopoly liquor store Alko, two pharmacies as well as vintage and second hand stores in the town centre. The majority of the shops are located along the pedestrian street Torggatan, as well as Norragatan and in Sittkoff Gallerian and Torggallerian. After shopping, you can sit down at one of the cosy cafés and restaurants to enjoy good food and drink. Restaurants and cafés serve food with local Åland ingredients, and there is always takeaway for a picnic on the green.

In the Sittkoffs underground parking garage and next to the library, parking is limited to three hours. A parking disc is compulsory! CARAVAN OR A MOBILE HOME If you are travelling with a caravan or a mobile home, we recommend Gröna Udden campsite. The campsite is only a couple of kilometres south of the centre and offers excellent service and a lovely sandy beach. THE TOWN OF A THOUSAND LINDEN TREES Mariehamn is called ”the town of a thousand linden trees” because of the linden tree Esplanade between the Eastern and Western harbours. The town is also often called a maritime town, because of the proud maritime heritage and the importance of the shipping in the local economy. The well-being of the environment is important for an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The municipality is certified in environmental management according to the international standard ISO 14001.
THE PULSE OF THE TOWN CENTRE! The centre of Mariehamn is filled with various events and activities all year round. Enjoy live music, performances, familyfriendly activities and much more. See you in the City! Read more at citymariehamn.ax

MARIEHAMN
A walking-friendly town Being close to everything is one of the advantages of a small town. Mariehamn is easy to discover on foot. The distance between the city’s two harbours is just over one kilometre, and the streets are paved with interesting history. Mariehamn offers many exciting encounters between new and old worlds. Today the western harbour is the port for modern ferries and cruise ships, but here you can also see the tall ship Pommern, which was built in 1903 and is the only four-masted sailing ship in the world in its original condition. Combine a visit to the Pommern with the Maritime Museum for a deeper dive into Åland’s impressive maritime history. Or, walk along the path up to Badhusberget Hill to get a bird’s eye view of Mariehamn. Every afternoon around 2 p.m. you can see several ferries on the fairway to the port of Mariehamn. In the western harbour you can find ÅSS Paviljongen and other buildings from the town’s spa resort era in the early 20th century. Then follow the Esplanade towards the
town centre. The Esplanade linden alley dates back to the original town plan from 1859. At St. Göran’s Church from 1927 you can stop and admire the murals and window paintings. The church, as well as the buildings of the Åland Navigation Institute and the Town Hall are designed by architect Lars Sonck. Another style of architecture can be found along Södragatan, one of the oldest streets in town with fin-de-siècle wooden houses designed by Hilda Hongell, Finland’s first female Master Builder. SUNBATHING AND SWIMMING Mariehamn’s eastern seaside attracts with restaurants and shopping around the Torggatan pedestrian street. You can also visit the Cultural History Museum of Åland and Åland Art Museum, or enjoy of a dip in the sea by Lilla Holmen’s sandy beach where there is also a jetty, kiddie’s pirate ship and peacocks. The Maritime Quarter and Mariebad swimming centre are also favourites for all the family.

LIBRARY STORIES The beautiful municipal library of Mariehamn is wellstocked. Apart from borrowing books, you can find a wide range of daily papers and magazines. There is a generous section for kids, and a special Alandica collection with books written in and about Åland. The library arranges arts exhibitions as well as music and theatre performances, especially for children. Visit the library at Strandgatan 29.
EDUCATIONAL WETLAND At the very end of the sea bay of Slemmern at Nabben, on the eastern side of Mariehamn, there is a newly constructed wetland open for visitors. The purpose of the wetland is to purify rainwater that flows into the bay and protect biological diversity. Meadow flowers have been sown on the banks to attract butterflies and bumblebees. There are also nesting boxes for birds and the wetland has been stocked with pike fry. The area is accessible with trails and ramps and there are benches to sit down. Information boards highlight notable flora and fauna in the area.
MARIEHAMN IN A MUSEUM Would you like to see what Mariehamn looked like a century ago? Mariehamnsmuseet is a small museum displaying a miniature model of the town in the 1920s. The houses have been built according to original drawings and with small details, such as cats and chimney sweepers on roofs. The museum at Ålandsvägen 42 is open until 15 August. More information at www.mariehamn.ax/ kultur-bibliotek/museer/modellstaden

Beach volleyball, swimming centre and skate park Anyone in the family who likes to skateboard? The skatepark is located next to the library and is free to use. The skate park with various ramps was opened in Mariehamn a couple of years ago. It is centrally located below the library and next to Alandica Culture and Congress Hall. The park is free to use for everyone and here you can meet like-minded skaters! BEACH VOLLEY AND SWIMMING CENTRE If you like beach volleyball, Mariehamn is the place for you. There is one court on Nabben beach, one on Lilla Holmen and three courts on the beach next to Mariebad swimming centre.
Mariebad is the swimming centre for all the family! Here you can swim in a regular eight-lane pool, or you can relax and enjoy the adventure pool with a water slide, massage jets, jacuzzi and a small heated outdoor pool, and a kiddie pool for the youngest ones. Massage and wellness treatments can be booked upstairs. BATHING BEACHES Mariebad has a sandy beach next door. There are three bathing beaches in town at Nabben, Lilla Holmen and by the campsite of Gröna Udden. All of these are child-friendly, Nabben being the shallowest one.
PLAYGROUNDS Mariehamn has many playgrounds with swings, slides and climbing frames. Playgrounds are located at the town square, next to Alandica Culture House, and on Lilla Holmen. There is also a playground next to the Swedish Consulate, near ÅSS marina. 100 – www.aland.com
MARIEHAMN
DISC GOLF AT BADHUSPARKEN Badhusparken has a beautiful location on a hill above the Western harbour. The view over the sailing ship Pommern and ÅSS visitors’ marina is great. The 9-hole disc golf course is set amidst tall pine trees and lower crooked pines growing on the rocks. Discs can be bought at a local sports shop or you can rent them in a nearby ice cream kiosk or at Åland tourist information office at Storagatan.
EXERCISE OUTDOORS! Next to Idrottsparken in Mariehamn there is a short jogging track with varying terrain. There is an outdoor gym for everyone to use 24/7. Baltichallen in southern Mariehamn also has a jogging track of a couple of kilometres and an outdoor gym.
SPORTS AT BALTIC ARENA Mariehamn boasts with several excellent sports facilities, for example the Islandia ice hall and the bowling hall at Idrottsgården, among others. There are also several football pitches with grass and artificial turf. The newest of the facilities is Baltic Friidrottsarena in southern Mariehamn. The Arena celebrates its first season by hosting the SFI championships in athletics on 19-21 August. Baltic Arena is a complete athletics facility with an 8-lane track and with adjacent facilities for jumping and throwing events. There is also a time taking system, a small stand, and dressing rooms in the Baltichallen sports hall. www.aland.com – 101
VINTAGE AND SECOND HAND Shopping sustainably is really anything but boring. Remember to take a small dose of patience and go for an exciting treasure hunt where the reward is to find unique objects. Or make it easy for yourself and visit Patina at Norragatan 1, where the entire store is filled with antique, vintage and retro style items. More nice and useful things can be found at Emmaus Åland second-hand shops in Mariehamn, Norrböle and Godby. 102 – www.aland.com
HANDICRAFT
Discover 20 years of creativity Women dominate Åland’s arts and crafts scene. One example, located in the Maritime Quarter, is SALT, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an exhibition at the Eckerö Post & Customs House. Current and past members of the crafts house SALT are participating in the jubilee exhibition ”Starkt, SALT, skarpt”. Nine strong and creative artisans, all women, show what 20 years of arts and crafts can look like. The result is a fantastic exhibition with strong and elegant design language. Some of the works are old, some re-made and some are new. Most of the works are handcrafted textiles with everything from needlework, weaving and knitting to felting and textile printing by artisans Ann Eriksson, Ilse Berg and Gunilla von Nandelstadh, among others. There are also ceramics by Siv Linney and metal crafts of recycled materials by
the goldsmith Titti Sundblom. All colours, patterns and soft textiles present a wonderful contrast for another exhibition at the Post and Customs House this summer. The exhibition ”Metal” displays precious and base metals, and thus the two exhibitions are perfect complements to each other’s strong artisanal crafts. HANDCRAFTED MEMENTOES If you are looking for beautiful and useful souvenirs, choose local crafts! Handmade mementoes to take back home can be found at SALT and Guldviva jewellery shop in the Maritime Quarter of Mariehamn. Another nice excursion destination is Stickstugan Hantverk & Café in Järsö. Lotta Gustafsson welcomes you with her charming mix of ceramics, textiles, homebaked cakes and beautiful garden.

Creative ideas in a ceramics studio In Mia Englund’s studio in Smakbyn you can buy her design ceramics or try to make your own pottery. For the ceramicist Mia Englund, clay is a fantastic natural material, offering endless possibilities, but also some impossibilities. Little like life in general. In her workshop in Smakbyn in Kastelholm, she turns, rolls and forms interior details and utensils in clay. She works as environmentally friendly as possible and is happy to mix her own glazes to be sure what they contain. The production is small-scaled with a focus on form, function and simplicity. Mia gets her inspiration from nature and everyday life back home, and often from something that is thought-provoking or touching. Like her heart-shaped mug called “With the hand on the heart” that fits perfectly in the hand. If you are curious about ceramics, you
can book Mia’s ceramics course or a shorter session. After your visit to Mia’s workshop, you can enjoy good food or have a coffee at Smakbyn’s restaurant. MORE POTTERY During the 1980s, ceramics and pottery gained in popularity thanks to many ceramists who had moved to Åland. Some of them are still active and welcome visitors to their studios. “It feels good to be a part of people’s everyday lives” says potter Judy Kuitunen about her functional ceramics and utensils. You will find her ceramics and art in the beautiful old slaughterhouse in Gölby. In Hammarland countryside, Siv and Simon Linney at Lugnet Keramik welcome visitors to their ceramics studio.

MARIEHAMN
Högskolan på Åland Östra
KO GA RPO LTB /K O Y Vålö
JOMAL A

Our campsite is located by the sea and within a walking distance from the centre of Mariehamn. Park your motorhome, pitch your tent on the campsite or treat yourself to a comfortable night in our cosy overnight cabins. The seaside area is beautiful with a beach sauna and child-friendly sandy beach for sunbathing and swimming. You can also play mini golf or rent a bicycle for your own day trips. Do you want to enjoy a little extra of the holiday life? We recommend a visit to our café, this year with a new pizza kitchen, summer bar and glazed terrace. Enjoy ice cream and fresh summer meals, we have lots of treats on the menu.
