In the footsteps of the Ålanders, from the Stone Age to today
Modern day Åland is informed by history and the position of the islands in the Baltic Sea. We live in a society that is enriched by influences from both the west and east. During the time of Swedish rule, from King Gustav Vasa in the 16th century to the end of the Finnish War in 1809, Åland was the geographical centre point of the Swedish realm. This was followed by Russian rule, which lasted until Finland declared its independence in December of 1917. During the period of autonomy, Åland eventually became a demilitarised and autonomous part of Finland. In Åland’s cultural history, there are many memories and interesting narratives to be shared.
