100 years of autonomy

Unique to Åland Since 1954, Åland has had its own flag, which is a red and yellow cross on a field of blue. Åland’s flag day is celebrated on the last Sunday in April. Åland has its own postal service, Åland Post, which also issues its own stamps. The first stamps were issued on 1 March 1984, and each year approximately 16 new stamp designs are issued. Ålanders seen driving out in the world are easy to spot, as Åland issues its own vehicle licence plates. Keep an eye out for ÅL.

Åland is the oldest autonomous region in Europe as well as the smallest. Åland was granted autonomous status in 1921 on the basis of a decision made by the League of Nations in Geneva. A strong movement in Åland had pushed for reunion with Sweden, but Finland did not want to let the island realm go. The decision made in Geneva was a compromise. Ålands first 30-member parliament (today known as the Parliament of Åland) convened for the first time on 9 June 1922, which is celebrated as Åland’s Autonomy Day. The Parliament of Åland passes its own legislation within a number of different areas, including the economy, education, transportation and health care. The Government of Åland, its regional administration offices and the Parliament of Åland are housed in the Åland Government Building, which is located adjacent to the Mariehamn town square. The idea of “willfulness” has been the lodestar for Ålanders throughout the entire existence of their autonomy, and will continue to be for at least the next 100 years.

Time and currency Åland’s currency is the euro and both Åland and Finland are in the Eastern European time zone. When it is 12 noon in Sweden, it is 1:00pm in Åland.

Visit Åland Population What a delightful development – more and more people want to live in Åland! Over the past few years, Åland’s population has increased by 200-300 people, and we have also passed the 30,000 mark! Nearly 12,000 people live in Mariehamn, Åland’s largest city. The official language in Åland is Swedish. In addition to the 26,000 Ålanders who have Swedish as their native language, there are 72 different languages spoken in Åland.

Åland - Islands of peace Åland has no military and no active military bases. Ålanders are exempt from military conscription in the Finnish Defence Forces.

For those who want a taste of Åland The concept of “axgan” means you only consume products and produce made in Åland while you are in Åland. Thanks to the many small scale producers and wide range of products, you can enjoy everything from fruits, green vegetables, meats and fish to sea buckthorn, honey and freshly roasted coffee. apple tree, thus taking the self-pick concept to a whole new level. ÅLAND IS CURRENTLY FINLAND’S LARGEST APPLE ORCHARD - as many as three out of every four apples is grown in

Åland. In addition to this, 30% of all domestic onions and 90% of all asparagus come from Åland. The perfect conditions for organic farming means top class produce. And that’s not all the “superberry” sea buckthorn grows along Åland’s coastline. To put it another way, it’s easy to fill your glass and plate with local foods and drinks. Many farms grow their own produce. Milk is made into cheese, meat is made into delicious sausages and organically grown cereals are ground into flour.

SOME FOOD PRODUCERS WELCOME VISITORS to their farm shops or offer guided tours, while others sell their products in supermarkets or handicrafts shops. Keep an eye out for Odlarringen cooperative of organic farmers. Local organic products also include a wide range of flour and groats from Överäng’s mill. DAHLMANS’ RECIPE FOR SUCCESS IS KNOWLEDGE, QUALITY AND GOOD FOOD This year, the family business W.J. Dahlman celebrates 100 years of commitment to Åland food craft. The recipe for success includes fresh ingredients, a great love for the art of cooking and a sense of quality. YOU ARE GUARANTEED to find at least one Dahlmans

Lamb grill with flavourful seasoning and a lot of character from ingredients such as ginger, nutmeg, chili, coriander, cloves and garlic.

product on the shelves of every refrigerator in Åland. From smoked ham for breakfast sandwiches to the weekend charcuterie board, every day becomes a party with Dahlmans’ delicious hamburgers or high-quality meat products, such as grilled entrecôte or perfectly seared tenderloin or butcher’s steak.

IT IS EVIDENT THAT THE COMPANY began its history in

1924 as a sausage maker. Dahlmans wieners are a real classic! They are an everyday-dinner’s best friend and are just as good boiled as fried or in a stroganoff. In addition, the sausages are great for grilling outdoors. Cold cuts called lördagskorv or “Saturday sausage” and jaktkorv or “hunting sausage” are mild and enjoyable. If you want more heat, you can try Hardcore Chili or Krakova on the grill or as a flavour enhancer in various stews. The Skeppargrill or “Skipper’s sausage” and Lammgrill, a lamb sausage, are flavourful, but not too strong, and pair well with oven-roasted root vegetables during harvest times.

IN ORDER TO SECURE the supply of raw materials and to have full control over the quality, Dahlmans opened an abattoir in 1943, now the only one in Åland. Even today, Dahlmans works with Åland meat production of the highest class, which is guaranteed to be antibiotic-free and mostly involves freerange and natural grazing animals. More than 70 percent of the lamb meat is also organic; there is not a single farm in Åland that is classified as an industrial large-scale farm. Food that tastes good is something you want to eat again and again until it becomes tradition. That’s why it’s not Christmas without Christmas ham, rullsylta (rolled jellied meat), prinskorvar (cocktail wieners) and salami from Dahlmans.

ÅLAND ISLANDS ART MUSEUM ADDS COLOUR TO LIFE During the summer of 2024, the Åland Islands Art Museum will host a colourful and captivating exhibition. You’ll get to meet two artists who will challenge your senses and intrigue you with the conflict between the two- and three-dimensional. ARTSTS HC BERG AND SATU KILJUNEN as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki all have something in common: Åland. Kiljunen was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts during the same period that HC Berg studied there – and while Berg has roots in Åland, Satu Kiljunen lives on Kökar in the Åland archipelago. This summer, both meet in an exhibition at the Åland Islands Art Museum.

THIS SUMMER’S EXHIBITION FILLS the entire art museum

with colourful and fascinating optical illusions. The works are large-scale in both colour and shape and offer a meeting between sculptures and paintings. These are two artists who are not afraid to be bold, and they complement and challenge each other.

THE ÅLAND ISLANDS ART MUSEUM PRESENTS Åland art

from a broad perspective, from paintings and sculptures to installations. The exhibitions of the art museum’s collection vary throughout the year with themes that are often surprising in both breadth and unexpected combinations. In addition, the museum hosts special exhibitions that continuously offer visitors new art impressions and influences. It is clear that the art museum actively follows the development of contemporary art and works to act as a forum for both artists and the art public.

Plenty of exciting history in a small area Discover the well-preserved ruins of a medieval castle, a prison museum with chilling stories, and how a farm in Åland looked in the past. What is thought to be Åland’s oldest wooden house can also be found here; an unassuming shed built of logs dating back to the 17th century. Since most wooden buildings were burned down during the Great Wrath, there are hardly any wooden houses in Åland that are older than the 18th century.

KASTELHOLM CASTLE HAD ITS HEYDAY during the Vasa era

in the 16th century when Åland was a castle province of Sweden, and Gustav Vasa and his sons ruled. A visit to the castle ruins today offers a wide selection of Åland’s history with many contrasts. For several hundred years, the castle was Åland’s administrative centre, and both royalty and other fine folk passed through. Celebrations included fantastic feasts, where fine game meat and hundreds of litres of beer were enjoyed. On the other hand, the women accused of witchcraft in Finland’s largest witch trial were imprisoned in the castle. The stories come to life through the castle’s museum hosts and guides, who bring memories to life in the historical surroundings.

THE VITA BJÖRN PRISON MUSEUM shows how the view of punishment, and the daily life of prisoners, has changed over time. From the whipping post in the yard, where the other prisoners got to see the one who was whipped, to something more like today’s prison care.

AT THE JAN KARLSGÅRDEN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM, you can

KASTELHOLMSOMRÅDET

learn more about everyday life in the past. People lived in harmony with nature, animals and the sea. The houses were built by the farmers themselves. Furniture and other objects were also produced on the farms, such as cheese moulds with beautiful wood carvings or chairs with elegant armrests.

A FASCINATING PORTAL TO THE BOMARSUND ERA This year marks 170 years since the fortress in Bomarsund fell during the Crimean War. By visiting the fortress ruins and the Bomarsund Visitors Centre, you can immerse yourself in the area’s interesting history.

THE STORY OF BOMARSUND actually begins when Sweden lost Åland and Finland to Russia after the war of 1808–1809. Since Åland became the Russian Empire’s outermost outpost to the west, Russia began the construction of an impressive coastal fortress in Bomarsund in 1830. However, the fortress was never completed before it was destroyed by French and English forces during the Crimean War in 1854 after only three and a half days of fighting. To draw attention to the fact that 170 years have passed since the event, this year Bomarsund Visitors Centre will highlight the area’s role as a cultural meeting place. On nearby Prästö, there are burial grounds from several denominations that bear witness to many cultural encounters. There will also be a focus on food and drink from a multicultural perspective. AT THE VISITORS’ CENTRE YOU CAN EXPERIENCE

Bomarsund’s rise and fall with the help of films and selected objects. Before you wander further among the ruins in the area, you will also learn about the area’s participation in the grand political game surrounding the Crimean War. Of course, it is fine to visit the Bomarsund area even without seeing the exhibition, but taking part in the sequence of events before seeing the remains with your own eyes really deepens the experience. The visitors’ centre is open from May to September, and the ruins can be visited all year round. There are two hiking trails here, one in Bomarsund and one on Prästö, as well as nice views at the tower ruins on Djävulsberget and at Notvikstornet. ECKERÖ POST AND CUSTOMS HOUSE is also honouring the 170th anniversary by exhibiting Bomarsund lithographs from the Bank of Åland’s collection together with seven chosen artisans who interpret Bomarsund using different materials and techniques.

Åland Maritime Museum – a world-class museum The Maritime Museum’s unique collections are an incredible experience. If you combine them with the interactive visitor experience on board the tall ship Pommern, the visit will be unforgettable!

THE ÅLAND MARITIME MUSEUM is about experi-

encing and discovering. The museum is filled with lots of story treasures and personal destinies. In the centre stands the mighty and ever-present sea, that which attracts and pulls, and that which takes. Best of all are the environments that take you on board and show glimpses of life at sea through the ages. For example, you can hoist sails on a sailing ship, see what the sailor packed in their sailor’s chest or enjoy the splendour of the captain’s salon on the Herzogin Cecilie.

THE MUSEUM’S UNIQUE OBJECTS include a genu-

ine pirate flag, one of only two preserved in the entire world. The classic flag with a skull and crossbones truly sparks the imagination. What all has it seen? If you’re lucky enough to be there at the right time in the summer, you’ll be fascinated when the Maritime Museum’s passionate machinists start the gigantic triple-expansion steam engine inside the museum.

The Maritime Museum and Pommern are best experienced together, but the experience is just as great even if you only have time for one. The ticket includes admission to both, and if you can, visit one museum per day.

Begin on the weather deck where you walk around with an audio guide and eavesdrop on the crew. It’s especially fun for children and adults to go together. While adults listen to their audio guide, children can have the same adventure with the ship’s rat, Ruby. Ruby and the sounds of departure are so realistic that many little listeners have been convinced that the ship is actually about to leave the dock. Below deck, you can experience the journey in two new ways. First, you can test and try out things yourself, and then a powerful weather experience awaits you in the form of a sound and light show in the cargo hold.

The museum visit becomes even more enjoyable when the whole family is having a good time. At the Maritime Museum, you can discover and learn together, and even try things out in practice. For example, can you distribute the cargo on a cargo ship without it tipping over? Treasure hunting with the museum’s mascot, the ship’s rat, Ruby, and the imaginative playroom “Ruby and the Sea” are also among the highlights. In spring 2024, the museum will open its new special exhibition “What does a sailor do without a ship?” This exhibition is about Captain and model builder Runar Husell, who built an incredible model of the four-masted barque Ponape from memory while he was a prisoner of war during World War II. THEN TAKE THE FOOTBRIDGE over to the Pommern, the four-masted steel barque launched in Glasgow in 1903, which has sailed the wheat routes between Mariehamn and Australia. From May to September, you can come aboard and join a fictional 100-day voyage around the world. The exhibition brings to life everything you’ve discovered in the Maritime Museum’s collections, allowing you to feel and experience life on the Pommern with all your senses.

A LOVELY FOLK FESTIVAL WITH ITS HEART IN THE RIGHT PLACE Joyous festivities with a maritime atmosphere are in store when The Tall Ships Races visit Mariehamn 24–27 July. Enjoy the mighty sailing ships, exciting gatherings and an unbeatable party atmosphere in the city. formances. In the evening, the pulse and party atmosphere increases with music and entertainment on Badhusparken’s main stage. The event area is free for all visitors and extends along the shoreline promenade in the harbour. Here you can stroll around and look at the ships and mingle with the crews, which make up almost 2,000 people. Look out for signs saying “Open Ship” – this means you are welcome on board as a visitor. Also worth seeing is the “Crew Parade” on Thursday 25 July, when the ships’ crews parade from the western harbour, through central Mariehamn to the market square.

THE TALL SHIPS RACES are an annual international ocean

racing event. It has been organised by Sail Training International since 1956. The main purpose of the regatta is to give young people with different national, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds a sailing adventure with the opportunity for personal development, cooperation and many new friendships. Every four years the Tall Ships Races are arranged in the Baltic Sea, and this summer it is Mariehamn’s turn to welcome sailing ships of various sizes from the 1980s to the city’s western harbour, including the stately Fryderyk Chopin and Grand Duchess Elisabeth. The ships will have made a “cruise-in-company” friendly sail from Turku to Mariehamn and will arrive at the western harbour on the morning of Wednesday 24 July. The ships will stay in Mariehamn until Saturday 27 July, when it is time to start the competitive sailing towards Szczecin in Poland.

FEEL FREE TO WAVE THE SHIPS OFF when they leave Marie-

hamn. Good vantage points are, for example, the water tower on Badhusberget, the Korrvik fishing harbour and out on the island of Kobba Klintar. You can also follow the ships in your own boat. The crews and visitors will then take all the memories of a fantastic experience home with them to treasure.

DURING THE TALL SHIPS RACES IN MARIEHAMN, you can

look forward to a happy and lively folk festival in the city, filled with programme and fun for everyone. There will be food and drink, live music and entertainment, a market, and activities for both children and adults. In the Esplanade and Badhusparken, market stalls and food trucks fill the area, and beside the Åland Maritime Museum in the English Park you will find the stage for the day’s per-

TRADITIONS AND LOOKING BACK ON EARLIER DAYS IN THE ÅLAND ARCHIPELAGO Åland’s Hunting and Fishing Museum in the charming fishing village of Käringsund looks like a collection of boathouses. Inside, you’ll learn about animals, nature and Åland’s hunting and fishing culture – everything from seal hunting to the children’s herring market.

THIS YEAR THE MUSEUM WELCOMES its visitors to three

new exhibitions. The humorous and fun family favourite “Ooh, poo!” is a temporary exhibition about various animal faeces, and another temporary exhibition “Kultändare” features photographs by artist Kenneth Bamberg. A “kultändare”, or hot-bulb engine, is a cultural treasure that was once used in snipes and other boats, but also to drive threshing machines and tractors. Many people associate hot-bulb engines with the most wonderful engine sound. In the museum, Bamberg’s photographs are placed on objects from existing exhibitions, and when the worlds of art and cultural heritage come together, the exhibition takes on another dimension.

THE HUNTING AND FISHING MUSEUM’S PERMANENT EXHIBITION has been expanded with a new exhibition

about seal hunting. Join us on a journey through history, from the first people who came to Åland to hunt seals to today’s hunting practices. With the help of both multimedia and AI technology, the museum has created an exhibition that provides a deeper understanding of the subject. Black and white images have been coloured to give a more vivid picture of what life was like 100 years ago. You will also learn more about fishing, spring bird hunting, different types of boats, weapons and trophies. There is a lot to discover here! Go on trivia quests, play games, check out the museum shop and try the pearl excavation. BY FOLLOWING THE GEO PATH outside the museum, you

will learn the geological history of Åland. Children like to climb around on the salmon boat Svanö.

A POWERFUL AND GRIPPING FATE IN MUSICAL THEATRE The Katrina Cultural Association celebrates 25 years of work in developing Åland’s music scene with a new staging of the musical theatre production Katrina from 1997. Starring award-winning mezzo-soprano Erica Back.

THE PRODUCTION BRINGS TO LIFE Sally Salminen’s novel Katrina, an important part of Åland’s cultural heritage. The book spread widely internationally when it was published in 1936 and is now part of Finland’s literary canon. Sally Salminen (1906–1976) was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times during her lifetime.

Mezzo-soprano Erica Back, like Katrina, is from Ostrobothnia.

IN THE SUMMER OF 2024, composer Jack Mattsson’s (1954–

2007) beloved music and linguist Lars Huldén’s (1926–2016) lyrics will be given new life in Katrina – a musical theatre. In order to engage a new and younger audience, the work is being performed with a new script written by the director Ida Kronholm in collaboration with the poet and writer Carina Karlsson, both from Åland. At the same time, the Katrina Cultural Association, which 25 years ago borrowed its name from Salminen’s novel, is drawing attention to the fact that it has been 70 years since Jack Mattsson was born.

PHOTO: Robert Jansson Ålandstidningen

THE NOVEL IS ABOUT KATRINA, a farmer’s daughter from Ostrobothnia who meets Ålander Johan, gets married and moves to Åland. Here, the harsh archipelago life is not quite what Johan had promised. Through Katrina’s eyes, we get to see everyday life among the poor and rich around the turn of the last century. From the moment the curtain rises until it falls after the final act, Katrina is on stage. In Erica Back’s portrayal, you get to meet a hard-working woman and mother who does not shy away from challenging the village’s strong man. Through her unwavering sense of duty and justice, she eventually earns respect while reconciling with her fate. Among other soloists in the ensemble, we find baritone Leonarde Brändström in the role of Johan and bass-baritone Philip Björkqvist as Captain Nordqvist.

KATRINA – A MUSICAL THEATRE PRODUCTION 17–20 July -24 at Alandica Culture and Congress Centre, Strandgatan 33, Mariehamn. Ticket booking via www.alandica.ax, learn more at www.katrina.ax The ensemble includes a choir of 25 people and an orchestra of 36 people. The performance lasts 2.5 hours, including an intermission.

Lovely quiet days at the beach hotel At Grelsby Strand Hotell, a grand stone building from the 1930s has been converted into charming accommodation that is praised for its comfortable beds and good Åland breakfast.

At the beach there is also a “wilderness bath” and a floating sauna with an incredible view of the water. It’s great to have both a sauna and a swimming pier when it’s winter swimming season! In the lush surroundings there is a generous lawn that truly invites you to play. For those seeking more variety during their break, there is also a football pitch, paintball range and a chipping range.

THE HOTEL’S LOCATION IN THE MIDDLE OF ÅLAND is per-

fect for various excursions. If you’re looking for nice greens and smoothly rolling balls, you can book a round of golf at Eckerö Golf. This golf course caters to players of all levels with four tee options on the club’s 18-hole course, providing everyone a chance to play the holes according to their handicap. The first nine holes of the course are a bit easier, while the last nine are longer and more challenging. Beside the golf course, there is a driving range and a practice area with putting and chipping greens.

GRELSBY STRAND’S RESTAURANT is only available for reservations by groups. Otherwise, the hotel recommends a visit to Johannas Hembakta, which has a stone oven bakery and café in the same building. Here you will find sandwiches and the best coffee-time treats. Another option is the Stallhagen beer brewery, which is in walking distance and has a popular gastropub. LIGHTHOUSES. On days when the weather is nice, a trip

to one of Åland’s lighthouses is idyllic, almost magical. The lighthouse rises out of the sea and the horizon is endless. The remote islands offer powerful natural experiences and interesting stories. Go on a lighthouse safari – start with Lågskär lighthouse in the south, then Märket in the west, and finish with Sälskär lighthouse in the north.

RÖDHAMN is one of Åland’s popular guest harbours. With

warm hospitality and located on the edge of the Sea of Åland, you land in a safe haven protected from all winds. Rödhamn is well-known for its welcoming accommodation. On the island, a dip in the sea, a nice sauna and delicious buns await. There is also a museum and Café Sjöboden. Rödhamn was chosen as Finland’s guest harbour of the year in 2023.

KOBBA KLINTAR. The old pilot station and museum at the

entrance to Mariehamn is easy to visit both with and without your own boat. When the flag is raised, the cafe is open. Exhibitions are arranged in “båken”, or the beacon, and humorous works of art by Juha Pykäläinen appear here and there. From seagulls with swimming goggles to the seal in the harbour pool.

KÄLLSKÄR. In Åland’s southernmost municipality Kökar, the island of Källskär attracts visitors with its interesting glacial formations and unexpected environments created by the Swedish baron Göran Åkerhielm in the 1960s. On a barren island out in the ocean, a Mediterranean garden meets Finnish-Nordic-style buildings. There are guided tours during the high season from Hotell Brudhäll.

STORMSKERRY MAJA. Once again, author Anni Blom-

OUR BEST TIPS FOR PLEASANT AND SAFE CYCLING Cyclists enjoy Åland’s winding roads, and there are cycling tours available in all directions, sometimes following bike paths and other times along meandering village roads.

CYCLING HOLIDAYS IN ÅLAND are popular among both

Cycling is simple, inexpensive, and gives you plenty of fresh air. At the same time, you get to experience Åland at a comfortable pace.

recreational and road cyclists, who call Åland the nordic Mallorca, only better! This is thanks to light traffic combined with excellent roads and beautiful scenery. In total, there are 1,100 kilometres of public roads and over 150 kilometres of bike paths, perfect for cycling at any pace.

FOR A SAFE AND PLEASANT BIKE RIDE, consider the following! A bicycle is a vehicle, meaning the same rules apply to cyclists as to car drivers. For cyclists, this means righthand traffic on both roads and bike paths. Always look in both directions at intersections and never drive straight into the intersection. As always in traffic, be careful, consider the circumstances, and be attentive in all situations. Interaction with other road users is important; remember to signal well in advance! Also, check that you can turn without risk, remember to look behind you before turning. It’s safest to ride single file. Bicycles with more than two wheels may not travel side by side. DON’T FORGET A BIKE HELMET and preferably use a re-

flective vest. A safe bicycle should also be equipped with a bell, functional brakes, a white reflector in front, a red reflector in the back, two orange spoke reflectors, preferably a chain guard, and front and rear lights. Familiarise yourself with all road signs that are important to know before you cycle.

In addition, it is always close to the sea and nature. The short distances mean that you avoid commuting and traffic queues, which in turn gives you more leisure time to invest in your own interests and relationships.

THE ÅLAND HEALTHCARE SERVICES (ÅHS) are responsible for public healthcare in Åland and often seek new employees for health centres and hospitals, including doctors, nursing staff, dentists and paramedics as well as other specialised and service staff. With 1,000 employees, ÅHS is one of the largest employers in Åland. Compared to larger hospitals, the organisation is still small, which makes operations smoother and decision-making paths shorter. especially if you are looking for a meaningful career in a nice environment. The short decision-making processes, the opportunity for great personal responsibility and the family atmosphere also make Åland’s healthcare services an attractive workplace. WORKING AT ÅHS provides the opportunity for a calmer and more balanced everyday life. Compared to working times in Sweden, the days are shorter, usually from 8 am to 3:45 pm. The atmosphere in the workplace is one of familiarity as ÅHS consists of many small clinics, and it is easy to get to know everyone quickly. ÅHS is also lauded for its good supervision and introduction of new employees. Cohesion quickly becomes strong when everyone works together as a team for the patients.
