About this brochure

Untouched landscape The Strait of Gullkrona is noble, even somewhat enigmatic in calm weather. When storms brew, a spellbinding spectacle unfolds before your eyes – these are quite dramatic later in the autumn. Every day of the year, she earns her name: Gullkrona – Golden Crown: most valuable. When you look out to sea from Högland’s observation tower, it is easy to image the sailing ships that sailed here a hundred years ago, the Swedish Navy before them, The Vikings before them ... They could sail past today, nothing on the horizon reveals the fact that we are now in a new millennium. A breath-taking insight hits you, apart from land-rise, the archipelago has remained unchanged since prehistoric times. The Archipelago Sea is a place on earth where humankind has never dominated.

The region’s tourism companies and their partners are all committed to the future conservation of the sea and the island communities. The strategy is based on values of small-scale business, quality visitor experience and respect for the environment. Cast off The most important thing is to leave the mainland behind, take one of the boats that leave from the Archipelago’s traffic hubs. Boat routes operate from Kustavi and Turku in the west to Hanko in the east. The map on the next page shows most of the Archipelago Sea’s scheduled routes. Of course, you can hire a taxi boat to travel outside of these areas.

Enjoy Typically, you will find accommodation, cafes and restaurants on most of the larger islands. A selection of them are presented here but you will find more at VisitArchipelago.com. Regardless of which route you choose, you will hopefully notice one thing; your troubles are left behind on the first jetty.

Come ashore Every island has its own atmosphere and unique sights. What are you looking for? Experiences in nature, war history, peace and quiet – you will find it all here. It is a delight that there are different routes serving the islands so that you can continue your journey deeper into the archipelago without returning to the same departure harbour. Plan well and you can make an unforgettable journey all the way from Hanko to the Åland Islands.

Pearls of the Archipelago Själö, Utö, Jurmo, Örö and Högsåra – all have their own special charm. Each in its own unique way. 1. Örö fortress island

Örö was closed to the public for over a hundred years. Now this coastal fortress is the archipelago’s most visited destination. An island with many faces The Örö history as a coastal fortress began during the 1808-1809 war when the island functioned as a Swedish naval base. During the Russian period Örö was part of the defensive line Örö – Russarö – Utö – Ösel. During independence, Örö has been an important part of the Finnish coastal defence. Old growth forests and sand and gravel beaches have a lot to offer outdoor and nature lovers. Bikes,

canoes, kayaks and SUP-boards can be hired. Rare coastal plants and over 250 rare or threatened butterfly species have been found on the island. Migrating birds pass Örö each spring and autumn. The diverse biotopes also attract rare birds during the summer. The island has a restaurant and a café in the harbour. Cottages, hotel rooms, a hostel and campsite are some of the alternatives for visitors wishing to stay the night. The marina has space for 70 boats.  www.VisitOro.fi Ferry from: Kasnäs

2. Högsåra

Högsåra has a rich heritage of maritime pilots and visits by Russian Tsars, mixed with a modern touch. The atmosphere is very chilled. Can there be a cooler name than Rumpan Bar (Bare bum bar)? • Farmors (Granny’s) Café is a classic, a must for many visitors. • Rumpan Bar at the Lillbacka Brygga marina. • Jungfrusund museum by the Kejsarhamnen marina gives insight into village history. • Accommodation: Guesthouse and Villa Cecilia. • Bike! 3. Jurmo

Jurmo is known for its fens, sand eskers and stony moorland. The island is one of the archipelago’s best birdwatching places during spring and autumn migration. • There are a few hiking trails on the island. Please note that the western part of the island is not accessible during the nesting period 1.4–31.7. • The harbour has a summer cafe and shop with a fish counter. • The island has cottages that can be rented per day. • No one has ever solved the riddle of the monk rings. The four circular stone formations are assumed to have been used for grazing or seasonal fishing. • The old windmill and chapel are popular sites to visit.  www.jurmo.com Ferry: Nagu (Pärnäs)

4. Utö

Utö’s barren landscape never stops to charm friends of the archipelago, birdwatchers and others who appreciate life far out at sea. • The island’s position has always been significant for maritime pilots and the military. Utö monitoring post closed in 2005, but the military still use two areas on the island. • Are you a bird watcher? You will find many other likeminded individuals on the island. • There are plenty of accommodation alternatives, from hotel rooms to cottages. A restaurant is open during the summer. The shop is open throughout the year. • MS Park Victory’s wreck is popular for divers. The ship sank in 1947 shipping coal from Virginia to Turku. Ten sailors drowned but 38 were saved. The wreck lies at a depth of 27–36 meters. The tops of the masts stand 8 meters underwater. Tea Karvinen

5. Själö/Seili

It is said that Själö’s (swedish: “island of souls”) name comes from seals, not souls, despite many damaged souls passing through the island over the years. Nowadays peace reigns over the houses and meadows. A dark past King Gustav II Adolf founded a leprosy hospice on Själö in 1619. A return from Själö was not an option for the patients. It was easy to dig graves in the sand esker. Mentally ill were housed in a separate hospital for ”paupers and the feeble-minded”. Själö hospital was the country’s largest mental

hospital after 1785. The institution started to house only women at the end of the 1800s. A brighter present The mental hospital closed at the beginning of the 1960s. Turku University’s Archipelago Research Institute is nowadays housed in the former hospital buildings. Guided tours about the island’s history, nature and present research activities are organised Själö has a restaurant and a café. The Archipelago Trail

THE ARCHIPELAGO SHORT TRAIL takes you through

the inner archipelago. Many stop off at Själö on the ferry between Nagu and Rymättylä. Please note that vehicles are not allowed on this beautiful island. The short sea voyage offers breezes of Airisto – a beautiful stretch of sea between Turku and Pargas that inspired the music for the Airisto Waltz.

Classic: 250 km Short Trail: 100 km Position: Archipelago Sea’s western side Route: see the map on last page The Archipelago Trail has attracted cyclists, bikers and motorists for over 20 years. Island hopping is the route’s specialty - it offers no less than nine ferries and a multitude of bridges. There are great restaurants and places to stay the night. Farm shops and kiosks have increased during the last few years providing delicious treats along the way. Signposting: The Archipelago Trail is marked with brown signs. What to see: Boat museum in Houtskär, Jungfrudansen troy town stone maze in Finby, Nagu, Kuusisto Bishop’s Castle Ruins, Kustavi handicraft village.

The Coastal Route Length: 200 km (35 km at sea) Position: Archipelago Sea’s eastern side Route: see the map on last page The Coastal Route is made for cyclists. The absolute highlights are the historical ironworks villages of Dalsbruk, Mathildedal och Kirjakkala, and the boat trip between Hanko and Kasnäs. Some departures travel via Bengtskär Lighthouse. The route passes through three national parks and small towns. The picturesque Ekenäs old town with its charming wooden houses and cafes is well worth a visit. There are great restaurants and places to stay the night as well as farm shops and kiosks. No bike? The Coastal Route is perfect to explore by motorbike or car, the passenger ferry does not transport vehicles. Signposting: the Coastal Route is marked with brown signs. What to see: boat trip over Hanko’s western bay, Bengtskär Lighthouse, historical ironworks villages, Ekenäs and Hanko. A kayaker's guide

The Archipelago Sea is one of the best places in the world for sea kayaking: calm bays, remote skerries where you feel like the only person on the planet, unexpected meetings with flora and fauna – there is always plenty to discover.

But where should you start? Below are some islands and areas that can open the door to a fascinating sea world. Good starting points are for example, Kasnäs, Nagu village or Pargas Port.

Hang out on Pike and his friends’ island expedition The Archipelago Sea’s cultural landscapes and diverse biotopes are so unique that they have received the UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserve status. The Archipelago Sea is actually the most species rich area in the whole of Finland. Visiting a harbour? Then hang out with Pike and his friends (Gäddan & gänget) on an island expedition and learn more about the archipelago’s natural and cultural landscapes. Complete fun challenges and collect stamps in your researcher’s pass! The expedition is a mini adventure for kids and curious adults spread over 15 harbours in the Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve. mation offices, the islands, or download it from  expedition.foss.fi. 2. Get going. Check the map to see if your harbour is included in the expedition. Around the archipelago table Pargas Local History Museum and the Sagalund museum in Kimito both have food as this year’s theme. What did people eat when there were few ingredients to choose from? How did people survive when the harvest failed? You will find the answers to this and more at the museums. Out in the museum cottages, different time periods and social classes are brought to life. Visitors can see how crofters’ meals and farmers’ feasts differed. Fishermens’ suppers, workers’ lunch boxes and wartime food substitutes are exhibited. You can learn how to make sausages, churn butter or make protto on short courses. What is protto? Well, you’ll just have to visit the museums to learn about and

taste this local food! Special programs for children are organised around dinner tables set with appropriate tableware. Asides from food there is plenty to discover in the museums’ exhibitions and collections. Museum Director Li Näse in Sagalund and curator Anne Bergström in the Local History Museum in Pargas give their personal favourites.

Sagalund museum ˜ Li’s five tips ˜

1. Tjuda pedagogy – The fantastic 1700s school environment comes to life when visitors meet their teacher, played by Jarmo Kujala. It feels more real than you might expect: a bust of Linné stares down at you at your school desk. This discipline is hard. Li tells that the experience usually wakes the anarchist in her – how will you react? – I should add that this school drama is aimed at adult visitors. The 1940s setting of Vreta School is more suitable for younger visitors. 2. The outdoor museum Sagalund museum’s green cultural heritage is present throughout the museum. Ask your guide for the free pamphlet “Sagalund’s green cultural heritage”. It is a guide to the crops and plants of Sagalund. The museum’s founder Nils Oskar Jansson was an admirer of Carl von Linné and his work in Taxonomy. Jansson was also interested in gardening for self-sufficiency. 3. Childrens’ culture centre – Prepare yourself for adventure! Customised programs, guided activities and games blow life into the museum. Time travel for children under school age, with themes like this party etiquette and folklore, are organised on Wednesdays in June and July. Teddy bear picnics for the youngest take place on Tuesdays in July. The centre is specialised on heritage interpretation and environmental education.

4. Falla farm – Groups work together on the farm. One group maybe churns butter and bakes, another brews coffee in an old-fashioned way. Clothing and objects from the museum’s collection are often used in order to create an authentic atmosphere. – A walk through Falla is like a time journey. The lounge and ceiling paintings are from the 1890s, the other rooms are decorated according to the 1940s, 50s and 60s. 5. The courthouse and surroundings from the 1700s reveal many exciting stories – Have you heard about the priest and the bailiff’s wife who had an affair, murdered their spouses and were subsequently sentenced to death by hanging? Or, the male body found under Brinkkulla croft when it was moved to Sagalund? asks Li. This section of the museum gives a peek into the world of folklore and superstition.  www.sagalund.fi

Pargas local history museum ˜ Anne’s five tips ˜ 1. Many museums tell the story of archipelago life – How have people lived in the archipelago, what did they do for a living? Learn about archipelago life by visiting the local history museum and the smaller museums. The smaller museums often have specific themes. 2. The geological exhibition in Pargas Industry Museum – Tells the story of limestone. You travel back in time, millions of years, to a landscape of high mountains and volcanoes. 3. Kirjala Norrgård at Pargas local history museum – The interior furnishings are exceptional and the pretty building depicts different epochs. Kirjala Norrgård has a room dedicated to Lenin – no less,

Historically, Finns added tree bark to their bread when there was a shortage of ordinary flour. Bark flour is made from the thin phloem layer that lies under the outer bark of pine trees.

4. Malmnäs cottage at Pargas local history museum – The cottage has recently received a pleasant interior from the 1940s. You will find the main part of the exhibition about food, ”Till bords i Åboland”, here. 5. Pargas local history museum – We have a beautiful, large, open, green area with toys and activities for children. Bring your own picnic hamper and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There is something special about visiting a church or chapel out in the archipelago. Weather beaten and sunburnt you step over the threshold. Before your eyes can adjust to the faint light, a true feeling of calm overcomes you. Most of the islands that have had a permanent population have either a church or chapel. Try it, step out of your holiday mood and treat yourself to a moment’s peace and reflection. A princess at the edge of the sea Iniö church was named after the newly born princess Sophia Wilhelmina in 1801.The church bells are still rung by hand. The Sabbath is rung in at sunset

and not at 6pm as with most churches. A chapel by a sandy beach The path from the marina to Vänö’s chapel meanders through fairytale moorland and lush deciduous forest. Continue further and you come to a sandy beach. The chapel is built entirely of wood. The anchor and anchor-chain in the churchyard come from Suomenlinna fortress.

St Olav Waterway

Among sparkling cold spring waters or fiery autumnal leaves, the archipelago is a wonderful place to explore on foot. You can embrace the quiet and explore landscapes shaped by wind and sea, farmers and fishermen. In the evening after a long hike, cosy hotels and BBs with tasty home cooked meals or casual fine dining restaurants often feature local seasonal produce. St Olav Waterway is Finland’s first long-distance pilgrim’s trail, a path that follows in the footsteps and boat wakes of medieval pilgrims. You don’t only explore the archipelago’s diverse nature but you are embarking on a historical journey where travellers and locals meet.

Travel slowly and take time to island hop by rowing boat, kayak or ferry. If the weather is bracing indulge yourself with a massage or yoga weekend or simply rent a candle-lit cottage with friends for a well-deserved retreat. The trail launches at Turku Cathedral on 24th of May 2019 when a rotating group will hike 1200km to Trondheim in Norway. The path is open from Easter 2019.

Bengtskär lighthouse ˜ The archipelago’s most southerly destination ˜

Bengtskär lighthouse is the highest in the Nordic countries. Looking to the south, you meet a vast expanse of sea. Up in the lighthouse the barren seascape can play on the visitor’s senses. Those braving the spiralling 252 steps to the top can sometimes falsely feel that the lighthouse is leaning. This is supposedly because the view of sea and sky is devoid of a point of reference. Many experience a feeling of space and freedom. Dramatic history Due to Bengtskär’s strategic position, it was only a question of time before a battle would play out here. It began on a foggy night in July 1941 when

three soviet patrol boats landed on the island, kicking off a merciless onslaught, which resulted in 32 dead, and 45 wounded Finnish soldiers. Casualties on the Soviet side are estimated to be at least 60 dead. Approximately 1500 soldiers from both sides were involved. A master lighthouse keeper, a mechanic and three lighthouse keepers with their families lived on the rocky island. The population was at its peak at the end of the 1930s when 32 adults and children lived here. The lighthouse was renovated to its former glory

by entrepreneurial couple Paula och Per Wilson. They have kept the lighthouse open for visitors ever since. Bengtskär has a lighthouse museum, cafe with souvenir shop and hotel and conference facilities for 24 people. You can reach the lighthouse during the summer by passenger boat. One route departs from Kasnäs, regular tours are also available from Örö, Rosala, Hanko and Turku.

A short way from Vietnam to Eternity in

Dalsbruk

What do Vietnam and Eternity have in common? One thing at least, they both lie in Dalsbruk, one is a housing estate built in the 70s, the other, a private house, a stone’s throw away. It perhaps does not need to be mentioned that the completion of “Eternity” was greatly delayed. The older houses and some parts of the village have festive names that are still commonly used today. These names do not come from official ceremonies but are rather names that have emerged where locals’ raw humour and reality meet. Try to imagine where “Hags desire”, “Starve-todeath” and Kakola (AKA a Finnish prison) came from or the housing estates Irak and Vietnam. This is

something to be pondered over in one of the street cafes or whilst meandering between slag-stone built charcoal ovens near the marina. You feel the influence of the ironworks wherever you wander in Dalsbruk. One of the prettiest details

is the slag-stone found in most of the buildings. Ironworks village beside the sea Smell of the sea or fairytale lake environments – the village’s location, sandwiched between the sea and two lakes gives plenty of opportunity for memorable excursions. A ferry will take you out to the archipelago from the harbour without charge. Passenger ferries operate to Bengtskär and Örö coastal fort amongst others. Art Bank is the home of exaggeration

Before we step inside Art Bank’s wondrous world, we should consider how surrealism’s founder André Breton defined the cultural movement:

“Pure psychic automatism, by which it is intended to express…the real process of thought. It is the dictation of thought, free from any control by the reason and of any aesthetic or moral preoccupation.” A direct line to the subconscious. Anything can happen here. A door to another dimension opens itself on the second floor of Köpmansgatan 23, where entrepreneur Ted Wallin houses his Salvador Dalí collection and his art gallery.

Ted guides us around the Dalí exhibition. Before we begin, he asks if he can retain the right to rewrite history. The stories are as tall as the gallery’s ceiling and perhaps a return visit will reveal a completely

different story. Who knows? The collection is comprised of three rooms of surrealistic paintings, sculptures and furniture pieces. The melting clocks are here, as is the elephant on tall slender legs. Much of the collection could be classified as furniture art. –An art critic once asked Dalí what the inspiration behind one of his pieces was. Dalí, taken aback, answered that he didn’t know, he had only painted it, explains Wallin. It is in this landscape of the fourth dimension that the guided tour continues, we look at a deformed clock. – What is reality? That which is visible? Or, can it be something else? For example, according to Dalí’s way of thinking death is not the end: we only leave our earthly bodies thinking, death and traverse to the fourth dimension. The clock reminds you of her running sisters, but its symbolism is tied to the fourth dimension, explains Wallin. Accordingly, Dalí continues to live. A direct link to a higher level is according to Wallin established by the Bakelite telephone on one of the side tables. Those who lift the receiver can ask questions and receive answers from the master himself. For those brave enough – or for those affluent

enough – to go the whole hog, you can hold a private Dalí-dinner for up to ten people in the gallery for 3 000 Euro. Everything is organised in the spirit of Dalí, with for example specially commissioned Dalí inspired cutlery and serviettes according to the customer’s wishes. The food is prepared according to Dalí’s cookbook and the sparkling wine served is the same as the one the artist served his own guests. Surrealistic, extravagant? The answer is Yes! The art gallery does not reflect the same cosmic layer, but still the art pieces here are of a high class. The emphasis is on contemporary art, both paintings and sculptures. In the gallery shop, you can find jewellery from jewellery designer Matti Hyvärinens, the designer of Dalí’s cutlery. The wineglasses draw one’s eye. – What about this? It is a disfunctional wineglass, which will hopefully be put into production soon. It would be perfect at the Dalí dinners as it would make it easier to get into a Dalí mood; he was apparently unconcerned about spilling a little wine here or there. Those who drink from this glass have the possibility of reaching the same level,laughs Wallin. All the objects in the Dalí collection are certified and numbered.

Nagu maritime museum gives an overview of how important Nagu was during the golden age of sailing from the mid-1800s until the appearance of steamboats. Most communities in the archipelago were active in the rapidly expanding shipping industry of the time. During the most intensive decade, Nagu had Finland’s largest fleet. A whole room in the museum is dedicated to the life of Åke Sandvall and his skilfully made miniature ships. Are you looking for a starting point for your adventure? You can rent kayaks and bikes in Nagu and join archipelago safaris and kayaking tours. The protected coast is suitable for both beginners and experienced paddlers.

Spring Spring in the archipelago is a momentous spectacle; ice melts, new life erupts from the ground and vast flocks of migrating birds replace winter’s silence. Some of the birdwatching hotspots are Utö, Örö and Björkboda’s fields on the Kimitoön island. A little later, when the sea ice has completely melted, eider duck safaris are organised to Bengtskär Lighthouse. Summer Lazy summer days on the beach, late dinners with friends …. simple things that make the summer a summer. There are no end to the choice of activities at this time of year: festivals play in swift succession, there are summer theatre performances, temporary art exhibitions and a plethora of events. Hiking The estate has several beautiful nature paths of various lengths and levels. The routes are marked on maps that can be obtained at Café Vivan or from Söderlångvik’s website. Fill your picnic basket at Café Vivan and make a beeline for the lean-to shelter ”Vindskyddet” on the hill approximately 2 km from the farm. The view of the archipelago is stunning.

Jazz and classical concerts are organised in the newly renovated Café Vivan. An exhibition by artist and photographer Niclas Warius entitled ”Vanitas Chimitoensis” is shown in the café. Many cultural or local food events are organised throughout the year such as the popular Apple Days in September. The yoga courses take place outdoors on the lawn or indoors instead of on the manor house balcony. New this year is the half marathon, Broloppet (Dalsbruk–Kasnäs), where the shorter walking stage starts at the estate for the first time. A new bird

watching course is organised in May, apple picking days and wine evenings during the autumn. The manor house art museum is closed for renovation. Söderlångvik manor was cultural patron and businessman Amos Anderson’s summer residence and second home. Andrerson bequeathed the estate and other assets to the association Föreningen Konstsamfundet which he founded. The stylish manor is one of the Kimitoön Islands’ most popular visitor attractions.

27.7.2019 there is a festive atmosphere on Hitis when the Hitis Boat Race is organised. Church boats and other rowing boats compete with each other in different classes. There are fun activities ashore for the whole family.

The plan is to visit Rosala Viking Centre first, then lunch at the smokehouse, before topping the day off with coffee at Backom. The Viking centre and smokehouse are on Rosala and Backom is on Hitis. The distance between Rosala and Hitis is approximately 10km by a beautiful forest road. Rosala Viking Centre Visiting Rosala Viking Centre is like falling into an ancient world. The guide demonstrates a doubleheaded throwing axe. “Raise the axe over your head, bend your knees, take aim and throw!” Bang! The axe blade hits the target. The children jump in excitement, waiting for their turn. The axe is an exact replica of an original Viking artefact – just like everything else at the centre. The Viking centre is constructed like a Viking village, complete with chieftain’s hall, longhouse and more. Many activities take place in the courtyard between the buildings. The most popular activities for the youngest in the family are ”A day as a Viking”, This entails dressing

up as a Viking, baking bread over an open fire, visiting the Viking ship beside the centre and testing various battle techniques. Adult visitors will enjoy the informative exhibition about Viking artefacts that were found in the archaeological excavations in Kyrksundet, the strait where a bridge connect the Rosala and Hitis islands. Modern Vikings will also appreciate the rustic menu. Taproom Smokehouse Taproom Smokehouse is situated on the seafront, a couple of kilometres from the Viking centre, near Rousal Brygghus craft brewery. Just as the name suggests, the smokehouse serves barbecued and smoked dishes. Backom Café The heart of Backom Café is the old stables and surrounding meadow. Grey, well preserved timbers create a timeless archipelago atmosphere. This is the perfect place for a relaxing cup of coffee.

Tractor cavalcade, Kimito summer 2019 is a must for all lovers of agricultural machinery. Thousands of enthusiasts meet by the edge of a field to watch classic tractors and cult classic farming equipment puffing and clanking around. The climax of the event is a long tractor cavalcade.

Iniö Folk 26.–28.8.2019 is an authentic archipelago festival. Performers of world music and small Finnish and Swedish language folk music concerts are offered on three islands with among others Skärgårdstorget, Aftonro, Keistiö school and Erkas on Jurmo as locations.

September Open, Dalsbruk 7.9.2019 Is a delightful mix of Middle Ages and archipelago. Over 100 artisans sell their wares at diverse markets. The medieval market has a real jousting tournament, battle reenactments, live music and much more. The harvest market sells an abundance of local produce. In the labyrinths of baroque, Pargas 3–6.10.2019 has a special place in Finland’s music scene and is the only event of its kind in Southwest Finland. A passion for food and innovation are the spices needed according to Therese Skaag. – This is what puts Houtskär on the map, says Therese. 52

The exact dish is a carefully protected secret at the moment. What we do know is that last year guests were served no less than grilled seal, a controversial choice, but a dish that is intrinsically traditional in the outer archipelago. Two years ago, a dish based on seabirds was served. Matglädje is of course much more than the organisers’ vision and passion. It is the authentic food that attracts artisan food producers and guests to Houtskär. – The stalls at ”Taste Street” sell artisan and locally produced foods. The products are tasty, healthy and ecological says Skaag Aside from food and produce, visitors can get buy local archipelago handicrafts. What else happens? A top chef gives tips and advice as delicious dishes are prepared. Fun activities for kids, a tractor cavalcade and a dance band all create a festive atmosphere typical of a thriving archipelago village. Matglädje is organised at the end of August.

Thanks Margot Margot Wikström works with the project Kosthåll med konsumenten i fokus and has taken the initiative for a closer cooperation between the archipelago’s harvest festivals. They are now organised consecutively so you have the possibility to visit them all!

September opens, of course, with the extremely popular September Open in Dalsbruk. The event is a lively mix of medieval archipelago market, harvest festival and September Expo trade fair. We could also mention real jousting competitions and live music. It is easy to discover gems just for you among the 100 market stalls. The Archipelago Harvest Festival spreads over the whole of the Pargas archipelago with Nagu’s market as its core. Just imagine the smoky scents of the Finnish National Fish Smoking Competition. The next day it is the turn of farms and businesses to open their doors and welcome harvest festival visitors in. Restaurant Days kick off with the Harvest Festival both on the Kimitoön Islands and in the Pargas area,

and continues for a whole week - thank goodness! It would otherwise be difficult to manage to taste all the local delicacies and seasonal produce that the restaurants create in their kitchens. Gamla Malmen’s Autumn Market is a cosy event in Pargas’s old town. You can buy local delicacies - bring the whole family, there are activities for everyone. Apple Days in Söderlångvik, is a highlight of the extensive apple season. During the Apple Days, you can taste delicious products from the orchard, meet apple experts and buy the best of the best. This year Apple Days are also organised in Pargas at various locations like Tammiluoto orchard.

A Biosphere Reserve works for a sustainable society and rich nature which future generations can be proud of. The Archipelago Sea’s Biosphere Reserve works together with local communities, entrepreneurs, researchers, authorities and various organisations to develop sustainable models of living and working in the archipelago. The goals are a positive development in the archipelago and a clean sea. The Biosphere Reserve is an active partner in local communities. Schoolchildren learn about valuable local environments and learn the importance of preserving them. The Biosphere Reserve is one of the main actors in the Korpoström Archipelago Centre alongside Åbo Academy’s Archipelago Institute and the Archipelago Foundation. Cooperation with the Archipelago Foundation has resulted in the Brännskär living archipelago community where two families with young children live.

The island of Brännskär lies in Nagu’s southern archipelago and is a popular harbour for pleasure boats. Visitors have the possibility to buy locally produced food in many parts of the archipelago. The development of artisan foods is a result of cooperation between many organisations in the archipelago biosphere reserve area. The Archipelago Sea Biosphere Reserve supports small-scale tourism where you can enjoy locally produced and authentic experiences in a clean environment.

The park makes it easier to visit and protects the area’s vulnerable nature. The mission of the national park is also to preserve a living archipelago and promote environmental research. You can reach the national park by ferry and passenger boat – on your own or as part of a guided tour. During the summer, the area is popular

with sailors and kayakers. During the winter, longdistance ice skaters enjoy the magnificent scenery. The Archipelago National Park lies east of the Åland Islands, south of Korpo, Nagu, Pargas and the Kimito Island. The national park is on state owned land managed by Parks & Wildlife Finland.

at Archipelago Center Korpoström ˜ An international exhibition about plastic inspires new ways of thinking ˜ This year’s main exhibition in the Archipelago Center Korpoström addresses the most acute current marine problem. The growing mountain of plastic at sea – what can we do to remedy the situation.

The science exhibition Out to Sea? -The Plastic Garbage Project examines the issues by explaining the enormous scale of the plastic problem whilst looking forward to solutions. There is a lot to do in terms of design, consumption and use of resources. The aim is to give visitors an eye-opener in order for them to be able to make a change in their own communities.

The Plastic at Sea exhibition has been shown in over 20 countries. It is shown in Finland in Korpoström 3.5–30.9 2019. Parts of the exhibition will be shown in the main Turku City Library in May. The exhibition is interdisciplinary and is aimed at all ages.

Better fisherman's luck with a valid licence

Hook and line fishing, ice fishing and fishing with a simple baltic herring rig are free in Finland. Angling for under 18s and over 65s is also free (except on the Åland islands). All other recreational fishing is subject to a fee or permit. Fisheries management fees in Finland are 45 euros for 1 year, 15 euros for 7 days and 6 euros for 1 day.

Fisheries management fees can be paid in three ways

1. Pay for your fishing permit at www.eraluvat. fi. Print the receipt or save a copy on your mobile phone. 2. Call the service number +358 20 69 2424 (Mon–Fri 9–16).

3. Pay for your fishing permit at R-kioski or at one of Parks & Wildlife Finland’s Nature Centres. Sustainable tourism means taking responsibility for tourism’s environmental, sociocultural and economic impacts. There are tour operators that only offer sustainable products. We don’t have mass tourism in the archipelago. Despite this, there is always room for environmental improvement. Tourism entrepreneur Ville Laitinen in Dalsbruk works and lives according to sustainability principals. How can we visit the archipelago in a sustainable way? – It is all about choices. You can chose travel that has lower environmental impacts. It is better to avoid long-distance travel. It is also important to compare the services and products that you buy and choose environmentally friendly options. – Only follow marked trails when out in nature. – Eat local, artisan and ecological food. They are healthy and natural, plus buying locally produced products has a positive sociocultural and economic benefit for the local population and creates a knock

VALUES: Is it possible to run a profitable company without negative environmental impact? – No, naturally not, all activity incurs impacts, and economic profitability is relative. In the long-run we can make a difference by making environmentally friendly choices. My company is environmentally responsible. Additionally, we give 5% of our profits to environmental protection. This is an important cause for me; I believe that businesses can create benefits for society and nature protection. Are you part of a sustainable development network? – We are members of the Leave No Trace network. It is an organisation for sustainable tourism. Members are committed to following certain principals.

Next stop is Kökar on the Åland Islands Did you know that”Ålandstafiken’s” Southern Line sails between Galtby in Korpo and Långnäs on Åland? You can take your car, but the best experience is by foot, bike or motorbike. Westward Carfield rental bikes can be returned at the ferry pier in Galtby. After leaving Galtby, the ferry calls at Kökar, Kyrkogårdsö, Husö, Sottunga och Överö before terminating at Långnäs on the main Åland island. Busses connect Långnäs and Mariehamn. Eastward If you arrive from Åland, you can continue your journey without needing a car by taking the local bus Skärgårdsbussen from Galtby. Carfield rents bikes in Verkan Marina or Restaurant Hjalmars, (2km and 3km respectively from the harbour). It

is also possible to reserve bikes to be delivered to the ferry pier. Spend the night on an island The journey between Galtby and Långnäs is even more enjoyable by breaking the trip and staying on one of the idyllic islands on the way. This makes your trip even cheaper, as those spending a night on one of the islands pay less on the ferry. The ferries serving Galtby are Ålandstrafiken to the Åland islands and local car ferries to Houtskär and Norrskata.
