Yesenia De La Torre Editor’s Note: How Homecoming Began As Streamwood High School celebrated their 43rd Homecoming I began to wonder, how and who started this amazing tradition that happens every school year? Friday the 17th, after the amazing and fun Homecoming assembly I had a substitute teacher who turned out to be Mr. Rosner the Varsity Girls Basketball coach and former Student Council Adviser. I had the honor of interviewing him that day. Mr. Rosner was the Student Council Adviser for 25 years. Him and the group of students within the Council started the extravaganza everyone looks forward to every school year. Homecoming Week. (Continued page )

Sophomore: Janet Janet Do you have high hopes for winning? - Yeah! What is the best decoration you have? - Flying monkeys
Junior: Lily & Lariah From senior to freshman who do you think did the best? - Senior, sophomore, junior, freshman How long have you been working on your wall? - A week or two
• Freshman: Beauty & the Beast
●
Senior: Aracely What inspired you to choose the scene you did? - It’s a compromise of all the scenes in Grease. We added the iconic parts of the movie in our hall

The first activity during homecoming week was the Tailgate/Bonfire that happened Monday, September 13th. Students and staff enjoyed tasty snacks provided by the Girls Tennis team who was serving sweet treats and drinks. HOSA served freshly popcorn along with drinks. Both were fundraising for their own sport/club.

The boys were not to be left out. Both the Junior and Senior teams had their Sabre boys come out to cheer for support! Both groups of boys performed at halftime for the crowd. They left technique in the dance, room but both routines were highly entertaining!
“It is our last game, so we are kinda emotional. A lot of emotions are present tonight.”Senior Cynthia Ramirez
September 15th Powder Puff kicked off with the Freshman VS Sophomores at 5:30, the Juniors VS Seniors following at 7pm on Millennium Field. The Sophomores beat the Freshmen 18-7. The Freshmen made a good showing, considering they had zero subs and only 1 day of practice!
This was the first time playing Powder puff football for both the Freshmen and the Sophomores. Sophomore Paola Valdez commented, “I was very anxious, I feel so excited though, because we won! I didn’t think we would win because none of us play flag football like that.”

The Senior game was intense, despite the 25- 0 defeat for the Juniors. The Senior team is undefeated in their 4 years of playing Powder Puff football, so it is nothing to feel bad about. The juniors managed to play hard the entire game, even making some long runs almost to the touchdown zone. Before the game, senior, Sayuri Ishikawa, exclaimed her excitement over Powder Puff being able to happen after coming off this pandemic year: “It feels really good, I’m glad that we actually were able to have a senior year. Hopefully we could beat the Juniors this year, take a W for our senior year!

The Dance was an Insta worthy evening! - Sam Dambra
The Dance Sam Dambra & Alicia Garcia
September 18, 2021 the weather set the mood for a perfect evening. Students were excited to be back on the dance floor, as the Homecoming Dance was cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Senior Haley Perez stated, “I am most excited to enjoy my last homecoming with my friends.” The Homecoming Dance focused on each classes themes with a playbill as you walked in and had photo ops for your stories. From start to finish everyone was dancing with their friends; happy to be back to normal. The dance was a success, and a perfect way to close an amazing Homecoming week.

Old and new Student Council Sponsors Mrs. Fernstrom and Mr. Rosner
During those 25 years have you gained a meaning of Homecoming?
I think Homecoming is special and in the years that we did it we were starting from scratch, we have never done anything like this before. We went to other schools to see how they did it, and we tried to build a tradition here. Which I think we did; we kind of established our type of Homecoming over those years and every year you try to make it better than the year before. Homecoming is special for every high school; you
try to make it the best experience possible for both staff and students. Can you tell me how you feel looking at Homecoming and what it has become now? I think we set a tone for Streamwood High School and to see it get better
Out of all the years you were Student Council Advisor, what was your favorite year? There was a lot we used to do: a 12-hour lock in. In the early days the students would stay overnight. They would be locked in from 6 in the afternoon to 6 in the morning to decorate the whole school. If there was one thing that stands out is that one year we were trying out new paint. It was supposed to be great, and we painted all over the school. Then we realized afterwards that the paint was not the water soluble paint. It wouldn’t come off! The assistant principal at the time called me and my co-sponsor in and said “what did you do?” We had to get the entire student council and everyday for a month we had to scrap the windows and doors to get the paint off.
Mr. Rosner shared with me that during the first few years Student Council had to convince the school to do Powder Puff. The school did not want to approve Powder Puff, because they didn’t want to see girls hurt each other. Now, it is our most attended event. Mr. Rosner has been a part of Streamwood High School Community for a total of 42 years. We are certainly grateful for all the work he has done with coaching Golf, Varsity Girls Basketball, as well as starting the amazing tradition we celebrate every single year that is Homecoming.
and better every year; it’s good to see it. Mrs. Fernstrom, has been doing it for a long time. She was with me in my last year of being a Student Council Advisor. I think she has done a fabulous job with keeping the traditions going and coming up with new ideas. I don’t know what we would do without her planning this, because it is a very difficult job, but I think the students enjoy it and look forward to it.
